Exterior design
Living the yacht life Combining advanced naval architecture from Van Oossanen with exterior design by Omega Architects, Gemini offers a spacious volume of 760 GT. The 55m Steel platform encompasses proven efficiency with sophisticated style, and the renowned FDHF hull form to ensure performance and power. An innovative use of glass throughout provides an abundance of natural light and panoramic vistas. At the heart of the design is the owner’s stateroom, where an 82-square-metre retreat awaits on the main deck. Elsewhere, ten guests are accommodated across five staterooms - all with en-suite facilities. The full beam sky lounge and main saloon are the hub of the yacht where the guests gather. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors lead to outdoor seating, dining and relaxation areas, delivering a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor. A unique dedicated wellness area is accessible via the beach club, while the sun deck incorporates plenty of room for soaking up the best of life on board. Powered by two MTU 8V 4000 M63 engines, the 55m Steel achieves a top speed of 15.5 knots with a range of 4,500 nautical miles at 13 knots.

The full beam sky lounge is found on the wheelhouse deck and leads out to a spacious seating and dining area. The VIP stateroom is also found on this deck, and is a unique feature carried across all three 55m Steel sister ships. On the sun deck above, a luxurious Jacuzzi invites guests to make the most of resting on board, not to mention enjoy sundowners together.
An additional comfortable seating area is located at the bow in front of the wheelhouse, which is perfect for mid-morning coffee and taking in spectacular views whilst cruising. Two tenders are located on the foredeck, along with a fixed crane for easily placing the tenders in water ready for the day’s activities.
Following the integrated staircase down to the main deck, a generous seating area welcomes guests around fixed coffee tables and full-length main saloon. One deck lower is the beach club, complete with sun loungers, wellness area and unparalleled access to the ocean.

Frank Laupman
Exterior design
Next generation design Gemini is a yacht that continues a Heesen success story. Frank Laupman of Dutch design studio Omega Architects created an enduring exterior design that sees Gemini, the third yacht to form part of the Dutch shipyard’s restyled 55-metre class, again take centre stage. A huge volume of 760 GT creates generous usable internal space. A lower deck layout features four enlarged guest cabins that occupy the space of the previous five. Thanks to the wide-body layout a VIP suite sits on the upper deck, too. But it’s in the exterior styling where Laupman’s keen eye comes to the fore. “Like the other yachts in the 55m Steel series, Gemini’s profile is clean and crisp with characteristic floor-to-ceiling windows providing uninterrupted views that flood the interior with natural light,” says Laupman. “The main aft deck area is where guests can mingle and enjoy comfortable seating, while the upper aft deck is for al fresco dining. Further seating with tables forward provide a view over the foredeck and bow.”
14
55m Steel
The exterior is all about celebrating usable deck space for the outdoor experience. For sun worshippers, the vast sun deck offers panoramic views as far as the eye can see. For relaxation lovers, the wellness centre offers rejuvenation at sea. And for watersports enthusiasts, access to the ocean’s edge is provided on the beach club aft.
“The fact that there is an undercut to the underside of the deck helps to achieve another ‘styling feature’ whilst maximising usable deck space for guests.” Gemini’s exterior carries the sporty shape of Heesen’s DNA combined with real purpose for the seasoned yacht owner. The tenders stored on the foredeck with a crane integrated into the navigation mast offer a cost-effective and efficient solution from an operation standpoint without compromising the yacht’s exterior styling. Omega Architects’ clean and uncluttered design affords Gemini an ergonomic flow and is a lesson in optimising outdoor deck areas.
“The overall exterior footprint spread across three levels is deceptively large with ample space dedicated to pure onboard enjoyment,” says Laupman. “Offering space, volume and an optimised experience at sea, Gemini combines design with advanced naval architecture engineering in a marriage of creative and technological flair.”
Maximising volume “Throughout the evolutionary design process that has resulted in Gemini, the overall gross tonnage has never varied by more than 20GT or so. What has changed is that the available volume and general arrangement has been adapted to satisfy the evolving desires and lifestyle of Heesen’s discerning clients.” Signature details As with her sisterships, a notable ‘shark tooth’ design detail in the wheelhouse overhang of the superstructure gives Gemini her highly distinctive appeal. Masculine lines and a bank of vertical windows enhance the long, vertical shape. Scooped glass cut into the bulwarks increase the connection between interior and exterior.

Interior design
Fresh perspective A master suite with imagination The full-beam master suite enjoys a forward position in the yacht, where panoramic views stretch out to sea. Amber mirrored panels elevate the warmth of the natural light that fills the room. Specially partitioned areas created through the use of loose furniture and lighting give the room a sense of purpose. This continues in the master en suite, where frosted internal partitions provide privacy, decoration and design direction. Accents of colour Brushed teak floors sit alongside dark satin gloss oak door frames. Onyx black canyon and quartzite marble balance the darker tones of hammered wood and coffee leather. Backlit fixed furniture and vibrant bursts of colour come together to create a clean and modern yacht interior where light bounces off every surface.

Luca Dini
For experienced yacht designers Luca Dini and Silvia Margutti, creating an interior for Project Gemini posed some interesting new challenges. The yacht is the Italians’ debut collaboration with Dutch shipyard Heesen, and their first boat built on speculation. The new parameters gave the duo fresh challenges and encouraged them to approach the design from a different starting point.
“We set about creating something unique, but that the client can ultimately put their stamp on.”
“Working on a boat built on speculation pushed us to be more creative,” says Dini. “It prompted us to use materials that lean towards being understated, but that have texture. Gemini’s
interior is characterised by a geometric design language that creates “clearly defined areas” that thread throughout the yacht. “We opted for lightly toasted colours – almonds, creams and chocolate – to give the space warmth but keep it neutral. And we made the most of the large windows that provide natural light and flowing spaces.” A balanced collection of wood and leather is used alongside metal and marble. But the standout onboard material is glass. This is best illustrated in the sky lounge, where mirrors are artfully placed to bounce light around the interior and decorative glass features for theatrical effect. “Complemented by a more understated general design that points to both function and texture,” explains Dini. “We were also careful to include a few subtle textures that aren’t immediately obvious, but when viewed up close the quality shines through.” Subtle detail is a calling card of Gemini’s interior. A consistent design language travels from interior to exterior, tying together the entire aesthetic feel. “We used plain and amber mirror to enrich the setting, implement reflections and give the interior some special tones,” says Dini. “It gives the impression of a detailed interior, without being too overbearing, and nicely echoes the contemporary exterior detailing.”

Simple elegance Refined materials have been championed in this paired back and sophisticated interior by Italian designer Luca Dini. A geometric design language threads through the yacht creating clearly defined areas. Full-gloss tay wood, mirrors and decorated glass are matched with marine leather wall panels and fabric-lined ceilings. Accents of metal, marble and glass are used to give the light and airy interior composition and focus. All views lead to the horizon in a celebration of floor-to-ceiling windows and large reflective surfaces.

Relax and unwind
On entering the main saloon and dining area two large bronze mirrored ceiling panels draw the eyes skyward. Reflecting light and space around the room, the effect maximises the already generous layout. A modular sofa by Giorgetti and matching tub armchairs invite guests to relax in comfort. Flanked by windows on both sides, soft illumination facilities a gradual transition from day to night. A stylish lighting feature that mimics the shape of coral artfully suspends over a dining table set for twelve.

A delicious palette of lightly toasted almond and warm chocolate make the versatile sky lounge the place to unwind. The sky lounge is a key area on board Gemini and is blessed with some of the finest panoramic views. A pair of Minotti bronze glass topped coffee tables create space. Silk cream rug underfoot gives warmth to this zen interior. A trio of leather clad Giorgetti bar stools invite guests to take a seat, sip on an aperitif and absorb the far-reaching views.

Shipyard 11
Ever since Frans Heesen started out in 1978, the shipyard has continuously expanded and improved its infrastructure and docks. Today, it is one of the most advanced and well-equipped yacht-building facilities in the world. The shipyard is located in the Dutch city of Oss, 150 kilometres inland and connected to the North Sea by a series of canals and rivers. Its 22,000 square metres of covered area and
42

2,900 square metres of workshop space offer everything you need to construct a product as complex as a Heesen yacht. Production capacity has gradually increased with the addition of new docks. In 2016, following the success of the 65-metre Galactica Star and 70-metre Galactica Super Nova, a 90-metre shed with 85-metre dry dock were completed. These new facilities allow the construction of yachts up to 83 metres entirely in-house.

Hightech craftsmanship Building a yacht is one of the most challenging construction processes to be undertaken. Few processes require as many skills and expertise. What’s more, in this high-tech era of robots and fully automated production, a Heesen yacht is still largely crafted by hand.
44
55m Steel
Heesen‘s modern shipyard in Oss builds yachts of up to 83 metres.
The design comes to life The backbone of each Heesen yacht is expert welding to the highest tolerances. It is always a magical moment when the first contours of the hull appear, and the yacht’s design comes to life. Heesen uses aluminium – which requires highly skilled and experienced welders – and steel to construct. The exterior outfitting stage is the largest unsung challenge of all builds; complex to the core, executed to perfection.
55m Steel
45
A perfect finish Several layers of epoxy primer are applied to the aluminium and steel surfaces of the yacht, giving the hull and superstructure a smooth finish and a perfect basis for the paintwork. It takes a trained eye and skilful hands to apply each layer of coating and paint with exactly the right thickness. It’s arduous work, too, which is why Heesen equips
46
55m Steel
its workers with industrial-grade exoskeletons. These fully mechanical passive suits provide protection against injury and fatigue. They alleviate the weight and physical stress of holding and working with tools in certain positions. And they also look pretty cool.
The marriage The definitive shape of the yacht is determined by another key moment in the building process: the marriage, when the hull and superstructure are joined. It is all about perfect timing and precision when the crane operator lowers the superstructure onto the hull.
55m Steel
47
Hand-built imagination As one of the few yacht builders to have an entire in-house department of interior specialists, Heesen guarantees consistent quality and custom design solutions that spark your imagination.
‘Heesen builds its yacht interiors entirely in-house, a service that differentiates the shipyard from others in the world and enables it to guarantee the quality it promises’
48
55m Steel
Interior workshop The shipyard’s main interior workshop is situated in Winterswijk, just over an hour’s drive from Oss, and provides more than 8,100 square metres of working space. Here, a large group of craftsmen work on up to five Heesen projects at the same time. This is where all of the luxury areas – such as the atrium, saloon, dining room, owner’s stateroom and guest suites – are created. At the shipyard in Oss, another 30 craftsmen work on the interiors of all the service areas and sky lounges. Rather unusually in this industry, Heesen builds its yacht interiors entirely in-house, which requires every type of machinery and skill on location. “This is something that has evolved over the years and we are very proud of it,” Henry Schreur, director of Heesen Interiors, explains, “because we have been responsible for many award-winning yacht interiors.” Schreur refers to the acclaimed My Sky, Galactica Star, Elena, Amore Mio and Galactica Super Nova. This requires a lot of talent. It is one of many reasons why Heesen invests heavily in the acquisition of young talent.
55m Steel
49
Mock-up The interior construction process consists of two phases. At first, the in-house interior department generates a four-square-metre mock-up of the proposed interior. This is a full-sized, fully finished interior fitted with handles, switches, lamps and even fabrics and flooring. If the owner agrees with the concept, the interior department then starts creating workshop drawings and sources all the materials, from the exotic to the everyday.
Exquisite materials Once completed, the interior reaches the second phase – the actual creation process, which starts at both atelier locations. The craftsmen work with some exclusive wood types, including teak, wengÊ, Macassar ebony, walnut, flamed maple, as well as stained and curved glass, ray and goat skin, 3D printed elements, marble, onyx and other minerals. There are no limits to what the in-house interior specialists can create: the challenge lies in processing the materials in the right way.
Perfect finish Naturally, raw materials such as bamboo, wood and leather differ from each other in their colour or texture. So to create uniformity, the interior specialists have to carefully treat each piece of wood by bleaching or staining, or colour the animal skin. As well as the material challenge of ensuring every piece looks exactly like its proposed design, weight, dimensions and time are other constraining factors for the craftsmen involved. However, even with last-minute changes, these professionals never take short cuts and always ensure that they install everything with a perfect finish.

After Sales & Yacht Services With an ever-expanding fleet of superyachts cruising the world, it was only natural to broaden the scope of services and launch a comprehensive programme called ‘Yacht Services by Heesen’ alongside the shipyard’s existing After Sales programme. The in-house programme consists of three pillars to enhance owners’ overall experience and improve the operational reliability of their assets. Taking delivery of a Heesen yacht is the start of a journey – a carefree journey, thanks to the support of Heesen’s After
Sales programme, which ensures premium care and provides maintenance and technical support throughout the yacht’s entire lifespan. From the moment that our skilled team of workers finish building the yacht, she is placed in the expert caring hands of our After Sales team who keep watch over the yacht, ensuring she stays in peak condition. In addition, Heesen proactively reaches out to all owners with the yacht services detailed on the following pages.

Refit This pillar was introduced to ensure that Heesen’s Dutch quality standards can be maintained throughout the lifecycle of a yacht. Owners sometimes have to fall back on local shipyards and subcontractors when maintenance and repair work is required. This is why Heesen provides managerial assistance on necessary refit, repair and renewal work, either from a distance or on location. A flying squad of technicians is ready to travel at a moment’s notice to any location in the world.
