CRAFT & PRODUCE SHOW ‘In The Garden’ Lancs Federation of Women’s Institutes Wed 25th Sept 10:00am – 9:00pm Thurs 26th Sept 10:00am – 5:30pm Best Western Garstang Country Hotel Open to the public. Entry Fee £5.00. Under 15’s Free. In the 1960s the Lancashire Federation of Women’s Institutes (LFWI) held their annual Craft and Produce Shows in the Barton Village Hall. By the late 1970s the hall became too small to accommodate the influx of entries, so a new venue had to be found. The Best Western Garstang Country Hotel and Golf Club had suitable space and offered the use of the hotel for a week. Since then, for one week in September each year, the LFWI has taken over most of the hotel to the delight of their members and guests. In 2018 the ‘Out of Africa’ show had approximately 2,900 entries with over 2,500 visitors making it one the largest shows of its kind in the North West. This year looks as though it could be even bigger. 2019’s theme is ‘In The Garden’ with the usual crafts you would expect to see at a WI show; preserves, cakes, breads etc but there are some classes you may not expect. These include ‘Men Only Gingerbread’, ‘Garden Sculptures’, ‘Hand Decorated Faberge Style Blown Shell Egg’, ‘3D Origami Sculptures’ and ‘Ikebana Arrangements’. Children love to craft, so with this in mind there are four sections starting from 3 years of age through to young people. As there are 90 classes from 17 sections, the list is too long to mention here. The ‘ahhh’ and ‘ooh’ factor is a guarantee after seeing the hand crafted hedgehogs, garden birds/insects, rag dolls, the art section and, of course, the Faberge styled eggs. All entries are judged by NFWI trained judges with exception of one, the Betty Sanderson Memorial Trophy. In this class members of

Award-winning magician Brian Berry will be performing tricks and prestidigitation at an evening of old time magic at Garstang Arts Centre on Sat 28th Sept. The event is a family-oriented fundraiser in aid of the James Dodding Memorial Appeal and will help to fund the recently set-up appeal which is raising money for an annual prize in honour of the late Professor Dodding, who for decades was a drama tutor, broadcaster – and occasional magician. Brian Berry, from Leyland, is well known in magic circles for his ability to wow audiences with his sleight of hand skills. He is a winner of The Close-up Magic award made by The Order of the Magi. Brian has been performing tricks and illusions for more than 60 years. He was a long-time friend of James Dodding, who died last year. Professor Dodding had taught performance skills including acting, mime and voice skills at various institutions in the UK and overseas. Many of his students became stars of stage, screen and television. Tickets available at the Arts Centre and Market Place News, price £5 (nibbles included but bring your own bottle). MENOPAUSE Real women don’t have hot flushes they have power surges… Apparently the above is true, I read it on a fridge magnet! I saw the news earlier this week about how Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) medication is getting harder to find as the Department for Health described ‘ongoing supply issues’. With HRT being in the news this took me back to my osteopathic studies where we looked at how the pharmaceutical companies had used a tactic known as ‘astro turfing’ to promote the use of HRT. Astro turf is not real grass and, therefore, has no real roots and this is the case with the use of HRT for the menopause. Effectively the drugs companies have created a medical problem that is not a medical problem – the menopause. This is a time of
life when natural rhythms change the balance of a woman’s hormones. It is an entirely natural process. Of course that does not mean it is always a serene or easy process but it is not in any way a medical disease. There are numerous examples of big pharma using astro turfing to create a demand for something that has never been there before. It’s a cynical world. However, I thought I would touch upon a few natural remedies you may wish to try if you are going through a difficult menopause or have hormone issues in general. I’ve seen Evening Primrose Oil work wonders for lots of hormone imbalance problems and in my opinion most women, most of the time should take this herb regularly. It is not expensive and can be a great balancing supplement. Sage is also excellent, especially for hot flushes and can be taken as a tea, tincture or tablet. Bioforce make a very high quality product called Menoforce. Some people swear by Black Cohosh tablets and others by Maca which can be taken as a tablet or bought as a powder and added to food or drink. Viridian produce an excellent organic supplement called Herbal Female Complex with several superb herbal ingredients that have good research behind them for dramatically helping hot flushes, boosting libido and improving mood. They are also a very ethical manufacturer who will even give you money back when you return their bottle to the shop you got their product from. I have also had people report back that CBD oil has helped their symptoms too. The good thing with natural methods of balancing hormones is that they are very safe and do not come with the potentially serious side effects of HRT.

GARSTANG IN BLOOM
I would also add that avoiding processed foods and sugar is also useful for maintaining a good hormone balance. Blood sugar problems brought on by eating highly refined foods can mimic and exacerbate all manner of hormonal problems.
On Wed 7th Aug Garstang played host to two RHS Britain in Bloom judges. They visited the community gardens on Oak Rd, the Millennium Green, Garstang Marina, Kepple Lane Park and the various gardens and streets in the centre of the town.
It is also worth noting that there is not one magic bullet that works for everyone and I include HRT in that. So it is important to be patient and keep looking for the right answer for your body.
Despite a pessimistic forecast, the weather behaved itself and, sometimes, the sun even shone in the wet and windy August we’ve had so far.
Don’t forget that for most women the menopause passes with the minimum of fuss. If it is causing you trouble there are plenty of options and whilst it may not be pleasant at the time it is, of course, a self limiting phase of your life. I wish you all balance and hormonal harmony. Nick Tofalos (01995) 602833
It’s always hard to tell how we’ve performed in the competition as the judges never give anything away. However, Garstang looked great and we can feel happy knowing that we did our best to impress them. The Bloomers give a big Thank You to all the people involved in the areas named above plus those businesses and residences who made an effort to create a colourful display in the town centre, especially in Thomas’s Weind and the shops around the Market Cross, Bridge St and Church St. We’re also lucky to have pubs like the Royal Oak, Farmers Arms and the Wheatsheaf whose hanging baskets and planters never fail to impress. More of the same next year, please! It won’t be until the end of October that the results are announced, so in the meantime, we still carry on with the gardening, of course. We’re already making plans for next year. You’ll continue to see us out and about on Wednesday evenings so join us, please, if you have some time! Gill Bergman

It is also expected that free daffodil bulbs will be made available at the meeting for renewing members to plant so that the eventual blooms can be exhibited at the spring 2020 show. Well done Catterall residents and local businesses for helping and supporting the Bloom team as we greeted the RHS Britain in Bloom national judges on Sun 5th Aug. The village looked sparkling after the deluge the previous night and the sun shone for us as we toured Catterall. Front gardens looked great and the judges commented on the variety of planting throughout the village, especially the new raised bed and the Cart which were both buzzing with bees! The Bloom team worked hard for weeks preparing for this momentous day. Have you noticed the decorated bus shelters? Well done to everyone who helped with the painting. The results are wonderful and many people have commented on how uplifting it is to have flowers painted inside the bus shelters.

CATTERALL IN BLOOM (cont) BBC Radio Lancashire recorded an interview with the judges who said our watering system was the most sustainable they had seen this year. So well done Tim and Mr Wobbly! We await the results of the Britain in Bloom nationals, which are due on Fri 25th Oct in London. Fingers crossed for a good result and best of luck also to our friends Garstang in Bloom in the Small Town category. The only other nominations from the North West are Wilmslow (Large Town) and Oldham (City), so good luck to us all! Well done Team Catterall! Netta Parker (01995) 605385
CATTERALL GARDENING CLUB We would like to thank John Ball from the Lancashire Wildlife Trust for his talk entitled ‘The Plight of the Bumble Bee’ which gave an insight on how we can help endangered
insects in our gardens and green spaces. Have you noticed the new raised bed at the entrance to the village Hall car park? It has been full of bees all summer and hopefully they will hibernate in the Air Bee & Bee which Bernard Robinson kindly built for Catterall in Bloom. You may be interested in looking at the plant labels which are fixed to the side of the raised bed. Our final meeting of the year will be on Tues 17th Sept at 7:00pm at Catterall Village Hall when expert grower Andrew Richardson will talk to us about ‘Growing Dahlias for Exhibition’. Have your questions ready! We look forward to seeing you, dear gardening friends, to share a cup of tea and cake. £3 entry. Raffle and Plant stall. FRIENDS OF GARSTANG LIBRARY
GARSTANG FAIRTRADE
At our August meeting we learned more about the regular events and get togethers that happen at the Library. I had the Home Library Service explained to me - sounds fantastic for someone who is housebound.
Garstang has been successful in renewing its Fairtrade Status. This is what the Fairtrade Foundation had to say:
On Fri 6th Sept between 2:00pm and 4:00pm there is an opportunity to have a go at finishing off a piece of craft you started and share your passion with like minded folk. One of the Friends will be on hand to offer help over a cup of tea. On Sat 5th Oct from 10:00am to 4:00pm it is the Fun Palace. Garstang Library is involved in this national event. Anyone wanting to showcase their skill or passion can take part. Contact the Library. Our next meeting is on Tues 3rd Sept 11:00am to 12 noon. We invite you to get involved. Pat Ascroft - (01995) 604319
‘It’s been fantastic to hear about everything that you have achieved in the past few years. Your team has been very busy, and we appreciate the hard work you have put in. Your group has demonstrated dedication to take your campaign forward and ensure Fairtrade becomes part of daily life in Garstang. This is evident by the fact that different community organisations volunteered to promote Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight. Well done also on the reach of your events and for managing to engage successfully with a great number of people. It is great to hear that you have collaborated with different community groups. It is also great to see that you have built such a

GARSTANG MEDICAL PRACTICE Wyre & Fylde Rural Extended Network On 1st July Garstang Medical Practice officially became part of the Wyre & Fylde Rural Extended Network (WREN). This is a new collaboration between the five practices in Kirkham, Great Eccleston, Preesall and Garstang. The network is part of the new NHS Long Term Plan and aims to develop over the next few years. The initial stages will focus on building strong working relationships with the other practices to collaborate on improving services and access. As the network matures we have been asked to develop a better understanding of our shared population. This will allow us to work with our local community health services to improve quality of care to our patients. This will continue to support and extend the
WREN Integrated Care Team that is led by our lead nurse Helen Kerrigan-Hawkes. Within this we have also been asked to work closely with the local authorities and voluntary agencies to improve the health and care of the whole population. Through the ICT we already have good relationships with the agencies and will look to build and strengthen these. Dr John Miles has been chosen as the Clinical Director for the network and as such has responsibility to work for all of the practices towards these aims and objectives. We will also be sharing learning with the other local networks across the Fylde Coast and working with the wider health economy to ensure that we meet these aims and objectives. Flu Clinics NHS vaccines are available for patients who

GARSTANG MILLENNIUM GREEN ‘Catterall – A Northern Powerhouse’ John Waite (Speaker) Wed 2nd Oct 7:30pm Garstang United Reformed Church Hall Garstang Millennium Green Trust are pleased to welcome you to a talk given by John Waite, on a subject he is very knowledgeable about; ‘Catterall – A Northern Powerhouse’.
Green (Registered Charity No 1079032). We are a small charity that owns and manages the 3.5ha of public open space alongside the River Wyre that comprises Garstang Millennium Green. We are run and managed entirely by volunteers and receive no financial assistance from the Local Authority. All the work on the Green is carried out by dedicated volunteers who give up a lot of their free time to maintain this area for you to enjoy. Please support us and come and enjoy an informative evening.
Did you know that back in the 1800’s Catterall had a larger population than Garstang? This was due to the employment in the mills. I didn’t know this either. John will tell us about Catterall’s early history and explain how the village became an important industrial centre in the North West from the 18th Century onwards.

COFFEE STOP
Ron Coombes Exhibition is still running at the Garstang Arts Centre and will do so until Sat 21st Sept when all unsold paintings should be collected. (So still time to buy an original work of art!)
Coffee Stop opens as a Community Cafe on most Tuesday mornings.
September starts with a members’ only demonstration by Thuline de Cock entitled ‘Blackbird’ in acrylics and pastels. This will prove very interesting as these two mediums are rarely seen together, and so a first for the Painting Group which could start yet another trend amongst our very adventurous members! We are looking forward to that!
Our aim is to provide a safe and friendly place for us to get together and make new connections. If you’re new to the area or if you’ve previously considered coming along it would be great to welcome you.
Our interesting programme continues into the final months of 2019 every Wednesday afternoon from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.
Volunteers from Inglewhite Church and the local communities are there to serve tea and coffee as well as cake or a toasted tea cake.
We open at 10:00am and close around noon. Why not call in for any part of the morning that suits you? Free parking, cycle space and disabled access are available at both venues. We look forward to welcoming you to our new September term as per the dates below.

CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG (CRY) Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund This summer has seen high energy events mixed with times of peaceful reflection for those involved in Matt’s fund. ‘Owd Nells Cider Festival and the new Churchtown Beer and Cider Festival have featured alongside craft events, clothing collections and Alison’s trek to Machu Picchu, all helping raise awareness of the risks of undiagnosed heart conditions. The thirty pebbles (the travels of which are much followed on Facebook #MattHezRocks) placed to mark what should have been Matt’s 30th birthday in April, continue to pop up in places he visited and have taken his name to others he never saw, with some travelling throughout the UK and even abroad. CAT SMITH MP Hi everyone. As I write this in August it’s yet another soggy autumnal-like day and if ever the planet was trying to tell us something about climate change it would be forcing us to put the heating on during what should be one of the hottest months of the year! I’m delighted to reveal that the I’ve now negotiated an extension to the Saturday evening 2C bus service into November – and you won’t need to pre-book! Customers will be able to travel from Knott End to Poulton in the usual way using any concessionary or saver ticket they might have. It also means the later buses will run from Blackpool, giving the opportunity for even

more customers to use the bus. There will also be subsequent later departures from Knott End. The timetable is now available on Blackpool Transport’s website and their very useful app. I know this will be particularly welcome in the run up to Christmas but we are still in a trial period so remember ‘Use it or lose it!’ So far the extension is scheduled until November so if we want to be be able to enjoy public transport over the festive period we need to make the most of it now. Blackpool Transport will continue to monitor customer usage and as long as they break even they’re happy to carry on providing this service through their commitment to supporting our rural areas. I continue to be very grateful to the Managing Director Jane Cole and her fantastic team.

CAT SMITH MP (cont) Customer numbers for the 2C Sunday service have been down during August – this may be because people are away or the weather has been rubbish. I know I’m repeating myself but if we want the service to continue we need to use it! I’ve had lots of concerned residents contacting me about the ongoing problems of getting their prescriptions from Lloyds Pharmacy in Knott End. I contacted NHS England and within their reply they state: ‘First and foremost, it is worth clarifying, that while there is no specific contract with pharmacy providers, providers are governed by the requirements of the Pharmaceutical Services Regulations 2015. Those Regulations include Terms of Service for Pharmacies which cover operating standards. ‘NHS England carries out a Community

In addition, the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) also monitor pharmacies with specific remit to premises, operating procedures and professional conduct.’ If you feel you’re not getting the service you have been led to expect or you feel customer service has been poor then please contact myself or NHS England to draw their attention to these problems. In addition NHS England says the pharmacy does not experience large numbers of patients waiting and has advised that their longest waiting time would normally be around 10 minutes. In a few weeks’ time I’m meeting with farmers in the constituency, many of whom are very concerned about the impact of a no-deal Brexit.
If you are a member of the farming community and you’re concerned, then please get in touch with me. I hold regular advice surgeries where you can discuss any issue you’d like support with. You can email me at Cat.Smith. MP@parliament.uk or please call my office on (01253) 490440. I can’t believe how quickly this summer has flown. We might also be preparing for another General Election. So much to look forward to! Cat Smith MP

BEN WALLACE MP I would like to inform you how pleased I am to have been appointed Secretary of State for Defence by the Prime Minister. The defence of our great nation is a great responsibility. Having served in the Armed Forces myself I hope I will bring relevant experience to the role and it is a challenge I look forward to greatly. I would also like to thank the many residents who have congratulated me on my new
position, the messages of good wishes have been truly humbling. Please be assured my new position will not affect my work within the constituency and I remain fully committed to this constituency and helping my constituents. I hope you have all had a good summer break and let’s hope some of the summer weather we may have missed out on continues well into September. I have said many times that the most enjoyable part of my role as the parliamentary representative is traveling around the constituency meeting people. This has continued throughout the summer and I have also recently met with the Leader of Lancashire County Council and the County Cabinet member for Highways to discuss LCC matters and of course, highways issues were high on the agenda. I would like to congratulate the Churchtown Flood Action Group on officially opening their flood defences. The Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire, Lord Shuttleworth, opened the defences which will give villagers added protection against the risk of flooding. All involved must be commended in the way they worked together to protect their village. As the summer comes to an end it is also a great opportunity to thank all those involved with local events which took place over the last few months and which help make this area special. From volunteers of Britain in Bloom who give their own time to ensure our towns and villages look fantastic, to the organisers of the many summer galas, fetes and shows which take place. It is clear to see why Wyre is a special place. I have no doubt that politically things will be even busier in the coming weeks and I will continue to listen to constituents views and ensure they are heard, always representing you robustly. I continue to meet residents at my advice surgeries to discuss a wide range of issues. Please remember if you would like to attend

Kathy and Jackie took to their bikes to complete the sponsored ride from Grange over Sands through Morecambe and Lancaster and finally back to Garstang. The route was planned to visit other clubs in our Soroptimists region and a warm welcome was given by our fellow Soroptimists to the intrepid pair. We’re waiting for some sponsorship to come in yet but will let you know next month how much was raised and how much more of a Tuk Tuk we now have. To find out more about the project we are supporting visit www.rosie-may.com/worksri-lanka/. We also sacrificed a pleasant Sunday afternoon for tea at the home of one of our members. Gordon started to learn the guitar at the age of twelve. Never receiving any formal tuition on the instrument, he gradually developed his own style and technique. His musical career took off in the 1960s, when he played on the folk scene in London alongside contemporaries such as Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and Mike Oldfield. GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS Donations Our Club President has just completed another gruelling ‘coast to coast’ cycle ride to raise funds for Brian House Children’s Hospice and members agreed to a further sponsorship of £100 for this worthy cause. The Lions Club will be organising another delivery to Fylde Women’s Aid who have a continued need for new clothing items (babies, small children or ladies), new toys, new cosmetic or new toiletries. This appeal is ongoing with our collection point being the Resources Centre (old Liberal Club on Bridge Street). With Christmas on the horizon now it would be great to have a full delivery next time.
Events & Activities Club members worked extremely hard on what proved to be both a busy and gruelling day to park cars or other vehicles of the many visitors and exhibitors at the Garstang Show. Our thanks go to all involved as this was a very demanding event. The final activity involving the organisation of car parking by the Lions Club will be the Lancashire Game and Country Fair to be held on the Sat 7th & Sun 8th Sept. The Lions continue to support the activities of the local Memory Café which is organised by Lion Sandra Perkins and meets on both the first Wednesday of the month (10:00am -12:00 noon) and also the third Monday (2:00pm - 4:00pm) at Garstang Library. This is a lively social group with a range of fun activities being provided free for those suffering from dementia and their carers, family members and partners. The September dates for these sessions are the Wed 4th Sept & Mon 16th Sept. Our club continues to expand with one new member being inducted in August and another one due to happen in October. Any new members are invited to attend three meetings before making their decision to join us. If you want to add your name to the growing membership of our club then you would be very welcome. Further information is available on our web site at www.garstanglions.co.uk or you can just speak to any member about what we do or come along to our meetings held on the third Tuesday of the month in the Royal Oak at 8:00pm. For some reason, probably superstition, we British seem to like having festivals in the midwinter. It was so cold while playing carols in the street for the Victorian Evenings in 2017 that some of our tenor ukes shrunk to sopranos.
We meet on Wednesday mornings from 10:00am to 12 noon. If you enjoy knitting, crochet, embroidery, patchwork, applique or would like to learn, do come and join this friendly, helpful group.
Meanwhile in Hawaii, the home of ukulele, people are playing in warm sunshine all year long. Somehow we had it wrong. Why should we go outside to play in the winter? Why not in the summer? That’s why we formed a second ukulele group called Traffic Jam. Made up of the finest ukulele players Garstang has to offer, Traffic Jam is dedicated to playing in warm weather. There will be no finger-less gloves, woolly hats and big coats for us! Not even a music stand for shelter, just sandals and sunshine. So if you fancy playing the ukulele as Mother Nature intended, in the warm glow of sunshine, visit our website and get in touch. Bob Sapey www.garstangukulelegroup.co.uk Bridge Group This month the bridge group will meet every Monday at 7:00pm and Tues 3rd, 10th, & 24th at 1:30pm.
