GARSTANG RAMBLERS Sat 3rd Oct - Irwel Trail Sat 10th Oct - Staveley/Gurnal Dubbs Sat 24th Oct - Kirby Lonsdale Sat 31st Oct - Stocks Reservoir Our August programme comprised mainly (and unusually) Lake District walks. The first was a walk from Glen Mary Bridge to and along the Tarn Hows Lake. From there we ascended Black Crag where, in the sunshine, there was a 360 degree panorama of all the South Lakes hills and mountains. The next ramble started in Skipton. We strode out to a peak called Sharp Haw which had good views of part of the Yorkshire hills and valleys. Returning to Skipton, there was time for a quick look around Skipton market before returning to Garstang. Coniston and Yew Tree Tarn was our next walk. This started in Coniston and ascended
to the beautiful Tarn Hows lake where we had our packed lunches on the shore. Returning to Coniston via the woodland surrounding Yew Tree Tarn, we had time for coffee and cakes in the town centre. Our final walk of the month was to Walla Crag, which is situated on the eastern side of Derwent Water. We started our walk along the lakeside, having coffee on seating near Derwent Boat Hire. Turning east and ascending Walla Crag gave good views of many northern Lakeland fells (Skidaw, Blencathra, Cat Bells etc) and views across Derwent Water to Lake Bassenthwaite. We are always welcoming to new walkers and try to find new and interesting places to ramble in. If you would like to join us on any future walk or just want to talk to us to find out more please call our secretary. Carol Stenning (01995) 601478

NATURE’S REMEDIES I thought I would look into the wonderful world of herbs this month. Herbal remedies are effective, gentle and very safe. They work in harmony with your body rather than ‘imposing’ changes upon it as many modern pharmaceutical drugs do. Many people turn their back on nature’s way, whilst forgetting that the vast majority of modern drugs are derived from plants! A common experience I see is people taking a herbal remedy without the right advice and thus find it does not work….leading to the belief that all herbs do not work. Therefore, always get good advice from someone who is trained to offer you the advice, whether that is a trained medical herbalist or welltrained staff at a local health store. Of course, one must not forget that your lifestyle and behaviour also contribute to your health so taking a herbal remedy to lose weight whilst gorging on doughnuts and
chips then watching five hours of television a night is, unfortunately, doomed to failure! So here is a list of some useful herbs for common complaints: Sleep problems: Try Valerian and Hops as pills, tinctures or tea. Allergies: Nettles can reduce allergic reactions as can Vitamin C. Take a little Vitamin C every day and regularly drink nettle tea. Ginger is great and is good if you have chesty congestion. Digestive troubles: Peppermint is soothing. If you are very sensitive try Tormentil which is very calming to the gut. Varicose Veins: Aesculus (horse chestnut) has been proven to help ease the discomfort, help prevent further trouble and even aid regeneration of poor veins. Please try this before electing for surgery! Nausea after fatty or rich foods: try Milk Thistle extract which is also useful after too much to drink (though I do not endorse such behaviour of course!). Pain Relief: Arnica gel is very gentle acting but effective, good for chronic pain but also for trauma such as bruises or if your back has just ‘gone’. Devil’s Claw is also a natural pain reliever. If the pain is nerve pain try St John’s Wort which is also good for mild depression. For low moods try the above or use Lemon Balm (Melissa) which has a mood lifting property. If you’re a chap who is having to get up at night to pass water and it is starting to affect your sleep….most often because of a benign enlarged prostate – step one, see your GP, if all is okay step two is to try Saw Palmetto or Prostasan which can really help these symptoms. To prevent colds and flu use Echinacea which helps the efficiency of your immune system.

SEQUENCE DANCES - CLAUGHTON
If you have menopausal symptoms remember that this is a natural process, NOT a disease. Time will cure it but there are useful herbs to help ease symptoms if they are particularly bad. With any hormonal problem you must cut out all added sugars which can often provide benefits without other intervention.

Avena Sativa (oats) is very calming which can also be great at any time of stress as well as with the mood swings that may occur at menopause.

GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS Lion Ian Chapman It was with deep sadness that members learned of the sudden death of Lion Ian - a long-serving member of the Club. He died on the 18th August, in Southampton Hospital, following a severe stroke. Lion Ian was born in Hove and joined the Lions Organisation in Maidstone, Kent. Through his work with various Omnibus companies, he lived and worked in Bristol, the West Riding of Yorkshire and after joining the Ribble Bus Company finally settled in Garstang, where he joined the Club in 1980. He immediately became involved in the Club’s activities, taking on many roles over the years. He was presented with a Melvin
Jones Award for his dedicated service. He remained an Affiliate Member when he and his wife, Barbara, moved down to Nursling, near Southampton two years ago and would phone his apologies, before each monthly meeting! The Club was represented at his funeral by Lion Allan Townsend. Rugby Club - Junior’s Summer Camp The Club loaned their marquee for this event, held from Tuesday, 25th August, until Friday, 28th August. The event was well supported and participants enjoyed the whole event. Lancashire Game Festival Members helped with the car parking at this new event at Scorton in September. Attendance was very good over the two days, with great interest shown and members were kept busy at this final parking event of the season.

WINDSOR SURGERY (cont) we amended the second question of the survey. We replaced ‘Can you tell us why you rated us in the way’ to ‘If you could change one thing about our surgery, what would it be?’ Comments received this month include: ‘Twice I’ve been told you can’t see a Dr about two problems in one visit. You have to make two different appointments! Seems a waste of valuable time?’ We have two highly trained Nurse Practitioners who deal with the bulk of the more minor illnesses that patients present with. This means the doctors generally see the more complex patients and rarely get a minor problem that they can deal with in less than their 15 minute appointment times. For them to deal with more than one such problem within 15 minutes is simply not realistic and would mean they would be constantly running late. Occasionally, if
appropriate, the doctors will deal with more than one problem but no patient likes to feel rushed and equally patients do not like to be kept waiting unnecessarily. If you think you require more than 15 minutes for your appointment then please ask for a double appointment. ‘I wouldn’t change anything.’ ‘Nothing. The surgery is the best I’ve ever been to.’ Thank you to everyone who took the time to participate in the survey. Your feedback is very much appreciated. We are now on Facebook. Please visit www. facebook.com/WindsorSurgery and ‘like’ our page for the quickest way to receive the Surgery news. Your support is appreciated. The Windsor Surgery Team (01995) 603616

We need new ideas all the time and look forward to expanding our small but friendly group. We meet on the second Monday of the month at The Squash. Helen Lomax (01253) 702743
GARSTANG PAINTING CLUB Well, after an exciting August with the Arts Festival and a very interesting September including Anthony Barrow’s demonstration of acrylics, watercolours, gesso and charcoal and of course the ‘Ron Coombes Exhibition’ we are now ready for a more relaxed time with another ‘brusho’ members only workshop/ demonstration with Judith Farnworth on Wed 14th Oct. That is until we exhibit the skills we have learned in our own members’ exhibition opening on Tues 20th Oct. Some of the exhibits may have been seen before but most are for sale and this promises to be a very interesting and varied exhibition at the Garstang Arts Centre running through to (good heavens!) the Christmas Craft Fair! So, for anyone looking for a unique and attractive gift for that time of year, come and browse through the art exhibition. There will be a variety of subjects on show to suit every taste. CATTERALL GARDENING CLUB The September meeting was full of tips and advice for the coming Spring. Tim Smith from Lytham St Annes, suggested plants for Spring colour to be planted now while the soil is still warm. He illustrated his talk with colourful images of plants which would work well together with Spring bulbs. The photographs of North Yorkshire showing daffodils planted by a river were stunning and made us realise that there were many gardening jobs to be completed before the winter arrives, and spurred us on to get the bulbs in the soil this week! We would like to thank Tim for his humorous talk and interesting gardening advice. Our next and final meeting of the season will be on Tues 20th Oct at 7:00pm in Catterall Village Hall. We will be celebrating our first year as a gardening club by having a social evening, which will include a team quiz event, so bring a pen and think of a great gardening name for your team! We hope to see you there. Any plants, cakes or raffle prizes would be much appreciated. During the year, I have been taking photographs of Catterall Gardening Club evenings, and have made a photographic diary of our meetings, which will be on display. There will also be photographs showing Catterall in Bloom 2015 and Stone Cross Gardens with their new community garden and stone seat. Thank you to everyone who helped with the September meeting. Your help is always appreciated. The beautiful dahlias which Andrew and Joan brought to the plant table were spectacular, and shows that we have some talented gardeners in Catterall! GARSTANG HISTORICAL SOCIETY
BLACKPOOL STEAM
The History of Lancashire’s Countryside
Steam & Vintage Vehicle Rally Sat 3rd & Sun 4th Oct, 10:00am
Naturalist, historian, angler and author, Malcolm Greenhalgh is the guest speaker at the next meeting of Garstang Historical Society. His topic will be ‘The History of Lancashire’s Countryside’ - a look at how the county’s natural landscape has evolved over the centuries, including issues such as enclosures, land drainage, agricultural improvements and modern farming methods. Malcolm studied Biological Sciences at university and has a doctorate in the ecology of estuaries. He was a lecturer for sixteen years before becoming a freelance writer. He is the author of many books on a variety of topics ranging from fly fishing and birdwatching to local and natural history. His book “The River Ribble: The History and Natural History of a River” (Carnegie Publishing, 2008) has become something of a regional classic. When not out in the countryside with his flyfishing rods, nets and binoculars, Malcolm enjoys growing fruit and vegetables, cooking and eating good food, and drinking good wine. He hates the rudeness and ignorance of so many modern Englishmen (and women), cats that defecate on his vegetable patch, and most politicians and (un)civil servants.
South Car Park, Blackpool. Full size steam engines, miniature engines, tractors, classic cars and commercial vehicles alongside a traditional fun fair, kids games, catering and a craft tent with a large selection of jams and preservatives, jewelery, rally memorabilia, office stationary and sweets. AUDIENCE WITH MALCOLM HEBDEN Garstang Arts Centre Sat 3rd Oct, 2:00pm One of Britain’s most popular actors, Malcolm Hebden, who plays busybody Norris Coles in TV soap Coronation Street, is appearing in Garstang. Malcolm, who lives in the Ribble Valley, is special guest at an afternoon fundraiser for Garstang Arts Centre. He will take to the stage with his former drama tutor and longstanding friend, Garstang resident Mr James Dodding. ‘An audience with Malcolm Hebden’ will see the soap star interviewed about his life on stage, TV, and as a theatre director. The audience will also be invited to ask questions - though Malcolm won’t be giving away any storylines!
His debut in Coronation Street in 1974 was not as Norris, but as Mavis Riley’s Spanish boyfriend Carlos. Malcolm first appeared as Norris Cole in 1994 and left the programme in 1997, returning to the role in 1999. He also made an appearance in ‘Last of the Summer Wine’. The Corrie star has won numerous awards including Funniest Character in both 2001 and 2002 in the ‘Inside Soap’ Awards and Best Onscreen Partnership (with Norris’s then business partner, Rita Sullivan - played by Barbara Knox) in 2006. ‘An Audience with Malcolm Hebden’ is at Garstang Arts Centre on Sat 3rd Oct at 2:00pm. The event is strictly ticket only which are £5 including refreshments, available from the Arts Centre and Market Place News, Garstang. Anthony Coppin

Sally is a senior lady still looking for a loving retirement home. She has been with us since April. We would like to find her a foster home as soon as we can. Medical costs for Sally will be covered. She came into the centre with her sister Tilly when their owner passed away. We would like to rehome them together but this is not essential. However if she is not rehomed with Tilly she would prefer to be the only pet in the household. Sally is a senior lady needing a quiet home to live out her retirement. She would prefer not to live with children as too much noise and activity can be stressful for her. She was found to be in poor health when she

Dairy farming is in crisis and the village shop has closed. So as a positive action to combat milk prices falling by 28% since November last year, my husband John decided that St Michaels village would benefit from a local farm’s Milk Bar. The Milk Bar on Hall Lane has been open for a few weeks now and I hope the village see us as an asset. We sell milk produced on our family farm, a plus to anyone considering food miles! Pilling potatoes, free range eggs and logs. Our milk is branded as NEMi even though our family name is Swale. This stands for Naturally Enriched Milk innovations. Our cows’ feed contains an organic yeast supplement to promote their health which as

We have really enjoyed meeting people who come to the Milk Bar. Even after a few weeks there is still a great feeling of pride each time a customer buys from us. Thank you to everyone who has supported the Milk Bar. Shopping locally is a great way to support our rural economy and keeping village shops open since if we don’t use them we lose them! Anne Swale
GARSTANG HOCKEY Club Day It was a fantastic turnout on Sun 13th Sept for Garstang’s annual Club Open Day. The day kicked-off with a junior tournament which was held on a new surface for the first time - tarmac! The club are working in partnership with Garstang Community Academy to get a synthetic pitch installed and the day was attended by Garstang Academy’s ‘PitchIn’ project team and England Hockey’s Clubs and Facilities Manager - Louise Bull. GLHC ran a very successful Bakeoff which saw lots of healthy competition. The day was nicely rounded off with some friendly, competitive hockey by the parents and nonusual hockey players!

COMPUTER SAFETY After looking at the basics for hardware and software in previous months, it’s time to turn to the user side of things – this means you! Everything we’ve covered so far needs YOU to either do or not do certain things, e.g. make sure that updates are applied and security programs enabled. There are a number of other aspects where the user is key, as a machine which is fully updated and protected by security software is still at risk if, for example, the bad guys get hold of your passwords. So let’s start by looking at some of the general ways you can safeguard your activities – both online and away from the computer. The handling of scam phone calls has been mentioned before, but it’s always worth repeating that companies such as Microsoft do not ring people up to say that you have a problem on your computer. If you receive any calls asking about computer problems, please just say ‘no thank you’ and hang up. Do not give any of your details, especially logins or passwords, and please don’t follow any instructions they give you to type on the computer. Similarly BT do not ring to collect a credit card payment for an unpaid bill which you are unaware of, with a threat to immediately disconnect your phone if you don’t pay. And your bank will not ring to ask you to withdraw your savings from your main account and deposit it into a ‘special’ new one. Police advice regarding bank and credit card thefts is as follows: “Your bank or the police will never call, visit or email you to request your login details or PIN, or to collect your card. If you receive such a request, it will always be fraud, so protect yourself and call the police.” If you are concerned about any call, make a note straight away with as much detail about what they said and try doing 1471 to get their

number (although this is generally ‘withheld’). Then ask a friend or family member, or another expert, for advice or phone the police.
A big thank you to everyone involved in the Fun Day on Sunday 13th Sept, helping it to be such a success.
If you want to ring your bank or the police to check, try to use a different telephone e.g. a mobile. If you can’t, be sure to hang up for at least five minutes before you dial out, or call a friend (whose voice you recognise) before making the important call as fraudsters will try to stay on the line to answer your call.
The sun shone and the Vikings were defeated by the children! Several hundred people attended during the day and the response was “they had had a good time”! A special thank you to the Scouts for manning the BBQ in the searing heat!
The same advice about not giving information away applies to emails too, and this will be covered in detail next month. In the meantime, don’t forget to check out some of the advice available on the Get Safe Online website at www.getsafeonline.org and if you have any questions or concerns about security, then please do give me a ring for a quick chat. CAT SMITH MP United Utilities August saw many Wyre residents unable to drink water from the tap, use the water for food preparation or cleaning teeth for a month. United Utilities issued a ‘boil water notice’ after discovering cryptosporidium in the water at the Franklaw treatment centre. During the water contamination period many constituents got in touch with me and I did manage to get resolutions to issues faced by families and businesses locally. Now the issue has been resolved and it’s safe to drink from the tap again – hurrah! However, I have been contacted by some constituents whose businesses were adversely affected and are in the process of agreeing a compensation package from United Utilities. If you feel you would like my support and assistance in finding a resolution with United Utilities please get in touch. However, I can only help constituents who live in the Lancaster and Fleetwood constituency. At the time of writing we are still waiting to find out why the water was contaminated and what steps United Utilities are planning on taking to ensure this doesn’t happen again. Cuts to Tax Credits Despite an outcry against the Government’s plans to cut tax credits, the vote to cut them passed in early September. I opposed these cuts because of the impact it will have on working families up and down the country. To put this into perspective over 3 million families are now facing an average loss of over £1,000. It is shameful that the working people of Britain continue to be punished by this government for a crisis they did not cause. Meanwhile the bankers who were responsible continue to see their wages rise and the bonus culture back. The government have essentially introduced a penalty on work that will actually weaken the incentive for people to look for jobs or take on more hours. The Government have promised that people will be compensated by their so called National Living Wage. However the highly respected and independent think tank, Institute of Fiscal Studies, confirmed that it is “arithmetically impossible” for the Government’s so called ‘National Living Wage’ to make up for these losses. This evidence contradicts the Government’s claims that it seeks to reform the social security system to help people who work. In fact they are just bringing down the welfare bill on the backs of the poor. This is careless, unnecessary and driven purely by ideology. I want both a fair society and a strong economy and this can only be achieved by

CAT SMITH MP (cont) supporting people in work. I would like to see a plan to do things differently, by supporting a higher wage economy where we directly tackle low pay and insecure work. A New Kind of Politics The Labour Party has spoken with over 1,000 local people taking part in the vote from Lancaster and Fleetwood. With the largest ever ballot in modern politics, we elected Jeremy Corbyn as Leader and Tom Watson as Deputy Leader. For Jeremy Corbyn, his task was immediate and this week he set about ushering in his promised new era of politics. First on the agenda was appointing a new shadow cabinet. Labour’s frontbench was a reflection of both the change and continuity needed to hold this government to account. Most notably, Labour can claim to have delivered, for the first time in history, a shadow cabinet where women are in the majority. I am pleased to be able to play a small role in this with a junior post as a shadow Women and Equalities Minister. Then there was Prime Minister’s Question Time. So often this weekly encounter between Opposition leader and Prime Minister turns into a theatrical clash. An opportunity to hold the Prime Minister to account on behalf of the public just becomes a show of putdowns and soundbites. But Jeremy Corbyn, determined to do things differently, used his first PMQs as Labour Leader to ask some of the questions that the public wanted asked. Questions which were submitted in their thousands. He raised issues on housing, tax credits and mental health. All top priorities for Labour and areas where the Tory Government is failing working people. Constituent? You’re welcome to get in touch… If you live in the Lancaster and Fleetwood

We will meet on the last Friday of every month and you would be most welcome.
Dennis has grown into one of Atlantic Canada’s most potent songwriters, with beautifully poetic lyrics and a veteran’s sense of melody, tune and arrangement. His influences include Harry Nilsson, Elvis Costello, Paul Simon, Neil Young and Alex Chilton - but his sound is entirely his own.

NEW COMMUNITY DIRECTORY Voluntary and community groups in Wyre and Fylde are being asked to include information about their activities in a new Wyre & Fylde Community Directory that could be used by Health Professionals across the areas.
Garstang Ladies Speakers Club could be just the thing you need. We improve our skills whilst enjoying delivering and listening to speeches that are capable of both making us think but most often laugh.
The new directory will inform GP’s and their staff where to steer patients towards local groups, activities and services and provide a valuable source of data.
Come along as a visitor. You will be most welcome and will be under no pressure to speak.
Blackpool, Wyre & Fylde Council for Voluntary Service, who are compiling the directory, said: ‘The area has hundreds of community groups with activities taking place every week and Doctors are keen to steer people their way. Unfortunately GPs and other Health Professionals do not always know who is doing what. We are asking people to get in touch with us so that we can list their activities and venues in the new directory.’ It will be a great help to doctors and patients as well as helping organisers publicise their activities – and even boost their membership numbers and income. It is entirely free for all concerned and only takes five minutes to arrange the listing. ‘Everyone can be a winner as hundreds of health professionals in the area will be using the directory.’ People and organisations wishing to be included in the directory are asked to download and complete the form by using this link: http://www.cvsbwf.org/9007fylde-and-wyre-community-directoryopen-for-entries

GARSTANG GARDENING CLUB Last month saw a very well supported Annual Club Flower Show held at the Cabus Village Hall which proved an excellent venue. There were more entries by more members for the first time for a few years , even despite the weather, which as gardeners we are all inclined to blame when things don’t quite go right! OK so the pumpkins were not only light on the ground and light in weight but this was more than made up for by the magnificence of the new winner’s trophy. Made in combination by the skills of Pilling Pottery, a very lifelike ceramic pumpkin was mounted on a mini wheelbarrow made by committee member Bob Sutcliffe . Won this year by Roger Broadbelt this could well be the trophy, plus a bit more sunshine, to boost entries in this class in years to come! At the end of formal proceedings the
chairman Ray Pearson expressed thanks to all who had contributed and in particular to June Gornall who as Show Secretary had pulled everybody together to make such a good event. Our first opening talk of the 2015/16 season also occurred in early September when members were treated to pictures of Dale House Garden at Goosnargh, home of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Luke, which the club had visited earlier in the year. Certainly if your after continuous colour then mass planting of bulbs will certainly fill the early part of the year and is followed up by bedding and herbacceous plants for the summer. This month on Mon 12th Oct Phil Dunnet, nurseryman from Ribblesdale Nurseries will be talking about the provision of Autumn and Winter Colour and will be mainly talking about seasonal plants and bringing many

ACTION GARSTANG Action Garstang is a new group co-ordinating efforts to oppose the proposed development of the Community Centre and adjacent car park by Keyworker Homes. Keyworker are proposing a cafe and shop(s) on the site of the Community Centre building and a four storey block of luxury retirement flats at the bottom of the car park, completely obscuring the view of the river and fells beyond. The proposals were unveiled to Garstang residents at public consultations in early September and met with almost universal objections by those who went to see them. For anyone who hasn’t seen the proposals, they can be viewed at Market Place News in Garstang and also on the Garstang Under Threat website. Both proposed buildings are to be very modern in style, totally out of keeping with the area and will vastly reduce the available car parking spaces for shoppers and visitors to the town. No parking means people will shop and visit elsewhere and that’s not good for Garstang businesses.
meeting, details of date and time will be advertised in the Courier, various shops around the town and on Facebook ‘Garstang Under Threat’ also on the website: www. garstangunderthreat.org To be put on the emailing list for updates just drop an email to: actiongarstang@gmail. com Mary G. The youth club will lose their home, as will the small businesses who work from the building. Keyworker Homes presented their ideas to the Town Council (and a large attendance of Garstang residents) at their meeting on 21st September, and as a result the Town Council will be writing to WBC to ask for postponement of any development until there is a Local Plan in place. They felt that WBC can’t possibly know what facilities will be required for Garstang residents until they know the extent of proposed building around the town. WBC is putting their Local Plan together at the moment, and the Town Council felt that any decisions regarding the Community Centre now would be premature. Action Garstang will be arranging a public

BEN WALLACE MP The summer is over, to be replaced with that “back to school” feeling. I hope students starting new schools this autumn – whether that be starting school for the first time or moving on to secondary school or college – are settling in well to their new surroundings. As well as a holiday in Anglesey, I have enjoyed spending time with my family in the constituency this summer. I’ve been busy out and about meeting local residents and businesses too. One of the biggest issues facing local residents this summer has been the requirement to boil tap water, due to contamination by the Cryptosporidium bug. I really do appreciate the difficulties and disruption this has caused to households,
particularly in the preparation of cold drinks and food. I am pleased that the requirement to boil water has been lifted across the constituency, but angry at the length of time United Utilities took to resolve the matter. Following my visit to Franklaw Water Treatment Works, which I mentioned in my last column, I continued to be in regular contact with senior managers at United Utilities demanding that they ensure that the infection was eliminated and that the company increased its efforts to communicate with those affected. I pushed for compensation to be awarded and am continuing to raise concerns about some aspects of the current offer which are not acceptable. I also spoke to the Environment Secretary, Liz Truss MP, to raise my concerns and those expressed by local residents. As a result the Government intervened to insist that United Utilities provided greater clarity to local residents, in terms of when water needed to be boiled and the progress which was being made to clear the network of the contamination. Going forward, lessons must be learned. To do this, we need to know how the contamination was caused and I will be following closely the work of the Drinking Water Inspectorate, which is responsible for investigating. I will not hesitate to call for a full Parliamentary Inquiry, if I have any doubts about the veracity of the Inspectorate’s investigation. Over the summer, I was delighted to visit the new RSPCA Animal Centre in Stalmine. It is an impressive, state of the art animal centre, which helps to re-home animals which have been removed from their owners by RSPCA Officers due to welfare concerns. The new centre opened this summer after 10 years of planning and at a cost of just under £3 million (paid for by the generosity of donations and legacies from local people). I also visited the British Association of Dental

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) Nurses, which is based at Hillhouse. The BADN is the only professional association with its headquarters in Wyre. They work to protect and represent the interests of dental nurses and I will be helping them with a number of issues which they raised with me, ranging from training to taxation and pensions. I had an enjoyable but serious meeting with dairy farmers from around Out Rawcliffe who are concerned about milk prices. In Westminster I am in touch with the Farming Minister to raise their calls for stronger powers for the Grocery Adjudicator to help tackle the abuse of the supply chain by the market dominance of the supermarkets and for more help for small and medium-sized farms with regard to milk pricing, specifically collective bargaining. I regret to inform you that the deadline for challenging the decision to grant planning permission to Halite/Canatxx for the gas storage facility under the Wyre has now passed. I understand that Halite/Canatxx has not intended to complete the construction of the facility itself and instead hopes to find a buyer. Given the level of debt the company has incurred in getting to this stage, the price they will need to achieve for the site will be significant. We will have to hope that there is no appetite to develop the site. Please be assured that I refuse to give up opposing this development. I have raised my concerns about the environmental impact with the European Commission, which still has the power to halt the development. I know that there is a great deal of concern in Garstang regarding the proposals for the redevelopment of the Community Centre, particularly about the potential design of the new building and the removal of much needed parking. As yet no formal planning application has been submitted. I am
meeting with Wyre Councillors this week to discuss the proposals and then intend to make contact with the developer, Keyworker Homes North West, to see whether I can influence the plans before an application is submitted. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance to you. You can email me at wallaceb@parliament.uk or write to me at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA. If you would like to book an appointment please call my Office at the House of Commons on 0207 219 5804. Alternatively, I can be contacted at my Constituency Office on (01995) 672976. Ben Wallace MP

GARSTANG TOWN COUNCIL Town Councillor Vacancy The Town Council was notified of the resignation of Cllr Chris Ryan, at August’s Town Council meeting. Wyre Council have advertised the vacancy and no request has been made for an election. The Town Council is therefore required to fill the position by co-option. Would you like to be involved in decisions that affect Garstang? Garstang Town Council Meetings are usually held on the third Monday of the month starting at 7:30pm. Councillors have three main areas of work: 1. Decision-making: through attending meetings and committees with other elected members, Councillors decide which activities to support, where money should be spent, what services should be delivered and what policies should be implemented. 2. Monitoring: Councillors make sure that their decisions lead to efficient and effective services by keeping an eye on how well things are working. 3. Getting involved locally: Councillors have responsibilities towards their constituents and local organisations. Further information can be obtained from the Clerk about becoming a local Councillor. The persons co-opted will hold office until May 2019. Any persons willing to fill these vacancies should apply to the Clerk in writing on or before Fri 13 Nov. The contact details are detailed below. Council Surgery The next Council Surgery is Sat 5th Oct from 10:00am to 12:00 noon. Please come along to Garstang Library to air your views. Any enquiries about the Town Council can be made to: Edwina Parry 07592 792 801 email: garstangtc@btinternet.com
