GARSTANG AND DISTRICT LIONS Donations We have made a donation of £200 to MIND (the Mental Health charity) who had organised a sponsored walk to raise funds for this worthy cause. The Lions sponsored the local Youth Cricket Team for £100 and a similar donation will also be provided for Garstang Hockey Club. A donation has also been agreed to support a local senior friendship group which meets at the Cricket Club and had previously been run and funded by Age Concern. The Lions provided monies to assist the unfortunate families who were badly affected by the recent house fires in Calder Vale - this was a quick response made for a local emergency and to help towards their immediate needs.
We are still collecting for the Fylde Women’s Aid Central Office for distribution to their various centres in the region. If you have any items to donate of new clothes ( babies, small children or ladies ); new toys, new cosmetic or new toiletry items then our collection point is the Resource Centre (the offices of the old Liberal Club) on Bridge Street. Events The sponsored slimming event is still ongoing. The final check on who has lost the most pounds will be done later with all of the proceeds raised to be donated to local charities. Several members of the Garstang Lions club were Course Stewards for the Garstang Colour Dash on Sun 22nd April - this was a highly successful event with a large numbers of participants raising monies for St John’s Hospice. As usual there will be a large number of Lions helping in some capacity including Stewards and Marshals for the Garstang Children’s Festival on Mon 28th May. We are about to enter the peak season for Lions supporting local events through either organising car parking or acting as Stewards or Marshals. These include, in the next two months, the Catterall Gala on Sat 2nd June, Scorton Steam on Sat 16th & Sun 17th June plus the Great Eccleston Show on Sat 14th & Sun 15th July. If you fancy joining us , then our vibrant Lions Club will make you most welcome. If you are interested then further information is on the web site at www.garstanglions. co.uk You can just speak to any member or come along to our meeting held on the third Tuesday of the month in the Royal Oak at 8:00pm. They are now looking for someone to spearhead the team and devote a bit of time to leading Preesall Brownies into the future. Is that someone you? The right candidate will lead a fabulous, hard working team who put the girls at the centre of all they do. Weekly meetings, outings and camps provide the opportunity to introduce young girls to a range of experiences that promotes the Girl Guiding UK ethos of giving girls space to be themselves, whatever

that entails. You are limited only by your imagination - or the imagination of the girls! Just by being a part of their lives you will motivate, inspire and have the opportunity to develop confidence and a variety of life skills in young girls from the village and the surrounding areas. Perhaps you were a Brownie yourself, your daughter has attended or you have never been involved in Guiding before - it doesn’t matter! Full training and support will be provided initially and throughout your contribution as a volunteer. For more information about Guiding please take at look at our website at wwwgirlguiding.org. uk or feel free to contact me for a pressure free chat to talk about how you can help the village Brownies. GARSTANG ICE CREAM FESTIVAL
The Story so Far
The first ever Garstang Ice Cream Festival will take place on Sun 15th July in Garstang Town Centre on National Ice Cream Day!
Last month the railway held its first AGM with changes to the Committee, It has been noticed that other Heritage railways are taking an interest in us and look forward to assisting us in any way they can. We have also been interviewed on Radio Lancashire and membership is on the increase. We are waiting for a reply from the owners of the track bed between Fordstone Bridge and Whinny Lane. Our thanks to Lynda Woodhouse and Robert Drobny for their help and to the following Railways: Apedale (Staffordshire) and Festiniog Railway (Wales).
It will centre around Garstang High Street, Church Street and Bridge Street, which will all be closed for the duration of the event, providing a safe space for all to enjoy the festivities (and the ice cream). Many local ice cream producers will be attending the festival and bringing more ice cream than you can possibly imagine. There will also be some unique hot food vendors, a ‘Made in Lancashire’ food section, live entertainment, competitions and loads of fun and games. We also have vegan ice cream and special doggy ice cream.
Also thank you to the Girls of Dawn’s cafe for their support.
Follow the news about the event on our website at www.garstangicecreamfestival. co.uk or find us on Facebook.

OWSAC Over Wyre Social & Activity Club St Oswald’s Parish Church The Over Wyre Social and Activity Club have just been awarded £1000 from the Walney Island Extension Community Fund. We are very pleased as this will enable us to continue to at least 2020 and will provide materials and the cost of speakers, tutors and any other activities we undertake. The Story So Far It’s just coming up to a year since some members of Pilling Lane (Preesall) WI created the above club, to alleviate loneliness in our local area. Loneliness is a big issue in our area as there are many elderly people who have lost a partner or who cannot get out and about. Initially we applied for funding from the Coop local community causes and we were
successful. We continue to be grateful for all the extra support given to us by our local CoOp. The club is held monthly at St Oswald’s Church Hall in Preesall. This enabled us to get started and at the first meeting we had over 30 people come to find out what it was all about. It is open to all adults, both men and women. In the year our membership has gone from strength to strength as we now have 60 members. During a three month period we hold a musical afternoon, where the members love to join in and sing; we have a creative meeting with a range of activities and finally we have an afternoon where someone will come a talk about a subject or demonstrate a skill, from learning about Gilbert and Sullivan to learning how to create one pot meals. At Christmas time we held a party with

OWSAC (cont) crackers and Christmas presents for each member and a tea. The helpers all dressed up as elves and Sue Sporton (saxophonist) provided the music. We try and give everyone a variety of interesting things to do and chat about. We have noticed that since joining many of them have made friends or renewed old friendships and are now going to other clubs and groups. We initially didn’t charge as the costs came out of the funding from the Co-op, but many of the members wanted to contribute something so we agreed they could donate towards the cost of the tea and cakes. We can’t thank Orsted enough for their generous donation and all I can say is ‘watch this space’. Yes You Can Paint A Brush and Cuppa session is casual, relaxing and lots of fun. No art experience is
necessary. Come along and be entertained by the talented instructors with step-by step instructions and take home your very own one-of-a-kind artwork that you will be proud to say ‘Yeah, I painted that!’ Come and join us for a fun afternoon at the Knott End Methodist Church Hall on Mon 4th June 2:00pm - 4:00pm. Everyone is welcome regardless of age. All materials and refreshments will be provided. Price £10 per person. Arranged by OWSAC, Brush and Tipple. co.uk and the Co-Op. FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES
Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?
Dr Finlay Sutton
If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.
Brenda’s Testimonial
Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

CARTER’S CHARITY NEWS As usual, learning at Carter’s is much more than the classroom and books. We pride ourselves on our use of all the wonderful space we have at our disposal. Lots of classes continue to spend time working on the beach and the shoreline. Our fab environment provides a rich resource for learning in Science, Art, Maths and English along with many more curriculum aspects. Events planned over the next month or so include our Sports’ Day (this year with a Commonwealth Games theme), Y6 children having adventures at Hothersall Lodge, lots of special lunches (we have served up to 230 people on some days), a whole school curriculum project on the wonderful book ‘The Sea Swallow’ and lots of welcome sessions for the twenty seven little darlings who we will welcome to our Reception class in September.
We are grateful to the manager and staff at Preesall Co-Op who have forged a wonderful partnership with ourselves in supporting our work on Healthy Living and Fairtrade. They have also supported us on our Walk to School day and our Sports Day. Partnerships like this give our children a real sense of community. We are always mindful of the health and wellbeing of our children and are always looking at ways to support the whole child and not just the academic aspects. Without a stable, secure and content base for learning and development, children may struggle to reach and stretch their potential. This term sees the newest addition to our staff team - Honey. Honey is a 2 yr old cockapoo who has been trained along with seven members of staff in supporting learners. She is fluffy, gentle and friendly. The children absolutely adore her, and she loves

LANCASHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE N33 Preesall
at Preesall Fire Station.
While there’s definitely a few ‘seasonal trends’ for us, you never can tell what’s next here
The last month has had a steady mixture of work. We’ve been called to fire alarms in private houses, one at a nursing home and one school. We’ve supported NW Ambulance by gaining entry at several properties for them, and there’s been one house fire, probably started by an electrical appliance in the cellar. We put out that fire immediately on arrival, and colleagues from Bispham and Blackpool helped us with valuable support, while the Ambulance service treated occupiers for the effects of smoke inhalation.
On a horse rescue, specialist crews came from Fleetwood (large animal rescue) and St. Anne’s (rope rescue specialists) to help deal with a traumatic experience for the horse as efficiently and smoothly as possible. With the size and location of our area, the Control Centre that takes 999 calls keeps us nearby when at all possible, but this month we were called to help at Calder Vale where a house fire coupled with the remote location meant two houses were completely lost to fire, and a third received substantial damage. The crews there in the critical first stages did a fantastic job in difficult circumstances to stop the fire spreading to many more houses. There’s been plenty of our usual events. Our Car Wash, manned by our crew and cadets, was really successful. Thanks again to the Co-Op for use of their car park and all their help.

LANCASHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE The Dementia Café went incredibly well, with a record number of visitors (and importantly there was plenty of cake left for the crew!). We’re really proud of the continuing hard work from our ‘Couch to 5k’ group. Not everyone’s made it this far into the programme, with so many other commitments fighting for their time, but there’s still a dozen amazing people coming every week and making a real difference to their fitness. Colleagues working on ‘Community Fire Safety’ have been working all around our area with home safety visits for vulnerable residents, supplying smoke alarms and referring to other agencies where specialist help is needed. These services are so valuable, and they’re free! Just call 0800 169 1125 or go to www. lancsfirerescue.org.uk You can do this for yourself, for a family member or anyone
you think will benefit. There really isn’t any need to wait until something becomes a real problem. At the first signs of any issues, just let us know and our response is appropriate. Across the county, there’s a new initiative to protect farming communities. Working with Lancashire Constabulary, The Farming Community Network and NFU we’ll be at local auctions, shows and delivering details door-to-door. This is a great opportunity to give us and yourselves a head start for an incident on your farm. We do a ‘home safety visit’, we record water sources, access for vehicles, things to watch out for and things to protect. It’s an immensely valuable service and again it’s free. To be at the top of the list for the visits, just email me on richardholden@ lancsfirerescue.org.uk ACM Richard Holden 1685

POLICE NOTES Summer is fast approaching which for some means days out, long walks and BBQ’s. Whilst you are sat in the garden or doing a spot of gardening please remember to keep front doors and windows locked no matter how warm it gets. Many burglaries are opportunistic, so don’t make it easy for the criminals. And keep keys out of sight, so a would-be burglar can’t reach them through a letterbox and don’t hide a spare key under the doormat or a plant pot. Make sure you lock your garage, if you have one – especially if it also has a door into the house and fit a lock to any sheds or other outbuildings. Many homeowners will go into their garages to retrieve gardening items and at the end of the day forget to lock it back up again. Over the past few weeks when the weather has been nice, Garstang Police have received numerous complaints regarding youths acting in an anti-social manner at the Weir near Brockside in Bilsborrow and the area of Garstang Golf Club where the River Wyre meets the River Calder. All the complaints suggest the youths are jumping in the water and then threatening innocent members of the public when they are approached about the litter being left, bad language and general poor behaviour. This is a polite request to ALL parents to ensure their children are aware of the dangers of swimming in these areas and the likely repercussions if approached by the landowners of the property. Enjoy the weather, and keep yourself and your home safe. Please like us on Facebook - Garstang and Over Wyre Police. The Team are posting regular updates, appeals and question and answer sessions held by the inspector. Garstang and Over Wyre Neighbourhood Policing Team

PILLING BAND Summer is well and truly upon us and the band are in full swing with galas and church events. We have been so lucky with the weather so far so lets’ hope it continues. We had a lovely afternoon in Happy Mount Park and it was really nice to see some local people had come along to listen. By the time this edition of Focus Magazine gets delivered to you all, we will also have taken part in the famous Whit Friday Marches so I will be able to update you on how the band got on next month. During June the band will be at Catterall Gala on Sat 2nd June, Calder Vale Festival on Sat 9th June and Fleetwood Gala on Sat 16th June. The other big event in June for Pilling Band is the annual entertainment competition that is held in Kirkby Lonsdale square. Every year
on Fathers Day - Sun 17th June. The market square in the village is closed to vehicles and set up for a free afternoon of brass bands. Each band marches into the square where they are judged on deportment then they take to the stage and play for around 20minutes. Each band picks their own programme but usually include a march, hymn tune and a solo. The band really enjoy the day at Kirkby Lonsdale and on a sunny day it is a beautiful setting. It would be lovely to see some of you there on the day. The band are always pleased to see new players in the band room and over the last few month we have been pleased to welcome Morgan Winyard on Eb Bass who is studying at Lancaster University and Jim Owen on Euphonium who travels from Clitheroe to come and play with us. It has also been really great to see Trudi Daniells back playing Euphonium. Trudi played at Pilling a number of years ago but had to give up due to work and family commitments so it is brilliant that she has decided to start again. If anyone is thinking I used to play and would like to start again please feel free to get in touch and likewise if you already play a brass instrument it would be great to see you. We rehearse Tuesday and Thursday In Pilling 8:00pm -9.45pm but our MD Steve Hartley appreciates people have work and family commitments so please don’t be put off if you could only come once a week. For more information please see our website www.pilling-band.com or visit our facebook page Pilling Jubilee Silver Band. Emily Duke 07710 983 916

WATCH YOUR BACK! This time of year brings me a host of patients who have injured their backs whilst doing the gardening. We sit around all winter and with the first sign of spring dash out to sort the garden out – spend a productive day sorting out the mess, go inside to have our dinner, then seize up. The next day we can barely move and our lower back is in agony and away we go to the osteopath. Yet this is such an easy problem to avoid with a few simple changes to how we do things. The first thing to do is to take a look at all the jobs that are waiting for you in the garden. I can guarantee that there will be some that require you to kneel, some that require standing and others that demand you lift and move things. Step one is to plan a ‘round robin’ of tasks that require different postures and spend
twenty minutes on each job, gradually getting each job completed over several hours. The commonest mistake I see is one of people focussing on one job, such as weeding a flower bed, and starting it and finishing it all in one go – regardless of time. This may mean someone spends several hours kneeling down, leaning over and reaching across the flower bed. Now, if you were a professional gardener and used to such work this would be less of a problem but when you are not used to such work there will be enormous strain placed on your body from maintaining a posture for a long period of time. Pressure through your knees and through your flexed lower back with a double whammy on your lower back from the weight of your upper body reaching across to pull weeds up. The same is true for digging and even more so if most of your life is spent working in a sedentary job. Therefore, the golden rule is to never spend more than twenty minutes on any one job and after twenty minutes switch to another job that requires a different posture. After twenty minutes in your new posture change again, either back to job number one, or to a new job with a different posture again. Of course, this requires a little planning and above all else you must think about your body rather than ignoring it to get a job done. An easy reminder to do this is to set a timer on your phone for twenty minutes and when it goes off you change to job number two, reset the alarm and go again. Step two in preventing injury in the garden is to make sure you do a warm down after you have finished. This can be some simple leg and whole body stretches such as standing, then bending forward to touch your toes with legs kept straight, or gently rolling your shoulders and arms to release all the muscles

OVER WYRE PROBUS CLUB
that have been working hard. There are a myriad of stretches that are really useful.
The June meetings of the Over Wyre Probus Club will be held on Thurs 7th June and Thurs 21st June when the subject of the talks will be ‘Swiss Travel’ and ‘Cockersands Lighthouse’ respectively.
Gardening is a physical activity and our body should be gently warmed up and warmed down afterwards to enable it to reset and recover from the work. It may not be a sport but is using your body in a very strenuous way so please stretch it afterwards. An Epsom salts bath is also useful so add that into your post gardening routine once a week. You can even apply Magnesium oil to any aching muscles and this will also help them recover. And if the worst comes to the worst there is always your local osteopath to help you out – and if it is me, I will also tell you how to prevent future trouble, the question is…will you heed my advice? Nick Tofalos
Membership of the Club is open to all gentlemen, resident in or adjacent to the Over Wyre district who have fully or partially retired, or are about to retire from professional, business or other similar occupations. Meetings are held on the first and third Thursday in each month at The Shovels Inn at Hambleton. ST AIDAN’S NEWS For most of us, the rise in temperatures and the welcome return of sunny days means good times ahead; however, if you are a Year 11 student it can only mean one thing – the start of the GCSE examination season. As always, I wish every student across the Fylde Coast the very best of luck, whether they are sitting GCSEs, A Levels or internal examinations. GCSE examinations are not the only things that have been happening at Saint Aidan’s this month, however. Students have been heavily involved in other types of competition. Year 7 student, Thomas Whiteside, triumphed in the regional heats of the German Spelling Bee to proceed to the national finals in Cambridge; Year 11 student Harry Rushton was one of only 6,000 (out of 600,000 entries) to be ‘Highly Commended’ in the National Maths Challenge; finally, Year

11 student Hannah Macgregor has qualified for the finals of the Royal International Horse Show. Charity work has been at the forefront of our minds this month. Year 7 students raised £75 for the school we sponsor in Kenya, Happy House, through a cake sale whilst over £200 was sent to Shelter Box, another house charity. Our Non-Uniform Day produced a further £100 each for Cystic Fibrosis and Cancer Research whilst our Fire Cadets helped run a Dementia Café in Preesall. Our next cohort of Duke of Edinburgh Award students conducted their mock expedition in advance of heading into the countryside for a weekend away very soon and Year 9 & 10 students travelled to Manchester for a performance of Blood Brothers. Continuing the dramatic theme, numerous students trod the boards at Rossall to

CAT SMITH MP Help me plant a tree to mark The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy! At the time of writing this, the sun is belting through my office window and outside the plants and trees are bursting into leaf and flower – I hope it’s still sunny by the time you read this! Unfortunately in some parts of the world very little is bursting into life due to massive deforestation. Trees are being cut down to be used for building or sold as fuel (sometimes in the form of charcoal or timber), while cleared land is used as pasture for livestock and plantation. The effects of deforestation can be devastating. The most dramatic impact is a loss of habitat for millions of species. Eighty
percent of Earth’s land animals and plants live in forests, and many cannot survive the deforestation that destroys their homes. This is why the Queen has launched The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy (QCC). This is a project to create a network of forest conservation initiatives across all 53 Commonwealth countries to mark Her Majesty’s lifetime’s service to the Commonwealth. The scheme was launched at the 2015 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. The QCC presents the opportunity to unite the whole Commonwealth family and save one of the world’s most important natural habitats – forests. In my capacity as an MP I’ve been offered the opportunity to plant a tree in my constituency to celebrate The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy. The tree (a Silver Birch, Rowan or Hazel) will be provided

If there is a suitable site in Pilling, Preesall or Knott End for me to help plant one of these trees and you would like me to pursue this on behalf of the town then please do contact me. The trees will be sent out in autumn and guidance will be provided on how to plant and nurture them. I look forward to hearing from you! Universal Credit (UC) I want to remind you that if you are currently receiving working tax credit, everyone in Over Wyre will be moved over to the new system of Universal Credit in July. As you know there have been big problems during this crossover period. The Government has introduced UC to make the welfare system simpler by replacing six benefits and credits into a single monthly
payment if you are on a low income or out of work. It can include support for the costs of housing, children and childcare, as well as support for disabled people and carers. Universal Credit merges Income support, Income related jobseeker’s allowance, Income related employment support allowance, Housing benefit, Working tax credit and Child tax credit. I’ve been contacted by the Citizen’s Advice Bureau who are concerned Universal Credit could risk adding to the financial instability of low-income workers - with those who are self-employed likely to come under the most pressure. The charity has released two new reports on Universal Credit, examining the impact of work allowance cuts on people’s budgets, and why its design can leave self-employed workers at a financial disadvantage.

Sea Bank House
A special home for special people Sea Bank House is a residential home for elderly people who are unable to live independently in their own homes. Or philosophy of care is based on the belief that it is the right of any resident in the home to be respected as an individual, and that everyone has the right to be allowed to live as full and active a life as both their mental and physical condition allows. We endeavour to provide an environment which is not only comfortable and homely, but gives the warmth and understanding normally associated with family care but supported by specialist equipment and well trained care sta. Needs are met maintaining personal dignity, privacy and encouraging independence where possible. Activities, passive and active are encouraged throughout the day by trained care sta under the guidance of the Home Manager. Each care plan takes into consideration the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs, in order to create a care plan that is relevant to individuals. Recognising, nurturing and encouraging the residents remaining skills and ability to communicate is or paramount importance to the quality of care given at Sea Bank House.

CAT SMITH MP (cont) Citizens Advice analysis shows a selfemployed worker who receives Universal Credit could be worse off by £630 a year compared to an employee on the benefit, even if their year-end earnings are identical. The report highlights issues with the Minimum Income Floor, a rule that assumes everyone claiming Universal Credit who has been selfemployed for a year or more is earning the National Minimum Wage (NMW). If they earn less than the NMW one month, their Universal Credit payment won’t make up the difference. But if their monthly earnings go over the NMW, their benefit payment will be reduced accordingly. The charity says this design flaw is unfair and risks causing financial hardship as self-employed workers often earn different amounts from one month to the next. If you have any concerns or worries then please contact me. Preesall Fire 10k Good luck to everyone taking part in the first ever Preesall Fire 10k on Sun 10th June at 10:00am starting from the ferry slipway at Knott End. The run is being hosted by Fylde Coast Runners in aid of The Firefighters Charity. The Charity began by supporting bereaved families of firefighters killed during the Blitz. It now provides a modern day service enhancing the health and wellbeing of the whole fire community. The everyday heroes of the UK fire community face traumatic life and death situations. The Fire Fighters Charity supports them whether injured, ill or in need of psychological support. Entry into the event is open to everyone of all abilities as long as you are aged over 15 on the day of the race. Included will be bespoke medals and chip timing and the run will take

A different sort of warble this month – GDPR. Located in Pilling covering the Over Wyre area Now you’re either going to be saying ‘What on earth is she on about?’, or else ‘Oh no, I’ve had enough of that’, but bear with me! Just in case you don’t know, GDPR is a new set of rules – the General Data Protection Regulation - which came into effect on Fri 25th May. It is designed to give all EU citizens the right to know what data is stored on them and to have it deleted, plus protect them from privacy and data breaches. This is a big topic, so I really don’t intend to try to explain it in just a few hundred words – if you want to know a lot more then there are lots of online guides. Just open up your web browser and type GDPR. But a big strand of the new rules is that companies need to have ‘explicit and informed consent’ in order to use your personal information. As a result, companies and organisations around the world have been contacting customers/users to check they are happy to carry on receiving their emails and letters etc. So this is why I thought it worthy of a quick mention. Many of us gets lots of emails on a regular basis from companies we are not interested in, and sometimes it can be difficult to get removed from the mailing list. The current round of messages is an ideal

Just have a quick read of any of them which arrive saying ‘Urgent action required’, ‘Do you still want to hear from us?’, ‘We’ve updated our privacy policy’, ‘Should we stop sending you updates? If not, act now!’ If they say you will be dropped from their records if you don’t do something then just delete the email and wait for the deluge to slow to a trickle. If any of them really are important eg. your bank, or a club you are an active member of, then follow the instructions they give to keep your details on the mailing list.

The type of emails I am talking about here are from genuine companies or organisations – real places that you’re just not that keen on. If you get any emails from ‘dodgy’ companies, it’s very important that you DO NOT click on any links in the messages. So if in any doubt, just delete. In order to prevent the rubbish building up again in the future, you can take a few steps to help: •
don’t give your email address out to anybody who doesn’t really need it
•
if you need to give your address when doing some online shopping or asking for a brochure etc, always look to see if there is a checkbox for ‘keep me informed’ or something similar, then click to REMOVE the tick
•
never reply to emails when you don’t recognise the sender
•
don’t click on ‘unsubscribe’ unless you are sure it is a genuine company
•
and don’t forget to turn on the spam/junk filter in your email system

We would like to say thank you to the patients that make up our Patient Group and for taking time out to selflessly attend meetings and events and for the work that goes into making a successful PPG. Combined with our OUSTANDING CQC rating we continue to work hard for our patient population. Bowel cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in the UK. Most people diagnosed with bowel cancer are over 60 years old. The NHS runs a national Bowel Cancer Screening Programme for patients aged 60 years old and over. Screening aims to detect bowel cancer at an early stage, in people with no symptoms, when treatment is more likely to be effective. If you are over 60 and have received a testing kit in the post, we strongly recommend you complete it and return it as per the instructions in the pack. The condition and safety of local roads is still a major concern to residents as I see from my mailbag. With this in mind, I have recently written to the Transport Minister in support of an application which Lancashire County Council has made to the Safer Roads Fund to make improvements to the A588 between Lancaster and Skippool. The proposed improvements will provide additional safety engineering measures along the length of the A588 between the Pointer Roundabout in Lancaster and its junction with A585 at Skippool. The Road Safety Foundation has assessed the A588 as the third most dangerous road in Britain, based on the fact that between 2013 and 2015 there were 28 serious crashes along the road. I know the safety of the road is a great concern to all road users. The safety engineering measures proposed by Lancashire County Council are intended to reduce the risk of fatal and serious collisions occurring along the route by reducing exposure to hazards and creating a safer environment for all road users. I have had many long term concerns about the A588 and working with the Parish Council’s and County Councillors, John Shedwick and Matthew Salter, I have been

follow progress on this very closely. More broadly, the Government has already taken steps to make it easier for Councils to tackle pavement parking.
One particular issue is the need for a crossing near the Seven Stars Public House. Although initially LCC did not look on this favourably, I will keep highlighting the need.
I have received a number of representations about the new Salmon and Sea Trout protection byelaws which have been proposed by the Environment Agency.
The issue of pavement parking is a great concern to many of you and I have recently raised a number of specific cases of pavement parking with the Police and the County Council.
I understand that between August and October last year the Environment Agency consulted on how salmon fisheries can be better managed to protect salmon stocks.
Pavement parking means that pedestrians suffering from mobility issues, blindness and people with prams are often forced to walk on roads. This is clearly unacceptable and obstruction is of course a Police matter.
As a result of the consultation responses which the Environment Agency received they have developed the proposed new byelaws.
Improving access for disabled people has always been a key priority for the Government. I understand the Government is set to make an announcement regarding pavement parking later this year and I will

I have put forward Constituent’s Concerns and will wait for a response. Although the constituents who contacted me are broadly in support of measures to protect the salmon population, they have highlighted a number of highly specific, local concerns based on their knowledge of our rivers. I have asked for these comments to be taken on board by the Environment Agency.

An extremely welcome break to Parliamentary business is when Local Gala Queens come to the Commons for a visit. Recently I have welcomed Phoebe Lyons, Poulton’s Gala Queen and Beth Armer, St Michael’s Gala Queen, and I will be seeing Isobel Wilkinson, Churchtown Festival Rose Queen, very shortly. Planning and development continue to be of major concern to residents and I always advise people to have their say on development by giving the Local Planning Authority (Wyre Council) their views. I continue to represent constituents by voicing their concerns, keeping up to date with Wyre’s Plan and I will have spoken at the plan hearing by the time this is published. A representative from my Great Eccleston Office recently attended a presentation at Catterall Village Hall concerning a proposed development on land off Calder House Lane, Bowgreave in order to gauge opinion and local concerns. I have many constituency days planned over the summer and I look forward to meeting as many constituents as possible. 24 HOUR KNIT-A-THON (cont) We need to raise £1500 in total which would allow for the purchase of the defibrillator and also training for people in the community on how to use it. Our Domiciliary Manager, Adam Purnell, has decided he wants to do something spectacular to help us to our target so he has organised a 24-hour Knit-a-Thon. Starting at 2:00pm Fri 8th June and finishing 2:00pm on Sat 9th June Adam will knit large squares which will be sewn together to form a blanket. The blanket will then be raffled off at our annual Garden Party in June. Adam would like to invite anyone who enjoys knitting to join him over the 24 hour period to either knit a square or to help sew them together. Sat 9th June is also ‘World Wide Knit In Public Day’, so Adam is hoping this will help
bring the people of the local community together and help introduce others to the wonderful world of knitting. Check out our Facebook kepplegateltd, for updates.

Our AGM on the 1st May started with the members sitting down to some delicious hotpot and apple pie paid for by the Club.
Do you have a sewing machine in the cupboard and don’t know what to make?
The Chairman, Mr. John Ireland, welcomed the 38 members who attended, giving a warm welcome to two new members who had turned up on the evening. He thanked everyone who had supported the Club over the last year, but said it had been a sad year due to the loss of three of our members. He mentioned our older, more frail members who no longer are able to come to the meetings or join us on our trips. We do miss them. The Treasurer, Jane Webster, presented her report, along with the balance sheets, which were passed around for inspection. Arising from the report it was accepted that there would be an increase in the monthly meeting entry fee, going up from £1 to £2. It was proposed and accepted that at present, no changes would be made regarding the running of the Club and Jane Webster agreed to continue to take on the Secretary’s role. The April trip to Watershed Mill was a success. The next trip on Thurs 31st May will be to the Gordon Rigg Garden Centre in Hebdon Bridge. The coach will set off from Moss Edge at 9:00am and Hambleton at 9:15am. Ten games of dominoes were played and prizes presented to the winners: 1st Vera Redman; 2nd Margaret Williams; 3rd John Horrocks; 4th Tony Simpson; 5th Kathleen Woodman; 6th Bill Teasdale. The booby prize went to Connie Jenkinson. The raffle followed with gifts kindly donated by the members. Mr. Ireland brought the evening to a close, appreciation was expressed for the help given on the night. He thanked everybody for coming and wished all a safe journey home. The next meeting will be on Tues 5th June at 7:00pm. New members very welcome.
Come along to the Preesall Community Centre (behind the Bethel Church) on Fridays from 9:00am to 12:30pm. We have a qualified Instructor. From simple pincushions and tote bags to full sized quilts we will show you how, you will be made most welcome and Tea/coffee and biscuits are available all morning. LANCS COMMUNITY TRANSPORT Consultation
day trips and volunteering opportunities.
Like many Councils across the country, Lancashire County Council continues to face an unprecedented financial challenge due to continued funding cuts by Government, rising costs and rising demand for the services we provide.
On Thurs 18th Jan the County Council’s cabinet agreed to consult on proposals to reduce funding by a third for community transport in Lancashire. This may mean loss, reduction and/or changes to these services including fare increases.
We are committed to providing the best services we can to the people of Lancashire, particularly to the most vulnerable in our communities. However, the Council’s financial position remains extremely challenging, with a forecasted funding gap of £144m in 2021/22. Because of this, we still need to make some difficult decisions in order to make further savings. Community transport in Lancashire is provided for eligible people who are not able to use mainstream public transport. GARSTANG CAMERA CLUB Garstang Camera Club had some success during May in a prestigious local photo competition, The Brownedge Festival. Peter Knight took first place with his image ‘Nuthatch’ and Sheena Ball took second place with her image ‘If You Loved Me You Would Share’.
If you can go on holiday, why can’t your cat?
Moss Side Cottage Cattery is an award winning cattery and small animal boarding, offering 5* accommodation to provide the purrfect holiday home for your pet. Set in a quiet rural location, guests enjoy the views of the pond with resident ducks, squirrels and more!
We only had one full meeting in May which was well attended by members and visitors. Two members gave presentations about recent visits to unusual locations with Ken Harrison showing us wildlife and stories from the Falklands and Robin Shorrock giving us an insight into the wildlife, people and scenery of Tanzania. We had our AGM on Wed 9th May followed by our annual presentation and dinner on the Wed 16th May when the hard fought for winner of the Photographer of the Year Award was announced as Stan Pearson. Stan won the award for three years running until last year when Bill Hansell pushed him into second place. This year fortunes have been reversed with Bill coming second, beaten by just one point! Third place was taken by Peter Knight. The Chairman’s Trophy was won by Lewis Thompson with his image ‘Elephant Eye’ which is shown here.

She found a lampshade making kit on line and decided to have a try at making one. The instructions were very easy to follow and to her surprise had finished her first lampshade within an hour. She reckons she can now put one together in 40 minutes. The lampshades came in all sizes from 20cm to 40cm and have taken over her house, her mother and her sisters’ houses. We were totally enraptured with her craft and quite a few members went home with their own kits (good luck to all of them). Our next meeting at St. Oswald’s Parish Hall is on Wed 6th June at 7:30pm and Alan Banes, a popular speaker, will be giving us a talk on musicals, their music and their history so come along and meet us. All are welcome. Anne Bewes (01253) 811712

Lilly
Diesel
Lilly arrived from another RSPCA centre in the hope of finding a forever home. She adores people and loves to be the centre of attention. She thoroughly enjoys her walks and loves to investigate. She is currently walked on harness and Gencon as she can be strong on the lead.
Diesel is a rabbit that was found abandoned on the street by his previous owner. He is a friendly but mischievous rabbit who would definitely benefit from further handling in his new home. Diesel needs a large double tier hutch with a large attached run. He is possibly ok to live with a neutered female rabbit but they would need to be introduced slowly.
She is very sociable and adores the company of people. She is eager to please and will do anything for a cuddle. Lilly likes the company of familiar dogs on walks but can be unsure

She isn’t keen on being picked up or restrained when she goes to see the vet so plenty of reassurance is needed. She can be affectionate around people and enjoys attention where she will happily come back for more and rub herself up against you, but it really must be on her terms as she can become slightly assertive so will happily tell you if she doesn’t like something! She needs a very patient and supporting owner who understands that she may never be a lap cat. FLEETWOOD FLIERS At the end of April we had success in two competitions. First of all we won through to the finals of the Lancashire Cup, then we won the most prestigious Walking Football Tournament in the country at the home of England’s training facility at St.George`s Park in Staffordshire. It was a very long day out for the team and supporters but very worthwhile in winning after seven hard fought games, two, including both the semi and final, on penalties. The seven men concerned will receive the trophy at half time during the FA Cup Final. The Over Sixties have their monthly event at Heywood Sports Centre. If anyone is interested in taking part in any of our sessions please do contact us. We have to thank our hard working committee for the organisation of all the above events. They put in a lot of time to make sure all the games and sessions are available. Every one
gives their time voluntarily and they deserve a big pat on the back . We still have a women’s only session for the Over 35 on Tuesday evenings. Anyone interested please turn up between 7:00pm 8:00pm. GARSTANG UNPLUGGED ‘Don’t think too much, people’, begins the title track of Amelia White’s album, ‘The Rhythm of the Rain’. Her well-worn smoky vocals deliver a rawness you’d expect from mining that liminal space between grief and joy. Her last release, ‘Home Sweet Hotel’, landed some killer reviews, like a top country pick in the Telegraph. She played Maverick, Summertyne and Platform Festivals. What separates Amelia White from most other songwriters in the Americana genre is her details. Like a short story writer steeped in the gothic humidity of the backroads, she illuminates the ordinary. There’s a catchy melodic laziness to her rock and roll, an afternoon drive in the country, the top down, bare legs up on the dash, singing along to your favourite song. White has had TV and film placements, record deals and cuts by some of the finest
artists in the Americana world, but for her the success is in the doing. She is a rock and roll soothsayer, an East Nashville Cassandra with an Americana gospel shout thicker than the paper-thin illusion of fame and money. ‘Rhythm of the Rain’ is a late afternoon storm, a sky on the verge of cracking as wide open as Amelia White’s heart. And she’s with us at Garstang Unplugged, The Kenlis Arms, Ray Lane, Barnacre, Garstang, PR3 1GD on Thurs 21st June, from 8:30pm. Tickets are £10, on the door, through our website or by reservation on (01995) 602795. The monthly Singer’s Night will be on Wed 27th June from 8:00pm. It’s free and all are welcome. www.ameliawhite.com www.garstangunplugged.com Don Moore

SSRA Stalmine with Association
Staynall
Residents’
Stalmine’s annual scarecrow event takes place this year during the last week of June as usual. No theme this year. Please join in the fun and help make it a good ‘un. No entry forms or fees. Just the fun of planning and making your scarecrows and seeing the others. We have written again to Lancs CC Highways reminding them of the urgent need to resurface Lynwood Drive and have the support of Ben Wallace MP. Watch this space! The SSRA is also planning a second Open Evening where all residents Over Wyre will hear about large planning applications and all matters concerning the ever busy and dangerous A588. This main road through our Over Wyre villages has now been identified as the fourth most dangerous road, not in England but in the UK! Add to that the soon to be Halite traffic, new housing traffic and the possible effects of the proposed new bypass and we could even hit number one! Look out in Focus soon for further information and details. It has been suggested that a large Over Wyre action group is needed, (outside the SSRA), specifically for this. Anyone willing to lead? NB: Our next two meetings are on Wed 6th June and Wed 4th July, 7:00pm at the Seven Stars. For further information on any SSRA details please view our Facebook page or Stalmine Chat or contact Pauline Andrews 07808 058 097, Ann Ralph 07713 852 639, Barry Walsh 07528 031 944 or Peter Swarbrick (01253) 702675.

The new Mayor’s official charities will be the RNLI and the RSPCA. She will also support the Boys’ Brigade. Memorial Prize The late Vivien Taylor is to be honoured after town councillors backed proposals for a trophy in her name.
