GARSTANG ICE CREAM FESTIVAL

OUT RAWCLIFFE OVER 60’S CLUB

The first ever Garstang Ice Cream Festival will take place on Sun 15th July in Garstang Town Centre on National Ice Cream Day!

Our AGM on the 1st May started with the members sitting down to some delicious hotpot and apple pie paid for by the Club.

It will centre around Garstang High Street, Church Street and Bridge Street, which will all be closed for the duration of the event, providing a safe space for all to enjoy the festivities (and the ice cream).

The Chairman, Mr. John Ireland, welcomed the 38 members who attended, giving a warm welcome to two new members who had turned up on the evening. He thanked everyone who had supported the Club over the last year, but said it had been a sad year due to the loss of three of our members. He mentioned our older, more frail members who no longer are able to come to the meetings or join us on our trips. We do miss them.

Many local ice cream producers will be attending the festival and bringing more ice cream than you can possibly imagine. There will also be some unique hot food vendors, a ‘Made in Lancashire’ food section, live entertainment, competitions and loads of fun and games. We also have vegan ice cream and special doggy ice cream. Follow the news about the event on our website at www.garstangicecreamfestival. co.uk or find us on Facebook. Luke Pollard (01995) 608787

The Treasurer, Jane Webster, presented her report, along with the balance sheets, which were passed around for inspection. Arising from the report it was accepted that there would be an increase in the monthly meeting entry fee, going up from £1 to £2. It was proposed and accepted that at present, no changes would be made regarding the running of the Club and Jane Webster agreed to continue to take on the Secretary’s role. The April trip to Watershed Mill was a success. The next trip on Thurs 31st May will be to the Gordon Rigg Garden Centre in Hebdon Bridge. The coach will set off from Moss Edge at 9:00am and Hambleton at 9:15am. Ten games of dominoes were played and prizes presented to the winners: 1st Vera Redman; 2nd Margaret Williams; 3rd John Horrocks; 4th Tony Simpson; 5th Kathleen Woodman; 6th Bill Teasdale. The booby prize went to Connie Jenkinson. The raffle followed with gifts kindly donated by the members. Mr. Ireland brought the evening to a close, appreciation was expressed for the help given on the night. He thanked everybody for coming and wished all a safe journey home. The next meeting will be on Tues 5th June at 7:00pm. New members very welcome. Jane Webster (Treasurer/Secretary)

WATCH YOUR BACK! This time of year brings me a host of patients who have injured their backs whilst doing the gardening. We sit around all winter and with the first sign of spring dash out to sort the garden out – spend a productive day sorting out the mess, go inside to have our dinner, then seize up. The next day we can barely move and our lower back is in agony and away we go to the osteopath. Yet this is such an easy problem to avoid with a few simple changes to how we do things. The first thing to do is to take a look at all the jobs that are waiting for you in the garden. I can guarantee that there will be some that require you to kneel, some that require standing and others that demand you lift and move things. Step one is to plan a ‘round robin’ of tasks that require different postures and spend

twenty minutes on each job, gradually getting each job completed over several hours. The commonest mistake I see is one of people focussing on one job, such as weeding a flower bed, and starting it and finishing it all in one go – regardless of time. This may mean someone spends several hours kneeling down, leaning over and reaching across the flower bed. Now, if you were a professional gardener and used to such work this would be less of a problem but when you are not used to such work there will be enormous strain placed on your body from maintaining a posture for a long period of time. Pressure through your knees and through your flexed lower back with a double whammy on your lower back from the weight of your upper body reaching across to pull weeds up. The same is true for digging and even more so if most of your life is spent working in a sedentary job. Therefore, the golden rule is to never spend more than twenty minutes on any one job and after twenty minutes switch to another job that requires a different posture. After twenty minutes in your new posture change again, either back to job number one, or to a new job with a different posture again. Of course, this requires a little planning and above all else you must think about your body rather than ignoring it to get a job done. An easy reminder to do this is to set a timer on your phone for twenty minutes and when it goes off you change to job number two, reset the alarm and go again. Step two in preventing injury in the garden is to make sure you do a warm down after you have finished. This can be some simple leg and whole body stretches such as standing, then bending forward to touch your toes with legs kept straight, or gently rolling your shoulders and arms to release all the muscles

that have been working hard. There are a myriad of stretches that are really useful.

‘Don’t think too much, people’, begins the title track of Amelia White’s newest album, ‘The Rhythm of the Rain’. Her smoky vocals deliver a rawness you’d expect from mining that liminal space between grief and joy.

Gardening is a physical activity and our body should be gently warmed up and warmed down afterwards to enable it to reset and recover from the work. It may not be a sport but is using your body in a very strenuous way so please stretch it afterwards. An Epsom salts bath is also useful so add that into your post gardening routine once a week. You can even apply Magnesium oil to any aching muscles and this will also help them recover. And if the worst comes to the worst there is always your local osteopath to help you out – and if it is me, I will also tell you how to prevent future trouble, the question is…will you heed my advice? Nick Tofalos

Her last full-length release, ‘Home Sweet Hotel’, landed some killer reviews, like a top country pick in the Telegraph. She played Maverick, Summertyne and Platform Festivals. What separates Amelia White from most other songwriters in the Americana genre is her details. Like a short story writer steeped in the gothic humidity of the backroads, she illuminates the ordinary. There’s a catchy melodic laziness to her rock and roll, an afternoon drive in the country, the top down, bare legs up on the dash, singing along to your favourite song. White has had TV and film placements, record deals and cuts by some of the finest artists in the Americana world, but for her the success is in the doing. She is a rock and roll soothsayer, an East Nashville Cassandra with an Americana gospel shout thicker than the paper-thin illusion of fame and money. ‘Rhythm of the Rain’ is a late afternoon storm, a sky on the verge of cracking as wide open as Amelia White’s heart. And she’s with us at Garstang Unplugged, The Kenlis Arms, Ray Lane, Barnacre, Garstang, PR3 1GD on Thurs 21st June, from 8:30pm. Tickets are £10, on the door, through our website or by reservation on (01995) 602795. The monthly Singer’s Night will be on Wed 27th June from 8:00pm. It’s free and all are welcome. www.ameliawhite.com garstangunplugged.com Don Moore

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES

Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?

Dr Finlay Sutton

If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.

Brenda’s Testimonial

Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

GARSTANG PAINTING GROUP Half way through the year with a really excellent range of demonstrations and workshops behind us we continue to go from strength to strength both in membership and ability. On Sat 2nd June we have to collect our paintings (those which have not sold ) from the Garstang Art Centre following the Jean Grange Exhibition at the end of May. The winner voted for by the public visitors will be reported next month.

June’s practical activities start with a demonstration of pastel work by Susan Frye entitled ‘Cat and Dog’ for members only and slightly different from last months demonstration called ‘Tiger’! However another string to our bow (or medium experience)! On Sat 30th June we will be handing in our entries for the Painting Group Exhibition which will include many previously displayed works of art for visitors to enjoy and possibly buy (a perfect gift for the friend who has everything) so do not miss it! It will only last through the month of July. In the meantime more work is in progress towards our contribution to the Barnacre Festival when paintings will be displayed to help with the decorating of the church from Sat 7th July to Sun 8th July. ST MICHAEL’S LADIES SOCIAL CLUB Ladies were welcomed on a lovely Spring May evening. Plans were made for a trip out to the newly refurbished Pear Tree Restaurant at Ashton Garden Centre on Sat 14th July arriving at 1:00pm. Guests are welcome. Cars will be arranged. Meet at the Village Hall at 12 noon. Several members will be walking in the Gala Procession on Sat 16th June representing the Centenary of the Suffragette movement. Appropriate dress will be worn. Our speaker was David Bettie, a volunteer for the Wild Life Trust and based at the Brockholes Floating Ecology Centre. There are 35 reserves including Winmarleigh Moss which absorbs large amounts of carbon dioxide. David stated that Lancashire has the largest stronghold for the Great Crested Newt and went on to speak about our great friends, the

bees, which we would die without. Darwin named it the Humble Bee, now the popular name is the Bumble Bee. These larger bees can be helped to over winter by half burying a plant pot with a hole in the top allowing a safe nesting site as they like to nest below ground. There can be as many as 40,000 honey bees in colonies and we need them to pollinate fruit, vegetables and flowers. A male honey bee dies after mating. Bees have smelly feet and no knees! The smell they leave on a flower shows it’s been visited and has no pollen. Bees are vegetarians and wasps are carnivores eating other insects. To help bees, in April 2018, the Government banned bee harming pesticides. We can help by planting flowers for bees, blossom trees and also leaving our grass longer, plus

GARSTANG IN BLOOM June is our busiest month of the year. The danger of frost has passed so we can get the summer bedding into the baskets, barrels and troughs, ready for the judging in July. We hope that you will see the difference in Garstang over the next few weeks. Although it’s hard work, it is also enjoyable to create the colourful displays that brighten up the town. Garstang in Bloom is not just about bedding plants though. We also look to use sustainable planting in suitable areas and you will notice

that the front of the large bed at the High St car park is being changed. Instead of the mass planting of bedding by Wyre BC, we’re introducing more shrubs and perennials to this area. We’re also updating the planting down Thomas’s Weind and the picnic site by the river and caring for the new planting at the War Memorial. If you have been watching the series of programmes on BBC 2 about Britain in Bloom you’ll have seen the difference that a team of volunteers can make to a town and the community spirit it generates. If you’re inspired to join our friendly team, come along to our gardening sessions on Wednesday evenings. We meet at the High St car park at 7:00pm. Gill Bergman

LANCASHIRE FIRE & RESCUE N18 Garstang The last month has been quiet for us here at Garstang Fire Station. We’ve been kept busy helping in the community with visits from Beavers, Cubs and Scouts groups to the station. We followed around the colour dash in April, using the fire engine to help clean up at the colour stations and generally supporting the race which did very well in raising funds for cancer care at St. Johns Hospice. We were at Scorton Bikes and Barrows festival, and regular school visits help us get across valuable messages. The one incident of note we have had in our area was a fire in Calder Vale. Sadly this

24

resulted in the total loss of two homes and significant damage to one more. There has been plenty of coverage on this in the local press. We appreciate the help received from colleagues from several other areas in the difficult circumstances. By the time you read this there will be a collage of 40 pictures on the side of the One Stop in the centre of Garstang. The pictures all have the theme ‘Heritage of Beatrix Potter’ and are from seven local primary schools – St Mary and St Michaels, Garstang Community, Nateby, Claughton, St Thomas’s, Scorton and St. Michaels on Wyre. It’s put there just before the Children’s Festival and will stay until the end of the Garstang Arts and Music Festival over the August Bank Holiday.

LANCASHIRE FIRE & RESCUE (cont) Putting things on the side of buildings isn’t official fire service work, so my crew all gladly give their time voluntarily to do this and to support the local primary school children and the community. It’s Scorton Steam Fair in the middle of June and we’ll be there giving tours of our appliance, demonstrations of the equipment we use at road traffic collisions, and to answer any questions you have. Please come and visit us, its always great to show people what we do. Colleagues working on ‘Community Fire Safety’ have been working all around our area with home safety visits for vulnerable residents, supplying smoke alarms and referring to other agencies where specialist help is needed. These services are so valuable, and they’re free! Just call 0800 169 1125 or go to www. lancsfirerescue.org.uk You can do this for yourself, for a family member or anyone you think will benefit. There really isn’t any need to wait until something becomes a real problem. At the first signs of any issues, just let us know and our response is appropriate. Across the county, there’s a new initiative to protect farming communities. Working with Lancashire Constabulary, The Farming Community Network and NFU we’ll be at local auctions, shows and delivering details door-to-door. This is a great opportunity to give us and yourselves a head start for an incident on your farm. We do a home safety visit, we record water sources, access for vehicles, things to watch out for and things to protect. It’s an immensely valuable service and again it’s free. To be at the top of the list for a visit, just email my colleague richardholden@ lancsfirerescue.org.uk or Lorraine

Ellwood, Lancashire Constabulary’s Rural and Wildlife Co-ordinator on (01772) 413935 or email Lorraine.ellwood@lancashire. pnn.police.uk On Sun 10th June our colleagues in Preesall have the first ‘Preesall Fire 10k’, an organised race from the slipway at Knott End. Using the sea wall out of Knott End towards Pilling, and Pilling Lane and the sea wall back it’s raising money for ‘The Firefighters Charity’. It’s a scenic course, there’s chip timing, prizes for best times and entry is on www. fyldecoastrunners.com/events If there’s any spaces left, you can enter on the day at Preesall Fire Station from 8:00am. The flat course is great for a personal best! As part of our recruitment plan, two newly qualified firefighters have joined us on the fire engine. Being retained is a big commitment,

European Unions Are you a soft Brexiteer or a hard Remainer?

We still need more local people to complete our crew, especially if you can be available for call out within five minutes of our station, during the daytime or on the weekend.

Whatever your views, come along to ‘European Unions: Some Special (Musical) Relationships’, celebrated by David Greenwood, at the next meeting of the Garstang and District Recorded Music Society.

All sorts of people are retained firefighters. Everyone has different reasons for joining and gets different things out of it.

We shall find out that there is a whole lot more to our relations with Europe than customs unions, hard borders and Boris Johnson.

If you’re interested in finding out more, visit our station on our drill night, any Monday (except Bank Holidays) at 7:00pm and ask for me.

CRY (cont) Garstang Ladies NFU and friends for the work they have carried out on our behalf as one of their Charities of the Year, whose dedication has seen £1,100 donated to both Galloways and Matt’s Fund; to the congregation at Inglewhite Congregational church for their warm hospitality and beautiful flowers and to the lovely ‘Chippy Nic’ for completing a very hot and challenging London Marathon raising an amazing £2050. We hope you all had fun organising and taking part in the events.

Festival are still available from ourselves, Team ShazzAnn and several local businesses. They cost £2 each or £10 a book and the numerous prizes are amazing, with the first prize of The Ultimate Garstang High street Hamper worth over £1000. Each and every week in the UK twelve seemingly fit and healthy young people lose their lives to Young Sudden Cardiac Death. A simple ECG that takes minutes to perform can be all that it takes to save a life so all donations sent to CRY with Matthew’s Fund name on it go towards funding CRY heart screenings for young people aged 14-35, at Garstang Community Academy.

Team Matt members are looking forward to holding our regular ‘Huggies’ and ‘Daisies’ tombolas at Catterall Gala and to seeing around sixty hikers complete a mammoth challenge as Team ShazzAnn and friends walk the Yorkshire 3 Peaks on Sat 9th June. We wish each and every one of you all the best and hope that the weather is kind.

POLICE NOTES Summer is fast approaching which for some means days out, long walks and BBQ’s. Whilst you are sat in the garden or doing a spot of gardening please remember to keep front doors and windows locked no matter how warm it gets. Many burglaries are opportunistic, so don’t make it easy for the criminals. And keep keys out of sight, so a would-be burglar can’t reach them through a letterbox and don’t hide a spare key under the doormat or a plant pot. Make sure you lock your garage, if you have one – especially if it also has a door into the house and fit a lock to any sheds or other outbuildings. Many homeowners will go into their garages to retrieve gardening items and at the end of the day forget to lock it back up again. Over the past few weeks when the weather has been nice, Garstang Police have received numerous complaints regarding youths acting in an anti-social manner at the Weir near Brockside in Bilsborrow and the area of Garstang Golf Club where the River Wyre meets the River Calder. All the complaints suggest the youths are jumping in the water and then threatening innocent members of the public when they are approached about the litter being left, bad language and general poor behaviour. This is a polite request to ALL parents to ensure their children are aware of the dangers of swimming in these areas and the likely repercussions if approached by the landowners of the property. Enjoy the weather, and keep yourself and your home safe. Please like us on Facebook - Garstang and Over Wyre Police. The Team are posting regular updates, appeals and question and answer sessions held by the inspector. Garstang and Over Wyre Neighbourhood Policing Team

Frances, who lives in the Kendal area, says ‘I need to paint, I love the colour and inspiration I find around me. I am grounded by our rich, sometimes dour, but real landscape, bones of structure showing everywhere, eroded and weathered, scratchily showing its beauty. We meet every Monday (except Bank Holidays) at 1:30pm. On the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month there will be piano accompaniment, but on the 2nd and 4th (& 5th) Mondays we will sing along to CDs/ computer. Dates will be on The Arts Centre noticeboard.

Everyone is welcome. Experienced or beginner we will support you! There will also be tea and biscuits! Contact Kate Crook 07759 659 004 Needlework Group

LANCASTER SINGERS Summer Concerts and Workshop Heroes and Villains Sat 9th June 7:30pm in Giggleswick School Chapel and Sun 10th June at 7:30pm in the Ashton Memorial, Williamson Park, Lancaster. Lancaster Singers are pushing the boundary this summer as we focus on some of the more colourful characters from history, stage and literature. Some of those lovable rogues that we condemn in public (but secretly aspire to, behind closed doors?) such as Captain Hook, Mac the Knife and Darby Kelly will make their appearance. The repertoire also includes some wellknown favourites such as Handel’s ‘Zadok the Priest’, Dibdin’s ‘Tom Bowling’ (arranged by our own accompanist, Ian Tate) and Whitacre’s ‘When David Heard’, a reflection on a father’s loss of his son. A concert with this title wouldn’t be complete without The Beach Boys’ ‘Heroes and Villains’ and, moving from the sublime to the…we arrive, for good measure, at Gilbert and Sullivans’ ‘A Policeman’s Lot’. Some rousing Verdi Choruses complete the eclectic line up that is sure to leave you reflecting about which camp you belong to! Directed, heroically, by Duncan Lloyd. Tickets from www.lancastersingers.org Email: tickets@lancastersingers.org or on 07956 924 699.

Choral Voice Workshop Sat 7th July 9:30am - 4:30pm in The Baptist Church, Lancaster. A Choral Vocal Workshop, under the direction of eminent local professional tenor soloist and voice coach Christopher Steele. Following the day’s work, at 3:30pm we will celebrate by performing a free concert of extracts from the Mozart Requiem. A day not to be missed! Full details and prices from www. lancastersingers.org Email: chair@ lancastersingers.org or on 07976 875 586. Great reductions for Friends of Lancaster Singers. A retiring collection will be held, to be split between the St John the Evangelist Church Conservation Trust and Lancaster Singers Orchestra Fund. BEN WALLACE MP As the weather starts to pick up and, I look forward to not only continuing to travel around the Constituency but indeed increase the time spent in Lancashire. Although, at times, London can be very demanding, I never forget the importance of visiting businesses, charities, the emergency services, schools and so the list goes on. I have said it many times but these visits help me find out what is really going on in the Constituency. The condition and safety of local roads is still a major concern to residents as I see from my mailbag. With this in mind, I have recently written to the Transport Minister in support of an application which Lancashire County Council has made to the Safer Roads Fund

to make improvements to the A588 between Lancaster and Skippool. The proposed improvements will provide additional safety engineering measures along the length of the A588 between the Pointer Roundabout in Lancaster and its junction with A585 at Skippool. The Road Safety Foundation has assessed the A588 as the third most dangerous road in Britain, based on the fact that between 2013 and 2015 there were 28 serious crashes along the road. I know the safety of the road is a great concern. The safety engineering measures proposed by Lancashire County Council are intended to reduce the risk of fatal and serious collisions occurring along the route by reducing exposure to hazards and creating a safer environment for all road users. I have had many long term concerns about the

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) A588 and working with the Parish Council’s and County Councillors, John Shedwick and Matthew Salter, I have highlighted many issues. One in particular is the need for a crossing near the Seven Stars Public House. Although initially LCC did not look on this favourably, I will keep highlighting the need. The issue of pavement parking is a great concern to many of you and I have recently raised a number of specific cases of pavement parking with the Police and the County Council. Pavement parking means that pedestrians suffering from mobility issues, blindness and people with prams are often forced to walk on roads. This is clearly unacceptable and obstruction is of course a Police matter. Improving access for disabled people has always been a key priority for the Government and I understand it is set to make an announcement regarding pavement parking

later this year and I will follow progress on this closely. More broadly, the Government has already taken steps to make it easier for Councils to tackle pavement parking. I have received a number of representations about the new Salmon and Sea Trout protection byelaws which have been proposed by the Environment Agency. I understand that between August and October last year the Environment Agency consulted on how salmon fisheries can be better managed to protect salmon stocks. As a result of the consultation responses which the Environment Agency received they have developed the proposed new byelaws. Having read the proposed new byelaws I understand that locally the new regulations will mean that from this year all salmon caught from the River Lune, River Wyre or River Calder must be released.

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) I have put forward Constituent’s Concerns and will wait for a response. Although the constituents who contacted me are broadly in support of measures to protect the salmon population, they have highlighted a number of highly specific, local concerns based on their knowledge of our rivers. I have asked for these comments to be taken on board by the Environment Agency. An extremely welcome break to Parliamentary business is when Local Gala Queens come to the Commons for a visit. Recently I have welcomed Phoebe Lyons, Poulton’s Gala Queen and Beth Armer, St Michael’s Gala Queen, and I will be seeing Isobel Wilkinson, Churchtown Festival Rose Queen, very shortly.

Planning and development continue to be of major concern to residents and I always advise people to have their say on development by giving the Local Planning Authority (Wyre Council) their views. I continue to represent constituents by voicing their concerns, keeping up to date with Wyre’s Plan and I will have spoken at the plan hearing by the time this is published. A representative from my Great Eccleston Office recently attended a presentation at Catterall Village Hall concerning a proposed development on land off Calder House Lane, Bowgreave in order to gauge opinion and local concerns. I have many constituency days planned over the summer and I look forward to meeting as many constituents as possible. GARSTANG GARDENING CLUB

Lead the family on a merry dance to Scorton Steam this Fathers’ Day weekend, and see a team of JCB diggers doing ‘Strictly’! There may be no sequins or glitter ball but turn on the music, and these heavyweight machines can dance.

There are several spare seats on a coach trip being organised to two popular North West gardens next month. Thurs 7th June will see a visit to both Ness Botanic Gardens and Briarfield Gardens both in Neston.

Their choreographed routines, featuring intricate lifts and graceful turns, are this year’s main arena headline act as the J.C. Balls & Sons Dancing Diggers make their Scorton Steam debut.

At Ness the ornamental gardens cover 46 acres and have superb collections of Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Camellias, Cherries and Heathers, Herbaceous Borders, a Rock Garden, Water Gardens and Wild Flower Meadows. An optional guided tour is included with the booking.

Their supporting cast for what will be the 14th Scorton Steam gathering, which is one of the North West’s biggest annual steam fests, is a collection of more than 600 vehicles of all vintages, shapes and sizes.

At Briarfield Gardens, in June/July herbaceous flowers complement lilies and roses. This is a riotous time in the garden with bold colours and evocative perfumes and the vegetables and soft fruit are in full production.

On top of that there is lawnmower racing, a fairground, crafts, live music, beer tent, food and shopping stalls all spread over 30 acres, making Scorton Steam the perfect family day out, especially given its location off the A6 just 15 minutes from either Junction 32 or 33 of M6.

Meet on Windsor Road (opposite the Library) at 9:00am. The coach should return to Garstang about 5:30pm to 6:00pm.

Scorton Steam opens daily at 9:00am but visitors can camp from Friday to Sunday night. At night, Scorton changes from a carnival to a festival vibe with illuminated vehicle displays, licensed bar, food and music.

Price: £29 (includes coach travel, entry and optional guided tour of Ness Botanic Gardens and entry to Briarfield Garden with included afternoon tea and cake). RHS members will receive a £5 discount if card is shown at Ness. For more info contact Liz Bertenshaw or Ian Budgen (01995) 600445.

We have made a donation of £200 to MIND (the Mental Health charity) who had organised a sponsored walk to raise funds for this worthy cause.

We are still collecting for the Fylde Women’s Aid Central Office for distribution to their various centres in the region. If you have any items to donate of new clothes ( babies, small children or ladies ); new toys, new cosmetic or new toiletry items then our collection point is the Resource Centre (the offices of the old Liberal Club) on Bridge Street.

The Lions sponsored the local Youth Cricket Team for £100 and a similar donation will also be provided for Garstang Hockey Club. A donation has also been agreed to support a local senior friendship group which meets at the Cricket Club and had previously been run and funded by Age Concern. The Lions provided monies to assist the unfortunate families who were badly affected by the recent house fires in Calder Vale - this was a quick response made for a local emergency and to help towards their

CAT SMITH MP Help me plant a tree to mark The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy! At the time of writing this, the sun is belting through my office window and outside the plants and trees are bursting into leaf and flower – I hope it’s still sunny by the time you read this! Unfortunately in some parts of the world very little is bursting into life due to massive deforestation. Trees are being cut down to be used for building or sold as fuel (sometimes in the form of charcoal or timber), while cleared land is used as pasture for livestock and plantation. The effects of deforestation can be devastating. The most dramatic impact is a loss of habitat for millions of species. Eighty percent of Earth’s land animals and plants

live in forests, and many cannot survive the deforestation that destroys their homes. This is why the Queen has launched The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy (QCC). This is a project to create a network of forest conservation initiatives across all 53 Commonwealth countries to mark Her Majesty’s lifetime’s service to the Commonwealth. The scheme was launched at the 2015 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. The QCC presents the opportunity to unite the whole Commonwealth family and save one of the world’s most important natural habitats – forests. In my capacity as an MP I’ve been offered the opportunity to plant a tree in my constituency to celebrate The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy. The tree (a Silver Birch, Rowan or Hazel) will be provided free of charge by The Woodland Trust. If there is a suitable site in Pilling, Preesall or Knott End for me to help plant one of these trees and you would like me to pursue this on behalf of the town then please do contact me. The trees will be sent out in autumn and guidance will be provided on how to plant and nurture them. I look forward to hearing from you! Universal Credit (UC) I want to remind you that if you are currently receiving working tax credit, everyone in Over Wyre will be moved over to the new system of Universal Credit in July. As you know there have been big problems during this crossover period. The Government has introduced UC to make the welfare system simpler by replacing six benefits and credits into a single monthly payment if you are on a low income or out of work. It can include support for the costs of housing, children and childcare, as well as support for disabled people and carers. Universal Credit merges Income support,

CAT SMITH MP (cont) Income related jobseeker’s allowance, Income related employment support allowance, Housing benefit, Working tax credit and Child tax credit. I’ve been contacted by the Citizen’s Advice Bureau who are concerned Universal Credit could risk adding to the financial instability of low-income workers - with those who are self-employed likely to come under the most pressure. The charity has released two new reports on Universal Credit, examining the impact of work allowance cuts on people’s budgets, and why its design can leave self-employed workers at a financial disadvantage. Citizens Advice analysis shows a selfemployed worker who receives Universal Credit could be worse off by £630 a year compared to an employee on the benefit, even if their year-end earnings are identical. The report highlights issues with the Minimum Income Floor, a rule that assumes everyone claiming Universal Credit who has been selfemployed for a year or more is earning the National Minimum Wage (NMW). If they earn less than the NMW one month, their Universal Credit payment won’t make up the difference. But if their monthly earnings go over the NMW, their benefit payment will be reduced accordingly. The charity says this design flaw is unfair and risks causing financial hardship as self-employed workers often earn different amounts from one month to the next. If you have any concerns or worries then please contact me. Preesall Fire 10k Good luck to everyone taking part in the first ever Preesall Fire 10k on Sun 10th June at 10:00am starting from the ferry slipway at Knott End. The run is being hosted by Fylde Coast

It now provides a modern day service enhancing the health and wellbeing of the whole fire community. The everyday heroes of the UK fire community face traumatic life and death situations. The Fire Fighters Charity supports them whether injured, ill or in need of psychological support. Entry into the event is open to everyone of all abilities as long as you are aged over 15 on the day of the race. Included will be bespoke medals and chip timing and the run will take place along the picturesque coastal path. GARSTANG MEDICAL PRACTICE A day in the life of a Nurse Practitioner in General Practice I work as part of a team of 3 (soon to be 4) Nurse Practitioners within Garstang Medical Practice.

CROSSWORD (ans p59)

54

My day starts at 8:00am when I switch on my computer followed by a quick trip into reception to switch the kettle on – coffee is necessary for a productive day! My first appointment is at 8:30am which gives me half an hour to check my emails and any outstanding tasks I need to do. This helps me map out my day looking at the schedule for the sessions. My morning surgery continues until 12:00 noon. Nurse Practitioners function much like a GP. The types of patients that are seen and treated can vary greatly from day to day. However, certain conditions are seen regularly at different times of the year i.e. flu or hayfever. Nurse Practitioners can assess, diagnose, prescribe, order and interpret investigations and refer patients for ongoing treatment. Nurse Practitioners work independently but Across 1. GARSTANG MEDICAL (cont) have access to a GP at all times. The training for a Nurse Practitioner is fairly intense. I’m not sure I would like to go through it again. There are strict criteria for access to a nurse practitioner degree programme. Primary Care GP Surgeries employ Nurse Practitioners to enhance patient care and enable same day access, ensuring patients are seen in a safe and timely manner for acute and minor illness. My main role is first contact consultations i.e. health matters that the patient feels has to be seen today such as acute illnesses like coughs, colds, sore throats, minor injuries, aches/pains but I can also manage most patient problems presented which can be complicated with some long term health conditions such as diabetes or COPD. Occasionally I ask the doctors to give some advice in my consultations or I will make a patient an appointment with one of the doctors if I am unsure of the problem and how it should be managed/treated. Myself and my colleagues are very well supported in our roles by the GPs.

Finally, the end of the shift is nearing and that much needed second wind is in full effect. The latter part of the day is the most ideal time to catch up on any loose strings such as paperwork, prescriptions etc. If all goes as planned then the working day is done by 6:00pm. Regardless of whether or not everything went as planned or you found yourself in the weeds, the ultimate goal is to provide quality care to our patients and Nurse Practitioners have an obligation to their patients to do so by educating them about their issues so they are informed. When you stand to make an impact as big as the role of that as a Nurse Practitioner, a day in the life could not be more rewarding as there is an abundance of opportunity to positively impact on the lives of so many. Martin McDonald - Nurse Practitioner Garstang Medical Practice

After surgery and phone calls are finished I check my various electronic inboxes for laboratory results and clinical letters and annotate them with any further actions required so reception staff can tell the patients when they ring in for the results. I will try and complete any referrals to hospitals/outside agencies and send off specimens before lunch at 1:00pm. I will also check my emails and send replies. The period before lunch is also the time I catch up with my colleagues and discuss any complicated patient consultations. The afternoon surgery starts at 2:00pm and follows a similar pattern to the morning surgery.

LANCS COMMUNITY TRANSPORT Like many Councils across the country, Lancashire County Council continues to face unprecedented financial challenges. We are committed to providing the best services we can to the people of Lancashire, particularly to the most vulnerable in our communities. However, the Council’s financial position remains extremely challenging, with a forecasted funding gap of £144m in 2021/22. Because of this, we still need to make some difficult decisions in order to make further savings. Community transport in Lancashire is provided for eligible people who are not able to use mainstream public transport. Community transport includes Dial-a-Ride, group transport, community car schemes, day trips and volunteering opportunities. In January the County Council’s cabinet agreed to consult on proposals to reduce funding by a third for community transport in
