She decided after being a farmer’s wife and mother of two daughters who were about to ‘leave the nest’ that she would be a part time fire fighter. After two weeks initial training building up muscles and stamina with recruits half her age her moment of dread came, they had to climb up a three storey building. She is afraid of heights and bottled it. However, she thought ‘We all have to do things in life we don’t want to do, so come on and conquer this’ and on her second training session she mastered it. There were many dark moments during the 14 week training, like running up Winter Hill as a 40yr old competing with 19 year olds.

PILLING LANE WI Wed 2nd Oct 7:30pm St Oswalds Parish Hall Pilling Lane WI had a very entertaining evening at our September meeting where Yvonne Pinder and her partner told us stories about their travels around America in a camper van which they hired in America. The van was quite big and expanded in the middle to give them more room when they stayed overnight on the sites. They started off on the West coast and travelled over to the East coast, stopping off at Chicago, Niagra falls, Yellowstone Park and Mount Rushmore to name a few. Our next meeting is a Member’s Meeting, and some of our members will be showing their crafts for us to join in and make. Anne Bewes 07921 457 013

LORD OF BOWLAND LECTURE The Forest of Bowland under the Tudors and Stuarts Tues 1st Oct 7:30pm Tithe Barn, Browsholme Hall Cow Ark, Clitheroe. BB7 3DE In this year’s ninth Lord of Bowland Annual Lecture, Dr Bill Shannon will explain how hunting rather than trees traditionally defined a Royal Forest like Bowland. Medieval kings and nobles established forests and chases for pleasure and prestige, for the preservation of the deer and to provide gifts of venison for their followers. The Forest of Bowland under the Tudors and Stuarts will chart the gradual decline of Bowland as a Forest; beginning with Henry VII’s desire to put Crown lands on a sound business footing in order to maximise his revenues and ending when James I completed the process a hundred years later.

CALPOL AND KIDS Here at Tofalos Towers we have the delight of a nine month old daughter to keep us entertained and challenged in equal measure. We also have family and friends with young children charging around to add to the mix. What I have found interesting is observing the seemingly all pervading use of Calpol for just about any issue involving children. Teething? Use Calpol. Not sleeping? Use Calpol. Crying a bit too much? Use Calpol. A raised temperature? Use Calpol. For those not familiar with Calpol it is an over the counter medication that is basically paracetamol for children. There is also a newer version that has ibuprofen in it too. Paracetamol can cause liver and kidney damage but is commonly used as an antipyretic (ie, reduce a fever). It is very easy to overdose on and there are concerns that this can easily happen in the crossover time when a parent picks their child up from a

18

grandparent and they are both giving the child Calpol. Unwittingly they may both have given Calpol at different times but ended up with too much in one day. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory drug that can damage the stomach lining and cause internal bleeding. Studies show that for every 1000 users of ibuprofen three have heart attacks and one is fatal. Do you really want to give this to your child? It seems the one symptom in children that people are most concerned about is that of a fever. Calpol is used as an antipyretic – in other words it can lower a temperature when a child has a fever. Most concern extends to when a fever rises above 40 degrees C where both lay people and medics fear the trauma of a febrile convulsion. Therefore, I thought I would check the science behind this. Firstly, we know that a fever is a protective reaction of the body to help recovery. A raised

CALPOL AND KIDS (cont) temperature can destroy that which is making you ill without harming you. Secondly, there is no evidence that a temperature above 40 increases a child’s chance of a febrile convulsion. There are other factors that are more important such as preexisting medical conditions or a family history.

Therefore, if your child does not exhibit any of the above you should not give them Calpol. The research acknowledges that this may cause parents considerable anxiety because they are doing nothing but it also says that most children with a temperature do not show any of the above symptoms or problems.

Thirdly, in most children, most of the time, who have a febrile convulsion there is no long term harm caused. Of course that does not mean we advocate watching it happen and doing nothing. The latest scientific advice is that you should only use Calpol for fever if your child exhibits the following:

A case in point is my daughter who has had two high temperatures, we think related to teething. She was still her usual happy self but was hot. We did not use Calpol and just ensured we took layers off her so she could stay cool. Within 12 hours her temperature was back to normal.

Pain, excessive lethargy, discomfort and delirium. This is mainly to reduce parental anxiety than for any major therapeutic benefit.

If the child has been burnt or has heart or lung problems.

Our body is remarkably capable of fixing itself, at any age, with the right conditions and care. Please think twice about handing out such potent medication to your children/ grandchildren and do so with good reasoning. Nick Tofalos (01995) 602833

Cllr Robert Drobny has stepped down for personal reasons. Cllr Andrew Cropper steps into his shoes. We would like to thank Robert for his help and wish him well in the future.

If you do not attend church, but would like a prayer said for either yourself or someone you know then please do not hesitate to contact us by dropping a note through the letterbox or emailing hambletonurc@gmail.com We will more than happy to include it in our services. Please be reminded of the Coffee Morning held every Wednesday morning 10:30am till 12 noon. Come and join us for a nice drink, biscuits and fellowship. Also, Soup & Cake returns this month, which will be held in the church hall on Sat 12th Oct. The cost is just £3. Such a bargain!

Feasibility studies have been carried out and we are now busy raising funds to pay for an architect to help with plans before applying for planning permission. We also have a Lord and Lady joined the group, and we offer our thanks for their valuable help to Lady Francesca Hamilton Jones and her husband Graham.

Services are held every Sunday at 10:00am and all are welcome to join us. We are an animal friendly church.

Now for the surprise! Going back to the feasibility plans, the Railway may be going 15” Gauge. It’s more practical, feasible and cost effective to fit in with our plans. On this matter our thanks also go to The Windmill Farm Railway whose help has been most appreciated and we look forward to working Mr Greens Veg box green book 1_4 page.pdf with them on a possible joint venture.

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE Message from Dr Vicky Simpson Flu Clinics - How many weeks to Christmas? Surely not! It is that time of year again when Autumn is creeping in and it is time for the annual flu campaign. We are running clinics on Saturday mornings when our dedicated nurses and doctors will be providing flu vaccinations to those over 65 years or in at risk groups. Please book your slot in one of these clinics or during the alternative sessions provided. Patients are kindly asked to phone midmorning to book Flu Clinics so that the initial calls received first thing in the morning are free for emergencies. The dates for our Flu Clinics for over 65’s are as follows: Sat 5th Oct Preesall, Sat 12th Oct Preesall and Sat 26th Oct Preesall.

The Flu Clinics for 18 to 65 year olds at risk will commence as follows: Fri 4th Oct Hambleton and Sat 26th Oct Preesall. Treatment Room Update - We are fully aware of the difficulties experienced by some of our patients in July when our treatment room nurse took annual leave. Some patients kindly attended the clinic at Fleetwood to receive interim care. To overcome these difficulties arising in future, we are training our Health Care Assistants to provide extra support with dressings and employing an extra phlebotomist to provide appointments for blood taking. Our aim is to provide a more stable cover so that when our staff take annual leave, there are health professionals in place to cover this important workload. We hope for clinics to run smoothly whilst

OVER WYRE MEDICAL (cont) our Health Care Assistants are receiving extra training and we ask for your continued support during this transition period. Community Values - With a vast rural community, rolling countryside and small villages, the Over Wyre region is not quite like anywhere else in Lancashire. Historically, it has been sparsely populated and geographically distinct from the rest of the Fylde Coast. Speaking to both younger and older generations of people, my impression is that this community has been tightly knit for years and this is something the people of this area are proud of. The ‘Green Book’ itself beautifully illustrates the huge array of local supportive events throughout the region. This is a wonderful resource, signposting people to something joyful for them.

Nurturing strong community spirit and encouraging self-help to boost health and well-being is certainly something that a number of us will feel passionate about. This approach works well for active and mobile residents but what about the isolated housebound population who perhaps would love to get out into the community to meet people and interact? At Over Wyre Medical Centre, I have recently been introduced to Mark Trent, working for the Lancashire Volunteer Service. He tells me that there are a large number of people in need of volunteer support Over Wyre but a distinct lack of volunteers. He is passionate about recruiting volunteers from within our community to provide help our fellow neighbours. In an attempt to entice new volunteers into his organisation, Mark will be running a drop-in session at the Over

OVER WYRE MEDICAL (cont) Wyre Medical Centre on the last Friday of every month (2:00pm – 4:00pm) from our new community space ‘The Front Room’. The Front Room is a community space designed to be informative and welcoming to our patients and is ideally placed to host community events. It would be lovely to pair up some willing volunteers with people in need.

short hand and foot massages in a relaxing environment to help with stress, anxiety and general wellbeing. This has been very well received and it has been a joy to see the community coming together to enjoy this. The Front Room was opened in May and has been hosting some wonderful peer-led events on a weekly or monthly basis for a range of different problems.

Let me give you some examples of how our volunteer patients here at Over Wyre Medical Centre are cultivating community spirit and empowering people to improve their own health and happiness.

A member of our patient participation group, Helen Roberts, has opened the doors to a monthly Bereavement Group inviting anybody who has been affected by the loss of a loved one.

A volunteer patient, Jeannette Corry, who is also a trained therapist in complementary medicine, gives a variety of relaxing treatments to patients at the Medical Centre on a weekly basis.

This is hosted as a coffee morning on the first Friday of every month. An inspirational lady, Deborah Sykes, from a charity called ‘12 Million Minds’, has run mindfulness and meditation sessions to help people deal with stress, low mood and anxiety and more

OVER WYRE MEDICAL (cont) recently, has organised charity craft sessions. The charity sector have been very enthusiastic about our community room. We have the Alzheimer’s Society, the MacMillan Nurses and Age UK providing us with monthly drop in sessions. Information on the times of these can be obtained from this book or at the medical centre. Patients with chronic pain have been meeting at the ‘Blackpool Smile’ group every Monday afternoon at the medical centre for a helpful and fun peer-support group. The ‘Freshers Dementia Café’ is a wonderful group set up by a gentleman with excellent knowledge of dementia himself. Hopefully, this initiative can grow over time, enticing more local people in need to attend and also more willing volunteers to come forward to help their neighbours. This self-sufficient and charitable approach to

improving health and wellbeing demonstrates the potential merits of having these resources open and available to the community. Please do contact us at the Medical Centre if you have any further ideas for utilising our Front Room. We’d love to hear them! Dr Vicky Simpson Over Wyre Medical Centre (01253) 951165

CAT SMITH MP I’ve recently been in discussions with the Citizen’s Advice Bureau (CAB) looking at whether its possible for them to provide some advice surgeries in Knott End. It’s important to me that people who live in rural parts of the constituency have the same access to services as those who live in the towns and cities. There’s also a great deal of research which suggests there are hidden problems in rural areas, like Knott End, Preesall and Pilling, where families often struggle on low incomes to pay their rent, bills and put food on the table – and yet food banks and support services are often difficult to access without access to a car.

CAB is currently looking for a suitable venue in Knott End and I’ll be helping them to publicise their service once arrangements have been made. If you are having problems with Universal Credit or any other issues, please email me on Cat.Smith.MP@parliament.uk or call my office (01253) 490440. This week I met with the Directors of Kirby Lonsdale Coaches who provide the 89 bus service between Knott End and Lancaster. It’s probably one of the most scenic bus journeys through the constituency, taking in Cockerham and Glasson Dock. It would be great if there was a later service back from Lancaster to Knott End so that more people could enjoy the nightlife, restaurants, bars and theatres of Lancaster – but the bus company can only provide this service if it’s used. I’d be interested in your views. Would this

Normally I hold ‘Chats with Cat’ or advice surgeries in libraries and village halls but instead I’ll be holding a surgery on the 89 bus from Lancaster to Knott End. I’ll let you know the date when arrangements have been finalised! You can pop on the bus and have a natter with me about any issue that concerns or interests you or that you want to highlight. Or you may just fancy helping me scoff some wine gums and enjoy the views!

I was sorry to hear about another serious accident on the junction with Burned House Lane. I’ve this week chased up the Highways Department at Lancashire County Council who I’d contacted when the last collision occurred. I’d like to know what ideas they have for making the junction safer as well as a clear idea of when these measures will be implemented before anyone else is hurt. Earlier this year, the BBC announced that free TV licences for over 75s will come to an end in June 2020. This will result in up to 3.7 million older people losing their free TV licence. Unfortunately, in 2015 – as part of the BBC’s Charter renewal – the cost of these licences was shifted to the BBC from 2020. Therefore, from 1st June 2020, there will be a new scheme, where anyone aged 75 or over who receives Pension Credit, will still be

CAT SMITH MP (cont) eligible for a free licence which the BBC will pay for. Households where there is no one aged 75 or over that receives Pension Credit, will need to buy a TV licence if one is needed.

TV Licensing will write to you in good time before the new scheme comes into force to explain how you can pay for your next TV licence.

I would therefore urge you to check your entitlement to Pension Credit by:

I can assure you I will be pressing the Government to overturn this decision and to honour its commitment to protect free TV licences for the over-75s.

1. Checking online to see if you qualify on the following web address www.gov.uk/ pension-credit/eligibility 2. Calling the Pension Service helpline on 08007 310 469. 3. Contacting my office on (01253) 490440 or by emailing cat.smith.mp@ parliament.uk Unfortunately, if you do not receive Pension Credit and don’t qualify for the benefit, you will have to pay for your TV licence from 1st June 2020. You will, however, stay licensed for free until 31st May 2020.

I’m always keen to hear from you and if there’s anything I can help you with then please do get in touch. Cat Smith MP

BEN WALLACE MP As I get older it is not months that seem to fly by but seasons! Here we are in Autumn already, dare I say it, with Christmas around the corner. My mailbag continues to be filled with both local and national issues with the latest on BREXIT of course, dominating. With Parliament not sitting at the moment, it gives me a great opportunity to get out and about and catch up with what is going on in the constituency. It is always good for me to get out of Westminster whenever possible, back to the real world up here in Lancashire. I do spend a great deal of time traveling back and forth to London but that is a choice I have made in

order live with my family in Lancashire. As your local MP it is very important for me to understand the issues that affect local people and businesses. While I do receive many letters, there is no substitute to visiting businesses to understand the everyday challenges they face. With this in mind please do not hesitate to contact my office to arrange a visit. I have recently met with the Leader of the County Council and one of the issues discussed was highways. As I have mentioned before in this article, many rural roads have been improved with major works being carried out on the A588. I continue to work with local County Councillors to address safety issues with a view to improving safety. One issue that seems to happen on a regular basis and has happened on the A588 recently, is that just days after the road was resurfaced

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) it was dug up again by a utility company to service a nearby development. The County has assured me that Officers do seek to co-ordinate road works and require companies to apply for a street works licence. Unfortunately, in the case of the A588 the company involved had not applied for a licence. After I highlighted this case to the County Council, Officers are to inspect the section of road and ensure that the road is resurfaced. I would like to thank residents for bringing this to my attention. Highways England are continuing to work on Norcross roundabout and I am keeping a close eye on how this is affecting local roads in the area, again please do not hesitate to contact me if you have views on this issue. Although, as you know Parliament is not sitting at the moment, I do encourage constituents to visit if it interests them. With this in mind,

please remember tours of Parliament are possible on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays on sitting days. To request a tour my office would need the size of the group visiting and some possible dates. Tours can be booked five months in advance and given the limited nature of the tours can book up quickly. With regard to gallery access, whenever the House of Commons or House of Lords are in session members of the general public can come in and watch proceedings from the Public Galleries. On Mondays to Thursdays the queue opens one hour before the sitting times. On sitting Fridays visitors can queue from 9:00am. I continue to meet residents at my advice surgeries to discuss a wide range of issues. Please remember if you would like to attend one of my surgeries, the most effective way to contact me is by email, with a brief description of the issues you wish to raise and your contact details.

It is worth bearing in mind that I can often offer assistance without the need for a meeting. As in previous months national issues continue to fill my mailbag. Please remember I am here to represent you and your views are important to me so please keep them coming.

CLUB TOGETHER IMPROVE HEALTH

HAFFNER ORCHESTRA

Groups, clubs and societies across the Fylde Coast are being called upon to help encourage residents to improve their health and wellbeing.

Sat 2nd Nov 7:30pm Great Hall, Lancaster University

If you run a keep fit or knitting class, a football or any kind of club, then Fylde Coast health and wellbeing organisations want to hear from you. Self Care Week runs from 18th - 24th November. Locally, Blackpool Council, Fylde Council, Wyre Council, health services and a range of voluntary and community groups are working together to make Self Care Week a celebration of all the groups on the Fylde Coast. Dr Adam Janjua, Acting Chair of Fylde and Wyre Clinical Commissioning Group and local GP said: “Last year many of the groups that promote themselves on the FYi directory website offered taster sessions for people. This year we want to involve even more groups”. Self-care is about taking time to do things that keep you well. This might be having a wellstocked medicine cabinet, improving your diet, taking more exercise or joining a group. Dr Janjua added: “This year we are building on what we did last year which saw more than 70 events taking place over the week and hundreds of people taking part.

An evening of late 19th century music from Lancaster’s symphony orchestra. Conductor: Jonathan Lo. Soloist: Leland Chen. Offenbach ‘Overture to La Belle Hélène’. Bruch ‘Scottish Fantasy for Violin & Orchestra’ and Sibelius ‘Symphony No. 1’. Tickets £14.50 from www.haffnerorchestra. org or (01524) 582394. Students £5 at the door; 18’s and under free. “Groups reported that they had new members who were all giving it a go which is a fantastic result. It means that people were embracing self-care and were all making a big step to improving their health. This year, amongst other plans, we want to double that impact.” If you run a club or group, charity or service that helps people and would like to take part in Self Care Week 2019 all you have to do is think of what your offer will be and email comms.fyldecoast@nhs.net or call (01253) 951349. RSPCA Special Appeals Sammy Sammy is a sweet girl who came into the centre due to concerns for her welfare. She is an excitable lady who is full of life with a character to match. She loves to meet new people, is inquisitive and likes to explore everything. She enjoys her walks and is exceptionally well mannered. She is currently walked on a harness and lead. Sammy likes the company of familiar dogs when on walks but can be unsure around new dogs so we think she would be happier being the only dog in the household. Sammy has a fantastic nature but would be

better suited to a home with older children due to her excitable nature. She is such a friendly girl and will make an excellent family pet and loyal companion. Kitty Kitty is a quiet cat who came into the centre after concerns arose for her welfare. Initially very nervous on arrival she is now making great improvements and growing in confidence. She spends a lot of time in her igloo bed watching the world go by and is just starting to venture out to explore her pod. She takes a little while to get to know and trust you but after some time she enjoys receiving a fuss which is when you can really see her loving

RSPCA (cont) and sweet side come out. Kitty is looking for an experienced cat home where adopters have the time and patience to carry on building her trust and help to boost her confidence. Apollo Apollo is a friendly but nervous rabbit who has had very little interaction with people. However he is getting braver with each day that passes. Due to his nervous nature, we feel that he is better suited to someone who has experience with rabbits. Apollo will need a large double tier hutch and a large attached run. He is possibly ok to live with a neutered female rabbit but they would need to be introduced slowly at first. Cat Food Appeal We are running extremely low on wet cat food including tins and sachets. We can have over 40 cats in our care at any one time so there are always plenty of mouths to feed. Our store cupboard is starting to look a little bare so any donations of wet cat food would be very much appreciated. Any items can be dropped off at the Animal Centre in Stalmine between 11:00am - 5:00pm, Tuesday to Sunday.

Sea Bank House

A special home for special people Sea Bank House is a residential home for elderly people who are unable to live independently in their own homes. Or philosophy of care is based on the belief that it is the right of any resident in the home to be respected as an individual, and that everyone has the right to be allowed to live as full and active a life as both their mental and physical condition allows. We endeavour to provide an environment which is not only comfortable and homely, but gives the warmth and understanding normally associated with family care but supported by specialist equipment and well trained care sta. Needs are met maintaining personal dignity, privacy and encouraging independence where possible. Activities, passive and active are encouraged throughout the day by trained care sta under the guidance of the Home Manager. Each care plan takes into consideration the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs, in order to create a care plan that is relevant to individuals. CRY Screening News ‘Every penny counts’. If you’ve ever had any doubts about whether this slogan still holds true in this day and age you only have to look to Matt’s Milk Bottle Challenge to see it really does. What started out as a few family members and close friends collecting ‘a pint of pennies’ in memory of Matt as a part-time milkie, has way exceeded our expectations, raising enough to fund an extra day of heart screening during CRY’s national raising awareness week. Thanks to the generosity of so many folks one hundred places will be on offer to anyone aged 14-35 at Garstang Medical Practice, on Sun 17th Nov. Please Note: Appointments will be available on-line at www.testmyheart. org.uk from Mon 30th Sept. ‘Matt’s Milk Bottle Challenge 2!’ is now well under way little things make big things happen!

SOROPTIMISTS Women inspiring action, transforming lives Back to Work September arrived very quickly, and it was time for us to regroup after our summer break. We need to start off with news of our Tuk Tuk project - well done Jackie and Kathy – their cycle ride from Grange to Garstang was a huge success and they have so far raised over £750 with money still coming in.

As you can see from our Tuk Tuk barometer, everyone’s generosity has made a huge impact on our total as we are already past the quarter mark!

SOROPTIMISTS (cont) A Warm Welcome It was also a great start to the new session as we inducted our latest member to the group, Chloe. She’s a vibrant young lady with lots of ideas and a desire, like the rest of us, to put something back into society. Hazel, one of our founder members, welcomed Chloe officially to the group – this is a simple but moving event, to show the new member just how special they are. A Sad Farewell We took a tour down Memory Lane for our social meeting in September. Sadly, Pat Manley, one of our long-standing members of over 40 years, passed away last month. She was a special person, not only to our group but to others in our region as well. Always there to support, always involved in whatever project we were doing at the time, a fantastic treasurer and a true friend. As a result, a large cargo of Soroptimist documentation containing many photographs was delivered to us and we took this opportunity to toast Pat with tea and cake and to remember all the good times captured in the photographs. A great time was had identifying and documenting these and adding them to our scrapbooks. Looking Ahead The time is moving quickly to our next conference which will take place in Bournemouth. This is our annual big meet-up with members from all across our Federation to review the work we do, plan for the future, network and generally have a good dose of fun and friendship! Our next event will be a bit of retail therapy in November when we are visited by My Pink Angel, a chance to have some exquisite costume jewellery, accessories and more brought to us ready for Christmas – come along and take a look on Wed 27th Nov. Please continue to drop off your used

backpacks or other items at The Mustard Seed Café, Park Hill Road (opposite the Wheat Sheaf Pub). Yhey are open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 10:00am to 2:00pm. Or ring us to arrange collection. Why not come and find out if you could make a difference? It could be the best thing you’ve ever done! We meet twice a month at the Garstang Hotel and Golf Club, at 7:00pm on the second and fourth Wednesday (excluding August and December). Interested ladies are always very welcome. Please ring our membership co-ordinator Muriel BurnhamAirey (01995) 606604 to arrange to be met, or just come and introduce yourself. Visitors can enjoy wonderful homemade refreshments and an exhibition of local history in the parish hall. There will be a large selection of jigsaws for sale available in the school. The jottings and drawings in his ancestor’s notebook prompted an interest in the history of woodworking, cabinet and furniture making in the Fylde area 250 years ago. Bill went on to transcribe and reproduce Thomas Noblet’s workbook (along with opposite page facing transcriptions and notes) as an unusual paperback. It shows Thomas’s sketches from his various commissions including clock casings, clothes chests, chests of drawers, doors, spice boxes, church pews, tables, cradles, bannisters, chairs and squabs (settees). Details of measurements, costings, expenses, itemised listings of timber, financial borrowings and mathematical calculations in the book all show Thomas’s eye for detail, how a local craftsman operated all those years ago, as well as details of the Noblet family and their relations, the Jolly family, over several centuries.

GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS Donations The Club agreed to give to the Lions District Zone a payment of £152.50 as our contribution to their Youth Opportunities Trust which funds a wide range of local and national events and activities for young people. The Lions were pleased to hear that the local Memory Café group is to receive a North West award for their Garstang in Bloom community project and that outline permission has been granted to do further work to develop a garden at the rear of the Library using the monies allocated by us already. Fylde Women’s Aid have a continued need for new clothing items (babies, small children or ladies), new toys, new cosmetics or new toiletries. This appeal is ongoing with our

collection point being the Resources Centre (old Liberal Club on Bridge Street). We have just completed one delivery but with Christmas coming are planning another soon and would like to create some festive gift bags to distribute to the refuges being supported. Events and Activities The final activity involving the organisation of car parking was the Lancashire Game and Country Fair which went very well with both days being both dry and busy. Our next big event is the Lions Bonfire and Firework Display to be held on Sat 2nd Nov with the lighting of the fire planned for 7:00pm and a spectacular fireworks show to follow. Admission prices are being kept amazingly low at only £4 for adults; £2 for those of school age (up to 16) and with those of a preschool age being allowed free entry. ST AIDAN’S NEWS The mornings are gradually getting darker and that only means one thing - we are back in the Autumn term and on our way to Christmas. After a long summer of rest, we are ready to work our socks off! This month we have welcomed our wonderful new Year 7 pupils to Saint Aidan’s and look forward to watching them blossom over the next five years. They have only been here a few weeks, yet it seems like they have always been here. The Saint Aidan’s effect means that we have amazingly confident and happy pupils from day one up until the day they leave! Although we are thrilled to have welcomed our new Year 7 pupils, unfortunately we had to say our final goodbyes to our former Year 11 pupils. The GCSE results they amassed this year were fantastic, with a superb 80% of students achieving the new grade 4 (equivalent to the old C grade) in English,

62

82% in Maths and 84% in Science. Headteacher Andy Smith said, ‘I would like to congratulate all of our students and staff who have worked so hard for their grades. We have seen some amazing exam results and as well as celebrating our highest achievers I would like to mention the work teachers and other members of staff have done with some of our students who face major challenges out of school and who have done particularly well this year.’ Mrs Bray and a few other teachers had the amazing opportunity to take some of our pupils to spend 5 days in France during the six weeks off. The pupils really enjoyed themselves, not only taking part in physically enduring watersports such as paddle boarding and canoeing, but also playing tug-of-war and volleyball, doing archery, climbing high ropes and building rafts. All this in the thirtydegree heat!

ST AIDAN’S NEWS (cont) Whilst on the topic of school trips, we have another coming up in October half term. This time it’s Berlin! 35 budding Year 10 and 11 linguists are going to be testing their knowledge of German language, whilst submersed in German culture. Pupils will have the opportunity to see famous and historically crucial monuments, such as the Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Wall, the Reichstag and a personal favourite of mine... the DDR Museum. Naturally, as I am the trip leader, there will be time for shopping too! On Thurs 17th Oct we are proud to host our wonderful annual event at The Villa, Wrea Green. Students from Years 9 - 11 with a passion for catering and hospitality will be running the entire evening at the Villa. This is the perfect chance for our pupils to showcase their skills, from designing the menu to producing and serving the food.

Additionally, we have many of our budding musicians and entertainers providing brilliant entertainment all evening. Tickets are £22 for the full three course meal. We would love to see as many supporters as we can! Coming up in our next report - a full run-down of our evening at The Villa and much more! Until then, keep an eye on our Twitter page @ SaintAidansCEHS for any updates. Chloe Butler - Media Co-ordinator

Raiser category.

At the September Branch meeting members were notifed that Ray Bradburn, our Branch President, had won the Greater Manchester and Lancashire Area Award in the Individual Fund-

The Branch Chairman, Secretary and Councillor Andrea Kay, Wyre Borough Council Veteran’s Champion, attended the Awards ceremony with Ray in September. We were so pleased for Ray as he is not only the Branch’s best Poppy Appeal Fund-raiser but was only 10 days away from his 90th Birthday! Ray was overawed at winning but was even more so when the whole gathering sang Happy Birthday to him. The Award is well deserved. He has been collecting for the Poppy Appeal for 53 years – some achievement! Well Done Ray. You are a star. We are looking forward to seeing how much you can raise this coming year. The Poppy Appeal for 2018/19 closed on Mon 30th Sept. The total for Over Wyre is a staggering £9233.19 which is an increase of £2784.25 over the 2017/18 total. This is not due solely to those who organise the Poppy Appeal in Over Wyre but to the communities of Knott End, Preesall, Stalmine, Hambleton and Pilling who have donated so very generously throughout the year. It is an honour to be the Poppy Appeal Organisers for this area. Last year we were placed 3rd in the category for those Organisers with a community under 10,000. Hopefully we might now be in line to be raised to 2nd place. Wonderful – how we love living in such a community. The Poppy Appeal for 2019/20 begins on Tues 1st Oct. The closed period for fundraising is from Thurs 26th Sept to Tues 8th

LLOYDS PHARMACY, KNOTT END A Personal Experience In the August and September editions of Focus Magazine, Cat Smith MP raised concerns about people experiencing difficulty with the prescription services at Lloyds Pharmacy in Knott End. She reported that ‘a significant number of constituents’ had been in touch to say they are having difficulties getting their prescriptions. In response to these concerns, Cat Smith contacted Lloyd’s Head Office and was waiting to hear back on the findings of an investigation. Just out of curiosity, I rang Lloyds Pharmacy Head Office myself. I spoke to a very pleasant young lady who was extremely helpful. She told me that from January 2019 to the beginning of September 2019 they had received only six complaints regarding the Knott End branch of Lloyds Pharmacy - in comparison to other branches she confirmed this number of complaints to be very small.

HAMBLETON PARISH COUNCIL Next Meeting The next Ordinary meeting of Hambleton Parish Council will be held on Tues 1st Oct at Hambleton Village Hall, Church Lane. It will begin at 7:30pm. I need several types of medication and have occasionally missed something from my prescriptions. Staff at the Knott End branch of Lloyds Pharmacy have gone out of their way to get me my medications in time, without complaint. The other members of staff are always pleasant and polite, often asking how customers are. I have never heard them being offhand or rude to anyone, even when I have heard certain customers be abusive to them. The staff at the Knott End branch were deeply saddened after reading Cat Smith’s comments in the August and September editions of Over Wyre Focus. I am not doubting that constituents have been in touch regarding the prescription

Unfortunately our scheduled speaker was suddenly taken ill and was unable to proceed. Those attending were told of Ray Bradburn’s success at the Royal British Legion Area Awards and were able to take advantage of having a piece of his 90th birthday cake which Ray didn’t want as he cannot take sugar. Thanks Ray it was delicious. There were, again, some members who had brought in memorabilia from theirs or their parents service life and then the usual Service banter/humour and tales of service life. All in all a good morning except for the unexpected event. The one thing that sticks out is the constant mention of ‘Well I only did National Service’ or ‘I only did 2 years’. It doesn’t matter how long a person served - in the eyes of the exService charities you are a veteran after only either 1 day or 5 days service depending upon which charity it is and that ruling is good enough for our Group and for anyone to attend our gatherings. If you have a story to tell of your life in the Service or just like a laugh or you just want to get out of the house for two hours come along to our monthly gatherings. I can assure you will be made welcome along with a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit. PREESALL TOWN COUNCIL NEWS Tree Tribute A date has been set for the planting of two trees at Knott End’s Jubilee garden to mark the long service of two former Preesall Town Councillors. The rowans, one red and the other yellow, are in honour of Jean Mutch and Rosina Lawson, who were in office for a combined 77 years. They will be installed on Sat 30th Nov, the Woodland Trust’s Tree Charter Day. A time for the ceremony will be announced in due course. Audit Approved Along with other Councils, Preesall Town Council must submit its financial accounts for independent scrutiny by an external auditor. The Council attaches great importance to running its financial affairs responsibly and transparently, so it is pleased to confirm that its accounts for the year ending 31st March 2019 have been confirmed to be in order. Grants Advice At its meeting in November the Council will begin to determine its budget for the financial year beginning next April. Organisations considering applying for a grant from the Council are therefore advised to apply soon, so the Council has an idea of what sums might be required for its grants programme. More information is available on the Council’s website. Road Closure This year’s Remembrance ceremony will take place on Sun 10th Nov and parts of Lancaster Road will be closed between 10:45am and 11:30am that day for the civic procession. Lancaster Road will be shut at its junctions with Grasmere Avenue, Pilling Lane and Park Lane. Next Meeting

We are pleased to welcome our newly elected Chairman, Chris Hyde, who was unanimously voted into the Chair and look forward to his leadership. Many thanks go to our former Chairman, Peter Swarbrick. Peter has worked so hard for our village over the seven years of his SSRA leadership and has agreed to take on the role of Research Adviser to the SSRA. A sincere thank you goes to Peter and we will continue to benefit from his vast experience in many fields. We also welcomed new committee member Mick Dennison of ‘Monsters of Rock’ fame. We are thrilled Mick has joined us and that the committee continues to grow and expand its expertise in many differing fields. The SSRA sub-committee meeting (community events), led by newly elected Chairman, Ann Ralph, met before the full SSRA September committee meeting to discuss and plan events leading up to Christmas. Our annual Lantern Making event will take place on or near Mon 25th Nov at Stalmine

GARSTANG ARTS CENTRE Garstang Ukulele Group Regular readers of this column will be aware that in the 17th century, two young ukulele lovers were hunted down by Cromwellian soldiers in their purge of British art. Until now this was considered a rare event in Lancashire with the Millennium Green bodies being unique north of Chester. However, in the past 6 months secret excavations have been taking place off Woods Lane, near Woodlands Country Park, where four more bodies and a hoard of musical instruments have been found. These remains are thought to be about a century later than the Cherestanc lovers, clear into the Hanoverian era. Dr Jan Somersby, emeritus professor of cider studies at the Carlsberg University of Catterall has described the find as evidence of a continuing purge of real music by a secret society of nocturnal harpsichord players.

Discontent at not being able to play outside in the sunshine, they would roam the country at night seeking to destroy the instruments of anyone who played music in daylight. Dr Somersby believes that when they were disturbed by the Wood Lane string quartet, their fury led to an abominable act of terror, in which all four were brutally slain. For modern music without any slaying, check us out at www.garstangukulelegroup.co.uk Bob Sapey Poetry Appreciation Group Fri 25th Oct 2:00pm - 4:00pm.
