HEALTH ADVICE Happy New Year to you all. Here we go again! As the year begins to race away from us and the festive season recedes I thought I’d offer up a rather sobering thought to help recovery from over indulgence. Did you know that the third highest cause of death in America is correctly prescribed drugs? Approximately 100,000 people a year die in the US from this! Now I don’t know about you but when I look at that it fills me with horror. I work as an osteopath and I can assure you right now that if just one person died from an osteopathic treatment it would be headline news and there would be accusations of quackery and that we should be banned. How can it be that the medical profession can allow this kind of figure to continue? Doctors are dedicated, hard working and determined to do their best for their patients.

Are we beginning to over rely on symptom management? For example if you have high blood pressure walking for half an hour a day for two months can be more effective at lowering blood pressure and even helping diabetes and arthritis than any drugs available. Doctors make these suggestions but human beings are lazy and it can be easier to prescribe a drug. So we pop a pill as a magic fix without any thought as to the long term consequences of doing this. Underlying this we have powerful pharmaceutical companies whose very existence depends on illness and prescribing magic fixes rather than our population being taught how to be healthy. Prevention is not as profitable. Yes folks there is a deep cynicism that exists for profit that underpins much of our health system. Our front line health professionals rely upon information from these drug companies regarding what they should be offering patients. So I advise you all to take great care this year with your medication and be aware - your body wants to be healthy and if you give it the right conditions - exercise, socially connected to other people, real food, laughter and fresh air it will begin to find good health. Be suspicious of quick fixes! Nick Tofalos

SEQUENCE STEPPERS Charity Dance Group We meet on alternate Thursdays at Barton Village Hall. Dancing from 7:45pm to 11:15pm with various music groups. Home made refreshments. Admission £3. We donate all our profits to local charities. Barbara Holden (01995) 601348

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES

Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?

Dr Finlay Sutton

If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.

Brenda’s Testimonial

Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

GARSTANG WINE CIRCLE At the meeting on Mon 19th Nov Mick Gould presented an interesting and varied selection of wines from North America. His entertaining presentation and interesting selection of wines made for a very enjoyable evening. The Circle held its Christmas Social on the Sat 15th Dec at the Arts Centre. A very windy and wet evening did not deter the hardy members of the Circle from attending the proceedings. The theme for the evening was ‘Garstang goes to the Movies’. Some of the members did attend in costume and the evening’s entertainment reflected the theme.

‘race track’. We had a fiendishly difficult film quiz set by Brian Heaton, which had us all trying to remember the films, stars and theme tunes seen and heard over many years. Ann Wicks delivered a hilarious monologue about the making of a Christmas cake. However the person making the cake imbibes most of the booze intended to go in the cake, and by the end of the monologue is incapable of reading or following the instructions in the recipe!

There was a game that our chairman Alan Jefferson set up, based on the car race in the film ‘Grease’.

Tables were also set the challenge of producing a film script in a game of consequences. Then there was an excellent buffet, prepared by Anne Whitehead and the catering team.

Representatives of the two gangs, the T-Birds (Rosemary Stokes) and the Pink Ladies (Lynne Ridings) battled for supremacy on the

The wines for the evening, of which there was an ample sufficiency, including fizz, white, pink and red, were selected by Guy Pugh.

CATTERALL IN BLOOM As the New Year begins, the Catterall in Bloom team reflect on what has been an extraordinary 2018, when the RHS honoured us with Gold and also the MVS trophy for the Best Large Village in the North West. We are a new team, which only started four years ago, and to receive these accolades which other villages work years to achieve, is amazing. The members of the Bloom team

CATTERALL IN BLOOM (cont) have been brilliant and each has a skill which has shone out over the last twelve months. Who knew that so many talented people lived in Catterall? The team painted railings and gates, watered and weeded in the scorching summer, helped plan the flower beds, made crochet daisies, went litter picking, scrubbed pots and containers, mowed grass verges, made scones for the judges, and a million other vital jobs which all tied up magically to make the Gold happen. These heroes are the reason for our success. Thank you all. Well done to Beaconsfield Terrace for their Neighbourhood Thriving award, which reflects their amazing transformation in this, their first year of entering. Lodge Park and Stones Lane received Outstanding for their Neighbourhoods. Well done everyone. Your front gardens were astoundingly beautiful

and much admired by the judges. Catterall is looking fabulous all year round, and it is thanks not only to the Bloom team, but to everyone who supported us with funding and kind words of encouragement. The Parish Council has already pledged to fund us again in 2019, when we will be judged not only as part of North West in Bloom but also nationally alongside Garstang, in the Britain in Bloom competition. If Gerry Dagger can win Best Private Front Garden in the North West at the age of 89, then there is hope for us all! Well done Gerry you are an inspiration to us all. It is also a wonderful testimony to the many years of hard work from Tim Hoyles, our Parish Lengthsman, that we received a Gold in the final year before his retirement. He deserves a huge thank you for keeping Catterall looking the best it has ever been.

GARSTANG’S GREAT WAR PROJECT 2014 - 2018 Four years ago, with the backing of Garstang Historical Society, an appeal was launched for financial sponsorship for the proposed book ‘Garstang’s Great War Heroes’ about the life and sad deaths of the 19 servicemen from Garstang, Bonds and Bowgreave, whose names are listed on Garstang’s war memorial. Through the generosity of local people

£3,800 was raised. Publication went ahead in autumn 2015. In November 2015 copies were given to pupils of Garstang Community Primary, St Thomas’s CE, SS Mary and Michael Catholic Primary schools and Garstang Academy. Every Remembrancetide from November 2016 the first year intake of pupils at the three primary schools have been given copies. Sales between November 2015 and October 2018 raised around £2,000, all of which has been given to Garstang Poppy Appeal. Between 2014 and 2018 Paul G Smith gave many lectures in the area on Great War topics, including one to a packed audience at St Thomas’s Parish Hall on the evening of Sun 11th Nov (ticket sales from that event raised £480 which was donated to the 2018

GREAT WAR PROJECT (cont) poppy appeal). Displays of old photos and local historical material linked to the Great War have been held throughout Garstang and district. In addition to those who initially helped (whose names are listed in the book) we would also like to thank: Garstang Town Trust (use of the Market House display window), Maureen Spiers (treasurer of Garstang Historical Society), Market Place News (book sales), Liz Cripps (tourist office, book sales), Garstang Arts Centre, KwikKutz, Dewlay, Towers & Gornall (book sales), Garstang CP, Garstang St Thomas’s CE and SS Mary and Michael Catholic schools (for enthusiasm and support), several Town Councillors and recent Town Mayors including Cllr Leah Hynes (for support), Joe Gilmour (loan of display boards) and Garstang residents who have thanked us for our efforts.

Free copies of ‘Garstang’s Great War Heroes’ will continue to be donated to the first year intake of the three Garstang primary schools every November, and the book will remain on sale (£5) at Market Place News and the Visit Garstang tourist bureau until the print run is exhausted, which will probably be in the early to mid-2020s. Proceeds from sales of the book will continue to be donated to Garstang Poppy Appeal. * Any young person living within the boundaries of township/civil parish of Garstang or the Bonds/Bowgreave area (the area of Barnacre west of the railway line) who has, for whatever reason, not yet received a free copy of the book, should ask their parent or guardian to contact us via the number below. After the excitement of Christmas and the New Year, time to settle down again and as usual I want to talk about keeping yourself secure. If you’re new to the internet, or already use it but would like to take advantage of the huge variety of things it can do to make life easier, it can be a confusing and daunting world. Here are a few basic tips that can help you to stay safe. It’s a big topic and this is only a small list, but it’s a good place to start. 1. Passwords are important. Choose, use and protect your passwords carefully, and use a different one for every online account in case one or more get hacked. 2. Look after your mobile devices. Don’t leave them unattended in public places, and always protect them with a PIN or passcode. 3. that this is kept updated and switched on. Remember that smartphones and tablets can get compromised as much as computers. Always install operating system, program and app updates when prompted, as these frequently contain security fixes and improvements. If possible, get them to update automatically. Wi-Fi hotspots in places like cafes, bars and hotel rooms are NOT secure, so never use them when you’re doing anything confidential online. Instead, use 3G or 4G or consider using a VPN (virtual private network). Never reveal too much personal or financial information in emails, on social networking and dating sites and in person. You never know who might see it or use it. Whether online or on the phone, people aren’t always who they claim to be. Fake emails and phone calls are a favourite way for fraudsters to approach their victims. Don’t click on links in emails , posts, tweets or texts – and don’t open attachments – if the source isn’t 100% known and trustworthy, or it seems strange that you’d be receiving them. Never pay for anything by direct bank transfer – including goods, services, tickets, travel and holidays – unless it’s to someone you know personally and is reputable. Take your time and think twice, because everything may not be as it seems. Remember that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

But the ukulele was increasingly seen as a toy rather than a serious instrument and the electric guitar can make a very different sound! Where would Jimi Hendrix

GARSTANG ARTS CENTRE (cont) be if he’d stuck to his ukulele? In the 1960s Tiny Tim did manage to make the charts while playing his ukulele, but in many ways, he was playing its (near) death march. However, by the mid-1980s a new breed of ukulele player was emerging as the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain began to combine humour and great musicality into an act that is still touring the world. And in 2002 we had that iconic moment when Joe Brown played the final song at the Concert for George on his ukulele – ‘I’ll see you in my dreams’. Elsewhere in the USA many ukulele professionals were emerging and the phenomena of community ukulele groups was beginning. People were discovering that the ukulele was relatively easy to learn and could be used to play a wide range of popular music. What’s more, because of the low sustain of the ukulele, large groups could play together and sound better, something that is not so easy with guitars. This community musical movement quickly spread to the UK and to Europe and most towns now support several ukulele groups in pubs, clubs and community centres as well as U3As. While many of these groups are dominated by retired people, the ukulele has also begun to replace the recorder as the primary instrument in junior schools. Garstang is part of that movement. Our group has been running for just over three years now and while people come and go our membership remains strong at between 40 - 50. Many of the people in our group also belong to other groups – Lancaster U3A, Preston Strummers, Woodplumpton, Morecambe,

Halton. We also have several individuals and small groups who will perform in concerts and open mic events. In October 2015, most of those who first joined the group had not played a ukulele or guitar before, yet by Easter of 2016 we played our first performance to the Parkinson’s Disease Society in Preston and have been invited back ever since. If you fancy joining us, do please come along to Garstang Arts Centre on any Sunday afternoon. We are there from 1:00pm and play between 2:00pm - 4:00pm. CAT SMITH MP First of all, I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas and I’d like to wish you all a very happy New Year. The early part of this year will obviously be dominated by Brexit but as ever the needs and concerns of my constituents will continue to be my greatest priority as I prepare to return to Westminster. If I can be of any help to you then please email me or call my constituency office. There’s been concern in Over Wyre about ambulance response times. Some weeks ago I wrote to the North West Ambulance Service requesting details about how long it takes for paramedics to attend rural constituents in Knott End, Preesall and Pilling. The service has replied with average response times calculated between September 2017 and September 2018.

For serious life threatening emergencies like cardiac arrest or allergic reaction it took an ambulance on average 37 minutes to reach Pilling, 29 minutes to reach Preesall and 25 minutes to get to Knott End. Regionally these calls will be responded to in an average time of 7 minutes and at least 9 out of 10 times within 15 minutes. For emergency calls to illnesses like strokes, burns or epilepsy the average ambulance time to Preesall was 1 hour and 3 minutes, 53 minutes to Pilling and 51 minutes to Knott End. Regionally these calls will be responded to in an average time of 18 minutes and at least 9 out of 10 times within 40 minutes. For urgent calls which include late stages of labour, non-severe burns and diabetes it took ambulances on average 2 hours and 33 minutes to reach Pilling, 2 hours and 29 minutes to get to Knott End and 2 hours and 27 minutes to reach Preesall. CAT SMITH MP (cont) these types of calls will be responded to at least 9 out of 10 times within 120 minutes. For less urgent calls like vomiting and urinary infections it took paramedics 2 hours and 18 minutes to get to Knott End and 1 hour and 44 minutes to get to Preesall – there were no recorded figures for Pilling. Regionally these less urgent calls will be responded to at least 9 out of 10 times within 180 minutes. Rural areas are already at a disadvantage when it comes to the provision of services and public transport but I’m particularly concerned that response times are so poor for emergency and urgent calls. I’ll be asking what can be done to improve these times. If you have observations or concerns then please get in touch with me. There are still 4.3 million people on the NHS waiting list. 1,940 people were stuck in the back of an ambulances for over 60 minutes during the week commencing 3rd December and bed occupancy in December was 94.2%, nearly 10% above the recommended level deemed as safe for patients. Winter is only just beginning for our NHS and these are hugely concerning figures that don’t bode well for the difficult months ahead. Ministers must start prioritising patients’ interests by outlining proposals for the NHS this winter. It would be totally unforgivable if patients suffered another winter crisis like the ones we’ve seen in recent years. Constituents in Preesall have expressed concerns over road safety on the Burned House Lane junction following a collision in November when a driver failed to negotiate a bend and crashed into a barn. CAT SMITH MP (cont) to hear back from Lancashire County Council regarding measures they may take to improve safety. The police however have got back to me having sent their traffic management officer out to look at the junction. They agree a lower speed limit would help to reduce collisions. If you have any further observations to make about this junction please get in touch. I’ll let you know when I hear back from the county council. Make sure you take your Christmas trees, cardboard and old wrapping paper to the waste recycle centre before mid-January. Fleetwood Household Waste Recycling Centre will be closed from Fri 18th Jan for approximately 6 weeks while they undertake some site improvements. The nearest county council Household Waste Recycling Centres will be at Saltcoates Road,

Lytham and Tom Benson Way, Preston. From the 18th you can also use Blackpool Recycling Centre at Bispham as long as you are not in a van or a car towing a trailer. If you require a permit for your vehicle or you’re doing a household DIY project and need to dispose of any inert waste use the Lytham and Preston sites only and ensure you have a permit in advance of your visit. BEN WALLACE MP I hope you have all had a great holiday. I enjoyed the break, spending time with my family and friends here in Lancashire, recharging the batteries. I am looking forward to meeting more constituents, local businesses and services over the course of 2019 and my office is already busy scheduling visits and meetings on a wide range of issues. Even when events in Westminster seem to dominate the news, it is extremely important to me to keep in touch with my constituents and to hear their views. So, as always, please do not hesitate to contact me to give me your opinions about any issue, local or national. Just before Christmas, I was delighted to see the Lancashire Football Association announce a two-year partnership with the

Garstang based charity, The Adam Appeal. The Adam Appeal was set up by Adam Swanwick’s family, following the 28-yearold’s tragic death from an acute heart attack in 2012. Had there been a working defibrillator nearby at the time, medical professionals say Adam could very well still be here today. This has spurred Adam’s family on to increase the awareness and urgent need for access to defibrillators across the region. With the help of the Lancashire Football Association, the Adam Appeal will facilitate more defibrillators in football clubs and indeed in the wider community. Working with the North-West Ambulance Service, the aim is to establish a network of defibrillator’s throughout local communities. Mental health issues are often misunderstood and there continues to be a great deal of

groups who attend Wyre’s Flood Forum.

I would encourage anyone suffering from Mental Health issues, including anxiety and depression, to view the Organisation’s Facebook Page. The aim of the group is for members to support each other and provide understanding during difficult times as well as promote awareness of mental health issues.

I am sure that many Hambleton residents will have attended the community drop-in sessions held by the Environment Agency in November to publicise the work the Agency is undertaking to explore how flood risk in Hambleton can be reduced. The Agency is proposing a scheme of linear defences which should reduce flood risk in Hambleton to 0.5%.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/ enduringmentalhealth/?fref=nf

It is very important for all agencies and local authorities to continue to work together to highlight issues and minimise risk.

As the weather continues to be unpredictable, I continue to highlight the risk of flooding in many areas and I have a meeting scheduled with the Head of the Environment Agency early this year.

I understand that during the drop-in sessions a number of residents expressed concern about privacy, views and security and I am pleased to report that the Agency is looking to make alterations to the proposed designs in the light of the comments received.

I do think flood awareness has improved and this is down to the hard work of many local

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) the last year passing on the concerns and views of constituents in connection with the condition and safety of roads. I do have to report that I believe that highways are improving with LCC investing an additional ÂŁ5m in 18/19 which I am pleased to say was matched by Government. On top of this most of you will remember that the A588 will benefit from additional funding from the Governments Safer Roads Fund. LCC have also been awarded Band 3 which is connected with self-assessment and is due to improving good practice. This comes with an additional investment of ÂŁ3m into the highway infrastructure. While I am not saying the local highway infrastructure is perfect, I do believe it is improving. If there are any sections of road which you feel need attention you can report them to the County Council here: www. lancashire.gov.uk/roads-parking-andtravel/fault-search/ You may recall from my previous articles that I have been seeking to highlight to the Fylde and Wyre Clinical Commissioning Group that Over Wyre residents are disadvantaged when it comes to the out-of-hours GP service which they can access.

Please remember if you would like to attend one the most effective way to contact me is by e-mail, with a brief description of the issues you wish to raise and your contact details. It is worth bearing in mind that I can often offer assistance without the need for a meeting. If I can be of any assistance to you please ring my Office at the House of Commons on 0207 219 5804 or my Constituency Office on 01995 672977, email me at wallaceb@ parliament.uk or write to me at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA. I am pleased to advise that the Clinical Commissioning Group has now acknowledged the issues faced by Over Wyre residents who have previously been required to travel to Fleetwood or Freckleton to access out-of-hours medical services. The Clinical Commissioning Group is now looking to provide another service location which will be more accessible to Over Wyre residents. I would like to thank Malcolm Worsley, who has recently retired as Vice-Chair of the Patient Participation Group at the Over Wyre Medical Centre, for his efforts in raising awareness of this issue. I continue to meet residents at my advice surgeries covering a wide range of issues.

HOW TO BE A FIT & HEALTHY MUM I don’t have the time! I can’t be bothered! I can’t stay motivated! I can’t afford it! I get bored easily... all common excuses about why we don’t take better care of ourselves.

I hate going to the gym, or doing fitness classes. Seemingly the only way I can workout with any enjoyment is at home in my own comfy surroundings.

I’ve used every excuse myself. Personally,

Not everything works or feels right, so its a case of finding small things that you can implement into your lifestyle, making fitness quick and easy, so it can fit into your day without feeling like a total pain the ass. Making snacks and mealtimes easy and relatively quick to create is the way forward. Feeling worthy that a little time spent on ourselves will make us fitter mentally as well as physically. Its a tricky combo to get it all right, but with a bit of trial and error, you can definitely get on the right track to becoming a fitter and healthier Mum. I can honestly say I am a typical Mum: snacking, not drinking enough water, drinking a glass of wine whilst I cook the evening meal and I’ve definitely decided that whenever I make a cup of tea it MUST be paired with a biscuit of some sort! In my defence, I do eat pretty healthily, I cook nice roast dinners, soups, curries, pasta dishes, I opt for vegetarian based meals sometimes, I don’t eat fatty or fried foods, and I love fish and all the things that are good for you (nuts, fruits, green vegetables, avocados etc etc).

With me its all about balance. I have definitely improved my diet in my 30s compared to my 20s, and of course I am very mindful of having a healthy, balanced and quick to cook diet now that we have a Daughter (she is almost 9, but enjoys big portions the same size as Daddy) – Daddy will contest this point, and say that his portions are too small and the same size as our Daughter. Here are my Top Tips for Fitness & Nutrition as a Mum •

Never feel guilty for making your fitness a priority. As a Mum, we always feel like we are needed somewhere else, with

HOW TO BE A HEALTHY MUM (cont) if you are anything like me, who likes to get home from the school run, throw on a pair of leggings and oversized top, empty the dishwasher whilst I have a crumpet, then put on a home workout DVD in my lounge on the shaggy rug, then we have a lot in common. • chores to be done. If you are happy, healthy and confident, it will positively impact your home life and parenting, It will also inspire your children to be a fit and healthy person. You are a role model to your child, and what better life tip to teach them. •

Don’t be so hard on yourself. If you want to eat out and have an indulgent meal, or you have the odd takeaway, then just make sensible choices. Don’t say no to treats, just have them in moderation. Enjoy a little cheeky drink for special occasions, nights out, or the odd glass of wine or a beer with a weekend movie. Again, everything in moderation. Water! Drink as much water in the day as you can. I’ve been a nightmare with this one. Get a water bottle if it helps you. It was the only way I seem to stick at drinking enough water. Don’t compare yourself to all those InstaCelebs, with their personal trainers, chefs, time on their hands, and most of the time, no children. In fact don’t compare yourself to anybody other than yourself. Aim to improve on yourself as an individual. Its good to be inspired and motivated by positive role models. Take all of their knowledge and tips and see what works for you. Ditch what doesn’t. Don’t waste money on silly fitness gadgets, expensive gym memberships or expensive clothing. If you are the kind of person who stays motivated best in a gym environment then go for it, but

Finally the old lack of energy and don’t have the time situation – Improving your diet and doing regular exercise will give you the energy you are lacking and improve your mood. If you take out the travelling time to and from the gym, or change the type of workout you are doing, you only need 20 minutes each day to have an effective workout. Google HIIT workouts – better still click my link to the Joe Wicks – The Body Coach Workout. That one is a good one.

GARSTANG CAMERA CLUB much time and effort needs to go into applying for the accreditation.

Congratulations to two members of the Camera Club who have recently received photographic awards. John Moxham received a CPAGB Award. To receive this award from the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain, photographers have to put forward 10 images to a panel of 6 judges who can vote up to 5 marks to each image. The applicant has to score a minimum of 200 out of the 300 votes available. The standard is very high and

Peter Knight has received a BPE Crown Award which gives BPE1* Accreditation. To achieve this, photographers enter national photographic salons under the auspices of the British Photographic Exhibitions organisation. Only a high standard of work is accepted into the exhibitions and to achieve the accreditation, the photographer has to have had 25 acceptances within the exhibitions circuit. The club is looking forward to 2019. We start the year on Wed 2nd Jan with a talk by Lee Metcalf telling us about his ‘Journey from Film to Digital and Back to Film for Professional Work’. On Wed 9th Jan we have a workshop which includes looking at images to be put forward of the upcoming competition with

SOROPTIMISTS Women Inspiring Action, Transforming Lives New Year Wishes and Thanks The members of your local Soroptimist club wish everyone a very Happy, Peaceful, and Healthy New Year. Our thanks go to everyone who has supported us throughout the 2018 year. We hope you all enjoyed our parched peas on both nights of the Garstang Victorian Festival. Our thanks to Carr’s Jewellers for allowing us to use their side entrance each year. We always seem to sell out early, and this year was no exception! We raised £337 which will be going to our charity – Mary’s Meals. This year we also continued our tradition of

providing a Christmas Hamper to be raffled by the Festival Committee, with all proceeds going towards the Festival Lights fund – we hope the lucky winner enjoyed our selection. Mary’s Meals – ‘Double the Love’ Great news! From the beginning of December until the 1st March, donations to the Double the Love appeal are being matched by the UK Government, up to £2million! Mary’s Meals is Garstang Soroptimists’ charity this year, so what a wonderful opportunity to share a world of learning and possibility with vulnerable children in places like Zambia. For so many, working, begging or foraging for food to survive is a daily reality that eclipses any dreams of attending school. With our donations, we are keeping the hope of a brighter future alive for the children who receive Mary’s Meals, including 10 year old Eneless. Amazingly, for one so young, Eneless is able to see beyond the daily struggles and is working hard at school, nourished by the simple mug of hot phala (porridge) she enjoys with her classmates each morning. ‘I used to be hungry all the time, but now, when I eat, I feel good and I’m able to learn’, says Eneless. Having discovered a passion for learning and finding out more about the world around her, this little girl now dreams of becoming a teacher herself. What a joy it is to hear Eneless talk with such enthusiasm about the hope she finds in the classroom, full of energy provided by the meal our donation is helping to make possible! Just £13.90 will feed a child like Eneless for a whole school year. Moana Moana is a sassy female who like most cats prefers her own personal space and knows what she wants in life!

Marble Marble is a stunning girl who is ready for adoption after coming into our care after being found as an injured stray. Since the day she has arrived, Marble has been a lovely, super friendly girl who loves her fuss and lots of attention. She interacts well towards anyone she meets and will happily sit on your knee for some time. Marble doesn’t mind being held and is now becoming playful. She will make a nice family pet to any home and is suitable to live with sensible children but is searching for a home that allows her to be the only cat within a household.

She is looking for a loving home after she ended up in our care having been abandoned in a property by her previous owner. She is an independent lady but will ask for attention on her terms but doesn’t like to be overly fussed so will tell you when she has had enough. We have found that this behaviour is much better when she is allowed time away from the cattery environment so we are hoping that once in a more spacious and quieter home this behaviour will fade. Moana does live with another cat at the centre but they seem to just tolerate each other’s company, so we would be happy for Moana to be re-homed separately. New experienced owners would need to learn to read her body language and recognise when to give her space. She would benefit from being the only pet in the house and isn’t suitable to live with young children. Peanut Peanut has found himself looking for a new home after being found as a stray. He is fine being stroked but much prefers all four paws on the floor. He can be a little shy at times so does take some time to warm up to peoples company so he will need lots of positive human interactions in his new home. Peanut is looking to be re-homed alongside a neutered female bunny to provide him with companionship. He needs a large double tier hutch and a large attached run/fully secure garden where he will have plenty of space to exercise and explore.

Talbot Road Charity Shop Break-In Fudge, who was featured in the August edition of Focus, is still looking for his forever home!

He is a shy rabbit but his confidence has greatly increased in the time he has been with us. He needs an owner who is willing to invest time into socialising and bonding with him whilst continuing to build his confidence. He is possibly ok to live with a neutered female rabbit but they would need to be introduced slowly at first. Fudge will need a large double tier hutch with an attached run/ secure garden. For more information on the animals featured, please contact the animal centre. Job Vacancy (Part Time Van Driver)

On the evening of Sat 15th / early hours of Sun 16th Dec, our charity shop on Talbot Road, Blackpool was broken into. The man (pictured) smashed his way in through a window. He proceeded to smash up collection boxes, caused damage to a number of doors and stole a number of TV’s as well as a laptop. The police are currently investigating and have released an image of the man in question

We presently have a six month temporary position for a Charity Shop Van Driver available. This vacancy is for 16 hours/ two days a week to cover the collections and deliveries to and from the charity shops in Lancaster, Blackpool and Knott End. Application forms are available from the Animal Centre in Stalmine, by phoning (01253) 703000 between 11:00am and 5:00pm Tuesday - Sunday or by email to enquiries@rspcablackpool.org.uk The closing date for completed application forms is Mon 7th Jan. Christmas Open Day We would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who attended our Christmas Open Day on Sun 25th Nov. It was a great success and we made £1,101.93. All money raised will go towards the continued care of the animals at Longview. Thank you!

GARSTANG CRICKET CLUB A History Evidence about the origins of the club is very patchy although extracts from a Lancaster Cricket Club publication show games played at both Lancaster and Garstang in 1859. There are also entries in a scorebook from Fylde Cricket Club of a game played at Garstang in 1888. Over the years a number of friendlies were played on a wicket prepared on the old showfield site. The club was re-formed in 1949 and played in the Lancaster & District League. It moved to its current home at The Riverside in 1957 and joined the Moore & Smalley Palace Shield Competition in 1970. The club runs three senior teams on a Saturday, along with a Sunday team. There is also a large junior section. Coaches train and manage junior teams at U11s, U13s, U15s age groups which over recent years have won several trophies at both senior and junior levels. It also plan to field an Under 19s team in the 2018 season.

a result of winning the Palace Shield the club has accepted promotion to the Northern League for the 2018 season. The club boasts a total playing membership of 150 members across the various age levels. Fundraising at Garstang Sports Centre Garstang Sports Centre is currently undergoing a building project for the benefit of sport for the future for all our children in Garstang and the surrounding locality. If you wish to make a donation you can do so by contributing to the Garstang Sports Club Building Account Sort Code – 01-03-33, A/c No - 28687310. All donations very gratefully recieved. Over the years the club has had several senior players who have played for the league representative team as well as junior players who have played for the Palace Shield at Wyre district and Lancashire county level teams. The future of Garstang Cricket Club rests with its strong junior membership. The club believes it is just recognition of the efforts of all concerned in areas of child welfare, protection and development of junior cricket and we see this as a stepping stone to further development and the Club going from strength to strength. Recently the club has seen success on the field with, the first team winning the Meyler Cup in 2016, and retaining it in 2017. This was the first part of a historic league and cup double as for the first time in the club’s history the prestigious Palace Shield was added to its trophy cabinet in 2017. As

GARSTANG MEDICAL PRACTICE Care Navigation Ensuring the right clinician and the right appointment for you. At Garstang Medical Practice we have a wide variety of highly skilled clinical staff offering different types of appointments designed to ensure that patients’ medical problems and queries are dealt with as effectively and as quickly as possible by the most appropriate clinician. This may not necessarily be a doctor. We have appointments available with GPs, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses and Practice Pharmacists daily. In addition, specialist Practice Nurses manage patients with conditions such as Diabetes and Asthma. With this in mind, we have made some changes to the way in which our reception staff have been trained to handle your enquiry.

It is important that all patients are dealt with in the same way in order that we ensure the type of appointment you are given is right for you. Through our in-house training programme, developed by the doctors and nurse practitioners, our reception staff have been trained to ask some simple questions to help us to help you. All information is handled with the strictest confidence. The receptionist will ask you for a brief outline of your problem, a description of your symptoms and if this is a new or recurring problem. The answers to these simple questions will be logged in your patient records so that the health professional who does consult with you already has an overview of what the problem is. By asking these simple questions, we can ensure you see the most appropriate clinician best suited to your particular problem, which will enable us to continue to provide you with a high quality, easily accessible service. This ‘care navigation’ work is based upon recent research by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP). We anticipate these changes will improve the way in which patients access our clinicians and appointment system. Thank you for your support. Dr Michael Oliver, On behalf of Garstang Medical Practice Dr Mel John Dr John retired in December and would like to say ‘May I thank all partners, colleagues, staff and patients for their kind words, gifts and cards around my recent retirement. With all best wishes for the future IECHYD DA (Good Health in Welsh)! Mel John’. Happy New Year from all of us at Garstang Medical Practice (01995) 607399
