Heimfocus Magazin – Stimme für Flüchtlinge teilhaben-Teil werden in diesem land zu leben. die meisten Bürger der Stadt wissen jedoch nicht einmal von der Existenz dieser Unterkunft, geschweige denn von den Menschen dort mit ihren Schicksalen. dies ist ein Grund mehr, aus der isolation und Sprachlosigkeit addis heraus Wege der kommunikation Mulugeta und beidseitiger information zu sudas neue Heimfocus-Magazin wid- chen und anzubieten. met sich hauptsächlich den anliegen von flüchtlingen und Migranten. Um das Magazin wie geplant alle zwei Monate herauszugeben, brauchen wir die Mitarbeit vieler Menschen, die sowohl mit ihren artikeln, informationen und ideen beitragen als auch mit finanzieller Unterstützung. Grundsätzlich wird das HeimfocusMagazin kostenlos verbreitet; da die flüchtlinge jedoch über keine anderen finanziellen Mittel verfügen als 40€ taschengeld im Monat, ist die zukunft dieser vision abhängig von Spenden und Solidaritätsbeiträgen vieler Unterstützer. Eine entsolidarisierte Gesellschaft der sozialen Kälte, des Egoismus und ja, auch der Fremdenfeindlichkeit: dieses Klischee wird immer wieder bedient und nistet sich in unseren Köpfen ein. Wenn es die Realität widerspiegelt, dann muss uns um unserer aller Zukunft willen die Frage herumtreiben, wieso und mit welchem Eigenanteil wir diese Entwicklung zugelassen haben und wie wir unser Denken und Handeln neu ausrichten können. Wenn das Bild unzutreffend ist – und neue Studien über das große ehrenamtliche Engagement in Deutschland belegen dies - dann sollten wir uns darüber freuen und nachdenken, in welcher Absicht uns stetig Angst machende Entwicklungen suggeriert werden. „Sei DU die Veränderung, die du in der Welt wünschst“, ist eines der mahnenden Worte von Mahatma Gandhi.

Mit vollem Einsatz und viel, viel Geduld ermöglichten uns Geschäftsleitung und unsere liebenswerte Layouterin eine Erstausgabe des Magazins, auf die wir alle mit Recht stolz sind. Ohne flyeralarm kein Heimfocus, auf diese Formel kann man die Dimension des Beitrages bringen. Erschöpft und frustriert Nach langen Jahren zermürbender Ungewissheit endlich eine Aufentlhaltserlaubnis zu bekommen – eine Sternstunde für jeden Flüchtling. Doch nun beginnt das Ringen um eine eigenständige Existenz mit ganzer Härte, wie ein Flüchtling aus dem Irak berichtet. Nach langen Jahren des erzwungenen beruflichen Stillstandes hat er so gut wie keine Chance auf dem Arbeitsmarkt, somit auch nicht für das ersehnte selbstbestimmte Leben in Deutschland. Ein anderer Flüchtling fügt verzweifelt an: “Es wäre wohl besser, als Gefangener nach Europa zu kommen als ein Flüchtling.” Denn im Gefängnis habe man mehr Rechte auf Basisversorgung und auf menschliche Behandlung als ein Asylsuchender. Dazu käme eine Mauer aus diskriminierenden Vorurteilen in den Köpfen vieler Einheimischer, die Flüchtlinge mitunter pauschal als Kriminelle, Mörder, Drogenhändler oder gar als Abschaum ansähen. Die Flüchtlinge wüssten auch allzu gut, dass ihnen oft die Motivation unterstellt wird, sie wollten nur von den sozialen Systemen dieses Landes profitieren. Dabei sei es für die meisten schlicht eine Frage von Leben und Tod, die Heimat, die Familie und Freunde zu verlassen. Sie sehnten sich nach Frieden, Sicherheit und Lebensperspektive. Und fänden hier abweisende und endlose bürokratische Hürden vor, statt als Menschen in Not mit all ihren Bedürfnissen wahrgenommen zu werden. Einzige Lichtblicke seien Verbände und Freiwillige, die den Flüchtlingen Gastfreundschaft und Hilfsbereitschaft entgegenbrächten. Das Schicksal vieler hängt von der ersten Anhörung der Behörden in Zirndorf ab, einer der Erstaufnahmeeinrichtungen. Bereits hier entscheiden viele – auch zufällige – Faktoren über die Zukunft des Flüchtlings: die Person des amtlichen Interviewers und seine Grundeinstellung zu Flüchtlingen, die Professionalität und Herkunft des Übersetzers und letzlich auch die Frage, ob der Flüchtling in dieser extremen Ausnahmesituation mit all seinen Traumata, Ängsten und Unsicherhei-

ten überhaupt in der Lage ist, alle Fakten richtig und vollständig zu verbalisieren. Nach langen Jahren in Lagern verlieren Flüchtlinge ihren Lebensmut, ihre Visionen einer guten Zukunft, ihre Hoffnungen auf Grundrechte in unserem Land. Sie verzweifeln an ihrer Ohnmacht und mangelnder Lebensperspektive. Dabei haben fast alle von ihnen das Potenzial, den Willen und Wunsch, in Freiheit ihr Leben selbst in die Hand zu nehmen und so auch zur sozioökonomischen Entwicklung der neuen Heimat beizutragen. Future Steps

Projekt zur Qualifikation von Flüchtlingen

Die mitgebrachten Fähigkeiten der Flüchtlinge weiter zu entwickeln und ihnen neue zu vermitteln ist das Ziel dieses erfolgreichen Projektes unter der Regie von Caritas in Unterfranken. In zeitlich begrenzten Workshops werden in den großen Gemeinschaftsunterkünften in Würzburg und Aschaffenburg den Bewohnern Kurse z.B. in Computerkenntnissen, Schreinerei oder Fahrradreparatur angeboten, aber auch in Bau von Solarkochern als Startup-Option nach einer evtl. Rückkehr in die Heimat oder Basiskurse in Hygiene. In Aschaffenburg bietet Future Steps auch Deutschkurse an. Weitere Workshops, stets von qualifizierten Lehrern durchgeführt, sind geplant. Individuelle Beratung von Flüchtlingen, die sich für ein einen Sprachkurs oder ein Studium interessieren, ergänzt das Angebot sowie ganz praktische Kommunikationshilfen wie Internetzugang und Möglichkeit zum Kopieren und Faxen. Nicht nur der Erwerb neuer Kenntnisse, auch das Erlernen deutscher Fachbegriffe, Stärkung der Gemeinschaft unter den Flüchtlingen und Förderung ihrer individuellen Fähigkeiten sind die großen Verdienste dieses Projektes. Vielmehr holt es die Menschen aus ihrer Isolation heraus, aus der erzwungenen Inaktivität und Passivität und ist somit ein Lichtblick in ihrem belastenden Alltag. So entsteht auch Vertrauen, so die langjährige Leiterin des Projektes, Nicole Gössl, das eine Begleitung des Einzelnen ermöglicht und ihr aber auch oftmals erschütternde und belastende Einblicke in die Schicksale der Menschen bietet. Future steps is a project which established by different institutions for supporting refugees who live in Lower Franconia. The project has started since 2009. It is sponsored by European refugees fund, through the free state of Bavaria and Caritas of diocese Würzburg running in the Bavaria region of lower Franconia mainly in the cities of Würzburg and Aschaffenburg. Isabel Schätzlein and Nicole Gössl are the two committed social workers of the project. Their counselling days in the GU of Würzburg are Tuesday and Friday morning. The other days they offer appointments in their office in town . Nicole Gössl told to Heimfocus that the main goal of Future Steps is qualifying refugees by providing short term training, courses and workshops. This is one way to improve their skills and to pave the way for the betterment of their future life. For the refugees it is nice having these courses to engage their minds rather than sitting and sleeping in their room, doing nothing … Nicole added that Future Steps is providing computer and internet courses for beginners and also advanced level. Additionally woodwork training, bicycle repairing, solar energy training and tuition in sanitation and hygiene are offered. For these particular courses, Future Steps chooses qualified trainers who have the interest and willingness to support refugees. All the trainers who have participated in the project have really liked it and appreciated this unique experience of working with refugees. Also counselling for refugees who are interested in studying, either in the university or in language courses, is offered. Future Steps also offers individual support for instance copying, printing, and free use of the internet every Tuesday morning. In addition, this project is also important to encourage refugees, to help them get out of depression and to create a good ambience with learning together and a harmonious atmosphere. Wieso? Why? Gedanken nach einem Besuch in der GU Würzburg Deutschland fördert die Ausbildung von Hunderten von Ausländern und vernachlässigt Tausende. Wieso? Ich habe mir schon Gedanken darüber gemacht und habe ein paar politische Antworten dafür gefunden, aber noch keine, die für mich moralisch akzeptabel ist. Wir halten uns für gute Menschen; sind wir auch. Darum können wir uns kaum vorstellen, dass so viele Menschen unter solchen Bedingungen leben. Menschen aus den verschiedensten Ecken der Welt, Menschen mit verschiedenen Kulturen, Sprachen, Hautfarben. Aber sie haben alle etwas gemeinsam: ein Herz, das pumpt; Gefühle, eine Seele, wie wir sie alle haben. Aber ihnen fehlt etwas. Ihnen fehlt das Wichtigste: der Pass. Anscheinend steckt die Identität in einem Stück Papier, denn ohne Pass wird man nicht als Mensch behandelt, sondern als Teil einer unerwünschten Herde von Leuten, dessen Menschenrechte kaum erfüllt werden. Der Eintritt im Lager war schockierend. Man hatte den Eindruck, man wäre in ein anderes Land gekommen. Ein Land der Dritten Welt, das man nur aus dem Fernsehen kennt und nie besichtigen würde. Meine Eindrücke nach der Begegnung kann ich kaum beschreiben: Angst, Mitleid, Frust, Ärger... Ein Mischmasch von Gefühlen, die ich immer noch nicht ganz verstehe. Die Frage bleibt für mich immer noch offen: Wieso? Wieso werden Personen so gelagert, als wären sie alte, unbrauchbare Möbel? Wieso tut man so etwas unseren Mitmenschen an ? Reflections after a visit to the GU Würzburg Germany supports the training of hundreds of foreigners and neglects thousands. Why? I have already thought about and found a few political answers for this, but none which I find morally acceptable. We take ourselves for good human beings, which we are. That is why we can hardly imagine that so many people live under such conditions. People from all the different parts of the world, people with different cultures, languages, colours of the skin. Yet they all have something in common: a heart which beats, a soul as we all have. However, they are missing something. They are missing the most important thing: the passport. Obviously identity lies within one piece of paper, because without a passport one is not treated as a human being, but as part of an undesired herd of people, whose human rights are hardly fulfilled. The acces to the camp was shocking. One had the impression to have arrived in a different country. A country of the Third World, which one only knows through television and which one would never visit. I can hardly describe my impressions after the encounter: fear, pity, frustration, anger… A mixture of feelings, which I still do not understand completely. The question still remains without an answer for me: why? Why are people stocked as if they were old, useless furniture? Why are we doing this to our fellow human beings? Mein neuer Freund in der GU kommt aus dem Irak Es gibt auch Lichtblicke im harten und mitunter tristen Alltag der Flüchtlinge in der GU (Gemeinschaftsunterkunft). Hier berichtet einer von ihnen von der Freundschaft zwischen ihm als Afrikaner und dem jungen Nachbarn Kehri aus dem Irak. Aus den ersten Kontakten in der Gemeinschaftküche entstehen nach und nach Zuneigung und Vertrauen. Die eigene Geschichte mitzuteilen, Einblicke

in die fremde Kultur zu gewähren und zu erlangen und schließlich auch Ansporn zum Erlernen der deutschen Sprache zur besserenVerständigung zu erfahren, vieles wächst in der direkten Begegnung der beiden jungen Männer. Vieles, was ihnen kostbar und (überlebens-) wichtig wird, was Grenzen und vorgefasste Bilder belanglos werden lässt.

My Iraqi friend in the GU Kehrie is 21 and he lives in the Gemeinschaftsunterkunft (GU) in Würzburg, Germany. He is among the worldwide displaced Iraqis who have escaped their home country looking for peace and security. Following the existence of the US and its allies, the political situation of Iraq is getting worse and worse. According to Kehrie told me that because of his belief, he was neglected by the government and by the majority Muslim society. That is one major reason why Kehrie escaped his country a year ago seeking peace and security. I remember the first day when I met him; he was humble and shy. When we become close each other, I discovered that he is also respectful, hospitable and cooperative. The more I get in touch with him the more I understand Kehrie. He is even beyond that. Moreover, he is an excellent cook. There was a day that I was cooking in the kitchen and Kehrie was preparing his dinner too. At this time, he asked me for permission to give me a brief lesson about on how to cook food and make it delicious. He was too fast and very organized to teach me. Then he cooked a delicious fried meet with a nice dessert for my supper.

He told me that he likes cooking as a hobby too. And when one goes to the kitchen, he is often there cooking even for his friends too.

Eine Begegnung von DAAD-Stipendiaten mit Flüchtlingen in der GU Würzburg

Als ehemalige Stipendiatin des Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes (DAAD) bin ich Mitglied des DAADFreundeskreises. In dieser Funktion kümmere ich mich um ausländische Studierende, die ein Stipendium für ein Studium an der Universität Würzburg erhalten haben. Zusammen mit zwei weiteren Alumni organisiere ich Ausflüge, Führungen, Konzertbesuche etc. und mache sie mit dem sozialen Leben in Deutschland vertraut. Daher kam die Idee eines Treffens mit Asylbewerben, ein Teil der Gesellschaft, der sonst eher im Verborgenen bleibt. Als ich die Zentralstelle des DAAD-Freundeskreises in Bonn über dieses Vorhaben informierte, wurde es zwar für gut befunden. Allerdings gab es Zweifel darüber, ob es wirklich eine gute Idee sei, die privilegierten Gäste der Bundesrepublik Deutschland mit den „unverwünschten“ zusammen zu bringen. Im Juni wurde eine Gruppe von Teilnehmern aus Österreich, Deutschland, Mexiko, Russland und Spanien von Flüchtlingen in der GU empfangen. Jedoch war bereits die Ankunft in der GU für jeden ein Schock, als die Studenten das Lager zuerst von außen sahen, umgeben von Stacheldraht. Außerdem befremdete sie es, dass jeder seinen Reisepass am Eingang abgeben musste, bevor es gestattet war, das Lager durch eine Art Käfig zu betreten – mit einem Passierschein, versteht sich. Der Abend wurde zu einer beindruckenden Begegnung für beide Seiten. Es wurde uns erläutert, was es bedeutet, Asylbewerber in der EU und insbesondere in Bayern zu sein. Man zeigte uns wie sie in Würzburg leben, Essen und das Lebensnotwendige wie medizinische Versorgung erhalten. Unsere Gastgeber zeigten uns Einrichtungen wie eine Küche und Toiletten. So erhielten wir einen Einblick in die Umstände, unter denen 360 Leute aus 35 Ländern ohne Privatsphäre und ohne Kontakt zu der Würzburger Bevölkerung zusammen leben. Es waren zwei Stunden in lebhaften und angeregten Gesprächen vergangen, als man uns sagte, dass es bereits 22 Uhr sei und wir das Lager verlassen mussten. Wir haben uns jedoch vor dem Tor noch weiter unterhalten. Auf dem Weg zurück zum Stadtzentrum sagten mir die Studenten, wie beeindruckt sie von der Begegnung seien und dass es ihrer Meinung nach die bisher beste Veranstaltung des DAAD-Freundeskreises gewesen sei. Sie bevorzugten diesen Abend sogar einem wunderschönen Ausflug nach Bamberg bei herrlichem Wetter! Ich denke, dass dieses Treffen einer der prägendsten Eindrücke ist, welcher die DAAD-Stipendiaten nach Hause nehmen, wenn ihr Studium in Deutschland beendet ist, und daher bedanke ich mich ganz herzlich bei unseren Freunden, die das ermöglicht haben - in Hoffnung auf weitere solcher Veranstaltungen. An encounter of DAAD-scholarship holders with refugees at the GU Würzburg

As a former scholarship holder of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), I am member of an association called „Friends of the DAAD“. As such I am in charge of taking care of international students who have been granted a scholarship to study in Würzburg. Together with two other alumni, I organize excursions, guided tours, take them to concerts etc. and introduce them to social life in Germany. Therefore I had the idea of making them meet asylum seekers, who belong to the hidden part of German society. When I informed the office of the „Friends of the DAAD“ in Bonn about this plan, it was approved, yet there were doubts about whether it was really a good idea to bring the privileged guests of the German Federal Republic together with the unwanted ones. In June a group of people from Austria, Germany, Mexico, Russia and Spain were received at the GU by refugees, who gave us a warm welcome. However, the arrival at the GU had been a shock for everybody, when the students first saw the camp from the outside, surrounded by barbed wire and when we had to leave our passports at the gate before entering the site through a metal construction seeming like a cage.

The evening turned out to be an impressive encounter for both sides during which we were told about what it means to be an asylum seeker in the EU and in particular in Bavaria. We were shown the way they live in Würzburg, how they get food and how their basic needs are covered, such as medical treatment. Our hosts showed us facilities such as a kitchen and toilets. Thus we were given an insight into the circumstances of 360 people from 35 countries living closely together without privacy and without much contact to the citizens of Würzburg. We had spent two hours with lively and inspiring conversation when we were told that it was already 10 p.m. and that we had to leave the camp. However, we continued to talk outside the gate. On our way back to the city centre, I was told by the students about how impressed they were by the encounter and that in their opinion, it was the best event which had been organized by the „Friends of the DAAD“. They had even prefered that evening to a wonderful excursion to Bamberg with splendid weather! I suppose that encounter will be one of the strongest impressions the DAAD-scholars will take home once they finish their studies in Germany and therefore I greatly thank our friends in the GU for making it possible - hoping that more such events are to follow. Erste Station für Flüchtlinge in Bayern Die Erstaufnahmeeinrichtung in dieser Kleinstadt nahe Nürnberg ist in der Regel die erste Anlaufstelle für Asylbewerber aus vielen Ländern. Die meisten von ihnen verbleiben dort für mindestens drei Monate. Manche finden alleine dorthin, andere werden irgendwo von der Polizei aufgegriffen und nach Zirndorf gebracht. In jedem Fall führt diese Zeit der Ungewissheit, Angst und Anspannung den Flüchtling, beson-

ders den allein reisenden, an seine psychischen und körperlichen Grenzen. Insbesondere der Flüchtling, der ohne gültige Papiere unterwegs ist oder beim Versuch, illegal einzureisen, von der Polizei aufgegriffen wird, befindet sich in einer extrem belastenden psychischen Grenzsituation. Er ist oft gar nicht in der Lage, bei den intensiven und langwierigen polizeilichen Befragungen alle De-

tails überlegt, korrekt und detalliert wiederzugeben, die für das spätere Asylverfahren entscheidend sein können. Wie kann dies auch von ihm erwartet werden, unerfahren, unvorbereitet für solche Verhöre, verängstigt und überfordert wie er ist? Und doch kann hier seine Aussage bestimmend sein für sein weiteres Schicksal.

ZIRNDORF: Refugees’ first arriving town in Bayern Zirndorf is a small city in the middle of Franconia near to the historical city of Nürnberg. It is a place where quite a number of asylum seekers from many countries like Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan , Nigeria , Vietnam , Cuba, Russia, Ukraine , Kazakhstan and others arrive at first. Most people stay in this particular place for at least three months. A refugee or an asylum seeker can reach this area through different ways, like coming directly to the camp or he/ she can be accompanied by the police. According to my experience for those who come to Zirndorf directly things often are more complicated than for those being accompanied by the police. This is because those who caught by the police might be staying some days in the police station, or the police might bring them to court. To those who come to this refugee camp individually people around the street fortunately often explain the

direction to the place. Unfortunately the language barrier is a problem. The refugees are mostly those who do not understand a single word of German language and even English too. So there is very often misunderstanding in communication between the refugees and the one who is helping them. The first few days in Germany before reaching Zirndorf are full of anxiety, stress, frustration and trauma for all refugees. This is the moment when everyone starts to struggle for the physiological and mental strength to face being a refugee and to get through the process of asylum application. Refugees are also being caught in the border areas of Germany when they are trying to cross the border illegally. It is also a very hard moment of continual police interview and investigation. In this case, the police will ask where the refugee came from, why he/she came to Germany also the reason for crossing the boarder il-

legally. They also will force them to bring any document to prove their identity as a refugee etc. This situation is too stressful for keeping concentrated on the proper and correct selection of details later reported in your file and being the basic evidence for your application for asylum. Frequently this situation is critical for the official asylum case. Unprepared respond given by a refugee for the reason of being suddenly caught, intimidated and frustrated, facing an unknown experience may be threatening positive progress of the following procedure of the asylum seeker's case. Gemeinsames Wort der Kirchen zur Interkulturellen Woche 2010

ZUSAMMENHALTEN - ZUKUNFT GEWINNEN "Die Frage nach der Zukunft bewegt jeden Menschen, nicht nur in Zeiten politischer und wirtschaftlicher Unsicherheit: Wie wird sich unser Leben weiter entfalten? Welche Möglichkeiten haben wir, unsere Zukunft aktiv zu gestalten? Und darüber hinaus: Wird es gelingen, eine gerechte und menschenwürdige Zukunft für alle Menschen zu schaffen? Zusammenhalten - Zukunft gewinnen ist das Motto der diesjährigen interkulturellen Woche. Dieses Thema korrespondiert mit dem von der Europäischen Union für 2010 ausgerufenen »Europäischen Jahr zur Bekämpfung von Armut und sozialer Ausgrenzung« wie auch mit dem »Jahr der Europäischen Kirchen für Migration«, zu dem die Konferenz Europäischer Kirchen einlädt. Alle drei Initiativen stellen den Gedanken der unveräußerlichen Menschenwürde in den Mittelpunkt und betonen, dass sie besonders im Einsatz für Migranten und Flüchtlinge konkret wird. Als Christen wissen wir: Wer am biblischen Zeugnis von Jesus Christus Maß nimmt, kommt nicht umhin, sich gerade den Ausgegrenzten und Abgeschobenen zuzuwenden. Hungrige, Durstige, Fremde, Nackte und Kranke werden im Gleichnis vom Weltgericht (Mt 25,31-46) unmittelbar mit Christus identifiziert. Für Flüchtlinge und Migranten einzutreten und ihnen Chancen gesellschaftlicher Teilhabe zu eröffnen, ist deshalb auch ein biblisch begründeter Auftrag. Einige aktuelle Handlungsfelder für Politik, Gesellschaft und Kirchen wollen wir exemplarisch benennen: • Die europäischen Staaten als Teil der Menschheitsfamilie müssen ihrer Verantwortung für den weltweiten Flüchtlingsschutz gerecht werden. Menschen, die vor Verfolgung, Krieg und Gewalt fliehen oder von schlimmsten Lebensverhältnissen zur Auswanderung getrieben werden, dürfen an den Mauern der »Festung Eu-

ropa« nicht in ihren Menschenrechten gefährdet werden. Vor allem das verbriefte Recht von Flüchtlingen auf Schutz vor Zurückweisung darf sich nicht als leeres Versprechen erweisen. Wir sind davon überzeugt, dass Europa Flüchtlingen und Migranten nur dann wirklich solidarisch und verantwortlich begegnen kann, wenn sich alle Länder der EU bei der Bewältigung der Herausforderungen gegenseitig unterstützen. Die Staaten an den südlichen und östlichen Grenzen dürfen mit der Flüchtlingsaufnahme nicht allein gelassen werden. •

Auch innerhalb der deutschen Gesellschaft gibt es noch viel zu tun: Migrantinnen und Migranten treffen auf Ausgrenzung, Diskriminierung und Abwehr. Zugang zum Arbeitsmarkt, gleiche Bildungschancen oder gesellschaftliche und politische Partizipationsmöglichkeiten dürfen nicht nur gefordert werden. Vielmehr müssen wir unsere Anstrengungen verstärken, damit diese Ziele für alle, unabhängig von ihrer Herkunft, erreichbar werden. Die Bundesregierung hat angekündigt, das Asylbewerberleistungsgesetz zu überprüfen. Diesen Schritt befürworten wir. Menschen, die sich nicht nur vorübergehend während eines kurzen Asylverfahrens in Deutschland aufhalten, dürfen nicht über Jahre hinweg von sozialer Teilhabe ausgeschlossen und auf die bloße Existenzsicherung verwiesen werden. Es ist im Interesse der deutschen Gesellschaft, ihnen die Integration nicht unnötig zu erschweren. Besonderes Augenmerk richten wir schließlich auch in diesem Jahr auf die Migranten, die ohne Aufenthaltsrecht und Duldung

VIVOVOLO reach out your hand for refugees Most people say that human life is precious, and it is worth being saved by any cost to society. However, there are quite a number of people who sacrify their life for something that they believe in. There are hundreds of thousands of people, traumatized by war, sexual abuse and suffering by the political system of their country. As a result, these people leave their homes in order to save their lives and so they become refugees. In this case, Gemeinschaftsunterkunft (GU) Würzbürg, is one of the refugee camps in Germany. Those people who understood the real value of human life come together to treat and support them. VIVOVOLO is an organization established by a group of volunteers to support refugees. Heimfocus`s Addis Mulugeta sat down with Dörte Volk, one of the organizers of VIVOVOLO.

Heimfocus: What do you want to tell us first? Dörte Volk: It is better to introduce myself and what I am doing in the Gemeinschaftsunterkunft(GU) refugee camp in Würzburg. UGANDA Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa, situated north and northwest of Lake Victoria. It has a total area of 236.040 sq km, two thirds of the total area of Germany. Uganda is bounded in the north by Sudan, in the east by Kenya, in the south by Tanzania and Rwanda, and in the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DROC). It has a total boundary length of 2.698 km. with the population of around 32,4 million people.

The political situation of Uganda

Ugandan politics has been in democratic transition since the colonial handover on November 9th 1962. a lot of the process has had more of a negative impact.

Uganda’s temperature ranges between 16-20°C at night and 26- 30°C during the day with the hottest months being December, January and February. Unlike some parts in the northern Uganda that get typical annual rainfall as low as 100mm, the rest of the country is green all the year with a yearly rainfall up to 2.000mm with the coolest season being March to May and mid-September to November.

Hund oder Mensch?

Was ist der Wert eines Menschen? Manche Menschen glauben immer noch, ihre Rasse sei allen anderen überlegen und habe eine Monopolstellung auf diesem Planeten. Das gibt ihnen jedoch nicht das Recht, die natürlichen Menschenrechte anderer zu verletzen. Zirndorf in Mittelfranken ist eines der Erstaufnahmelager, aus dem Flüchtlinge dann in weitere Unterkünfte verteilt werden. Dort hat ein für die Flüchtlinge verantwortlicher amtlicher Mitarbeiter wörtlich zu mir gesagt: “Ich habe weder Zeit und Energie, mich jetzt mit Ihren Fragen zu beschäftigen, weil ich meine Kraft für das Spielen mit meinem Hund schonen will.” Menschenrechte? Unantastbare Würde des Menschen? Tausende Menschen fliehen aus ihren Heimatländern, um ihr Leben zu retten. Sie erwarten vom zivilisierten Europa, von Deutschland, Sicherheit, Solidarität und humanitäre Gastfreundschaft. Und sie erleben sich allzu oft als hilflos ausgeliefert einer willkürlichen, ja feindseligen Behandlung in Amtsstuben. Für die persönliche und institutionelle Willkür und Verletzungen von Grundrechten der asylsuchenden Menschen gibt es genug Beispiele. “Wir gebe euch Wasser, Essen, ein Dach über dem Kopf und Taschengeld, das ist alles, was ihr braucht und bekommt,” lautet die offizielle Grundeinstellung. Bis auf das Taschengeld könnte dies auch für Haltung von Tieren gelten. Doch Menschen haben andere vitale Grundbedürfnisse wie Respektierung ihrer Menschenwürde, Behandlung ihrer körperlichen und psychischen Traumata und die Perspektive eines selbstbestimmten Lebens. Es trifft zu, dass es Menschen verschiedener Rassen, Hautfarben, Kulturen und Gesellschaften gibt. Wie sollten das Wertvolle in dieser Mannigfaltikeit erkennen und schätzen. In Wahrheit jedoch wird global ein politisches und soziales Klima verbreitet, das Verschiedenartigkeit negativ besetzt, Uneinigkeit und Zerstörung befördert, statt auf die positive und konstruktive Kraft von Verständigung und Einigkeit zum Überleben der Menschheit zu setzen. Dieses negativen Kräfte entfernen uns alle immer mehr von den lebenswichtigen Wurzeln unserer Existenz und bedrohen das natürliche Gleichgewicht auf der Welt, deren Teil wir sind.

There are some individuals and people all over the world who are still thinking and considering their race is the best human creator on this planet. Some of them are playing a game over the other and monopolizing almost everything in the globe and don’t care about the rest. Okay, do what you want, but the question is, don’t violate our natural rights as a human being. Zirndorf is the place where most of the refugees arrive in first before being transferred to other parts of Germany. In this case, I remember that an official person who is in charge of refugees said to me, “I don’t have the time and energy to talk to you and to respond your immediate question right now because I want to save my energy and time to play with my dog”. Imagine if you were in the place when he was talking like that or if you were in my position what would you do? I leave the answer for my readers. For me it is completely against human dignity and natural rights. Do you want to know what I did at that time, okay, I just returned back to my crowded room in which six refugees were living together. I did not cry, I rather imagined myself being as his dog for a while for the sake of having answer for my human rights questions. The truth is many thousands of refugees flee to Europe to save their lives from death and fear. Most of them come from politically insecure and instable areas of Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, and Africa and so on. Refugees expect to come to the different countries of

What is the value of a human being?

Europe in the hope of finding a sense of community, safety and humanitarian conditions according to the proclaimed constitutional Human rights of any “civilized” European country. However, in some refugee camps of Germany, refugees face difficult living conditions and have specific and urgent needs that require greater understanding and support. One of the difficulties is, many of them are harassed by officials of the Foreign Office (Ausländerbehörde). Some officials argue, “We provide water, food, shelter and pocket money, that's all you need so what else do you expect from us!”. That is not the question of simply providing food and water and neglecting the refugees` vital needs of human dignity, appropriate treatment of their traumatized souls and the perspective of an independent life. My worry is that the local people and most of the organizations as well as local Medias don’t have the slightest idea about things like this going on in a democratic, safe and Christian country like this. On the other hand, the harassment of refugees is continuing in a place where I was transferred in by those officials in the Ausländerbehörde. At this time quite a number of refugees are sharing the severing by these individuals. These people do not have a welcoming attitude to refugees like me. They simply greet us with an unhappy face. They show off their power as superior to refugees. Yet we are human beings like them! They are officials in charge of refugees; we do not have the power to defend our human rights and this leaves us helpless against being harassed much alike the bad government Authorities are doing back to our countries.

For instance, in some refugee camps they are cutting refugees' monthly 40 € into pieces and leave them desperate and helpless. The truth is when a family member of refugees has got into trouble with the Ausländerbehörde or police they will possibly cut the whole family’s monthly pocket money including children. What kind of Justice is this? You can imagine the situation after the whole family left empty. Some refugees report that their clothes-voucher amount of money (Kleidergutschein) is also being cut into pieces. According to some refugees explaining to Heimfocus their voucher given to them to buy cloths and shoes every six months is for some reasons divided into monthly having 26 Euro. Imagine what kind of cloths and shoes they are supposed to buy with this ridiculous amount of money. It is true that there is a difference between the creation of human kind in color, race and ways of exercising their norms and cultures. We should proud of this unique variety of differences. The truth is that the political and social climate that prevails in the world today emphasizes difference, disunity, and destruction rather than the qualities of unity and productive and constructive energy that are required to sustain human societies. These negative processes and forces have perpetuated our alienation from the basic material and spiritual roots of our existence, threatening the balance of the natural world which we are a part of By Abasi Kibwana.

Die Karawane für die Rechte der Flüchtlinge und MigrantInnen ist ein Netzwerk, das sich aus Einzelpersonen, Gruppen und Organisationen von Flüchtlingen, MigrantInnen und Deutschen zusammensetzt. Die Grundlage bilden Antiimperialismus und Antirassismus. Wir sind engagiert im Kampf für soziale und politische Rechte, Gleichheit und Respekt für die fundamentalen Menschenrechte eines/r jeden/r.

The Caravan for the rights of refugees and migrants is a network of individuals, groups and organizations of refugees, migrants and Germans based on anti-imperialism and antiracism. We are engaged in the struggle for sociopolitical justice, equality and respect for the fundamental human rights of everyone.

We struggle against and in the process do away with any form of racism, nationalism, sexism and homophobia. The Caravan is a secular and non-party network.
