NATURAL IMMUNE BOOSTS Did you know there is no hard evidence as to how we ‘catch’ a cold. Time and again in studies immunologists admit their understanding of how viruses are transmitted is extremely limited. A quote from a workshop held by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in November 2010 states, ‘Despite numerous studies... the predominant mode or modes of transmission of influenza between humans remain to be clearly documented.’ Of course there are theories about sneezing and coughing etc but no actual evidence to support them. So what is going on here? Well I suspect that the situation is not so black and white because your body has a whole host of defences to stop us ‘catching a cold’. Our skin is remarkably effective as a barrier to viruses, our nose has mucus and hairs
to capture anything we may inhale and our mouth has saliva that is both antibacterial and antiviral. If all of these factors are firing effectively then we are protected and that is before we take into account our internal immune system that is working all the time to keep bacteria, viruses and injuries at bay. Further evidence for this complex situation is that at any one time we have around 400 viruses in our body yet we are not ill. We have such an array of defences it is actually very hard for us to catch anything that will make us ill. I saw the NHS advert for staying well in the winter recently and it tells us to get a flu jab and visit a pharmacy. Really? That is how we stay well? Pharmacists are experts in pharmaceuticals, they are not necessarily health experts. In fact, you do not need to be an expert to be healthy and avoid illness in the winter. All you need to do is make sure you protect yourself with good health behaviour such as this: Sleep well with a consistent and calming sleep routine. If you feel tired or under the weather then rest. Do not underestimate the power of rest. You do not need to take suppressing medications to carry on, this leads to trouble further down the line, just rest and keep hydrated. Limit alcohol intake. Have you ever overindulged for a day or two then come down with a cold? That happens because you have assaulted your body’s defences and your body has to go into cleansing mode which is sneezing, coughing and eyes streaming. We call it a cold but it is actually a ‘cleansing’. Get fresh air every day and avoid being in constant central heating which dries out all your mucus membranes which are part of your first line of defence. Look after your digestive system which is vital for healthy immune system function. Simple

ways to help this are to avoid processed foods, eat real whole foods and limit sugar. Eating fermented foods such as kefir, kimchi or sauer kraut is also excellent and in the absence of these take a high quality probiotic.
Sat 2nd Nov 9:30am - 12 noon URC Church Hall, Garstang
Most modern food is lacking in many important minerals and vitamins due to the soil being so depleted from intensive farming so a good multivitamin is worth taking regularly. I’d also suggest taking some cannabinoids every now and then from a high quality CBD product. This is a minefield due to the vast array of dodgy products out there but there are good brands about. Cannabinoids help your body to maintain a healthy balance regardless of our environment. In conclusion, the best way to not be ill is to be healthy and you have more control over that than the medical system would have you believe. Nick Tofalos (01995) 918718

GARSTANG WINE CIRCLE At the end of September 27 members of the Wine Circle set off to spend a wine weekend in the beautiful old city of York. I am sure that many readers will suggest that we were heading in the wrong direction, and that we should have been heading South, but there is a vineyard just a few miles from the city.
the completion of the tour which took in more of the vineyard and the winery.
On the Friday night we had a dinner in our hotel with a collection of wines provided by a local wine merchant, Nick Chadwick, from the ‘Winearray’ shop in Boroughbridge to match the food. Excellent food and good wine provided the perfect start to the weekend.
We arrived back in York and had some free time for a wander around the city. People either joined the group, or made their own arrangements for dinner. Perhaps an unusual setting for a wine tour, but an entertaining and enjoyable weekend for the group.
After a leisurely start on the Saturday, we arrived at the ‘Yorkshire Heart’ Vineyard and Microbrewery. We were given an interesting and entertaining talk from Chris Spakouskas, the enthusiastic owner, on the history of the vineyard and a tour of some of the vines. A light lunch was provided to accompany the tasting of a selection of their wines, followed
Although only established for thirteen years, the vineyard is producing some very acceptable wines that can only get better as the vines age and develop more intense flavours in the grapes.
The October meeting of the circle took place on Mon 21st Oct, too late for the October issue of Focus. Stuart Rothwell, from the “Vineyard’ wineshop in Ramsbottom visited us for that meeting and presented a collection of wines from Rugby World Cup Countries. A report from this meeting will be included in the December report.

GARSTANG ARTS CENTRE (cont) Needlework Group We meet in the Arts Centre on Wednesday mornings from 10:00am to 12 noon. If you enjoy knitting, crochet, embroidery, patchwork, applique or would like to learn, do come and join this friendly, helpful group. Contact: Ann Kelsall (01995) 606408 or just turn up! Ukelele Group - Christmas Shopping November seems to be a reasonable time for Christmas shopping, for buying ukuleles for all your family. But if you are new to this, what should you look out for? There are four main types of ukulele – soprano; concert; tenor and baritone. Most people start with a soprano which can cost as little as £25. At this price they usually sound much the same so it is safe to buy online, but do check the reviews to make sure it will stay in tune.
However, going this cheap may be a false economy as you will probably want to upgrade well before Easter. It is better to spend a bit more, about £40-£50, and get something like a Makala Dolphin. That way it may be next Christmas before you are looking to upgrade – remember there’s no such thing as owning just one ukulele. Concerts are a bit bigger than a soprano and people with larger fingers may find that useful. The starting price is about £45, but you can go up to more than a thousand. It is worth visiting a music shop to hear and feel the instruments before choosing which to buy as you’ll probably find one you really love. Tenors are a bit larger again and have a slightly lower tone. Prices here will start at around £70. If you are buying for someone who already

GARSTANG ARTS CENTRE (cont) plays the guitar, it may be worth considering a baritone ukulele. All other ukuleles, sopranos, concerts and tenors are tuned to GCEA whereas the baritone is tuned DGBE, the same as the top four strings of a guitar.
There are also solid body ukuleles that have to be played through an amplifier. Another variation is the banjolele, a ukulele with a banjo resonator and made famous by George Formby.
This means the chord shapes are the same, making it easier to change instruments. As the name suggests it also has a lower tone and as with the tenors, their prices start at about £70.
And finally, how are they going to learn? There are some great online materials and we have some good links to get them started on the resources page of our website (see below) including electronic versions of our songbooks containing over 500 songs.
While your loved ones will be thrilled to receive their first ukulele, they will be delighted if you also buy them a tuner. These are widely available for about £10. There are some other variations you will come across when looking at ukuleles. While most ukuleles are acoustic, some have pickups fitted so they can be played through an amplifier which is ideal if you wish to perform as a soloist or in a small group.

GARSTANG ARTS & MUSIC FESTIVAL 2020 will be the 26th annual summer celebration of the lively arts. The festival takes place at venues throughout Garstang from Sat 22nd Aug (Bank Holiday Monday) Mon 31st Aug. The organising committee of volunteers meets about once a month to draw up the programme of events. Many of these are directly promoted by the group but more and more in recent years we have worked closely with other community groups to reflect and celebrate the rich diversity of interests in and around the town.
Having said that, we are keen to involve people who aren’t necessarily free during the day and would gladly look at holding evening meetings. Following the recent standing down of our longstanding secretary to pursue other personal and community interests, we’d be particularly interested in someone who could act as secretary to the committee not just taking minutes but helping come up with ideas, liaising with artists and helping organise and promote festival events.
We are keen to welcome new members from all walks of life - we’re not looking for experts, enthusiasm, friendliness and a willingness to help are far more important.
If you’d like to join a friendly group of volunteers to meet regularly and help keep the arts alive and kicking in Garstang (either as Festival Secretary or as a committee member) do get in touch.
At present we tend to meet over tea and biscuits in Garstang Arts Centre, usually on a weekday from 10:00am to about 12 noon.

GARSTANG AFV BREAKFAST CLUB Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Clubs The Armed Forces and Veterans’ Breakfast Clubs are groups of all arms, serving and veterans, of Her Majesties Armed Forces and her allies, who meet regularly to break bread together in a safe, informal environment, to allow them to ‘return to the tribe’. No subscriptions or fees. Buy your own breakfast, meet old comrades and indulge in some good old military banter. Our first official Breakfast Club proved to be a great success. The Mayor of Wyre and Mayor of Garstang kindly attended and gave their full support. One of our founding members and veteran Lee gave a short speech about his personal journey with PTSD and how support from local counselling services helped him overcome his issues.
One of the members called to say thank you to the team. He has had PTSD for a while and because of our club, he felt he was able to make the call to the relevant military mental health organisation. He is now booked in for treatment. We meet first Saturday of each month from 9:30am - 11:30am at Th’owd Tithebarn, Church Street, Garstang, PR3 1PA (01995) 604486. Parking is available, but please remember to enter your vehicle registration number at the bar as soon as you enter. SOROPTIMISTS Women Inspiring Action, Transforming Lives Another Warm Welcome
raised so far for the ride is £882. This brings the total raised so far to £1110 towards a tuktuk.
Another nice start to our meeting last month, when we formally welcomed Jackie into our club. As you may remember from our last update, Jackie was one of our intrepid cyclists who took to the peddles to raise money for the Tuk Tuk project. Jackie has a wealth of ideas for events to help others both locally and internationally - she is great example of Soroptimist ideals! We’ll be inviting you all to join us at these events in future editions. Think Pink Sri Lanka The Tuk Tuk project is travelling along very nicely now, particularly due to the sponsored cycle ride by Jackie and Kathy - the total

SOROPTIMISTS (cont) Looking Ahead We’re having a busy month in November and we will have lots to report next month. Kathy will be attending the Garstang Academy Award night on Wed 13th Nov, where we will discover which girl has won our Soroptimist cup and prize money for Scientific Endeavour. We’re really proud to encourage young women into the sciences and look forward to hearing from her at a future meeting. Our last year’s winner is well on her career path to becoming a vet. Good luck ladies! Our social event for this month will be a visit from My Pink Angel on Wed 27th Nov 7:00pm at Garstang Golf Club. This is a chance to view a collection of amazing scarfs and exquisite costume jewellery, accessories and more brought to us ready for Christmas. There will be demonstrations on the multitude ways to wear a scarf - which will definitely be of interest to me who inevitably just ties a knot (says Lesley) - at last to be shown how to be fashionable! Just think of all the Christmas shopping you can do without having to endure the crush of the High Street – please come along - all welcome. We’ll also give you an update on our Bournemouth conference next month, it was a busy event and it’s a tight deadline between getting home from it and submitting to press for this edition. Garstang Victorian Festival And now to the important news on our next event - it’s parched peas time again. Once more we’ll be stationed next to Iced (don’t forget to pop in to see them for their wonderful cake and hot chocolate) selling our famous peas at the Garstang Victorian Festival on Mon 9th and Tues 10th Dec. These always go down well and we always
sell out fast, so don’t hesitate - head to us first to save disappointment! All monies will go to our Tuk Tuk project, so you’ll be helping others whilst getting one of your five a day and this year we’ll also be offering some elegant home craft items for sale. We can’t wait to see you there. Please continue to drop off your used backpacks or other items at The Mustard Seed Café, Park Hill Road (opposite the Wheat Sheaf Pub). They are open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 10:00am to 2:00pm. Or ring us to arrange collection. Why not come and find out if you could make a difference? It could be the best thing you’ve ever done! We meet twice a month at the Garstang Hotel and Golf Club, at 7:00pm on the second and fourth Wednesday (excluding August and December). Interested ladies from throughout the Over Wyre and Garstang district are always very welcome. Please ring our membership co-ordinator Muriel BurnhamAirey (01995) 606604 to arrange to be met, or just come and introduce yourself. It has been some time since we arranged a further meet up with the Tinnitus Support Group. Apologies – we will be emailing those on the list who have previously left their contact details.
Come along and listen to Neil Hendry and his group who ask ‘Was Hauptmann Really Guilty of the Lindbergh Murder?’ then ask the club members (jury) was this the correct decision or was it a miscarriage of justice?
David and I are attending a conference organised by the BTA in Manchester on Sat 9th Nov. We hope to gain some further knowledge and experience of coping mechanisms and identifying anything new to the market which may render any assistance.
Why not join us and give us your view on Wed 13th Nov 2:00pm - 4:00pm at St Helen’s Church Hall, Churchtown.
We are also in contact with the British Tinnitus Association to hopefully secure a speaker at our next meeting which will be held on Tues 26th Nov 8:00pm at Garstang Library.
We welcome anyone who is either blind or has sight problems. We are a mixed, very friendly group and if you live in the Scorton, Garstang or Churchtown area we may be able to arrange free taxi transport to and from the meeting.
We hope previous and new members can come along on the night but if you require any further information in the meantime please do not hesitate to contact us.
Our following meeting will be on Wed 27th Nov. The programme is to be confirmed, but you can always have a natter with others over a cup of tea and biscuits.

CAT SMITH MP Hello everyone – I hope you all survived trick or treating and no doubt, as it’s the beginning of November, we’re just days away from being bombarded with Christmas adverts! Can I remind everyone as the social season kicks in that Blackpool Transport will continue to run the Saturday evening service – even though numbers have been low. Please consider using this service when planning your evenings out – I know I’m repeating myself but if we don’t use it we’ll lose it! Over the winter the 2C Sunday bus service will run every 90 minutes – I know this service has made a huge difference to those using it – and again, please take advantage of it as regularly as you can.
Unfortunately the end of September and for much of October it was very wet and we’ve once again experienced flooding, particularly in Pilling and Preesall. In Pilling, the children at St John’s School were having to pretty much wade through a river to get to their lessons and they spent the rest of the day very damp so it’s important that we tackle this problem and get it resolved. I’m really pleased that following these events the Environment Agency, United Utilities, Lancashire County Council and a representative from Wyre Borough Council met with residents and local Councillors to walk around the villages and across fields to share information and highlight where the dykes and gullies are blocked and causing problems. All of this information will be fed into the Making Space for Water programme which is responsible for developing the strategy for flood and coastal erosion risk management. I’m hopeful that agreed works in Pilling will prevent the area around the school from flooding in the future and that plans are now being put in place to minimise the damage in other residential areas like Sunnyside Cottages in Preesall. I’m really pleased that the Citizen’s Advice Bureau is now providing services in Knott End and Preesall. So often, those of us living in rural areas miss out on vital services. A great deal of work is going on behind the scenes to bring health services to the Over Wyre Medical Centre. In particular I’m keen to see children’s services like Speech and Language and Occupational Therapy integrated into the life of the Centre to avoid children having to travel across the Fylde Coast to access these life changing therapies. If you’d like advice from the Citizen’s Advice Bureau call 0344 245 1294 for details of when and where they are being held. One of the most interesting and unseen

CAT SMITH MP (cont) parts of my week are my regular advice surgeries for constituents. These one-to-one appointments used to be the only way people got the chance to speak with their MP but now I also offer telephone appointments and assist constituents over email too. And there are some who prefer a good old-fashioned letter – whatever way you want to contact me is fine and you will always get a response. My appointments-based meetings at my advice surgery cover a broad range of issues but one issue which sadly comes up time and again is to do with disabled constituents losing access to Personal Independence Payments (previously called Disability Living Allowance) and having to appeal decisions made by the Department for Work and Pensions. Most of the time it is blindingly obvious from the moment someone struggles into the room that they are disabled, perhaps living with chronic pain and in some cases relying on mobility aides to make the appointment. Almost all the people I have supported with appeals have gone on to win them.
without the financial support they needed. The Government must adopt a definition of terminal illness based on sound clinical judgements and scrap all unnecessary assessments for terminally ill people. I haven’t mentioned the ‘B’ word – circumstances change so quickly that between my writing this and you reading it, it’s likely everything to do with Brexit will have changed again. Keep your eyes on my website www.catsmith.co.uk and my social media for regular updates. I hope you enjoy the coming month. Please keep me up to date with your views and ideas. I’m always keen to hear from you. If you have issues you would like my help with then please email me cat.smith@ parliament.uk or call my office (01253) 490440 to make an appointment. Cat Smith MP
The appalling inaccuracies of Personal Independence Payment assessments are destroying disabled people’s lives and wasting huge amounts of public resources. Its exasperating that 73% of decisions are overturned when brought to appeal. That’s almost three-quarters of disabled people wrongly losing access to money they need for keeping a roof over their heads and food on the table. The result is people racking up debt whilst they wait for appeals to be heard. One of my saddest cases was a terminally ill constituent having their payments stopped. It’s just so wrong and worryingly more common than perhaps readers realise. Shamefully, between 2013 and 2018, 17,000 terminally ill people died while waiting for a decision on their PIP claims. This means people spent their last days waiting for the outcome of a cruel assessment

GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS Donations A decision was made to provide further support to Fylde Women’s Aid with a pledge of £200 towards purchasing some Christmas gifts to distribute to the different refuges in the area. There is a continued need for new clothing items (babies, small children or ladies), new toys, new cosmetics or new toiletries. This appeal is ongoing with our collection point being the Resources Centre (old Liberal Club on Bridge Street). Another delivery is planned to take place before Christmas. Events and Activities The next two months will be a very busy period for our members with a number of events being held that require our support. The Lions Bonfire and Firework Display will
be held on Sat 2nd Nov with the lighting of the fire planned for 7:00pm and a spectacular fireworks show to follow. Admission prices are being kept amazingly low at only £4 for adults; £2 for those of school age (up to 16) and pre-school ages being allowed free entry. Several members of the club will be acting as stewards to support both the Remembrance Sunday Parade on Sun 10th Nov and also the ‘switch on’ of the Garstang Christmas Lights on Mon 25th Nov. The club will once again be assisting in parking cars for the popular Myerscough 10 mile run on Sun 1st Dec. The Lions will be hosting their annual Mencap Christmas Lunch on Sun 8th Dec at the Wyrebank Banqueting Suite. Planning has begun for this already with 120 expected to attend. Arrival from 12:00 noon onwards. As usual the Lions will be assisting Santa Claus at the Garstang Victorian Festival on 9th and 10th Dec. Please watch out for and visit our Grotto which will be outside the Kings Arms Public House. Our club continues to expand with yet another new member being inducted at our last meeting. If you want to add your name to this growing list then you would be very welcome to join us. Further information is available on the web site at www.garstanglions.co.uk You can speak to any member about what we do or just come along to our meetings held on the third Tuesday of the month in the Royal Oak at 8:00pm. INNER WHEEL Garstang & Over Wyre The Club would like to thank the good people of Garstang and beyond for their generosity in supporting two charity fundraising events. Both the Trolley Dash, a joint venture with Rotary and the Evening of Fun, Flowers and Food were incredibly successful. A big thank you to Booths and also other Garstang businesses for their generosity and support. Looking forward our next fundraiser has an International theme. Any money raised on that night will go to Mercy Ships. Mercy ships bring vital medical treatment to otherwise inaccessible areas in Africa. Our Club President, Maureen Garstang, together with other members will have the privilege of laying a wreath at the War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday.
We now have Christmas cards, diaries and calendars for sale. BEN WALLACE MP As I write this article, I can hear the rain pouring down outside. Whenever I hear torrential rain, I think of my constituents in areas which are prone to flooding . I study the flood alerts I receive from the Environment Agency to ensure I have the latest information. Lancashire seems to get more than its fair share of rain and I know this latest bad weather has affected many residents. As a result I have recently visited Kiln Lane in Hambleton, which flooded at the end of September, to speak to residents and local Wyre and County Councillors to try to address the issues. I am to convene a meeting with the Area Director of the Environment Agency to discuss this and the many issues relating to flooding throughout the constituency. I do think we are fortunate here in Wyre to have so many active Flood Action Groups and a Flood Forum which ensures all agencies speak to each other. I am pleased to be represented at the Flood Forum by a member of my staff. He also drives around the constituency when flooding is forecast to check on local communities and keep an eye on river levels on my behalf. All this information helps me make informed representations to the local agencies responsible for dealing with flooding. Due to the wet weather, surface water has been an issue on local roads and in many areas the highway drains have not coped well. If you do know a drain which blocks regularly in your area, you can report it to LCC by visiting: www.lancashire.gov.uk/ roads-parking-and-travel/report-it/ With knife crime continuing to be a great concern throughout the country, I had the honour recently to meet a former world

champion boxer trying to make a difference. Robin Reid (The Reaperman) and Stu Maddox, former local Boxer, came to see me at a recent surgery to talk about the Safety Guide Foundation, which they support. The foundation was created to help raise the awareness of social issues through a range of individual booklets supporting personal and social development. These range from drugs and alcohol, bullying, knife crime to road safety. If you would like to find out more please visit www.safetyguide.co.uk I was delighted to learn that Lancashire County Council has recently introduced measures making it easier for us to recycle more plastic waste. Residents can now put clean plastic pots, tubs and trays in our recycling bins at home for collection. Read more here: www.lancashire.gov.uk/wasteand-recycling/lancashire-recycles/ Harder to recycle products, such as tetra pak cartons, are accepted at the County Council’s Household Waste and Recycling Centres. More details can be found here: http://bit.ly/ waste-recycle-centre In recent months I have had a new issue raised by constituents from areas across the constituency: water in the gas supply. In all my years as your local MP, I do not recall this being reported to me before, but I have had three separate reports since last year. If you do encounter this problem you should contact

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) Cadent in the first instance. I’m happy to help if the matter is not resolved swiftly. Cadent maintains and repairs gas pipes in the network and connects and alters gas connections for homes and businesses. Cadent is also responsible for emergency operations on the network. They don’t produce gas or own the gas that runs through the network – that is the gas supplier. So if you encounter water in your gas supply call their customer serves team on 0345 835 1111. If you smell gas call their emergency number on 0800 111 999. You can find out more about Cadent here: https://cadentgas. com/home We are fast approaching November (and dare I say it Christmas already)! I enjoy this time of year – when it isn’t too wet, of course – relaxing Autumnal walks and seeing the leaves on the trees turning beautiful shades of red, orange and brown. However, I also know that as Bonfire Night approaches many pet owners start to feel anxious about how their animals will react to noisy fireworks. Please be mindful of this if you are planning to set off fireworks at home. You may also want to read the safety tips issued by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (www.rospa.com/ Home-Safety/Advice/Fireworks-Safety) to ensure that your night is as enjoyable and trouble-free as possible.
I continue to meet residents at my advice surgeries to discuss a wide range of issues. Please remember if you would like to attend one of my surgeries, the most effective way to contact me is by email, with a brief description of the issues you wish to raise and your contact details. It is worth bearing in mind that I can often offer assistance without the need for a meeting. As in previous months national issues continue to fill my mailbag, please remember I am here to represent you and your views are important to me so please keep them coming. If I can be of any assistance to you please ring my Office at the House of Commons on 0207 219 5804 or my Constituency Office on (01995) 672976, email me at wallaceb@ parliament.uk or write to me at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA. Ben Wallace MP
During recent walkabouts within the constituency I have enjoyed talking to residents while they are going about their daily business and finding out what matters to them a daily basis. Sometimes I think with everything that is going on nationally sometimes, these issue can be overlooked. I intend to continue to visit towns and villages within the constituency whenever possible and please remember, do contact my office if you would like me to visit your business, charity etc.

The second prepared speech demonstrated ‘Use of Visual Aids’. Its title was ‘Cheap as Chips’. The theme behind the speech was potatoes - the different types you can get, various ways of cooking them. The history of this versatile vegetable was also discussed. Topics Session The Chair for the Topics Session had chosen the theme ‘Vegetables’. From carrots and leeks to tomatoes and beetroot, we heard speakers’ views as to their liking or not, growing of and usage of these different vegetables. Humour abounded! The Evaluators of the main speeches and topics pointed out areas of good practice and suggested areas where the speakers could improve their presentations. The General Evaluator outlined various aspects of a very enjoyable evening and offered some very worthwhile comments on the Evaluators of the main speeches. On Wed 9th 0ct, again two members gave prepared 6 - 8 minute speeches on subjects of their own choosing. ‘Preparation for Long Distance Walking’, demonstrating particularly the use of gestures, was about preparing for a 36-hour walk from Glasgow to Edinburgh. It outlined trials and tribulations, including problems with blisters and clothing challenges. The second speech of the evening, ‘The Weather Tomorrow’, demonstrated the assignment ‘Speaking Without Notes’. The speaker made good use of visual aids such as a barometer, vegetables, maps and a bottle of beer to explain weather conditions in Lancashire, specifically locally. The veracity of some folklore was also examined which resulted in plenty of audience rapport. (Always a good thing in speaking!)
Both speeches were evaluated so the speakers had good feedback. In the Topics session, members were given subjects which included ‘Your Ambitions and Dreams As a Teenager,’ ‘How Did your Parents/Grandparents Influence You?’, ‘What Gift or Talent do You Wish You Had?’ The subjects were thought to be quite challenging but everyone coped and kept talking for nearly three minutes. The Club meets at Hollins Lane Methodist Church Schoolroom, Forton, PR3 0AB on most second and fourth Wednesdays from Sept to May. Shingles can be very painful and tends to affect people more commonly as they get older. You are eligible for the shingles vaccine if you are aged 70 or 78 years old, were previously eligible but missed immunisation. People aged 80 years and over are not eligible for the vaccine because it becomes less effective as you get older. Please contact our reception team on

GARSTANG LADIES SPEAKERS Garstang Ladies Speakers Club can provide the opportunity to improve your speaking and listening skills and help build your confidence for any occasion.
The venue has proved to be a great success and has attracted a good many entries – some even from Halifax! We expect to get close to the limit of 400 entries. If it goes over then there might be a late ordering of extra cheese! Maybe the success of the race is also partly due to the Sandham’s cheeses given out to finishers at the end of the race! The race starts at 10:00am and the carpark will be open from 8:00am onwards. Once again the club is grateful for the help of The Garstang Lions for directing traffic into the carpark. The race headquarters is the Equestrian Centre with its excellent catering facilities – nothing like a bacon butty after a hard run or an hour or so of marshalling! As usual the route will be well marked and well marshalled – just like all our races. Hopefully there won’t be a repeat of the hanky-panky at the recent half marathon race when someone kindly moved some arrows around before the
The Club meets at 7:15pm for 7:30pm in the comfortable surroundings of the Garstang Country Hotel and Golf Club on the first and third Tuesday of each month from September to May.
