OVER WYRE ART SOCIETY We had a great turnout at the first meeting of 2019 at which two new members were welcomed. It was straight to work as we quickly sketched our models Elaine and Rod, posed in varied costumes at ten minute intervals. This exercise encouraged us to look for contour outlines and disregard detail or even concentrate on just one of the models. I do believe we improved at each stage or if not at least had a laugh. Several paintings were sold at the St. Annes exhibition in December. We put the rest on display at our centre before collection. Our next exhibition is from Sat 9th Feb until Fri 22nd Feb at Poulton Library. Please have a look if you are in the area. A local resident has kindly donated some unwanted art materials which will be sold or

used at the club by our members. We asked our members for ideas when planning next year’s syllabus. We ensured there will be some new demonstrators with lots of ideas in different mediums, also time for practising. We have an oil painting workshop with Bob Goldsboro on Sat 2nd Feb. Please contact me if interested to check if last minute places are available. February Programme •

NATURAL PAIN RELIEF A warning light came on, on my car dashboard, last week. I immediately contacted my garage to book my car in for investigations. Unfortunately for me, on the drive to the garage more lights came on and my car suffered a major failure ending with me losing the ability to steer or break! Thank goodness I was doing a few miles an hour and was able to haul it onto the side of the road to await rescue.

warning light and carrying on regardless? That would be a road to catastrophe with your car. The same is true for your body.

I had to pay £102 to get my car picked up to take it the last 500 yards of the journey to the garage – perhaps the most expensive journey for such a short distance that I’ve ever had!

Before ever considering pain relief you should always ask one simple question: Why have I got this pain? Once you have established the ‘why’ you may then head down a suitable pathway to find an answer to your problem.

You may be wondering where I am going with this but it is pertinent to the problem of pain. Pain is the equivalent of a warning light in your car and should always be listened to. Would you ever consider ignoring the car

20

The habitual use of painkillers and anti inflammatories is effectively putting a sticking plaster over your warning lights so you can carry on regardless and may well eventually lead to the destruction of joints, damaged soft tissues, serious gut problems and even heart disease.

At this point you may then begin looking at whether pain relief is required or not. It is also worth noting that pain can also help wounds heal quicker.

NATURAL PAIN RELIEF (cont) Fortunately the natural pain relievers are often gentler acting than modern pharmaceuticals so do not come with the same associated side effects. For traumas and sports injuries arnica creams are excellent. If it involves a bony injury then use comfrey oil – that is the only safe, effective way to help a cracked rib. We also know that Omega 3 EFAs are a really useful anti inflammatory and have other widespread benefits so a good quality fish or flax seed oil should be a staple part of everyone’s diet. Feverfew is an excellent herb for migraine type pain and for congestive headaches. One of the simplest things you can do is put your feet in a basin of hot water for a few minutes. I had a patient who would lose his eyesight when his headaches hit but he found the feet in hot water trick would stop

the headache in its tracks. Magnesium is also excellent for muscle pain and cramps – bathe in it, use an oil on your skin or take one of the many excellent supplements now available. One of the most potent new supplements now available is CBD oil. This can be taken under the tongue or if you get the newer water based versions this can be added to a drink. To ensure it is the highest quality and not an over priced rip off make sure it is made from a full spectrum plant extract – most on the market are not I’m afraid so you will not get the full potential of the miracle that is the cannabis plant. CBD can work within minutes and has many other useful qualitites too, however, it can take 8-12 weeks to get optimum results so do be patient.

NATURAL PAIN RELIEF (cont)

MESSY CHURCH

Interestingly, if you are taking an opiate based pain killer from your doctor CBD will allow you to take a smaller dose to get the same effects and will also slow down your build up of tolerance to the drug meaning you will get good effects from your opiates on a lower dose for a lot longer.

Sat 16th Feb 4:00pm - 6:00pm Lighthouse Community Church

If your back ever ‘goes’ then rule number one is to carefully go down onto all fours, we are after all merely quadrupeds that decided to stand up, and gently move your hips from side to side for 5-10 minutes to allow the blood flow to keep moving and to remove the strain of gravity bearing down on the injury. This can often rapidly help the problem settle.

We hope you will be able to come and join us at our next Messy Church. This is an opportunity to come and share in a time of fun activities for all the family! There will be crafts! There will be mess! There will be celebration! And there will be food! All children must be accompanied by an adult. There is no charge for Messy Church - we simply ask for a donation to help us cover the cost of the craft activities and the food! We would love to see you there!

However, above all else – never ignore your pain!

Let us know if you are coming so that we can make sure we we’ve catered for you! Contact us on email: lighthousecommunityknottend@ gmaill.com or via our Facebook page: www. facebood.com/knottendpreesall/ or by texting 07512 922 983.

10-N-IN CHORAL GROUP Sat 23rd Feb 7:30pm St. Anne`s Church, Singleton A Happy New Year! Thurs 3rd Jan saw the 10-N-In Choral Group (10-N-IN stands for 10 rehearsals before going in for the concert) start their concentrated series of intensive rehearsals in preparation for their 2019 concert. Numbers in the choir are at a record high and we are hoping to give another top quality performance. The theme for this year`s concert is ‘Bach to the Future’. The choir will be singing some movements from Bach`s Mass in B minor, and sections of his Magnificat in D. The future will be represented through modern jazz arrangements of Bach`s music in the style of the Swingle Singers. Once again we are looking forward to being joined by Lindsay Benson (Flute) and Russel Irwin (Bassoon) alongside renowned soprano soloist Jane Irwin.

Do come and join us for what should be a tremendous evening of music. For tickets and further information please give me a ring. John Highton (01253) 892077

WYRE FLOOD FORUM This is a forum for those communities affected by flooding, whether from overflowing rivers, under capacity road drains, surface water or incursion from the sea. It meets under the Chairmanship of Wyre Council once a quarter at the Civic Centre Poulton, usually on Thursdays at 1:00pm. So full is the agenda that meetings last up to four hours. The next meeting is on Thurs 7th March and the draft minutes of the December meeting can be downloaded from the Wyre Council website. They are very full and will form the basis of the next agenda. They are also a good source of information. Attendance is usually in the region of 50 drawn from Wyre and LCC engineering officers, the Environment Agency who have direct responsibility for flood prevention, United Utilities who are responsible with the LCC for road surface drainage, Natural England who have responsibility for conservation and habitats, County, District and Town and Parish councillors and crucially members of the FLAGs, Flood Action Groups made up of local residents with a particular interest in ensuring that resources are properly deployed and intelligence is relayed to the appropriate agency. Professional officers of the above mentioned public bodies make scientific presentations on a wide range of topics often brought to their attention by the FLAGs and are routinely questioned robustly often by residents who have a particular professional background. The energy and dedication of the members of FLAGs cannot be doubted. In December presentations were made by EA about their responsibility for the maintenance of 13,000 ‘assets’ including banks, ditches and pumping stations throughout Lancashire and Cumbria and the priority that has to be applied to resources. For example, a Hambleton resident vigorously questioned

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES

Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?

Dr Finlay Sutton

If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.

Brenda’s Testimonial

Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

the costly ‘over engineering’ of a local project which, he claimed would not perform the job intended. It is these sort of interventions that make the Forum influential.

Bowland’s Night Skies Get Star Billing

Other items included the communication of warnings and preparedness and reports from Local Flood Action Groups including those down stream of Garstang namely, Churchtown, Tarnacre and St Michaels all of whom have a keen interest in the behaviour of the River Wyre throughout the year.

From dark sky glamping and astrophotography to starry stories and a pop-up planetarium, Bowland’s first Dark Skies Festival has its gaze firmly upwards. The Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) has been officially recognised as having some of the darkest skies in England - a fact being celebrated next month with a week of special events during half-term.

The Garstang FLAG would like to hear from anyone with an interest in keeping watch on the river, reporting significant changes and helping to communicate information to owners of vulnerable properties. If you can help please contact John Ibison (John. Ibison@wyre.gov.uk) or myself.

Hetty Byrne, Sustainable Tourism Officer for the AONB said, ‘Light pollution means that truly dark skies are becoming increasingly rare.

CARDIAC RISK in the YOUNG (CRY) whose story is all of these and more, and this year he intends to add a chapter for CRY. Step forward the charismatic Mr Michael Coleran – possibly better known around these parts as the chimney sweep, Bert, or as Worzel Gummidge! Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund Together with a very kind donation from Garstang Ukulele Group, the beautifully melodic voices of Choir 1 carolling in Booths could not have brought what has been an incredible year for Matt’s Fund to a more harmonious end, and with the heavenly scent of orange zest simmering away as I write (ready to make Paddington jam for our coffee morning in March), 2019 is looking to be pretty amazing too. The year begins with our most important event – the CRY Heart Screening on Sat 2nd & Sun 3rd Feb, at Garstang Community Academy. We look forward to welcoming the 200 young people aged 14 - 35 who have appointments, and hope that all goes well for them. If you have a place booked and aren’t able to attend please do let CRY/us know so that your place can be re-allocated. At the screening weekend we are also holding a clothing collection to help fund further screenings. If you have clean, wearable clothing, paired shoes, belts, handbags etc that you would like to donate please bring items along to the Academy over the weekend from 9:00am – 3:30pm each day. One of the loveliest aspects of our work is that we get to meet some remarkable people and hear their stories. Some of these are very poignant; some can be enlightening, humorous, intriguing or incredibly inspirational. Last year we were delighted to not only meet, but to welcome someone to the Team (along with his lovely wife Jo, who I have had the pleasure of knowing for some years now),

Mike is to cycle 900 miles solo, from the Isle of Wight to the Isle of Lewis setting off on April 1st (yes, he knows it’s April Fools day). He’s out and about now training so if you see him around give him a wave to spur him on. If you’d like to read more of his story, or maybe drop a donation his way, please go to: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ MichaelColeran/4 For further information please contact me or see our facebook page. – which together with the recent discovery that Cromwell had included musicians in his purge of art, suggests these two may have died at the hands of a Roundhead iconoclast.

It was clear from the wounds to their skulls that these two young people had died violently and were then left to rot in the marshy edges of the River Wyre to decay and disappear.

Fortunately today you can play the ukulele in Garstang without fear of death, so long as you can play C6 and Am7. Come and join us at the Garstang Arts Centre each Sunday from 2:00pm - 4:00pm.

What was unclear in 1936 was the reason for their slaying although two possibilities were proffered at the time. Had they been set upon by a gang of thieves, killed and robbed? Or were they lovers who had fallen foul of their families and become victims of an honour killing? Recent re-examination of the objects found with them has suggested another possibility. Eliza’s father had a photographic studio in Wigan town centre where she worked for him. Into the studio came this young man by the name of Edward Henry Plantagenet McCoughlin, who qualified as a doctor after serving his apprenticeship from the age of 14. He was an avowed atheist and gave talks about his philosophy which Eliza eagerly attended. They fell in love and set up home in Southport. No wedding for her as Henry said ‘No man can make a woman his’, which was in accord with his atheist feelings but against what was, in the 1890’s, accepted social behaviour.

HAMBLETON WI (cont) They were very modern and in fact bought bicycles to ride around Southport and chose Christmas day to preach atheism outside a church in Duke Street, which caused a commotion. CAT SMITH MP I know many of you travelling around Over Wyre throughout January and February will have had a miserable time due to the diversions in place as a result of roadworks. I’ve also been concerned about the lack of a bus service during school hours. I’ve been in touch with both Blackpool Transport, the operators of the 2C bus service and the Highways Authority at Lancashire County Council. If you’d like to see the response to my concerns please visit my website www.catsmith.co.uk If you are still having problems and would like to raise them with me then please contact me via cat.smith.mp@parliament.uk or call my office on (01253) 490440. taking place in the House of Commons and huge uncertainty over the future direction of the country. Consequently, even though this issue is high on the agenda I can’t address it in more detail for fear everything will have changed again by the time you read this! Again, if you do have concerns or you wish your voice to be heard then do please get in touch. I’ve once again had a significant number of people who live on park home holiday sites contact me regarding their status and rights. I’m currently looking into this issue and will provide more information when I have it. If you live on any of the sites in Over Wyre and have concerns then do please contact my office on the above number. Every month on my website I feature one of the special charities that provide so much support to people across the constituency. In February I’m highlighting the incredible

I know many of you in Over Wyre will use Lancaster station as a gateway for travelling north and south. In the last few months I’ve been working hard to drive the argument for HS2 to stop at Lancaster.

I’ve been asked to warn constituents that there’s been an increase in the reporting of malicious calls, voicemails, text messages or emails to members of the public from callers saying they’re from HM Revenue and Customs. Fraudsters claim that as a result of nonpayment of tax or other duty, the victim is liable to prosecution or repossession of belongings to settle the balance - but that they can avoid this by arranging for payment to be made immediately by bank transfers or

I’m grateful to Lancaster University for hosting the inaugural meeting of local stakeholders who joined me recently to agree our case for Lancaster’s connection to the HS2 network. Those who attended came from the Chamber of Commerce, Business, Lancaster BID, the Fire and Rescue Service, EDF Energy, Morecambe BID, Lancashire County Council, Digital Lancashire, Lancaster City Council, Lancaster Vision, University of Cumbria and the Port of Heysham. We will continue to work together to spell out the compelling case for HS2 to stop at Lancaster. At present I am in discussions with the Department for Transport, Lancashire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport and Dave Colbert, a specialist advisor in Transport Planning at Lancashire County Council. I’ve also met with Transport for the North, the body that brings together

the North’s 20 local transport authorities, business leaders, Network Rail, Highways England, and HS2 Ltd. They work with Central Government to enable the North to speak with one voice on the transport infrastructure investment needed to drive transformational growth and rebalance the UK economy. I will be meeting with the HS2 Minister Nusrat Ghani in the near future to push our case. I’ll update you on our progress again shortly. On the subject of trains there’s been a 16 per cent rise in rail passenger complaints. Across the country rail services are in meltdown. Punctuality has nosedived as fares have soared at more than twice the rate of wages since 2010 so it is no surprise that passenger complaints have rocketed. Passengers are fed up of overpaying to travel on overcrowded and unreliable services. It’s

NO GAS STORAGE Most of you will be aware that after a quiet six months (publicly at least) from May 2018, both Halite Energy Group Ltd and Anglesey LNG Ltd were taken over by Cheshire Energy, the NPL group at the end of the year. This process is ongoing with recent changes to the board of directors and micro-accounts having been submitted for both companies up to December 2017. Previous board members have resigned and

Mr Robert McFarlane and Mr Simon Towers from NPL have joined current Chief Executive Keith Budinger on the Halite board. Many will know of the NPL group in Wyre due to their stewardship of some of the legacy brine wells and their investments in Thornton at the Hillhouse International site. The NPL group has an interest in gas storage and energy projects as they already own King Street Energy - a fully consented gas storage project that is on hold due to the HS2 route blocking that going forward for now. They also have an interest in the permissions and synergies for connecting to the national gas transmission infrastructure at Nateby because of plans for the gas-powered power station in Thornton. Presumably there is also a general interest because of their work of reclaiming contaminated land for other purposes. The

NO GAS STORAGE (cont) power station and gas storage are not directly linked though. Both will feed into the national grid separately. Halite Energy has since attended a community meeting at Knott End Golf Club in December 2018 as well as organising a meeting themselves of the official Community Liaison Panel in Fleetwood. At both meetings Mr Budinger presented a capability statement on the new owners, a fact sheet on the project and at the Community Liaison Panel there was more information on the timeline. All documents are available on our website www.nogasstorage.co.uk under the section Our Campaign / Meetings and Events and as posts on our Facebook page. Phase 1 of the project is the haul road from the A588 Hall Gate Lane. This is now planned to start in summer/autumn 2019 and will take approximately four months.

Local experts also have concerns about the amount of water available to make the caverns to be taken from Fleetwood Docks, the depth of the water that the brine outfall will run into at Rossall, and believe that the brine will be trapped along the Fleetwood coastline due to other pipes already in place and the tidal patterns. Monitoring plans for the brine discharge have still to be submitted to and then passed by the Marine Monitoring Group. These will be vital and it is extremely important that monitoring is continuous, live and publicly available. If the discharge breaches the levels of salinity set in the Development Consent Order the discharge would be stopped until the Environment Agency has assessed what happened and that it can start again. Community monitoring will also be important and we will provide more information in the coming months, including the access road,

Most of the requirements have been passed for this already by Wyre Council with a few outstanding issues on dust management, drainage and street layout at time of writing. Five caverns have also been identified for the first phase of construction where Halite assess there is the deepest salt. Halite anticipate they will be ready with the first gas on-line by December 2022. A map of where these first caverns will be is available on our website and Facebook page or you can contact Halite Energy from their website for more information. The Development Consent Order is extremely complex, however, and there are still several serious issues for Halite to overcome, not least linked to the brine outfall pipe. Noise level limits in the Development Consent Order relating to drilling under the River Wyre will be difficult not to breach. Laying the pipeline itself will be very difficult as we have witnessed at Anchorsholme.

RNLI Volunteers Needed at Fleetwood RNLI Fleetwood RNLI are calling on local people, who wish to volunteer with the lifesaving charity, to come forward now. Shore Crew at Fleetwood lifeboat station are now progressing onto lifeboat training and Lifeboat Operations Manager, Captain David Eccles, needs several replacements. He said, ‘Our Shore Crew are now training on our lifeboats so, we’re looking for local people to join us, initially as Shore Crew, before hopefully, progressing as they are now, onto the lifeboats. We want to have new crew members in place by the end of February, so we can actively train over the Summer.’ Volunteers need to be fit and be able to show commitment to both their extensive training and their colleagues. Being called out to help launch the lifeboats in the middle of the night, is also a distinct possibility! ‘The sea is very unpredictable, the weather unforgiving at times, but there’s no feeling like it, when you come back off a call-out, knowing you’ve helped save somebody’s life.’ said Coxswain Tony Cowell. ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to join a great team, who really do make a difference’. People interested in volunteering for the RNLI at Fleetwood and want to find out more about the role, should call at the Lifeboat Station at 7:15pm on Tuesday evenings for a chat with the Lifeboat Operations Manager. THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Over Wyre Branch In last month’s issue I informed you that the Poppy Appeal total for our District was a magnificent £8308.83p. Well that amount earned us a Lancashire RBL County certificate for 3rd Joan Bailey 07528 173891 place for those Poppy Appeal Districts with the www.ladybirdcomputing.co.uk highest increase in Poppy Appeal collections info@ladybirdcomputing.co.uk over the past three years for Districts whose Located in Pilling covering the Over Wyre area collections are under £15,000. The certificate was collected at the RBL Lancashire County Conference in Darwen on Sat 12th Jan and it was with great pride that our Branch Chairman – Jackie Burn – collected the certificate on the Branch’s behalf. This is the first time that the Over Wyre Poppy Appeal District has won a certificate and whilst it is awarded to the PA District, in reality, the honour and praise belongs to all those in our area who donated. At the same County Conference both the Branch Chairman and the Branch Secretary – Jackie and Bill Burn – were awarded Lancashire County Certificates of Appreciation for their work and dedication to the Royal British Legion in both the Lancashire County and Nationally. Planning is now underway looking into when and which of the various villages etc within a 10 mile radius will be holding galas or fetes in 2019 so that we can apply for a pitch where we can spread the word of the Royal British Legion and what it does to ease the hardship plight of those who have or are serving in the Armed Forces and their families. We are also planning to send a delegate to the Royal British Legion National Conference in May to be held in Bournemouth.

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION (cont) Although it is some time away the Branch will, again, be working with the Preesall Town Council etc in the arrangements for 2019 Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service – Sun 10th Nov - as well as the commemoration Experienced Counsellor offering support with: of the signing of the 11-11-11 Armistice that Depression, Stress or Anxiety ended the 1st World War – that will be held at Bereavement 11 o’clock on Mon 11th Nov at Bank Corner, Couples Counselling Knott End. The next meeting of the Over Wyre Royal British Legion Branch will be on Thurs 14th Feb at 2:30pm in the Preesall Youth and Community Centre. A cup of tea/coffee and a biscuit will be available so hope to see some of you there. We know there are ex-Servicemen and women in our community as we saw them wearing their berets and medals at the 2018 Remembrance Service and Parade as well as some who are still serving. It is an organisation for you and your families and if you want the Legion to carry on caring in the future – as it has done in the past – then your support is needed. GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS Donations A decision was made to pledge a sum of £250 to Garstang in Bloom in support of their springtime project to build a memorial garden as a tribute to Nora Hoyles in recognition of the substantial contribution she made to our local community. It was also agreed to give £200 towards the expansion of the very successful Duke of Edinburgh’s programme organised through Garstang Academy to purchase equipment such as portable cooking stoves and rucksacks to allow even more students to participate in these worthwhile enrichment activities. The Lions Club will soon be making another delivery to Fylde Women’s Aid. They have

a continued need for new clothing items (babies, small children or ladies), new toys, new cosmetics or new toiletries. This appeal is ongoing with our collection point being the Resource Centre (the offices of the old Liberal Club) on Bridge Street. RSPCA Special Appeals

Garfy Sasha

Sasha is an energetic, friendly and excitable lady who loves to be the centre of attention. She is a strong but well-mannered girl on her gencon lead and enjoys going out on walks. Although she will happily walk with familiar dogs she prefers the company of people therefore would be much better suited to a single dog household where she can have all the love she deserves. An owner with previous experience of large breeds is essential. Whilst Sasha is affectionate she isn’t suited to a home with young children due to her large size and boisterous nature. She has so much potential and deserves a second chance in a new forever home.

Garfy is a super handsome and friendly senior catizen. On arrival, Garfy was extremely poorly and needed emergency life saving surgery which was a success (this can be discussed with staff in further detail). He is fighting fit again and eager to find a loving retirement home to call his own where he can relax and enjoy a peaceful life. He is a smashing lad with a mighty loud purr and meow who enjoys company, is always happy to make friends with you and loves nothing more than his food and a good fuss. Garfy loves being brushed which is great as he is semi-long haired so will need regular grooming to prevent his coat from getting matted.

We would like Hopper to be rehomed alongside an existing neutered female rabbit with a relaxed nature as we think Hopper will be the confident one in the relationship. A large

FLEETWOOD FLYERS Football closed for Christmas much to the disappointment of the hardy walkers. The sessions started back in Jan with over thirty players turning up. Many were admitting to weight gain over the festive period. We dispensed with the faster game and had four teams of eight very slowly walking off the surplus weight. Everyone enjoyed the slow introduction and we had a really good session. We are waiting for the start of the new winter Manchester Football League which starts this month. We are interested in having new members join us for any of our sessions. We have three, plus a Ladies Only session for the Over Thirties on Tuesday evening between 7:00pm - 8:00pm.

We also recognised the work done by members to secure funding for the New Community Hall. We are moving ever closer to building a new facility for the residents of Pilling. Councillor Matthew Salter presented the award for Lancashire Community Project of the Year 2018. This award recognises the hard work and dedication of all the volunteers who give up their time to develop and maintain the facilities.

THE HOUGHTON WEAVERS Ticket are still available for the Houghton Weavers Concert which takes place on Mon 18th Feb 8:00pm at Cockerham Village Hall. This is always a great night of fun and entertainment so why not come along and judge for yourself! Tickets cost ÂŁ10. Katrina Bell (01253) 790649

2019 flies by, January gone and we are into February already, spring around the corner and always a great time for photography as the plants and animals awake from the winter. Our meeting on Wed 6th Feb is a talk from Alan and Julie Walker ‘Costa Rica and Beyond’. Both are well-travelled and excellent photographers with many photographic accreditations to their names. They have visited the club before and are very informative, always willing to share information about where and how photographs have been taken. On this talk, they are pursuing nature images on a journey from Costa Rica, visiting Kenya, looking for bears in a snowy Finland and also visiting the Cairngorms in the snow - along with many other UK adventures on the way. If anyone would like to come along as a visitor they would be most welcome. Visitor’s fee is £4 including light refreshments. Wed 13th Feb is our annual Portrait Competition, Digital images, Mono Prints and Colour Prints. Well known photographic judge Nick Hilton will comment on members’ entries and award places to the winners. Wed 20th Feb will be a Workshop ‘Flowers, Foliage, Trunks, Roots and Branches’ Anything from big trees to tiny flowers. We will also be looking at the images chosen for the ‘Battle with Holme’ which takes place in March. Looking forward to March, the month starts

BEN WALLACE MP Well here we are well and truly forging into 2019. As you will no doubt have seen things are moving quickly in Westminster and it remains an extremely busy period and important time for the country and its future. During this time of national importance it is vital that as your local MP I continue to carry out my duties within the constituency and I have been doing just that. I would like to thank the many residents I have spoken to for sharing their views with me as I travel around. Highway issues are always well represented in my mailbag and I am pleased to see more resurfacing and major patching being carried out in many areas including the A588 from Hambleton to Stalmine. Although

road works can cause inconvenience, the works are necessary as preparation for the significant investment (from the Safer Roads Fund) in the whole length of the road later this year. While on a recent constituency day I visited the Royal Preston Hospital where I was interviewed by the Hospital Radio Station. I also visited Blackpool Victoria Hospital just before Christmas and being in the hospitals during the winter months before and after Christmas reminded me of the outstanding job our doctors, nurses, hospital staff and all emergency services do on our behalf. Across the constituency, and the county, the roll out of superfast broadband stalled for several months last year as Openreach had sought to increase its charges. Lancashire was not the only county affected and as a consequence Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK), part of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, took over the negotiations with Openreach. I am pleased to report that BDUK reached an agreement with Openreach at the end of last year and as a result Lancashire County Council can resume its roll out, although with some delay. You can learn more about the County’s superfast broadband project here: www.lancashire.gov.uk/council/ strategies-policies-plans/corporate/ superfast-broadband/ In last month’s article I mentioned how unpredictable the weather is and how real the risk of flooding is in many areas. With this in mind I am meeting Keith Ashcroft in the next couple of days. Mr Ashcroft is the Environment Agency’s Area Director for Cumbria and Lancashire. It is vital that I keep up to date with what the Agency is doing and that I hammer home to him the

ST AIDAN’S NEWS

views of constituents. I also hope he will set out the Agency’s priorities for our constituency over the next few years, so that I can lobby Ministers for the necessary funding. I have also mentioned before the great work local Flood Action Groups do and the importance of their presence at Wyre’s Flood Forum meetings. The Flood Forums are a great opportunity for the local groups to get answers from all agencies and local elected representatives. For some years now I have facilitated a visit to Parliament by the Principals of Sixth Form Colleges throughout Lancashire. The visit consists of meetings with Ministers and various officials and gives the Principals an opportunity to highlight the challenges they are facing. The visits are always culminated with a dinner. I am very proud of the Sixth Form Colleges which serve the constituency and I believe collectively they offer a wide range of subjects and a high standard of education. I continue to meet residents at my advice surgeries covering a wide range of issues. Please remember if you would like to attend one the most effective way to contact me is by e-mail, with a brief description of the issues you wish to raise and your contact details. It is worth bearing in mind that I can often offer assistance without the need for a meeting. If I can be of any assistance to you please ring my Office at the House of Commons on 0207 219 5804 or my Constituency Office on (01995) 672977, email me at wallaceb@ parliament.uk or write to me at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA. This really does represent the ‘giving is better than receiving’ message so fantastically and we are so proud. Additionally, we had the opportunity to further enhance our ever-growing relationship with the local community in December, with our yearly Senior Citizen’s Christmas Party. This is an event we are proud to host and as many Year 7 pupils assist with this event, it really does allow us to see some of our younger pupils shine and show off some exceptional personal qualities we may not always have the chance to see in the classroom. Our guests were kept well fed and watered by our Year 7 hosts and entertainment was even provided in the form of performances,

Christmas carols and an old classic everyone loves to play...Bingo! Our Year 9 pupils are currently tasked with picking their GCSE Options over the next week or so. They will soon be entering a new chapter of their school life and although this may seem like a daunting decision, our pupils have taken this in their stride. It is hard to believe that at 13 and 14 years old, they can show such maturity! The excitement is brewing for the up-andcoming Paris Trip, where we will take 40 pupils (and a few lucky teachers) from all year groups on the trip of a lifetime to such a beautiful and iconic city. We have lots planned during our four-day trip, including: a visit to Disneyland Paris, a guided visit to Le Musee du Parfum Fragonard, a cruise on the River Seine and of course... a visit to the Eiffel Tower!

Community Meals At Kepplegate, we want to make staying at home easier (and tastier) than ever before! Our meals come HOT so don’t require microwaving, we will even plate them up for you! Our meal service will also act as a reassurance and welfare check for relatives. Although our LOCAL friendly drivers are not carers, they are caring! Always there to help and raise concerns. SOROPTIMISTS Women inspiring action, transforming lives Northwest Soroptimists Week of Action The week commencing Mon 14th Jan saw the first Week of Action by Soroptimists in the North West – a week in which we tried to highlight the work being done throughout the region on a common theme of Mental Health. We’ve started off small this year, but it’s amazing how much happens quietly – and in the case of the Grange-over-Sands and Pendleside clubs who run ‘Singing for Memory’ groups then not so quietly! In Garstang, we had a speaker covering the topic of Mindfulness. We are always keen to help others but what about us? Shouldn’t we

look after our own mental health? How does anyone cope looking after someone else if they are not well themselves? Building on that we will also be tackling our own physical well-being in February with an exercise class. There are many reasons why physical activity is good for your body – having a healthy heart and improving your joints and bones are just two, but did you know that physical activity is also beneficial for your mental health and wellbeing? And in a few months we will also be hearing a speaker from MIND talking about building a Happier Lancashire – more on the topic later. Foodbank Donations At least twice a year, we make a collection of food/cleaning/personal hygiene products to donate to our nearest foodbank. It’s an unfortunate sign of the times we live in that there are families that cannot afford to feed

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE Message from the Practice Manager

to make one house call.

Home Visit Guidance

If you cannot come to the surgery and need the doctor to visit, please telephone (01253) 951165 before 10:30am. Our guidelines are in accordance with the national and local recommendations and are produced below.

Most patients who need to consult a GP will be seen at the surgery but we continue to make a limited number of home visits when this is appropriate. •

You may only request a home visit if you are a truly bed-bound patient or are too ill to visit the practice.

Your GP will only visit you at home if they think that your medical condition requires it and will also decide how urgently a visit is needed.

Please bear this in mind and be prepared to provide suitable details to enable the doctor to schedule house calls.

Please remember! Home visits are very time consuming and the doctor can see at least five patients in the surgery in the time it takes

GP Visit Recommended - GP home visiting can make good sense and is the best way of giving a medical opinion in cases involving the terminally ill or the truly bed-bound patient for whom travel to premises by car would cause a deterioration in their medical condition. GP Visit is Not Usual - In most of the following cases, a visit would not be appropriate: Common symptoms of childhood illnesses: fevers, cold, cough, earache, headache, diarrhoea/vomiting, and most cases of abdominal pain. These patients are usually well enough to travel by car. It is not harmful to take a child with a fever outside. These children may not be fit to travel by bus or to walk; but car transport is available from friends, relatives or taxi firms. It is not a doctor’s responsibility to arrange such transport. Adults with common problems: such as cough, sore throat, influenza, back pain and abdominal pain, are also readily transportable by car to a doctor’s premises. Common problems in the elderly: such as poor mobility, joint pain and general malaise, would also be treated by consultation at the doctor’s premises. The exception to this would be the truly bed-bound patient. Community Transport Options Wyre Community Transport is a door to door transport service available to Lancashire residents who find it difficult to use public transport normally because of restricted mobility. Fares are payable to the driver and are kept as low as possible.

STALMINE PARISH NEWS Handrail off Smithy Lane Councillors would like to assure residents that the work to install the handrail will be done. Quotations have been received, some of which are prohibitively expensive, so the Council is liaising with other suppliers to ensure that a quality rail at a sensible price is sourced. Village Footpaths As part of the ongoing work to improve the woodland and ensure access for all, the Parish Council is looking to work more closely with Lancashire County Council and Wyre Council as part of the initiative to improve walking facilities in the area. These Councils are already approaching landowners regarding the upgrade of stiles to gates and are promoting health walks. Stalmine Council’s planned woodland signage will contribute to this. Tree Charter At the January meeting the Council resolved to become a charter branch and sign the tree charter. In doing this it is joining over 240 Councils to promote the ten principles to life (details are available on the Council’s website) and is looking to protect trees and woodland within the neighbourhood for future generations. Date and Time of Next Meeting Tues 12th Feb 7:00pm in the Village Hall. Members of the public are welcome to attend. Your Parish Councillors The Councillors for Stalmine-with-Staynall are: Cllr D Forshaw (Chairman), Woodland Cottage, Brickhouse Lane, 07585 335 201; Cllr Terry Williams (Vice-Chairman), By The Way, Brickhouse Lane, (01253) 702734; Cllr D Booth, Wardleys Cottage, Wardleys Lane, (01253) 701711; Cllr A Haydock, Atlantis, Stricklands Lane, 07879 477 779;

WHY WE SHOULD LOVE BATS Wed 6th March 7:30pm URC Hall, Croston Rd, Garstang Garstang Millennium Green Trust is pleased to present a talk by Gail Armstrong from the North Lancashire Bat Group on the subject of ‘Why We Should All Love Bats’. Bats often get a bad press. From phrases such as ‘Blind as a bat’ and ‘like a bat out of hell’, to people being described as ‘batty’ - Why do bats attract so many negative associations? According to Gail we should be thinking of them in a more positive light. Have you ever seen a bat? Or wondered where and how they live? What difference do they make to our lives? Perhaps you should come along and see if we can persuade you to love them. Admission is £3 payable on entry and includes tea/coffee and biscuits. A raffle will also be held. All proceeds will go towards the upkeep of Garstang Millennium Green (Registered Charity No. 1079032). We are a small charity that owns and runs the 3.5ha of public open space alongside the River Wyre that comprises Garstang Millennium Green. We are run and managed entirely by volunteers and receive no financial assistance from the Local Authority. All the work on the Green is carried out by dedicated volunteers, who give up a lot of their free time to maintain this area for you to enjoy. Please support us and come and enjoy an informative evening. Garstang Millennium Green Trust
