COMMUNITY HEALTH May I take this opportunity of thanking you all for reading my attempted words of wisdom. It is particularly nice when people let me know they enjoy what I write and at least lets me know I am getting some of my words right!

local area. Each of these shops also meant local information could be passed around as people popped in and stood waiting to be served. In fact, they were the glue that held our community together.

I have been inspired by conversations with my patients this week so there are two parts to this. The first being to touch upon our community health in, perhaps, its broadest sense and the second being to focus for once on all the things you CAN enjoy at Christmas when it comes to food rather than worrying about what we should not be doing!

In tiny Kelbrook in East Lancashire near where I live there were 14 shops in the 1960s. There are none now. We abandoned these shops chasing the myth of convenience and bargains at the superstores. I would love to know what is convenient about needing a car to go shopping ten miles away at an out of town development, stuck in traffic, paying for petrol, taking an hour to get there and back to be faced with a choice of goods that has been decided for us by a group who have only one aim – profit for shareholders.

I had a chat with a couple of patients this week that made both myself and them reflect upon what has happened to our towns. We discussed the death of local shops and how each of these shops provided a living for a family and a couple of other jobs for local people that meant money stayed in our

Even new housing developments appear to come with no provision for local shops as we must all use our cars forcing us all onto the congested road network. We walk in and serve ourselves and even check out ourselves – meanwhile the shops in our villages die off because, apparently their goods are a few pennies more expensive than the cost in time and car ownership that we now require to do anything. Yet whenever I check the supermarkets tell lies about prices and manipulate us into buy one get one free deals that end up thrown in the bin. I saw a product that is less than ten pounds in my shop sold for fifteen in a local supermarket in Garstang but given a red label and a reduced tag down to £13! The sad thing being that we fall for this! And the next step down the line is that we have become so impatient to have everything right now that we are abandoning our high streets in droves to buy online to companies who contribute nothing in tax to our country, drain all our money upwards, pay appalling wages but can get it to us by tomorrow morning. Have we really become so impatient

COMMUNITY HEALTH (cont) for everything? Okay, I could go on but you get the drift so let me move onto this joyous festive season and what we can thoroughly enjoy with no guilt. First on the list is butter, closely followed by cheese – as far as I’m concerned cheese is a health food so enjoy it. Just limit the crackers that you may be tempted to have with it and have a glass of red wine or port with it (it lowers your blood pressure!) If you want to indulge in mince pies make sure you add cream to it. Yes that’s right, add cream! We need to balance carbohydrates with fats and protein and cream will help make this tasty treat a more balanced pleasure. To be honest, this goes for any desserts. Make sure all veg has an oil added to it as this provides balance and aids absorption of nutrients. Olive oil is best or butter of course.

Above all, never forget that time in the kitchen is never wasted time so make all your food from raw ingredients. It tastes better, is more satisfying and fun (I am definitely in the ‘Floyd on Food’ school of having a glass of wine by your side as you cook) and you know exactly what has gone into it. Great chefs always look to buy the best quality ingredients they can afford as opposed to the cheapest we can find. Looking for better quality in the long run means our farms and communities can improve their standards – always looking for cheap takes us into a race to the bottom, a race that negatively affects us all. So come on people, let us raise the standards as we raise our glasses this year. In addition, I wish you all a happy and very Merry Christmas and peace, joy and good health in the New Year. Nick Tofalos

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES

Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?

Dr Finlay Sutton

If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.

Brenda’s Testimonial

Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

GARSTANG ARTS CENTRE December Exhibition

The Ukulele at Christmas

just one ukulele.

‘Nature’s Bounty’ - An exhibition of art by local artist Margaret Rodwell.

If you’ve been following my brief history of the ukulele, don’t despair as it will continue next month, but as it is almost Christmas, it is time to get down to the shops, or online and buy ukuleles for all the people you love. Here’s some buying advice.

Concerts are a bit larger than a soprano and people with larger fingers may find that useful. The starting price is about £45, but you can go up to more than a thousand. It is worth visiting a music shop to hear and feel the instruments before choosing which to buy as you’ll probably find one you really love. Tenors are a bit larger again and have a slightly lower tone. Prices here will start at around £70.

Whether it is a landscape bathed in sunlight or covered in snow, or flowers from all four seasons of the year, Margaret aims to show the beauty of nature’s bounty in her solo exhibition of watercolour, pastel and mixed media. The exhibition is on at the Arts Centre until Thurs 13th Dec. Entries are invited for the 2019 Garstang & District Open Art Competition/Exhibition Tues 8th Jan to Thurs 7th Feb. For further details and entry forms please see our web site www.garstangartssociety.org.uk or from myself. Sheila Tearle (01995) 603816

There are 4 main types of ukulele – soprano; concert; tenor and baritone. Most people start with a soprano which can cost as little as £25. At this price they usually sound much the same so it is safe to buy online, but check the reviews to make sure it will stay in tune. But going this cheap may be a false economy as you will probably want to upgrade well before Easter. It is better to spend a bit more, about £40-50, and get something like a Makala Dolphin. That way it may be next Christmas before you are looking to upgrade – remember there’s no such thing as owning

Are you phoning an advertiser for a quote?

If you are buying for someone who already plays the guitar, it may be worth considering a baritone ukulele. All other ukuleles, sopranos, concerts and tenors are tuned to GCEA whereas the baritone is tuned DGBE, the same as the top 4 strings of a guitar. This means the chord shapes are the same, making it easier to change instruments. As the name suggests it also has a lower tone

and as with the tenors, their prices start at about £70. While your loved ones will be thrilled to receive their first ukulele, they will be delighted if you also buy them a tuner. These are widely available for about £10. There are some other variations you will come across when looking at ukuleles. While most ukuleles are acoustic, some have pickups fitted so they can be played through an amplifier which is ideal if you wish to perform as a soloist or in a small group. There are also solid body ukuleles that have to be played through an amplifier. Another variation is the banjolele, a ukulele with a banjo resonator and made famous by George Formby. And finally, how are they going to learn? There are some great online materials and

Our November meeting was bittersweet, as we said farewell to the wonderful Miranda Radford who stepped down as President, and we said hello to our equally marvellous new President, Evelyn Milner. How lucky are we to have such talented ladies in this WI?

Songbirds is a very friendly ladies group. We do not give performances, but just enjoy singing a wide repertoire of songs. We welcome those who have never sung in a group before, as well as those who sing well but do not want the commitment of a ‘proper’ choir! Songbirds meets every Monday (except Bank Holidays) at 1:30pm. On the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month there will be piano accompaniment, but on the 2nd and 4th (& 5th) Mondays we will sing along to CDs and / or music from a computer. For more details about the dates we are meeting in the coming months, please see The Arts Centre noticeboard.

The AGM was concluded, with the Secretary’s and the Financial Annual Reports being accepted, and three new committee members added to the current team. Thank you ladies...you will have fun! A super Hot Pot supper was served and a big thank you to the hostesses who had extra work to do that night....lots of washing up!

For more information ring Avril (01995) 602904.

Our next meeting will be on Tues 4th Dec and is our Christmas Party, the most delightful event of the year with fabulous home made food to get us in the festive mood. Please join us at 7:30pm for a great night.

GARSTANG WINE CIRCLE

The Catterall in Bloom team was only formed four years ago, and initially we were helped and encouraged by Nora Hoyles of Garstang. She would have been proud of us.

The earlier print deadline means that I am unable to report on our November tasting of wines from the USA, with Mick Gould. We have not had an evening of wines from the States for some time so I am writing this in eager anticipation of a good meeting.

The closing date for return of applications is 4:00pm on Mon 17th Dec.

As if those RHS accolades were not enough, the award to Gerry Dagger, aged 89, for having the Best Private Front Garden in the North West was a wonderful and well deserved reward. So it’s hats off to Gerry, who is a valued Bloom team member and our gardening hero.

The circle will hold its Christmas Social on Sat 15th Dec with the theme of ‘Garstang Goes to the Movies’. Members are reminded that entry is by ticket only priced at £15, fancy dress is optional. Details of the social can be obtained from Alan Jefferson (01995) 601842.

At the tender age of 9 she and her 3½ year old sister were put on the last Kindertransport train from Czechoslovakia to England via Holland in August 1939. This was all thanks to a young man named Nicholas Winton, who in total managed to save 669 children this way. Lady Milena and her sister were well looked after by a family for about a year before their father managed to get to England as well, and a year later their mother joined them.

Lady Milena had a very happy reunion with Mr Winton in 1988, when Esther Rantzen’s programme ‘That’s Life’ managed to get several of the (now grown up) rescued children to her show as a surprise for Mr Winton. In May 2017 a memorial in the form of a carriage door with shadow prints of adult and child hands on the glass window was erected on Prague railway station to recognise the agony of the parents having to let their children leave them, not knowing if they were ever able to be reunited. This was possible due to fundraising undertaken by the survivors led by Lady Milena. Mr Winton lived to be 106 before passing away in 2015. An incredibly moving talk, by far the best of all the great speakers we have had over the years. Judith gave a rather choked vote of thanks remarking that we should never forget this terrible history. The December meeting is our Christmas meal in The Grapes, see you all there. Judith Hunter

David Greenwood’s ‘War and Peace’ at our November meeting marked the centenary of the Armistice with a thoughtful choice of music representing the many aspects of war.

His selection blended the over-arching tragedy with expressions of hope and, on occasion, humour. Benjamin Britten’s setting of Wilfred Owen’s ‘Strange Meeting’ made a powerful and appropriate conclusion. The December meeting is the society’s AGM. Normal programmes resume on Mon 7th Jan when David Greenwood will present a programme with the title ‘Absolute Beginners’ from 7:30pm to 9:30pm in Garstang Arts Centre. Our Chairman, Alan Pearson, was laden with framed certificates to carry home! Well done to all those involved. The afternoon ended with nominations for some of the best entries to take part in the national Britain in Bloom Competition 2019 and we’re delighted to say that Garstang has been asked to represent the North West in the Small Town category. Planning for next year has already begun! A couple of weeks earlier, the Bloomers joined up with the Independent Garstang Traders (IGT) to celebrate the horticultural work done by our local businesses. The event took place at Wyrebank and was hosted by Luke Pollard. Again we are grateful to Leah Hynes, ably assisted by the Young Mayor, Robert Ibison, for the presentation of the certificates. Alan announced the results. The Carrs Jewellers trophy for the best overall display was won by The Royal Oak and the Norah Hoyles trophy for the most original display went to Bombshell Betty Boutique. Ten Gold, Silver and Bronze certificates were also handed out. Golds went to Garstang Deli, The Kings Arms, The Tithe Barn and Carrs. The evening was enjoyed by all, with food, drinks, a raffle and music provided by the Buddy Good Guys. Thanks go to the businesses who decorated their premises with plants and flowers and to the IGT for an enjoyable evening.

CAT SMITH MP (cont) As I write I’ve bought my first box of mince pies and I’m looking forward to a quiet five minutes to indulge in a bit of Christmas cheer – I might be waiting a while!

This year has been life changing with the addition of baby Eli who is coming up to five months old - and is now well used to accompanying me to events across the constituency. He’s helped me to mark the arrival of a new defibrillator in Preesall, visited schools in Winmarleigh, Fleetwood and Lancaster, he’s helped me eat cake at various events marking The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning – Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer, and been to fire stations, churches, charity shop openings and events to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. It’s just a pity all this activity doesn’t encourage him to sleep a bit longer through the night! As well as becoming a mum it’s been a busy political year. My team and I have sent out over 6,000 emails and letters either responding to constituents or writing on their behalf to local authorities, agencies and the Government. In particular we’ve been successful in helping constituents with disabilities to fight efforts to remove their disability benefits. More than 70% of appeals against the removal of Personal Independence Payments have been successful. We’ve also been involved in supporting constituents struggling with the Universal Credit. Lobbying of Government has led to changes which limit the harm caused. Most people in receipt of Universal Credit are receiving in-work benefits and I’ve dealt with a high number of cases of constituents on low incomes and zero hour contracts being

The beginning of the year saw huge concern over cancelled hospital appointments and operations due to the winter crisis - and the knock on effect of this was felt way into the summer. I’ve continued to lobby the Government to provide more funding in the autumn to allow hospitals to plan more effectively for its busiest time of the year. We’ve had some big environmental issues to tackle with fracking and gas storage being of huge concern in the constituency. I am one of five Lancashire MPs who collectively in November wrote to the Energy Secretary to call for a halt in fracking following so many worrying earth tremors. This is in addition to the regular letters I write myself highlighting the damage being caused. Labour has set out plans for energy that are ambitious, will create hundreds of thousands of jobs and will make Britain the only developed country outside Scandinavia to be on track to meet our climate change obligations. By 2030 we’re committed to creating a sevenfold increase in offshore windfarms and a tripling of solar power, enabling nearly 20m homes to be powered by wind and solar.

Garstang & District Heritage Society It was great to see the launch of the Poppy Trail at St Thomas’s Church Hall in Oct. The Heritage Society team have been very busy researching the War Memorials throughout the former Garstang Rural District and have now identified over 30 locations with tributes to the local fallen of WW1. We have five locations in the town centre and all have had a Poppy Plaque installed. The team are to be commended on their efforts

with over 20 Poppy Plaques having been installed in the District. Each plaque has a link to the Society’s website with information on all of the men who gave their lives. Soroptimists far and wide

Our final uplifting speaker, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, brought the afternoon to an end with his hilarious recollections of his travels, which underlined his determination to succeed despite the conditions he found himself in.

Each year we have a federation gathering - a chance for ladies from all the countries of our Federation to join together, to share ideas, celebrate achievements, listen to inspirational speakers, make plans for the future and generally enjoy fun and friendship which is a major part of being a Soroptimist.

This year we were in Liverpool, with the opening ceremony taking place on the Thursday evening – the flags of the Federation countries were presented to the current Federation President and a roll call taken of the members present. As each country or UK Region was called, the corresponding members would stand to be recognised and welcomed by all those present. Many had travelled hundreds of miles to attend – from Bangladesh, the Caribbean and South Africa – to name just a few. Friday was a morning of speakers – four in total, interspersed with round ups of various Soroptimist projects. In the afternoon, our AGM took place. As a democratic organisation, we need to agree on how we operate and for this year, decide on the Federation Programme Action project for 2019 – 2021 which will be Empowering Girls in Nepal. Saturday morning, more speakers and more programme reports – all of relevance to the aims and objectives of our organisation. The afternoon saw SI Garstang biting their nails. It was time for the SIGBI Best Practice Awards and we had been nominated for our Classrooms in the Clouds project in the Education category. Even though we didn’t win, it was a great honour to be nominated and to see our Club name on the big screen

It was then a rush back to our hotels for a quick change into our finery, ready for the closing ceremony. Here the retiring Federation and Regional Presidents hand over their chains of office to the new leaders for 2018/19, we meet the Federation Management Board for the next year and we have the inaugural speech from our new Federation president. Some final entertainment from Slidin’ About and then it was all over! Like many others, our Region’s members attending conference (about 50) joined together for one last meal before one last night in wonderful Liverpool before our homeward journey next day.

celebrations can be a real Pandora’s Box. Everything about this time of year appears to revolve around family and being together, amplifying emotions and the impact of loss.

accept this simple, but heartfelt message of thanks for all you have done to help save lives. May the gifts of love, peace and friendship be with one and all this wintertime.

Perhaps it’s the stories of remembrance that the BBC aired this morning when folks at the Cenotaph talked of the impact of the loss of friends, comrades and family that brought on this melancholy transition or maybe it’s the inescapable fact that another year that Matt will not see is fast approaching - I don’t know.

At a time when everyone else seems to be full of joyous celebration, dealing with searing grief and distressing changes in family dynamics can compound the maelstrom of feelings.

For further information about the fund and upcoming events see The Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund on Facebook or contact me.

Have you ever set about a task with great fervour only for a single line of thought to completely knock you out of kilter and off track?

But the sudden thought that over 600 more young people will have fallen victim to Young sudden Cardiac Death in the 12 months since I last attempted to write an annual review hit like a thunderbolt.

For us and for many CRY families the knowledge that the loss could have been prevented by a simple ECG is heart breaking, but it is also the driving force behind the relentless campaigning and fundraising to put on heart screening events to prevent others facing such dreaded and acutely painful times.

Today it’s one of those days. It was my intention to regale tales to you of all those wonderful exploits that have occurred this

BEN WALLACE MP

Lancashire.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and peaceful Christmas. I personally look forward to this special time of year and spending time with my family here in

There are many throughout the constituency and indeed the country who cannot be with their loved ones over the holiday period. Having served myself in the Armed Forces, I know what it is like to be parted from your loved ones at Christmas and my thoughts are with all Forces personnel who are serving overseas or will not be able to go home over the holiday period. I would also like to thank our amazing emergency services who keep us safe all year round. At this special time our thoughts

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) go to all from the NHS, Police, Fire Service and all agencies and volunteers who look after our safety and well-being. My thoughts and best wishes are with all who are working over the festive period. I am extremely proud to be a Lancashire MP, especially looking back on how the County remembered the centenary of the end of the First World War. It was heart-warming to see how local communities came together from all age groups to remember the sacrifice made by so many. I was particularly pleased to see schools throughout the constituency staging special assemblies and looking into the history of the local community in relation to the Great War. I have said it many times but, we must never forget the sacrifice a whole generation made so that we may live in peace. There seems to be worrying increase in scams and doorstep crime in the run-up to

Christmas. If you would like any advice on this issue please visit: www.lancashire. gov.uk/consumer-advice/scams-anddoorstepcrime/ Another issue which concerns me greatly, related to scams and doorstep crime, is the increasing risk of internet scams and phishing. Government advice states: do not give out private information (such as bank details or passwords), reply to text messages, download attachments or click on any links in emails if you’re not sure they are genuine. As always my mailbag and inbox is filled with a great variety of issues both local and national. It is important I know the issues which concern you in order for me to represent you effectively in Westminster and locally. With this in mind I welcome as many opinions from constituents as possible. I believe communication is key and that is why I always

encourage constituents to get in touch. If I can be of any assistance to you please ring my Office at the House of Commons on 02072 195 804 or my Constituency Office on (01995) 672977, email me at wallaceb@ parliament.uk or write to me at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA. Ben Wallace MP

EPILEPSY STUDY Families Could Help Shape Major Study Hoping for Epilepsy Breakthrough Families with children with epilepsy are being asked to help shape a major study funded by the National Institute of Health Research that could provide a breakthrough in treatment for the condition. Professors at Edge Hill University are looking for parents of children with Rolandic Epilepsy, the most common form of childhood epilepsy, to join their patient and public involvement advisory panel for the study. CASTLE (Changing Agendas on Sleep, Treatment and Learning in Epilepsy) is a sixyear study, led by King’s College, London which includes a clinical trial measuring the effectiveness of two different epilepsy drugs in terms of children’s sleep, alertness and ability to learn. Testing

drug against a newer prescription drug and a placebo, the study hopes to provide a breakthrough in drug choice and treatment for the condition. Professor Lucy Bray, who is leading the advisory panel work for CASTLE, said: ‘Finding parents, carers, or children, with experience, past or present, of Rolandic Epilepsy is absolutely vital to this project. ‘They’re the ones who will have had to make decisions first hand about treatment. Some parents report that they can find it difficult to balance controlling seizures against their child’s alertness and ability to learn. ‘That’s why this whole programme and the clinical trial within it is so important and could help so many families faced with diagnosis.’ She added: ‘We want to make sure everything we do in CASTLE is family focused and this is an opportunity for families across the North of England to join our panel and have their say. Volunteers don’t need any special skills; we are just keen to hear their opinions.
