in the village is invited to get involved, families, businesses and community groups to construct a scarecrow and display it in their garden or window for the Festival week. In honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee the theme will be ‘1952 – 2022’ celebrating anything from the past 70 years! Maybe famous events, celebrities, TV shows, movies, books... anything that celebrates the era since the Queen’s coronation. The winners will be announced on gala day, so get your thinking caps on for your creation.
As you are all aware the last two years have been difficult for all and there has been no galas. However we have some exciting news: there will be a 2022 gala on Sat 9th July!
Get Involved Would you like to help us in any way prior to or on the day? Would you like to take part in entertaining us on the field this year? Please get in touch. e: committee@hambletongala.co.uk www.hambletongala.co.uk fb: Hambleton gala
After much deliberation and thought, the committee, as small as we may be (eight members in total) has decided that we will work as hard as we can to give the community what they want. This will be a struggle but we endeavour to do it. ‘Will it be bigger and better?’ we hear you say. Well unfortunately, due to the lack of volunteers and helpers, that remains to be seen. We have decided to scale back this year just to make it happen! If you feel you can help in any way please contact us via the gala Facebook page. We look forward to seeing you all. PILLING ST JOHN’S SEED BANK This year at Pilling St John’s our Eco-Team has been busy creating our very own seed library. We have collected seeds from both our own homes and the school grounds. We have a variety of flowering plants, wildflowers, fruits and vegetables stored in our library. From Mon 14th March our library will be open to borrowers. Borrowers will be given an information leaflet about their chosen plant including interesting facts, growing and harvesting instructions. All we ask is that you let us know how your plants get on. To find out more about our project, the inspiration behind it and for a full list of seeds available please visit the forest schools page of our school website from Mon 14th March. To request seeds please contact Miss Bell via email or by sending in a message with a pupil you know. We hope to hear from you and your green thumbs soon. Happy growing. OVER WYRE ART SOCIETY I’m sure we’ll all be glad to welcome March with longer and brighter days. Good light is important for artwork but we produced some good work when practising figure drawing in January. Once again the members obliged by posing in turn whilst the rest of us made ten minute sketches. Another week’s challenge came from Linda May. How to look for the negative space in an object. This involves, for example, studying the shape of the hole in a doughnut rather than the outside. Some of our weeks allow for free expression in painting or drawing. These are more relaxed afternoons when we can have a chat and a cuppa, get help to finish paintings and let our cares escape. If this sounds tempting then contact me for more details.

HAMBLETON URC At this time of the year the dark, sleepy, cold nights of winter are drawing to a close and spring is starting to awaken the wildlife about us. From out of the darkness of winter nights, the new shoots of life spring up. I hope they bring good news, in many varied forms.
Being a member of this beautiful farming community I am looking forward to observing new lamb’s leaping, chicks wandering, flowers blooming. But we must remember that we humans are just custodians on this planet and it is our duty to care for the natural wonders of it, to protect and nurture what has been placed in to our safekeeping. The colours that we will see again will dazzle our eyes, flutter the beats of our heart, along with taking our breath away at God’s wondrous beauty. Once again we as your church have prayed for each and every member of our community, asking that the love and compassion we share with each other allow us to deliver justice and peace. This includes establishing a future which is bright, beautiful, and a bountiful one for all and not the very few. Do not let the majority of good will, which is being done within our community and beyond be over shadowed by a very minute number of trouble makers, as betrayed with media sources. Good things never make news headlines with current press organisation. Also, let us never forget how short a time we have to enjoy the wonders of our world. As you know, as your church within this community, our outreach philosophy is to be here for you, so if you or a family member or friend are ill in hospital or at home and you feel they may benefit from a visit, then please let us know. This is also open to everyone within our community, regardless of an individuals’ faith or beliefs. If someone is in hospital we are happy to contact the local hospital chaplaincy team, who will arrange the appropriate person to go and have a chat with them. Please do feel free to contact Chris Lamb.

1ST PILLING SCOUT GROUP The boys and girls in our scout group have had a busy time in February. We made snowdrops for the snowdrop festival in Pilling. Beavers made snowy artwork, cubs made paper snowflakes and scouts made an ‘ice fire. These were all on display at the festival in St John the Baptist Church in Pilling. An outside visit by each section to the Archery Barn in Preesall was a great success and several got bulls eyes. All sections are working hard to earn badges and are having great fun.

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE Lack of movement at any age, but particularly as we age, causes our physical and mental health to deteriorate. This process of functional decline, losing muscle mass and stability during movement, is known as the deconditioning syndrome and unfortunately, this can lead to a multitude of medical problems. Falls are more likely, self-confidence can plummet and this can be psychologically distressing. During the Covid pandemic, many people have become more sedentary and I regularly see the effects of this on patient’s physical and mental health. Once some deconditioning has occurred it can feel like an uphill battle to restore normal function – regaining strength (re-conditioning) can often take twice as long as the deconditioning process, but it is possible and the benefits of some extra effort to strengthen our muscles are well worth it. There is good evidence that exercise based on individuals’ abilities, encouraging self-care and group exercise can work well to improve functional status. However, as always, prevention is always better than the cure! So, keeping active or getting active in the best way possible for you is my message for today’s article! At Over Wyre Medical Centre, we are very fortunate in having access to our social prescribers who are able to give practical and proactive advice on a plethora of topics. Getting active to combat loneliness and deconditioning is just one of these. If you would like to be signposted to the social prescribers, the medical centre can refer you so please contact the reception team. Alternatively, the social prescribers are holding a monthly drop-in session called ‘Let’s Connect Over Wyre’ at the Over Wyre Medical Centre in The Front Room every third Tuesday of the month. The next date will be Tues 15th March, 1:00pm - 3:00pm.

A wonderful volunteer, Vincent Edwards, runs a free information and help session covering anything relating to IT and computer access every Friday 2:00pm - 4:00pm in the Front Room at Over Wyre Medical Centre. He can help you overcome any of these difficulties and the feedback I have received about his teaching and input has been very positive. Dr Vicky Simpson t: (01253) 951165

PREESALL FIRE STATION Welcome to our ninth editorial. Recently the crew have been to road traffic collisions, cooking fires, outbuilding fires and assisted Northwest Ambulance Service by gaining entry into properties where needed.
It’s never too late to look at a new challenge. If you have spare time during the week or at the weekend, want to support your community and earn an extra income, being an on-call firefighter could be perfect for you.
All members of the crew live or work within seven minutes of the fire station and respond immediately when their pager sounds.
You can come along to the station on a Monday night between 6:30pm and 8:30pm to ask questions and meet the crew.
Our fire cadet unit has been learning all about pumping water and putting up ladders. They are also looking at safety campaigns within Lancashire. Over the next few months they will learn new skills such as cutting up cars, fighting fires, and looking at all the equipment we store on the appliance. As soon as Easter is out of the way we start our summer recruitment campaign again. We have firefighters at Preesall ranging in all ages from 18 years old to 67 years old, 10 male and two female.

PREESALL FLEETWOOD’S (cont) learning environment and a view to rival any school in Lancashire! Have you been up to the top of Preesall Hill? It’s well worth a visit. We are also the only school in the area to have our own mature woodland area where we can deliver forest school sessions to all our pupils; some of our parents remember planting the trees in the school’s tercentenary year in 1995! So why outdoor learning? Children love being outdoors. Being outdoors can have a positive impact on children’s physical and mental health. Children are more likely to engage in active play whilst outdoors and it is also great fun, whatever the weather! We find that through outdoor learning, our pupils develop confidence and self-esteem, independence, emotional resilience and perseverance plus much, much more. These skills then transfer into the classroom into improved cognitive ability, higher academic achievement and
improved memory. Ask any child at Fleetwood’s Charity what they like best about our school and one of the top three guaranteed answers will be – learning in the forest. We are lucky to have a dedicated forest school leader on our staff. Julia Crompton was one of the first people in the country to be trained and there is not a subject in the primary national curriculum or topic that she cannot deliver through a forest session (more on that in the April edition)! All our pupils experience outdoor learning in the forest through the school year and our youngest pupils in pre-school, reception and year 1 have weekly sessions. We even have a welly wall at school to make sure they are always prepared! Last term I saw children taking part in outdoor maths by using natural materials to order lengths and make patterns; cooking chapatis on the fire as part of our

multi-cultural week; exploding volcanos in science, investigating the properties of soil and weaving with willow branches to make a fence. We also have a well-established rural studies area and greenhouse where pupils learn how to grow a wide range of fruit and vegetables. These are made into delicious treats such as jams, crumbles, cordials, soups and much more so cooking is also on the timetable. Again another essential life skill! Our gardening club runs through the summer term; they look after and tend the vegetable beds as well as make our school grounds look beautiful ready for the Wyre in Bloom judges annual visit. We also have an orchard on our sports field on Park Lane, planted last year, with a huge variety of fruit trees donated by our families and people from the local community. Last summer, in addition, we planted areas with
wildflower seeds to encourage bees and butterflies so we are looking forward to seeing them grow in the coming months. We work with the Woodland Trust to ensure we are doing our bit to support tree planting. Last term, some of our pupils planted over 100 hedging plants around what will be a new outdoor prayer garden, designed by the pupils, at the back of school. Both the pre-school and reception/year 1 classrooms have superb outdoor areas which can be accessed by children throughout the day. Staff use natural materials to develop stimulating areas which encourage learning through play. The outdoor area is simply an extension of the indoor classroom, mirroring the key learning objectives of the early years’ curriculum, with the freedom to explore whilst being in the open air.

To help reduce our carbon footprint, in September, we introduced ‘walk to school Wednesdays’ encouraging pupils to meet at Preesall Park to walk to school, instead of being driven. This is also helping to reduce traffic congestion. As we head into the summer months, we hope to expand this to at least another day in the week. What next? We will soon be starting an exciting new project in our school grounds which will be a covered outdoor eco-classroom. This will be a valuable addition to our outdoor classroom areas as it will allow children to access outdoor learning in all weathers. The building will have a living roof which fits perfectly with

CARTERS CHARITY (cont) are still rearing their head but our families, children and staff have been fantastic with resilience, cooperation and understanding. We have just welcomed the deputy lieutenant of Lancashire, Helen Broughton MBE, to officially plant a tree as part of Her Majesty’s platinum jubilee. The children loved the ceremony and the history behind the role and the Queen’s links to Lancashire. As a school, we are committed to the development of all involved in school but also to providing support and opportunity for those training to be teachers, teaching assistants and childcare workers. Currently we have two trainee teachers in two of our classes, one from Edge Hill University and the other from the University of Cumbria. We will be welcoming a couple more before the end of the year. Over the years, we have also been very proactive in supporting apprentices and
have two members of the team studying for further qualifications while working. We have just advertised for another apprentice to join our team for the next couple of years: Nonteaching school vacancies (lancashire.gov. uk) Please call school for further information. We have continued carefully to our return to ‘normal’ with plans for welcoming families into school for parents’ evenings, special events and assemblies. We are also welcoming volunteers back into school so if you are interested in becoming one, please get in touch. We always like to get involved with fun activities, so far this year we’ve joined in with NSPCC Number Day – linking all things maths to help raise funds for such a worthy cause. The NSPCC come into school to support our children, so we always want to give back to support them. We helped raise over £180 by dressing up in number themed non-uniform.

CARTERS CHARITY (cont) We have also been dressing up for World Book Day as our favourite characters. Speaking of books, have you seen our fantastic artwork up in Knott End Library? Our whole school has a real love of reading, with all classes enjoying a daily excerpt from their class read. We also have a very active PTFA ‘Friends of Carter’s’ who are also supporting our schools reading journey by helping to fund new books voted for by classes! We’ve had to postpone Red Nose Day from Fri 18th March to Mon 21st March this year, as we have such a busy week scheduled in school! Years 1 & 2 are having a day trip to Liverpool, learning about The Beatles and the history of Liverpool. We are also welcoming a Viking warrior into school. Years 5 & 6 will hear the telling of Viking sagas, learn to row a Viking longship and find out how they lived, traded and of course, raided! Not to be outdone, Years 3 & 4 will be having a beatbox and rap session earlier in the month, we can’t wait to see how that goes! Year 6 will also be taking part in Bikeability this month; learning important skills for safe riding on the roads. Phew! That’s not all folks, we can’t tell you everything that’s going on in school. We don’t have enough space in the Green Book! You can follow us on Facebook for updates. Want to see what we get up to? Why not give us a call and pop in to see us in action, we can’t think of a better way for prospective families to see what we can offer. HAMBLETON WI
NAAFI CAFE
Hambleton WI continues to flourish and very much looks forward to welcoming new members. An update of our February meeting cannot be given as our meeting date is on the deadline for the March edition of Focus Magazine. However, we have listened to Shirley and Diane before and our stomachs ached with laughter; we have no doubt that their latest presentation of ‘Tales of the Unexpected’ will be any different. We greatly look forward to welcoming them back.
Over Wyre Veterans Meet and Greet
Our next meeting will be on Mon 14th March, 7:30pm at the URC hall with Karen Redmayne. Karen established her own business with the support of the Princes Trust. She designs glass art in addition to running fused glass and jewellery, silver-smithing and stained glass courses in her studio in Higherford. We are a very busy and friendly WI and you can attend at no charge. Why don’t you come along and see for yourself? Linday Foy
PILLING LANE WI At our February meeting we were transported to the USA when Matt and Yvonne Pinner told us about their year long trip across the states in a motorhome. We had previously heard all about their trip from the east coast to the west coast and this time we followed them through the west coast states from San Francisco to New Mexico with a stop off in Las Vegas. We all enjoyed their slides of the magnificent scenery in the national parks and the tales of experiences along the way. Our next meeting at St Oswald’s Hall on Wed 2nd March will start earlier than usual at 7:00pm to allow for discussion about our future, before Denis Muir will persuade us that ‘Laughter is the Best Medicine’ at 7:30pm. As always, if you need more information, please call. Janet Astley 01253 467978
In February, the Over Wyre Veterans Meet and Greet NAAFI Cafe (OWVM&G) met for the first time in almost two years and whilst, unfortunately, it wasn’t the best of attendance, it was almost no more or less than had been expected. There were a few missing who had intimated that they would – in all probability – try to attend but due to unforeseen circumstances they couldn’t. Unfortunately there were only six attendees whereas prior to Covid we had been managing 20 or so. It is hoped that we might get a few more attendees at the next meeting. Despite the poor attendance we still had a good natter, reminisced, had some good laughs, a cup of coffee and a biscuit. We discussed the current situation regarding coming out of lockdown, the situation regarding OWMC still operating mainly telephone consultations also any involvement that may be required

from the ex-service community in Over Wyre civic events such as Remembrance Sunday services, Commonwealth Day, Preesall gala etc. At the latter it was suggested that the group may consider having a gazebo and information stand to try to help any service or ex-servicemen and women with difficulties/ hardship that they may be experiencing. If we can’t help, we should be able to point them in the best direction. Next Meeting Mon 14th Mar, 10:00am - 12 noon Preesall Youth & Community Centre If there are any serving or ex-service personnel, wives, widows and widowers out there who would like to meet others from those categories and miss the banter from their service days then please come along to our next meeting. RSPCA Special Appeals Chico: has found himself looking for a new home after his previous owner was no longer able to give him the care he needed. He is a friendly boy with a laid-back nature. He walks nicely on lead and particularity enjoys spending time off lead in the paddocks where he loves to do zoomies! We don’t think Chico has had much interaction with other dogs as he can seem unsure and not totally comfortable in their presence so we feel he will be better suited to a home where he is

Sea Bank House
A special home for special people Sea Bank House is a residential home for elderly people who are unable to live independently in their own homes. Or philosophy of care is based on the belief that it is the right of any resident in the home to be respected as an individual, and that everyone has the right to be allowed to live as full and active a life as both their mental and physical condition allows. We endeavour to provide an environment which is not only comfortable and homely, but gives the warmth and understanding normally associated with family care but supported by specialist equipment and well trained care staff. Needs are met maintaining personal dignity, privacy and encouraging independence where possible. Activities, passive and active are encouraged throughout the day by trained care staff under the guidance of the Home Manager. Each care plan takes into consideration the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs, in order to create a care plan that is relevant to individuals. Recognising, nurturing and encouraging the residents remaining skills and ability to communicate is or paramount importance to the quality of care given at Sea Bank House.

RSPCA (cont) the only pet. He can be a little grumpy when having his paws touched and nails trimmed so his new adopters need to be mindful of this. Chico is looking for an active home with someone who has previous dog experience, preferably with lurchers and who will help him adapt to life in a new home. Binky & Lydia: Binky (black/white) and Lydia came in via an inspector last year after being removed from a multi-cat household due to poor conditions. When they arrived both cats were very fearful but having each other for company and reassurance meant they were not alone and it helped them settle in easier. Having gained confidence, they are now super friendly and loving cats. They are often found in each other’s company either curled up or playing. They have a lovely bond so we are looking for them to be re-homed together. Whilst at the centre, Binky has required some treatment for her skin which is now being well managed with the use of steroids and a grain free diet. The diet will need to be continued in her new home. However we are hoping that the already low dose of steroids can be weaned down even further once Binky has settled in. They are looking for a quieter home without any other pets or young children. It is unknown if Binky and Lydia have had outdoor access in their previous home however we feel both cats would love to have access to a garden which they can explore. STALMINE PARISH COUNCIL Parish Council Casual Vacancy The parish council is seeking to fill a casual vacancy by co-option following the resignation of Councillor Alan Morton. The person coopted will hold office until the fourth day after the ordinary election of parish councillors in May 2023. Councillors have asked that anyone wishing to apply for the vacancy provide a short letter of application to the clerk. This should outline why you want to become a councillor and what you would bring to the council. Councillors contribute to the work of the council by having a say about the things they care about; putting forward ideas for better services; responding to the needs and views of their residents; seeking the best outcomes for local issues; getting involved in decision making by voting and accepting the corporate view of the council. The council usually meets on the second Tuesday evening every month with meetings lasting about two hours. New Parish Clerk Louise Rowland was appointed as the new clerk at Stalmine-with-Staynall Parish Council in February with Alison May continuing her role as clerk to Preesall Town Council. Woodland Works Tree felling within Stalmine’s woodland recommenced in January and is progressing well. The public are asked to take care when accessing the wood and abide by the notices that have been put in place by the tree surgeons. The Wyre Local Plan Review
Planning Enforcement The council is seeking further clarification from Wyre Council in response to its freedom of information request regarding the level of enforcement over the past three years as the figures do not appear to tally with information already held by the council. Speed Cameras Tendering for average speed cameras along the A588 from Lancaster to Skippool including Stalmine village will commence with Lancashire County Council in mid-February. Once a suitable supplier has been selected work will commence later in the next financial year to install them. The funding for the introduction of the cameras and other safety measures along the A588 comes from the successful application made by Lancashire County Council to the government’s safer roads fund.

The dog exercise area is where dogs are allowed off the lead. However, dogs must be always under their owner’s control. Although all attempts are made to keep the area secure it may not always be entirely so. Gates can be left open and hedges and other barriers may become damaged. Dog Owners If you are a responsible dog owner this section is not for you. Otherwise, this is an appeal to the less responsible owners to please pick up after your dog. There have been several reports of dog mess being left behind on the pavements, a particular issue around the school. If a child treads in dog mess, they can take it into the school. The children sit on the floor - if they sit cross legged, they could play with their shoes. Their hands go to their faces and mouths, all the time spreading the toxic bacteria and making a child very unwell.

of the local plan over the next two years.
Lancashire County Council has spent several weeks investigating and improving issues with the drains in Hambleton, clearing outflows from Kiln Lane and identifying and clearing the problems around Carr Lane, Pauls Lane, and Sandy Lane. To keep up-to-date with flooding issues in Hambleton and Stalmine a full list of current issues and minutes from FLAG, Wyre Flood Forum and Making Space For Water meetings are available on the Hambleton Parish Council website. Meetings are generally held quarterly in the village hall.
Wyre Council declared a climate emergency in July 2019 which was after the original plan was adopted. They are now looking at how mitigating the impact of climate change can be better considered in the local plan. This review could include the consideration of building designs, biodiversity and flood risk management.
The Queens Platinum Jubilee On Thurs 2nd June the council is hosting a celebration event on the park which will culminate in the lighting of one of a chain of beacons that will be lit throughout the commonwealth. WYRE COUNCIL Have your say on Wyre’s Local Plan Wyre Council is inviting residents to have their say on the full review of the borough’s local plan. The consultation is open until Thurs 10th March. A local plan outlines the vision for development in the borough and is reviewed at least every five years. The plan is used to help decide on planning applications and other planning decisions. It acts as a guide to what can be built in the borough and outlines the future patterns of development. The council adopted their local plan in 2019 and are now looking to undertake a full review

Hugely significant step forward for ‘Our New Deal for a Greater Lancashire’ Bold plans to secure a devolution deal for Lancashire have taken a hugely significant step forward after Wyre Council’s councillors endorsed the proposals. Our New Deal for a Greater Lancashire sets out the areas where Lancashire’s council leaders collectively believe more local powers over funding and decision-making could make the biggest difference. The themes identified are around the economy, transport, jobs, skills and the environment. At the meeting of full council in January councillors scrutinised the proposals before unanimously approving all recommendations. Cllr David Henderson, Leader of Wyre Council, said: “Since June all of Lancashire’s 15 council leaders have been working together on these plans which we believe will

Nominations are now being sought for Wyre’s most inspirational young people. If you know a young person who excels in their area, why not nominate them for the Sheraton Trophy?
‘We have a clear and ambitious vision to secure additional powers, decision-making, and significant additional funding which has the potential to transform our county and make a huge difference to the lives of all of our residents and I am looking forward to continuing discussing this matter further with my fellow Lancashire leaders.’ The council considered a joint report which has been prepared for all 15 councils, who will all scrutinise it in the coming weeks. If approved by all councils, the proposals will be taken forward to government. Visit www. lancashire.gov.uk/newdeal to find out more about ‘Our New Deal for a Greater Lancashire’.
Every year, the Mayor of Wyre presents the prestigious Sheraton Trophy to a rising star who has brought pride to the borough as a result of their achievements. The Sheraton Trophy takes its name from HMS Sheraton which was awarded the Freedom of the Borough in recognition of support given to Fleetwood by the crew during the 1977 flood emergency when the ship was visiting the port. Wyre Council wants to hear about young people who have excelled in any walk of life, be it sport, the arts, community work, volunteering or achievement against the odds.

Rapid charging points allow drivers of electric vehicles to fully charge their vehicle in 40 minutes to two hours, depending on the car model. The council is eager to provide electric charging points in its car parks to help the Government meet their target of making all new cars and vans be zero emissions by 2035. The rapid charging points are now in place and ready to use at Rough Lea Road car park – Cleveleys, Custom House Lane – Fleetwood, Thornton Little Theatre and Wheatsheaf Way – Poulton. Fast charging points will also be added to Wyre’s car parks in April 2022 to Marine Hall – Fleetwood, Custom House Lane – Fleetwood, High Street – Garstang, Derby Road East and West – Cleveleys, Civic Centre – Poulton and Quail Holm Road – Knott End. BEN WALLACE MP As I look at the diary for the next few months, thankfully I can look forward to many visits to the local area. Thanks to the successful roll out of the vaccine programme nationally and the continued common sense of local residents, at last we are gradually getting back to some normality. I am looking forward to speaking to residents about their own experiences during the pandemic and finding out how we can learn from it. There is no doubt that the way some
of us work has changed and in some cases these practices may stay. There have been many sad times and challenges during the last couple of years and my thoughts are with anyone who has lost friends and loved ones. I would like to reiterate my thanks to all those who provided essential services and support throughout the pandemic; our armed forces, emergency services and the NHS, along with the countless volunteers who helped with the successful, unprecedented rollout of the vaccine programme. I have heard of many incidents where neighbours supported the elderly and those vulnerable within their communities. For up to date information about Covid, please go to www.gov.uk/coronavirus My mailbag reflects some of the consequences of the pandemic, for example the on-going back log of driving licence applications.

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) Again, my advice is to submit applications giving plenty of time. The other big issue which fills the mailbag is the risk of flooding and our unpredictable Lancashire weather. As I write this, there are storms forecast and I am mindful of the consequences these may have. However, the vast majority of correspondence I am currently receiving is made up of both national and international issues. I never lose focus on the important issues we are facing, whether locally in the constituency or on the international stage. These are challenging times and we must carry on unified. Believe it or not, it is business as usual in Westminster and since leaving the EU, the government has sought continuity for businesses, investors, and consumers in our trading relationship. The Department for International Trade (DIT) set up a new helpline and online service in October,

First of all, as promised, just a quick update on our campaign to get the breast screening unit returned to Fleetwood. It’s clear from your emails that the removal of the breast screening unit from Fleetwood has seriously impacted women in Over Wyre with all of you now having to travel to Lytham or Palatine Road in Blackpool – neither of which are easy to get to, particularly if you don’t drive and are having to rely on public transport.
Are you using a product or service from an advertiser?
CAT SMITH MP (cont) At the time of writing, I’m still in discussions with NHS decision-makers but I’m now confident we’ve persuaded them that the decision to remove the unit was completely wrong and it will be returning in the coming weeks – it’s now just a matter of finding out when it will be back. Keep an eye on my website and social media pages and I’ll let you know what’s happening as soon as it’s confirmed. It’s been a great community campaign to get the breast screening unit back - with women setting up a Facebook page and offering to drive each other to Lytham if they have appointments on the same day. It’s a constant slog to get our voices heard, but the thing I know about Lancashire women is that they never give up – and neither will I! Another example of local community working together was the drive to introduce beach wheelchairs to Fleetwood; a brilliant concept that truly makes our fantastic seaside accessible to everyone along the coast, no matter what level of mobility you have. The wheelchairs are now hugely popular, and I was really delighted to hear the team had won the award for accessibility and exclusivity in this year’s Lancashire Tourism Awards. I submitted an early day motion in the House of Commons to formally congratulate everyone and was delighted to meet up with them all to present a framed copy of the document. Well done to everyone involved including Fleetwood Rotary and Fleetwood Town Council who initially gave the project a grant of more than £7000 which helped get the project off the ground. The wheelchairs are free to use, and you just need to book in to borrow one. There are more details here www.fleetwoodbeachwheelchairs.co.uk – and like every charity, they constantly need financial support to keep going so if you’ve got a few pounds to share they’d really appreciate it.
My mailbag is currently full of people telling me their hospital procedures have been cancelled, sometimes for the third or fourth time. I’ve been shocked to discover that more than 6 million people are on NHS waiting lists, many in pain and distress and unfortunately, we’ve been told this situation is going to get much worse before it gets better. The NHS went into the pandemic with record waiting lists and staff shortages of 100,000. The government has now come up with a plan that sees patients paying more in tax but waiting longer for care. Many older constituents who have paid their taxes for half a century have told me they’re now having to fork out £50 to privately have their ears syringed because the pain is so great, and they’re being told it will be months before they move up the waiting list. I agree

CAT SMITH MP (cont) when they tell me this truly is privatisation by the back door. The last Labour government reduced waiting times from 18 months to 18 weeks. The next Labour government will secure the future of our NHS and provide the staff it needs to treat patients on time. At the time of writing I’m looking forward to visiting Pilling based tractor suppliers Siromer. The family-owned company has been trading in Pilling for over 20 years and employ a local workforce. They are deeply rooted in the local farming and agricultural community and import tractors and agricultural machinery into the UK before distributing them across the country. Have you been watching BBC’s “Kelvin’s Big Farming Adventure?” It’s brilliant! Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher has bought a 129-acre farm in the Peak District and is now trying to make it as a farmer – never having farmed before in his life! Siromer has supplied a

lot of his machinery – not only that but they supplied the tractor as a flat pack and Kelvin built it himself. Brilliant! Congratulations to the team. CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund December was a delightfully busy, colourful, and engaging month though, on occasion, intensely sad as final goodbyes were said to several loyal friends and supporters. We cannot thank everyone enough for their kindness in thinking of others at a difficult time and for generous help and support from many in ways both great and small and from far and near.
Sales at the Christmas pop-up shop, the toy fair and the craft fair at Garstang Art Centre, a kind gift from the Churchtown Bloomers stall at Kirkland Memorial Hall, donations for Trisha’s exquisite and unique painted pebbles at Stairhaven in Galloway and from Garstang Psychic Club’s Christmas event, gifts online from Portsmouth and in person and thoughtful ‘in memorium’ tributes graciously given in lieu of flowers for lost loved ones all came together and added an incredible £2,600 towards screening young people. The festive season also saw many of you buying CRY Christmas cards and calendars or donating through the clothing bank. We’ll let you know how these have helped in future issues of Focus Magazine. Well done to those who support us through the lottery - www.wyrelottery.co.uk/support/cry-thematthew-hesmondhalgh-memorial-fund It raised over £400 throughout the year. It really

CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG (CRY) is a wonderful way to show your support on a regular basis and was so lovely that a couple more of our devotees had little wins just prior to Christmas too! CRY Screening - Sat 5th & Sun 6th Feb At the time of writing, our next screening is entirely filled for the Saturday, though places currently remain available for Sunday 6th. Should all appointments be full by the time you try to book please go to www. testmyheart.org and register your interest in screening. CRY will then inform you by email when places become available in the north west. Fundraising is a valuable activity that keeps these CRY screening events at Garstang taking place each year and we greatly appreciate everyone’s efforts to help us do this. As you can see from this editorial, backing
comes from many friends, family and fantastic followers all over the country and without these funds donated and gathered by the many generous fundraisers Matt’s fund would not have been able to hold the 17 days of screening and saved the many lives that together we have so far. Thank you one and all. If you would like to hold an event in memory of Matt and would like support just get in touch, we’d love to help where we can. Looking forward to what 2022 brings! ROTARY Rotary Event

Sleigh
Unfortunately we had to cancel the 2020 Santa sleigh, but in Dec 2021, Rotary managed to safely stage this outdoor event. Santa rode around the streets of Catterall and Garstang in his illuminated Sleigh greeting children, who heard his elves ringing their bells. On Thurs 18th and Sat 20th Dec Santa greeted everyone from his sleigh with his elves, courtesy of Booths Superstore who allowed him to park in Cherestanc Square. Every year Rotary reviews the route to maximise the opportunity for children to see and meet Santa, promise to be good, of course, and to enjoy an advance gift of sweeties and giving him a thumbs-up. With all the new houses being built in the area, the

ROTARY (cont) route is changing each year. As well as fun for the children, the Santa Sleigh event is an opportunity for Rotary to make collections for local charities and this year we received a total of £1,650, for which we thank the people of Garstang and our visitors for their generosity. This year, half of the collection is for St John’s Hospice and the other half will go to local charities over the course of the year, including donations to seven children’s summer galas around the Garstang area. Rotary 200+ Club Draw The December Garstang Rotary 200+ Club draw took place on Wed 15th Dec 2021. The draw was held at the Best Western Golf Hotel in Garstang attended by 25 members of the Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs of Garstang and Over Wyre. lots of new projects lined up for our 2022/23 year which starts in April 2022. Who are we? We also had a fantastic social meeting where we got to know each other better. Having attracted several new members recently, we haven’t had the right sort of contact time to really get to know each other – so this was a great opportunity. We were able share information on who we all were and our backgrounds and interests. It’s hard to believe what a diverse bunch of women we are. It was also good to remember that the ethos of our organisation is friendship and fun and the ‘getting to know you session’ really underlined this! Making Plans Tues 8th March is International Women’s Day - a global day celebrated annually to commemorate the cultural, political, and socio-economic achievements of women. The theme this year is #BreakTheBias. To mark this, we will start releasing the first batch of our WOW Women interviews on Facebook/ our website. These profile local women who are involved in business, science, technology, engineering or maths, or are pioneers in their field. Please take a look to discover the successful women we have in our community and hopefully the younger female readers will feel inspired to follow their dreams. These profiles represent women who have been/are successful in a male dominated world and there’s nothing stopping the next generation being equally or even more ambitious. Are you or do you know a woman who meets the criteria for these profiles and you feel should be included and celebrated? Contact us and let us know – we’re always happy to talk. Finally a further taster - we have a date to plant our 100 trees to celebrate our centenary year. The wellies are ready and hopefully a local dignitary from Garstang will be coming along to support us on the day. There’s not time to get the report in before the deadline this month but there will be a full run down of the day next month. Regional Update

SOROPTIMISTS (cont) the top tips for the use of social media not everyone’s cup of tea we know - but a fantastic tool to reach a wider audience. Rachel was positive and informative and more importantly – encouraging! I think we’re going to have very happy algorithms from now on and have a much better output – just keep watching. We followed this with a couple of speakers covering Programme Action (PA) projects – The Lip Balm Victim Support project (a lip balm with a help line number on it - small and discreet and very useful for a victim) and Tap Twinning. We will add a fuller report on this project onto our Facebook page and website as it was extremely informative. To note, these two projects will be our regional projects for the year. The PA reports at the meeting help update us on what is happening with current projects and opens up different ones for us to consider and/or support. As clubs we’re not all tied to doing the same project, so throughout the organisation – we’re covering an extremely wide range of projects and issues. Is there something you’re interested in being part of or do you have a particular cause you feel needs championing (that falls within our remit of helping women and children)? You can always contact us to discuss or come along to meetings and get involved – great things happen when women get together! The regional meeting also covered the general business of the combined clubs in the area and dates were pencilled in for our annual Rose Bowl contest – which is hopefully going to be a physical gathering in May and our regional lunch which will be in September. GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS All of our members were saddened to hear the sad news of the death of Dave “Mooch” Cryer who, while not a member, helped our club in several ways including being Santa at the Victorian Evenings and more recently with our Christmas visits to local care homes. Our thoughts are with his family. Donations It was agreed that £200 would be provided to the local girl guide group towards facilitating some future planned trips as the covid restrictions relax. The club is keen to celebrate 50 years of our work in the local community and wish to mark this with a sponsorship project linked to the Children’s Festival and have agreed a sum of £250 for this. Garstang and District Lions continue to provide ongoing support for Fylde Women’s Aid who have a need for new clothing items (babies, small children, ladies and men’s too), new toys, new cosmetics or new toiletries with our collection point being the Resources Centre (the old Liberal Club on Bridge Street). Entry to the draw costs £1 on the cards provided and the winner will be notified by the venue itself - so please look out for the chance to win one. General Our club continues to grow. WYRE FLOOD FORUM As I write, gazing out of my dining room window with the sun streaming through watching the tree tops gently swaying and the lawn looking as it would benefit from a cut, it would be easy to pack the memory of the trio of Storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin in the drawer with the rest of local history and other goings on. This article is meant to reflect on the more long term issues facing residents in Wyre affected by not only events that grab the headlines but are embedded structural and infrastructure problems that our administrators and engineers face every day of their working lives. Although the periodic major events have the potential to cause severe damage it is the persistent and less spectacular issues that focus the attention or our professional officers.
slow the waters and is expecting to receive news later this year regarding its application for funding. They work with local farmers to create small ponds, put fences up so livestock can’t trample the river bank and resurface tracks, all of which help the land hold back water and release it more slowly. The Skell has bursts its banks in the past decade and threatened nearby Ripon not to mention damaging Fountains Abbey which sits on its bank. I read about the project in the National Trust spring magazine. If you fancy learning more
There is of course the constant battle to keep the drains and water courses clean and clear and success here is well rewarded when we witness surface water on the roadside for example, pouring into a gully and getting away at speed. If a gully near you does not respond as it should you must report it and the highways team will get on to it immediately. Search ‘Lancashire County Council - report a highway blocked drain’ for same-day action. More long term the aim is to prevent river and surface water getting down the catchment too quickly. The Wyre Rivers Trust has as one of its projects to increase the use of Natural Flood Management (NFM) to capture and Tell them you saw it in the “Green Book”

WYRE FLOOD FORUM (cont) about it just search for the Skell Valley Project or join the National Trust; it’s a good excuse for a day out to explore the Studely Royal Water Garden and the Abbey. I have sent details to Tom Myerscough who is the Wyre River’s Trust officer. In the next edition of the Focus Magazine, I will be able to bring you up to date with events in Wyre after the quarterly flood forum on Thurs 17th March - St Patrick’s Day. Among the matters I have asked to be addressed in the pre-meeting of our technical officers, ‘Making Space For Water’ group, are the flooding of Lancaster Road where it becomes High Street in Garstang and the ongoing flooding of Longmoor Lane Nateby. Come along or watch on line. Contact me for details. Roger Brooks rogerwillimbrooks@outlook.com
