We are all looking forward to the various celebrations which will take place in and around Garstang and of course with our families. Our members would like to thank all those who have supported us in our fund raising activities. This year our chosen charity is Rosemere Cancer Care in Preston and we will be once again holding our popular Charity Quiz night in February. We wish you all a very Happy Christmas. KNOTT END & PREESALL IN BLOOM It was a long wait from July to November to find out the results of our entry to North West In Bloom but the result was worth waiting for as we received a Gold award. Obviously the six members of the In Bloom team who attended the awards ceremony in Southport are delighted with the result but we also want to thank those other people

who helped us to achieve this award.

Our thanks go to Brian, our Lengthsman, for all that watering during the hot, dry summer. Also to those residents who allowed us to fill up our watering cans, bottles and all other usable containers from their water supply.

We had plenty of practise with acrylics last month. Julie Nash, a local artist, has given us many tips with a demonstration followed by a day workshop when we painted ‘Wild Seas’.

Thanks to the team at Wyre Borough for helping to keep the villages looking their best and also to those residents who gave us plant and monetary donations. As always our entries in the ‘Neighbourhood’ category were very successful. There are five levels of awards with Level 5 being the highest. St Oswald’s Church, Ash Grove and Knott End Working Men’s Club Bowling Green were all judged as Level 5 and The Willows as Level 4. Congratulations volunteers!

Our new camera and projector enabled us to see her painting on a large screen which is needed now that our numbers have increased. The new equipment was also in use when Judith Farnworth showed us Brusho. This technique involves sprinkling coloured crystals on watercolour paper. It is sprayed with water, then magic! The vibrant tints develop and then a picture can be formed with brush work. Judith also brought numerous cards and her finished paintings to show us. This was very popular and full day workshop was arranged to follow. We had some lovely art books donated by a

PILLING BAND This year, with Remembrance Sunday falling on the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, we were very proud and honoured to be able to take part in four local Remembrance services including Garstang, St Michaels, Pilling and Stalmine. A number of our band also went on to play at services organised by Lancaster University. We are always keen to welcome new members and last month we were very pleased to welcome Kate Marney to the band. Kate has recently moved to the area and used to play for Darwen Band. She has joined the band on Solo Horn. We have vacancies for players so if you used to play and want to start again or you are playing and have moved to the area please get in touch. We can provide instruments so there really is no excuse. Visit www.pillingband.com or our Facebook page for more

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Over Wyre Branch Remembrance Sunday and ‘Battle’s Over’ Event

The unveiling of the new 1914 - 18 plaque went well and was enhanced by the ceramic poppies made by pupils at St. Aidan’s.

What an absolutely brilliant and huge turn-out for the Church Service and the Parade as well as the evening ‘Battle’s Over’ event.

This was followed by a remarkable young person telling the story of his Great Grandfather and his heroics during the First World War which earned him the Victoria Cross.

There were several people who commented they had never seen so many people in the Church and on Parade but I know by standing halfway up the Memorial mount that the crowd was huge. I estimate over 300 people attended. Hopefully it will continue in the same vein next year.

It was a very difficult and emotive thing for someone so young to do in front of the huge gathering but he did it well. His family must be so proud of him. Well done indeed.

The ceremony at the Memorial went well with two serving military personnel reading out the names on the Memorial of those from our community who had been killed in both World Wars.

20

Mounting the Remembrance Wreaths on the Oak posts hasn’t proved to be such a successful venture at the moment but it will and when Jackie and I finished them on Sunday afternoon the Memorial Mound looked spectacular silhouetted against the overcast sky. By the time this article is published we will have achieved the aim.

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION (cont) The evening event saw another huge crowd considering the cold wind – but it was dry. The children who performed on the makeshift stage did their school and families and the community proud. A huge thank you to the Women’s Institute ladies who served the Bovril – it was delicious. Not only do they deserve praise for that but also for their impromptu and unexpected call to go on stage and give a rendering of ‘Jerusalem’. Well done to all. The many acts that provided the entertainment deserve all the praise and accolades that can be bestowed upon them as it could not have been easy up there with a cold wind blowing but I think everyone – and I estimate over 200 – enjoyed it and will be singing the words of ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’ and ‘Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag’ in their sleep.

It was just unfortunate that a lot of people left after the Beacon was lit which must have been a real disappointment to those who had given of their free time to perform but the wind had got up and it had gotten considerably colder. In my view you were all stars and I am sure everyone else will feel the same way. Once again the Preesall and Knott End community have done themselves proud. What a tremendous place to live – I love it. A special thank you must go to the members of the Gala Committee who conducted the road closures at the Mount as well as the barriers and car parking attendants at the evening event. Thank you. Unfortunately it isn’t possible to provide the total Poppy Appeal collection for Over Wyre as the boxes were only collected on the 12th and 13th November with the money

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION (cont) count held on 14th November but there have been a few unexpected donations: £159.41 at the ‘Battle’s Over’ event and St. Aidan’s almost £700 with their knitted Poppies etc and several of the local organisations have donated more than usual for their Poppy Wreaths.

Service person or a member of their family who may be suffering hardship or in need, or you would like more information on the welfare support schemes or membership, please contact either the RBL Contact Centre on 0808 802 8080 or myself.

Preesall and Knott End residents are really a marvellous community who, this week-end in particular, have shown that they care what happens here and long may it last.

At this time of year I would like to wish all who donated to the Poppy Appeal or who have assisted the Over Wyre Royal British Legion in any way a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2019 and may all those who are serving and their families be safe and secure in their duties. Thank You.

For anyone interested the December meeting of the Over Wyre Royal British Legion Branch will take place on Thurs 6th Dec in the Youth Activities Centre (adjacent to the Preesall Playing Fields Car Park) at 2:30pm. The Branch Chairman informs me that we will be having Mince Pies and Mulled Wine as a pre-Christmas treat. Don’t forget - if you know of a Service or ex-

OVER WYRE GARDENING CLUB For the final meeting of 2018 we welcomed back Matthew Smith from Brighter Blooms Nursery in Preston. Matthew’s topic was ‘Tulips Past Till Present’ and he presented a short history of the tulip bulb. Tulips were cultivated during the Ottoman empire and are mentioned as far back as 1000AD. The first record of tulips flowering in Holland is in 1594. Many people with be familiar with the story of ‘Tulip Mania’ which gripped Holland in the early 1600’s when tulip bulbs became the new luxury item and were being bought and sold for outrageous sums. A single bulb could be bought for more than the yearly salary of a skilled craftsman. Inevitably this could not last and in February 1637 the bubble burst creating a situation which is still referred to whenever there is a new financial crisis. However Holland continued as the main source of tulip bulbs and today has approximately 10,000 hectares producing about 3 billion bulbs annually. Reminder to members that the Christmas lunch will be held on Mon 3rd Dec. The next meeting will be the AGM on Mon 18th February. Joyce Wilson (01253) 813519

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES

Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?

Dr Finlay Sutton

If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.

Brenda’s Testimonial

Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE Message from the Practice Manager Macmillan Neighbours Since October, the surgery has been working closely with the Macmillan team from the Windmill Unit at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals to begin to bridge the gap in support for patients with cancer who live in our rural area. Every second Monday of each month Macmillan workers will be on hand to provide a wealth of advice, support and guidance to those with a current or past cancer diagnosis and their family and can be an important part of enhancing a patient journey and recovery through the cancer pathway. In the past this has been based in the Windmill Unit at Blackpool which many patients may feel they are unable to access. Our aim is to bring this service closer to our patients in order that they can access as

much support as they feel they need at their own GP surgery. Macmillan have started a new initiative to bring this support out to rural communities and two of our staff are in the process of becoming ‘Macmillan Neighbours’ to work closely with Macmillan and help deliver this service. As a result, every second Monday of each month Macmillan will be working in the surgery creating an information hub just off the reception area and will be holding a drop in session, initially once a month. This informal session is open to anybody dealing with cancer who wishes to attend and can help with topics such as benefits, grants, buddying and health needs assessments. OVER WYRE MEDICAL (cont) we have had a good turn out so far. The clinical evidence available to GP practices from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) is clear that for the 2018-19 winter season, GP practices should offer: •

The adjuvanted trivalent vaccine (aTIV) for all 65s and over.

The quadrivalent vaccine (QIV) for 18 to 65 year olds at risk, including pregnant women.

Over Wyre Medical Centre has gone to great depths reviewing and even changing our initial Flu vaccine order for the 2018-19 season to ensure these are in line with the evidence-based clinical review. The dates for our next Flu Clinic will be a combined clinic for both over 65’s and 18 to 65 year olds at risk and will take place at Hambleton Branch Surgery on Fri 7th Dec. Christmas & New Year Practice Opening Times The surgery is open as normal from 7:30am - 6:30pm every day over the festive period apart from Tues 25th / Wed 26th Dec and Tues 1st Jan when we will be closed the the bank holidays. Retirement of Dr Lynch It is with a heavy heart that we announce the retirement of Dr Lynch who has worked here since 1987 and his empathy, dedication and professionalism will be missed by all. Notable achievements in Dr Lynch’s 31 years exemplary service to Over Wyre Medical Centre has seen him preside over the Building Project, oversee the Surgery being rated ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC where the rating included Outstanding for Effective and Well Led and Outstanding in all six of the population groups.

within Fylde & Wyre CCG to have received this accolade. Dr Lynch has always had time for his patients and staff, always has a smile and the above results highlight his contribution to the healthcare of Over Wyre. Due to retire in December after 30 years at OWMC, Dr Lynch was recently Highly Commended in the Gazette Doctor of the Year Award 2018. Christmas Message And finally, as we wish Dr Lynch a happy retirement I would like to thank all our patients for their support shown throughout 2018 and wish you and your family a healthy and happy Christmas & New Year. The views and scenery were truly spectacular as we hiked up and down the many steps through the mountains which separate China from Mongolia. We were blown away by the magnitude of this magnificent structure as it snaked its way for thousands of miles in front of and behind us. The challenge was harder than we had anticipated as we walked sections which had very steep ascents and descents with sometimes shear drops on either side. This required the bottom-shuffling technique by some of the group to safely get down and scrambling on all fours to climb up! Some sections were also in a poor state of repair

I have been inspired by conversations with my patients this week so there are two parts to this. The first being to touch upon our community health in, perhaps, its broadest sense and the second being to focus for once on all the things you CAN enjoy at Christmas when it comes to food rather than worrying about what we should not be doing! I had a chat with a couple of patients this week that made both myself and them reflect upon what has happened to our towns. We discussed the death of local shops and how each of these shops provided a living for a family and a couple of other jobs for local people that meant money stayed in our local area. Each of these shops also meant

Are you using a product or service from an advertiser?

COMMUNITY HEALTH (cont) local information could be passed around as people popped in and stood waiting to be served. In fact, they were the glue that held our community together. In tiny Kelbrook in East Lancashire near where I live there were 14 shops in the 1960s. There are none now. We abandoned these shops chasing the myth of convenience and bargains at the superstores. I would love to know what is convenient about needing a car to go shopping ten miles away at an out of town development, stuck in traffic, paying for petrol, taking an hour to get there and back to be faced with a choice of goods that has been decided for us by a group who have only one aim – profit for shareholders. Even new housing developments appear to come with no provision for local shops as we must all use our cars forcing us all onto the congested road network.

We walk in and serve ourselves and even check out ourselves – meanwhile the shops in our villages die off because, apparently their goods are a few pennies more expensive than the cost in time and car ownership that we now require to do anything. Yet whenever I check the supermarkets tell lies about prices and manipulate us into buy one get one free deals that end up thrown in the bin. I saw a product that is less than ten pounds in my shop sold for fifteen in a local supermarket in Garstang but given a red label and a reduced tag down to £13! The sad thing being that we fall for this! And the next step down the line is that we have become so impatient to have everything right now that we are abandoning our high streets in droves to buy online to companies who contribute nothing in tax to our country, drain all our money upwards, pay appalling wages but can get it to us by tomorrow

COMMUNITY HEALTH (cont) morning. Have we really become so impatient for everything? Okay, I could go on but you get the drift so let me move onto this joyous festive season and what we can thoroughly enjoy with no guilt. First on the list is butter, closely followed by cheese – as far as I’m concerned cheese is a health food so enjoy it. Just limit the crackers that you may be tempted to have with it and have a glass of red wine or port with it (it lowers your blood pressure!) If you want to indulge in mince pies make sure you add cream to it. Yes that’s right, add cream! We need to balance carbohydrates with fats and protein and cream will help make this tasty treat a more balanced pleasure. To be honest, this goes for any desserts. Make sure all veg has an oil added to it as this provides balance and aids absorption of nutrients. Olive oil is best or butter of course.

38

Above all, never forget that time in the kitchen is never wasted time so make all your food from raw ingredients. It tastes better, is more satisfying and fun (I am definitely in the ‘Floyd on Food’ school of having a glass of wine by your side as you cook) and you know exactly what has gone into it. Great chefs always look to buy the best quality ingredients they can afford as opposed to the cheapest we can find. Looking for better quality in the long run means our farms and communities can improve their standards – always looking for cheap takes us into a race to the bottom, a race that negatively affects us all. So come on people, let us raise the standards as we raise our glasses this year. In addition, I wish you all a happy and very Merry Christmas and peace, joy and good health in the New Year. BEN WALLACE MP I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and peaceful Christmas. I personally look forward to this special time of year and spending time with my family here in Lancashire. There are many throughout the constituency and indeed the country who cannot be with their loved ones over the holiday period. Having served myself in the Armed Forces, I know what it is like to be parted from your loved ones at Christmas and my thoughts are with all Forces personnel who are serving overseas or will not be able to go home over the holiday period. I would also like to thank our amazing emergency services who keep us safe all year round. At this special time our thoughts go to all from the NHS, Police, Fire Service

and all agencies and volunteers who look after our safety and well-being. My thoughts and best wishes are with all who are working over the festive period. I am extremely proud to be a Lancashire MP, especially looking back on how the County remembered the centenary of the end of the First World War. It was heart-warming to see how local communities came together from all age groups to remember the sacrifice made by so many. I was particularly pleased to see schools throughout the constituency staging special assemblies and looking into the history of the local community in relation to the Great War. I have said it many times but, we must never forget the sacrifice a whole generation made so that we may live in peace. There seems to be worrying increase in scams and doorstep crime in the run-up to Christmas. If you would like any advice on

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) this issue please visit: www.lancashire. gov.uk/consumer-advice/scams-anddoorstepcrime/ Another issue which concerns me greatly, related to scams and doorstep crime, is the increasing risk of internet scams and phishing. Government advice states: do not give out private information (such as bank details or passwords), reply to text messages, download attachments or click on any links in emails if you’re not sure they are genuine. As always my mailbag and inbox is filled with a great variety of issues both local and national. It is important I know the issues which concern you in order for me to represent you effectively in Westminster and locally. With this in mind I welcome as many opinions from constituents as possible. I believe communication is key and that is why I always encourage constituents to get in touch.

If I can be of any assistance to you please ring my Office at the House of Commons on 02072 195 804 or my Constituency Office on (01995) 672977, email me at wallaceb@ parliament.uk or write to me at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA. Ben Wallace MP

ST AIDAN’S NEWS the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate and visited such poignant locations as Ypres, Passchendaele, Thiepval and Tyne Cot. The experience was extremely moving and will stay with each of the students and staff for years to come.

As we marked the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice at the end of the First World War, I am pleased to say that Saint Aidan’s was able to play its part in marking this milestone. During the October half-term, 36 students from Years 9 to 11 were able to visit the battlefields of Belgium and Northern France as part of a three-day tour. They laid wreaths at three sites, took part in

In a similar vein, our students took over The Villa restaurant at Wrea Green for a special Armistice-themed evening. Our students designed the menu, prepared and cooked the food and served over 100 guests. The food was inspired by the countries who fought on the Western Front and included Chicken Chasseur and Black Forest Gateaux. The special guests for the evening were local British Legion representatives Bill and Jackie Burn and over £300 was raised on the evening for the Poppy Appeal. In addition to this fund-raising, we have been selling fabric poppies made by students in school. We hope that the final total for the British Legion’s appeal will be close to £700. Finally, continuing this Armistice theme, our Technology Faculty constructed a cross and decorated it with a cascade of poppies, reminiscent of that seen at the Tower of London four years ago, out of recycled plastic bottles. This has formed the centrepiece of our Remembrance services in school. Other events this month have included a Year 9 visit to the National Computing Museum and our school’s own Fireworks Display. Equally exciting was the handover, from the builders, of our new school refectory. This new catering facility has been nearly six months in construction and now opens up many new possibilities for our students at break and lunch. We look forward to moving into it very soon. One final event for your diary: our Christmas Fair takes place on Sat 8th Dec between 11:00am and 1:00pm at school. There will be

CAT SMITH MP As I write I’ve bought my first box of mince pies and I’m looking forward to a quiet five minutes to indulge in a bit of Christmas cheer – I might be waiting a while! This year has been life changing with the addition of baby Eli who is coming up to five months old - and is now well used to accompanying me to events across the constituency. He’s helped me to mark the arrival of a new defibrillator in Preesall, visited schools in Winmarleigh, Fleetwood and Lancaster, he’s helped me eat cake at various events marking The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning – Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer, and been to fire stations, churches, charity shop openings

and events to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. It’s just a pity all this activity doesn’t encourage him to sleep a bit longer through the night! As well as becoming a mum it’s been a busy political year. My team and I have sent out over 6,000 emails and letters either responding to constituents or writing on their behalf to local authorities, agencies and the Government. In particular we’ve been successful in helping constituents with disabilities to fight efforts to remove their disability benefits. More than 70% of appeals against the removal of Personal Independence Payments have been successful. We’ve also been involved in supporting constituents struggling with the Universal Credit. Lobbying of Government has led to changes which limit the harm caused.

CAT SMITH MP (cont) Most people in receipt of Universal Credit are receiving in-work benefits and I’ve dealt with a high number of cases of constituents on low incomes and zero hour contracts being unable to meet the most basic of their needs – struggling to keep a roof over their heads and being able to feed their families. Many have been referred to food banks. I’m aware access to food banks in Over Wyre is limited. If this is a problem for you then please get in touch. Email me on cat. smith.mp@parliament.uk or call my office on (01253) 490440. The beginning of the year saw huge concern over cancelled hospital appointments and operations due to the winter crisis - and the knock on effect of this was felt way into the summer. I’ve continued to lobby the Government to provide more funding in the autumn to allow hospitals to plan more

effectively for its busiest time of the year. We’ve had some big environmental issues to tackle with fracking and gas storage being of huge concern in the constituency. I am one of five Lancashire MPs who collectively in November wrote to the Energy Secretary to call for a halt in fracking following so many worrying earth tremors. This is in addition to the regular letters I write myself highlighting the damage being caused. Labour has set out plans for energy that are ambitious, will create hundreds of thousands of jobs and will make Britain the only developed country outside Scandinavia to be on track to meet our climate change obligations. By 2030 we’re committed to creating a sevenfold increase in offshore windfarms and a tripling of solar power, enabling nearly 20m

homes to be powered by wind and solar.

Our November meeting was an enjoyable get together with 30 members attending.

By 2030 we would double the number of onshore windfarms. Our programme of investment and transformation to achieve a 60% reduction in emissions by 2030 would create over 400,000 skilled jobs - a Green Jobs Revolution that would help tackle climate change, provide sustainable energy for the future and create skilled jobs in every nation and region of the UK. There is no bigger threat facing humanity than climate change. Let’s create a safer future for our children and grandchildren.

A minutes silence was taken in remembrance of member Sheila Castle who passed away on Mon 5th Nov. She will be sadly missed. 20 games of dominoes were played and prizes presented to the winners : 1st Kathleen Lawrenson, 2nd Kathleen Woodman, 3rd Peggy Carter, 4th Vera Redman, 5th Jane Webster, 6th John Higginson. The booby price went to Ron Holford. Refreshments were served, followed by the raffle, gifts kindly donated by the members.

On a much lighter note, I hope this festive season brings you all the opportunity of spending time with the people who matter to you and I wish you all a very happy Christmas.

Our Autumn Tints October trip was a lovely day out. The views and autumnal colours were a sight to see. The high tea at Crooklands was enjoyed by all. Unfortunately the trip was the last one of the year, but we can all look forward to next year’s trips.

DOG WALKING IN PILLING

RSPCA

Do you enjoy a walk with your dog? Many people in Pilling visit the New Community Field for a regular stroll along the footpaths and the trim trail. In order to keep dog mess under control, dogs must be kept on a lead along these paths.

Animal Appeals

We have plans to create an exercise area on the field, where dogs can run free and we are now looking for your feedback. The area for exercise will be fenced off to allow dogs to run free and we are hoping to put a path through it. Do we need to provide any other facilities for you and your pet? Please send comments to katrinambell@ hotmail.com Forthcoming Fundraising Event The Houghton Weavers in Concert, Mon 18th Feb. Tickets available from me. Katrina Bell (01253) 790649

Tyson Tyson is an energetic boy who came into the Centre due to his owner’s ill health. He adores people and wants to be the centre of attention. He requires an understanding home as he has health problems that require lifelong medication. This will be discussed further with staff. Please don’t be put off by this as he has so much love to give. Tyson thoroughly enjoys his walks and likes to investigate everything. He is currently walked on a harness and lead and is well mannered. He is very sociable and enjoys the company

RSPCA (cont) of other dogs on walks therefore we feel he may be suited to a multi-dog household with a careful introduction. Tyson has a great temperament but would only be suited to a home with older children due to his excitable nature. He is such a loving boy with a heart of gold and deserves a second chance in a perfect home. Pierre Pierre is a sweet boy who is looking for someone who will help to build up his confidence after finding himself in RSPCA care due to concerns for his welfare. Pierre is still getting used to cattery life so is a bit shy but with plenty of reassurance, he is gaining in confidence. He will do anything for tasty treats and is very affectionate, happily spending time having a fuss and cuddles with staff. Pierre may take a little bit of time to feel comfortable in his new environment so his new family must be understanding and give him time to come around in his own time and give him the space and reassurance that he may need. Previous cat experience and a quieter home is preferred without young children. Mice We have a number of mice of various ages and sexes on the lookout for new homes.

CRY Cardiac Risk in the Young The Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund Have you ever set about a task with great fervour only for a single line of thought to completely knock you out of kilter and off track? Today it’s one of those days. It was my intention to regale tales to you of all those wonderful exploits that have occurred this year in memory of our dearest Matt - to offer you an end of year report and extend our grateful thanks. But in an instant my best intentions were shaken. Perhaps it’s the stories of remembrance that the BBC aired this morning when folks at the Cenotaph talked of the impact of the loss of friends, comrades and family that brought on this melancholy transition or maybe it’s the inescapable fact that another year that Matt will not see is fast approaching - I don’t know.

So, although I have not been able to put my original thoughts into words I hope that all who have journeyed with us this year will accept this simple, but heartfelt message of thanks for all you have done to help save lives. May the gifts of love, peace and friendship be with one and all this wintertime. But the sudden thought that over 600 more young people will have fallen victim to Young sudden Cardiac Death in the 12 months since I last attempted to write an annual review hit like a thunderbolt. For many who have lost loved ones, for whatever reason, the complexities of coping with the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations can be a real Pandora’s Box. Everything about this time of year appears to revolve around family and being together, amplifying emotions and the impact of loss. At a time when everyone else seems to be full of joyous celebration, dealing with searing grief and distressing changes in family dynamics can compound the maelstrom of feelings. For us and for many CRY families the knowledge that the loss could have been

Planning Fight

Firstly it has been an honour to have been invited and to have taken part in the Garstang and Over Wyre Armistice Services marking the 100 year anniversary of the cessation of the hostilities of World War 1 and the reopening of the Vicarage Park Community Hall in Poulton. ‘Lest We Forget’.

The Council continues to object to the proposal to build 65 homes off Carr End Lane in Stalmine and has submitted an objection to the Planning Inspectorate in respect of the developers appeal against the rejection of the first application. Remembrance Festive Lights The Parish Council’s contribution the commemoration of the centenary of WW1 – new gates and a memorial plaque at the entrance to Stalmine wood – is now in place. Budgeting The first draft of the budget for 2019/20 expenditure has been approved by the Parish Council and includes funds for the maintenance and management of the trees in Stalmine wood, fencing and a dedication plaque for the play area and signage for village walks. The final budget will be agreed in January.

Looking forward to the Festive period which will soon be upon us, there is an ask from the Neighbourhood Response Policing Team. Please be vigilant in protecting and securing your property from opportunists who sadly seek to take advantage of members of our community leaving their homes/vehicles insecure or leaving items of value on show. As always we will do our upmost to prevent and detect these crimes but our communities assistance is also greatly appreciated. Garstang Neighbourhood Response Policing Team

and

Each year we have a federation gathering - a chance for ladies from all the countries of our Federation to join together, to share ideas, celebrate achievements, listen to inspirational speakers, make plans for the future and generally enjoy fun and friendship which is a major part of being a Soroptimist. This year we were in Liverpool, with the opening ceremony taking place on the Thursday evening – the flags of the Federation countries were presented to the current Federation President and a roll call taken of the members present. As each country or UK Region was called,

the corresponding members would stand to be recognised and welcomed by all those present. Many had travelled hundreds of miles to attend – from Bangladesh, the Caribbean and South Africa – to name just a few. Friday was a morning of speakers – four in total, interspersed with round ups of various Soroptimist projects. In the afternoon, our AGM took place. As a democratic organisation, we need to agree on how we operate and for this year, decide on the Federation Programme Action project for 2019 – 2021 which will be Empowering Girls in Nepal. Saturday morning, more speakers and more programme reports – all of relevance to the aims and objectives of our organisation. The afternoon saw SI Garstang biting their nails. It was time for the SIGBI Best Practice

GARSTANG SOROPTIMISTS (cont) Awards and we had been nominated for our Classrooms in the Clouds project in the Education category. Even though we didn’t win, it was a great honour to be nominated and to see our Club name on the big screen in front of approximately 1100 of our fellow sisters. Our final uplifting speaker, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, brought the afternoon to an end with his hilarious recollections of his travels, which underlined his determination to succeed despite the conditions he found himself in. It was then a rush back to our hotels for a quick change into our finery, ready for the closing ceremony. Here the retiring Federation and Regional Presidents hand over their chains of office to the new leaders for 2018/19, we meet the Federation Management Board for the next year and we have the inaugural speech from our new Federation president.

Some final entertainment from Slidin’ About and then it was all over! THE OSCARS OF THE NORTH Schools Film & Photography Awards The Schools Film and Photography Festival Awards is an online festival and Oscar- type red carpet event for young people living in Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre. I founded the event after seeing children and young people taking pictures and filming along the promenade in Blackpool. I have been teaching TV presenting to all ages. We want all schools, colleges, homeeducated, special needs, individuals, youth clubs and youth associations, sport, dance and performing art groups to take part. As well as winning an award with a free trip to the venue, nominees will also get free food and drink. We will be giving out a lot of prizes. There are 14 categories covering film, TV presenting, acting, photography and writing. The awards will be split across the following age categories: 7-10, 11-14, 15–18 years. For the film category, they can submit from 30 seconds up to 5 minutes. For the writing category, they can submit by written or oral stories. We are also running workshops in Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre to help any children and young people who want to take part. All other submissions can be also submitted via email sfpfawards@gmail.com Submissions of works commenced on the 24th September and will run till 8th March 2019, allowing interested participants in the film, television and photography to submit their works for assessment and recognition. FLEETWOOD FLIERS Walking Football Another month brought another trip to Heywood Sports Centre for November’s round of fixtures. We had a reasonable session winning one, drawing two and losing one. These results keep us at the top of our Division with only one more session to go . If anyone is interested in taking part in Walking Football please come and join us at Poolfoot Farm, Fleetwood Town’s training facility. We have three sessions a week. Monday 7:00pm - 8:00pm in the five-a-side cages which is well attended and booking is essential through our web site. Wednesday 12:30pm - 2:00pm. This is our main event and is also well attended but as we have more pitches available to us we can accommodate more people on the open pitches. Friday 5:00pm - 6:00pm. This is the only session that is self regulated. We don`t have an official coach in attendance. We also have a women’s Over Thirties session in the cages 7:00pm - 8:00pm on Tuesday evenings. www.fleetwoodwalkingfooty.co.uk www.@fleetwoodwalkingfooty.co.uk George Greenall (01253)825206

SSRA Stalmine/Staynall Residents’ Association As well as our social events, the SSRA committee takes action on issues brought to us by residents. We are currently monitoring the recently refused planning permission to build 65 houses on Carr End Lane and have written to Wyre Borough Council endorsing their decision and grounds for refusal. We have also sent our objections to the Inspectorate in Bristol and sent copies to Ben Wallace MP, our local Councillors and Stalmine Parish Council. County Councillor John Shedwick attended our November meeting and spoke about the housing situation in Stalmine. Some members of the SSRA committee will have the opportunity to talk for three minutes each at a Wyre Borough Council meeting, (date as yet unknown but possibly February or March

2019), about our various objections to further builds in our village. As many residents as possible are asked to support us at the meeting. We will give further information about date, time and venue as soon as we are notified. The more residents who turn up, the stronger our case will be. Our SSRA Open Evening will take place at the Seven Stars in February 2019. Many thanks go to Keith and Barbara at the Seven Stars for allowing us to again use this venue. Residents will have the opportunity to raise concerns and suggestions about matters for Stalmine with Staynall. Further details nearer the time. Our annual lantern making for children and families took place in Stalmine School hall on Mon 26th Nov. Many thanks go to Miss Binns, the Head Teacher, for allowing us to continue to use the school facilities for this fun event. The Lantern Parade will take place on Mon 3rd Dec from the Village Hall to the Church to participate in the Christmas Lights switch-on. Our Christmas lights competition will be taking place as usual and prizes given for winning festive lights and or displays. Many Stalmine homes always have lovely Christmas lights at this time of year both in windows and gardens. Congratulations go to our committee member, Ann Ralph, on her participation in the London Cenotaph ceremony, marching on behalf of the Princess Mary’s Royal Airforce Nursing Service. Our next meeting is on Wed 5th Dec and then on Wed 2nd Jan, 7:00pm at the Seven Stars. For further information on any SSRA details please view our Facebook page or Stalmine Chat or contact Pauline Andrews 07808 058 097, Ann Ralph 07713 852 639, Barry Walsh 07528 031 944 or Peter Swarbrick (01253) 702675.
