CATTERALL IN BLOOM Meet The Team Fri 17th May 7:00pm Catterall Village Hall Catterall is really blooming. Last summer we were awarded Gold, won in the Best Large Village category and have been nominated for the Best of Britain in Bloom by the RHS 2019. So you are invited to meet the Bloom team, have a chat, find out more about what’s going on and have some home made cake, tea or coffee. We’d like to meet you too so you can share your ideas with us. The Bloom volunteers usually meet on Tuesdays 10:30am at Catterall Village Hall car park and also on Wednesdays 7:00pm at Stone Cross Community Garden off Cock Robin Lane. If you would like to help and can spare some time, then come along and join us, so we can show everyone what a brilliant and colourful place this is and what a great community we have in Catterall. GARSTANG TENNIS CLUB Open Afternoon Sun 19th May 2:00pm - 5:00pm. As has been the case for the past several years now, Garstang Tennis Club will once again be hosting an Open Afternoon on Sun 19th May 2:00pm - 5:00pm. The event is part of an initiative backed by the Lawn Tennis Association called the ‘Nature Valley British Tennis Weekend’ which not only encourages people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to take up or – in some cases – return to the sport, but to have fun whilst doing so. Last year proved to be a very successful event but this year the club has the added

CATTERALL’S MENTAL HEALTH MILE Sun 19th May 3:00pm Catterall Park & Playing Field Team ShazzAnn is organising this monthly mental health mile event at Catterall Park. It will usually be held on the third Sunday of the month. Registration is from 2:00pm. The event is free and invites people of all abilities to run, walk and talk. Cover one mile, any way you can on foot, wheels (pram or wheelchair). Donations can be made at the cake stall on the finish line and will help fund future events with any surplus going to local charities which support mental health. The mental health mile initiative was inspired by a similar event in Lancaster called LegItLancaster. It’s a great opportunity to get the family out and because it’s only a mile anyone can do it. There’s fresh air and a chance to walk and talk with friends and family. For more information contact Sharon Hartley 07495 018 003 or email me at boardmanann3@gmail.com Ann Boardman

GARSTANG MILLENNIUM GREEN Family Event Mon 6th May 10:30am - 3:30pm Volunteers of the Millennium Green will be welcoming people to the Green as part of the Garstang Walking Festival. The Green was acquired and developed as part of the national scheme of ‘breathing spaces’ near towns. We are grateful for the support we have had over the years and recognised in awards from both the local and national Britain in Bloom judges. We know many people appreciate the Millennium Green but for those who may not, here is a good chance to visit. There will be a trail for people to follow, either by using a leaflet, or being led by a volunteer, that will pick out points of interest, including views and features and aspects of natural history. Also, other activities should be

available, which may be weather dependant. There are picnic tables around the site, mainly in the children’s area which is dog free. Also, there are a number of benches around the site, so take advantage of them. The glorious display of daffodils is coming to an end but hopefully wild garlic and other flowers will be taking their place. We strongly suggest people come in from the town, possibly parking in the High St. car park (Pay and Display) and follow the path by the River Wyre to the Green. After passing under the bridge continue beside the flood gates and you come to an entrance, a distance of about 300 metres. The other entrance is at the end of Wyre Lane where there is very limited parking! We hope to see you on Bank Holiday Monday, 6th May. Please visit our website at www. garstangmillenniumgreen.org.uk Colin Sills

AGE = PAIN? ] I encounter many patients each week with all manner of injuries and problems from an acute strain from overworking in the garden to much deeper, chronic pain and disease.

And on goes the list of injuries with the same excuse. The most frustrating part for me is when people say, ‘Well what can I expect at my age?’ with resignation.

From all these interesting cases and fascinating people that I meet there is a common theme that many of them use to explain away their problems. The bizarre thing being that it is a common theme people use to explain their problem regardless of their age and it goes something like this:

Should we expect pain and low energy as we age? The simple answer is no. Of course the ageing process does occur and means we will not be doing a 100 meter sprint at 70 like we did at 20! But ageing does not have to arrive with a host of health problems and a gradual reduction in your ability to function well.

‘It must be my age’. I’ve been told that phrase or words to that effect from people in their twenties all the way up to their eighties and beyond. Pulled a muscle? ‘It must be my age’. Got lower back pain? ‘It must be my age’. Low energy? ‘It must be my age’. Pain in your foot? ‘It must be my age’.

One big part of this problem appears to be that we have quite literally been hypnotised by society to believe we must face a gradual decline so we behave accordingly. There are a few basic things you can do to maintain good health as you age and remain pain free. Firstly, eat whole foods. Avoid processed foods and cook from scratch. Do not buy ready meals. Bear in mind that a balanced diet requires each of the three macronutrients with every meal: Protein, carbohydrates and fat. An example of this is that if you have cereal or toast for breakfast that is basically carbohydrate rich and thus out of balance. I guarantee you will have poor energy and cravings with such a breakfast unless there is fat and protein involved too. So to gain balance here a simple example would be pate on toast – then you get all three macronutrients in your breakfast and will have more energy through the day. Take a B vitamin supplement – Viridian’s range of High Five supplements are excellent. B12 is particularly important for energy levels. Take a Vitamin D supplement too. Most of us in the north are deficient in this vital vitamin – and you only get Vitamin D from the sun when your shadow is shorter than you are which is only for a few months up

TIME TO CHAT

here where (apparently) it’s grim!

Fri 31st May 10:30am - 12:30pm Garstang Library

And lastly, never forget, your body is a moving machine and thrives and heals with movement. We are not a car that wears out when used! Our body loves movement and much pain, including that of arthritis eases with gentle movement. As an extra, do make sure you practice balance exercises every day. Even standing on one leg is simple but important every single day. If you cannot do that now, start practising it – and please, I implore you, do put your other leg down if you feel your balance going. PS: If you have a pain – get someone to have a look at it so it can be fixed and be aware pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs do not fix problems but cover them up leading to potential further trouble down the line. Nick Tofalos

Would you like to come for a chat and make new friends in a friendly, informal group? Jenny and Netta would like to invite you to join them at Time to Chat on the last Friday of every month at Garstang Library. For details contact Jenny 07905 903 955 or myself. Netta Blundell (01995) 604131

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES

Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?

Dr Finlay Sutton

If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.

Brenda’s Testimonial

Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

GARSTANG WINE CIRCLE Due to illness, the speaker from Bowland Forest Vintners was unable to attend the April meeting and Guy Pugh stepped into the breech with a selection of wines that he entitled ‘Turned Out Nice’. Many of us have perhaps bought a slightly unusual but interesting looking bottle of wine, and sometimes found it to exceed our expectations in terms of taste and quality. This was the basis for the selection presented at this meeting. Guy presented a total of eight wines to the meeting, five of which were obtained from our local Booths Store. We started with a sparkling rosé wine from Australia and followed with three whites from Armenia, Hungary and Italy. Armenia may be a bit of a surprise choice, but archeological finds have suggested that

this part of the world is where wine culture may have begun, perhaps as much as 4500 years BC. The sparkling wine was made using Pinot Noir, but all of the whites were made from unfamiliar grape varieties that we might normally ignore. The four reds were from Italy, USA (California), Spain and Australia and made from more familiar grape varieties, but the names given to the wines, or the bottle shape or label might draw the attention of the more adventurous wine buyer. That was the intended message of the evening - when buying wine, be a little adventurous and don’t always go for the familiar! It was an interesting and entertaining evening that clearly provoked a great deal of discussion amongst members. Thanks go to Diana and Colin Bell for the excellent food provided during the evening, and Philippa Catterall for the Vote of Thanks. The next meeting of the circle will be on Mon 20th May 7:30pm in the Arts Centre, when we will be entertaining Simon Jackson from David Byrnes of Cltheroe. Details from Alan Jefferson (01995) 601842. GARSTANG ARTS CENTRE (cont) Traditional history tells us that the ukulele was taken to Hawaii by the Portuguese and then found its way back to Europe via the USA. But ancient papers recently uncovered in the archives of the Garstang Courier suggest that the ukulele may have originated in Catterall. In 1509 a luthier from Abbeystead came to work in Catterall and he was surprised by how small the locals were. So he developed a small four stringed instrument especially for them and its popularity soon spread to Garstang. Towards the end of the 16th century an adventurer from Garstang took one on his travels to Madeira and swapped it from some fortified wine. All this was lost in the mists of time, but now we can fill in that missing link. Ukuleles in May Easter is over and Spring is getting serious.

The daffs are dying and the birds are ravenously feeding their young. What better time of the year to play the ukulele? We are having our own open mic evening when any member of the group can get up and perform for an appreciative and supportive audience. We restrict this event to members and their personal guests, but there is no restriction on membership of the group, so if you fancy trying out the ukulele come along any Sunday and join us. COFFEE STOP

CAT SMITH MP

Coffee Stop opens as a Community Cafe on most Tuesday mornings.

Hello everyone. As I write the sun is bursting through the blinds and its feeling more like a summer’s day than spring – which is very welcome – but also very concerning given the issues to do with global warming and the environment.

Volunteers from Inglewhite Church and the local communities are there to serve tea and coffee as well as cake or a toasted tea cake. Our aim is to provide a safe and friendly place for us to get together and make new connections. If you’re new to the area or if you’ve previously considered coming along it would be great to welcome you. We open at 10:00am and close around 12 noon. Why not call in for any part of the morning that suits you? Free parking, cycle space and disabled access are available at both venues. We look forward to welcoming you during May as per the dates below. Inglewhite Church on Tues 14th & 28th May Catterall Village Hall on Tues 7th May. Lesley Hardman 07980 070 349

The environmental campaigning by schoolchildren and young people across the Lancaster, Over Wyre and Fleetwood constituency has been powerful and influential. In a breakthrough moment I’m pleased the heads of two of the world’s most influential central banks, Mark Carney, the Bank of England’s Governor and the Governor of the Banque de France have now urged other financial regulators around the world to carry out climate change stress tests to spot any

Climate change poses significant risks to banks and insurers from rising instances of catastrophic weather-related events, such as heatwaves, droughts and floods, which could land them with significant losses. There are also risks for financial firms as governments accept the need to tackle climate change because banks that have lent to companies reliant on burning fossil fuels run the risk of steep financial losses.

We will now consult on changing the Bank of England’s mandate to reflect the climate change emergency highlighted by the Extinction Rebellion protest and schoolchildren’s strikes across the world.

Mr Carney has warned that a ‘massive reallocation of capital’ is necessary to prevent global warming above the 2°C maximum target set by the Paris climate agreement, with the banking system required to play a pivotal role.

I want to thank the school children and young people for their commitment to this cause. I urge them to continue reminding us all that we have just twelve years left for global warming to be kept to a maximum of 1.5C, beyond which even half a degree will significantly worsen the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people.

CAT SMITH MP (cont) Local councillors are elected to represent their local community and can make a real difference to the quality of our daily lives and prospects whether that’s to do with planning, bin collections or potholes. It really matters to me that people exercise their democratic right to vote so please find the time to nip to the polling booth. I’ve been contacted by a large number of constituents in Knott End who have expressed their concerns relating to holidaymakers in caravans and motorhomes parking in the lay-bys on the Esplanade. Constituents have explained that the holidaymakers often park there for days at a time and prevent local residents from using the parking facilities to access local services. I wrote to Lancashire County Council who told me that they do not have the resources to improve the situation, but they say they are prepared to work with Wyre Borough

28

Council (WBC). I’ve now written to the Chief Executive of WBC urging him to investigate the matter and take steps to prevent the situation happening again this summer. I’m also aware that in some local areas there are parking restrictions in place to prevent the same situation happening, and some feel this could be suitable for Knott End? I’d welcome your views so feel free to contact me. Email me on cat.smith.mp@parliament.uk or phone my office on (01253) 490440. Last month on my website I was delighted to highlight the work of the National Autistic Society (NAS). As an officer of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Autism I know how important the work of the NAS is. This condition is a lifelong, developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people, and how they experience the world around them.

CAT SMITH MP (cont) The NAS is the UK’s largest provider of specialist autism services. Or you can contact Blackpool NAS 07500 974 309 or email Nasblackpool.group@nas.org.uk This month I’m highlighting the life-changing work of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. The NSPCC is the leading children’s charity fighting to end abuse in the UK and Channel Islands. Using voluntary donations which make up around 90 per cent of their funding, they help children who’ve been abused to rebuild their lives, they protect children at risk, and they

find the best ways of preventing child abuse from ever happening. For children and young people experiencing difficulties, they may not have someone in their lives that they trust and feel they can talk to. The NSPCC’s Childline service provides a safe, confidential place for children with no one else to turn to, whatever their worry, whenever they need help. Children can contact Childline 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on 0800 1111. In 2017/18 Childline counsellors delivered almost 6,200 counselling sessions to children living in Lancashire. This month sees Mental Health Awareness week, Mon 13th May - Sun 19th May. Soroptimists in this country are working particularly hard on this topic as the theme of our current federation president Sue Williams is ‘Think on It!’, promoting the importance of good mental health and well-being in all that we do. Although there are over 200 classified forms of mental illness, these are grouped into 5 major categories: Anxiety Disorders, Mood Disorders, Schizophrenia/Psychotic Disorders, Dementias and Eating disorders. The theme for 2019 is Body Image – how we think and feel about our bodies. This is an issue that can affect any of us at any age. Too many people suffer mental health issues in these modern times – as many as 1 in 5 people have experienced issues. So are you surviving or thriving – if in doubt, seek help. New Soroptimist Year We’ve just had our AGM, so this is now our new year. Like all organisations, we are constantly evolving and adapting to the way the world demands but our core values remain the same – to Empower, Educate and Enable women and girls. Now, we know everyone is so busy nowadays but why not take some time just for you and your own mental health? It’s amazing how a few hours a month can benefit you and achieve wonders for women and children everywhere – so why not come along and discover more. GARSTANG CAMERA CLUB 60th Anniversary When Garstang Camera Club was established in 1959 its founder members wanted a club open to all, one that encouraged skill and creativity in all aspects of photography. These same principals draw present members together today and the club benefits still from the active participation of members of long standing. Early members included Len Wilkinson, Kathleen Holmes, Margaret Hunt, George Pearson and Dick Fenton. They are remembered particularly as instrumental in the club’s early history. Initial meetings took place in Dick’s home in Bowgreave Post Office. Five other venues were used prior to 1966 when the club moved to its current base at Garstang Arts Centre.

In its early years the club collaborated to establish a federation of five small North Lancashire Camera Clubs. Declining interest and dwindling membership closed three of those clubs, but Garstang and Holme still meet every year ‘to do Battle’. We also have a yearly five way ‘Battle’ with Bispham, Lytham St Annes, Poulton-le-Fylde and North Fylde Camera Clubs. The club is also affiliated to the Lancashire and Cheshire Photographic Union which comprises 96 regional clubs with almost 4000 members in total. The club meets on Wednesdays from September to May and these evening sessions include visiting speakers, internal competitions, inter-club competitions, and practical workshops. In summer months members meet for several photo excursions. We have a good programme this year with visits planned to Glasson, Lancaster, Blackpool, Kirkby Lonsdale and Oulton Park. When the club first began, home processed black and white pictures were the norm. Then came colour slides, colour prints and

Next came digital and Garstang Camera Club seized each new opportunity as it arose and applied its founders’ principals encouraging members skills and creativity in all aspects of photography. Most photography has gone ‘Digital’ and many people use Camera Phones as well as DSLR for their photography. Digital photography allows creative photo editing in software such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom, the modern-day equivalent of the Darkroom. However, prints are still a big part of Garstang Camera Club. Come along and see our Print Exhibition which is on now until Thurs 2nd May. In the current year, the club has had some success in the competitions it has held against other clubs so hopefully, we are still doing something right. On Wed 1st May we have talks and images from club members on two very different places, Manchester and Uganda. Following our AGM on Wed 8th May it will be our Presentation Night and Annual Dinner with guest speaker Ian Aldcroft, President of the L&CPU. Our 2019/20 Programme starts in September with some great and informative speakers booked and Workshops with help and tips about photography.

BEN WALLACE MP By the time this article goes to print Easter will be over and we will be hurtling towards summer. I do hope we can look forward to a good summer weather-wise. Brexit continues to dominate the press and Westminster. Whenever possible, I try to write about my work within the constituency in this article and stay away from national political issues, but in this case I find myself making an exception. My view has always been that we should respect the outcome of the referendum and seek to leave the European Union without delay, ideally with a deal. This has been the rationale behind all my votes in Parliament. I read all the emails and letters I receive from my constituents. As you

36

can imagine, there have been hundreds. I appreciate that public opinion within our constituency and across the country is divided. My inbox and mailbag are full of different demands from different constituents. Some people want the Government to press ahead with Brexit on WTO terms, some seek a second referendum and others want to stop Brexit altogether. I am also very aware of the frustration felt by many – myself included – about the protracted nature of the Parliamentary debate. This has come about as the last General Election did not give any one party a clear majority and as a consequence the Prime Minister has, so far, been unable to secure support from across the House for her deal. The arithmetic is just not currently in place for any one of the options to be successful. Whatever you or I would like, the numbers just don’t add up. That’s why we will only be able to proceed

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) with Brexit if we can agree a deal. I, therefore, support the Prime Minister’s deal as this will respect the referendum outcome and deliver Brexit. It will also ensure that we leave the European Union on good terms with our European neighbours and enable us to continue to work together on a number of important issues, such as security. As the UK’s Security Minister, I am very aware that a no-deal Brexit would see us lose access to the many law enforcement tools we need in the 21st Century. Organised crime and terrorism are more international than ever, so we need a strong relationship and access to intelligence and data held by members of the European Union. Things seem to be changing on a daily basis but, I remain determined to respect the outcome of the referendum and leave the European Union without delay.

Although what is going on in Westminster is extremely important for the future of our great country, it is also vital that as the local Member of Parliament for Wyre and Preston North, I don’t lose sight of the importance of working within the local community. I am delighted to have met up recently with the Chief Executive of Wyre Council, Garry Payne, and the Council’s Head of Planning, David Thow. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the Council’s Local Plan and issues of concern to residents, as well as taking the opportunity for a general catch up. Ensuring the voice of constituents is heard at the correct level is very important and during these meetings I take the opportunity to do just that. Wyre Council are the planning authority and I having a good working relationship with them which allows me to

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) pass on the concerns of my constituents. Other important meetings which have taken place recently include discussions with senior Police Officers. Again constituents contact me highlighting many issues. These range from knife crime to police funding. I wrote in a recent article how pleased I was to have been given the opportunity to accompany a local Police Officer on vehicle patrol in the local area. It is vital that I see situations from many perspectives and it was great to speak to the Local Officer as well as Senior Officers. I believe we have an outstanding Police Force locally and, indeed, throughout Lancashire. In my last article I spoke of my sadness at the news that former Wyre Councillor and Mayor Gordon MaCann had sadly passed away. Since then his funeral has taken place at St Oswald’s Church and I am certain it was a comfort to the family to see so many people in attendance. A fitting tribute to a much loved local representative and champion of the people. I continue to meet residents at my advice surgeries covering a wide range of issues. Please remember if you would like to attend, one the most effective ways to contact me is by e-mail, with a brief description of the issues you wish to raise and your contact details. Get in Touch It is worth bearing in mind that I can often offer assistance without the need for a meeting. If I can be of any assistance to you please ring my Office at the House of Commons on 02072 195 804 or my Constituency Office on (01995) 672977, email me at wallaceb@ parliament.uk or write to me at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA. Maintaining the safety of the children taking part in the procession, as well as those watching, is always a high priority. If you could spare a couple of hours on the day to help as a steward it would be much appreciated (you will also get a prime spot to watch from!). As always the committee depends on help from local people. One of the biggest tasks is collecting donations from all the homes around the town. If you could spare a couple of hours to help please get in touch – it is easy to do and very much needed. Business and House to House collections will start at the beginning of May – please help by making a donation. This year there will be donation envelopes available for those who miss the House to House collectors, these will make it easy to drop off donations at designated locations around the town centre. SCORTON STEAM

OUT RAWCLIFFE OVER 60’S

The Big Heave-ho Comes to Scorton

Our meeting of the Out Rawcliffe Over 60’s took place at the Village Hall on Tues 2nd April. 26 members attended, all given a warm welcome by the Chairman, Mr. John Ireland.

Prepare for a wild ride as engine-busting, ear-rattling mini tractor pulling debuts at this year’s Scorton Steam ahead of a planned tractor pulling championship event at the same Scorton Showground venue next year. Watch everything from souped up ride-on lawnmowers to highly strung methanolinjected, supercharged V8 engine tractors rip it up to get the furthest down a 100m dirt track pulling the heaviest weight. For anyone who prefers the horsepower generated by engines of a by-gone era, the 15th annual Scorton Steam gathering, which takes place on Sat 15th June and Sun 16th June, remains one of the North West’s biggest yearly steam fests, showcasing a collection of more than 600 vehicles of all vintages. In addition, the main arena attraction for 2019 will see the return of the world famous Purple Helmets Motorcycle Stunt team. Engines blend with family fun as Scorton Steam celebrates Father’s Day weekend with fairground rides, crafts, live music, beer tent, food and shopping stalls all spread over 30 acres to make it the perfect day out for all generations, especially given its location off the A6 just 15 minutes from either Junction 32 or 33 of M6. Scorton Steam opens daily at 9:00 am but visitors can camp from Friday to Sunday night. At night, Scorton changes from a carnival to a festival vibe with illuminated vehicle displays, licensed bar, food and music.

Ethel Davies and Jane Webster were given birthday cards as they will be celebrating special birthdays this month. 20 games of dominoes were played and prizes presented to the winners: 1st John Higginson, 2nd Jane Webster, 3rd Ethel Davies, 4th John Horrocks, 5th Barbara Newton, 6th Kathleen Woodman. The booby prize went to Joyce Williamson. Refreshments followed, then the raffle, gifts kindly donated by the members. The May trip to Grassington and Ilkley will be on Thurs 30th May. Usual pickup points and times. Our next meeting, the AGM, will be held on

CATTERALL GARDENING CLUB Hello again to the happy gardeners of Catterall and district! We are always so lucky to have such excellent speakers and April was no exception when we had Christine and Jayne from Greenthumb answering all our lawn care problems. This was followed by Cyril Williams on the subject ‘Growing Vegetables My Way.... and I’m Getting Old’. Thank you to all for educational and entertaining talks. Our next meeting is on Tues 21st May 7:00pm - 9:00pm at Catterall Village Hall. Ian and Sheila Lowe of High Park Nursery, Southport will give us a practical demonstration in how to make ‘Perfect Baskets and Tubs’ and will bring plants to sell. Ian and Sheila specialise in pinks and carnations. The annual membership remains at £15, while visitors pay £3 at the door. This includes fabulous home made cakes, tea or coffee. Raffle items are always welcome and also any spare plants for the plant sales table in aid of Club funds. Join our small and friendly group of gardening enthusiasts. Happy Gardening! GARSTANG IN BLOOM We are back to our evening gardening sessions now that the days are longer. We work mainly on the perennial beds at this time of year, tidying, pruning and weeding. Hopefully at the time of reading this, the old and dilapidated phone box will have disappeared too! We are having a plant sale on Sat 18th May, 9:00am - 2:00pm. There will be lots of small to medium pots containing perennials, shrubs, vegetable plants, houseplants and herbs, all at bargain prices. We’ll be on the High St by the Market Hall. This is the perfect time of year to refresh your garden or plan your troughs and planters and if you have any spare plants to donate to the stall, they’ll be very welcome. We’d be grateful of your support as this is an important fundraiser for us. We’d also like to thank Bombshell Betty Boutique for the raffle that raised £230 for our funds. Fantastic work, Naomi!

Tuesday, an exhibition which most members will be keen to enter and which lasts the whole of May. The Jean Grange Exhibition is one of the principle exhibitions of the year and always brings out some of our best works. And so the Group continues with a very busy programme throughout the year every Wednesday afternoon (except at Christmas!) For more information, just pop in to Garstang Arts Centre on Wednesdays between 1:15pm and 4:00pm or contact Carolyn Wood (01253) 812270. Bill Barnes

ROTARY Directory of Organisations

Local

Garstang Rotary Club is preparing a Directory of Local Organisations. It is generally accepted that peoples’ wellbeing is enhanced by regular participation in social activities. We are fortunate to live in an area that has a rich variety of local organisations that cater for virtually every interest and need. Magazines like ‘Focus’ and ‘In Focus’ do an excellent job of publishing information about the activities of many of these organisations. However, there is a significant number of organisations who do not regularly correspond with the editors of these magazines and this makes it harder for people to find out about and contact these organisations. Likewise, Tourist Information Centres have information about local organisations, but they struggle to maintain and update this information.

Those that provide companionship and social activities – for example luncheon clubs, Women’s Institutes and drop-in coffee sessions.

To ensure that information about your organisation is included in the directory, please get in touch with us by e-mail at or weatherell¬_roger@hotmail.com telephone at 07711 129 604 before Sun 30th June to make sure that your organisation is included on our list. We will then contact you to obtain your formal agreement to being included in the Directory and to agree the content of your entry. Rotary Stroke Awareness Day Thurs 9th May For many years Rotary throughout Great Britain and Ireland has been running events associated with Stroke Awareness. In particular, to raise the public awareness of

As part of its service to our community the Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre has decided to publish a Directory of Local Organisations and intends to produce this in a printed format and on-line. We want this directory to be as comprehensive as possible. So far, we have identified around 75 organisations operating in Garstang and Over Wyre using the entries in local magazines and the knowledge of our members, but we believe that there are many more than this. We are interested in three types of organisations: • •

Those that offer opportunities for people to volunteer – for example, charity shops and visiting schemes. Those that cater for specific interests – for example singing groups, reading circles and walking groups.

Thank you to Ferrari’s for a delicious meal to celebrate our 99th Claughton on Brock WI Birthday Party. It was an evening full of chatter and fun. This is exactly what our WI group does best. I can’t wait for next year when we’ll be celebrating our 100th in great style. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month. Why not join us in May when our little grey cells will have to be working hard as the competition is ‘Four Letter Words From RESOLUTIONS’.

GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS Donations The Race Night held in April at Kirkland Memorial Hall was a great success with all 117 guests enjoying a fun evening. Everyone betted heavily using their initial free £25 stake money provided and consumed an excellent fish and chip supper for a ‘knockdown’ price of £10 a ticket. Our thanks go to all of the race sponsors and those who helped to support this event in any way. It had been agreed in advance that proceeds, still to be finalised, would be shared between three chosen charities;- the North West Children’s Society, Bowland and Pennine Mountain Rescue Team and Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). The Lions have decide to donate a sum of £100 to support and sponsor Garstang
