GARSTANG MILLENNIUM GREEN Over twenty years ago, at a public meeting, David Halford, a Town Councillor and Garstang Town Trustee, outlined plans he had for the fields next to the River Wyre. Although they flooded from time to time he was sure that it would be a great area for everyone to enjoy. This became the Garstang Millennium Green. It certainly has been enjoyed and still is. Throughout the day, every day, people are getting pleasure from visiting the Green. Throughout the year volunteers are working to keep it looking good and others are raising money to pay for its maintenance. This is the work of the Management Team. A second team, the Trustees, has to ensure that the vision for the Green is maintained. The Trustees ensure accountability as required by law and maintain oversight of the financial affairs. They work with the Management Team to produce plans for the
future use and upkeep of the Green. This sounds very grand but it is not an onerous job. The Trustees hold an open AGM and have two or three meetings each year. We need two more people on the team. If you are willing to be a Trustee of the Garstang Millennium Green we would love to meet you. Come and visit one of our meetings and see what we do. Help us to maintain a breathing space for the people who live in or visit Garstang. If you are interested please do contact me. Glynis Jefferson - (Trust Secretary) gjeffe7502@aol.com 07733 087 523

NATURAL PAIN RELIEF A warning light came on, on my car dashboard, last week. I immediately contacted my garage to book my car in for investigations. Unfortunately for me, on the drive to the garage more lights came on and my car suffered a major failure ending with me losing the ability to steer or break! Thank goodness I was doing a few miles an hour and was able to haul it onto the side of the road to await rescue.
warning light and carrying on regardless? That would be a road to catastrophe with your car. The same is true for your body.
I had to pay £102 to get my car picked up to take it the last 500 yards of the journey to the garage – perhaps the most expensive journey for such a short distance that I’ve ever had!
Before ever considering pain relief you should always ask one simple question: Why have I got this pain? Once you have established the ‘why’ you may then head down a suitable pathway to find an answer to your problem.
You may be wondering where I am going with this but it is pertinent to the problem of pain. Pain is the equivalent of a warning light in your car and should always be listened to. Would you ever consider ignoring the car
The habitual use of painkillers and anti inflammatories is effectively putting a sticking plaster over your warning lights so you can carry on regardless and may well eventually lead to the destruction of joints, damaged soft tissues, serious gut problems and even heart disease.
At this point you may then begin looking at whether pain relief is required or not. It is also worth noting that pain can also help wounds heal quicker. Fortunately the natural pain relievers are often gentler acting than modern pharmaceuticals so do not come with the same associated side effects. For traumas and sports injuries arnica creams are excellent. If it involves a bony injury then use comfrey oil – that is the only safe, effective way to help a cracked rib. We also know that Omega 3 EFAs are a really useful anti inflammatory and have other widespread benefits so a good quality fish or flax seed oil should be a staple part of everyone’s diet. Feverfew is an excellent herb for migraine type pain and for congestive headaches. One of the simplest things you can do is put your feet in a basin of hot water for a few minutes. I had a patient who would lose his eyesight when his headaches hit but he found the feet in hot water trick would stop the headache in its tracks.

NATURAL PAIN RELIEF (cont) Magnesium is also excellent for muscle pain and cramps – bathe in it, use an oil on your skin or take one of the many excellent supplements now available. One of the most potent new supplements now available is CBD oil. This can be taken under the tongue or if you get the newer water based versions this can be added to a drink. To ensure it is the highest quality and not an over priced rip off make sure it is made from a full spectrum plant extract – most on the market are not I’m afraid so you will not get the full potential of the miracle that is the cannabis plant. CBD can work within minutes and has many other useful qualitites too, however, it can take 8-12 weeks to get optimum results so do be patient. Interestingly, if you are taking an opiate based pain killer from your doctor CBD will
allow you to take a smaller dose to get the same effects and will also slow down your build up of tolerance to the drug meaning you will get good effects from your opiates on a lower dose for a lot longer. If your back ever ‘goes’ then rule number one is to carefully go down onto all fours, we are after all merely quadrupeds that decided to stand up, and gently move your hips from side to side for 5-10 minutes to allow the blood flow to keep moving and to remove the strain of gravity bearing down on the injury. This can often rapidly help the problem settle. However, above all else – never ignore your pain! Nick Tofalos 07709 321 455

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES
Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?
Dr Finlay Sutton
If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.
Brenda’s Testimonial
Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

FOREST OF BOWLAND AREA OF NATURAL BEAUTY Bowland’s Night Skies Get Star Billing
the Plough to the Milky Way!
From dark sky glamping and astrophotography to starry stories and a pop-up planetarium, Bowland’s first Dark Skies Festival has its gaze firmly upwards.
Running from Sat 16th Feb - Sun 24th Feb the themed week includes guided star gazing and astrophotography with local amateur astronomer, Robert Ince; the chance to book into one of Bentham Golf Club’s glamping pods or lodges and search the dark skies until the wee hours; wrap up warm and listen to nocturnal tales with storyteller, Sue Allonby and an invitation to step inside Yorkshire Planetarium’s mobile dome for night-sky films with the wow factor.
The Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) has been officially recognised as having some of the darkest skies in England - a fact being celebrated next month with a week of special events during half-term. Hetty Byrne, Sustainable Tourism Officer for the AONB said, ‘Light pollution means that truly dark skies are becoming increasingly rare. With our Dark Skies Festival we want people to discover the magical sight of the planets and constellations visible above Bowland. The longer nights of winter are good for star gazing and, given the right conditions, you can feast your eyes on everything from
‘Bowland is beautiful during the day’, said Hetty, ‘but seeing its star-filled skies at night is a fantastic experience. We advise early booking as the events are likely to be popular.’ Visitors wanting to stay and explore the area for a little longer can choose from a number of Dark Sky Friendly businesses - many of them accommodation providers

GARSTANG FAIRTRADE Mon 25th Feb to Sun 10th March is Fairtrade Fortnight and the theme this year is Cocoa.
page (just search for Garstang Fairtrade Facebook).
We have decided that we are going to feature chocolate and help find out where you can buy Fairtrade chocolate and make a difference to the lives of cocoa farmers and their families around the world.
If any individual or organisation is organising anything to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight please email us at garstangfairtrade@ gmail.com and we will include it on our list of events on our Facebook page.
For Fairtrade Fortnight we are looking to work with our local primary schools where pupils thoughts on Fairtrade chocolate, decorated on a cocoa bean picture, will be displayed in participating businesses.
Life is tough for cocoa farmers. The price of cocoa beans has slumped in recent years despite high demand. Disease and age are damaging cocoa trees and few young people are becoming cocoa farmers because of the poor prospects.
Prizes for the best entries will be Fairtrade chocolate eggs donated by the Mustard Seed Cafe. Also the Independent Garstang Traders will be setting up a children’s Fairtrade Trail and we are putting on an exhibition in the Library entitled ‘She Deserves A Living Wage’. Look out for further information on our Facebook
Fairtrade helps to make cocoa farming in places like Ivory Coast and Ghana more sustainable by guaranteeing minimum prices and providing a premium to invest in local communities, so farmers can provide a better future for themselves and their families. And you can give them this opportunity just by

WYRE FLOOD FORUM This is a forum for those communities affected by flooding, whether from overflowing rivers, under capacity road drains, surface water or incursion from the sea. It meets under the Chairmanship of Wyre Council once a quarter at the Civic Centre Poulton, usually on Thursdays at 1:00pm. So full is the agenda that meetings last up to four hours. The next meeting is on Thurs 7th March and the draft minutes of the December meeting can be downloaded from the Wyre Council website. They are very full and will form the basis of the next agenda. They are also a good source of information. Attendance is usually in the region of 50 drawn from Wyre and LCC engineering officers, the Environment Agency who have direct responsibility for flood prevention, United Utilities who are responsible with the LCC for road surface drainage, Natural England who have responsibility for conservation
and habitats, County, District and Town and Parish councillors and crucially members of the FLAGs, Flood Action Groups made up of local residents with a particular interest in ensuring that resources are properly deployed and intelligence is relayed to the appropriate agency. Professional officers of the above mentioned public bodies make scientific presentations on a wide range of topics often brought to their attention by the FLAGs and are routinely questioned robustly often by residents who have a particular professional background. The energy and dedication of the members of FLAGs cannot be doubted. In December presentations were made by EA about their responsibility for the maintenance of 13,000 ‘assets’ including banks, ditches and pumping stations throughout Lancashire and Cumbria and the priority that has to be applied to resources. Hambleton resident vigorously questioned the costly ‘over engineering’ of a local project which, he claimed would not perform the job intended. It is these sort of interventions that make the Forum influential.
The Garstang group will start again on Thurs 7th Feb at 2:00pm in the URC hall.
Other items included the communication of warnings and preparedness and reports from Local Flood Action Groups including those down stream of Garstang namely, Churchtown, Tarnacre and St Michaels all of whom have a keen interest in the behaviour of the River Wyre throughout the year. The Garstang FLAG would like to hear from anyone with an interest in keeping watch on the river, reporting significant changes and helping to communicate information to owners of vulnerable properties. If you can help please contact John Ibison (John. Ibison@wyre.gov.uk) or myself. Roger Brooks rogerwilliambrooks@outlook.com
2018 was a year of celebrations - 15 years at Garstang, and 25 years for the two Preston groups (Fulwood on Tuesday evenings, and Ashton on Friday mornings). So many charities have benefited from money raised at concerts over the years, when singers from all the groups can take part if they are free. The main charity last year was supporting North West Blood Bikes, raising over £1300. The charity for 2019 will be supporting research into Parkinsons Disease. We will be arranging a concert later in the year. However, other organisations arrange their own events and we sing for them! SOROPTIMISTS Women inspiring action, transforming lives Northwest Soroptimists Week of Action The week commencing Mon 14th Jan saw the first Week of Action by Soroptimists in the North West – a week in which we tried to highlight the work being done throughout the region on a common theme of Mental Health. We’ve started off small this year, but it’s amazing how much happens quietly – and in the case of the Grange-over-Sands and Pendleside clubs who run ‘Singing for Memory’ groups then not so quietly! In Garstang, we had a speaker covering the topic of Mindfulness. We are always keen to help others but what about us? Shouldn’t we
look after our own mental health? How does anyone cope looking after someone else if they are not well themselves? Building on that we will also be tackling our own physical well-being in February with an exercise class. There are many reasons why physical activity is good for your body – having a healthy heart and improving your joints and bones are just two, but did you know that physical activity is also beneficial for your mental health and wellbeing? And in a few months we will also be hearing a speaker from MIND talking about building a Happier Lancashire – more on the topic later. Foodbank Donations At least twice a year, we make a collection of food/cleaning/personal hygiene products to donate to our nearest foodbank. We do our collections in January/February ,as there is always a lull after the Christmas festivities, and again in July as children break up for their school holidays and parents lose the benefit of school meals to keep their little ones fed. Please continue to drop off your used backpacks or other items at The Mustard Seed Café, Park Hill Road (opposite the Wheat Sheaf Pub). They are open Thurs, Fri and Sat 10:00am to 2:00pm. Or ring us to arrange collection. New Year – New You? It’s a new year but should we continue to make the same small predictable resolutions to our own lives or is it time to resolve to make the big change and join an organisation that resolves to make living better for everyone?

BEN WALLACE MP Well here we are well and truly forging into 2019. As you will no doubt have seen things are moving quickly in Westminster and it remains an extremely busy period and important time for the country and its future. During this time of national importance it is vital that as your local MP I continue to carry out my duties within the constituency and I have been doing just that. I would like to thank the many residents I have spoken to for sharing their views with me as I travel around. Highway issues are always well represented in my mailbag and I am pleased to see more resurfacing and major patching being carried out in many areas including the A588 from Hambleton to Stalmine. Although road works
36
can cause inconvenience, the works are necessary as preparation for the significant investment (from the Safer Roads Fund) in the whole length of the road later this year. While on a recent constituency day I visited the Royal Preston Hospital where I was interviewed by the Hospital Radio Station. I also visited Blackpool Victoria Hospital just before Christmas and being in the hospitals during the winter months before and after Christmas reminded me of the outstanding job our doctors, nurses, hospital staff and all emergency services do on our behalf. Across the constituency, and the county, the roll out of superfast broadband stalled for several months last year as Openreach had sought to increase its charges. Lancashire was not the only county affected and as a consequence Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK), part of the Department for

and that I hammer home to him the views of constituents.
I am pleased to report that BDUK reached an agreement with Openreach at the end of last year and as a result Lancashire County Council can resume its roll out, although with some delay.
I also hope he will set out the Agency’s priorities for our constituency over the next few years, so that I can lobby Ministers for the necessary funding.
You can learn more about the County’s superfast broadband project here: www.lancashire.gov.uk/council/ strategies-policies-plans/corporate/ superfast-broadband/ In last month’s article I mentioned how unpredictable the weather is and how real the risk of flooding is in many areas. With this in mind I am meeting Keith Ashcroft in the next couple of days. Mr Ashcroft is the Environment Agency’s Area Director for Cumbria and Lancashire. It is vital that I keep up to date with what the Agency is doing
I have also mentioned before the great work local Flood Action Groups do and the importance of their presence at Wyre’s Flood Forum meetings. The Flood Forums are a great opportunity for the local groups to get answers from all agencies and local elected representatives. For some years now I have facilitated a visit to Parliament by the Principals of Sixth Form Colleges throughout Lancashire. The visit consists of meetings with Ministers and various officials and gives the Principals an opportunity to highlight the challenges they are facing. The visits are always culminated with a dinner. I am very proud of the Sixth

Wed 6th March 7.30pm United Reformed Church Hall Croston Road, Garstang Garstang Millennium Green Trust is pleased to present a talk by Gail Armstrong from the North Lancashire Bat Group on the subject of ‘Why We Should All Love Bats’. Bats often get a bad press. From phrases such as ‘Blind as a bat’ and ‘like a bat out of hell’, to people being described as ‘batty’ - Why do bats attract so many negative associations? According to Gail we should be thinking of them in a more positive light. Have you ever seen a bat? Or wondered where and how they live? What difference do they make to our lives? Perhaps you should come along and see if we can persuade you to love them.

CAT SMITH MP I know many of you travelling around Over Wyre throughout January and February will have had a miserable time due to the diversions in place as a result of roadworks. I’ve also been concerned about the lack of a bus service during school hours. I’ve been in touch with both Blackpool Transport, the operators of the 2C bus service and the Highways Authority at Lancashire County Council. If you’d like to see the response to my concerns please visit my website www.catsmith.co.uk If you are still having problems and would like to raise them with me then please contact me via cat.smith.mp@parliament.uk or call my office on (01253) 490440.

CAT SMITH MP (cont) support to people across the constituency. In February I’m highlighting the incredible work of Macmillan Cancer Support. As well as helping with the medical needs of people affected by cancer, Macmillan also looks at the social, emotional and practical impact cancer can have, and campaigns for better cancer care. If you’d like to learn more, or find out more about what I’ve been doing, then do please have a look on my website. I’ve been asked to warn constituents that there’s been an increase in the reporting of malicious calls, voicemails, text messages or emails to members of the public from callers saying they’re from HM Revenue and Customs. Fraudsters claim that as a result of nonpayment of tax or other duty, the victim is liable to prosecution or repossession of belongings to settle the balance - but that they can avoid this by arranging for payment to be made immediately by bank transfers or even by iTunes gift cards. Please remember to always question requests for your personal or financial information. Just because someone knows your basic details such as your name and contact details doesn’t mean they are genuine. I know many of you in Over Wyre will use Lancaster station as a gateway for travelling north and south. In the last few months I’ve been working hard to drive the argument for HS2 to stop at Lancaster. High Speed 2 is a high-speed railway which, when completed, will directly connect London, Birmingham, the East Midlands, Leeds and Manchester. Scheduled to open in phases between 2026 and 2033, high-speed trains will travel up to 400 km/h on 330 miles of track. Importantly the service will allow for more capacity
meaning the days of overcrowding and standing-room-only should become confined to the history books. I’m grateful to Lancaster University for hosting the inaugural meeting of local stakeholders who joined me recently to agree our case for Lancaster’s connection to the HS2 network. Those who attended came from the Chamber of Commerce, Business, Lancaster BID, the Fire and Rescue Service, EDF Energy, Morecambe BID, Lancashire County Council, Digital Lancashire, Lancaster City Council, Lancaster Vision, University of Cumbria and the Port of Heysham. We will continue to work together to spell out the compelling case for HS2 to stop at Lancaster. At present I am in discussions with the Department for Transport, Lancashire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport and Dave Colbert, a specialist

CAT SMITH MP (cont) advisor in Transport Planning at Lancashire County Council. I’ve also met with Transport for the North, the body that brings together the North’s 20 local transport authorities, business leaders, Network Rail, Highways England, and HS2 Ltd.
Further details and tickets from Mary Mason.
They work with Central Government to enable the North to speak with one voice on the transport infrastructure investment needed to drive transformational growth and rebalance the UK economy.
New members / visitors are always welcome at The Garstang Bridge Club located at The Garstang Sports and Social Club, High St, Garstang PR3 1FA.
I will be meeting with the HS2 Minister Nusrat Ghani in the near future to push our case. I’ll update you on our progress again shortly. On the subject of trains there’s been a 16 per cent rise in rail passenger complaints. Across the country rail services are in meltdown. Punctuality has nosedived as fares have soared at more than twice the rate of wages since 2010 so it is no surprise that passenger complaints have rocketed. Passengers are fed up of overpaying to travel on overcrowded and unreliable services. It’s clear that the privatised railway is broken and the travelling public want change. That is why Labour will take the railway into public ownership to improve services and hold fares down. I write this as I’m about to get on a train to go back to Westminster. Wish me luck! Have a great February everyone. Cat Smith MP

ST JOHN’S HOSPICE Wills Week Mon 4th - Fri 8th February
and details of how to book an appointment.
St John’s Hospice will be holding its very first Wills Week in February.
Keeping an up to date and professionally drafted Will is very important. It helps to secure the future for family and friends and is one of the most important things that everyone, at some point in their life, has to consider.
This innovative scheme sees a host of local, reputable solicitors waive their Will-writing fee in return for a donation to our charity. In return for a professionally prepared Will your donation will help us fund our specialised care in your community. Making a Will always seems to be on everyone’s ‘to do’ list. Well here is your opportunity to finally tick it off that list.
Having a valid Will allows you to provide for your loved ones after you have gone and is a certain way to make sure your wishes will be carried out. It will also ease the burden on those left behind who will handle your affairs.
If you’re interested in securing an appointment for Wills Week – which runs from Mon 4th - Fri 8th Feb - please call our office on (01524) 382538 or email giftsinwills@ sjhospice.org.uk to register for a Wills Information Pack. This pack will contain useful information as you start preparing to make a Will, a list of our partner solicitors

Sasha is an energetic, friendly and excitable lady who loves to be the centre of attention. She is a strong but well-mannered girl on her gencon lead. She enjoys going out on walks and exploring her environment. Although she will happily walk with familiar dogs she prefers the company of people therefore would be much better suited to a single dog household where she can have all the love she deserves. An owner with previous experience of large breeds is essential. Whilst Sasha is affectionate she isn’t suited to a home with young children due to her large size and boisterous nature. She has so much potential and deserves a
second chance in a new forever home. Garfy Garfy is a super handsome and friendly senior catizen. On arrival, Garfy was extremely poorly and needed emergency life saving surgery which was a success (this can be discussed with staff in further detail). He is fighting fit again and eager to find a loving retirement home to call his own where he can relax and enjoy a peaceful life. He is a smashing lad with a mighty loud purr and meow who enjoys company, is always happy to make friends with you and loves nothing more than his food and a good fuss. Garfy loves being brushed which is great as he is semi-long haired so will need regular grooming to prevent his coat from getting matted. This affectionate fella will make a great addition and a brilliant pet for someone but may take a few days to find his bearings. Due to his age, we think Garfy is better suited to a quiet stress free household without children and he may be suitable to live with a calm cat. Hopper Hopper has found himself a stray on the lookout for a new home to call his own. He is a very friendly rabbit with a confident nature. He is fine being handled and enjoys being groomed which is a great way to bond with him! We would like Hopper to be rehomed alongside an existing neutered female rabbit with a relaxed nature as we think Hopper

LIONS Donations A decision was made to pledge a sum of £250 to Garstang in Bloom in support of their springtime project to build a memorial garden as a tribute to Nora Hoyles in recognition of the substantial contribution she made to our local community. It was also agreed to give £200 towards the expansion of the very successful Duke of Edinburgh’s programme organised through Garstang Academy to purchase equipment such as portable cooking stoves and rucksacks to allow even more students to participate in these worthwhile enrichment activities. The Lions Club will soon be making another delivery to Fylde Women’s Aid. They have a continued need for new clothing items
(babies, small children or ladies), new toys, new cosmetics or new toiletries.
