PREESALL & KNOTT END IN BLOOM
OVER WYRE GARDENING CLUB
We hope that you will have noticed that tubs and flower beds have been planted up for the past month. This year we have purchased nine self watering tubs. These have a water reservoir in the base and therefore reduce the amount of watering needed and save water. This was in case of another hot summer – no further comment!
Mon 15th July 7:30pm St Bernard’s Church Hall Hackensall Road, Knott End
Our judging date for North West In Bloom is Mon 1st July and we will be doing a litter pick and a general tidy up on the evening of Sun 30th June. We will be very grateful for any help that evening. HAMBLETON WI Jackie Mafi from Wigan, who loves sweets and chocolate, entertained us with pictures and comments about our own childhood favourites - jelly babies, black jacks, pear drops etc. In Oswaldtwistle Mill, Lancashire, there is still the biggest pear drop in the world, weighing 92 stone, behind glass of course. Globally, what was once a treat and used only for special occasions to celebrate a national event, chocolate and sweets are now a daily indulgence. Long ago the Aztecs used cocoa powder as a currency to barter and trade for other commodities. In Ancient Egypt honey with dried fruit was sold. Not until the advent of sugar in the middle ages did sweet comfits take off and that was to make kissing more pleasurable. Needless to say only the rich could afford these treats and the comfit box became a status symbol.

Sat 6th July – Hambleton Gala. We will be in the procession.
Cadburys publicised milk chocolate and Milk Tray by using clever advertising and the advent of TV created another genre. We all remembered the James Bond character delivering the box to the lady of his choice by climbing through her bedroom window. Jackie ended the show with a trawl through lots of sweets, Pontefract cakes, liquorice allsorts, jelly babies, Wine Gums, Polo Mints Smarties, Love Hearts, Fisherman’s Friend, Everton Mints and ended with Uncle Joes Mint Balls made in Wigan. A sweet end to a mouth watering show. The competition for a necklace made of sweets was won by Sue Cross, 2nd Linda Foy, 3rd Pat Bick.

A YEAR FOR WILDFLOWERS Thank you to everyone who has helped to grow seedlings or plant the wildflower bank on the New Community Field in Pilling. We have now completed the task of planting the last of the seedlings which include foxgloves, violets, teasels and many native flowers which are hugely beneficial to insects, birds and bees. I would like to thank the Brownies who gallantly braved the conditions in order to finish the job of transplanting the wildflowers. Actually we all had a great time and went home caked in mud. Now we wait. Take a look as you walk around and see how many new wildflowers you can spot over the coming months. Katrina Bell (01253) 790649

OVER WYRE COMMUNITY CHOIR have to be organised! We also hope to sing at Burnside Garden Centre on Thurs 12th Dec for late night opening and possibly other venues such as Knott End Library during the run up to Christmas. Our concert performed on Sat 8th June was a great success! Together with the Pilling Silver Jubilee Band we entertained a full house! Thanks to all those who supported us, those who donated raffle prizes and for the hard work of all who participated in the concert. We will be able to support local charities again this year and be able to purchase new music for our Christmas Concert, on Sat 7th Dec at 2:30pm. Watch out for further details! We’re now taking a summer break, hopefully to enjoy some sunny weather. Rehearsals will begin again on Thurs 29th Aug at 7:30pm in St. Oswald’s Church Hall. We have already decided on the Christmas programme. I know, Christmas is six months away but we

New members are always welcome to join us, no auditions. If you love to sing and would like to make new friends then the Community Choir is the place for you. Happily, the numbers in our male section have increased but there is still room for more. Ladies seem eager to join us but you gentlemen are more reluctant - do come and try the Choir out, we promise not to bite! Singing is very beneficial, you can’t feel sad when you sing and it is good for your lungs! You are welcome to come along to the rehearsal in August or, for further information please contact Rosemary (01253) 813837 or myself. Jenny Blyth (01253) 391341

ROTARY Duck Race Owing to the condition of the River Wyre, high and rising on Sat 8th June, the Rotary Duck Race had to be called off at the last minute for safety reasons. For the record a photo was taken to show the state of the river with feathered ducks without numbers! Members of the public had sponsored the numbered ducks at £1.00 each. As a substitution for the race using these numbers we generated a random number drawing system and executed this in the rain at the race site by the river. The results were as follows: • •
1st No 389 prize £100 2nd No 347 prize £25
• •
3rd No 279 prize £10 The last home was No 311 prize £10
President of the Rotary Club Richard Fisher said it was most unfortunate about the weather but we were delighted by the generous support provided by the people of Garstang. Our street collection raised £575 which will be donated to local and international charities supported by your local Rotary Club including youth sport and social activities, world-wide Polio eradication and international flood relief. The Rotary Club purchased the yellow ducks, specially weighted to float in the river. Up to 2000 numbered ducks are available for hire. If you are interested please contact a member of the Club. GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS Donations The Race Night proceeds have been shared between our three chosen charities of the North West Children’s Society, the Bowland and Pennine Mountain Rescue Team and Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). However a further donation of £100 has also now been made to the Rosemere Cancer Foundation from the monies raised by this event. The Lions agreed to sponsor a local person involved in doing a gruelling one hundred mile cycle ride in aid of Prostate Cancer UK and have now presented a cheque for £200 after the completion on this journey. The Lions Club will be organising another delivery soon to Fylde Women’s Aid who
have a continued need for new clothing items (babies, small children or ladies), new toys, new cosmetic or new toiletries. This appeal is ongoing with our collection point being the Resource Centre (the offices of the old Liberal Club) on Bridge Street. Events and Activities Twenty five giant luxury Easter Eggs were raffled in April in various local public houses, cafes and businesses and the total profit made of £770 will be used to support local charities and events. Our thanks go to all of the venues who participated and the many customers who purchased the individual numbers on each of the boards. A number of Lions enjoyed helping at the spectacular Colour Dash held in aid of St John’s Hospice. This was a memorable and fun event with a wide range of age groups taking part by either running or walking. The

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES
Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?
Dr Finlay Sutton
If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.
Brenda’s Testimonial
Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Over Wyre Branch The branch meeting was held on Thurs 13th June with a good attendance of 13 of our 23 members present. We had another new potential member which will bring our total up to 24. Keep coming I promise you will find it interesting. The coach trip to the National Memorial Arboretum is on Wed 21st Aug. The cost should be between £20 and £25 and the trip is open to all, not just RBL members. There will be an additional cost for anyone wanting to take the small train round the grounds – approximately £6 but this is worth every penny. Anyone wishing to go on this wonderful excursion contact either myself or Tom Reilly 07967 142 078 email: thomasreillyjnr@
gmail.com. Currently we only want names of those interested the actual cost and how to pay will be notified at a later date. Royal British Legion (RBL) literature has been placed in the Front Room in the Medical Centre publicising the RBL schemes that benefit those who have served in the Armed Forces and their families. These are paid for by your donations to TRBL Poppy Appeal. Information is available on the Welfare Break Centre in Southport, the Admiral Nurses Scheme, the Free Will Writing Service and the Battle Back Centre, to name just a few. The Secretary attended the RBL National Conference. One of the motions was to have the method of applying for tickets for the Saturday evening performance of the Festival of Remembrance held in the Royal Albert Hall revert back to the previous method. RBL Branches could then apply for up to 4 tickets. Hopefully the Board of Trustees will

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION (cont) implement that motion. Thanks to the hard work of our top Poppy Appeal seller, Ray, who has sold all 400 of our allotted D-Day 75th Anniversary lapel pins, we have been able to bank a further £404+ boosting our Poppy Appeal. The Chairman and the Secretary were invited to the launch of the Brickhouse Farm Cottages Hydrotherapy and re-vamped Bistro. We had no idea that such a facility existed in the Over Wyre Community. The facilities are second to none and will be recommended to RBL Operations Department to see if it can be utilised in the RBL Holidays for Severely Disabled Scheme. The food/buffet was good and nice coffee as well. It is worthwhile paying a visit. The Branch will be represented at the Preesall and Knott End Gala as well as having a decorated vehicle in the Parade. Thank you Eric. Come and visit us in the RBL
Gazebo and learn what TRBL is really about or find out what the money you donated to the Poppy Appeal is used for. We will not have representation at the Hambleton Gala as unfortunately no-one is available that day. At the Branch meeting discussions were held as to whether or not the Branch should add on a Branch subscription to cover administration costs etc. Having decided yes, the amount to be added was agreed at £3.00 which will bring the annual membership fee to £20.00 each year. £17.00 to RBL (every member pays this amount) and £3.00 to the Branch. NAAFI CAFE Over Wyre Veterans Meet and Greet
regarding which is the superior Service!
The June meeting of the Group was very well attended and numbers are increasing month on month.
This is exactly what the Veterans Meet and Greet NAAFI Cafe is about - to try to bring together those from Over Wyre who are serving or have served in the Armed Forces regardless of age, gender or which service they served in. It is an informal atmosphere just for a chat with like-minded people with something in common – all have served in HM Armed Forces.
This month we had representatives from NHS Fleetwood who provided Health Checks for anyone attending the meeting. We also had two members bring along memorabilia of their family members who had served in the Armed Forces. Thanks Eric and Roy. I don’t think there wasn’t one of us who was not impressed at what was produced. It was fascinating and evoked a huge amount of interest. They certainly could have mounted a very interesting exhibition in the Library or caught the interest of the local Family History Group. It also brought up a few service stories from the other members of the Group. A few laughs and a few taunts at each other
We are hoping that there will be more memorabilia brought to the next meeting. We will also be inviting Alison Stirzacker from Age UK Lancashire to come and tell us what can be offered to ex-members of HM Forces of a certain age as some members of the Group may not qualify for the various services provided. Again I would like to highlight that under the NHS Covenant all Medical Centres are now supposed to ask a patient whether or not

they are or have served in HM Forces and if yes their documents should be annotated as such under the code number NHS 13JY.
The band have had a busy and wet June attending numerous village festivals. We had a brilliant night at the joint concert with the Over Wyre Community Choir and hope we can join forces again with them. The hall was full and the audience were really appreciative of the music. Thank you to everyone who supported the band and the choir by attending.
As the message gets out more ex-Service personnel have added their names to the medical centre records. Keep them coming. Ask the next time you visit the Over Wyre Medical Centre. The Over Wyre RBL Branch are organising a coach trip to the National Memorial Arboretum on Wed 21st Aug. Currently we have about 30 people interested but we would like to fill all 48 seats. Anyone interested should speak to either Tom Reilly (07967142078) or myself. If you have served in HM Forces at any time in the past then please come along for a natter and a chat about past times, problems that you may have, current affairs, it just doesn’t really matter because IT IS GOOD TO TALK. On Sun 16th June we headed to Kirkby Lonsdale for their annual entertainment contest. We started the day with a rehearsal at Whoop Hall Country Club and would like to say a big thank you to them for the lovely rehearsal room and the much needed teas and coffee that they provided. The band played number 5 so at around 2:30pm we marched into Kirkby Lonsdale Square playing the march ‘Death or Glory’ and then played our concert programme. We played ‘Bandology’, ‘Let Me Try Again’ (solo by Andy Hall), ‘Calling Cornwall’, ‘Hatrick’ (a horn trio), ‘Be Still in the Presence of the Lord’ and finished the programme with a piece called ‘Prismatic Light’. The rain unfortunately decided to appear just as we were playing the last piece so the audience did get a little bit wet. It was lovely to see some familiar faces in the audience who had come for the day. The band came 2nd in our section and 2nd overall and the comments from the adjudicator were very positive. July is still busy for the band as on Sat 6th July we are at Eagland Hill Coffee Feast, Preesall Gala on Sat 13th July, Whitechapel Songs of Praise Sun 14th July, Shireshead Songs of Praise Sun 21st July and Pilling Coffee Feast on Sat 27th July. Let’s hope that the rain gives us a break in July. The band have a well-earned rest in August but are taking part in The Seven Stars Beer Festival weekend and will be playing on Sat

The Wyre Flood Forum - under the Chairmanship of Carl Green, Wyre’s Chief Engineer - met at the Civic Centre on Thurs 13th June for their regular quarterly meeting to discuss and raise issues across the Borough relating to flooding, both river and surface water. Representatives of United Utilities, Environment Agency, Natural England, Wyre River Catchment Partnership as well as Wyre and Lancashire Councils attended plus Flood Action Groups (FLAGs) comprising local residents with a direct interest from Garstang,
If you have an interest in the subject matter you will be very welcome to join one of the FLAGs or just turn up at the next meeting on Thurs 12th Sept 1:00pm. You can expect a robust exchange of views between residents and experts. Get in touch with Carole Leary, the Forum secretary on (01253) 891000 if you require information about your Action Group or report an incident to the Environment Agency Flood line on 03459 881 188. This quarter’s meeting started with a detailed presentation by Sophie Tucker of United Utilities on the work UU is doing to increase, repair and improve the water infrastructure known as Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). Although not a glamorous topic, SuDS affects so many properties and

WYRE FLOOD FORUM (cont) livelihoods in Wyre if it goes wrong. You only have to recall pictures of flooding in Lincolnshire in the recent weeks to be reminded of the consequences of heavy rainfall on sodden land. Next up was David Thow, Head of Planning at Wyre. He defended schemes on new housing estates which many blame for increased run off into rivers and watercourses causing flooding down stream such as the Link’s development at Kepple Lane, Garstang. It is a complex picture which requires developers to take more responsibility for attenuation schemes, not just for five years but in perpetuity. It is clear listening to FLAGs and individual residents that much more effort is required to keep drains clear and running by action on gullies by the County Council and residents and businesses.
You would be amazed listening to individual reports of the lengths some individuals go to to dispose of rubbish, even cement, into the drainage system. I heard one engineer say that where once upon a time it was sufficient to clean gullies annually it was now necessary to visit twice due to misuse. A leaflet entitled ‘Be Prepared for Flooding’ has been produced by the Council and will be distributed to residents. If you would like more information or advice visit www.wyre.gov.uk/flooding. If you would like more information about the Garstang FLAG or take part in an area walk with the Environment Agency later in the summer contact Councillor John Ibison john. ibison@wyre.gov.uk or myself. GARSTANG ICE CREAM FESTIVAL The second Garstang Ice Cream Festival will take place on Sun 21st July. Due to the huge crowds that came last year we have spread the festival over a bigger area, increased the number of ice cream stalls, activities, food and entertainment and organised much more parking for our visitors. The High Street will be the heart of the Festival and so will be closed to traffic from 9:30am until around 7:00pm. Other areas that will host activities for the Festival are Bridge Street, Church Street, Moss Lane playing field, Cherestanc Square, Park Hill Road, the riverside, Garstang Rugby Club and the Millennium Green. Parking: If you are coming from north of Garstang parking will be at Garstang Show field, off Wyre Lane. You can then walk along the riverside and Millennium Green areas of
the Festival into the High Street. If you are coming from the south of Garstang, parking will be at Castle Lane. This car park is closer to the High Street and disabled parking will be available there. These locations will be well signposted from the A6. Please note that both parking areas are on grass so they may be a bit uneven. Parking on these car parks will be £5 per car for the entire event. Please try and have your money ready as this will mean less queuing time. For more information see our website at www.garstangicecreamfestival.co.uk or find us on Facebook at Garstang Ice Cream Festival. We’ll look forward to seeing you at the Festival! The Ice Cream Team

HEALTH MYTHS & HEARTBURN I thought I’d start this month with a few myth busting facts about the human body... Did you know we all have twelve ribs on each side of our body? There is no extra rib for women as is often believed from the Adam and Eve story. A bone fracture is exactly the same as a bone break – the two terms mean the same thing. I often have people tell me they have never had a fracture but have broken a bone, not realising that it is one and the same! You CAN take your pulse with your thumb. The idea there is no pulse in your thumb so you should take a pulse with it is incorrect. If your thumb had no pulse it would be dead, every last bit of your body has a pulse because it all requires a blood supply. Most heartburn is caused by not enough stomach acid rather than too much. Which brings me to the heart of this month’s ramblings.
Are you taking long term antacids for heartburn and indigestion? Or taking stronger medication such as omeprazole or lansoprazole? These are known as proton pump inhibitors or PPIs. These appear to be relatively safe medications to take. Certainly you are unlikely to get an acute side effect from taking these type of medications but long term use, which appears to me to be at epidemic proportions, comes with a whole host of trouble. Because these drugs are reducing your stomach acids your body cannot digest effectively so you will begin to become deficient in vital minerals. Most notably, calcium, magnesium and Vitamin B12. Calcium deficiency is linked to osteoporosis, or brittle bones, which increases your risk of fractures. Magnesium deficiency increases your chance of having high blood pressure and

MYTHS & HEARTBURN (cont) seizures. I’d even suggest this contributes to your mental health and, in some cases, muscle cramps. B12 deficiency is well known to contribute to dementia. There are numerous other troubling problems caused by this group of drugs that suppress your body’s natural actions. There is a law of physics that ‘for every action there is a reaction’. This can be applied to your body too. If you keep suppressing it with a drug then something must occur somewhere else. There has to be a reaction to this suppression if it continues for too long. The suppression caused by PPIs increases your chance of heart attacks and strokes, infections, immune system problems, mental health issues and oesophageal cancer. The above problems come, not as a direct reaction to the drug but indirectly and the latest studies show that just over 4 in
every 100 people taking these drugs have premature death from these complications. Therefore, we need to work out how we can safely stop taking this medication where possible. If it is for heartburn there are simple, natural steps you can take. 1. Stop eating that which is causing the problem. Normally this is processed foods of one form or another. 2. Replace the antacid/PPI with ten organic almonds. Chew them to a paste and swallow. Goodbye heartburn. 3. OR drink fresh cabbage juice which will also fix your heartburn. Never take one of these tablets so that you can eat foods/drinks that you know cause you a problem. This is like ignoring the warning light on your car. Please learn to listen to your body and change your behaviour accordingly. Nick Tofalos (01995) 602833

SCARECROW FESTIVAL ARTS TRAIL Bringing art in the community to Garstang Scarecrow Festival Wyre Council is delighted to be working with the organisers of this year’s Garstang Scarecrow Festival to put together an arts trail along the towpath in the town between Kepple Lane and Bridge House Marina. Known as ‘The Towpath Project’, this new enhancement to the festival involves two artists’ residencies that have been organised by the Council’s Arts and Events team; one at Over Wyre Medical Centre and the other
at Garstang Library. Participants are contributing towards making different tableaus and way markers which will be installed and situated along the canal during the festival which takes place from Fri 5th July to Sun 7th July. Everyone is welcome to come along and work with the artists - pop into the Library or Medical Centre to find out when the next session is on. The project is part of an arts and health drive by the Council to encourage people to get involved with something creative and benefit from the positive health and wellbeing that results. The project coincides with the bi-centennial of the Lancaster Canal, and has support from the Canal and Rivers Trust. It will help promote the physical activity of walking along this beautiful waterway and being involved in an arts trail that will be seen by thousands of residents and visitors.

There they were given tea and having walked around the garden found the tea was taking effect but they weren’t allowed to use the toilet in the house. The maid was sent out with a pot.

PILLING LANE WI (cont) be looking for a husband, not just anybody, so she made a list. He had to be good looking, well mannered, earn enough to give her a good allowance and like to go walking and cycling and this she found in Charles Rigby who was a doctor, some fifteen years older than her. He was a townie though and didn’t join her when she went walking and cycling. She was the first woman in Preston to have a bike and got a lot of abuse and things thrown at her. She joined the Suffragette movement and was arrested but not sent to prison like the others as her fine had been paid by her father so he wouldn’t suffer any embarrassment. She then took herself off and set fire to Lord Leverhulme’s house in Rivington where she was arrested and sent to prison where she went on hunger strike. Because she kept her mouth tight shut they pushed a tube up her nose and down her
throat in order to feed her which was very uncomfortable. Later in life her husband decided to retire and because he was a townie and she a country woman they decided to buy a house in Llandudno. She stayed there while Charles returned to Preston to sell their home but he contracted pneumonia and died. Her only regret was not to be at his bedside and thank him for all he had done for her as he had given her the freedom to do anything she wanted to do. RSPCA Shortbread and Parsnip
Evie Evie initially found herself in our care after being picked up as a stray. She lacks confidence but we’ve seen a big improvement and Evie is beginning to trust us with her confidence growing daily. If you persevere, you will be rewarded as the longer you spend with her, the more relaxed, curious and playful Evie will become allowing familiar faces to give her gentle strokes where she will purr in enjoyment.
Shortbread (ginger) and Parsnip have found themselves looking for a new home after their owner could no longer care for them. They are both friendly guinea pigs and need an owner who will invest time in them, making sure they receive lots of human interaction and handling as they can be a little skitty at times. As they are a bonded pair, we would like the boys to be rehomed together.
Little Evie will need someone who has the patience and time to get to know her and she would do better in a quiet and calm home without children. She may be ok to live with other pets but a careful introduction is needed within the home once fully settled. Previous experience of fearful cats is required.

CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG (CRY) Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund Firstly, thank you to all who have supported our latest clothing collection or donated items in the new clothing bank on Catterall Village Hall Car Park. With your help a massive £210 was sent to CRY in June. The car park and playing field were transformed into a riot of colour and excitement for Catterall Gala. What a charming, lively event it was and such a lovely occasion to be a part of. Well done to the Gala committee for all their efforts throughout the year to put on this spectacle for our community and for the invitation to join in. Everyone’s generosity led to a further £195 being raised which will go towards funding vital heart screening for local young people. Thank you one and all. Can you help at the Scarecrow Festival? SOROPTIMISTS (cont) empowerment and enabling of women and children but also ourselves. Like any role in life, we must keep up to date and make sure we are compliant with all the latest methods of sharing knowledge. In May, we looked at our own mental wellbeing with a visit from MIND Lancashire. This event was delivered in a fun way, getting us to look at how we view life, how we can spread happiness and how we can support each other. Importantly, it taught us we are never alone and there is lots of help in our county to deal with our mental health. In early June, several of us travelled to Nottingham for a Development Day. A great chance to network and swap ideas. We covered quite a wide range of topics but all with the ultimate aim of making our organisation even better. We also attended the Rosebowl event where we delivered our ‘elevator pitches’ – three
new members came along. Now the long wait until September to see the results. Looking Ahead One important event we are gearing up for is the 100th anniversary of Soroptimists. This will be in October 2021 but we will be sharing news and items with you in the interim, highlighting the many events which have shaped our lives in general and women in particular. This month will see us out and about – we’re off to Crazy Golf and supper at the Flower Bowl – something some of us have never had a go at so – a new experience! You see, it’s not all hard work. Fun and friendship are a vital part of being a Soroptimist. Please continue to drop off your used backpacks or other items at The Mustard Seed Café, Park Hill Road (opposite the Wheat Sheaf Pub). STALMINE BOWLING CLUB The season continues to progress well, despite some winter-like weather! Few of us expect to have to wear thermals and waterproofs to play in June! Sun 9th June was fortunately an exception to the inclement weather and two competitions ran on the day – The Woodman Trophy for men and the Ladies Day Competition. After some really good, competitive games, Ben Duke won the men’s trophy and Marion Walmsley won the ladies trophy. Congratulations go to both players. Also, thanks go to those members who came and supported on the day. A great time was had by all. Our President’s Day is to be held on Sun 7th July. Will all members please put your

ST AIDAN’S NEWS Wow! We’ve started our new academic year already! We are ready for a summer break, but not before a busy summer half term. I am excited to discuss our current Primary School visits. This time every year we play host to lots of Year 5 pupils and give them a taste of what attending Saint Aidan’s is like. They get to experience a variety of subjects such as pond dipping for Science, learning a new language and trying exotic food in Modern Foreign Languages and even going on a prayer walk with our Chaplain, Opa. We love to see new faces and hope that the pupils thoroughly enjoy the day! We have recently said goodbye to our Year 11 Leavers, who have finally finished their GCSE exams. The Leaver’s Assembly took place last week and through some very teary eyes we saw some of our pupils for the last time before Results Day in August. We will, however, get to see most of them at the Prom. This will take place at the Village Hotel, Blackpool and we are always so excited to see our former pupils glammed up and seeing some of the brilliant modes of transport they choose! Finally, our GCSE Geographers spent Monday in Bowness-on-Windemere,
observing the land use as part of their Human Geography module. They even spent time on a boat on Lake Windemere and naturally were also able to experience the amazing views! We feel so lucky to have such beautiful places in close reach. As we are such a busy school, I am sure I will have many exciting tales to tell you about in my next report. Until then, keep an eye on our Twitter page @SaintAidansCEHS for any updates. Chloe Butler (01253) 810504

CAT SMITH MP Hello everyone. As you read this I hope the sun is shining down on you and that summer has finally arrived! I’m really pleased the 2C Sunday bus service between Knott End and Blackpool is now back – and up and running. This is a great time of the year to use it for leisure activities as well as for getting to the hospital. Myself and a team from Blackpool Transport launched the service a couple of weeks ago in Knott End village and it was fantastic to see and hear from so many people who were delighted by its return. If you don’t already know, the Sunday service allows you to travel in style on one of the latest Palladium buses with leather seats, wooden flooring and USB charging points on every seat – along with nifty little gizmos
that allow you to prop up your device for easy viewing. The first bus will leave Knott End at 9:30am and the last one will leave the village at 6:30pm. I’m also in discussions with Jane Cole and Shane Grindey from Blackpool Transport about introducing a Saturday evening service between Knott End and Blackpool – I’ll keep you updated! The most important message though is ‘Use It or Lose It’! Lancashire County Council no longer subsidises rural services. It’s therefore essential that residents use the bus services regularly to ensure the company can afford to run them. I was also told at the launch that the bus drivers love our route because it gets them away from the traffic and into the countryside so let’s support their enjoyment by getting onboard and enjoying the journey in luxury!

I was pleased to recently meet with one of the directors of the Wyre Tidal Barrage scheme – a clean energy project that would produce enough electricity to power 10,000 homes in Over Wyre and Fleetwood. With every day that passes it becomes more evident how little time we have left to develop innovative energy-producing technology that doesn’t cause further damage to our vulnerable planet. The barrage project centres around the construction of a tidal hydro energy plant on the River Wyre between Fleetwood and Knott End. It would produce the energy cleanly and safely from the movement of the tides utilising turbines and generators to convert this movement into electrical energy. Tidal energy is very different to other renewable energy schemes that utilise wind and solar in that it’s completely predictable, with tidal events occurring twice a day without fail. Turbines and sluice gates would maintain the natural tidal cycle within the estuary. One advantage to this is that as sea-levels continue to rise the ability to control tidal flow will provide essential flood defence management. Two navigation locks will allow for the return of ferries and other shipping if it were required. Other advantages include the possibility of providing access for blue light vehicles from Fleetwood to Knott End. I receive a significant number of complaints from Over Wyre residents highlighting cases where ambulances have taken more than an hour to get to a patient. Reducing this to just a few minutes would be a very positive move. The barrage would also contribute hugely to our local leisure and tourism for both sides of the estuary with sailing clubs benefitting from

Whilst I understand the concerns from those who aren’t in favour of this scheme I believe it’s now time to take the bold and visionary steps needed to protect everyone’s future.
I hope everyone has a fantastic day whether you’re lining the route or scaring yourself silly on the fairground rides – this is such an important social tradition for the area and Over Wyre and Fleetwood could be at long may it continue. Have a lovely month. the forefront of emerging technology that Cat Smith MP would change how we produce energy for generations - as well as regenerating and energising our area economically, bringing KNOTT END RAILWAY jobs and inward investment. Our thanks also go to the staff at The West Lancashire Railway for their invaluable I recently spent a Sunday afternoon and early help. evening visiting door to door in Scorton to hear local views from the village. The most raised issue was the speed of vehicles travelling through the village and the condition of the roads. We must be prepared to embrace change if we are committed to protecting our plant, our environment, the millions of species who rely on the balance of a fragile eco-system and indeed ensuring a healthy and positive future for our children and grandchildren.
BRIDGE LESSONS
I’ve raised this with Lancashire County Council and will be writing to the local residents who raised this with an update as soon as I can. I also heard that some would like to get a bus service back to the village and I am also looking into this. The ‘Friends of Knott End Library’ have been in touch with me to highlight some events they’re running over the coming month. There’s the opportunity to pop in to the Library for a brew, pick up a bargain in a book sale or peruse the craft fair. More information is available in the Library and on community notice boards. I am, as always, looking forward to the Knott End and Preesall Gala this year and desperately hoping for a dry day! Don’t forget

BEN WALLACE MP Looking out the window, the Lancashire weather does not know what to do at the moment but I do hope it picks up and we have a real summer. Westminster continues to dominate the news for many reasons but please be assured that I continue to represent the constituency of Wyre and Preston North with a loud voice both in London and here in Lancashire.
working with profoundly deaf people who use British Sign Language as their first or preferred language. Deafway has been working in Lancashire for 125 years.
I continue to look forward to my frequent constituency days where I travel around this large constituency visiting schools, charities, emergency services, local groups, businesses and local authorities. This is often how I find out about what really matters to constituents.
The Charity’s overall aim is to reach out to all services that might be used by a deaf person to create equal access for them in their everyday lives.
Recently, I visited Deafway, which is a charity
Recent research identified that deaf people did not have the same access to services in their everyday life that are enjoyed by hearing people. Worryingly it was the services which might affect the lives of deaf people most such as NHS services, the Police and legal services; and Social Services that generated the most criticism/complaint.
I enjoyed the visit and I would like to thank all involved for making me welcome. The Charity is based in Preston but serves people throughout the County and I look forward to

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) visiting again in the future. Recently local authorities throughout the country took part in the national ‘Fly a Flag’ campaign. This was to show support for our outstanding Armed Forces and the wider military community including families, veterans and cadets. Having served in the Army myself I am extremely proud of our Armed Forces. The flag raising is particularly relevant this year as we remember the sacrifice made 75 years ago during the D-Day landings. I believe it is extremely important to remember and to ensure future generations understand the sacrifices made by past generations. Highway related issues remain prominent in my mail bag. I am encouraged to see roads throughout the constituency improving, but there is more to do and with improvements come closures and disruption. Recently United Utilities undertook work on Mains Lane which should have been carried out off-peak with minimum disruption. Unfortunately it was carried out at peak-time and caused traffic in the surrounding area to come to a standstill.

STALMINE PARISH COUNCIL Planting Plan An eye-catching new planting feature beside the A588 at Stalmine is on the way after Parish Councillors voted to replace the cart display by Stricklands Lane that had rotted beyond repair. Councillors are keen to introduce a new feature to take the place of the cart, which has been disposed of by the Council’s Plantsman after many years on show. A replacement display will be identified, but in the meantime the Council hopes a raised bed with a re-cycling theme of pallets or packing crates can be installed for this season. Cash Donations Councillors have decided against buying a second Christmas tree for the village, but agreed to donate £100 to SSRA towards
materials for making Christmas lanterns and a children’s festive party. Wyre Juniors Football Club is to receive £50 as a contribution towards kit and footballs, while £100 is to go to the Seven Stars Charity Committee in respect of cancer care in Over Wyre. SSRA (cont) Miss Hannah Binns, Head Teacher of Stalmine School, attended the meeting and arrangements were made for the first subcommittee meeting. This will be in the Seven Stars’ meeting room on Wed 3rd July from 6:00pm - 7:00pm, before the monthly full SSRA committee meeting at 7:00pm. As you know, the SSRA hold many social events including our Easter Bonnet making competition, Treasure Hunt, Scarecrow event, Christmas Lantern making and parade and our Christmas Lights competition along with Stalmine Festival Week. We look forward to supporting the new subcommittee’s ideas and events. Some Stalmine residents have asked us to look into the possibility of a second Stalmine Christmas Tree. The Committee discussed this fully and are 100 per cent keen to continue supporting the established Stalmine Christmas tree switch-on. Our Lantern procession parades to the Church every year. However, it was also felt a second tree would be lovely and we will look into any restrictions, conditions and legalities. Hambleton, we believe, has or will have three trees this year and we are hoping they could assist us in our planning. We shall ask, via our Committee member, Cllr Andy Haydock, for a donation towards this from our Parish Council. They received a £500 donation for Stalmine from the Rally committee this year. Tell us what you think?

HAMBLETON COUNCIL (cont) of the public are always welcome and encouraged to attend. The Parish Council would like to thank Adam Jenkinson and Lynn Squires for all their hard work over the years and wish them well as they take a well-earned rest and stand down as Councillors. And welcome to our new Councillors Linda Wright and Andrew Graham who joined the Parish Council in June. Hambleton in Bloom Planting around the village is now well under way with the theme of ‘50 Years Since the Moon Landing’. Judging for Wyre In Bloom is to take place the first week in July. Please take some time to keep the area around your home tidy. Hambleton in Bloom are still looking for a small boat to be placed at Bank Farm corner along with the new Hambleton sign and rockery. If you have one available (or know someone that has one) please contact me. Help is needed in keeping the floral displays around the village watered and weeded. We are looking for groups or individuals (that we could include in a group) that would be prepared to take on responsibility for one of the planted areas and keep it looking at its best. Many hands make light work so any donation of time however small would be appreciated. Please contact me. Why not come along to the Hambleton in Bloom Fundraising Cruise - from Barton Grange on Sat 27th July 3:00pm - 5:00pm. Enjoy the view of the surrounding area from a different perspective. PREESALL TOWN COUNCIL VE celebrations Councillors are planning public events in Preesall next May to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day. The Town Council’s Civic Events Committee has been briefed with formulating ideas in honour of the occasion. The Government has already deemed that the early May bank holiday will be put back next year. Instead of Mon 4th May, the UK will enjoy a bank holiday on Fri 8th May, to ensure celebrations take place on the official anniversary. More details of events in Preesall and Knott End will be announced as the big day approaches. Signs Decision Signs denoting Preesall and Knott End’s
success in the In Bloom contest are to be placed at entrances to the township. A proposal for three ornamental metal signs similar to those on the boundaries of Hambleton was turned down as Preesall and Knott End already has ‘Welcome’ boundary signs in place. Floral Judging Judging for this year’s In Bloom entry is due to take place on Mon 1st July. Volunteer litter pickers willing to help tidy up before that date would be very welcome. Library Schedule A programme for Councillor Consultation sessions at the Library, where councillors hold advice sessions, is now in place for the rest of the calendar year. This will be available on social media, in the Library and on the Council’s website calendar. Next meeting Mon 8th July 7:00pm at the Youth and Community Centre on Lancaster Road. This is a public meeting and residents are welcome. An opportunity to raise matters is available.
