GARSTANG KNIT AND NATTER Autumn is coming, and our thoughts have turned to knitting and all things woolly, and keeping cosy over the winter. We are continuing with our poppy making for the big Poppy Project in Garstang this November and more poppies have been knitted and crocheted. We are still knitting for premature babies and will soon be starting our Christmas knitting

for Brian House Children’s Hospice as we did last year. More about that soon. One of our members has been knitting a fair isle hat from a pattern that is for sale to help a charity in Shetland buy an MRI scanner for the island hospital. If you live on Shetland and need an MRI scan you have to travel to the mainland for it, either by flying or on the overnight boat, with costs being met by the NHS. As you can imagine this costs NHS in Shetland an awful lot of money, so a scanner on the islands would really save money. If any knitters out there would like a copy of the pattern and to contribute to a great cause, the information can be found at the website www.mrimaakers.com. You can also find a link to the project and a picture of the hat (which is lovely!) on our Facebook page Garstang Knit and Natter. Mary Randles

GARSTANG HARMONY & HEALTH Wed 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd & 30th Oct 10:00am - 11:30am United Reformed Church Hall Harmony & Health meets every Wednesday morning to sing numbers from the musicals and the pop songs of our younger days as well as more recent hits. This month we are singing at the ‘Fun Palaces’ event in Garstang Library on Sat 5th Oct from 2:00pm - 3:00pm. Age is no barrier and there is no requirement to be able to read music or even sing in tune. We simply invite you to join us for some fun and laughter with friends old and new. There is no charge for these sessions but we do offer a cup of tea or coffee for a small charge. Singing is good for your health, so why not give it a go! Ann Cameron - ann.cameron@mac.com

GARSTANG AFVBC Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Club Sat 5th Oct 9:30am - 11:30am Th’owd Tithebarn The Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Clubs are groups of all Arms of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces and her Allies, serving and veterans, who meet to break bread together in a safe, social, informal environment. The clubs are free, no subscriptions or fees. Buy your own breakfast, meet old comrades and new friends and indulge in some good old military banter. No one knows what is best for Armed Forces Veterans better than the Veterans themselves! Everyone talks about service personnel ‘returning’ to civilian life: for the majority this is a misnomer: they are entering civilian life for the first time. The vast majority of new leavers have only ever been to school, or in the Armed Forces. They have no experience of being an adult civilian.

For many, they begin their civilian life at the same level as a school leaver, when it comes to finding their feet in society. It is an alien world with a whole new code of ethics, especially with their military ‘conditioning’ often during late adolescence, and during their entire military career. No wonder they often find it difficult to fit in. No wonder they sometimes find it hard to relate to those around them. No wonder so many feel isolated. We recognise this in the Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Clubs. Veterans themselves have been starting these clubs all over the UK and abroad, which gives them a renewed feeling of belonging, which even older veterans feel when they attend. Many lost this when they left their respective services and those attending AFVBC’s are stronger together because they ‘return to the tribe’! The Breakfast Clubs have proliferated organically at an astonishing rate and spread into Europe and further. The uptake has been phenomenal, both here and overseas (Germany, France, Spain, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Australia, New Zealand and more), with an average of more than one a week starting since then. We have seen first-hand the huge positive impact the Breakfast Clubs are having on the lives of so many veterans and their families. It is truly staggering, and it has driven us to work very hard on them since this began. The mutual support they afford, and the connections they are making, even outside of the clubs is incredible. Our Breakfast Club will meet the first Saturday of each month at Th’owd Tithebarn, from 9:30am - 11:30am. Parking is available but please enter your registration number at the bar as soon as you enter. Roger Dunn (01995) 603878 Garstangafvbc@gmail.com www.afvbc.NET

CALPOL AND KIDS Here at Tofalos Towers we have the delight of a nine month old daughter to keep us entertained and challenged in equal measure. We also have family and friends with young children charging around to add to the mix.

when a parent picks their child up from a grandparent and they are both giving the child Calpol. Unwittingly they may both have given Calpol at different times but ended up with too much in one day.

What I have found interesting is observing the seemingly all pervading use of Calpol for just about any issue involving children. Teething? Use Calpol. Not sleeping? Use Calpol. Crying a bit too much? Use Calpol. A raised temperature? Use Calpol.

Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory drug that can damage the stomach lining and cause internal bleeding. Studies show that for every 1000 users of ibuprofen three have heart attacks and one is fatal. Do you really want to give this to your child?

For those not familiar with Calpol it is an over the counter medication that is basically paracetamol for children. There is also a newer version that has ibuprofen in it too.

It seems the one symptom in children that people are most concerned about is that of a fever. Calpol is used as an antipyretic – in other words it can lower a temperature when a child has a fever. Most concern extends to when a fever rises above 40 degrees C where both lay people and medics fear the trauma of a febrile convulsion. Therefore, I thought I would check the science behind this.

Paracetamol can cause liver and kidney damage but is commonly used as an antipyretic (ie, reduce a fever). It is very easy to overdose on and there are concerns that this can easily happen in the crossover time

Firstly, we know that a fever is a protective reaction of the body to help recovery. A raised temperature can destroy that which is making you ill without harming you. Secondly, there is no evidence that a temperature above 40 increases a child’s chance of a febrile convulsion. There are other factors that are more important such as pre-existing medical conditions or a family history. Thirdly, in most children, most of the time, who have a febrile convulsion there is no long term harm caused. Of course that does not mean we advocate watching it happen and doing nothing. The latest scientific advice is that you should only use Calpol for fever if your child exhibits the following:

12

Pain, excessive lethargy, discomfort and delirium. This is mainly to reduce parental anxiety than for any major therapeutic benefit.

If the child has been burnt or has heart or lung problems.

Why not keep it local and support our advertisers?

13

CALPOL AND KIDS (cont)

GARSTANG MEDICAL

Therefore, if your child does not exhibit any of the above you should not give them Calpol. The research acknowledges that this may cause parents considerable anxiety because they are doing nothing but it also says that most children with a temperature do not show any of the above symptoms or problems.

New GP

A case in point is my daughter who has had two high temperatures, we think related to teething. She was still her usual happy self but was hot. We did not use Calpol and just ensured we took layers off her so she could stay cool. Within 12 hours her temperature was back to normal. Our body is remarkably capable of fixing itself, at any age, with the right conditions and care. Please think twice about handing out such potent medication to your children/ grandchildren and do so with good reasoning. Nick Tofalos (01995) 602833

We are delighted to welcome Dr Emma Tinline who joined our team recently. Emma has previously worked with us for eight months last year as part of her early GP training. Emma studied locally at Cardinal Newman College and then at the University of Liverpool. She got married to David in March this year and joins us following the successful completion of her GP training in Preston. We are very fortunate that she has chosen to come back to work with us on a full time basis. Following the excitement of our ‘Ron Coombes Exhibition’ last month, we embark on our mid-Autumn session with a Still Life Workshop on Wed 9th Oct entitled ‘Explosion of Colour’. The imagination boggles as we look forward to this break from the more sober Autumn palettes.

In addition, people can get expert face-toface advice from local stop smoking services. Those who use stop smoking aids and who get face-to-face support from their local stop smoking service are up to four times more likely to quit successfully. GARSTANG FAIRTRADE The Fairtrade Mark is celebrating its 25th Anniversary in October. We are looking to have photos taken around town with our Fairtrade supporters. Arrangements are being made to celebrate our 20th anniversary as a Fairtrade Town next year so if you have any ideas or thoughts please let us know. The results of our Fairtrade survey, which took place over the summer, took the form of a number of questions asked by members of the Fairtrade Steering Group to shoppers spoken to at random. Of the 114 interviewed, 61% were visitors, 39% residents, 64% were Female, and 36% Male. Awareness of the range of Fairtrade products available in Garstang and elsewhere has greatly increased since the last survey conducted in 2018. Actual purchases of Fairtrade products have increased, with

52% of shoppers buying Fairtrade products regularly, 35% occasionally. Knowledge of the meaning of the Fairtrade logo, that the producers are guaranteed a fair price for the product, has improved to a record 90% of shoppers. The Steering Group would like to thank those members of the public involved in responding to the survey. The survey will be published in full on our Facebook page so please take a look. Our next group meeting will be on Sat 26th Oct at 10:00am in Wesley’s Coffee Lounge on Parkhill Road. Anyone who has an interest in Fairtrade or is just curious is welcome to join us, we would love to see you. CATTERALL IN BLOOM The Autumn leaves are tumbling down but we are not despondent! The Catterall in Bloom work continues through the seasons and you will notice us in our yellow jackets, refreshing the large planters by replacing the soil and planting them up with Spring bulbs.

The tulips were fantastic earlier this year and our experiment with keeping the large planters in situ seems to be have been a popular idea with the community. Thank you everyone for your words of encouragement in 2019. The RHS results will be announced soon but no matter what they award us, I’m sure you will agree that the village is looking lovely. We are thrilled with the great response to the painted bus shelters. It has cheered us all up! We have new ideas for the winter so keep your eyes peeled for surprises during the dark months ahead. We love what we do and enjoy working together as a team - why not join us? Look out for the Crazy Daisies of Catterall! Netta Parker and the Bloom team

GARSTANG IN BLOOM October is the time for looking back on what we have achieved over the past year but also for planning for next year. The ’looking back’ part involves a review of our planting and colour schemes and deciding what was successful and how we can improve next time around. We also hear how Garstang performed in the Small Town category of the national Britain in Bloom competition. Four of the team are travelling to the RHS Lindley Hall in central London to attend the awards ceremony on Fri 25th Oct. The results of the North West in Bloom competition are announced a week later in Southport. Watch this space! Looking ahead, we now prepare the beds and borders to face the winter months by cutting back some of the shrubs and perennials and removing our annual displays. It is also the season for planting bulbs and we have already planted over 150 daffodil bulbs into the new garden in memory of Norah Hoyles. Plants that attract pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, are always important to

GARSTANG IN BLOOM (cont) us so we are planning to have two small areas of wildflowers in the centre of town. These will be prepared and sown in the autumn ready, we hope, for a good display from spring onwards.

The business of the AGM was swiftly concluded, accompanied by a sparkling wine obtained locally from a well known German Supermarket chain.

If you like the sound of what we do and would like to be part of the Bloom team, please join us on Wednesday mornings, weather permitting, 9:30am to 11:00am. You can’t miss us with our hi-vis vests and trowels in hand! No gardening experience is required.

The circle had a very successful year during 2018 to 2019 and we hope that 2019 to 2020 will continue in the same vein.

GARSTANG WINE CIRCLE The new season of meetings started in September at the Arts Centre with the AGM, followed by a presentation by committee members of a selection of wines that they found to be particularly interesting. New members of the circle attended the meeting. We extend a welcome to them and hope that they will enjoy their membership.

The committee for the next year will remain the same, with the notable exception of Guy and Linda Pugh. They have decided to take a well earned rest after 15 years hard work contributing to the success of the Circle, and their loss will be a hard act to follow. We would like to thank them for their past endeavours, and accordingly a presentation to them was made by Chairman Alan Jefferson. A collection of wines was presented to the group by committee members Steve Holt, Glynis Jefferson, Rosemary Stokes, Anne Whitehead and Alan Jefferson (on behalf of Richard Harrison).

PAT SAYS THANK YOU

The selection consisted of whites from France (Alsace) and Spain, and reds from New Zealand, Italy and France (Rhone). A varied selection, notable in that only one wine from what is termed the ‘New World’ was included in the selection (New Zealand). Is that a reflection of the tastes of committee members?

I was honoured and humbled to be awarded the British Empire Medal in our Queen’s Birthday Honours.

A wonderful selection of food to the group was presented by Jackie Hastings and Glynis Jefferson. This was an excellent evening to start our new season and a good forerunner of the delights to come over the next year. The next meeting will be at 7:30pm in the Arts Centre on Mon 21st Oct when we will have a visit from Stuart Rothwell who runs ‘The Vineyard’ wine shop in Ramsbottom. Details of this meeting can be obtained from the chairman Alan Jefferson (01995) 601842. Mervyn Stokes

Many people in Garstang and Over Wyre have supported me in my endeavours to raise money for Mencap over the last 25 years. Groups and individuals have been generous and the congratulations received since have been overwhelming and I thank you. The medal ceremony is in Lancaster Castle followed by a visit to Buckingham Palace (I’ve already got the hat!) As the citation reads ‘For service to fundraising and the community of Garstang, Lancashire, I am hosting a coffee morning in the URC Church Hall in Garstang on Thurs 17th Oct from 10:00am - 12 noon to express thanks. GARSTANG ARTS CENTRE October Art Exhibition A member of the Arts Centre Painting Group, Evan Gray, has always had a pencil or paintbrush in his hand. Art has always been of interest to him, especially watercolour, but as he now feels he is reaching the status of ‘ancient of days’ he finds himself moving from what would normally be expected to be produced by a water-colourist to cartoons. Evan’s wonderful collection of topical and humorous cartoons will bring a smile and at only £10 each will be easy on the pocket too. The exhibition opened on Tues 24th Sept and runs to Thurs 17th Oct. now this was considered a rare event in Lancashire with the Millennium Green bodies being unique north of Chester. However, in the past six months secret excavations have been taking place off Woods Lane, near Woodlands Country Park, where four more bodies and a hoard of musical instruments have been found. These remains are thought to be about a century later than the Cherestanc lovers, clear into the Hanoverian era. Dr Jan Somersby, emeritus professor of cider studies at the Carlsberg University of Catterall has described the find as evidence of a continuing purge of real music by a secret society of nocturnal harpsichord players. Discontent at not being able to play outside in the sunshine, they would roam the country at night seeking to destroy the instruments of anyone who played music in daylight. Dr Somersby believes that when they were

GARSTANG HISTORICAL SOCIETY Garstang United Reformed Church Wed 9th Oct 7:30pm Historian and genealogical sleuth, Bill McCartney is to tell the tale of his discovery of 18th century joiner Thomas Noblet’s notebook to members of Garstang Historical Society this month. The jottings and drawings in his ancestor’s notebook prompted an interest in the history of woodworking, cabinet and furniture making in the Fylde area 250 years ago. Bill went on to transcribe and reproduce Thomas Noblet’s workbook (along with opposite page facing transcriptions and notes) as an unusual paperback. It shows Thomas’s sketches from his various commissions including clock casings, clothes chests, chests of drawers, doors, spice boxes, church pews, tables, cradles, bannisters, chairs and squabs (settees). Details of measurements, costings, expenses, itemised listings of timber, financial borrowings and mathematical calculations in the book all show Thomas’s eye for detail, how a local craftsman operated all those years ago, as well as details of the Noblet family and their relations, the Jolly family, over several centuries.

All are welcome. Members free; visitors £3 (including post lecture refreshments). More information from Peter Burrell (01995) 601054. Anthony Coppin

CAT SMITH MP I’ve recently been in discussions with the Citizen’s Advice Bureau (CAB) looking at whether its possible for them to provide some advice surgeries in Knott End. It’s important to me that people who live in rural parts of the constituency have the same access to services as those who live in the towns and cities. There’s also a great deal of research which suggests there are hidden problems in rural areas, like Knott End, Preesall and Pilling, where families often struggle on low incomes to pay their rent, bills and put food on the table – and yet food banks and support services are often difficult to access without access to a car.

CAB is currently looking for a suitable venue in Knott End and I’ll be helping them to publicise their service once arrangements have been made. If you are having problems with Universal Credit or any other issues, please email me on Cat.Smith.MP@parliament.uk or call my office (01253) 490440. This week I met with the Directors of Kirby Lonsdale Coaches who provide the 89 bus service between Knott End and Lancaster. It’s probably one of the most scenic bus journeys through the constituency, taking in Cockerham and Glasson Dock. It would be great if there was a later service back from Lancaster to Knott End so that more people could enjoy the nightlife, restaurants, bars and theatres of Lancaster – but the bus company can only provide this service if it’s used. I’d be interested in your views. Would this

CAT SMITH MP (cont) be a service you would welcome and use regularly on a Saturday evening in the same way Blackpool Transport has introduced the Saturday evening service to Poulton and Blackpool? Again, please email me your thoughts Cat.Smith.MP@parliament.uk Staying with the transport theme – and I’m looking forward to holding a unique event on the 89 bus when I introduce my bus surgery! Normally I hold ‘Chats with Cat’ or advice surgeries in libraries and village halls but instead I’ll be holding a surgery on the 89 bus from Lancaster to Knott End. I’ll let you know the date when arrangements have been finalised! You can pop on the bus and have a natter with me about any issue that concerns or interests you or that you want to highlight. Or you may just fancy helping me scoff some wine gums and enjoy the views! I was sorry to hear about another serious accident on the junction with Burned House Lane. I’ve this week chased up the Highways Department at Lancashire County Council who I’d contacted when the last collision occurred. I’d like to know what ideas they have for making the junction safer as well as a clear idea of when these measures will be implemented before anyone else is hurt. Earlier this year, the BBC announced that free TV licences for over 75s will come to an end in June 2020. This will result in up to 3.7 million older people losing their free TV licence. Unfortunately, in 2015 – as part of the BBC’s Charter renewal – the cost of these licences was shifted to the BBC from 2020. Therefore, from 1st June 2020, there will be a new scheme, where anyone aged 75 or over who receives Pension Credit, will still be eligible for a free licence which the BBC will pay for. Households where there is no one

CAT SMITH MP (cont) aged 75 or over that receives Pension Credit, will need to buy a TV licence if one is needed. I would therefore urge you to check your entitlement to Pension Credit by: 1. Checking online to see if you qualify on the following web address www.gov.uk/ pension-credit/eligibility 2. Calling the Pension Service helpline on 08007 310 469. 3. Contacting my office on (01253) 490440 or by emailing cat.smith.mp@ parliament.uk Unfortunately, if you do not receive Pension Credit and don’t qualify for the benefit, you will have to pay for your TV licence from 1st June 2020. You will, however, stay licensed for free until 31st May 2020. TV Licensing will write to you before the new scheme comes into force to explain how you can pay for your next TV licence. I can assure you I will be pressing the Government to overturn this decision and to honour its commitment to protect free TV licences for the over-75s. I’m always keen to hear from you and if there’s anything I can help you with then please do get in touch. Cat Smith MP

ROTARY ‘Wrap Up Lancashire’ Nine years ago the charity Hands On London introduced the initiative ‘Wrap Up London’. The objective was to collect unwanted coats for men, women and children and to recycle them to the homeless, vulnerable and needy. ‘Wrap Up London’ now operates throughout the capital at the start of every winter. Over the nine year period more than 140,000 coats of many styles or colour for men, women and children have been rescued and put to direct use by really needy people. In 2018 and in partnership with Hands On London, the Rotary Clubs in Blackburn, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley launched a new initiative ‘Wrap Up Lancashire’. Collection points and sorting centres operated across East Lancashire and remained open until the first week of November for the collection of surplus coats from the public. All donations were sorted and delivered to the nominated charity partners during the first two weeks of November, for distribution to those in need, just in time for winter. A total of 1,790 coats were recycled through the charities to the vulnerable and needy men, women and children. The Rotary Clubs in Blackburn, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley have re-launched the initiative for 2019. The Rotary Clubs in Preston and District are to join this initiative immediately. Known as the Preston Cluster of Clubs it consists of Preston Amounderness, Preston South, Garstang & Over Wyre, Preston Guild, Leyland, Longridge & North Preston, Chorley Astley, Preston and South Ribble. The Preston Cluster is currently setting up a series of collection points which will be open from Mon 7th Oct until Mon 8th Nov for donations of coats from the public. In Garstang there will be collection points in Booths and Sainsbury’s. The collection points will be cleared regularly

SOROPTIMISTS (cont) member just how special they are. A Sad Farewell We took a tour down Memory Lane for our social meeting in September. Sadly, Pat Manley, one of our long-standing members of over 40 years, passed away last month. She was a special person, not only to our group but to others in our region as well. Always there to support, always involved in whatever project we were doing at the time, a fantastic treasurer and a true friend. As a result, a large cargo of Soroptimist documentation containing many photographs was delivered to us and we took this opportunity to toast Pat with tea and cake and to remember all the good times. A great time was had identifying and documenting these and adding them to our scrapbooks. Looking Ahead The time is moving quickly to our next conference which will take place in Bournemouth. This is our annual big meet-up with members from all across our Federation to review the work we do, plan for the future, network and generally have a good dose of fun and friendship!

HEALTH BENEFITS OF GOLF At a time when NHS services are being stretched to the limit and an ageing population looks set to bring even greater demand, health practitioners are promoting exercise as a positive way to a healthier lifestyle.

through regular contact with other people.

In support of this message, Sport is looking at how they can play their part in helping us live longer, healthier lives.

Don’t worry if you have never picked up a golf club before. Many clubs provide starter programmes which cater for all ages. There are plenty of golfers who take up the game on retirement and quickly become regular mainstream players. Golf Clubs will often lend you golf clubs to help you get started.

One sport that is seeing a rise in members is Golf - its health benefits are well proven. Did you know the age range of some clubs is from young juniors to seniors who are still playing in their 90’s? No longer the exclusive sport of a few; research has shown golf has many health benefits. For less than a price of a coffee a day the benefits are a healthier heart, lowered blood pressure, reduced stress, increased physical flexibility and very importantly - it keeps us both physically and mentally active

Just type ‘golf and health’ into your internet browser and the benefits of golf for a healthier and longer life are plain to see.

In the Fylde/Wyre/Garstang district we are lucky to have numerous excellent golf clubs. All would welcome you - just give them a ring or simply visit - they will be pleased to see you. Go on, try it - it could change your life. David Forrester 01253 810576

CLUB TOGETHER IMPROVE HEALTH Groups, clubs and societies across the Fylde Coast are being called upon to help encourage residents to improve their health and wellbeing. If you run a keep fit or knitting class, a football or any kind of club, then Fylde Coast health and wellbeing organisations want to hear from you. The call comes as planning gets underway for the national Self Care Week which runs from 18th - 24th November. Locally, Blackpool Council, Fylde Council, Wyre Council, health services and a range of voluntary and community groups are working together to make Self Care Week a celebration of all the groups on the Fylde Coast. Dr Adam Janjua, Acting Chair of Fylde and Wyre Clinical Commissioning Group and local GP said: “Last year many of the groups that promote themselves on the FYi directory website offered taster sessions for people. This year we want to involve even more groups.

on what we did last year which saw more than 70 events taking place over the week and hundreds of people taking part. “Groups reported that they had new members who were all giving it a go which is a fantastic result. It means that people were embracing self-care and were all making a big step to improving their health and wellbeing. This year, amongst other plans, we want to double that impact.” If you run a club or group, charity or service that helps people and would like to take part in Self Care Week 2019 all you have to do is think of what your offer will be and let organisers know by emailing comms. fyldecoast@nhs.net or calling (01253) 951349. NHS Fylde & Wyre CCG

“There are more than 3,000 clubs, societies and groups on the FYi directory offering all kinds of services from football to knitting groups. There is something for everyone and by joining any of them people will see the benefits in their health and well-being. It doesn’t have to be physical, though it can be, but something as simple as joining a reading club at the local library is enough to get people out and about, meeting new people, making new friends and improving their mood.” Self-care is about taking time to do things that keep you well. This might be having a wellstocked medicine cabinet, improving your diet, taking more exercise or joining a group. Self-care week gives local groups across the Fylde Coast a chance to promote themselves and encourage new members. Dr Janjua added: “This year we are building

BEN WALLACE MP As I get older it is not months that seem to fly by but seasons! Here we are in Autumn already, dare I say it, with Christmas around the corner. My mailbag continues to be filled with both local and national issues with the latest on BREXIT of course, dominating. With Parliament not sitting at the moment, it gives me a great opportunity to get out and about and catch up with what is going on in the constituency. It is always good for me to get out of Westminster whenever possible, back to the real world up here in Lancashire. I do spend a great deal of time traveling back and forth to London but that is a choice I have made in

order live with my family in Lancashire. As your local MP it is very important for me to understand the issues that affect local people and businesses. While I do receive many letters, there is no substitute to visiting businesses to understand the everyday challenges they face. With this in mind please do not hesitate to contact my office to arrange a visit. I have recently met with the Leader of the County Council and one of the issues discussed was highways. As I have mentioned before in this article, many rural roads have been improved with major works being carried out on the A588. I continue to work with local County Councillors to address safety issues with a view to improving safety. One issue that seems to happen on a regular basis and has happened on the A588 recently, is that just days after the road was resurfaced it was dug up again by a utility company to service a nearby development. The County has assured me that Officers do seek to co-ordinate road works and require companies to apply for a street works licence. Unfortunately, in the case of the A588 the company involved had not applied for a licence. After I highlighted this case to the County Council, Officers are to inspect the section of road and ensure that the road is resurfaced. I would like to thank residents for bringing this to my attention. Highways England are continuing to work on Norcross roundabout and I am keeping a close eye on how this is affecting local roads in the area, again please do not hesitate to contact me if you have views on this issue. Although, as you know Parliament is not sitting at the moment, I do encourage constituents to visit if it interests them. With this in mind, please remember tours of Parliament are possible on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays on sitting days.

Celebration Evensong Sun 13th Oct 6:30pm

With regard to gallery access, whenever the House of Commons or House of Lords are in session members of the general public can come in and watch proceedings from the Public Galleries. On Mondays to Thursdays the queue opens one hour before the sitting times. On sitting Fridays visitors can queue from 9:00am. You can find more information here: www. parliament.uk/visiting/ Tickets for Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesdays need to be secured through my Office. Unfortunately, MPs are given a limited number of allocated tickets so it is best if we can receive requests in advance. There is no charge for Gallery Tickets or tours booked through my Office. I continue to meet residents at my advice surgeries to discuss a wide range of issues. Please remember if you would like to attend one of my surgeries, the most effective way to contact me is by email, with a brief description of the issues you wish to raise and your contact details. It is worth bearing in mind that I can often offer assistance without the need for a meeting. As in previous months national issues continue to fill my mailbag. Please remember I am here to represent you and your views are important to me so please keep them coming. If I can be of any assistance to you please ring my Office at the House of Commons on 02072 195 804 or my Constituency Office on (01995) 672976, email me at wallaceb@ parliament.uk or write to me at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA. GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS Donations The Club agreed to give to the Lions District Zone a payment of £152.50 as our contribution to their Youth Opportunities Trust which funds a wide range of local and national events and activities for young people. The Lions were pleased to hear that the local Memory Café group is to receive a North West award for their Garstang in Bloom community project and that outline permission has been granted to do further work to develop a garden at the rear of the Library using the monies allocated by us already. Fylde Women’s Aid have a continued need for new clothing items (babies, small children or ladies), new toys, new cosmetics or new toiletries. This appeal is ongoing with our

collection point being the Resources Centre (old Liberal Club on Bridge Street). We have just completed one delivery but with Christmas coming are planning another soon and would like to create some festive gift bags to distribute to the refuges being supported. Events and Activities The final activity involving the organisation of car parking was the Lancashire Game and Country Fair which went very well with both days being both dry and busy. Our next big event is the Lions Bonfire and Firework Display to be held on Sat 2nd Nov with the lighting of the fire planned for 7:00pm and a spectacular fireworks show to follow. Admission prices are being kept amazingly low at only £4 for adults; £2 for those of school age (up to 16) and with those of a preschool age being allowed free entry. The Club will once again be assisting in parking cars for the popular Myerscough 10 mile run on Sun 1st Dec. The Lions will be hosting their annual Mencap Christmas Lunch on Sun 8th Dec at the Wyrebank Banqueting Suite. Planning has begun for this already and about 120 guests and helpers are expected to attend with arrival from 12:00 noon onwards. As usual the Lions will be assisting Santa Claus at the Garstang Victorian Festival on Mon 9th Dec and Tues 10th Dec. Please watch out for and visit our Grotto which will be outside the Kings Arms. Our club continues to expand with a total of 25 in the club now and any new members are invited to attend three meetings before making their decision to join us. If you want to add your name to this growing list then you would be very welcome. SEPSIS & UTIs Why your pee shouldn’t be the colour of strong tea Fylde Coast residents are being asked to check the colour of their urine in a drive to reduce the cases of sepsis as a result of urinary tract infections. Health organisations are working hard to tackle sepsis, also known as blood poisoning. People staying in hospital are regularly tested for signs of sepsis in an attempt to reduce hospital acquired infections and Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has already seen inhospital cases reduced by half. Attention is now turning to people who do not often see a health professional. People living alone often fall victim to sepsis as a result of contracting a urinary tract infection (UTI). The infection can become more severe and lead to more severe infections

Margaret hails from Workington and for the next year will support and encourage all the Inner Wheel Clubs in Cumbria and the northern half of Lancashire.
