St James’ Church, Stalmine will be hosting a special evening to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee. Our platinum prom will be an opportunity to dust down your tiaras, shake the cobwebs from your finest attire, invest in a handheld flag and get ready for a whistle-stop tour through the 70 years of Her Majesty’s glorious reign! It promises to be a very visual evening. There will be lots to see on the screen, plenty of fun facts, many personal memories from decades gone by, some modelling of fashion trends throughout the years, community singing and maybe even a spot of dancing! CHARITY AFTERNOON TEA PARTY Fri 3rd June, 1:00pm The Shovels, Hambleton The Shovels Hambleton Charity committee will be holding a charity afternoon tea party on Fri 3rd June. This is to celebrate her Majesty the Queen’s platinum jubilee and raise money for local charities.
From 1:00pm onwards there will be various stalls in the garden and a mini fairground on the car park. Afternoon tea will be served in the garden, weather permitting or in the restaurant if not. Serving time will start approximately 2:30pm to 3:00pm. Live music will commence in the garden at 5:00pm subject to weather. Inside, the music will be from Paul Wrigley and Pete Finch from the fabulous local group the Captain’s Crew and will continue until 8:00pm. A raffle will be held with a free ticket included in the price of afternoon tea. Tickets are available from the Shovels until Wed 25th May. Price is £12 adults and under 12’s £10. Come along and join us for a fun afternoon of music and dancing for all. DJ John Sandham (Route 66 Music and Dance) will play music and take requests for most styles of dance including ballroom, sequence, Latin and line dance.
Please come along and join Fitbods for one of our two hour sponsored aerobathon challenges in aid of Brian House Children’s Hospice. You can choose from either a morning or evening challenge or both if you are feeling super fit!
We kick off with an hour of mixed dancing. John will teach an easy dance or two for those that wish to join in. After the first hour we will break for tea and cakes then continue with the dancing. It’s going to be a very enjoyable occasion so if you like to dance, drink lots of tea, eat cake and have fun come and help us celebrate our Queen’s platinum jubilee at Pilling Village Hall
This is a great opportunity to take part in a two hour workout that will include a warm-up, cool-down and a mixture of cardio, dance, strength, tone and flexibility exercises with some relaxation at the end. All of which can be done at your own pace and to great music.

AROUND THE WI Hambleton WI What a hoot we had last month when Linda Sawley, a very informative and entertaining speaker, presented her take on a life with shoes and matching handbags. Linda brought a selection of miniature shoes dating from the 1800’s - and probably before - explaining, at that time, only men wore decorative shoes and the more decorative they were, the wealthier the men were. She then presented shoes and handbags she had bought for herself and modelled one pair of very high heels; the heels comprising a set of books with a bow on top. She explained that bags and shoes were her weakness and she had bought so many that her husband had built a full length cupboard just to accommodate them.

LADIES OF OVER WYRE Eva Cocker, the deputy chairperson, gave a warm welcome to 26 ladies at the first meeting of Ladies of Over Wyre. Joanne Helliwell was our entertainment as ‘Betsy’. Previously Betsy had been a scullery maid, a housekeeper and now she had fallen in love and married her suitor. She gave a most amusing insight into the trials and tribulations leading up to her marriage, just to be happy ever after! Anne Ingham, the Secretary and events organiser, then proceeded to inform the ladies of forthcoming events planned for the next 12 months. There was an enthusiastic reception to all that was mentioned. A few trips were in the pipeline and again well received by all especially to Chatsworth House Christmas Exhibition and Market. Anne also encouraged the ladies to make suggestions of what they would like to do as well.
The ladies welcomed a cup of tea and biscuits whist membership forms were filled in and subscriptions paid to the treasurer, Barbara Lancashire. The first ‘ladies who lunch’ was held on Thurs 28th April at the Squash. In future, it will be at pre-arranged venues. All in all a very successful first meeting of Ladies of Over Wyre. BLACKPOOL ART SOCIETY Our annual art exhibition at The Heritage Centre in Lytham is now in progress until Sun 8th May. We invite the public to view this wonderful display of paintings - most of which are for sale. Our talented artists have been busy preparing for this event - our well-equipped Studio in Wilkinson Avenue in Blackpool enables our members to learn from other members and we hold regular demonstrations from visiting well known artists together with monthly appraisals of their work and workshops. We also hold social events which bring our members together in a very friendly atmosphere. We have members groups meeting daily in the studio. Our management committee has a vital role in our society and invite interested budding artists to find out more.

After a few cancellations due to Covid we finally were able to enjoy a lovely lunch at Singleton Lodge with 40 of our members.
We have returned after the Easter Holidays with lighter nights to look forward to and hopefully better weather.
On Fri 27th May at Staining Scout and Guide Hut we are holding an evening of singing and campfire songs with a hotpot supper.
We meet on Wednesdays in schools term time at Pilling Methodist Church: Beavers 6:30pm to 7:30pm. Cubs 6:30pm to 7:30pm. Scouts: 6:30pm to 8:00pm.
Girlguiding in Lancashire West is having a celebration and presentation evening at Ribby Hall which many of our members will be attending. I visited Blackpool South Guild and demonstrated painting on black paper which was a ‘work-along’ and members produced many good examples of artwork. Another guild had a demonstration of chutney making. It can be seen that we have a varied programme with something for everybody. If you wish to find out more, please give me a call. I have to announce the sad news that one of our long standing members, Ken Harrison has passed away. Ken was a life member of our club with a long service record of working on the committee, acting as treasurer and club chairman. Ken was a keen wildlife photographer who travelled extensively to follow his area of interest. He was a regular volunteer at Leighton Moss Reserve, was always willing to advise others and pass on his wide knowledge base. He will be sadly missed. RIP Ken. 2021-2022 Session We are now at the end of our 2021/2022 session. Our last club meeting will be on Wed 4th May when George Franks will present ‘Flash Photography’. That’s why we’ve started a new group on the first Wednesday of every month in The Front Room at Over Wyre Medical Centre, Wilkinson Way, Preesall. Myalgic encephalomyelitis, also called chronic fatigue syndrome or ME/CFS, is a long-term condition with a wide range of symptoms. The most common symptom is extreme tiredness. ME/CFS can affect anyone, including children. It’s more common in women, and tends to develop between your mid-20s and mid-40s. Common symptoms of ME/CFS include: •

Lancashire County Council wants to join up the gaps in our existing network of footpaths and cycle routes and provide safer, direct and more convenient routes. Working in partnership with Blackpool Council, they are developing local cycling and walking infrastructure plans, providing long term solutions for our future cycling and walking networks throughout Lancashire. The Fylde coast plan will include Blackpool alongside Fylde and Wyre. To help the council, they are asking for feedback from across the county on current cycling and walking provision in their area. They want to know what the gaps are in the network and what facilities would enable people to walk and cycle more. The survey will be available on Lancashire council’s website until Thurs 5th May.

SSRA Stalmine with Staynall Residents’ Association The Queen’s platinum jubilee celebrations are occupying the minds of committee members as we prepare for this once-in-a lifetime event. With so much being planned in the village we have decided to concentrate on the afternoon of Sat 5th June from 2:00pm to 5:00pm in the Seven Stars garden. We will have a stall providing activities for children concentrating on crown and tiara making. There will be a small charge for this to cover the cost of materials. There will be Ann Ralph’s amazing racing pigs and possibly some other amusements for all. Any surplus funds will go to local charities. We were surprised to hear about the enbloc resignation of all the parish councillors in protest against Wyre Council’s continual ignoring of the council’s representations about planning applications. Your residents’ association will monitor the interim arrangement put in by Wyre Borough until a new administration can be formed for our village. We regard the situation as so serious that we will be writing to MP Ben Wallace to ask him to persuade the minister responsible for local government to look at the circumstances and the local administration of town planning. I know from the emails I receive that many of you are becoming increasingly concerned about NHS waiting times and, in particular, the length of time it takes for ambulances to get to more rural areas like ours. CAT SMITH MP (cont) lists. Record numbers are being forced to wait longer than ever before, and I’m receiving reports of heart attack and stroke victims waiting hours in agony for an ambulance. With taxes rises during a cost-of-living crisis, patients are paying more but, it seems, getting less. I’ve written to our health authorities to raise your concerns but every time I get the same response – there are too few staff, recruitment is down, retention is at crisis point, highly trained staff are leaving in their thousands and the service is at breaking point. There are now 24,000 patients who have been waiting more than two years for an appointment or treatment. I’ve also been contacted by local head teachers across the constituency who are reporting that the pandemic continues to impact both children and school staff. Last week I wrote to the education secretary, Nadhim Zahawi to raise my concerns about the pressure teachers are experiencing. Covid hasn’t gone away and on a daily basis head teachers are trying to manage huge numbers of staff absences when there’s very few supply staff available due to a critical national shortage. Just like health staff, the recruitment and retention of teachers is at an all-time low. If that wasn’t bad enough head teachers are also trying to respond to the high numbers of pupil absences and providing home learning packages via digital technology. Two years ago, teachers’ jobs literally changed overnight and since then there’s been very little understanding or support from the government. According to a recent survey by the National Education Union, one in three teachers in the UK plan to quit the classroom in the next five years due to bureaucracy and huge workloads. Teachers are being paid for far fewer hours than the 46 to 59 hours that in many cases they actually work. The union says class sizes due to the pandemic are increasing, with some schools having to put

I’m also concerned that the relationship between OFSTED and schools has become increasingly toxic, with schools dreading the visit of the inspectorate. School inspections certainly play their part in reassuring parents and carers that their children are receiving high quality education - but the government must look at ways of moving the inspectorate to being more developmental and less judgemental. Teachers say inspections are so focused on box ticking that even a school delivering excellent outcomes can receive a disappointing report. Understandably, teachers can feel overwhelmed when they’re solely responsible for 35 to 40 children. The education secretary needs to take much more seriously the very real issue of teacher stress and burnout. The government wants us to think ‘it’s business

as usual’ but every week I visit schools in my constituency and that’s not what teachers are telling me. From Lancaster to Fleetwood every head teacher is expressing concern about the wellbeing of the children in their care and the wellbeing of staff who are juggling a myriad of complex issues. This has to change. We have to invest more in our children and give their teachers the support they need to help them through, what continues to be, very challenging times. Have you been a victim of crime and if so, how was your experience of reporting the incident and having it followed up? New analysis shows a ‘collapse of confidence’ from crime victims, with a quarter of reported crimes now going unpunished due to the victim not pursuing charges. There is a victims’ crisis at the heart of the criminal justice system, and we need to urgently restore faith in law and order by delivering a system that the public deserve. In 2012/13, there was one neighbourhood officer or PCSO for every 1,650 residents. Now police staffing cuts have left the public with only ONE neighbourhood officer for every 2,400 residents. That means an effective cut of one-third in the presence of neighbourhood police within local areas. In some areas there is only one neighbourhood officer or PCSO for over 5,000 people.

Faith in the criminal justice system to deliver for victims is a pillar of a civilized country.

WYRE FLOOD FORUM Last month I reported on the proceedings of the Wyre Flood Forum held on Fri 17th March with half the members present in body and spirit in the Wyre Council Civic Centre and the remainder at home, in the office or, in the case of one officer, on the floor above where we were sitting, probably with a mug of tea behind the screen. I understand that zoom has its benefits but the sooner we all meet up in person the better I believe. I mentioned in my last report that we were joined by three visitors from West Lancashire who had heard of our group and wished to see for themselves what we got up to. I am pleased to report that Rachel Crompton, the Lancashire County Council officer responsible for flood risk management, has been in touch with me to say that our visitors were most impressed by our purpose and the
way we got to the bottom of problems and were hoping to replicate our forum in their local district council. We are very pleased that our efforts are appreciated. I also reported that the Garstang flood storage basin had again been in the wars. One of the two gates that rise from beneath the water (where they normally lie) to form a barrier preventing excess river water from draining too quickly downstream had, unfortunately, suffered a mechanical failure necessitating a thorough inspection. The process is to slip what are known as ‘stop logs’ down the grooves before and aft of the gate and then ‘de-water’ the chamber to allow engineers to inspect the machinery. When I last looked shortly before Easter the gate was still in the water and I would estimate six ‘stop logs’ upstream of the gate were in place. In fact they are not logs in the

We had intended to raise £1,000 to fund 100 Dignity Packs, but having smashed through that target we powered on to reach the magnificent total of £2,000. This means we have supported the production of 200 Dignity Packs, so 200 young women and girls in West Pokot, Kenya can be supported to continue their education and not have to miss out during their monthly menstruation cycle. Orange the World A new initiative this year is ‘Orange the World’ in which Soroptimists want to highlight the issue of violence against women and girls on the 25th of every month. Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent, and devastating human rights violations in our world today and is a threat to millions of girls and women online and offline. It affects women regardless of their age, background, or level of education. This violence takes many forms, including physical, sexual, or psychological violence, as well as economic abuse and exploitation. So, the 25th of each month will be Orange Day - a day to raise awareness and take action to end violence against women and girls. We’ll be doing activities on these days, wearing our orange and hopefully raising awareness – watch out for our social media announcements.

SOROPTIMISTS (cont) AGM Our AGM was as always, a wonderful event. We did have to forego our customary meal beforehand but we didn’t let that dampen our spirits. We took this opportunity to hold the welcoming/induction ceremonies for our new members which had been put on hold over the last 2 years. It’s always thrilling to formally welcome new members, hear a bit about them and then to light a candle of friendship for them. We had to follow the official AGM requirements, hearing reports from the clubs’ officials and voting in our new leadership team for the coming year and of course, President Kathy. A lively debate was held to choose our charity for the new club year and this is to be voted on during our first business meeting of the new Soroptimist year.
Finally, we held our candle ceremony, which is a lovely tradition of the club, highlighting the work the officials do on behalf of the members and bringing the members together to acknowledge the hard work we do in the club and the organisation as a whole. Petitions Our petition of the month is ‘Make public sexual harassment a criminal offence in the UK’ and can be found at Change.org. It’s hard to believe people have to be told this is not acceptable behaviour in this day and age. Ukraine And finally, our sad but necessary statement on Ukraine: Soroptimist International stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, who have found themselves in an unwanted conflict. This conflict is in clear violation of international law, which forbids acts of aggression, the UN Charter and human rights for all. International humanitarian and human rights law must be upheld; the targeting of civilians constitutes a crime against humanity and a war crime. Together, we call for an immediate halt to hostilities, for all troops to be withdrawn, and for good-faith, peaceful, diplomatic negotiations to begin in a neutral territory. CARTER’S CHARITY SCHOOL We are looking forward to the next month with lots of plans for our outdoor areas taking shape. The bee trail has been planted and work on planting fruit and vegetables in the allotment is well under way. We can’t wait to have some produce to sell in the summer term again. Our eco-warriors worked in partnership with a local tree surgeon on the tidying and redesigning of our trees and bushes with our nature garden looking completely different. The chopped off pieces have not been wasted as we have created a fabulous natural habitat for wildlife for all of us to observe and enjoy. The lovely cut logs very nearly ended up in Mr Hassett’s wood burner at home but they will be stored and seasoned to use in our own campfires when the days get cooler. The end of this month sees our Y5 and Y6 singers head to the Manchester Arena to join the Young Voices Concerts. We have missed
taking part over the last couple of years but can’t wait for our cultural city adventure. We are very much looking forward to adding our own jubilee celebration with a street party taking place for children and families alike. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for more info – but we will be hosting another Carter’s Bake Off Challenge so save those calories for that day! We’ve received news that we will be welcoming 28 new starters to our Reception class in September. This term is very much one of excitement for all in the build up to the start of the school year. All elements of the early years foundation stage curriculum can be taught outdoors in the forest. Children learn a vast range of skills which form the building blocks for learning when they start school. They also learn to be curious and develop independence, confidence and resilience – all essential life skills! School Links Being on a primary school site has obvious advantages - not just a seamless transition into school but also the opportunities to take part in whole school events such as worship, fund-raising events, sports day, the nativity performance plus many more. The pre-school works very closely with reception class so by the time they start school, they know the classroom and the
reception teacher and staff very well. In fact, there is nothing more I enjoy in the day than taking a break from onerous tasks and wandering down to our pre-school room to talk to some of our youngest pupils. Our older pupils get a similar joy from spending time in pre-school and we encourage the growth of these important relationships. Come and Visit Us! BUT I DON’T FEEL STRESSED… We live in strange times. The best part of the last two and a half years have been disturbing, odd and, yes, stressful. And the stress continues but let us not dwell on the world at large, we can leave that
for others to worry about. I like the stoic philosophy which in a nutshell recognises the world is a chaotic place and there is precious little an individual can do to change it so concentrate your energy on the things you can change – your diet, your relationships, your work life balance etc. Make everything you can a positive choice for you and those around you. Be a good person. If we all do that the world becomes a better place. But let’s go back to ‘stress’. An overused word that is often misunderstood and I hear this misunderstanding from my patients who use the phrase I have chosen for the title of this piece, ‘but I don’t feel stressed’. Stress is not a state of mind, it is not an emotion. Stress is perceived by your body in a very primitive way. Your body interprets stress as a threat to your life and creates a physical response to the stress to preserve

BUT I DON’T FEEL STRESSED (cont) your life. This is the fright, flight fight response. This physical response increases your heart rate and shunts blood away from your gut to your muscles to prepare you for action, to your brain to ensure you are alert and even makes your palms sweat so you can grip a weapon or climb an obstacle better. When we respond to the stress with some form of physical action it actually helps the stress hormones to dissipate and return our body to a normal, relaxed resting state. And therein lies the problem, most modern stressors do not require an aggressive physical response: An unexpected doubling of our heating bills, a car briefly swerving towards us on the drive into work or a late bus making us miss an important appointment. All of these provoke just the same physical response as a threat to your life but we do not respond physically to them. This leads to a build up of stress hormones in our body
which lead to chronic problems like irritable bowel syndrome, poor sleep and low energy. Therefore the best thing you can do to cope with stress is to do some vigorous exercise. Our body is a moving machine and thrives when we use it properly. FOREST OF BOWLAND AONB The Festival Bowland Calendar for May May is traditionally the month when activity in the wildlife world is going at full pace. If heritage and art appeal too, the Festival Bowland programme has lots to offer. The Lancashire branch of Butterfly Conservation will be leading a walk along the Langden Valley in the heart of Bowland on Wed 4th May, when they’ll be on the search for the beautiful green hairstreak butterfly and the amazing day flying emperor moth.
A large number of our Lion members assisted with the popular Garstang Tractor Run which had been rescheduled because of Covid restrictions and was held on Sun 3rd April. We are about to move into our busy summer season for stewarding and car parking for many of our local events including the Children’s Festival, Great Eccleston and the two Scorton Shows. Approval has been given to move our bonfire circle to a site slightly further away from the new build development by the High Street car park. Club members will do this work in early July and it should improve future safety and offer even better viewing of our annual spectacular display. FOREST OF BOWLAND AONB (cont) Garstang Walking Festival runs until Sun 8th May and is packed with walks for all ages and abilities. It’s a great way to explore the countryside around Wyre – including lots of opportunities in the Forest of Bowland. Nordic walkers can practise their skills in the lovely surroundings of the Lune Millennium Park near Lancaster on Sun 8th May and for those who enjoy a little history, chartered civil engineer, Chris Hudson, will be exploring the medieval bridges of the Ribble Valley online on Tues 10th May. Bumblebees will be making an appearance both virtually and actually – fingers crossed – as the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust and the Forest of Bowland AONB combine to offer an online beginners’ session over lunchtime on Wed 18th May, followed by an optional ‘spotter’ walk at Gisburn Forest early in June. The programme is back with Butterfly
Conservation again on the evening of the Tues 26th May, this time online. Great for anyone unable to make it along to the walk. And for those of a creative nature, the annual Maiden Bridge Gallery exhibition starts on Sat 28th May. I hope to organise a members’ meeting (paid only) next month to discuss a new committee. GARSTANG ARTS CENTRE
The Queen’s platinum jubilee celebrations are coming to Garstang on Sat 4th June. Join the Giant Jubilee picnic from 11:00am – 3:00pm in the family area at Millennium Green. Pack up a picnic and bring the whole family for a fun day out. Organised by Wyre Council, there will be free performances of Alice in Wonderland throughout the day at 11:00am, 1:00pm and 2:30pm, plus there will be fun games for everyone to enjoy. FLOWER ARRANGING CLUB Join us for an enjoyable evening with NAFAS demonstration of floral art. We meet on the second Wednesday of each month from March - Dec, 7:30pm. Visitors welcome - £5. Art Exhibition Daniel Sharples has already caused considerable interest and admiration for his paintings of the Garstang area over the last few weeks. Daniel works primarily in oil and is inspired by the places and people around him. Plein air painting is increasingly becoming his main passion and he has been seen at his easel out and about painting stunning pictures for his exhibition. There will be a preview on Sun 8th May, 2:00pm - 4:00pm and the exhibition will run
