Dear readers of Solships Det er ufattelig hvor fort ting endrer seg. For et år siden var vi fortsatt opptatt av videreutvikling og vekst. Nå er vi opptatt av hvordan vi skal komme oss gjennom nedturen hele oljeindustrien er midt oppi, på best mulig måte. Vi er for alvor blitt påminnet om at vi er i en syklisk bransje. Når kundene våre reduserer sin aktivitet i den størrelsesorden de nå gjør, så medfører det en kraftig reduksjon i etterspørselen etter tjenestene vi leverer. Som en konsekvens har vi lagt 12 båter i opplag og redusert antall ansatte med over 300. Det er dramatisk. Ikke minst for dem som blir direkte rammet og jeg beklager veldig at vi er nødt for å ta disse grepene. Jeg er ikke i tvil om at markedet kommer tilbake. Når, er det store spørsmålet. Jeg er redd for at det er en nedtur som kommer til å vare en

stund og dermed blir det smertefullt for leverandørindustrien. Hvordan aktørbildet ser ut om 12-18 måneder, er ikke godt å si. Det jeg kan si, er at vår målsetning er klar: vi skal klare oss. Ikke bare det, vi skal komme ut på andre siden som et enda bedre selskap. Det betyr at vi alle må ha en veldig fokus på å ‘levere varene’. God performance er alltid det beste argumentet for at våre kunder skal velge oss også fremover. Dette gjelder ombord i båtene, men like mye i landorganisasjonen. Utfordringen vår industri er oppe i nå er global. Det finnes ingen steder å gjemme seg. Det finnes likevel noen muligheter der ute. Vår tilstedeværelse rundt om i hele verden gjør at vi er aktuelle for jobber der andre kanskje ikke er det. Ett eksempel på det er kontrakten vi har inngått med Chevron i Thailand. Den gir oss arbeid i flere år fremover for ‘Norce Endeavour’ og ‘Nor Captain’. Det er veldig oppmunternde i disse utfordrende tider. Det finnes også flere eksempler jeg kunne dratt frem. Befraktningsteamet vårt jobber på høygear for å finne det som er av muligheter. Jeg er trygg på at de vil lykkes med mye. Nybygget ‘Normand Maximus’ er under slep fra skrogverftet i Romania til Vard Brattvaag hvor hun skal utrustes. En fantastisk båt som jeg gleder meg til skal leveres til sommeren. Jeg er veldig glad for at det er i retningen av mer og mer sofistikerte båter vi har beveget oss. Det er dette som er fremtiden for Solstad. Kompetansen på land og sjø vi har utviklet gjennom mange år gjør at vi stiller sterkt i konkurransen fremover. Å lede er krevende i usikre tider. På den ene siden så må vi passe på at vi tar de grep vi mener er nødvendige for å komme gjennom nedturen. På den andre siden må vi også ha fokus på hvordan vi skal få med oss oppturen når den kommer. Vi har utvidet kontoret i Skudeneshavn og flyttet inn i den nye delen i januar i år. Timingen har vist seg å ikke være optimal, men vi skal være her om 30 år også. La oss se på det som et signal på at vi skal være en sentral aktør i offshore markedet også i fremtiden! Derfor er min oppfordring at vi fortsetter å brette opp ermene. Passer på at vi holder våre kostnader på et fornuftig nivå. Jobber sammen for å levere sikre, effektive operasjoner. Plutselig så snur stemningen til vår fordel igjen. Til slutt vil jeg avrunde med å takke alle for samarbeidet i året som snart er bak oss. Ønske en fredelig jul og ett riktig godt nyttår til alle ansatte på sjø og land, til deres familier, til våre kunder, leverandører og banker og ikke minst til våre pensjonister.

It’s incredible how fast things can change. Only one year ago we were still taken up with obtaining further development and growth. Now our concerns are to ensure that we get through the current slump in the oil industry in the best possible way. We have been seriously reminded that we operate in a cyclic industry. When our customers reduce their activities at the magnitude they’re doing today, it inevitably leads to a heavy reduction in the demand for the services we supply. As a consequence of this situation we have laid up

12 ships and cut our workforce by more than 300. It is dramatic, not least for those who are directly affected, and I’m very sorry that we’ve been compelled to take these actions. I’m in no doubt that the market will return. The crucial question is when. I fear that this recession is going to last for some time, and that it will be painful for the contractor industry. It’s not easy to say how the picture will look in 12-18 months, i.e. when it comes to market players. What I can say, is that our goal is clear: we shall pull through. Not only that, we are going to come out on the other side as an even better company. This signifies that we all need to maintain a steady focus on ‘delivering the goods’. A good performance is always the best argument to persuade our customers to choose us also the next time. This applies onboard the ships, but just as much in the onshore organization. The current challenge faced by our industry is global. There is no hiding place. However, there are still some opportunities out there. Thanks to our presence around the world we are a relevant partner for jobs where some competitors are unable to deliver. One example is a contract we have entered with Chevron in Thailand, which provides work for many years ahead for the ‘Norce Endeavour’ and ‘Nor Captain’. This is a very encouraging piece of news in these challenging times. I could have mentioned other examples. Our chartering department are working at top speed to identify new opportunities. I’m confident that they will succeed in many of their efforts. The newbuilding ‘Normand Maximus’ is under tow from the hull yard in Romania to Vard Brattvaag where it will be outfitted. It’s a fantastic ship and I’m greatly looking forward to its delivery in the summer. I’m pleased to note that we have moved in a direction of increasingly sophisticated ships. This is where the future of Solstad lies. Thanks to our high level of competence built up on land and at sea over many years, we are a strong contender in the upcoming competition. Exercising leadership is a demanding exercise in uncertain times. On the one hand, we need to take the necessary measures in order to get through the slump. On the other hand, we also need to position ourselves for the upswing that is bound to come. We have expanded the Skudeneshavn office and relocated into the new wing in January this year. As it turned out, the timing was not optimal, but we’re going to be here in 30 years’ time, too. Let’s look at it as a signal proving that we shall be a central player in the offshore market also in future! My call is therefore that we continue to roll up our sleeves. We must make sure that costs are kept at a reasonable level. We must work together to deliver safe and effective operations. All of a sudden the sentiment will turn to our advantage again. Rounding off, I would like to thank each and everyone for their cooperation in the year that we soon leave behind. My wishes for a peaceful Christmas and a happy New Year go to all employees at sea and on land, to their families, to our customers, suppliers and banks, and not least to our pensioners.

Viktig kontrakt for Norce Endeavour Important contract for Norce Endeavour Like før Solships gikk i trykken, kom gladmeldingen om at Solstad var tildelt an lang og viktig kontrakt for DLB Norce Endeavour. -Dette er viktig for rederiet generelt, men spesielt for vår satsing rundt ulike engineering-tjenester i Asia, forteller Phil Stewart. Han har vært ansvarlig for kontraktsforhandlingene om DLBen og de tjenester som rederiet nå skal levere utover de maritime operasjonene. Avtalen som nå er inngått for DLBen, er en flerårig kontrakt med Chevron i Thailand, og innbefatter offshore konstruksjons- og installasjonsarbeid for DLB “Norce Endeavour”. DLB “Norce Endeavour” skal som en del av denne avtalen, installere flere nye brønnhodeplattformer og rørledninger for Chevron i «Gulf of Thailand”. Kontrakten starter i 2016 og løper fast

i 4 år, i tillegg til 3 årlige opsjoner. Arbeidet med installasjon av brønnhodeplattformer og rørledninger er en videreføring av Solstads satsing på engineering-tjenester tilknyttet DLBen og organisasjonen som er bygd opp i Singapore. Det forventes å gi en beskjeftigelse for DLBen og involvert personell på ca 200 dager i 2016. –Vi begynner å få en bred erfaring med DLB-ens ulike bruksområder nå, forteller Stewart Massey, men legger til at de kjørte ulike tester for rørlegging tidligere i høst for å sjekke kapasitet og utstyr. Massey er ansvarlig for driften av Norce Endeavor og engineering-arbeidet. Han forteller videre at selskapet nå har ansatt flere ingeniører for å sikre ekstra kapasitet og kompetanse til de kommende operasjonene. I begynnelsen leide ulike kunder DLBen inn for å utføre denne type operasjoner med eget personell, men etter hvert har Solstads organi-

sasjon i Singapore gradvis overtatt flere og mer avanserte oppgaver. Dette er i tråd med rederiets strategi og satsing. Antall brønnhodeplattformer og rørledninger som skal installeres i påfølgende år er ikke fastsatt og vil variere avhengig av Chevron sine produksjonskrav og operasjoner. Solstad vil bistå både med prosjektledelse, prosjektering samt anskaffelser og logistikk gjennom selskapets «DLB Marine Project Group» i Singapore. –Denne kontrakten representerer en videreføring av det gode samarbeidet mellom Chevron og Solstad, forteller Phil Stewart, og forteller at arbeidet startet i 2014 da Norce Endeavour gjennomførte sin første sesongkontrakt i Thailand. Mobiliseringen av DLBen for 2016-sesongen vil starte i januar.


Just before Solships went to press, we received the gratifying message that Solstad had been awarded a long-term, important contract for DLB Norce Endeavour.

-The contract is important to the company as a whole, but especially when it comes to sustaining our commitment to supplying engineering services in Asia, says Phil Stewart. He led the contractual negotiations for the DLB and the services that the company will supply beyond maritime operations. The contract that has been signed is a multiyear contract with Chevron in Thailand, and includes offshore construction and installation work for DLB “Norce Endeavour”. As part of the agreement, DLB “Norce Endeavour” will install several new wellhead platforms and pipelines for Chevron in the Gulf of Thailand. The contract starts in 2016 and runs for a period of four years, in addition to 3 annual options. Work on installing the wellhead platforms and pipelines is a continuation of Solstad’s commitment to the supply of engineering services by the DLB and the organization built up in Singapore. It is expected that the contract will provide occupation for the DLB and involved personnel for around 200 days in 2016. –We’ve gained a broad experience within the DLB’s various areas of application by now, Stewart Massey reports, adding that several tests were run prior to pipelaying this fall in order to check capacity and equipment. Massey is responsible for the operation of the DLB as well as engineering work. He further reports that the company recently has hired several engineers, in order to secure extra capacity and competency for the upcoming operations. Initially, customers chartered the DLB to carry out this type of operation using their own personnel, but gradually Solstad’s Singapore organization has been able to take on more advanced assignments. This is in line with the company’s strategy. The number of wellhead platforms and pipelines to be installed the following year has not yet been finalized, and will depend on Chevron’s production requirements and operations. Solstad will provide assistance to project management, engineering, as well as purchases and logistics through the company’s «DLB Marine Project Group» in Singapore. -This contract represents a continuation of the excellent cooperation between Chevron and Solstad, Phil Stewart says. He reports that the work started in 2014 when the Norce Endeavour carried out its first seasonal contract in Thailand. Mobilization of the DLB for the 2016 season will begin in January.

-Vi ser en enorm opphopning av kapasitet i markedet nå, forteller han. Tidligere års kontraheringer av nybygg ville i seg selv gitt et overskudd av skip, selv med tidligere aktivitetsnivå. Når dette i tillegg møter et markedet med synkende investeringer, skaper det en ganske håpløs situasjon konkluderer han.

Knallhard konkurranse Resultatet av dette er at det er svært mange skip som konkurrerer om svært få jobber, og Skår forteller at befraktningsavdelingen må jobbe knallhardt for å i det hele tatt sikre jobber til skipene – og det på betingelser som er langt under tidligere nivåer. -I dag opererer vi faktisk på nivåer hvor dagratene på korte oppdrag ligger langt under driftskostna-

dene på skipene, forteller Skår, og understreker at dette ikke er noe som kan vedvare over tid.

Må skape balanse For å få balanse i markedet, må det enten tilføres mange nye jobber eller fjernes kapasitet. På dagens oljepris, er oljeselskapene avventendende til investeringer både i nye og eksisternede oljefelt og markedsbalansen må dermed forbedres ved å fjerne tilgjengelige skip. Når vi ser at brorparten av dagens offshoreskip er bygget etter 2007, er det imidlertid vanskelig å velge hvilke skip som må tas ut. -Norske rederier har bygget stadig krafigere og mer avanserte skip de siste årene, forteller Skår, og han synes derfor det er spesielt trist at vi nå står i en situasjon hvor disse skipene ikke har arbeid.


Hans Knut Skår is normally a cheerful man, but with the current situation in the market for offshore ships, he finds little reason to smile. -We’re seeing an enormous accumulation of capacity in the market right now, he reports. The contractions of newbuilding in previous years would in itself have given an excess amount of vessels, even at the activity level as it was then. When this situation in addition meets a market with sinking investments, it creates a pretty hopeless situation, he observes.

Cut-throat competition As a result of this there is a high number of ships competing for very few jobs, and Skår says that the chartering department needs to make intensive efforts to secure jobs for ships – at terms which are far below previous levels. -Today we’re actually operating at levels where the daily rates for short assignments are far below the ships’ operating costs, Skår says. He underlines that this is not a situation that can go on in the long term.

Must create a balance In order to get a balance in the market, either many new jobs must be created, or capacity must be removed. At today’s oil prices, oil companies take a wait-and-see attitude when it

comes to investments both as concerns new and existing oil fields. The market balance therefore needs to be improved by removing available vessels. However, as the majority of today’s offshore ships were built after 2007, it’s hard to choose which ships to pick out for removal. –Norwegians ship-owners have built increasing powerful and advanced vessels in the last years, Skår reports, and he therefore finds it particularly sad that we’re in a situation where these ships have no work.

Partnership and results Even though the market is going through a difficult period, it does not mean that everything is looking dark. Contracts are still being concluded, and sometimes there is good news. Skår cites Normand Flipper’s 15-month contract as an example of what is possible to accomplish with ships that stand out positively in the market. –It’s now more important than ever to deliver good service and operations satisfying customer requirements, Skår states. He emphasizes the importance of continuing the good working relations with the company’s clients, and exploring joint potentials for improved and more efficient operations. –By building on the experiences and relations we have made during the upswing period, we shall succeed in getting through this slump with our position strengthened, he concludes.

Han understreker viktigheten av å fortsette det gode samarbeidet vi har med selskapets klienter og se etter felles muligheter for bedre og mer effektiv drift. –Ved å bygge videre på de erfaringer og relasjoner vi har gjort i oppgangsperioden, skal vi også klare å komme oss styrket gjennom denne nedgangsperioden, avslutter han.

Fra 9 til 3 skip i Brasil From 9 to 3 ships in Brazil - Gjennom seriøs satsing over mange år har Solstad Offshore bygget opp en solid organisasjon her i Brasil. For ikke lenge siden hadde vi ni skip i aktivitet på brasiliansk sokkel. Nå er det bare tre igjen. De andre har ikke oppdrag og ligger i opplag, eller er i ferd med å gå i opplag. Det er viseadministrerende direktør Klaus Døscher i Solstad Brasil som sier dette til Solships. Han legger ikke skjul på at det er trist å se at organisasjonen av dyktige medarbeidere som er bygget opp, har blitt betydelig redusert den siste tiden. - Hele offshorenæringen globalt er rammet av de lave oljeprisene. Likevel er det ekstra vanskelig her i Brasil. For det første har brasilianerne regler hvor utenlandsk flaggede skip må ha arbeidstillatelser som blir fornyet hvert år. Det betyr at selv om vi har langsiktige kontrakter, må vi likevel ha fornyet godkjenning hvert år. Og dersom det da finnes et brasiliansk fartøy som tilfredsstiller de kravene som gjelder for disse operasjonene, vil de kunne ta jobben. - Men i Brasil er lav oljepris bare en del av problemet. Det som gjør det ekstra vanskelig er ringvirkningene av korrupsjonssakene som rulles opp på ulike sektorer i Brasil, og som har rammet det statlige oljeselskapet Petrobras tungt, sier Døscher. Han konstaterer at det har ført til det tar lang tid å få saker avgjort. - En beslutningsvegring ser vi på de fleste nivåer. Beslutningstakere er redde for å ta avgjørelser. Det ser ut til at mange tenker slik at det sikreste er ikke å gjøre noe, for da gjør man i hvert fall ikke noe galt.

Utfordrende Utfordringen nå er å nedskalere så mye vi kan, uten at det rammer kjernen i organisasjonen vår. Vi tror at aktiviteten kommer til å ta seg opp igjen, og at Brasil fortsatt vil være et viktig marked for oss i framtiden og da er det viktig å ha bevart

kjernekompetansen og nøkkelpersonene i organisasjonen slik at vi kan gripe nye muligheter umiddelbart. - Har dere opplevd situasjoner hvor rederiet har tapt kontrakter, og hvor dere etterpå føler at dere kan ha tapt kontrakter fordi andre har smurt beslutningstakere? - Nei, det har vi aldri opplevd. Vi tror ikke den

krystallklare regler for hvordan vi skal forholde oss. Vi opptrer ryddig i alle situasjoner, og har derfor også ingenting imot at myndigheter eller andre kikker oss i kortene, sier Klaus Døscher. Når antallet skip vi har i Brasil nå er nede i tre, er antall ansatte på land og om bord redusert betydelig, forteller Døscher. Det er nå 7 år siden han kom til Solstad, men da

sektoren vi jobber i er så utsatt for korrupsjon. Konkurransen er stor og anbudsrundene transparante. Svært mye av den kontakten supplybransjen har med kunder, leverandører og myndigheter, skjer elektronisk, slik at tingene vil være sporbare. Når det gjelder oss i Solstad har vi også

hadde han allerede arbeidet i Brasil i halvannet år. Klaus Døscher kjenner derfor det brasilianske samfunnet godt. Han er sikker på at selv om rederiet har tapt en del kontrakter i landet nå, vil Solstad komme sterkt tilbake i Brasil.

- Through serious commitment over a number of years Solstad Offshore has built up a solid organization here in Brazil. Not long ago we had nine ships in activity in the Brazilian offshore sector. Now there are only three left. The others have no commissions and are laid up, or are on the point of being laid up.

It is Deputy Managing Director Klaus Døscher of Solstad in Brazil who says this to Solships. He does not hide the fact it’s sad to see the organization of skilled staff that has been built up becoming significantly reduced in recent months. - The entire offshore industry is affected by the low prices of oil, on a global scale. Still, the situation is particularly difficult in Brazil. Firstly, Brazilians have rules which involve that ships registered abroad need to have work permits that are renewed annually. That means that even though we may operate on a long-term contract, we still need to get a renewal every year. And if a Brazilian vessel meets the requirements that apply to these operations, it may get the job. - However, in Brazil a low price of oil is only part of the problem. What makes the situation even worse are the spin-off effects of the corruption

Challenging

- We’re seeing a high level of indecision on most levels. Decision makers are averse to taking decisions. It appears that most of them consider it most safe not to do anything, in fear of doing anything wrong.

- Our challenge right now is to downsize as much as we can, without the core activity of our organization becoming affected. We believe that activities will rebound, and that Brazil will continue to be an important market for us in the future. That’s why it’s important to retain our core skills and hold on to key persons in the organization, so that we may seize the new opportunities at once when they present themselves. - Have you experienced situations where you have lost contracts, and where you have felt you lost the contract because competitors had bribed decision makers? - No, we have never experienced such a situation. We don’t believe that the sector we’re working in is as exposed to corruption as other sectors. Competition is brisk, and the bidding

process is transparent. Most of the contact that the supply ship business has with customers, suppliers and authorities, is done electronically, which means processes are traceable. Besides, Solstad has crystal clear rules when it comes to conduct in such matters. We behave in a correct manner in all situations, and we have noth-

ing against showing our hand to authorities and other parties, Klaus Døscher states. With the number of ships in Brazil having been reduced to three, the number of onshore employees and onboard have been reduced accordingly, Døscher reports. It’s seven years since he joined Solstad, and be-

fore that he had already worked in Brazil for one and a half year. Klaus Døscher therefore knows Brazilian society very well. He is confident that even though the company has lost some contracts in Brazil recently, Solstad will return with a vengeance to Brazil.

Planlagt opplag for 13 skip Lay-up of 13 vessels planned - I alt har vi lagt planer for å legge 13 fartøy i opplag. I tillegg til de som ligger ved vår egen base på Husøy, leier vi kaiplass til de resterende av Karmsund Havnevesen og private eiere. Det er Operations Director Kenneth Lande som sier dette til Solships. - Alle våre skip ligger i såkalt ”varmt opplag”. Det betyr at vi fortsatt har et team av folk som holder oppsyn med skipene, og foretar vedlikeholdet som er påkrevet. Varmt opplag betyr at vi har landstrøm, varme og vi driver med en redusert vedlikehold program av skipene. Vedlikeholdsteamet som holder oppsyn med skipene består av 13 personer, en for hver båt. De har litt forskjellig bakgrunn dekk/maskin, slik at de sammen dekker den kompetansen det er behov for, sier Lande, som forteller at i motsetning til ”kaldt opplag” kan skipene tas ut av opplag på kortere varsel så lenge de ligger i ”varmt opplag”. - All our ships go into a so-called ”hot lay-up”. This means we still have a team of people who’re overseeing the ships, performing the maintenance required. Hot laying-up means that we get electricity and heating from land, and that we’re operating with a reduced maintenance program. The maintenance team looking after the ships counts 13 persons, one for each ship. They have a somewhat different background, deck or

However, it’s no simple matter to re-start operations from a hot layup either. One needs to call in crews, renew certificates, and much more before ships may take up their trade again. - We’re evaluating whether to put the ships into cold lay-up. In this event ships have to undergo an extensive preservation. This entails amongst others tapping tanks/systems so as to avoid frost damage if the temperature onboard were to sink to below 0 degrees, Kenneth Lande says. However, a cold lay-up involves an even more extensive process.

Tøffe tak Nedbemanningen som har pågått i rederiet de siste månedene, har vært en hard prøvelse for alle involverte. Både de ansattes tillitsvalgte og rederiets representanter har jobbet hardt for å gjøre prosessen så rettferdig og forutsigbar som mulig. Han er tillitsvalgt for Sjøoffisersforbundets medlemmer, og en av dem som har måttet gå mange runder både med rederiet og sine medlemmer. –Noen ganger har jeg rett og slett måttet ta meg en «time-out» etter møtene, sier han alvorlig, og forteller hvordan forhandlingene gikk inn på ham. Det er tall som skal spares på papiret, men det er mennesker som berøres i praksis. Kolleger, venner og kjente – det var tøft å se hvem som ble berørt. Rabben understreker likevel at alle har forståelse for rederiets nedbemanning, og at de derfor skjønner de beslutninger som måtte tas. Mens noen av de berørte hadde regnet på ansiennitet, og ventet på telefon, følte andre seg trygge og

ble sjokkert og skuffet da de fikk vite at de ville miste jobben. -Dette har vært en tøff og vanskelig prosess for oss alle, forteller HR Direktør Per Stange og roser samtidig de ansattes representanter og tillitsvalgte for at de har bidratt til å gjøre arbeidet så forutsigbart og effektivt som mulig. -Til syvende og sist er jo dette noe vi gjør for å berge arbeidsplasser i et lengre perspektiv, forteller Stange. Han håper å rekruttere medarbeidere til rederiet så snart offshore-markedet vender tilbake.

The workforce reductions that have been going on in the company in recent months have been a trial for all parties involved. Employee representatives as well as the ship-owner’s representatives have worked hard to make the process as fair and predictable as possible. However, even though working relations have been irreproachable, there is little doubt that it has been a demanding process -I can’t hide the fact that it’s been tough, says Vegar Rabben. He is employee representative for

the members of the Norwegian Officers Association and is one of them who has had to go many rounds with the company and its members. –On some occasions I’ve had to take a time-out after meetings, he says gravely, the negotiations had such a devastating effect on him. On paper there are figures to be saved, while in reality we’re dealing with people who are affected. Colleagues, friends and acquaintances, – it was an ordeal to witness all those being laid off. Rabben nevertheless emphasizes that he understands the company’s policy in this situation, and the decisions that had to be taken. While some of the affected personnel had counted on seniority, and were waiting for a telephone, others felt secure and were shocked and disappointed when they learnt they were going to lose their job. – It has been a difficult process for all of us, HR Director Per Stange states, at the same time praising the employee representatives for having contributed to making the process as predictable and efficient as possible. -When it comes down to it this is something we have to do to save jobs in the longer perspective, Stange reasons. He hopes to be able to recruit personnel to the company as soon as the offshore market returns.

De har vi skjermet, og for de som har vært på båter som er gått i opplag, har vi funnet plass til dem på andre båter. Det er Liv Bente Mevik som sier dette til Solships. Dermed vil alle kunne gjøre ferdig læretiden, og ta fagprøve. - Solstad Offshore forpliktelser for den enkelte lærling gjelder fram til bestått fagprøve. Men etter det er det klart at det ikke er lett å få seg arbeid verken som matros eller motormann. Alternativet for de fleste vil derfor være å gå videre på fagskole. Etter 2 år der vil de kunne seile som kadetter fram til laveste styrmanns- eller maskinistsertifikat, sier Mevik.

Prisbelønnet kadett Den ble en positiv opplevelse for en av Solstads kadetter, da NAFC Marine Centre avholdt sitt årsmøte på Shetland, tidligere i år.

I denne forbindelse, ble Solstad-kadetten Thomas Stewart tildelt æresbevisningen «Northern Lighthouse Board». Prisen fikk han på grunn av særdeles gode resultater og tilbakemeldinger. Shona Cardno, fra Solstads kontor i Aberdeen, var til stede på samlingen, og representerte rederiet for anledningen. Hun forteller at Steward hadde mesteparten av sin kadett-tid på Normand Installer, og at han fikk veldig gode referanser derfra. Stewart er kjent som en hardtarbeidende og dyktig kadett, og satte naturlig nok veldig pris på utmerkelsen. Vi gratulerer Thomas Stewart med prisen, og ønsker ham lykke til med hans videre karridere.

Most outstanding cadet of the year

One of Solstad’s cadets came in for a positive experience when the NAFC Marine Centre held its annual meeting at Shetland previously this year. On this occasion Solstad cadet Thomas Steward was presented with the Northern Lighthouse Board prize for most outstanding cadet of the year, and for receiving a number of positive feedbacks. Shona Cardno, from Solstad’s Aberdeen office, was present at the event, representing the shipowner on this occasion. She reports that Mr. Stewart spent most of his offshore period on the Normand Installer, where he received the very

best references. Mr. Stewart has earned a reputation as a hard working and conscientious cadet, and naturally enough he was delighted with the presentation. We congratulate Thomas Stewart on the prize, and wish him the best of luck in his further career.

Fra Norge til UK -og tilbake igjen I forrige utgave av Solships, kunne vi fortelle at deler av den tekniske driften var flyttet over til Aberdeen og at Malcolm Rosie overtok jobben som Teknisk direktør etter Geir Inge Haugeberg (som skulle fokusere på rederiets nybygg). Ett år etterpå er forholdene igjen i forandring, og Aberdeen-kontoret blir nå kraftig nedbemannet. Ikke overraskende er den bakenforliggende årsaken nok en gang den uventede endringen i markedsforholdene, og behovet for å gjøre effektiviserende tiltak for å møte disse. Det er Hans Ånensen som foreløpig har fått jobben med å overta ledelselsen av teknisk avdeling fra Skudeneshavn. Han rykker da opp som

Konstituert Direktør fra sin tidligere stilling som Teknisk sjef. -Det var med tungt hjerte vi måtte gjøre disse endringene, forteller Ånensen, og understreker den gode kvaliteten på arbeidet som involvert personell fra Aberdeen-kontoret har levert de siste årene. -Behovet for effektivisering og kostnadsbesparelser er nå noe som overskygger alt annet, forteller Ånensen, og forklarer de vurderinger som ligger bak endringen. Alle avdelinger er nå pålagt å finne mer kostnadseffektive løsninger for sine oppgaver. -Ved å flytte aktiviteter fra driften tilbake til hovedkontoret forsøker vi nå å strømlinjeforme driften, forteller Ånensen. Hans Ånensen har jobbet som teknisk sjef i Solstad siden 2012 og kom den gang fra tilsvarende stilling i Teekay. Samtidig som Ånensen nå rykker opp som Teknisk Direktør, rykker også Conrad Melhus foreløpig opp til rollen som Tek-

nisk Sjef. De to har jobbet godt i lag i flere år, og er derfor trygge på at de også vil finne en god arbeidsfordeling nå som de går inn i nye roller. Endelig struktur for organisasjonen skal avklares i løpet av 2016. Utover de rent formelle endringene som nå er gjort, vil også en del skip få ny inspektør. Ånensen forteller at dette vil bli fulgt opp på en måte som sikrer at eksisterende prosesser ikke forsinkes og at skipene får den oppfølging de trenger. Den nye direktøren er opptatt av at driften skal være et teamarbeid, og ønsker at dette både skal prege forholdene mellom mannskapene om bord, mellom de ulike skift og mellom skip og land. -Det er bare gjennom felles innsats at vi kan klare disse utfordringene vi nå står overfor, konkulderer han.


In the last edition of Solships, we reported that parts of technical operations had been relocated to Aberdeen and that Malcolm Rosie had taken over the position as Technical Director after Geir Inge Haugeberg (who would be focusing on newbuildings). One year afterwards conditions have changed again, and operations at the Aberdeen office are now being radically downsized. Not surprisingly, the ulterior cause is yet again unexpected changes in market conditions, and the need to introduce efficiency measures in order to meet the new situation. Hans Ånensen has been temporarily assigned the responsibility of taking over management of the Technical operational organization from

Skudeneshavn. This means he is temporarary promoted to Technical Director, from his former position as Technical Manager. –We deeply regretted having to make these changes, Ånensen says, underlining the good quality of work performed by personnel at the Aberdeen office these years. -The need for efficiency measures and cost savings now overshadows everything else, Ånensen states, as he explains the assessments upon which the restructuring is based. All departments have now been tasked to find more cost effective solutions for their activities. –By relocating activities back to the main office we’re now trying to streamline operations, Ånensen says. Hans Ånensen has been employed as Technical Manager of Solstad since 2012, he then came from a similar position with Teekay. Parallel to Ånensen now being promoted to Technical Director, Conrad Melhus will temporarily take over

the role as Technical Manager. The two-some have worked together for a number of years, and are confident that they will find an appropriate division of work. Final structure of the organization will be defined during 2016. In addition to the purely formal changes being made, some vessels will be assigned a new inspector. Ånensen reports that this will be followed up in a manner ensuring that existing processes are not delayed, and so that ships get the follow-up they require. The new director is concerned to ensure that operations are carried out as teamwork. He wishes teamwork to characterize relations between the crews onboard, between the various shifts, and between the ship and the onshore organization. –Its only through concerted efforts we shall be able to weather out the storm we’re facing at the moment, he concludes.

Ettersom rederiet har fått stadig større skip, har dette også medført at man har måttet se etter verksteder som har tilstrekkelig store (og brede) dokker. Dette er ingen selvfølge alle steder i verden. -Vi har faktisk en egen person som nå gjennomgår spesifikasjonene til skipsverksteder i Middelhavet, US Gulf og Vest-Afrika, forteller Ånensen. Kriteriet vi hat satt, er om de kan ta i mot Normand Maximus. -Klarer de den, kan vi være trygge på at de også klarer de andre skipene i flåten, konkluderer han.

Overhauls at shipyards and emergency dockings are costly and time-consuming processes for the company. It is therefore natural to devote additional attention to these processes in connection with the ongoing efficiency measures. -Solstad has always focused on obtaining efficient dockings, says acting Technical Director Hans Ånensen, who adds that at times like these it is particularly important to keep costs and time consumption within budgets. With ships becom-

ing increasingly bigger, it has meant looking for yards that have sufficiently large (and wide) docks. Such yards are not always easy to find in all places of the world. -As a matter of fact we have a dedicated person who is now reviewing the specifications of shipyards in the Mediterranean, US Gulf and West Africa, Ånensen tells us. We have set the criterion that the yard must be able to receive the Normand Maximus. –If it can manage to do that, we can rest assured that it can also handle the other ships in our fleet, he concludes.

Standardisering av Catering Drift Standardization of Catering Operations I en tid med nedbemanninger både i oljebransjen og i Solstad, ble det lagt merke til da rederiet annonserte etter folk til nyopprettet stilling som Catering Manager. Selv om det er mange likheter i hvordan catering har blitt organisert på båtene våre, har vi ikke hatt en standard profil på denne delen av virksomheten, forklarer Operasjons Direktør Kenneth Lande. Han forklarer videre at dette nå skal standard-

iseres, slik at man får en helhetlig profil også på denne delen av flåtens aktiviteter. Dette vil både gi et mer helhetlig inntrykk for de klienter vi forholde oss til, samtidig som det forenkler mulighetene for felles sparetiltak. -Den nyoprettede stillingen vil jobbe med utarbeidelse av Solstads standard innen catering, som går på renhold, menyutvalg og proviantering. Dette arbeidet vil gjøres i nær dialog med rederiets forpleiningssjefer og vil medføre flere kostnadsreduserende tiltak, samt at vi skal opprettholde vår standard på skipene, forteller Lande.

Med de store mengder proviant som kjøpes inn, er det også store muligheter for besparelser. -Vi handler proviant for ca 120 millioner kroner i året, forteller innkjøpssjef Andreas Kallestein, og forklarer hvordan selv marginale forbedringer på effektiviteten i innkjøp vil gi store besparelser for rederiet. Det er Kirsten Sunnanå som er ansatt i stillingen som Catering Manager. Hun kommer fra stillingen som daglig leder i bakerikjeden Haugli, og har flere års erfaring fra offshore og onshore catering-drift. Sunnanå begynner i Solstad i januar 2016.


In a time characterized by workforce reductions, both in the oil industry and in Solstad, it attracted come attention when the company advertised it was looking for a person to fill a new position as Catering Manager. There are a number of similarities as to how catering has been organized on our ships, but we have not had a standard profile for this part of the business before, explains Operations Director Kenneth Lande. He further explains that this part of the operation will now be standardized, so as to provide a holistic profile for this part of the fleet’s activities as well. This will give our clients a more uniform impression, at the same time as it will simplify the efforts of obtaining efficiency gains across the whole company. -The newly created position will work to develop a Solstad catering standard, which includes cleaning, selection of menus, and supplies. The work will be carried out in close dialogue with the company’s catering managers, and will lead to a number of cost reducing measures, but we will maintain our standards on the vessels, Lande says. Considering the large volumes of supplies being purchased there is a great potential for savings. -We buy provisions worth 120 million NOK a year, Purchasing Manager Andreas Kallestein states. He explains how even marginal efficiency improvements may spell great savings for the ship-owner. Kirsten Sunnanå was hired as the new Catering Manager. She comes from a position as General Manager of bakery chain Haugli, and has several years experience from off- and onshore cartering management. Sunnanå will take up her position with Solstad January 2016.

Det er ikke vanskelig å merke stoltheten i stemmen til personellet som jobber med nybygg nummer 830, eller Normand Maximus som vi liker å kalle det. Her bygges et Solstad-skip uten sidestykke, skal vi tro de som er involvert. Det ligger an til å bli en svært imponerende båt. Leder for byggetilsynet, kaptein Bjørn Rønnevik, har jobbet med nybygget til Normand Maximus siden 2013, og logger med det sitt nybygg nummer 6 i Solstad. Selv om tidligere prosjekter inkluderer båter som Normand Installer, Normand Oceanic og Normand Vision, karakteriserer han dette som det klart mest avanserte skipet han har vært borti så langt. Kunden har hatt klare forventninger til hvilke oppgaver skipet skal være i stand til å utføre, og resultatet har blitt et allsidig og avansert fartøy.

Rønnevik forteller videre at byggeprosessen så langt har gått svært bra, selv om det selvsagt har vært flere utfordringer under vegs. Disse har imidlertid blitt løst raskt og effektivt, så byggetilsynskapteinen er full av lovord om samarbeidet med verftet. Byggingen av Maximus er da også en stor og viktig jobb for Vard, som på det meste sysselsatte mer enn 3000 mann i verftets ulike avdelinger.

På grunn av størrelsen på skipet, ble byggingen av skroget delt mellom to verft i Romania. Forskipet ble bygget i Tulca og akterskipet ble bygget i Constanta. Dette stilte ekstra store krav til nøyaktighet i byggeprosessen, men da de to skrogene ble slått sammen i september, kunne man konstatere at alt passet – faktisk på centimeteren! Da Solships gikk i trykken, var skroget på veg til Brattvåg, Norge, hvor det lå an til å ankomme i midten av desember. Her skal skroget utrustes innvendig, og kranene blir montert på dekk. Antatt levering for Normnd Maximus er satt til juli 2016.

It is not hard to discern the pride in the voices of personnel who are working on newbuilding 830, or Normand Maximus which we like to call it. Here a Solstad ship matched by none is being built, if we are to believe the parties involved. It looks set to become a very impressive vessel. Head of construction supervision, Captain Bjørn Rønnevik, has been working on the newbuilding for Normand Maximus since 2013, thereby logging his 6th newbuilding for Solstad. Former projects include ships like the Normand Installer, Normand Oceanic and Normand Vision. Nevertheless, he characterizes this ship as the most advanced he has seen so far in his career. The customer has expressed clear expectations as to what tasks the ships should be capable of carrying out, and the result has become an advanced and versatile vessel. -I’m particularly pleased with the comfortable width of the ship, Rønnevik says, eagerly. Being equipped with two cranes of 900 and 150 tonnes, the ship can operate at up to 3000 m ocean depth, which requires a good stability. Thanks to the solid 33 m width, the ship will remain stable in the sea, even with high waves.

is full of praise for the cooperation with the shipyard. Then again, the building of Maximus is a major and important job for Vard, which at most employed more than 3000 persons within the yard’s different sections.


A construction stage awaited with some excitement was the hook-up of the forepart and afterbody of the ship. Because of its size, construction of the hull was split between two Romanian yards. The forepart was built in Tulca and the afterbody in Constanta. This demanded meticulous accuracy in the construction process, but when the two hulls were hooked up in September, everything fit exactly – to the centimeter! When Solships went to press, the hull was on its way to Brattvåg, Norway, where it was scheduled to arrive mid December. Here the ship’s interior will be outfitted, and the deck cranes installed. Assumed delivery of Normand Maximus is July 2016.

Normand Ivan has relocated drilling rig Ocean Rover more than 100 times to new positions on Kikeh, and it has also towed the rig to West Papua and Singapore. What is more, as a construction vessel it has also participated in a number of installations in the waters around Malaysia, Skår reports. - Even though Murphy is now about to complete its drilling program in the area, Skår hopes it will be possible to provide new contracts for Normand Ivan in the not too distant future.

Når Normand Maximus er ferdig til sommeren mener Saipem de har verktøyet som skal til for å møte utfordringene på dypt vann i årene som kommer. - I løpet av de neste fire årene skal det legges mer enn 10.000 km rørledninger på mer enn 1000 prosjekter rundt om i verden. Det kommer til å være stort fokus på å spare kostnader. Dypvannsprosjektene fremover vil kreve at stadig flere felt bygges ut med nye løsninger havbunnen, sier prosjektleder Carlo Fuse til Solships. De mange utfordringene krever en helt ny type fartøyer, som kan redusere behovet for å bruke større og dyrere konstruksjonsskip. Den nye skipstypen må være allsidig og kunne brukes på et bredt spekter av oppdrag og prosjekter. - Vi i Saipem mener Normand Maximus er det skipet som vil være i stand til å møte de utfordringene som kommer framover. Det kan ta stor last, og holde stor fart slik at det er egnet til å mobilisere på prosjekter hvor som helst i verden. Og ikke minst er det bygget for ekstreme værforhold, uansett om det er i Barentshavet eller utenfor Mosambik, sier Fuse. Carlo Fuse er den av Saipems folk som har tettest samarbeid med Solstad. – Særlig har jeg hatt et tett og godt samarbeid med direktør for nybygg, Geir Inge Haugeberg og kaptein Bjørn Rønnevik, som også er de som har fulgt byggingen av Normand Maximus i Romania, sier Fuse. - Alle de involverte i Saipem ser fram til at Normand Maximus skal bli ferdig til sommeren. Skipet vil den første tiden etter planen bli benyttet på undervannsprosjekter, som vi har i Middelhavet, Mexicogolfen og utenfor kysten av Vest Afrika, men det er bygget for å kunne ta oppdrag hvor som helst i verden, sier Carlo Fuse til Solships.

Saipem has been a key customer of Solstad Offshore for more than a decade, and its importance is not likely to decline in the years to come. Come spring the Normand Maximus will be ready, and with this vessel Saipem believes it has the tool required to meet deep water challenges in the years ahead. - During the next four years we will be laying more than 10.000 km of flexible and umbilical products pipelines in 1000 projects around the world. There will be an unrelenting focus on cutting costs. Future deep water projects will depend on an increasing number of fields being developed by using new subsea solutions, Project Manager Carlo Fuse says to Solships. These challenges demand an entirely new type of ship, which may reduce the need for using large and more expensive construction vessels. The new type of ship must be versatile, and lend itself to being used for a wide-ranging specter of jobs and projects. - Saipem believes the Normand Maximus is a ship that will be able to meet the challenges that

will be posed ahead. It can take in big loads, and maintain a high speed, which makes it suitable for being mobilized to projects anywhere in the world. And not to forget, it has been built to withstand extreme weather conditions, whether it be in the Barents Sea or off Mozambique, Fuse says. Carlo Fuse is one of Saipem’s personnel who has the closest working relations with Solstad. –In particular I have enjoyed close working relations with the director of newbuildings, Geir Inge Haugeberg and Captain Bjørn Rønnevik, who also have been supervising the building of Normand Maximus in Romania, Fuse says. - All parties involved at Saipem are looking forward to the commissioning of the Normand Maximus next summer. Under current plans, the ship will initially be used on subsea projects we have going in the Mediterranean, Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of Vest Africa, but it’s built in order to take on assignments anywhere in the world, Carlo Fuse´ concludes to Solships.

Solstads miljøprogram – viktigere enn noen gang? Solstad’s environmental program – more important than ever? Solstads grønne operasjoner er bygd på en mangeårig innsats for å drive rederiets skip på en effektiv og miljøvennlig måte. I en tid med kostnadsfokus og innsparinger, blir dermed miljøprogrammet aktuelt på en ny måte. Tekst og foto: Heine Birkeland

-Det overordnede fokus for våre grønne operasjoner, vil jo alltid være miljøhensyn, men samtidig må vi ikke glemme at et godt miljøtiltak ofte også er et kostnadsbesparende tiltak, forteller Solstads miljøingeniør Svein Erik Isaksen. Et godt miljøtiltak dreier seg om å bruke ressurser på en mest mulig effektiv måte, og med det reduserer man også utslipp og svinn til et minimum. Ved å utnytte ressursene best mulig, enten det gjelder drivstoff, energi, kjemikalier, vaskemidler e.l. så betyr jo redusert forbruk både mindre forurensing og mindre svinn. Godt miljøarbeid er derfor en vinn-vinn situasjon for både miljø og økonomi, og dette er noe Solstads miljøprogram etter hvert kan vise mye dokumentasjon på. Miljøprogrammet Solstad Green Operations, har i alle år fokusert på å identifisere små og store tiltak som kan bidra til mer effektiv drift. Alle disse tiltakene blir kontinuerlig registrert og publiseres også for interne og eksterne gjennomganger.

Solstad’s green operations build on long-standing efforts aimed at operating company vessels in an efficient and eco-friendly manner. In a time characterized by a focus on cost cuttings and savings, the environmental program assumes a new relevance. -The overall focus of our green operations will always be environmental considerations. However, we must not forget that a successful environmental measure also is a cost saving measure, says Solstad’s environmental engineer, Svein Erik Isaksen. A good environmental measure involves using resources in an optimum and efficient manner, thereby reducing emissions and waste to a minimum. By exploiting resources in the best pos24

Dette gir store gevinster for rederiets kunder som har fått sine drivstoffkostnader redusert, men også for rederiet som har redusert vedlikeholdskostnaden betraktelig. -I en tid med stort fokus på kostnadsbesparelser er det derfor fortsatt mulig å videreutvikle rederiets miljøarbeid, ja kanskje er det viktigere enn noen gang, avslutter Svein Erik Isaksen.

Sound environmental work is a win-win situation for the environment and the economy alike, which Solstad’s environmental program is able to document. Solstad Green Operations has over many years consistently focused on identifying small and large measures that may help to achieve more efficient operations. All measures are continuously recorded and are also published for internal and external reviews. Any such measure recorded on the company’s ships is made available to the rest of the fleet, including ships with similar engines and equipment. In this manner we learn from each other, at the same time as the possibility of error reporting is reduced. Everybody has access to the reports, and all details

are open for verification. Each approved operation gives the individual ship «points» in the company’s internal competition, and rewards may be used for welfare activities onboard. Additionally, we sponsor the Rainforest Foundation with a specific amount. The gain from all these measures is enormously positive to the environment as well as the economy, and is reflected in fuel savings and a reduction of maintenance costs. A reduction in fuel costs results in considerable gains for company customers, while the company is able to cut maintenance costs significantly. -However, it’s still possible to carry the environmental program further. In this day and age, with an increased focus on cost savings, it may be more important than ever before, concludes Svein Erik Isaksen.

Solstad Offshore klatrer på listen for klimaledelse Solstad Offshore climbs the list for climate management Hvert år legger Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) frem en oversikt over selskaper som har levert særskilt gode miljøresultater. CDP er en organisasjon basert i Storbritannia, og som rangerer de største bedriftene i verden i forhold til deres fokus på reduksjon av klimagassutslipp. Investorene bak CDP representerer en tredjedel av verdens investeringskapital, så de beslutninger som tas her blir veldig tonegivende for de ulike bransjene.

Every year Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) submits an overview of companies which have delivered outstanding environment results. CDP is an organization based in Great Britain, which ranges the largest companies in the world in comparacent to their focus on reduction of climate gases. The investors behind CDP represent a third of the world’s invested capital, which means that decisions being made here carry a lot of weight within the various industries.

-Innsatsen fra CDP er nøkkelen til suksess for å oppnå en global, miljøvennlig industri i det 21. århundre, uttaler FNs Generalsekretør BanKi-Moon. Han har tidligere fremhevet hvordan informasjon om miljøprestasjoner hjelper investorer å ta mer effektive valg i sin innsats mot klimaendringene. –Det å bli inkludert på denne listen, er i seg selv en liten prestasjon, forteller miljøingeniør Svein Erik Isaksen. Han gleder seg over at Solstad nå også forbedrer sine resultater til 99 av 100 mulige poeng i 2015, mot 92 poeng i 2014.

Kapteinsamlingene 2015 Captains’ gatherings in 2015 Ett av årets høydepunkter i Solstad, har i alle år vært å samle skipsledelse og kontoransatte til rederikonferanser i Norge. Rederikonferansene har samlet medarbeidere, bokstavlig talt fra hele verden, til viktige møter og gjennomgang. I år ble det mindre samlinger enn normalt, og på grunn av innsparinger var det kun kapteinene som ble samlet denne gang. Like fullt var samlingene kanskje viktigere enn noen gang. -Vår bransje har vært gjennom en årelang oppgangsperide, innledet CEO Lars Peder Solstad, før han gikk over til å beskrive noen av de utfordringer som nå ligger foran oss. Det er mye som tyder på at det vil komme store endringer for offshore-bransjen, at mange skip vil skifte eiere og kanskje også at noen rederier vil forsvinne. -I slike tider som dette stilles det ekstra store krav til både drift og ledelse, og det er derfor viktig at vi alle trekker sammen og at vi trekker i

samme retning, kommenterte Solstad, før han konstaterte at han var trygg på at vi med felles innsats vil sikre at rederiet kommer gjennom denne nedgangsperioden som et styrket selskap. Deltakerne på kapteinsamlingene gikk som vanlig gjennom ulike fokustema med rederiets avdelingsledere, og hadde også avsatt tid til gruppearbeid og møter med kontaktpersoner på kontoret.

One of the annual highlights in Solstad has always been gathering ship management and office workers for shipping conferences in Norway. The shipping conferences have brought together employees, from literally the whole world, for important meetings and reviews. This year there were smaller gatherings than usual, and due to cost cutting it has only been

the captains who met this time. Nevertheless, the gatherings may have been more important than ever before. “Our line of business has enjoyed a lengthy upturn,” said Lars Peder Solstad, CEO, before he started to describe some of the challenges we are currently facing. There is every indication that great changes are coming that will affect the offshore industry, that many ships will change owners and that perhaps some shipping companies will disappear.

Aanensen skulle egentlig hatt medaljen i fjor, men måtte da stå ekstra om bord, og rakk ikke hjem til noen av samlingene.

Knut Lussand:

Det er vanskelig å gi et sammendrag av Knut Lussands karriere i Solstad. Få, om noen, har vært innom like mange skipstyper og operasjonsområder i sitt arbeid for rederiet. Med sin solide erfaring og sitt skarpe blikk for innovative løsninger, har den lavmælte mannen opparbeidet seg et solid omdømme i det maritime miljøet. Da han gikk av med pensjon i januar 2015, hadde han vært 32 år i rederiet. Vi synes det kvalifiserer for et intervju med Solships og inviterte den pensjonerte direktøren for Forretningsutvikling til en prat. Knut Lussand er født i Kinsarvik i Hardanger, og vokste opp på Lussand i Hardanger, et lite stykke nord-øst for Norheimsund. Han reiste til sjøs i 1961 og startet da en karriere so bokstavlig talt skulle ta ham til alle verdenshjørner. Når han nå ser tilbake, har det vært et eventyr med mange spennende erfaringer og interessante opplevelser.

Ansatt «i fart» Knut Lussand var om bord på Den Norske Amerikalinjens «Oslofjord», da han i Kiel-kanalen ble oppmerksom på en annonse i Sjøfartsidene som fortalte at Solstad Rederi trengte folk. «Oslofjord» skulle selges, så han var på jakt etter ny jobb, og sendte inn en søknad. Før han var ankommet Finland, hadde han fått tilbakemelding fra John Halvdan Falnes. Han var ansatt i Solstad og øn-

sket som kaptein på «Lloyd Manhattan». Etter overlevering av “Oslofjord” til nye eiere i Jakarta, Indonesia, bar det av gårde til Rio de Janeiro. Her gikk han om bord og overtok Solstads nye skip, som gikk i linjefart mellom Brasil og den amerikanske østkysten. Etter at Lloyd Brasiliero-charten var slutt ble det en tur for “Lloyd Manhatten” fra “Lakene” i USA til Sør- og Øst-Afrika med forskjellige bistandsmidler. Skipet ble imidlertid solgt, og han seilte det derfor til Singapore, hvor det ble overlevert til ny eier.

Intensiv opplæring Lussand reiste hjem til Norge, og ble satt på opplæring på rederiets offshore-skip. Opplæringsperioden var på hele 3 uker, fordelt mellom “Normand Flower” og “Normand Engineer”. Det var

mye nytt å sette seg inn i, men manøvrering og operasjon gikk greit for den erfarne kapteinen. Han minnes fortsatt møtet med vinterstormene i Nordsjøen. De var ekstra harde det første året, men ellers var det mest som en kuriositet. Han hadde jo vært ute noen vinternetter før den godeste Lussand.

Uten telefon I 1982 hadde Solstad blitt med på en nysatsing i Kina, som skulle vise seg å bli et tidkrevende prosjekt for Lussand. Kina hadde besluttet å utforske mulige oljeressurser i Sør-Kinahavet og Solstad var en av tre utenlandske partnere som fikk være med på satsingen. Lussand ble sendt av gårde for å følge oppstarten av virksomheten, og planen var at han skulle være der en 3 måneds tid. Det viste seg


raskt at det trengtes mer oppfølging enn dette. Mye mer. Tre måneder skulle bli til tre og et halvt år! –Det var en interessant tid, minnes Lussand. Kontrastene til dagens høyteknologiske Kina er enorm, og han må le når han forteller hvordan han måtte reise til Hong Kong for å ringe hjem til Norge. Det var ingen telefonforbindelser fra Kina til Europa, så annenhver lørdag dro Lussand til Hong Kong for å ringe hjem til Per Gunnar Solstad på kontoret!

To kinesere En annen utfordring for virksomheten var språket. Nesten ingen snakket engelsk i Kina på den tiden, og i det kinesiske «rederiet» som staten hadde opprettet, var det kun to personer som snakket engelsk.

–Han ene var 70 år og han andre var 85 år, humrer Lussand, som likevel er full av lovord om den bistanden han fikk fra disse to karene. Uten dem, hadde det nok ikke gått, forklarer han. Satsingen i Kina ble ikke noe stort eventyr for Solstad. Den kinesiske arbeidsmodellen var basert på at man ble tildelt arbeidsoppgaver utfra en politisk beslutning om at alle skulle ha jobb. Følgelig var det tilfeldige kompetanseprofiler og minimale maritime kunnskaper blant de som havnet i rederiets tjeneste. Til slutt måtte Lussand faktisk flagge skipene om fra Kina til Panama, for å få om bord fillipinsk og norsk mannskap. Først da klarte man å bemanne båtene med kompetent personell. -Det var første gang noen hadde flagget om et kinesisk skip, så det ble en langvarig og vanskelig prosess, minnes Lussand, men godt hjulpet av sine engelsktalende konsulenter, fikk

han ordnet det til slutt.

Hjem igjen Etter at det kinesiske prosjektet ble avsluttet, dro Lussand nok en gang hjem til Norge, og ble denne gang engasjert på rederikontoret i Skudeneshavn. Her ble han ansatt som maritim inspektør, og i Solships fra 1987 kan vi lese at det er en travel mann som er mye på reis. Lussand brukte mye tid til å bli kjent med skip, mannskaper og operasjonsforhold. Etter hvert så han noen spennende muligheter for nye oppdrag for rederiet.

Slepevirksomhet Frem til slutten på 80-tallet, var det utenlandske aktører som dominerte slepevirksomheten i Nordsjøen. Når produksjonsplattformer skulle slepes ut og innstalleres, var det britiske, tyske

og hollandske rederier som ble forespurt å stille båter til disse oppdragene og ratene var basert på mobilisering av taubåter fra havner langt unna Norge (Hawaii, Singapore, Cape Town etc). Disse konkraktene viste seg derfor å være svært lukrative for norske rederier. Utfordringen var imidlertid at det ikke var noen norske rederier som på denne tidgen hadde nok skip til å klare slike slepejobber på egen hånd. Sammen med Farstad, Viking og Eidesvik inngikk derfor Solstad et samarbeid om selskapet Nortow, hvor de ellers konkurrerende rederiene gikk sammen om å løse større og tyngre slepeoppdrag. Samarbeidet viste seg å være både effektivt og konkurransedyktig, og dette førte til at de utenlandske aktørene raskt ble utkonkurrert.

sen er noe oppskrytt, sier Lussand, og det virker derfor som han setter pris på en tur innom på Solstads kontor i Skudeneshavn denne desemberdagen. Skal vi dømme utifra alle hyggelige tilbakemeldinger som strømmet på de timene han var innom og gjorde intvervjuet, er det noe han burde gjøre langt oftere!

Nyvinnende nybygg Det har blitt mange nybygg for Solstad, siden oppgangsperioden på begynnelsen av 1990-tallet og Knut Lussand har vært med på de aller fleste av dem. Lussand ble etter hvert direktør for rederiets forretningsutvikling, og bisto dermed enten som rådgiver og veileder, men noen ganger også med svært dedikert oppfølging. Normand Subsea og DLBen er prosjekter som krevde ekstra mye oppfølging, og som han dermed la ned mye arbeid i. -Normand Subsea var et nyvinnende skip som skulle ha flere moonpools enn man noen gang hadde hatt, forteller Lussand. Det skulle vise seg å bli et prosjekt som krevde veldig mye testing for å finne optimale løsninger og design. -Til sammen tilbragte vi mange uker ved test-tanken i Lyngby i Danmark, forteller Lussand og forteller om tidkrevende og nøyaktige eksperimenter som måtte utføres med stor presisjon. Tanken til NTNU, som hadde vært flittig brukt til andre prosjekter, hadde ikke nok ledig kapasitet til de testene man trengte for dette skipet. Et annet prosjekt som skulle vise seg å bli svært omfattende, var DLBen som ble bygget av daværende Nor Offshore i 2009. –Våre krav til utforming og kvalitet, var høyere enn det man hadde vært borti for denne type fartøy tidligere, sier Lussand, og forteller om en byggefase som ble krevende både for verft og rederi. –Men så ble det jo også et svært solid og allsidig fartøy, som vi nå oppnår både gode operasjonelle og kommersielle resultater på, konstaterer han.

Oppskrytt? For en mann som var vant med travle dager og mange prosjekter, var det en stor overgang å bli pensjonist. Knut Lussand holdt da også ut til han var 70 år, men i januar i år, meldte han omsider

Giving a summary of Knut Lussand’s career in Solstad is not easily done. Few persons, if any, have dealt with such a large number of different ship designs and operational fields. With his solid experience and keen eye for innovative solutions, the low-voiced man soon acquired a weighty reputation in the maritime community. When he retired in January 2015, he had been employed with the shipping company for all of 32 years. We believe this qualifies for an interview with Solships and invited the former Manager of Business Development for a chat.

Knut Lussand was born in Kinsarvik, Hardanger, and grew up at Lussand in the same region. He went to sea in 1961, embarking on a career that would literally take him to all corners of the globe. Looking back it has been a true adventure holding a number of exciting and interesting experiences.

Job offer at sea Knut Lussand was onboard the Norwegian America Line’s «Oslofjord», in the Kiel canal, when he became aware of an ad in Sjøfartstidende announcing that Solstad Rederi was hiring crews. The «Oslofjord» was up for sale. He was looking for a new job so he sent in an application. Before he had arrived in Finland, he had received a response from John Halvdan Falnes, offering him employment as Captain on the «Lloyd Manhattan». Following handover of “Oslofjord” to its new owners in Jakarta, Indonesia, he headed for Rio de Janeiro. There he embarked on and took command of Solstad’s newest ship, which operated in a trade between Brazil and the American east coast. After the end of the Lloyd Brasiliero charter, a trip on “Lloyd Manhatten” from the American Lakes to South and East Africa carrying development aids was next. However, the ship was sold, and he sailed it to Singapore, where it was handed over to the new owner.

Intensive training Lussand returned to Norway, where he was put on training on two of Solstad’s offshore vessels,


the “Normand Flower”and “Normand Engineer”, for a period of 3 weeks. There was much to learn, however maneuvering and operations came easy to the experienced captain. He still recalls the first meeting with the North Sea winter storms. They felt tough the first year, but otherwise they seemed more like a curiosity. Lussand had weathered the storm before.

No telephone

As it turned out the project required extensive testing in order to identify optimal solutions and design. – Overall we spent many weeks at the testing tank in Lyngby, Denmark, he relates, as it was necessary to carry out a number of time-consuming experiments with a large degree of precision. Two English-speaking Chinese Another challenge was the language. Hardly anyone spoke English in China at that time. At the Chinese «shipping company» established by the state, there were only two persons who spoke English. –One was 70 years old, and the other 85, Lussand chuckles, but he is nevertheless full of praise for the assistance the two guys gave him. Without them, things would have been impossible, he explains. The Chinese venture did not result in any great success for Solstad. The Chinese working model was based on assigning tasks with basis in a political decision that every citizen should have a job. Consequently, the skills of personnel were often random and they had minimal maritime knowledge. In the end Lussand was forced to reflag ships from China to Panama, in order to be able to take on Filipino and Norwegian crews. Only then did it become possible to man the ships with qualified personnel. -It was the first time that a Chinese ship had

Towing operations Until end 80s, North Sea towing operations were dominated by foreign players. Whenever production platforms needed to be towed out and installed, the ship-owners who were invited to bid for these jobs would be British, German, and Dutch, and rates were based on mobilization of tugboats from ports far away (Hawaii, Singapore, Cape Town etc). These contracts therefore offered interesting profit potentials for Norwegian ship-owners. However, the problem was that at the time there were not enough Norwegianowned ships around to be able to tackle such towing jobs. Together with Farstad, Viking and Eidesvik, Solstad therefore partnered up in forming Nortow, where the companies, normally competitors, joined forces in taking on major and heavy towing assignments. The partnership turned out both efficient and competitive, which led to the foreign players quickly becoming outdistanced.

Overpraised? For a man used to busy days and many ongoing projects, becoming a pensioner was quite a transition. Knut Lussand stood the ground until he was 70, but in January this year, he finally enrolled in the pensioner club. These days he commutes between his Skudeneshavn home and his cabins in Hardanger and the south coast, trying to balance his time between family, practical jobs and hunting. Still, things are a bit too quiet for his taste. –I have to say I find retirement rather overpraised, Lussand says, and it seems that he really appreciates calling at Solstad’s Skudeneshavn office this December day. Judging from all the nice greetings extended to him while we made the interview, it is something he should do more often!

På samlingene står det sosiale i fokus, men det er også invitert kåsører, og ellers er det som regel en orientering fra rederiets ledelse om aktuelle nyheter. Først av alt er det uansett den uformelle praten som verdsettes av deltakerne. -Vi er veldig glade for den ordningen som Solstad har for pensjonistene sine, forteller Christian Næss. Han er mangeårig leder for foreningen, og er bindeleddet mellom medlemmene og rederiet. Hovedandelen av deltakerne kommer fra området på Haugalandet og Rogaland, men det er også lagt opp til at medlemmer fra andre steder i landet får besøke samlingene. -Rederiet dekker én reise pr år for de som tilreisende utenom nærområdet, forteller Heine F. Birkeland, som koordinerer rederiets pensjonistsamlinger sammen med Næss. Nedbemanningen i rederiet fører nå til at det blir en kraftig økning i antall medlemmer i pensjonistforeningen, ettersom mange av de

Staff reduction in the company is now resulting in a sharp increase in the number of members of the pensioner association, as many of those who chose to accept the “redundancy package”, belong to the age group comprised by the scheme. “In fact, some were able to retire much earlier than they had envisaged,” says Birkeland, “but at the same time the company hopes that the pensioners’ club will help to continue their affiliation to the company.” Although the gatherings will continue as before in 2016, a small reduction in the number of gatherings will be made. This will be done partly to simplify administration, but also to concentrate the number of participants in fewer gatherings.

Nytt fra Velferdsklubben News from the Welfare Club Velferdsklubben i Solstad har i mange år hatt en jevn vekst både i antall medlemmer og antall hytter. Klubben har fortsatt høy aktivitet og god etterspørsel for hyttene sine, men reduksjon i rederiets bemanning skaper også behov for endringer i Velferdens tilbud. -De siste årene har vi hatt en jevn vekst både i antall medlemmer, antall hytter og antall overnattinger på hyttene våre, forteller Heine F. Birkeland. Nå er imidlertid trenden snudd, og reduksjonen i antall ansatte gir også reduksjon i antall medlemmer i Velferden. Som et resultat av dette, ble det tatt en gjennomgang av belegg og utvikling på hyttene, og i den forbindelse var det Justøya som kom dårligst ut. Hytten ble derfor sagt opp fra og med desember i år. En endring for neste år, er at fristene er endret fra 3 trekninger (for Spania-hyttene) til en

Når noe er for godt til å være sant, er det bare å slå til! Slik kommenterte Velferdens styreleder, Trond Nilsen meldingen om at Velferden (1. april) hadde kjøpt en villa i Nigeria. Saken var godt utredet på intranett, men mange ante nok ugler i mosen. Det var da også en aprilspøk. Likevel dukket det opp henvendelser både fra enkeltpersoner og grupper av ansatte som hadde ulike ønsker og meninger om dette nye hyttetilbudet. Tiden vil vise om det kommer nye utvidelser, men i denne omgang var det altså en aprilspøk!

The whole thing was written with a certain amount of irony, and therefore most people un-

derstood that this was an April fool’s joke, but still the club also received several inuiereies for the new cabin. Time will show if the number of cabins will be expanded, but for now it was all a joke!


Velferdstur i Singapore Welfare trip to Singapore Siden 2013, har alle medlemmer av Velferdsklubben i Norge hatt mulighet til å søke Velferdsfondet om støtte til ulike aktiviteter. Kriteriene for tildeling av midler er at aktiviteten skal ha en lagbyggende karakter, og at det er laget et budsjett for søknaden som også inkluderer egeninnsats fra deltakerne. Så langt har midlene stort sett blitt brukt til utflukter, og det er et sosialt og hyggelig tiltak som vi registrerer mange gode tilbakemeldinger på. Mannskapet på Normand Baltic, var blant årets søkere til Velferdsfondet, og benyttet midlene til å ta en utflukt mens de lå i Singapore. Kriterier for tildelinger fra Velferdsfondet, samt søknadsskjema finnes på Velferdens sider på intranett.

Since 2013, all Welfare Club members in Norway have had the chance to request funding of various activities from the Welfare Fund. The criteria for the allocation of funds are: the activity must have a team-building character, and a budget including own efforts on the part of participants must be presented. So far funds have been mostly used for excursions, and we have received a large amount of positive feedback on this social and enjoyable initiative. Normand Baltic’s crew was among those who applied for Welfare Fund funding this year. They used the donation for an excursion while docked in Singapore. The criteria for receiving an allocation from the Welfare Fund as well as application forms are available on Welfare’s Intranet pages.

Aktivitetskampanjer Activity campaigns Velferden har i år avholdt aktivitetskampanjer for sine medlemmer.

Kravene for deltagelse har vært ganske frie, men man har måttet dokumentere aktiviteter på minimum 30 minutter. Alle aktiviteter har blitt logget i trenings-appen Endomondo, og kunne legges inn både via telefon og web. Deltakerne registerte aktiviteter som sykling, svømming, fot-turer, vekt-trening osv og kriteriene har vært delt i to kategorier. Den ene har gått på å se hvem som har gjennomført flest mulig treningsøkter i løpet av perioden, og her ble det premiering til de 3 beste (med flest godkjente treninger). Den andre har gått på å gjennomføre 25-30 aktivitetsøkter i den perioden hvor kampanjen varte. Her ble vinnere trukket blant alle deltakere. Det ble mange gjengangere i «Topp-10» oversikten, og den som vel må kåres som rederiets sprekeste ansatte er Reidar Jakobsen, som har vunnet alle de tre aktivitetskampanjene – med god margin! Oppslutningen har ellers variert, og det var flere påmeldte på de to første kampanjene i forhold til den tredje. Det er mulig antallet kampanjer eller oppsettet for disse vil justeres i 2016.

This year, the Welfare Club has held activity campaigns for its members. Requirements for participation have been quite loose, but activities lasting at least 30 minutes had to be documented. Selv om det er tøffe tider i offshorebransjen, har Solstad Offshore besluttet å opprettholde tradisjonen med juledonasjoner til veldedige formål. Målet med disse gavene er å bidra til organisasjoner som driver veldedig eller samfunnsnyttig arbeid i de landene eller regionene som rederiets skip opererer. Kandidatene ble tidligere stemt frem av rederiets egne ansatte, og varierer fra mindre organisasjoner som drives av ildsjeler, til store nasjonale og internasjonale aktører. Felles for dem alle, er at de bidrar med tjenester og tilbud som passer med rederiets verdier, og ellers har oppslutning blant rederiets ansatte. Donasjoner til veldedige formål som erstatning for ordinære julegaver, ble innført i 2013. Dette ble gjort som respons på at rederiets ansatte var spredt over stadig større geografiske områder, og det ble stadig mer vanskelig (og ressurskrevende) å sørge for at alle fikk like gaver – til samme tid. Det ble derfor besluttet å skifte fokus, og rederiets ansatte ble invitert til å nominere kandidater i de regionene de var lokalisert. Ved å gi gaver til veldedige formål på denne måten, bidrar man positivt i alle regioner hvor rederiet er representert, samtidig som man får markert en felles

og samfunnsnyttig handling i forbindelse med julehøytiden. Det er noe som mange ansatte har gitt positive tilbakemeldinger på. Beløpene som doneres i år er noe redusert i forhold til foregående år, men er likevel på nivå med det rederiet ellers ville brukt på julegaver.

Though times are tough in the offshore industry, Solstad Offshore has decided to keep its tradition of donating Christmas gifts to charity. The goal of the gifts is to help organizations engaged in charity or socially useful work in the countries or regions in which the shipping companies’ vessel operate. The candidates were previously elected by the company’s own employees, and vary from smaller organizations run by enthusiasts to large national and international players. All of them contribute with services and offers which reflect the company’s values, and are supported by the employees. 'Charitable donations as a substitute for ordinary Christmas gifts were introduced in 2013. The measure was made as a response to the company’s employees being scattered across ever larger geographical areas, and it became

increasingly difficult (and costly) to make sure that all of them received the same gifts simultaneously. It was therefore decided to shift focus, and the employees were invited to nominate candidates in the regions they were located. By donating gifts to charity in this manner, we make a positive contribution in all the regions where the company is represented, at the same time as we introduce a joint and socially beneficial action related to the Christmas season. This is something many employees appreciate. The amounts donated this year are somewhat reduced compared to last year, but are still in line what the company otherwise would have spent on Christmas gifts.

Naval Forces, kan best beskrives som en versjon av det vi i Norge kaller sivilforsvaret, men samtidig har denne organisasjonen en videre funksjon enn det vi er vant med fra norske forhold. I Norge rykker sivilforsvaret ut for å bistå i ulike krisesituasjoner, og har en generell beredskapsfunksjon i samfunnet. Det har man også på Fillipnene, men her har også Naval Forces en samfunnsnyttig funksjon utover det rent akutte. De involverte bistår med ulike former for hjelpearbeid i lokale områder hvor det er fattigdom og nød. Solstads leder for Manila-kontoret, Rolando Adorable, har i mange år vært aktiv i Naval Forces, og har en høy grad i denne organisasjonen. Adorable var da også initiativtaker til forespørselen om bidrag fra hovedkontoret i Norge, og har gjennom sitt arbeid i Solstad også benyttet sin bakgrunn fra Naval Forces til å gjøre samfunnsnyttig arbeid lokalt i Manila. Dette blir høyt verdsatt, og har også ført til at flere av de ansatte ved Manila-kontoret bidrar til arbeidet. Innsatsen fra Naval Forces eget personell, og de Solstad-ansattes frivillige dugnadsinnsats, har på denne måten ført til at midlene fra Solstad Offshore har blitt svært effektivt utnyttet. Et av områdene som ble hjulpet gjennom fjorårets julegaver, var bydelen Mapulang, Valenzula - et stykke nord for Manila. Her bidro Naval Forces blant annet med ulike vaksiner og medisinsk bistand.

Several of the employees at the Solstad office in Manila, have volunteered to help the Naval Forces in addition to the Christmas donations from Solstad Offshore.

In recent years one of the projects to receive funding in connection with Solstad Offshore’s Christmas gifts donations is run by Naval Forces Reserve on the Philippines. Naval Forces can best be described as a version of what we in Norway call the civil defense, but at the same time this organization has an additional function compared to what we are used to in Norway. In Norway the civil defense is called out to assist in various crises, and has a general emergency function in society. That is also the case on the Philippines, but Naval Forces also have a social function beyond emergency situations. The parties involved assist in providing various forms of aid work in local areas ridden by poverty and need.

Solstad’s manager of the Manila office, Rolando Adorable, has for many years been an active member of Naval Forces and holds a high rank in the organization. Adorable was also the initiator of the main office’s request for funding, and has through his work in Solstad used his background in Naval Forces to perform social work locally in Manila. This is highly appreciated, and has resulted in the involvement of several employees of the Manila office in this work. The efforts of Naval Forces’ staff and the voluntary work of Solstad employees have in this way resulted in a very efficient utilization of the Solstad Offshore funds. One of the areas receiving aid in the form of last year’s Christmas gifts was the neighborhood Mapulang, Valenzula, located a bit north of Manila. Naval Forces provided various vaccines and medical aid among others.

Takk for meg! Cheerio! Kjære alle lesere, Det har vært veldig spesielt å jobbe med Solships denne gang. Siden jeg begynte i Solstad i 2005, har jo pilene stort sett bare pekt oppover, og det har vært en voldsom ekspansjon både i bransjen og for rederiet. I fjor feiret vi 50-års jubileum med gode forventninger til neste fase av rederiets utvikling. Men så kom væromslaget. Først som en kjølig høstvind, men etter hvert som en sjelden kald vinterstorm. Det var på tide å skalke lukene. De siste månedene har kontoret i Skudeneshavn derfor vært preget av pågående sparetiltak og nedbemanninger. Flåtens aktiviteter ble gradvis redusert, og en rekke skip ble tatt ut av opera-

Dear readers, It has been a very special experience to work with Solships during this period. Since I joined Solstad in 2005, all the charts have indicated upward directions, and both the shipping industry and the company have been constantly expanding. Last year we celebrated our 50th anniversary with good expectations of the next phase of the company’s development. But then the weather has changed. First came what initially felt like a cool autumn breeze, but gradually more like a rare, fierce winter storm. Time to batten down the hatches. In the past months, the office at Skudeneshavn has borne the weight of ongoing austerity measures and downsizing. Fleet activity was gradually

Fra nyttår skal jeg over til IT-firmaet Sysco, hvor Solstad blir en av mange kunder jeg nå skal jobbe med. Jeg vil derfor benytte anledningen til å takke både nåværende og tidligere kolleger for godt samarbeid i disse årene jeg har vært i Solstad. Det har vært en fornøyelse å bli kjent med dere, og jeg ser frem til å følge rederiets aktiviteter vi-
