LANCASTER SINGERS Bach’s St. John Passion Sat 16th March 8:00pm St. Peter’s Cathedral, Lancaster Lancaster Singers are privileged to perform the UK premier of an exciting new English edition of the St. John Passion by JS Bach. Professional Australian tenor Christopher Steele, based in Lancashire, has a wealth of performance experience including work with The Royal Opera House and English National Opera. He has been perfecting this English adaptation of the St. John Passion over many years. Responding to a need for an improved English translation, Chris has maintained the original musicality of Bach’s work whilst enhancing the libretto to bring accurate and meaningful appreciation to an English audience. The Lancaster Singers, having recently given a powerful performance of Karl Jenkins’ ‘The Armed Man’ to a sellout audience as part of Lancaster City Council’s official Remembrance Day events for 2018, are more than ready to take on this exciting new task. As a well-established choir who are going from strength to strength under the experienced direction of Duncan Lloyd, they are thrilled to be involved in the making of musical history in this way. Tickets are available from the Lancaster Tourist Information Office and the Lancaster Singers’ website: www.lancastersingers. org

PILLING LANE WI February’s talk was given by Brian Berry who stepped in at the very last minute when our booked speaker was down with the flu. He gave us a talk and demonstration of ‘Magic with a Smile’ and he certainly left us with smiles on our faces as he did tricks and talked of some of the history and his life in magic. The March meeting is on Wed 6th March 7:30pm at St Oswald’s Parish Hall. Our speaker will be Tony Boyd on ‘Music and Instruments’. Come along and see what we are about. All welcome. GARSTANG HISTORICAL SOCIETY Wed 13th March 7:30pm Garstang United Reformed Church A talk and presentation on the history of poultry farming in Lancashire, and particularly
in the Fylde area, is to be given by Mr John Grimbaldeston of Woodplumpton, who has titled his lecture ‘The farmer and the Hen, A Lancashire Love Story’, (which is also the title of his recent book on the topic). Following the meeting there will be an opportunity to book for the annual hot pot supper which will be held at 6:00pm in the church hall on Wed 10th April (note the meal date has been put back a month - from the March to the April meeting). Details will also be available at the March meeting of the intended visits this spring / summer to places of historic interest. The Society’s monthly lectures are free for members, £3 for visitors. Any queries about the Historical Society, please contact chairman Peter Burrell (01995) 601054. Anthony Coppin
A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT I thought I would step back from our bodily health this month to touch upon our environment which in it’s own right is linked into our physical and mental wellbeing. I felt compelled to write about this having seen the report about a decline of 77% in flying insects in Germany between 1989 and 2016. Even our abundant rabbit population has declined by 60% in the UK and our hedgehogs have declined by half since 2000. To me this is a frightening sign that there appears to be a collapse in the very foundations of our delicate ecosystem – of which we are an inescapable part. What amazed me is that this news appears to have gone largely unreported whilst we sit watching news reports about Brexit and the political tug of war going on. It made me

A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT (cont) wonder what is really important here – our politics or our world? Surely such reports of this kind of extinction should be headline news and a call to action everywhere? Not so apparently. I am sure there are many and varied reasons for insect decline and I’m pretty sure widespread use of pesticides and monoculture farming where there are vast tracts of land with no biodiversity are important factors. Most of this comes from the drive for cheap food and lots of this food is simply used to feed animals to give us in the West cheap meat. I still find it difficult to believe that our mainstream farming system believes putting poisons on food as they are growing is considered the norm and that washing it before serving it to us in plastic containers is acceptable. We have become used to this for our own convenience without a single

thought for the real cost that we do not see. My advice to everyone is that we need to put more thought into where our food comes from. Hold our supermarkets to book to show what they are doing to encourage good management of our land (rather than driving farms and rural communities into the ground to get things as cheap as they can). I would also say we ALL need to eat more vegetarian meals. Of course some of us need occasional meat but to demand it at every meal is leading to us to quite simply destroying ourselves without even realising it. Eighteen months ago I went to Thailand and did an eco friendly trip to the Hongs. These are distinctive outcrops of rocks sticking out of the sea (you will have seen them in a James Bond film), many of which have lagoons inside them. My wife and I had done the same trip ten

A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT (cont) years before. That time around our boat was followed out to sea by birds waiting for fish to be thrown for them. At dusk we watched thousands of huge fruit bats fly like fleet of aircraft from the cliffs to go feeding and had hundreds of fish hurl themselves into our canoes when we had a light shine in the darkness. Ten years on, no birds, no bats and no fish, just loads of plastic littering the beaches of the Hongs. Truly what are we doing? Nick Tofalos
OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE Chronic Disease Management Recall We have over 4000 patients with a long term condition, some examples of these are Diabetes, Coronary Heart Disease, COPD,
Asthma, Hypertension, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Dementia. All of these patients need an annual review, either by a GP or a Practice Nurse, to ensure their long term condition is well managed and are on the correct medication. We are looking at changing to a new recall system where patients will be invited for their review in their birth month. As we have such a high number of patients to be recalled, we need to start small and test the new system to make sure it works. From April, we are starting the new recall for patients with Asthma so if your birthday is in April, you will be invited to make an appointment with the Respiratory Nurse for your annual asthma review, or instead of waiting for your invite, if it is your birth month, then please feel free to book your appointment. This can be done in several ways: call the Practice after 11:00am, book

OVER WYRE MEDICAL (cont) on-line or book using the ‘myGP’ app. If you have recently had an asthma review, we ask that you still book in for your birth month review as this will then keep your reviews synchronised. We will trial this for a minimum of 3 months to make sure it works before adding any other long term conditions. Practice Statement The partners and practice management at Over Wyre Medical Centre would like to reassure our patient population in response to the investigation and recent subsequent disqualification from practising of Dr Jerome Kerrane. Dr Kerrane has been removed from the medical register following an investigation into his administrative conduct while leading research work some years ago at a GP practice in Blackpool.
We are keen to reassure our patients that this investigation bore absolutely no connection to Dr Kerrane’s time here as a doctor and that after joining Over Wyre Medical Centre, he was no longer undertaking any research work. Dr Kerrane was a very popular GP with patients and we were very pleased with his clinical care whilst a member of our team. We are confident there was no compromise in his patient care during his time at Over Wyre. He has now ceased working as a GP at Over Wyre Medical Centre. We thank our patients in advance for your support, understanding and patience in this matter. Thank you for your continued support. John MacPhee - Practice Manager (01253) 951165

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Over Wyre Branch The Branch meeting this time was quite lively with lots of discussions regarding the future of the Branch and events. It now has its own website www.overwyerbl. com that has been set-up by one of our members. Whilst it is still in its infancy it is hoped that we should be able – in the near future – to input Royal British Legion National, Lancashire County and local Branch information on events etc. We might be small in number but we are progressive and that bodes well for the future. We also had a new member turn up which is an event in itself but as he stated – he may also have a neighbour who may be interested in joining.
The members discussed the possibility of holding Branch social events – a get together with a meal at the Black Bull possibly this month and a Summer event at Ryecroft Hall, all dependent upon cost etc. It is hoped to organise a coach outing to the National Memorial Arboretum but, again, that will depend upon the numbers wanting to go which will dictate the size of the coach and the cost. If we get sufficient numbers wanting to attend – and it will be open to all, not just Legion members or ex-Servicemen and women – the cost would include the hire of the small train to go round the site and a refreshments whilst we are there or on the return journey. These events will be advertised in the local community as well as on the web-site and, hopefully, on the Preesall and Knott End Community Face-book page.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION (cont) Wyre Armed Forces and Veterans Meet and Greet Discussion Group The Branch will be represented at the forthcoming Wyre Borough Council discussions in Garstang about starting a Wyre Armed Forces and Veterans Meet and Greet Group. Meetings of the Group will be held in various places throughout Wyre area. The first meeting will be at Garstang St. Thomas’s Church on Fri 8th March and the second one at Preesall Youth & Community Centre on Mon 18th March both from 10:00am - 1:00pm. Free Tea/Coffee and biscuits will be provided. There isn’t anything formal about this new group, just a place where those who have served or are still serving in the Armed Forces can come together and discuss anything from their experiences in the Armed
Forces, such as health problems, housing or employment issues, to War Disability and Service Pensions or the problems that they might be experiencing in these areas. The topics for discussion depend upon each individual but sometimes it is good to talk and air your grievances or get much needed information with and from like minded people. Come along and help make this new venture in Wyre - Meet and Greet Discussion Group - work. Who knows it could be you who benefits. The next meeting of the Over Wyre Royal British Legion Branch will be on Thurs 14th March at 2:30pm in the Preesall Youth & Community Centre. Thank You for your support both in the past – today and, hopefully, in the future. Bill Burn 07715 784 128

HAMBLETON WI ‘Thrifty Design/When Art is Really Rubbish’ was Lucy Wray, B.A. Hons, title for her talk, displaying incredible art works of three dimensional life size hares, a Jack Russell dog and various birds and flowers, made into cards and brooches. Lucy vivaciously explained how, after her degree course from Manchester Art college, she tried working in commerce and felt she needed to listen to her inner artist’s voice and branch out.

Being very concerned about the environment she experimented with various mediums. She found, through contacts, factories that were willing to let her have ends of rolls of cloth material, paper and cardboard off cuts. She was well away designing, mainly from the countryside around her, and making articles for sale and taking commissions from the general public. Lucy noticed how brightly coloured bread wrappers and other single use plastic wrappings can be. She demonstrated to us using an iron, scissors and baking paper how to meld plastics together with heat and produce different coloured patterns to make book covers and brooches etc. She then took some used silver foil trays, like you would use at a buffet, and cut out the shape of a dove. She marked this with a disused empty bic pen to show its eye, feathers and tummy - so simple anyone can do it. With leaves in copper, from empty tomato sauce tubes, Lucy mounts these items on reclaimed copper wire in a circle to make an everlasting wreath. Brilliant. The vote of thanks was given by Jeannie Nuttall. Diary Dates Fri 8th & Sat 9th March: Needle Felting Workshop at LFWI Offices, Leyland. Mon 11th March: Monthly meeting 7:30pm URC Church Hall, Sandy Lane. Speaker

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES
Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?
Dr Finlay Sutton
If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.
Brenda’s Testimonial
Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

PILLING BAND This month I am pleased to be able share some good news with you all. On Sun 27th Jan the band entered a contest in Preston where we played ‘First Suite in Eb’ by Holst.
as we have some planned over the next few months. An advance date for your diary is Sat 8th June when we will be putting on a joint concert with Over Wyre Community Choir.
We began rehearsing after Christmas at the start of January and have had extra rehearsals at weekends to prepare us and I am so pleased to be able to say the hard work paid off as we won our section.
The band are always pleased to welcome new members to the band so if you are new to the area and play a brass instrument or used to play and fancy starting again please get in touch and check out our new website www. pilling-band.com or find us on Facebook by searching Pilling Jubilee Silver Band.
We also won two soloist prizes – Andy Hall won the best cornet player and Kate Marney, who is our new solo horn player, proved what a fantastic addition she is to the horn section as she won best horn player. By the time you are reading this we will have played the piece again at the North West area contest at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool so you never know, I may have more good news to share. OVER WYRE ART SOCIETY
Ray Swift helped us all with our soft pastel beach scenes. He demonstrated each stage and took the time to give individual guidance although there were many present.
demonstrated this by setting up pottery items in black and white and asked us to observe the shades of grey with natural light coming from only one direction. Everyone had a go at painting a still life using only black and white acrylics. We thanked Susan for such a useful lesson since tone is relevant to all paintings.
When Bob Goldsborough visited to give an oil demonstration of a landscape with trees and water, several members booked on his day workshop which followed. He works ‘alla prima’ meaning all the paint was applied whilst still wet. There was much to learn but then we never cease to learn and the follow on workshop certainly helped.
Our next exhibition is from Sat 9th March until Fri 22nd March at Garstang Library. Please come and have a look if you are in the area.
The club is flourishing at present. We are still welcoming new members who have been keen to get painting each week.
We do also have free painting weeks which give time to chat and look at each other’s work. Susan Pugh is a Blackpool artist. Her lesson focused on tone rather than colour. She

LEGEND FIRES NW STAGES RALLY Sat 23rd March 8:30am Myerscough College Motorsport history is to be made locally this March when the Legend Fires North West Stages Rally, in partnership with Simpson’s Skoda, www.pro-rally.co.uk becomes the first closed road motorsport event to be held in the North West of England. The North West Stages Rally first ran in 1997. Since then it has raised in excess of £100,000 for various charities, and those nominated for 2019 are the North West Air Ambulance and Derian House Children’s Hospice. The rally has attracted entrants from throughout the UK who will compete in a
variety of cars including a number of ‘World Rally Cars’ that cost hundreds of thousands of pounds. Always a popular event with competitors and spectators alike, the switch from private roads, such as Blackpool’s Lower Promenade and Fleetwood’s Waterfront, takes the event to a new level. The rally is limited to 120 entrants but such has been the demand for places there’s little doubt it will run with a full entry. It was a change to the Road Traffic Act in April last year that allowed motorsport events to proceed on the public highway without the requirement of an Act of Parliament. Having obtained a permit from Motorsport UK, the governing body of four-wheel motorsport, and a ‘Motor Race Order’ from Lancashire County Council, the event is set to proceed on Sat 23rd March. The roles played by both Wyre Borough and Lancaster City Council can’t be underestimated either. Without their full support and co-operation the rally wouldn’t be going ahead. Based at and supported by Myerscough College, the event features a ‘ceremonial start’ to be held in Garstang on the evening of Fri 22nd March 6:30pm when the High Street will be closed. Spectators will be able to get up close to cars and drivers as they’re interviewed prior to being flagged away by Garstang’s Mayor. On Sat 23rd March the first car will leave Myerscough College at 8:30am and the first car to finish is expected back at approximately 5:40pm. Spectators are welcome at Myerscough College to watch both the start and the finish fo the rally. Details in respect of the locations and times of the special stages, spectator viewing areas and car parking arrangements will be published on the website at www.

Spectator information will be released nearer the event on the rally’s website www.northweststages.co.uk Amongst those taking part is former World Rally contestant Neil Wearden from Preesall. Since retiring from the World Rally Championship scene at the end of 2001 Wearden has made less than a handful of appearances in a Ford Escort Mk2. COMPUTER ADVICE I’d like to talk about a familiar subject this month – scam emails. I’ve seen quite a lot of these recently, some regulars and one or two new ones. Here are a few examples of emails which are always dodgy: •
TV Licensing – ‘Your Direct Debit Payment was refused’. There have been lots of these, slightly different wording every time but quite professional looking. However, in all cases the email was actually coming from an address in Japan eg. tentiroiro.jp, it didn’t address me by my proper name and I know that my licence isn’t due for renewal or had problems with payments.
•
DHL Express – ‘Delivery details attached’. This was not a sophisticated attempt, the email was badly written and delivery companies do not send you information in Word documents attached to an email.
36
•
PayPal Services PayPal Electronic Invoice Notification - ‘The following Invoice Notification is being sent to you by PayPal Inc, click here to download your personal PayPal Standard Invoice.’ PayPal do not send invoices.
•
HM GOV.UK TAX – CONFIRMATION OF TAX RETURN. ‘HMRC owes you £382.84 GBP. Click here to get started. The link expires (date given was same date as email)’. This is not an HMRC email address, and this is not how HMRC would tell you about a refund. They had also included a bit at the bottom of the email which is copied from a genuine one – ‘do not reply or click on any links’!
•
Some very nasty ones – ‘I am a spyware software developer. Your account has been hacked by me.’ This one goes on to describe at length how your webcam has allegedly been used to record what

COMPUTER ADVICE (cont) you’ve been up to and if you don’t pay a very large fee in Bitcoins quickly then your computer will be wiped and all your contacts will get a copy of the videos etc. Needless to say that none of it is true and it’s just another attempt to scare people into giving money to the fraudsters. So how can you tell if it’s a fake message? Firstly, any from a person or organisation you don’t have a connection to (eg. iTunes or eBay when you don’t have an account) is most likely a scam. Fake emails often (but not always) have a different email address from the trusted organisation’s normal website address.

TV LICENCE SCAM (cont) The scam involves fraudsters sending people fake TV Licensing emails to steal their personal information. Victims who click on the link in the email risk having their money stolen. Action Fraud has warned of TV Licensing phishing emails after a large number of reports were received by the phishing reporting tool. A new wave of TV Licensing phishing emails are part of larger fraud, in which criminals are calling victims and claiming to be bank employees and convincing them to part with their money. Fraudsters are sending out fake TV Licence emails regarding refunds and payment issues to people across the UK. They will use headlines such as ‘correct your licensing information’, ‘billing information updates’ and ‘renew now’ to trick people into clicking on the link within the email. Within a week or two, the victim will receive
a phone call from the fraudster claiming to be from the fraud department of the victim’s bank. Fraudsters are convincing victims they are genuine banking staff by using the personal details that the victim provided through the fake website. The fraudsters are then claiming that the victim’s account has been compromised, possibly by a phishing scam they may have fallen victim to recently, and that they need to transfer their money to a new ‘safe account’. Director of Action Fraud, Pauline Smith, said: ‘Bank staff and police officers will never ask you to move money to a safe account. It is also important that you never click on links in emails you were not expecting. ‘If you believe you have been a victim of fraud, please report it to us.’ A TV Licensing spokesperson said: ‘We’re continuing to work closely with Action

RSPCA Long stay Cat Appeal We currently have three long stay cats who have been looking for new homes for over six months. We are desperate to find them new homes as cattery life is now starting to take its toll. If you could offer one of them a home or know someone that may, please put them in contact with us on (01253) 703000. Freddie Freddie has been looking for a new home since July 2018. He was brought into the Centre after spending some time as a stray. He was thin and suffering from fur loss. His fur is growing back slowly so he just needs to be monitored in his new home. On arrival he was quite timid but he soon settled down and started to relax and socialise more with the staff. He is now super friendly and always eager to say hi as he will come running over to you as soon as you approach his pen. Freddie isn’t impressed with being held or restrained when he sees the vet but still loves nothing more than fuss, food and tasty treats. However it does have to be on his terms! Although he enjoys being stroked, he is a typical cat who sometimes, if a bit grumpy, will let you know he has had enough. He would prefer to be the only pet in the household so he can have all the fuss and attention he wants. Freddie is looking for a home without children and an owner who is patient and confident with cats .

RSPCA We have very little information on this chap except he was found with a nasty wound in his mouth which has now been treated and he only had half a tail. When he arrived Brodie was quite nervous but has since settled in and is now much happier and comfortable in his surroundings. We are seeing his friendly side but he can be temperamental so will need an experienced, confident and understanding cat owner who doesn’t mind being told off now and again and who is willing to give him his ‘me’ time and plenty of space to come around. Due to his bold nature we feel Brody would suit a quieter home where he can have safe outdoor access and be the only pet.
Shadow Shadow has been looking for a new home since September 2018. We are looking for a special home with experienced and confident owners for this lady after she was picked up as a heavily pregnant stray, giving birth to three kittens shortly after arriving. She was initially very fearful and wary of us but overtime her confidence around people has grown although she can still get quite worried at times and really doesn’t want to be held. Shadow is happy to be left to do her own thing so needs a home where owners will be hands off and let her have all the time and space that she requires as it will take time for

CANINE HYDROTHERAPY Canine hydrotherapy is an effective way to treat and improve a dog’s quality of life. It builds up and tones muscle which then increases the range of joint movement, aids circulation, decreases pain and inflammation, improves fitness and stamina, aids recovery from surgery and can slow down the progression of degenerative conditions. It gives the dog a feeling of wellbeing. Using an underwater treadmill, hydrotherapy works by combining warm water (30˚c) hydrostatic pressure, buoyancy and gentle resistance.

Water Walker Hydrotherapy
The Water Walker is a revolutionary concept in canine rehabilitation & fitness. Using a computerised treadmill in warm water, it can be used in the treatment of:
The treadmill speed can be adjusted to formulate an individual plan of treatment, ensuring the dog walks at the correct speed to maximise efficient muscle and joint use and to maintain a straight central line in the tank, which will then improve the gait and improve the muscle mass. This can be particularly beneficial for young dogs diagnosed with hip dysplasia. The forward, straight movement helps build up the muscles around the hip joint. The younger they start treatment the better the outcome. Winter and cold weather can exacerbate health conditions and joint problems, especially arthritis in dogs (and humans). Hydrotherapy is an excellent treatment for pain relief and assisting mobility using the buoyancy and warm water. Also, during the winter months, dogs can be reluctant to go out for walks when it’s cold and damp, so stiffness becomes worse and

FROM HERE TO ABSURDITY A Satirical Sketch Show Sun 31st March 7:00pm Scorton Village Hall As part of its current UK tour, the quick-fire satirical sketch show ‘From Here to Absurdity’ is coming to Scorton. If you fancy live comedy that’s a bit different to regular stand-up and enjoy a show that recalls the spirit of Peter Cook and ‘Beyond the Fringe’, then ‘From Here to Absurdity’ could well be to your taste. The show lasts for about 90 minutes and
comprises about 30 sketches and songs. The material focuses on the assorted idiocies of modern life, targeting (for example) political correctness, prattish ramblers, rapacious estate agents, irritating telephone salesmen, sad round-robin writers, birth, marriage, divorce and death. BEN WALLACE MP I am receiving a great deal of letters and emails at the moment about national issues and these help me to represent you effectively in Parliament. Westminster is an extremely busy place at the moment as you can imagine, but a Member of Parliament must always remember their constituency and living here in Lancashire with my family helps me stay focused on what is important to my constituents. I believe it is important to escape the bubble of Westminster and speak to the people I represent as often as possible. Recently I took part in the ‘Give a Day to Policing’ initiative run by Lancashire Constabulary. My day with the local Police began with a

full brief from Officers at Fleetwood Police Station. This was a great opportunity to speak to local Officers about local issues and the pressures they are under day to day. We discussed everything from local Officers working from the Civic Centre in Poulton to cyber-crime. Then in the afternoon I went on patrol with a local Officer. First we went to Poulton where we took the opportunity to chat with people before the officer had to visit a few locations to carry out daily tasks. We then continued the day by going on a vehicle patrol in Over Wyre. It was very interesting to hear the views of a local Officer on a host of different issues. The Police here in Lancashire do an outstanding job in an ever changing environment. The Officers were keen to highlight how their work has changed over the past decade with new challenges from

They also talked about the growing amount of Officer time which is spent helping to safeguard vulnerable people, such as missing children and people suffering from mental ill health. I know from my own involvement in the individual cases of constituents just how valuable this work is. I found the day fascinating and I would like to thank all who were involved for giving up their time. I am delighted that after strong representations by the local community and me, the Secretary of State has blocked the new fracking site at Roseacre. It was always in the wrong location due to the impact of the HGV traffic on the narrow local roads and I hope now my constituents can rest at ease.
I continue to meet residents at my advice surgeries to discuss a wide range of issues. Please remember if you would like to attend one of my surgeries, the most effective way to contact me is by email, with a brief description of the issues you wish to raise and your contact details. It is worth bearing in mind that I can often offer assistance without the need for a meeting. National issues are filling my mailbag at the moment. Please remember I am here to represent you and your views are important to me so please keep them coming. If I can be of any assistance to you please ring my Office at the House of Commons on 0207 219 5804 or my Constituency Office on (01995) 672977, email me at wallaceb@ parliament.uk or write to me at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA. Ben Wallace MP
I agree 100% with the opinion of the Secretary of State when he stated in his report that the proposed development would have a serious and very significant adverse impact on the safety of people using the public highway. This has been hanging over the local community and I am extremely pleased that common-sense has prevailed. I am also pleased that earlier this month my efforts on behalf of Lancashire Police has meant they have got extra funding to police the more advanced fracking site at Preston New Road. I have mentioned a few times in this monthly article about how I am seeing an improvement in the state of the highways locally. My Office receives notice of works and I have been pleasantly surprised with the number of planned improvements in the area. I do know how bad the roads were and in some areas still are but I am convinced we are moving in the right direction. As always, I welcome your views on this issue.

Our new family groups are growing and bonding. We have split our pupils into eight mixed-age family groups, each named after a forest animal. Each week our groups get together to read stories, play games, do crafts and get to know each other.
Pre-school have had great fun outdoors in the forest making bird hides and using binoculars to spot birds. We celebrated the Chinese New Year by tasting different food for snack time, making a huge dragon and performing a dance for the big children in school.
We are holding an Easter Egg colouring competition for all children in the community up to the age of five. Entry forms will be available from Knott End Library, Over Wyre Medical Centre and Huckleberry’s.
Ash Class’s topic this half term is ‘Superheroes’. The children are loving the story ‘Supertato’ and have taken their learning home by making their own Supertatoes.
We are also holding Forest Stay and Play sessions for parents and toddlers each Thursday morning in May. Each session will be from 9:30am to 11:30am.
Oak Class have had a great time looking at the story of Rapunzel. They have innovated their own ideas for the witch, the tower and the prince and used these to write a range of fantastic stories.

CAT SMITH MP After persistent lobbying, I’m delighted that the Government agreed to cover much of the costs incurred by Lancashire Constabulary in policing the fracking site at Preston New Road. Last year, the government handed back £1.4 million to the force, although the operation cost in excess of £7 million. Whilst the grant doesn’t cover the full costs of the operation, it’s a significant contribution and will make a big difference. I often get told by constituents that ‘writing letters is a waste of time’. This result goes to prove that repeatedly arguing your case can eventually bring about change. Having said this, since 2010, nationally we’ve lost 21,000 police officers. The new head of the Police Federation, John Apter, has
warned that forces across the country are in crisis and the public are suffering as a result of falling headcounts and increasing crime. MPs recently voted on the Police Funding Settlement. Lancashire Police were offered a grant of £193.745m - £48.9m less than the grant received by Lancashire in 2010/11 and a reduction of 21.29% in grant funding. This has required total cuts of £86m to be delivered since 2010/11 once cost pressures have also been taken into account. I voted against this funding proposal. In 2019/20 Police and Crime Commissioners are also being permitted to increase Council Tax by £24 for a Band D property. However this system is unfair and means police forces in the south can raise a great deal more money than those of us in the north. Council tax is levied on properties based on their value. Properties with lower values fall under lower bands (ABC), and properties

CAT SMITH MP (cont) with higher values fall under higher bands (D to I). An area’s Council Tax Base reflects the numbers of properties in each council tax band. Lancashire has a population of almost 1.5m, and almost 60 per cent of properties are classed as either in Band A or Band B, the lowest two bands. Kent in comparison has the same population and fewer dwellings but is able to raise almost £5 million pounds more in funding for the police than Lancashire can. What this means in practice is that any funding settlement placing greater emphasis on council tax precepts will leave Lancashire receiving less and less funding compared to these forces. Furthermore, areas with higher numbers of lower-band properties often have higher levels of crime. A settlement placing greater emphasis on council tax would leave these areas with lower levels of funding to tackle crime. There should be no winners and losers when it comes to public safety. It’s been revealed that next month water bills are to rise by 2% for millions of UK households. Investment in water supply infrastructure was lower in 2018 than in 1990. This is despite more than 20 per cent of all water currently being lost through leakages from water pipes. On average, over the past ten years, water and sewerage companies have paid over £1.8bn per year in dividends to shareholders, which equates to about £75 per household per year. This is an expensive way to finance infrastructure. Customers cannot afford yet another price hike on their water bills. Instead of paying out £1.8bn each year to shareholders, water companies should be remedying our Victorian water infrastructure. Children, to campaign for the improvement of children and young people’s mental health – an issue that I’m very concerned about. A third of 15 to 18-year-olds assessed by Action for Children were found to be suffering from mental health issues. One in nine children aged 5 to 15 experience a mental health disorder. Action for Children helps disadvantaged children across the UK through intervening early to stop neglect and abuse, fostering and adoption, supporting disabled children, and by campaigning to make life better for children and families. If you or someone you know is struggling then please visit www.buildsoundminds.org.uk for more information. CABUS PLAYERS Cabus Players are now in rehearsal for their next production, ‘A Bunch of Amateurs’, written by Nick Newman and Ian Hislop. Trying to boost his flagging career, fading Hollywood action hero Jefferson Steel arrives in England to play King Lear In Stratford – only to find this is not the birthplace of the Bard, but a sleepy village in Suffolk. And instead of Kenneth Branagh and Dame Judi Dench, the cast are just a bunch of amateurs trying to save their theatre from developers. Jefferson’s massive and demanding ego are tested to the limit by the enthusiastic am-dram thespians. This is an extremely funny play with many laugh out moments – a fantastic night out for everyone! The play is on from Thurs 11th April to Sat 13th April 7:30pm at the Cabus Village Hall. Tickets available at £6 from Mace, Croston Road and Garstang News. ST AIDAN’S NEWS Another half term gone already! We have had a very busy half term this time and have two trips coming up in the next week. There is so much to discuss! It may seem a while until May, but we now only have 10 more weeks of teaching with the Year 11 pupils before they sit down to do their GCSEs. In light of this, we have had a lot of visitors in to keep them motivated and mentally prepared for this very important time in their lives. Only last week we had both Peter Wright from Blackpool Sixth in, and a Speed Networking Day. Peter Wright joined us to discuss the opportunity of joining the Excellence Programme at Blackpool Sixth and then went on to further discuss Russell Group Universities, with tips and tricks on how to succeed at college and aiming high for university. Of course, not everybody has university in mind when thinking about their future. Our Year 11 Speed Networking Day showed pupils other routes, including apprenticeships and the army.
as Jordan Kehoe from Blackpool and Fylde College led an assembly on the Reg Johnson Young Chef Schools Competition. We have had lots of entries already and it seems like there is a real buzz on the topic. We are very lucky to have such talented pupils, especially in the Technology Department! Over in the Art Department, Pottery Club have spent the last few weeks making ceramic hearts for Valentine’s Day. I bought one myself! They range from 50p to £2 and each heart has been hand-crafted by the members of the club. The money will be collected and donated to one of our house charities. I can’t wait to get back to you next month with details on our two trips and any other exciting tales! Until then, keep an eye on our twitter page @SaintAidansCEHS for any updates. Chloe Butler - Media Co-ordinator
Year 10 and 11 Drama pupils also had the fortuity to go on a trip to London last weekend. There they saw ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’ at Piccadilly Theatre and even stayed the night in London! A few lucky members of staff got to join them and the overall feedback from the trip, from both pupils and teachers, was amazing! On the topic of trips, we have not just one, but two trips next week during February Half Term. As I mentioned in the last report, there is an incredible Paris trip on the Wednesday but there is also a Ski Trip to Austria. Whether you’re skiing in Austria or practising your French in Paris, we at Saint Aidan’s hope you have a well-deserved break as we wait for the dark mornings to slowly become brighter! SOROPTIMISTS Women Inspiring Action, Transforming Lives International Women’s Day (IWD) – Fri 8th March This is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. IWD is all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action. Internationally, purple is a colour for symbolising women - signifies justice and dignity. The world has seen a significant shift in attitude about women’s equality and emancipation, but many of the younger generation may feel that ‘all the battles have been won for women’ while many feminists
from the 1970’s know only too well the ingrained attitudes against them. Although great steps have been taken by women, the unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women’s education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men. So each year the world inspires women and celebrates their achievements through IWD. The tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc with flowers and small gifts. In some countries IWD has the equivalent status of Mother’s Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers. We usually travel and so far this year we have been up Clougha (the weather was foul!), Rivington, Arnside, Scorton, Barton and Nateby. The run is always followed by a good breakfast!

BECOME A LOCAL COUNCILLOR Make a Change - Become a Councillor Preesall and Stalmine-with-Staynall Parish Councils are calling on residents, passionate about their community, to stand in the local elections in 2019. What Do Councillors Do? Councillors are the champions of their community and give residents a voice on the decisions the Council makes. Becoming a Councillor will allow you to make a real difference in your community by engaging with residents, local groups and businesses to find out their needs; making decisions on which services and projects the Council should take forward; and getting involved locally to ensure the services are meeting your community’s needs. How Long Does it Take? The National Association of Local Councils
(NALC) Local Councillor Census Survey found that Councillors put aside, on average, three hours a week for council work. This often includes attending meetings, engaging with residents and speaking on behalf of the Council to other bodies. Can I stand? There are only a few rules to stand for election. You must be: •
A British citizen, or a citizen of the Commonwealth, or the European Union
•
18 years of age or older
•
Live in an area that is served by the Local Council
How can I get involved? Contact Preesall Town Council at clerk@ preesalltowncouncil.org or Stalminewith-Staynall Parish Council at clerk@ preesalltowncouncil.org to find out more or visit www.nalc.gov.uk/elections

FLEETWOOD FLYERS Another month goes by. There is only one competition to report on, a mini competition between all our members. It should have been a mixed competition with the girls but they had to pull out due to a match against Preston. Thirty men battled the very trying conditions to see Team A win the coveted trophy. We are now looking forward to the summer series which starts in Heywood in March. This is for our Over Sixties members who are chomping at the bit to get started . Our sessions are still going on in all sorts of weather even with snow on the pitches, although I must admit we do seem to get the best of the weather on our Wednesday session. Our sessions remain the same - Monday 7:00pm - 8:00pm in the cages, which is a bookable session, Wednesday is an open
session on the open pitches 12:30pm 2:00pm where it is open to all comers of all abilities. We also cater for a faster than normal walking for the more active. Our Friday session is on a first come basis as we can only cater for fourteen players . Our Ladies Only session is Tuesday 7:00 8:00pm and is for the Over Thirties. There is also a session on Thursday afternoon 3:00pm - 4:30pm at Preesall Sports Centre where we are looking for new members. This is a very relaxed session suitable for first time players www.fleetwoodwalkingfooty.co.uk www.@fleetwoodwalkingfooty.co.uk George Greenall (01253) 825206

Foster with Lancashire County Council and Create Memories Over 2,000 children and young people are currently being looked after here in Lancashire Council care, including older children and sibling groups, so there is always a need a recruit more foster carers. To start the year Lancashire County Council is running a campaign to encourage more people to come forward to become foster carers. The campaign is called ‘Foster With Us and Create Memories’, and features a range of youngsters carrying out activities which fostered children often don’t get a chance to experience – such as learning to bake a cake, play football or appear in a play. The purpose of the create memories theme is to show potential foster carers the difference they can make to a young person’s life in quite small ways. Fostering is a great way to help children and young people enjoy a normal life and flourish
