PILLING EGG HUNT Pilling held it’s first community Easter Egg Hunt on the New Community Field on Sat 13th April. Families had fun searching for eggs and solving clues. Everyone who entered received a chocolate egg and there was a grand prize draw for a giant chocolate Ostrich egg! There were refreshments on the field and the

event was followed by a disco at The Elletson Arms where the fun continued with an egg decorating competition and raffle. We had a visit from Pilling’s own giant chicken to judge the egg competition. The event was held to raise much needed funds for the approaching Coffee Feast. Thanks to everyone who supported the event either by making refreshments, providing raffle prizes or simply turning up to support. Look out for more events in the near future. CARE HOME CONNECTS WITH LOCAL COMMUNITY The family residing in Kepplegate Care Home in Preesall had a wonderful evening when they were entertained by the local Beaver Scouts, who achieved an Acvity Badge at the same me! The boys, aged between six and eight years & all dressed in their disncve turquoise uniforms, tu interacted with the elderly people for a fun-packed evening. Most made themselves busy with arts and cras, while others played chess or helped with crossword puzzles.

Care Home Manager, Lilia Higginson, said “It was great to see the Beavers and our Kepplegate family geng along so well together and it gave everyone a real boost on a grey evening!” Some days later John Ramsey and Jessie Meylan were accompanied by two of the team to Kepplegate represent the care company at the “launching” of the defibrillator at nearby Carter’s Charity near Primary School. There has been a defibrillator at the school for a few years, but as it was situated inside the school building, it was only available for use during school hours.

When Kepplegate gave a donaon to the school from funds raised at its annual Garden Party, Headmaster Brendan Hasse, said it kick-started the school’s own fundraising drive to buy an fund outside casing for their defibrillator, so making the potenally life-saving apparatus available for the community at all mes. The Kepplegate conngent joined other donors, a local paramedic, children from Year 6 and Preesall’s Mayor for the ceremonial ‘cung of the ribbon’ outside the school.

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE Message from the Practice Manager

see what our new front room has to offer.

The Front Room

Blackpool Smile

Let us introduce you to Our Front Room! With a northern name and a homely environment, The Front Room is our very own community space at Over Wyre Medical Centre. We realise that there are a vast amount of services and resources across the Fylde Coast that are not always easily accessible for the patients of Over Wyre Medical Centre. The doctors would like to bring these facilities to our doorstep and therefore we have come up with the concept of The Front Room.

We are proud to announce that Blackpool Smile (a group for chronic pain sufferers) will hold a session on every 1st, 3rd and 4th Monday afternoon, 1:00pm - 3:00pm, from the Front Room. There is a small charge to attend. Please register your interest at reception or by calling Sue (01253) 824870 or 07747 505 672.

The room is situated just adjacent to the reception desk at our Preesall surgery. There is a coffee machine available in the waiting room and lots of information on medical conditions and local services. There will be a grand opening on Wed 8th May at 12:30pm. Please feel free to pop along and

There are lots more speakers and groups in the pipeline but if there are any volunteers out there to run a choir, a book club or a board game session, we’d love to hear from you by emailing megan.penswick@nhs.net or Alison Harrison at alison.harrison24@ nhs.net Age UK – Lancashire Older Veteran’s Talk Thurs 9th May 10:00am – 12:00 noon. We also have some great news. Alison Stirzaker, who is a Navigator for Lancashire Older Veterans (Preston Fylde & Wyre Age UK) would like to arrange a talk to coincide with the Front Room launch on Thurs 9th May 10:00am – 12 noon. Alison’s role includes working for the Lancashire Older Veterans Project,

providing help and support for anyone who has served in the armed forces, born before 1950. Alison’s talk will include an outline of Age UK Lancashire and the work they do and she will also elaborate on her veteran’s work. She will be delighted to deal with any queries regarding benefits, access to care etc. She can arrange home visits for any veterans who may need more help. It also includes their families and Veterans need only have served a day! Alison will bring some leaflets and some freebies. For an expression of interest please contact Alison Stirzaker 03003 031 234 or 07779 093 228. You can also email Alison at astirzaker@ageuklancs.org.uk Please do come along to this fantastic event. MEDICAL CENTRE (cont) to help with a variety of problems including insurance claims and benefit applications. Unfortunately, this work does not form part of the Over Wyre Medical Centre’s NHS contracted work, and as such, is a private request and will incur a fee. It therefore may be worth double checking if you really need a GP letter before having to pay for one. In many situations, the advice written in a letter would be sought independently by a third party, such as an insurance company, without any charge to you. If you really do need a letter, and we feel it is appropriate for us to produce one, please give us at least two weeks’ notice. This is because our contracted clinical work has to take priority. Home Visits If you are housebound or too unwell to attend surgery, it is possible for a home visit by a GP or Nurse Practitioner to be arranged. We

ask if possible that requests for a home visit are made before 11:00am. This is because morning surgery tends to finish around this time and visits are done before afternoon surgery commences. Obviously, we understand that people can become suddenly unwell and that requests on occasion have to be made later in the day. These requests will be dealt with by the duty doctor who will decide if an emergency late visit is indicated. With the support of our fantastic patients, the lovely community spirit that Over Wyre generates and our great clinical team we will together ensure that we continue to meet all your healthcare needs for the next generation and beyond. Thank you for your continued support. John MacPhee - Practice Manager (01253) 951165

KNOTT END LIBRARY (cont) Mindful Eating Mon 20th May 2:30pm – 4:30pm Run by Lancashire Adult Learning, this session aims to increase your knowledge of mindfulness and how this technique can be applied to how you eat to benefit your health and wellbeing. The course is free but booking is essential as spaces are limited. Friends of Knott End Library (F.O.K.E.L) In March we held another successful Brew & Book Sale, where we raised almost £70 towards the purchase of new equipment etc. for our Library. Many thanks to all who came and gave us their support. Our first two fundraising events have both proved successful, and show that F.O.K.E.L. should be successful in our efforts to enhance the experiences for all at the Library. Our next such event will be another Brew

& Book booksale event on Sat 25th May 10:00am - 12 noon. By the time you read this article, we will have held our first Craft Fair, which we hope will prove popular and successful. The second Craft Fair will be held to support the Library’s Get Creative week on Sat 11th May 10:00am – 2:00pm. If you would like to book a table or space at this event, please get in touch with Jan Foster (details below) to find out more about charges etc. We hope to hold three or four Craft Fairs during the year. Keep your eye on the Green Book, and the F.O.K.E.L Noticeboard in the Library for more information about forthcoming F.O.K.E.L events. FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES

Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?

Dr Finlay Sutton

If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.

Brenda’s Testimonial

Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

April was a busy month. Well known Les Darlow gave a pastel demonstration showing how to use the latest soft pastels in paint pans applied with sponges. A day workshop to follow was quickly booked up. Also Dave Wiles came to show us his rapid oil painting in the style of Bob Ross whom you may remember from the TV in the seventies. Our Lancashire afternoon tea was a great success. Jose organised sumptuous platefuls and our members baked cakes, arranged flowers, put on a display of our paintings and served our guests. Jean Curwen from Pilling recited Lancashire tales to our amusement. The money raised will pay towards equipment and art materials always needed. Also a kind

May Art Exhibition

Traditional history tells us that the ukulele was taken to Hawaii by the Portuguese and then found its way back to Europe via the USA. But ancient papers recently uncovered in the archives of the Garstang Courier suggest that the ukulele may have originated in Catterall.

Friends and fellow artists, Patricia Roberts and Mary Queen will be holding a joint exhibition of their work from Tues 7th May to Thurs 30th May. All the paintings are for sale, an opportunity to own an original piece of art at a reasonable price. Sheila Tearle (01995) 603816 Garstang Ukulele Group As readers of Focus will have noticed, I like to delve into the history of the ukulele and in the Victorian tradition of writing a British history, only the facts are altered to make the story more interesting. This month I’ve been inspired by the geographical flexibility of The Bay on ITV where Morecambe has gained a harbour very similar to Whitehaven and Grange over

In 1509 a luthier from Abbeystead came to work in Catterall and he was surprised by how small the locals were. So he developed a small 4 stringed instrument especially for them and its popularity soon spread to Garstang. Towards the end of the 16th century an adventurer from Garstang took one on his travels to Madeira and swapped it from some fortified wine. All this was lost in the mists of time, but now we can fill in that missing link. Ukuleles in May Easter is over and Spring is getting serious.

We are having our own open mic evening when any member of the group can get up and perform for an appreciative and supportive audience. We restrict this event to members and their personal guests, but there is no restriction on membership of the group, so if you fancy trying out the ukulele come along any Sunday and join us. Poetry Appreciation Group Fri 24th May 2:00pm - 4:00pm. This month’s topic led by Graciela Lemos and Jeff Ashworth is entitled ‘Seasons’. From the budding of spring to the depths of winter, the seasons affect plants, animals and people. Poetry through the ages has reflected those changes in their many forms. There is a wonderful collection of poems for us all to choose our favourites. Visitors are always very welcome to the Poetry Group. Come and sit and listen or join in if you wish. Don’t Miss the Sights and Sounds of Springtime in Bowland! If the scent of a bluebell wood or the musical call of a lapwing make your thoughts turn to spring, get ready to discover some of Bowland’s fantastic natural history with Festival Bowland’s springtime events programme. Wyre Coast and Countryside Service have

been keeping an eye out for curlews and hares in the Bleasdale area whilst the RSPB explored a beautiful valley above Slaidburn with their first moorland walk of the season on Sat 20th April. If you missed that date there will be other chances to join the RSPB during the spring and summer. May starts with Wyre’s evening walk in the lovely Brock valley on Wed 1st May, followed by a bumper day on Sat 4th May when there are three events to choose from: a wildlife walk around Garstang; the East Lancs Ornithologist’s Spring Bird Watch at Stocks Reservoir and a search for Green Hairstreak butterflies and Emperor moths with a Butterfly Conservation guide in the Trough of Bowland. The Bank Holiday weekend events finish with a springtime walk around Nicky Nook and the first of this year’s Sunday bluebell tea walks in Calder Vale, both organised by

It was very well attended and everyone had a great time. During May we are holding free Forest school sessions for parents and toddlers. Please come and join us and experience what a special place it is for the children to learn outdoors. Booking is essential. Ash class started the half term with a visit from West End in Schools and the children learned a dance to re-tell a familiar story ‘How to Catch a Star.’ Ash class also discovered that there are a lot of castles featured in traditional tales, so they decided to go and visit a real castle. They spent the morning looking around Lancaster Castle and identifying all the features that they have been learning about. To celebrate super work, they had a ‘Traditional Tale’ dressing up day in the last week of term. no sam me F ob pl asu ree lig ing res at se , f io rv re e n es ice t & i m Carpets • Amtico at es Laminate • Cushion Vinyl

In RE, Oak class have thought about how the Easter story shows new life and have made wooden crosses to create an amazing Easter Garden in the school’s nature area. Willow Class have been exploring Europe this half term and have enjoyed many aspects of this topic, including food, languages, art and dancing. The flamenco lesson was a highlight for all and has been posted on our Facebook page. We have created our own travel agency and are looking forward to opening our Travel Expo for one afternoon only, after the holidays! Swimming for Willow class has also been an important part of the term, with many children gaining certificates and improving their stamina and technique. We are ready for our new topic on water next term. Maple Class have been telling their class about their favourite interests, hobbies and research in our Public Speaking heats. Elm class had a visit to BAE Systems organized by A & G Precision. They took part in a Lego workshop and saw a Hawk Jet. We organized a whole school project when we helped with the Keep Britain Tidy campaign in conjunction with Wyre Borough Council, by collecting litter around the school grounds and the local area, including the beach and promenade at Knott End. After Easter we will be having a talk from the RSPCA, which is our school charity for the Summer term, to explain how we can help fundraise for the Charity. We have made a connection with the Friends of Knott End Library and will be hosting Knit and Natter sessions with our children to teach

them how to knit/crochet. Our dance classes continue to thrive. Preschool have learnt lots of new dance moves with Miss Gemma and performed them to parents and our Head teacher. Next term we will be starting cheer leading. Karen Rapaccioli (01253) 810324

FLEETWOOD FLYERS Time passes by so quickly and Fleetwood Flyers has had two tournaments to reflect on. The first of two at Heywood Sports Centre was a successful morning, winning two, drawing three and gaining six points. The second was a bit of a disaster, only managing one win and one draw, another four points to our tally. We will have to buck up our standard to improve on last season’s second place. We now hold four sessions a week, Wednesday being our most attended. This session is more suited to the beginner as we have two types of game, a slower game and a quicker game suited for the more energetic. The session takes place on the open pitches at Poolfoot Sports Academy between 12:30pm and 2:00pm. Monday’s session takes place in the cages also at Poolfoot 7:00pm - 8:00pm. Both

these sessions have coaches supplied by Fleetwood Community Trust. Friday’s session is again on the open pitches. It is self regulated and will suit the more energetic. Sunday’s session is quite new and is well attended and takes place in the cages at Poolfoot 10:00am - 11:00am. It is well advised to arrive ten minutes before start time to warm up and sort out teams. There is a women’s only session for the Over Thirties which takes place on Tuesdays at 7:00pm. All sessions are £3 after your first session which is free. www.fleetwoodwalkingfooty.co.uk www.@fleetwoodwalkingfooty.co.uk George Greenall (01253) 825206

GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS Donations The Race Night held in April at Kirkland Memorial Hall was a great success with all 117 guests enjoying a fun evening. Everyone betted heavily using their initial free £25 stake money provided and consumed an excellent fish and chip supper for a ‘knockdown’ price of £10 a ticket. Our thanks go to all of the race sponsors and those who helped to support this event in any way. It had been agreed in advance that proceeds, still to be finalised, would be shared between three chosen charities;- the North West Children’s Society, Bowland and Pennine Mountain Rescue Team and Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). The Lions have decide to donate a sum

of £100 to support and sponsor Garstang Cricket Club who are due to hold their beer festival in May. A further donation of £300 is to be made to Garstang in Bloom in addition to our previous support for their projects/activities including that given towards the Norah Hoyles memorial garden. A presentation was made to the Lions by the local Achieve, Change and Engagement Charity about their work to re-engage vulnerable or disaffected young people (ages 11-25 years). Our club are keen to support their intended work in the Garstang area and would want to help in a variety of ways which could providing access to local networks and also future fund raising events. The Lions Club will be organising another delivery soon to Fylde Women’s Aid who have a continued need for new clothing items

ROTARY Directory of Local Organisations Garstang Rotary Club is preparing a Directory of Local Organisations. It is generally accepted that peoples’ wellbeing is enhanced by regular participation in social activities. We are fortunate to live in an area that has a rich variety of local organisations that cater for virtually every interest and need. Magazines like ‘Focus’ and ‘In Focus’ do an excellent job of publishing information about the activities of many of these organisations. However, there is a significant number of organisations who do not regularly correspond with the editors of these magazines and this makes it harder for people to find out about and contact these organisations.

48

Likewise, Tourist Information Centres have information about local organisations, but they struggle to maintain and update this information. As part of its service to our community the Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre has decided to publish a Directory of Local Organisations and intends to produce this in a printed format and on-line. We want this directory to be as comprehensive as possible. So far, we have identified around 75 organisations operating in Garstang and Over Wyre using the entries in local magazines and the knowledge of our members, but we believe that there are many more than this. We are interested in three types of organisations: •

Those that offer opportunities for people to volunteer – for example, charity shops and visiting schemes.

PILLING BAND

Silly season, as we call it, is upon us at the band and we have very few free weekends as we try to attend as many local events as possible.

Those that cater for specific interests – for example singing groups, reading circles and walking groups. Those that provide companionship and social activities – for example luncheon clubs, Women’s Institutes and drop-in coffee sessions.

To ensure that information about your organisation is included in the directory, please get in touch with us by e-mail at weatherell¬_roger@hotmail.com or telephone at 07711 129 604 before Sun 30th June to make sure that your organisation is included on our list. We will then contact you to obtain your formal agreement to being included in the Directory and to agree the content of your entry. Rotary Stroke Awareness Day Thurs 9th May For many years Rotary throughout Great Britain and Ireland has been running events associated with Stroke Awareness. In particular, to raise the public awareness of one of the main causes of strokes: high blood pressure. Thanks to the generosity of Booths in Garstang, the skill of trained staff from Heartbeat and the assistance of the Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre, there is an opportunity to have your blood pressure checked on Thurs 9th May between 10:00am and 12:30pm.

May will see us start the Gala season off at Scorton Bikes & Barrows Festival on Sat 4th May and then we will be at Garstang Childrens Festival on Mon 27th May. On behalf of the band and Preesall & Knott End Gala Committee can I thank everyone who attended our concert in Knott End in April. We had a brilliant night and raised a fantastic amount for both organisations.

The test will be located on the 1st floor of the Booths store in Garstang and is conducted in confidential surroundings. Subject to the number of people requiring the service the actual test takes a matter of minutes. 60th Anniversary When Garstang Camera Club was established in 1959 its founder members wanted a club open to all, one that encouraged skill and creativity in all aspects of photography. These same principals draw present members together today and the club benefits still from the active participation of members of long standing. Early members included Len Wilkinson, Kathleen Holmes, Margaret Hunt, George Pearson and Dick Fenton. They are remembered particularly as instrumental in the club’s early history. Initial meetings took place in Dick’s home in Bowgreave Post Office. Five other venues were used prior to 1966 when the club moved to its current base at Garstang Arts Centre. In its early years the club collaborated to establish a federation of five small North Lancashire Camera Clubs. Declining interest and dwindling membership closed three of those clubs, but Garstang and Holme still meet every year ‘to do Battle’. We also have a yearly five way ‘Battle’ with Bispham, Lytham St Annes, Poulton-le-Fylde and North Fylde Camera Clubs. The club is also affiliated to the Lancashire and Cheshire Photographic Union which comprises 96 regional clubs with almost 4000 members in total. The club meets on Wednesdays from September to May and these evening

GARSTANG CAMERA CLUB (cont) sessions include visiting speakers, internal competitions, inter-club competitions, and practical workshops. In summer months members meet for several photo excursions. We have a good programme this year with visits planned to Glasson, Lancaster, Blackpool, Kirkby Lonsdale and Oulton Park. When the club first began, home processed black and white pictures were the norm. Then came colour slides, colour prints and high-volume affordable colour processing shops. Next came digital and Garstang Camera Club seized each new opportunity as it arose and applied its founders’ principals encouraging members skills and creativity in all aspects of photography. Most photography has gone ‘Digital’ and many people use Camera Phones as well as DSLR for their photography. Digital photography allows creative photo editing in software such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom, the modern-day equivalent of the Darkroom. However, prints are still a big part of Garstang Camera Club. Come along and see our Print Exhibition which is on now until Thurs 2nd May. In the current year, the club has had some success in the competitions it has held against other clubs so hopefully, we are still doing something right. On Wed 1st May we have talks and images from club members on two very different places, Manchester and Uganda. Following our AGM on Wed 8th May it will be our Presentation Night and Annual Dinner with guest speaker Ian Aldcroft, President of the L&CPU. Our 2019/20 Programme starts in September with some great and informative speakers booked and Workshops with help and tips about photography. CAT SMITH MP Hello everyone. As I write the sun is bursting through the blinds and its feeling more like a summer’s day than spring – which is very welcome – but also very concerning given the issues to do with global warming and the environment. The environmental campaigning by schoolchildren and young people across the Lancaster, Over Wyre and Fleetwood constituency has been powerful and influential. In a breakthrough moment I’m pleased the heads of two of the world’s most influential central banks, Mark Carney, the Bank of England’s Governor and the Governor of the Banque de France have now urged other

financial regulators around the world to carry out climate change stress tests to spot any risks in the system, while also calling for more collaboration between nations on the issue. Climate change poses significant risks to banks and insurers from rising instances of catastrophic weather-related events, such as heatwaves, droughts and floods, which could land them with significant losses. There are also risks for financial firms as governments accept the need to tackle climate change because banks that have lent to companies reliant on burning fossil fuels run the risk of steep financial losses. Mr Carney has warned that a ‘massive reallocation of capital’ is necessary to prevent global warming above the 2°C maximum target set by the Paris climate agreement, with the banking system required to play a pivotal role.

FYLDE FOREIGN LANGUAGE CENTRE

We will now consult on changing the Bank of England’s mandate to reflect the climate change emergency highlighted by the Extinction Rebellion protest and schoolchildren’s strikes across the world.

We teach French, German, Spanish, Italian, Greek, Russian, Portuguese & Mandarin to learners of all ages & abilities. Each group class lasts one hour & costs £10 per person

I want to thank the school children and young people for their commitment to this cause. I urge them to continue reminding us all that we have just twelve years left for global warming to be kept to a maximum of 1.5C, beyond which even half a degree will significantly worsen the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people.

I’d like to remind everyone that the local elections take place on Thurs 2nd May. Local councillors are elected to represent their local community and can make a real difference to the quality of our daily lives and prospects whether that’s to do with planning, bin collections or potholes. It really matters to me that people exercise their democratic right to vote so please find the time to nip to the polling booth. I’ve been contacted by a large number of constituents in Knott End who have expressed their concerns relating to holidaymakers in caravans and motorhomes parking in the lay-bys on the Esplanade. Constituents have explained that the holidaymakers often park there for days at a time and prevent local residents from using the parking facilities to access local services. I wrote to Lancashire County Council who told me that they do not have the resources to improve the situation, but they say they

CAT SMITH MP (cont) are prepared to work with Wyre Borough Council (WBC). I’ve now written to the Chief Executive of WBC urging him to investigate the matter and take steps to prevent the situation happening again this summer. I’m also aware that in some local areas there are parking restrictions in place to prevent the same situation happening, and some feel this could be suitable for Knott End? I’d welcome your views so feel free to contact me. Email me on cat.smith.mp@parliament.uk or phone my office on (01253) 490440. Last month on my website I was delighted to highlight the work of the National Autistic Society (NAS). As an officer of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Autism I know how important the work of the NAS is. This condition is a lifelong, developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people, and how they experience the world around them. The NAS is the UK’s largest provider of specialist autism services. Their trained staff and volunteers bring passion and expertise to the lives of 100,000 autistic people every year. If you’d like to find out more visit www. autism.org.uk There’s also a support group in Over Wyre that will soon start regular coffee mornings. Find the Parent Carer support page and group on Facebook. Or you can contact Blackpool NAS 07500 974 309 or email Nasblackpool.group@nas.org.uk This month I’m highlighting the life-changing work of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. The NSPCC is the leading children’s charity fighting to end abuse in the UK and Channel Islands. Using voluntary donations which make up around 90 per cent of their funding, they help children who’ve been abused to rebuild their lives, they protect children at risk, and they

find the best ways of preventing child abuse from ever happening. For children and young people experiencing difficulties, they may not have someone in their lives that they trust and feel they can talk to. The NSPCC’s Childline service provides a safe, confidential place for children with no one else to turn to, whatever their worry, whenever they need help. Children can contact Childline 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on 0800 1111. In 2017/18 Childline counsellors delivered almost 6,200 counselling sessions to children living in Lancashire. SCORTON STEAM Prepare for a wild ride as engine-busting, ear-rattling mini tractor pulling debuts at this year’s Scorton Steam ahead of a planned tractor pulling championship event at the same Scorton Showground venue next year. Watch everything from souped up ride-on lawnmowers to highly strung methanolinjected, supercharged V8 engine tractors rip it up to get the furthest down a 100m dirt track pulling the heaviest weight. For anyone who prefers the horsepower generated by engines of a by-gone era, the 15th annual Scorton Steam gathering, which takes place on Sat 15th June and Sun 16th June, remains one of the North West’s biggest yearly steam fests, showcasing a collection of more than 600 vehicles of all vintages. In addition, the main arena attraction for 2019 will see the return of the world famous Purple Helmets Motorcycle Stunt team.

Engines blend with family fun with fairground rides, crafts, live music, beer tent, food and shopping stalls all spread over 30 acres to make it the perfect day out for all generations, especially given its location off the A6 just 15 minutes from either Junction 32 or 33 of M6. Scorton Steam opens daily at 9:00 am but visitors can camp from Friday to Sunday night. At night, Scorton changes from a carnival to a festival vibe with illuminated vehicle displays, licensed bar, food and music. With free parking, day entry to Scorton is just £10 for adults, £7 for concessions and children aged 10 to 16 years with younger children admitted for free. Camping costs £70 per tent/caravan from Friday to Sunday, inclusive of free entry to the show for two people. BEN WALLACE MP By the time this article goes to print Easter will be over and we will be hurtling towards summer. I do hope we can look forward to a good summer weatherwise. Brexit continues to dominate the press and Westminster. Whenever possible, I try to write about my work within the constituency in this article and stay away from national political issues, but in this case I find myself making an exception. My view has always been that we should respect the outcome of the referendum and seek to leave the European Union without delay, ideally with a deal. This has been the rationale behind all my votes in Parliament. I read all the emails and letters I receive from my constituents. As

Knott-End based home nail salon specialising in all aspects of nails & toes

you can imagine, there have been hundreds of messages. I appreciate that public opinion within our constituency and across the country is divided. My inbox and mailbag are full of different demands from different constituents. Some people want the Government to press ahead with Brexit on WTO terms, some seek a second referendum and others want to stop Brexit altogether. I am also very aware of the frustration felt by many – myself included – about the protracted nature of the Parliamentary debate. This has come about as the last General Election did not give any one party a clear majority and as a consequence the Prime Minister has, so far, been unable to secure support from across the House for her deal. The arithmetic is just not currently in place for any one of the options to be successful. Whatever you or I would like, the numbers just don’t add up. That’s why we will only be able to proceed with Brexit if we can agree a deal. I, therefore, support the Prime Minister’s deal as this will respect the referendum outcome and deliver Brexit. It will also ensure that we leave the European Union on good terms with our European neighbours and enable us to continue to work together on a number of important issues, such as security. As the UK’s Security Minister, I am very aware that a no-deal Brexit would see us lose access to the many law enforcement tools we need in the 21st Century.

Organised crime and terrorism are more international than ever, so we need a strong relationship and access to intelligence and data held by members of the European Union. Things seem to be changing on a daily basis but, I remain determined to respect the outcome of the referendum and leave the European Union without delay.

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) Although what is going on in Westminster is extremely important for the future of our great country, it is also vital that as the local Member of Parliament for Wyre and Preston North, I don’t lose sight of the importance of working within the local community. I am delighted to have met up recently with the Chief Executive of Wyre Council, Garry Payne, and the Council’s Head of Planning, David Thow. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the Council’s Local Plan and issues of concern to residents, as well as taking the opportunity for a general catch up. Ensuring the voice of constituents is heard at the correct level is very important and during these meetings I take the opportunity to do just that. Wyre Council are the planning authority and I having a good working relationship with them which allows me to pass on the concerns of my constituents.

loved local representative and champion of the people. I continue to meet residents at my advice surgeries covering a wide range of issues. Please remember if you would like to attend, one the most effective ways to contact me is by e-mail, with a brief description of the issues you wish to raise and your contact details. Get in Touch It is worth bearing in mind that I can often offer assistance without the need for a meeting. If I can be of any assistance to you please ring my Office at the House of Commons on 02072 195 804 or my Constituency Office on (01995) 672977, email me at wallaceb@ parliament.uk or write to me at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA. Ben Wallace MP

Other important meetings which have taken place recently include discussions with senior Police Officers. Again constituents contact me highlighting many issues. These range from knife crime to police funding. I wrote in a recent article how pleased I was to have been given the opportunity to accompany a local Police Officer on vehicle patrol in the local area. It is vital that I see situations from many perspectives and it was great to speak to the Local Officer as well as Senior Officers. I believe we have an outstanding Police Force locally and, indeed, throughout Lancashire. In my last article I spoke of my sadness at the news that former Wyre Councillor and Mayor Gordon MaCann had sadly passed away. Since then his funeral has taken place at St Oswald’s Church and I am certain it was a comfort to the family to see so many people in attendance. A fitting tribute to a much

fascinating people that I meet there is a common theme that many of them use to explain away their problems. The bizarre thing being that it is a common theme people use to explain their problem regardless of their age and it goes something like this: ‘It must be my age’. I’ve been told that phrase or words to that effect from people in their twenties all the way up to their eighties and beyond. Pulled a muscle? ‘It must be my age’. Got lower back pain? ‘It must be my age’. Low energy? ‘It must be my age’. Pain in your foot? ‘It must be my age’. And on goes the list of injuries with the same excuse. The most frustrating part for me is when people say, ‘Well what can I expect at my age?’ with resignation. Should we expect pain and low energy as we age? The simple answer is no. Of course the ageing process does occur and means we will not be doing a 100 meter sprint at 70 like we did at 20! But ageing does not have to arrive with a host of health problems and a gradual reduction in your ability to function well. One big part of this problem appears to be that we have quite literally been hypnotised by society to believe we must face a gradual decline so we behave accordingly. There are a few basic things you can do to maintain good health as you age and remain pain free. Firstly, eat whole foods. Avoid processed foods and cook from scratch. Do not buy ready meals. Bear in mind that a balanced diet requires each of the three macronutrients with every meal: Protein, carbohydrates and fat.

Are you using a product or service from an advertiser?

AGE = PAIN? (cont) An example of this is that if you have cereal or toast for breakfast that is basically carbohydrate rich and thus out of balance. I guarantee you will have poor energy and cravings with such a breakfast unless there is fat and protein involved too. So to gain balance here a simple example would be pate on toast – then you get all three macronutrients in your breakfast and will have more energy through the day. Take a B vitamin supplement – Viridian’s range of High Five supplements are excellent. B12 is particularly important for energy levels. Take a Vitamin D supplement too. Most of us in the north are deficient in this vital vitamin – and you only get Vitamin D from the sun when your shadow is shorter than you are which is only for a few months up here where (apparently) it’s grim!

And lastly, never forget, your body is a moving machine and thrives and heals with movement. We are not a car that wears out when used! Our body loves movement and much pain, including that of arthritis eases with gentle movement. As an extra, do make sure you practice balance exercises every day. Even standing on one leg is simple but important every single day. If you cannot do that now, start practising it – and please, I implore you, do put your other leg down if you feel your balance going. PS: If you have a pain – get someone to have a look at it so it can be fixed and be aware pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs do not fix problems but cover them up leading to potential further trouble down the line. RSPCA Special Appeals Sarah Sarah is an adorable and affectionate girl who is looking for a new home after the death of her owner. She has an easy going nature and really enjoys interacting with people so will make the perfect companion for someone who is wanting a lap cat! Sarah currently lives with her sister Daisy as she did in her previous home but Daisy is proving to be quite dominant so we would be happy for Sarah to be rehomed individually with possibly another calm cat or together as a duo with Daisy providing her home has lots of space (this can be discussed further with staff).

Sarah has gained a lot of confidence since she arrived and has settled into our cattery routines relatively quickly but may be a little shy to begin with. However with reassurance, we are sure her sweet nature will soon begin to show. Daisy Daisy is a gorgeous and affectionate girl who is looking for a new home after the death of her owner. Daisy was initially quite scared on arrival but she is now much more confident and is often spotted playing with her toys or keen to interact with people. This adorable girl just needs time to get used to her environment and new faces but once she has relaxed and gotten to know you, she

SOROPTIMISTS Women inspiring action, transforming lives Mental Health This month sees Mental Health Awareness week, Mon 13th May - Sun 19th May. Soroptimists in this country are working particularly hard on this topic as the theme of our current federation president Sue Williams is ‘Think on It!’, promoting the importance of good mental health and well-being in all that we do. Although there are over 200 classified forms of mental illness, these are grouped into 5 major categories: Anxiety Disorders, Mood Disorders, Schizophrenia/Psychotic Disorders, Dementias and Eating disorders. The theme for 2019 is Body Image – how we

think and feel about our bodies. This is an issue that can affect any of us at any age. Too many people suffer mental health issues in these modern times – as many as 1 in 5 people have experienced issues. So are you surviving or thriving – if in doubt, seek help. New Soroptimist Year We’ve just had our AGM, so this is now our new year. Like all organisations, we are constantly evolving and adapting to the way the world demands but our core values remain the same – to Empower, Educate and Enable women and girls. Now, we know everyone is so busy nowadays but why not take some time just for you and your own mental health? It’s amazing how a few hours a month can benefit you and achieve wonders for women and children everywhere – so why not come along and discover more. BackPacks Project Can we take this opportunity to send a big thank you to the Mustard Seed (a One World and FairTrade shop) in Garstang, which has been and continues to be a true friend to Soroptimists. They have acted as a collection point for us now for a number of years for items for our backpack project (we’ve now packed and sent off over 400 backpacks). So why not show your support not only for us by dropping off more items for our project but also for the causes which are close to the heart of the Mustard Seed - supporting work overseas and FairTrade.

GARSTANG CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL This year’s Garstang & District’s Children’s Festival takes place on the Spring Bank Holiday, Mon 27th May. The procession starts at 11:00am and proceeds to the Market Cross for the crowning of the 2019 Festival Queen, Emily Guy. More information will be available on the Facebook page and website - details of which can be found at the end of this article. It is still possible to enter a float – schools, families, clubs, friends, groups etc. If you would like to enter please get in touch. Contact Frank Worthington (01995) 604628. There will be free rides and amusements on Moss Lane playing field during the afternoon, together with children’s games (also free). The Festival catering tents will be open for business as usual with a range of low cost refreshments available. If anyone would like to offer their help with the catering – even for only an hour or two – it would be most appreciated, just get in touch with us.

As always the committee depends on help from local people. One of the biggest tasks is collecting donations from all the homes around the town. If you could spare a couple of hours to help please get in touch – it is easy to do and very much needed. Business and house to house collections will start at the beginning of May – please help by making a donation. This year there will be donation envelopes available for those who miss the house-tohouse collectors. These will make it easy to drop off donations at designated locations around the town centre. For further information about any of the above, get in touch. David Lewis 07739 429 174 facebook.com/GarstangChildrensFestival www.garstangchildrensfestival.org

The Fancy Dress competition is always popular and we hope to attract even more entrants this year. Anyone can enter – if you feel like taking part entries are accepted from 5:15pm on Moss Lane playing fields, with judging taking place between 5:30pm and 6:00pm and along the procession route (more information will be given in the Programme nearer the event). Maintaining the safety of the children taking part in the procession, as well as those watching, is always a high priority. If you could spare a couple of hours on the day to help as a Steward it would be much appreciated (you will also get a prime spot to watch from!). If you think you could help please get in touch.

PREESALL TOWN COUNCIL Gordon McCann Councillors and villagers have paid tribute to the memory of Gordon McCann, who gave many years of dedicated public service as a councillor for Preesall and Wyre. A very well-attended funeral service for Cllr McCann, who died in March, at St Oswald’s Church in Preesall honoured his selfless contribution to public life over many years. Preesall Town Council wishes to place on record its deep gratitude for all Cllr McCann’s work on behalf of our community. Flower Power Preesall and Knott End is once again entering this year’s Best Kept Village competition, for which the judging will commence on Sat 8th June. After last year’s success, Preesall and Knott End’s entry will be in the Champions category.

Litter picks are scheduled to take place at noon on the third Monday of each month for the rest of the year, volunteers to meet at the Youth and Community Centre. Bus Change Timings on the 2c route are to be altered from June after concerns over noise from buses idling outside the Black Bull pub. This follows a complaint to Blackpool Transport from a resident concerned over noise at the stop, where buses wait if they are running early. On Sun 23rd June a re-scheduled timetable will be introduced in an effort to cut down on such delays. New Councillors No Preesall Town Council election will take place in May as 12 nominations mean all candidates are voted in unopposed. Joining the council in May will be Andrew Cropper, Jane Cropper, Tony Johnson, Kath Nicholls, Anne Tarpey-Black, David Williams and Karen Woods. Current councillors Rodney Black, Rosina Lawson, Jean Mutch and Tom Reilly are standing down. Grateful thanks go to them for their service. Six candidates are standing to represent Preesall and Knott End on Wyre Council in the poll on Thurs 2nd May with European elections on Thurs 23rd May. Civic Dates This year’s Annual Town Meeting, which all residents are invited to attend (only those on the electoral register are entitled to speak and vote), will take place on Mon 20th May at 6:00pm at the Youth and Community Centre, Preesall. Civic Sunday is at St.Oswald’s church on Sun 26th May with wreath laying by the Mayor at 10:00am, followed by a church service at 10:30am.

Councillor Andy Haydock (see Parish Council Focus article for contact details).

The SSRA committee has taken up several issues with our Parish Council. We are working closely with County Councillor John Shedwick on road safety, sites of Cadent gas boxes, drainage and housing matters. Residents expressed concern about the apparent drugs problem in Stalmine and Over Wyre and the trend for laughing gas canisters. On the plus side, it was felt that we have a lovely, friendly village with little crime.
