HONOURS-CONCEPTS inspiration for editorial For the first part of my concepts I started to look back at my research for inspiration on what my editorial would look like. These examples are the ones that I liked the most and thought suited my brand the most. I will take inspiration from these ideas when creating my cover of my editorial and the inside pages.
name of my editorial and list of principles?
BIG title atthe top of the front of the magazinewill probably be doing this with my work.
found this layout really effective and clean, which is what i want to go for.
Really like the thin text with image and shapes aroundthe central image could be of a pattern I create.
Alot of magazines have a title that goes across the full pageeffective, I will use this as inspiration.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles
Concepts- balance I have started off my concepts by concepting the main patterns that I want to use for my editorial. From my proposal presentation I was given the feedback that I should create the visual explinations of the principles and put them into context, whether that be posters or book covers, so I am concepting different patterns for the different principles that explain what theyre all about directly that I can include within my editorial followed by a proper explination of each principle- this will be effective because it will give the audience a visual insight into what each principle is about and how it works with one simplistic image. I wanted to go for simplistic black and white images because they are simple, clear, and strike easier to the audience and will enable me to create content that follows the fact I want to be a graphic designer. Once I have concepted and developed my pattern ideas, I can then use them within my editorial to seperate the principlew within it, to act as separators so they know when a new principle is being introduced. I can also use them as the large prints I wanted to produce because of how simple and striking theyre going to be, will leave the audience wondering what they are, then when they read the editorial they will understand. Ive chosen white on black because I’ve found its the most striking use of colour contrast and will really grab the audiences attention when theyre viewing the patterns, it also makes them clear and effective visually.
Idea behind this concept- the line striking through the circle is where the circle is balanced, each side of that line is exactly the same and therefore shows balance in a simplistic way.
This idea was that the composition was split into a balanced two and the two sides had the exact same thing on them.
To be critical, im not as fond of this idea as I am the rest, simply because its too complex, your eye wouldnt really know where to settle within the pattern so I dont think I will develop this one because of the lack of effectiveness it would have I’ve found that my balance concepts are very much based on the research i’ve on my audience. done on the balance principle, its about a composition having the same amount of weight on each side of it and not feeling too heavy whether it be symmetrical or asymmetrical. This is why these patterns are the way they are. All of these concepts for the patterns are all based off of the idea of dots, lines and planes from my research also, they all are made from them three shapes and created to represent each principle as a graphic, visual piece that will go along side an article within my editorial to effectively show the principles as a fun, visual way of explaining them to the audience.

Concepts Balance
When researching, i look at non conventional ways of explaining balance with visuals. I came across the yin and yang symbol, although this is effective piece of imagary, to be critical, it is already a symbol and I wanted to create new, simplistic symbols that I could use for this project, so this wasnt effective enough.
I started to draw loose lines for balance, this specific idea is based off of yin and yang, but in its simplist form of a ‘s’ shaped line with two dots within the middle. This reference is really good to look at and develop my idea from as its inspiring me on what balance can be represented like within a visual piece.

Concepts Balance Celtic knots- very balanced- each element interlocks. They are all symmetrical as well- could be a good example.
Symmetrical composition- effective- reflect eachother to show balance within a composition.
This concept is based off of the idea of the celtic knot, that the pattern balances itself out. I do like this idea, but it may be a bit too complicated for the type of patterns im trying to go with for my project- i will definatly develop the lines though because the way as it gets smaller and thinner the lines balance eachother out is effective.
This idea is based off of lines, two circles coming together that are made of lines and creating this bold, filled in shape that is also a balanced shape- This pattern is really effective and simplistic- this concept has been brought about by the idea of lines and planes from my research, its really interesting and represents the principle effectively.
From my research I remembered I was looking at balance and the meaning behind the principle and I came across celtic knots. Celtic knots were known for being very balanced as each knot held the next one together. I thought Id go back to my research and reference this and create some concepts from it. This original idea was really effective to go off of because I was able to look into patterns that already exist that are balanced. Because I want my visuals to be simplistic and effective, looking at this research really helped me to develop my concepts even further.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles
Concepts Balance
This idea is based off of the lines balancing themselves out and each corner of the square being balanced and having the same amount of elements as each side. This idea is effective because its based off of lines and represents balance principle effectively because its all balanced like jenga. This idea is based off of how jenga balances itself effectively within a design.
This wouldn’t really suit balancemaybe rythmn? may use it for a different principle. I came up with this idea, but it doesnt really suit balance, I was trying to go for the idea of everything having the same amount of aspects on each side but it looks more like something that could represent rhythm as a principle.
I have developed this balance concept because it didnt look right as just four sqaures, so i duplicated them all and created this more complex shape that has alot of balancing elements within it. I think this idea is the most effective because its simple and clearly shows balance as a principle because of the elements balancing on top of eachother. I think I will definatly take this idea into my developments as my balance pattern because of how effective and simplistic it looks and is and its based off of lines as well which goes along with my brand for this project.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles
Concepts
From my research I found there are a couple of types of proportion, rule of thirds, golden ratio etc. The research has really helped me to understand proportion and therefore create these simplistic patterns that effectively communicate proportion as a principle.
Proportion
This shape is based off of the shape of the golden ratio. This golden ratio is based off of maths. The idea of this is that if your composition follows this golden ratio then it will be perfectly put together and composed, this will be an effetive principle for my audience to have knowledge of, so first I thought I would create a design that is based off of that.
After the golden ratio design, i started thinking about repeating elements, and that the golden ratio is just repeating elements that look effective. So I went into illustrator and used the transform tool to create these circles that seem to go on forever getting smaller and smaller, just like the golden ratio. This design is a really good starting point for my proportion concepts and i will be working ontop of this overall idea of repeating elements.
Next im moving onto concepting proportion. When I was researching proportion I found it was all about things creating harmony within a composition, the aspects of a composition being equal to what they would be in real life and the composition laying where the eye would most likley be drawn to within a composition, therefore making it more effective overall.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles
Concepts Proportion
Concept is based off of dots and the golden ratio, the golden ratio appears in nature as well as design in such things as shells you find on the beach with the continous swirl in the middle- this idea is based off of that, obviously in developments the dots would be more circular, but i thought the overall idea was effective because it represented that part of proportion and the golden ratio. This simple concept is based off of the rule of thirds, which from my research ive found is when you split your composition into thirds and put a focal point on where the lines meet eachother, it creates a really aesthetically pleasing layout for the audience to see. This was based on that ideaI think i do need to develop it because its only a concept but the underlying idea of it is effective and uses dots and lines which is what im aiming for in my ideas.
The idea of this pattern is the continous spiral that is based off of the golden ratio. This pattern idea is effective because of how simple it is and the fact that it is made up of lines and dots, which goes with my idea for this project. I want my patterns to be made up of dots, lines and planes because my whole research and idea behind this project is that these simple shapes will represent the basic principles of design through visuals and some explination within my editorial, so to create patterns that will represent each principle is really effective for my project overall. This idea is based off of triangles all fitting together and proportion within plants- because ive seen a plant that looks similar to this so it was created to be that plant in simple lineslooks effective for proportion because of the swirl within the pattern.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles
Concepts Proportion
From my reserach on proportion i also came across the information that proportion can refer to the human body and the proportions when illustrating the human body. The human body should be 6 heads tall when talking about proportion- so I was going to create this pattern that was 6 ‘dots’ or cirlces, that sat on top of eachother to represent proportion within the human bodyThis pattern was an experimentation within dots lines and planes and how I could communicate proportion through them. This is based off of the swirl you find within the golden ratio, with dots that follow the swirl also, all within a circle to show the wholeness of proportionthis would need developing but is an effective piece overall.
With this concept I was just experimenting with the shapes that i could potentially use for my project and how they could interact with eachother.
This piece is based off of how the golden ratio works within maths, it gets smaller and smaller as the shapes get closer to the epi-centre of the ratio- this is to represent the first couple of shapes within that- I thought this concept i created was simple and effective and represented proportion effectively, but may be slightly confusing so I will have to develop this idea overall.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles - proportion
This concept was a mixture between golden ratio and the rule of thirds- it would be based around lines and one dot that would be the focal point. This idea will need fixing within my developments to make it look cleaner.
Idea is based off of the golden ratio being the same pattern repeated to create a effective pattern.
Concept is more of a simplistic version of the one on the right, uses reoccuring circles that represent the golden ratio- simplistic pattern that would really represent this principle, but needs something else too it because its too simple.
These concepts are representing proportion principle. These are ideas that I came up with from experimenting with the transform tool within illustrator. The transform tool duplicates the shape you make and can move it in different directions to create patterns. All of these concepts are based off of my original idea of dots, lines and planes. They are my experiments that I am going to take into my developments to create effective pieces of work.
This pattern was really effective and i know i definatly want to use this within my developments as the proportion pattern because it clearly shows proportion using continous lines that repeat and get smaller exactly like the golden ratio, it also looks like the pattern that appears in nature within shells that represents the golden ratio, this pattern would be perfect in representing this and being a clear, simplistic pattern based off of lines.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles Contrast From my research I found that contrast was about two elements that are complete opposites within a composition that make the elements stick out alot, this is what I concentrated on when creating my concepts for this pattern principle. This concept was based around the moon eclipse. These shapes are based on dots and lines and represent the light and dark that the moon makes when its in eclipse and the moon cycleThis simple graphic is effective because it represents contrast from the black and white, it also shows white space as the circle is made from the white shaping it around itsimple black and white imagary that could represent contrast.
This idea I went for the simple black and white contrasting ‘dots’- very bold imagary and would get the point across of communicating contrast.
Here I was experimenting with colour as from my research i found contrasting colour is one of the massive ways of showing contrastred and white with a line in the middle.
This idea was based off of lines, going through the circles to show the contrasting colours that appear within it. To be critical, this idea isnt as hard hitting as I would like it to be, I would have to develop it alot to be effective enough for my final outcome of this project to represent contrast.
overall... liked: simple contrasting black and white didnt like: complicated shapes that didnt communicate well enough.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles
pattern was more interesting then what id previously came up with- lines and block of colour represent contrast whilst so does the black and white- this would go in the middle of a black page, although the black square wouldnt show up so it would just be contrasting lines- still effective.
Contrast
experimenting with shapes that are contrasting colours- dont like the outline, but shapes could be a potential for developments.
This idea began as contrast, but then I realised it represented hierarchy more as it shows the difference in shape size, which represents their importance because of their size. --could be effective as a hierarchy visual image but not contrast- doesnt make sense for contrast.
Contrast is about opposing elements in a design that stand out to make the composition more vibrant and have more movement. To communicate this to my audience I need to pick one of these concepts that has the potential to represent that as simply as I can.
experimenting with shapes here, then having one black square in the middle of the composition is suppose to represent the contrast within the compositionthe shape isnt strong enough though it would have to develop into a square etc.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles
Contrast
contrast- lines go different directions to show the contrast. i was trying to show contrast within these shapes by showing size contrast but I ended up thinking that this idea would be more suited to hierarchy again. This would be effective for hierarchy because it shows the importance of the bigger shape versus the little one within the composition.
Contrast through different shapes- the contrast is shown through how different the shapes are within this composition, this is effective although the shapes should probably be recognisable as to not confuse the audience such as a circle and a square. This idea could be effective but I would need to develop it to create something that communicated better- also needs to be based off of dots, lines and planes.
Different directions of aspects show contrast in design.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles
Contrast
This idea, again shows more hierarchy than contrast. The hierarchy is shown through the bigger shapes seeming more prominant than the little ones, therefore showing that theyre more important in the hierarchy scalesimple yet effective way of showing this principle.
Really like this i way of representing contrast- it shows the slow contrast of colours within a gradient. Uses two colours that are complete opposites also so they stand out really well. Really want to develop this to look more interesting than just flat colour-
Created these two concepts using half tones. This design is perfect to represent contrast because of the two completly opposite colours along with the dots that perfectly represent the brand im going for within my project- effective overall. I could develop these into better shapes, something more stable like a square or a circle. This really represents contrast effectively because it shows two colours that are completely different and in dots.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles Colour theory
Different colours when actually make it
two opposing colour blocks as lines- to represent what colour theory is about- using the colours that go together within designs effectively.
Idea- lines that are each different colour that are on the colour wheeleffective and simple.
dots that are the different colours of the colour wheel- simple, may not be effective as a colour wheel though.
simple idea of just using lines to create the colour wheel with each colour inside each segment- simple and effective.
Colour theory is a wide subject that has alot of different aspects to it. To create these concepts I used my knowledge and the knowledge from my reserach to create them. Colour theory is about contrasting colours and colours that bring about emotion within the audience. I think to represent colour theory within an image I will need to create something that includes all the colours....maybe the colour wheel? as this is what colour theory is represented by.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles Colour theory
Swirl that blends into all of the colours using lines- effective and simple and represents the colour wheel. This would communicate colour theory and represent it for the article of colour theory within my editorial effectively.
I have started to experiment with gradiants within these two pieces- this piece is representing the duplicating colour wheel. I dont think i’ll use this concept to be critical because it looks too much like a rainbow and doesnt really represent colour theory as professionally as I would like it to.
This is what the dots would look like with all the different colours of the colour wheel on it- I think this idea is too complex and not straight to the point enough, colour theory needs to be simplified a bit because of all the elements of the colours.
This idea shows the colours from colour theory but is in a triangle, I was experimenting with this idea to see if I could use a gradient to represent the colours- this doesnt look as effective as I thought it wouldneed to develop this idea of all the colours blending into a shape.
Colour theory is hard to represent with a simplistic shape because of how complex the actual theory is, for every other principle I can create a simplistic visual shape using dots, lines and planes that represents what the principle stands for and is used for, but with colour theory its hard to because the only real thing I can represnt it with is the colour wheel, i am going to try and create a visual using the colour wheel that represents colour theory effectively overall.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles Colour theory
Dots with each colour in them that is in the colour wheeleffective because it actually represents the colour wheel, but it needs to be more open as the colours are over eachother too much within this composition.
Triangles look effective and have all of the colours embedded, but the overall pattern is too complex for the type im going for within my project- i need to try and develop the above ideas that are more simple and get straight to the point whilst being nice pieces of design.
These colour theory concepts have helped me to experiment and understand that I need to develop my idea for colour theory so its more circular and includes all the colours from the colour wheel, and the simplier the shape within the composition, the better it will communicate with the audience- so in my developments I will need to take this into consideration and create something that is effective, simple and circular to represent the colour wheel for this particular principle.
In this development concept I have tried to spread the colours out more to represent more of a wheel, this looks way better than the colours all merged together, need to do more of this. The colours are all within dots which stays with my brand and is effective because of the simplicity.
Fix overall shape...
could use this more interesting shape- maybe not with triangles, doesnt look as effective as with circles.

Concepts Alignment Alignment is all about elements within a design being lined up together. This is alot of the time used in conjuction with a grid. This principle is important because from my research, i found that it makes a composition look more professional and well put together, so this pattern that I create obviously has to look well put together and professional.
I thought about the simple approach, with two lines that were the same size that are bold within a composition- this could be effective because of how bold and blatent this is-
This concept was based off of the first two but with developed lines, theres more than just two- it would be a whole line of them to show each aspect is lined up effectively- could move some of them so theyre only lined up on one side to show the different ways you can align aspects to the audience. Alignment concepts- these were effective to do because im able to see where i should develop and how I should develop within my concepts overall to create effective piece of simple pattern work that represents the principle.
This idea is basically the same as the first, with horizonal lines that lined up to represent the simple principle of alignment-effective, simple, would get the message across.
This alignment idea was based off of two of the aspects of the composition lining up with eachother in an unconventional way rather than just lines- because within a composition you can have alignment with aspects that arent completely lined up but one corner of them does-which makes the composition look neater. This idea is effective because it would be two bold shapes that perfectly lined up to represent the principle.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles
Concepts Alignment
Alignment is shown here with the flat planes (shapes) all being different sizes but aligning to eachother, this is effective because from my research i looked at alot of ideas surrounding alignment and what it entails and that really helped me to understand that alignment can be more than just some lines that are the same size and lined up exactly the same- this shape would be simple and effective to use as the pattern to represent alignment because it shows the different ways that you can use it to create a composition that feels whole and complete. Two planes that line up, simple effective imagary for alignment that would represent them effectively overall.
This concept is similar to the previous one, two ‘planes’ that line up central aligned within the composition, this is a simple pattern, which is exactly what i want.
This idea isnt really effective enough and the audience would get confused about how it relates to alignment because it doesnt really show that as a principle.
Alignment is an important principle and needs to be represented effectively through these patterns I create, I think the simplier the pattern the more impact it will have on the audience and therefore the more effective it will be overall. I will develop these ideas to come up with an alignment piece that will really represent what alignment is about- favourite so far is lines that line up with ones that could slightly come out that could represent the different ways you can align pieces.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles Alignment
Two boxes that align with lines- effective but will need developing.
This idea was influenced by my research on aspects of compositons that can be aligned but different lengths- this would be represented by different length lines that all line up at the top point to represent alignment and what its all about and the fact that the aspects can align at one part and it makes them look neat and professional.
My favourite alignment concept has been the last two ive created because of the simplisity of the lines ive created that all represent alignment effectively and simply, and you would get which principle it could be straight away, also using black and white. These ideas can now be developed in my developments.
In this idea I have created lines that line up, then in the middle the ones that line up create a shape- this is a good concept because it shows that alignment can create other aspects within them to make a composition look effective overall.
Took inspiration from John lewis for this idea- alignment with different widths of shapes, to show the different aspects you can line up, it also represents alignment effectively using planes and lines which follow the brand im going for.
John lewis branding inspiration.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles
Concepts - repetition Repetition is all about repeating an aspect throughout your project/brand/editorial so that the audience can relate in their head all the content, for example coke using red and white swirled writing throughout their branding, so if you see a red can you automatically assume its coke, brand recognition. So this is because of repetition, so to represent it I thought id create a pattern that was simple and repeated itself which would be the most simple and hard hitting way of representing this. First two concepts are lines that repeat throughout the composition to represent it. This is simple and I think i should develop this before settling because its very simple and this can be more visually enticing.
Simple circles that repeatrepetition in its simplist form using dots to represent itmaybe too many dots...need to develop this.
This idea was based off of 3D and repeating lines that make them look like they have movement. This makes the pattern come to life more rather than just be 2D, although this may be a bit complicated for the type of patterns im trying to go for.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles
Concepts - repetition repeating elements that form a whole when they join- could represent the whole idea behind repetition.
All these concepts are based off of repeating patterns to try and represent repetition- they use lines to try and represent how repetition can work- using the same aspect throughout your work.
These lines are effectivegives the composition movement- need to develop this.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles
Concepts - repetition
repetition of circles- to represent the repetition of aspects that is the principle- this is a simple effective pattern that I could use.
This pattern includes repetition of the lines then they suddenly stop to create this flat plane diamond shape. This is effective in showing repetition because it shows how repeating elements can create this illusion that everything is connected and whole within the composition.
This pattern is really effective because of its use of squares that are equal lengths apart that repeat and form an illusion that there are circles in the middle of them- shows how repeating something can create a stronger outcome in a sqaure, which in my research says its a dominant shape.
Repeating a square creates a sense of depth within this pattern. All of them lead to the focal point of the squares- effective.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles
Concepts - direction
This concept is a triangle with lines going in different directions within it- to represent the different ways that direction can go within a composition- effective.
Three triangles that are going the same way but different sizes to represent the different aspects that go into a composition and how the different sizes can direct you around a compositioneffective and simple way of showing this principle.
Lines that join up to eachother creating a sort of path pattern throughout the compositon, this is effective in representing direction because it shows how the direction of a composition leads you throughout a piece of design work to take in all of the information.
These are lines that join together to create another shape within the middle to show that direction can lead you to a focal point that you wouldnt have seen without the direction or you wouldve went to straight away without seeing the other parts of the composition- simple way of using lines to create a pattern that is effective.
The concept of direction, which is closely aligned with movement. Elements in the page design intentionally guide the viewers' eyes from one area of the page to another. Direction is used to move the audiences eye to the place that you want it to go, much like hierarchy, from my research i found this, so within these patterns I should create something that moves your eye along the composition of the pattern using dots, lines and planes. Lines will probably be the most effective way of doing this.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles
Concepts - direction This design shows direction by looking like it actually could spin and the lines all point in different directions to create this star looking shape that is the overall design, all comes together- direction.
lines all point to one common focal point of the triangle. Although to be critical it is very unbalanced design and would need developing.
These lines for direction are effective because not only do they create arrows that point in one direction but theyre also different sizes which represents different aspects of the designs that all go in one direction to a common cause within the design to point to a focal point and guide the viewers eyereally effective simplistic design that uses lines.
This quick sketch is ‘planes’ all pointing in different directions to create an overall shape. This represents how direction leads the eye to a focal point, he same way this shape leads the eye to look at the biger picture, which is a shape.

When you repeat elements, the intervals between those repetitions can create a sense of rhythm in the viewer and a sense of movement. Musicians create rhythm in the spacing between notes, effectively making these “silent gaps play off the notes. Designers insert spacing between elements to make rhythm. Rhythm is a difficult one to represent through patterns and lines, but I am trying through my patterns on this concept page.
Rhythm using two repeating patterns that go across the page using lines.
This idea is that rhythm is some lines that get smaller as they get further away, but they are still the same size its just perspective. This rhythm means that the same line repeats forever, which represents the rhythm of the aspects of the design
This design represents waves of rhythm, as in music etc represented by lines swirling together- this concept is effective in representing rhythm because it shows what rhythm can potentially be in design, it is used to guide the audience through the design, just like you follow each line on these designs to the centre.

This concept design is based off of radio waves, this reminded me of rhythm because rhythm as a principle is something that represents your audience bouncing off of all the repetition within designs that bring them together and make them appear whole, which reminded me of waves of similar design that repeat forever, which is why I think this depiction of rhythm is effective and accurate for this and I will definatly be developing this idea within my developments to make it go further.
This rhythm depiction is similar to one I have done before- created to show how rhythm can be two lines intertwining eachother to create a rhythm in shape, which represents how rhythm is the aspects of a design coming together and moving your audience along a design.
This concept doesnt really represent rhythm as well as I thought it would in my head, but it is an effective piece of design that uses line and could use used for something else like direction etc.
I came up with this concept based off of lines and real rhythm within music like in a speaker. I thought this design was effective and represents it well because it shows the lines pushing together to go towards an epi centre and disipating as they go towards the sideseffective use of rhythm and representation.

Concepts H I E R A R C HY
This concept is more simplistic, two triangles, one is big and one is small, but the small one is shaded in so it makes you question the hierarchy and also represents how hierarchy can also be within colour, shape, and form of aspects.
Hierarchy represented through ‘dots’, three circles in a line that keep getting bigger to represent how hierarchy is shown through elements being more important than one another within a composition.
This concept is simple and just represents hierarchy in its simpliest form, which can be the most effective pieces when theyre this simple, two ‘planes’ one bigger than the other, facing eachother asymmetrically.
This concept uses the hierarchy triangle as reference as it shows the three aspects getting bigger to represent hierarchy as a principle. Overall, this is a very effective way of representing hierarchy and is simple and follows my brand of dots, lines and planes and black and white, so I could develop this within my developments for this project.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS concepts for patterns of in situ principles
Concepts H I E R A R C HY
When researching hierarchy I came across the hierarchy triangle that most people think of when they think of hierarchy, it is split up into about 5 or 6 segments and represents hierarchy, whatever is at the top of the triangle is the top of the hierarchy and so forth. This second idea represents this in its simpliest form, althought I think i want to develop it because it doesnt look effective enough like this.
Here I have created a concept for hierarchy that represents colour hierarchy using dots, one of the dots is shaded in white, which automatically makes your brain go straight to it, which makes it at the top of the hierarchy for this composition, and the un shaded circles are second thoughts.
3D triangle could try...
3D triangle turned into a 3D pyramid that could represent hierarchy as a principle using the original hierarchy triangle that I discovered within my research. Overall, this would be a really effective and simplistic way of representing hierarchy as a principle using lines and planes to construct it as a shape.

Concepts H I E R A R C HY
I wanted to experiment with my concepts more for the patterns for my principles so I decided to go for this type of composition to represent hierarchy, a big cut off circle in the top left and a smaller one in the bottom right to represent contrasting hierarchys because you would automatically think that the bigger circle is more important overall.
I came up with another simplistic idea that represents hierarchy, 3 ‘dots’ that show that you would go straight to the biggest dot as the most important hierarchy then down to the middle then the smallest, just like you would go to the biggest piece of typography then the smallest within a composition because thats the hierachy the designer is trying to get you to read in a certain order of importance.
hierachy represented in line within this composition- bigger the line the higher hierarchy it has- this is effective because it uses the lines that i want throughout my project and it would explain to the audience effectively what hierarchy is in a simple pattern or at least what it could potentially look like within a composition that you create as a design. this is another colour hierarchy concept, where you would go to the lighter colour first because it stands out more and therefore you would think it had more hierarchy within the compositionseffective use of ‘planes’ and a simple idea that would be effective in showing the audience what hierarchy is.

UNITY
This first idea is the first one that came to me, a simple circle, that represents wholeness and completeness of a composition that has applied the unity principleeffective, simplistic and uses a big dot.
This idea is a simple line, to be critical though, unity is about being complete and a line doesnt really shout complete to me because a line can go on forever so I may not this idea within my developments.
Unity is about creating a wholeness within a composition, using all of the principles and the design feeling complete to the audience. This idea of completeness as a principle gave me an idea straight away on what I could create with dots, lines and planes to represent this principle within a pattern.
This idea, similar to the first, a square that is by itself and unified. Although, this isnt as effective as the circle because its has edges it makes it seem less whole, but is still effective.
This idea is based off of the fact that unity is about everything within a composition coming together and working in complete harmony, is two lines interlocked like an eternity sign, this is simplistic and effective for the pattern to represent unity.

UNITY
This idea for unity was similar to an idea I came up with for repetition. To be critical, i dont think this idea really represents unity as well as other ones, but it does show that aspects can all come together to create a whole shape (rectangle) and that could represent unity.
Unity is represented here through lines fitting perfectly into place with one another, I think this concept is really effective and simply yet effectively represents unity as a principle because it shows that two aspects fitting together perfectly as a whole which is exactly what unity is.
Overall, ive been able to create these unity concepts that could potentially represent the principle for me within my editorial and ive been able to explore what unity is and how to visually represent it which is really helping me to advance my skills in visual communication within my designs. Overall, I will be able to develop these ideas now into the final design that I will be using for my project at the end.
This idea is based off of lines coming together to create one shape effectively. This is effective because it represents unity and also is a simplistic shape that uses lines and would communicate to the audience quickly and clearly.
This concept for unity was based off of the olympic sign and the sign for earth, sea and sky. This is to show completeness and represent how circles are complete and effective and simple like this.

Interesting inspiration for front cover of magazine
In my research I looked at different front pages I could give my editorial because they needed to be something to do with the overall idea of dots, lines and planes as wel as my colour palette of black and white and look effective overall. This inspiration was really helpful within my research to help me to engage with my work and understand exactly what I wanted from the front of my editorial and exactly what it will look like. I want something that keeps with the brand, simple and striking that shows some sort of principle of design.

this first right side page will be the pattern that I create in some sort of context whether that be a book cover or poster to represent the start of the article of that particular principle, this will be a simplistic pattern that is black and white and based off of dots, lines and planes to show the audience what the article is going to be about and how the principle can be represented in a basic way on something. Title page that includes definition of the principle with some information about it to introduce the audience to it
This page would be about the actual principle and information explaining about it using dots, lines and planes with typography and subtitles to explain the principle in the most visual way I can using the method of the simplistic shapes to show the visual side of it- this would be effective and bring together the overall editorial layout I can go for.
Here I am sketching layout compositions for my editorial so I can figure out what its going to look like. At the moment im thinking I want the patterns im producing to explain the editorial then have a couple of pages after that with simple graphic visuals of shapes that explain what the specific principle is and how to use it. I think this layout will be effective because it will be exactly what I wanted to achieve from my editorial, an editorial that will educate first year university students on the principles in a fun, visual way.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS editorial pages concepts Editorial layout- concepts This concept is showing that I could create a double page spread with a quote about the principles and a little bit of information for the audience with a pattern in the background acting as texture for the pages e.g. two circles representing hierarchy etc. This would be effective because it would be a design within itself and would also re establish the idea that the principles are important within design overall.
Here I am concepting more ideas on how to compose my final editorial. Concepting how I am going to compose my editorial is helping me to visualise it in my head so I know exactly what I need to gather in order to create an editorial that will be effective and actually work as a guide for my audience in a visual way.
Article about the principle I introduce, about how to use it and the benefits of it to quickly educate the reader on it with lots of visuals and quick easy to take in information.
This page could have a huge title of what the principle is, then a little bit of information about it with a pattern in the background- this would establish the setting of the principle- i will be using a 3 column grid to create my content also because in my research thats what is the most popular use of the grid within magazines.

Editorial layout- concepts
The front and back page and the two inside first pages are in seperate files, so when I talk about page number im talking about the actual content within the magazine pages. Here I am planning to have a front and back page, a blank first page then a contents page, then after the contents page a quote about the principles, then starting off on the right is the first principle pattern in context that introduces the next couple of pages and what theyre about- which principle. Then its a double page spread on the principle and that repeats throughout the editorial. This layout will be effective in my magazine because it will display a contents and then each pattern will introduce and split up the magazine because each pattern will be at the begeinning of each section, introducing what the next couple of pages will be about ( which principle) then the double page spread will be about that paticular principle.
Line that faded off on the quote page- joining on to show end
Here, I have started to plan out what my editorial will look like in terms of the content on each page. I have done this within my concepts because from looking into editorial printing and where im getting it printed from (Blurb) An editorial has to be divisible by 4, so 20,24,28,32,36,40,44,48 and so on. So I need to plan exactly how many pages im going to have and what is going to be included on them in order to be able to print my editorial correctly without pages not making sense and double page spreads not being together when I go to print.

This second idea on what I could lay my editorial out like as a concept concentrates on a line that continues throughout the editorial, on every 4th page, this would just link all of the pages and also create a sense of wholeness with the entire editorial. This would add to the effectiveness of the editorial because the audience could look for each line as they go through it.

Editorial layout- concepts iF i wanted 48- have to include 4 more pages, 2 at start and 2 at endincluding quotes?
This final editorial page concepts is the most effective I think, it start off with the contents then on the left side is the pattern in context of a poster or book, then on the right page is an introduction to the principle that is going to be talked about, which includes a definition etc, then a double page spread about the principle, explaining about it and what it is and how its effective, then that continues throughout, and if i include 10 different principles this will lead up to 44 pages, which is a multiple of 4 which is exactly what i need and this gives the editorial breathing room to explain each principle in depth enough with enough visuals that it looks effective and the audience will enjoy it. I think in my developments I will definatly go with this composition of pages because it makes sense and will give me enough room to do what i set out to do which is create an editorial that educates my audience on the principles enough with visuals that its not boring and gives them an insight into what they should be thinking about when designing which will make their designing better in the long run.
This composition is front page, then blank, then contents page, then penguin page, then 3 consecutive pages explaining that paticular principle- then penguin again then 3 consecutive pages explaining the principle then finally a back page- this should lead into a multiple of 4 and include everything I need for the editorial. -

Each title would come along with ‘a guide to the principles’ . Personally, i think that elements is the best option, as it explains that the principles are the elements of design, they go along with your design, they help it as long as the elements are applied. I asked for feedback on what I should call my editorial, I got 3 votes for Elements, 1 for root, 2 for code and thats it, so I think I will definalty go with elements, because it makes the most sense and has been voted the best idea I have for my name of my editorial, and makes sense because the principles are the elements of design.
Element means the essential part of something, the princinples are an essential part of any design to make it effective- this title would be effective because of this.

I know that my title is going to be elements, then with ‘a guide to the principles of design’ underneath it because from research it shows that you should include some context, so I decided to add that. I need to come up with what my front cover will actually look like in the end though.

I have started to just experiment with patterns that I had already came up with for the front cover. The front cover needs to have a bold piece of work on it to make the audience want to pick it up, but it also must go along with the theme of my editorial and the colour scheme etc, so the principles, so it has to have something to do with the principles. This first concept is to do with repetition, i think it looks effective enough to represent the principles I am creating, but it isnt really vage enough because it references one principle so I think I will keep trying and experimenting with the front covers until I come up with one that looks the most effective.

ELEMENTS a guide to the principles of design
This concept was another idea that I took from my previous pattern concepts that I have created. This is effective because it uses lines and is a very central piece to my editorial. I think that this piece is strong and simple and communicates effectively to the audience the idea of patterns and the brand im trying to go for with the black and white.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS editorial front page concepts Front cover of editorial concepts
It has been really effective concepting what will go on the front of my editorial because ive been able to come up with some effective ideas and understand that whatever i go with should represent the editorial as something that is trying to show the design principles effectively. Overall, I am happy with the designs ive came up with and will be developing them in the next stage of my project to create my final front cover of my editorial.
ELEMENTS
This front page concept is a new pattern I’ve came up with for this brief to represent contrast and the fact that you cant really see the other side of the shape, but its there and completes the shape, which is a kind of metaphor for the principles of design, you may not notice them all the time, but theyre there and they complete the designs that designers are creating and make them overall more effective. This piece, to be critical, is slightly un balanced so I dont know whether it would work on the front of a magazine because of the composition being unbalanced but I will work on this within my developments.
ELEMENTS
This idea is based off of proportion as a principle, because proportion actually appears in nature, science, maths etc and is just naturally in the universe, I thought it would be the perfect principle to go on the front of my magazine. It sits well in the middle, isnt too un balanced and is a really effective piece of design using lines, which fits with my brand.
a guide to the principles of design
I will definatly consider this design within my developments because its a very effective piece and would suit the front of my editorial to represent it as an editorial for the design principles.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS moving image concepts These lines are part of a circle that is split up, in the first 5 scenes its quick transitions between these lines that are spinning within the compositionthey then turn into a circle (dot)
lines come in to represent a circle, moving around
Spinning- with lines coming off of them to show movement.
at the end of them moving they form a dot.
this moving image starts off with bits of the circle spinning and transitioning into one another, this then turns into a dot. This moving image concept is based off of dots, lines and planes and the title to advertise the editorial. This moving image is simplier than other ones I have concepted, but to be critical i dont think it advertises enough for what i’m doing effectively, but the transitions would be good to include. Each square will be about 0.5 seconds to 1 second long. This moving image is going to be to advertise my editorial piece and will play along side it at my honours show.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS moving image concepts This is a line going through a dot, then the dot spliiting into two planes, the plane turns into a line, then the line goes on its side and turns into the line that underlines the title- these transitions would be really quick and enable the audience to witness some shapes and then the advertisement of the title of the editorial.
line goes through a dot to split it
dot turns into two planes
Line is moved down to underline title- transition.
Planes get thinner and turn into a line.
The sub title then comes in afterwards making it clear what the moving image is about.
The line underlines the title that fades in-
This moving image then ends with the title of the editorial. This is effective because it shows the shapes that I’m going to use within my editorial to explain the principles and would visually advertise my editorial effectively overall so that when the audience sees this they can then look at my editorial and see the explinations. This moving image concept uses the shapes that i will be using and my whole project is based around, dots, lines and planes. It uses these shapes to create a moving image that advetises my editorial and what its about as a kind of ‘teaser trailer’, it will end with the title of my moving image so the audience knows its about that. From my research I found moving images that were geometric shapes that were animated and transitioned in cool effective ways, this will be what my moving image will be based around and will be fast paced to get my audiences attention and make it look effective.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS moving image concepts Moving image concepts - honours three
All of my moving image concepts are based off of shapes because thats what my entire design is about and editorial, the shapes that I create to represent the principles will be used within this moving image and be effective and transitions will be used to make it look effective overall as ideas.
Split
Split turns into shapes, scaled down, and the shapes turn into the title of the editorial- all slides are 2 seconds.
Title of editorial.
This moving image storyboard is very simple, and would only last about 10 seconds. This idea is based on whether I would want my moving image to be this quick, to be critical, i dont think id want it to be this quick because with people walking around the end of year show they might not understand it if its only 10 seconds and i cant really get the idea across, but it is effective because it would use the shapes that I want to use and has been good exploration for me to understand where i want to go with my moving image.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS moving image concepts This moving image is based more on the shapes interacting with eachother, like making eachother shrink or, as you can see in the first couple of slides of the storyboard, the shapes hold weight, which makes the line tip like a see-saw. This moving image idea is effective because of this overall concept of the shapes holding personalities almost and would be very visual stimulating to the audience.
Bigger circle tips the line- showing hierarchy
They both then roll off of the composition
They then explodemaking way for a new shape two dots appear, very close to eachother, showing proximity and balance, they vibrate because theyre too close which causes tension in a composition.
The lines then come into the composition and turn on their side- this is to represent alignment within a composition. This would be simple and black and white to visually show this principle to the audience.
This moving image is based off of the shapes being really animated, because my audience is quite young, this would suit their tastes from what I have researched. Because its quick and gets the message across whilst also being entertaining. I will definalty look back into my research on after effect tutorials on animating shapes and adding bits to make them look more effective. I can also reference my research on the principles and about them to use to create my moving image, like the shapes interacting with eachother and how two dots coming together creates tension which references balance principle etc. Overall, I will be developing these moving image ideas to make them more effective, but they will most probably be shapes interacting with eachother to represent and ‘tease’ the principles that will be explained within the editorial.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS moving image concepts
Moving image concepts - honours four The line would then go into a spiral to show the golden ratio- this would spin and then have dots appear inside it, the line would dissapear and there would be dots left everywhere as you can see in box 9 spiral animation would be a transition from the lines previously shown in this moving image concept, I will have to reference my research to understand how this works within after effects.
I then thought an effective idea would be that the shapes turn into the title at the end to show that whatever the title is about is something to do with shapes- which is what my project is about, dots, lines and planes explaining the principles of design in a visual, fun way for my audience to educate themselves on to make their designing better at a basic level.
Turn into the shapes Dots would move out the way for a bigger dot-showing hiearchy, then the dot would shrink
The shapes would turn into the title of the editorial and that would be the end of this moving image.
I think this moving image is effective because it clearly shows some of the principles to the audience and also effectively advertises the editorial piece with the title at the end. This carries on the theme of the moving image being created to advertise the editorial piece that I am making using the shapes that I have used to explain the principles to the audience within the editorial piece. This idea does this effectively because I am able to show some of the principles through shapes and then show the title at the end, visually appealing to the audience using fast paced animation that will get their attention with splashes of an accent colour on a mostly black and white composition.

Then after its a smaller circle, other shapes appear in a line that has the same amount of shapes as the title of the book. The shapes come out of a line to appear like theyre coming into the composition more smoothlyThe shapes then turn into the title of the book
All of these transitions will have motion blur added to make them look more effective. They will also be as smooth as possible in order to keep them being as clean and clear as possible as a moving image.

Use line to underline the title then the subheading of the title appears- ‘a guide to the principles’ fades after five seconds and thats the end of the moving image
The moving image fading and going into the title of my editorial is effective because it will confirm to the audience that the moving image is a ‘teaser’ for the editorial. As well as it being a teaser, I wanted to create this moving image to show what I can do with animation and how I can create it from such simplistic shapes and make it look amazing. I want to create something that is quick, simple and communicates quickly with a sense of the overall theme being shown within it effectively.
HONOURS-CONCEPTS moving image concepts
Moving image concepts - honours - explination This moving image is based around the idea that it is an advertisement for my editorial piece that is a guide to the design principles for first years in university, to remind them what the principles are and how to use them effectively to make their design work better. The moving image is based off of very fast paced transitions to go with the song that I have chosen for the moving image. The fast transitions consist of first a dot, line and a plane, all transitiining amongst eachother, it then turns into the principles that I have included within my editorial piece to advertise the VISUAL aspect of the editorial piece, because after researching, ive realised that the audience would want something thats more visual and not boring like a school class for the principles, so ive based it more off of the visuals inside of the editorial to grab peoples attention, and then when they see the title at the end they will want to know where the title is from and what is inside of the editorial that links to the fast paced moving image they will see. It is also fast paced because after my research on the audience, the age group im looking at (eighteen to twenty year olds) have ever growing, short attention spans, so to create a moving image that isnt slow will engage my audience more effectively. The moving image will be black and white with one accent colour to keep with the brand of my editorial piece because thats what colours my editorial is, to keep it as simple as possible, the only colour featured will be the accent colour and the multiple colours shown for COLOUR THEORY, because i couldnt show colour theory without colour. after all of the transitioning shapes that you can see in my storyboard, it will go into the title of the editorial and the subtitle for it is ‘a guide to the principles’, so the audience will get the gist of what it could be about, and then in my honours show, the editorial will be right next to the MAC that the moving image will be played on, so they can then go over and read it and educate themselves on the principles of design. This moving image is effective because it visually shows the shapes that subtly show the audience the principles, then they can go and read the editorial from that, its effective because it would definalty advertise my editorial piece because its all visual and nice graphics so the audience would be interested, and ive used my research on the audience age group to see what type of moving image they would like to inform my decision on what to conceptOverall, the moving image would definalty advertise my editorial and will also showcase my graphic design/motion image skills and show how i’ve linked it and kept the brand identity going with the black, white and accent colour and it will all link when i put it together for my end of year show. -
