OVER WYRE ART SOCIETY It’s been a busy few weeks for us artists! With the demonstration of a seascape of Sunderland Point, Harry Caunce followed on with a full day workshop giving the keen ones a chance to produce a quality quick drying oil painting. Everyone rose to the challenge with some startling results. On our free painting days, the members have the opportunity to leisurely help each other and progress their work with encouragement from their peers. In contrast the controlled pen and wash demonstration with John Harrison showed us the appeal of a simple sketch with limited colour with impressive results. Of course the composition, accuracy of drawing and tonal values are paramount. A workshop was arranged for more practise. We had a busy morning hanging the paintings in Knott End Library. Lots of helpers gave their input and help. We hope you liked our Autumn Exhibition which was extended for another week. We’re now following on with watercolour practise which is the most popular medium. Later this month we can also experiment with Chinese brush painting, not often accessible but very effective. Due to the sale of a few books and donated items, we now have new plastic table covers keeping our ‘studio’ clean. NATURAL IMMUNE BOOSTS Did you know there is no hard evidence as to how we ‘catch’ a cold. Time and again in studies immunologists admit their understanding of how viruses are transmitted is extremely limited. A quote from a workshop held by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in November 2010 states, ‘Despite numerous studies... the predominant mode or modes of transmission of influenza between humans remain to be clearly documented.’ Of course there are theories about sneezing and coughing etc but no actual evidence to support them. So what is going on here? Well I suspect that the situation is not so black and white because your body has a whole host of defences to stop us ‘catching a cold’. Our skin is remarkably effective as a barrier to viruses, our nose has mucus and hairs to capture anything we may inhale and our

18

mouth has saliva that is both antibacterial and antiviral. If all of these factors are firing effectively then we are protected and that is before we take into account our internal immune system that is working all the time to keep bacteria, viruses and injuries at bay. Further evidence for this complex situation is that at any one time we have around 400 viruses in our body yet we are not ill. We have such an array of defences it is actually very hard for us to catch anything that will make us ill. I saw the NHS advert for staying well in the winter recently and it tells us to get a flu jab and visit a pharmacy. Really? That is how we stay well? Pharmacists are experts in pharmaceuticals, they are not necessarily health experts. In fact, you do not need to be an expert to be healthy and avoid illness in the winter. All you need to do is make sure you protect yourself

Do not underestimate the power of rest. You do not need to take suppressing medications to carry on, this leads to trouble further down the line, just rest and keep hydrated. Limit alcohol intake. Have you ever overindulged for a day or two then come down with a cold? That happens because you have assaulted your body’s defences and your body has to go into cleansing mode which is sneezing, coughing and eyes streaming. We call it a cold but it is actually a ‘cleansing’. Get fresh air every day and avoid being in constant central heating which dries out all your mucus membranes which are part of your first line of defence. Look after your digestive system which is vital for healthy immune system function. Simple

ways to help this are to avoid processed foods, eat real whole foods and limit sugar. Eating fermented foods such as kefir, kimchi or sauer kraut is also excellent and in the absence of these take a high quality probiotic. Most modern food is lacking in many important minerals and vitamins due to the soil being so depleted from intensive farming so a good multivitamin is worth taking regularly. I’d also suggest taking some cannabinoids every now and then from a high quality CBD product. This is a minefield due to the vast array of dodgy products out there but there are good brands about. Cannabinoids help your body to maintain a healthy balance regardless of our environment. The best way to not be ill is to be healthy and you have more control over that than the medical system would have you believe. Nick Tofalos (01995) 918718

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Over Wyre Branch October’s meeting was the end of year Branch Annual General Meeting. Members reflected on the achievements of the past Legion year which, when added together, showed that there had been quite a lot for a Branch with so very few members. We had representation at several Galas and Fetes in the area. At Preesall Gala a member’s vehicle was RBL decorated and it won 3rd place in the entered category. The Branch President was awarded Lancashire Individual Fundraiser of the year and the Over Wyre Poppy Appeal was increased by £2784.25p over the previous year.

28

The Branch was represented at the Annual Lancashire County Conference where, for the first time ever, we were awarded third place in the George Haffner Poppy Appeal category. We were represented at the RBL Annual National Conference where the Branch had several motions included in the agenda. We participated in the Preesall Town Council ‘Battle’s Over’ Commemoration and Beacon Lighting evening as well as the Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service. We were also the nominated charity of the year at the St. Aidan’s College Remembrance Dinner. A Coach trip to the National Memorial Arboretum was organised and the Branch held two dinners during the year. So – overall – a good result for so few members.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION (cont) The AGM also sees the election of Officers and Committee members for 2019/20 Legion Year where we had to accept the resignation of the Branch Treasurer, to whom all members would like to express their very grateful thanks for all the years that he has guided the Branch through good and bad financial times. Good wishes for the future from all. Poppy Appeal 2019/20 All the Poppy Appeal collecting boxes and poppies were distributed on Tues 15th Oct. We will be contacting those who had Poppy Remembrance Wreaths last year during the week beginning 28th Oct for distribution beginning week 4th Nov. Let’s hope that we will be reporting on an even more successful Poppy Appeal in the December edition of Focus and a pre-Poppy Appeal thankyou to all those who donate.

I would like to point out that any ex-Service persons or families who have been victims of the recent flooding should contact me as they may be eligible for RBL assistance in helping them get back to leading their normal lives. The next meeting of the Over Wyre Royal British Legion Branch will be on Thurs 14th Nov in the Preesall Youth and Community Centre at 2:30pm. Remember you do not have to have served in the British Armed Forces to become a member. Live On – To the Memory of the Fallen and the Future of the Living – Live On. Remember Together. You can be assured that the money that you donate is put to very, very good use in helping those who have or are serving in the Armed Forces. Remembrance Sunday Service Sun 10th Nov.

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE Let’s Get Creative Art and creativity as a means for improving health and wellbeing has been recognized for centuries. It has been shown to combat isolation, release stress and lower anxiety and has the ability to reach out to people of all ages from all walks of life. In history, Florence Nightingale described ‘variety of form and brilliancy of colour…. are an actual means of recovery’ correlating exposure to art to improvement in health. In modern times, clinical studies have linked involvement in art to a reduction in cortisol levels (stress hormones). Wyre Council have been commissioned to bring a range of art and events to our doorstep at Over Wyre Medical Centre. The Art and Events team at the Council are already present in libraries and other venues across the Fylde coast but are very enthusiastic about having a strong presence

Over Wyre as a means of reducing loneliness, encouraging socialisation and improving our mental health. So we welcome them and Over Wyre residents with open arms to get involved with this fantastic initiative! On Thurs 7th Nov 2:00pm - 4:00pm there will be a Poppy Making Session to mark Remembrance Day. Bring an old shirt! There are also lots of other planned events that will be advertised at the Medical Centre and in this book. The first of these is a project called Chatawayz. This will be a fun based project encouraging memory sharing and recording cherished times. Music and song, art, poetry and reenactment will be used to bring memories to life. There will also be opportunities during the holidays for grandparents and grandchildren to join in together! The Chatawayz themes include, schooldays, home life, work and leisure time. If you need further information, Chris Wyatt from the Arts and Events team invites you to call him to find out more. Call (01253) 887450. Christmas Day in the Front Room As some of you will know, The Front Room at the Over Wyre Medical Centre has hosted two wonderful events this year. The first was for its grand opening in May broadcast by Lancashire TV and Granada Reports. The second was our MacMillan Coffee morning in September. Both events were bustling and it was a pleasure to see the community coming together. We will be hosting our next event on Thurs 19th Dec between 12 noon and 4:00pm and refer to it as ‘Christmas Day in the Front Room’. There will be music and laughter, mince pies and refreshments with bucket loads of Christmas spirit! Saturday Opening The Saturday morning doctor and nurse surgeries have been well utilised and are

Hello everyone – I hope you all survived trick or treating and no doubt, as it’s the beginning of November, we’re just days away from being bombarded with Christmas adverts! Can I remind everyone as the social season kicks in that Blackpool Transport have agreed to continue to run the Saturday evening service – even though numbers have been low. Please consider using this service when planning your evenings out – I know I’m repeating myself but if we don’t use it we’ll lose it! Over the winter the 2C Sunday bus service will run every 90 minutes – I know this service has made a huge difference to those using it – and again, please take advantage of it as regularly as you can. Unfortunately the end of September and for much of October it was very wet and we’ve once again experienced flooding, particularly in Pilling and Preesall. In Pilling, the children at St John’s School were having to pretty much wade through a river to get to their lessons and they spent the rest of the day very damp so it’s important that we tackle this problem and get it resolved. I’m really pleased that following these events the Environment Agency, United Utilities, Lancashire County Council and a representative from Wyre Borough Council met with residents and local Councillors to walk around the villages and across fields to highlight where the dykes and gullies are blocked and causing problems. All of this information will be fed into the Making Space for Water programme which is responsible for developing the strategy for flood and coastal erosion risk management. I’m hopeful that agreed works in Pilling will

CAT SMITH MP (cont) prevent the area around the school from flooding in the future and that plans are now being put in place to minimise the damage in other residential areas like Sunnyside Cottages in Preesall. I’m really pleased that the Citizen’s Advice Bureau is now providing services in Knott End and Preesall. So often, those of us living in rural areas miss out on vital services. A great deal of work is going on behind the scenes to bring health services to the Over Wyre Medical Centre. In particular I’m keen to see children’s services like Speech and Language and Occupational Therapy integrated into the life of the Centre to avoid children having to travel across the Fylde Coast to access these life changing therapies. If you’d like advice from the Citizen’s Advice Bureau call 0344 245 1294 for details of when and where they are being held. One of the most interesting and unseen parts of my week are my regular advice surgeries for constituents. These one-to-one appointments used to be the only way people got the chance to speak with their MP but now I also offer telephone appointments and assist constituents over email too. And there are some who prefer a good old-fashioned letter – whatever way you want to contact me is fine and you will always get a response. My appointments-based meetings at my advice surgery cover a broad range of issues but one issue which sadly comes up time and again is to do with disabled constituents losing access to Personal Independence Payments (previously called Disability Living Allowance) and having to appeal decisions made by the Department for Work and Pensions. Most of the time it is blindingly obvious from the moment someone struggles into the room that they are disabled, perhaps living with chronic pain and in some cases relying on mobility aides to make the appointment. Almost all the people I have supported with

appeals have gone on to win them. The appalling inaccuracies of Personal Independence Payment assessments are destroying disabled people’s lives and wasting huge amounts of public resources. Its exasperating that 73% of decisions are overturned when brought to appeal. That’s almost three-quarters of disabled people wrongly losing access to money they need for keeping a roof over their heads and food on the table. The result is people racking up debt whilst they wait for appeals to be heard. One of my saddest cases was a terminally ill constituent having their payments stopped. It’s just so wrong and worryingly more common than perhaps readers realise. Shamefully, between 2013 and 2018, 17,000 terminally ill people died while waiting for a decision on their PIP claims. This means people spent their last days

waiting for the outcome of a cruel assessment without the financial support they needed. The Government must adopt a definition of terminal illness based on sound clinical judgements and scrap all unnecessary assessments for terminally ill people.

Rehearsals are well underway for our next concert, Christmas Extravaganza, on Sat 7th Dec at 2:30pm in St Oswald’s Church.

I haven’t mentioned the ‘B’ word – circumstances change so quickly that between my writing this and you reading it, it’s likely everything to do with Brexit will have changed again. Keep your eyes on my website www.catsmith.co.uk and my social media for regular updates.

We will be singing a varied programme, one which is quite challenging for the choir! We hope we have included something for all to enjoy. Please watch out for our posters etc which will be appearing in due course. The Choir continues to attract new members but we always have room for more. Any one thinking they might like to sing in a community choir is welcome to come along to one of our rehearsals, Thursdays at 7:30pm in St Oswald’s Church Hall. Meet the members, have a listen and perhaps you will decide to join us. You will have a warm welcome. No auditions!

I hope you enjoy the coming month. Please keep me up to date with your views and ideas. I’m always keen to hear from you. If you have issues you would like my help with then please email me cat.smith@parliament.uk or call my office (01253) 490440 to make an appointment.

So, put a date in your diary for Sat 7th and get into the Christmas spirit!

THE MOON CHARITABLE TRUST The R.V., E. & H. Moon Charitable Trust was set up by Mrs Edith Moon, who lived in Lancaster Road, Pilling. Articles in Focus in previous years have invited grant applications from local charities and the Trustees have made a further thirty awards last year to local charities in the Pilling and surrounding areas. In a few months’ time, the Trustees will be considering making a further round of grants from the Charity. Applications for grants are invited now, therefore, from Pilling, Knott End, Stalmine, Preesall, Hambleton and surrounding areas, from local charitable groups. Previous applicants will be considered and applicants do not need to be registered charities as long as their objectives are of a charitable nature. Grants will generally be between £500 and £1,000, though larger sums may be awarded in suitable cases.

If any group would wish to apply for a grant, application should be made to the correspondent of the Charity: Linder Myers, Solicitors, 21-23 Park Street, Lytham, FY8 5LU (01253) 684575 (Sue Walker), requesting a Grant Application Form. The Application Form should be completed and returned by 15th April 2020. Sue Walker (01253) 684575

BEN WALLACE MP As I write this article, I can hear the rain pouring down outside. Whenever I hear torrential rain, I think of my constituents in areas which are prone to flooding . I study the flood alerts I receive from the Environment Agency to ensure I have the latest information. Lancashire seems to get more than its fair share of rain and I know this latest bad weather has affected many residents. As a result I have recently visited Kiln Lane in Hambleton, which flooded at the end of September, to speak to residents and local Wyre and County Councillors to try to address the issues. I am to convene a meeting with the Area Director of the Environment Agency to discuss this and the many issues relating to

flooding throughout the constituency. I do think we are fortunate here in Wyre to have so many active Flood Action Groups and a Flood Forum which ensures all agencies speak to each other. I am pleased to be represented at the Flood Forum by a member of my staff. He also drives around the constituency when flooding is forecast to check on local communities and keep an eye on river levels on my behalf. All this information helps me make informed representations to the local agencies responsible for dealing with flooding. Due to the wet weather, surface water has been an issue on local roads and in many areas the highway drains have not coped well. If you do know a drain which blocks regularly in your area, you can report it to LCC by visiting: www.lancashire.gov.uk/ roads-parking-and-travel/report-it/ With knife crime continuing to be a great

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) my years as your local MP, I do not recall this being reported to me before, but I have had three separate reports since last year. If you do encounter this problem you should contact Cadent in the first instance. I’m happy to help if the matter is not resolved swiftly. Cadent maintains and repairs gas pipes in the network and connects and alters gas connections for homes and businesses. Cadent is also responsible for emergency operations on the network. They don’t produce gas or own the gas that runs through the network – that is the gas supplier. So if you encounter water in your gas supply call their customer serves team on 0345 835 1111. If you smell gas call their emergency number on 0800 111 999. You can find out more about Cadent here: https://cadentgas. com/home We are fast approaching November (and dare I say it Christmas already)! I enjoy this

time of year – when it isn’t too wet, of course – relaxing Autumnal walks and seeing the leaves on the trees turning beautiful shades of red, orange and brown. However, I also know that as Bonfire Night approaches many pet owners start to feel anxious about how their animals will react to noisy fireworks. Please be mindful of this if you are planning to set off fireworks at home. You may also want to read the safety tips issued by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (www.rospa.com/ Home-Safety/Advice/Fireworks-Safety) to ensure that your night is as enjoyable and trouble-free as possible. During recent walkabouts within the constituency I have enjoyed talking to residents while they are going about their daily business and finding out what matters to them a daily basis. Sometimes I think with everything that is going on nationally

RSPCA (cont) Found Cat Do you recognise this cat? He has been frequenting the area of Cockerham for the last few weeks and getting into trouble with the neighbourhood cats! We initially thought he may have been a feral cat so trapped him with the plan of neutering and ear clipping him before returning him to the area. However he actually seems like a sweet natured cat, just a little nervous so he may have had a home at some point before possibly becoming lost. James, as he has been named by the staff, is not neutered, not wearing a collar and isn’t microchipped. If you

SOROPTIMISTS (cont) Looking Ahead We’re having a busy month in November and we will have lots to report next month. Kathy will be attending the Garstang Academy Award night on Wed 13th Nov, where we will discover which girl has won our Soroptimist cup and prize money for Scientific Endeavour. We’re really proud to encourage young women into the sciences and look forward to hearing from her at a future meeting. Our last year’s winner is well on her career path to becoming a vet. Good luck ladies! Our social event for this month will be a visit from My Pink Angel on Wed 27th Nov 7:00pm at Garstang Golf Club. This is a chance to view a collection of amazing scarfs and exquisite costume jewellery, accessories and more brought to us ready for Christmas. There will be demonstrations on the multitude ways to wear a scarf - which will definitely be of interest to me who inevitably just ties a knot (says Lesley) - at last to be shown how to be fashionable! Just think of all the Christmas shopping you can do without having to endure the crush of the High Street – please come along - all welcome. We’ll also give you an update on our Bournemouth conference next month, it was a busy event and it’s a tight deadline between getting home from it and submitting to press for this edition. MACHU PICCHU TREK CHALLENGE job of providing care and support for children with terminal and life limiting conditions.

October 2020 Following the success of our 2018 Great Wall of China Trek Challenge, we are very excited to be now taking part in the Machu Picchu Challenge in October 2020! This incredible trek will take us through the untouched Lares region of Peru, over high mountain passes with views of the snowcapped Andes, green valleys and tranquil mountain lakes. Our Machu Picchu Challenge is again being undertaken on behalf of Brian House Children’s Hospice, which does an amazing

They receive no funding from the Government so have to constantly fund raise in order to provide this invaluable service. It costs £3,500 per day for them to be able to provide care for children and their families, and as we are self-funding this trip, all money raised will go directly to Brian House. Our first fundraising event is an auction of art masterpieces all of which have been created and kindly donated by members of the Over Wyre Art Society, for which we are very grateful. The display of this artwork is taking place from Mon 11th Nov until Sat 16th Nov at The Cottage Loaf, Knott End, where you can place as many blind bids as you wish for each masterpiece. The highest bid made for each piece of work wins that picture and all winners will be announced at The Cottage Loaf on Sat 16th Nov. All money raised at this Auction will go directly into our fundraising pot. We managed to raise in excess of £5,000 on our Great Wall of China Trek which was absolutely amazing and we would be delighted to match or even surpass this amount this time, if possible. All donations, no matter how small will be gratefully received and we have again set up a fundraising page where donations can be made online at: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rosinaphilip-lawrinson-chettoe or you can sponsor us by completing one of our sponsorship forms which we are more than happy to bring to you if that is more convenient. STALMINE PRIMARY SCHOOL We have had a very busy first half term at Stalmine School! We have welcomed a full cohort of reception children and some new pupils throughout school. Lots of our children have already been taking part in many different events in and out of school. Our school football team stormed to victory in their first match winning 4-3 and are training hard with Mr McShane for their upcoming matches. Years 1 and 2 are the first class to have their weekly swimming lessons at Poulton YMCA this term and will be followed later in the year by EYFS and the junior children. Our new After School Clubs are also up and running, with childcare available for all year groups from Nursery to Year 6 until at least 5:00pm each night. The majority of the clubs are currently free of charge and include fabulous experiences for our children such as Forest School, learning about the outdoors with a fully trained forest school leader, and drumming led by Lancashire Music Service. In September, a group of our children were lucky enough to be able to participate in the FAM Festival held at the Winter Gardens. They worked really hard to learn the songs involved and the experience of singing with the West End star, Ben Forster, alongside a live band and schools from across the local area in such an impressive venue was something they will never forget. We were proud to be the only Over Wyre school involved (and to be sat on the front row!). We held a Teddy Bears’ Picnic for our Early Years children and parents. We were very lucky to have beautiful weather. A fun afternoon was had by all with picnic food made by the children, games on the field and stories from our Year 6 buddies. Our Early Years team have also been awarded the Lancashire Quality Award for Pedagogy building on the Quality Award and Maths

fundraising, we have set a good example as staff this half term too. On Fri 27th Sept we hosted a Macmillan Coffee Morning, raising a fantastic £171. We have also hosted a Wear It Pink day for Breast Cancer Care.

We are now looking forward to our Harvest festival, after which our School Council members will deliver hampers to members of our community. There are lots more planned for next half term including Halloween parties, Community Lunch, Lantern making, Bonfire Forest School Sessions and Christmas celebrations!

ST AIDAN’S NEWS What a busy half term it has been. We’re now halfway through the Autumn Term and there’s so much news from October to share! We have done so much fundraising. From staff to pupils and money to food, we have really worked hard this half term to help others.

We had a multitude of activities, including a fruit stall, where pupils received free fruit if they could ask for it in German, French or Spanish, and even a Bake Off competition. We had a brilliant 18 cakes created by pupils from a mixture of year groups and these ranged from world map cakes to a selfstanding Berlin Wall cake! The European Day of Languages is a fantastic way of having fun with other languages and cultures.

Firstly, we had the Autumn Harvest. This consists of each tutor group across the school bringing in as much food as they can to contribute to our chosen food banks. This year we chose Forest Gate Baptist Church, Street Life, Vincent House, the Olive Branch and the Trussell Trust. These places provide food for those in times of need and we managed to arrange over 60 boxes of food to send out. Our Non-uniform Day on Fri 11th Oct raised £800 for our school charities. With extra donations we were able to give £100 each to Cancer Research, Breast Cancer Now, Trinity Hospice, Shelter Box, Happy House, South African Schools Project, Milly’s Smiles, RSPCA, British Legion and Just One Tree. Speaking of the Modern Foreign Languages Department, I am also excited to discuss our forthcoming Berlin trip with you.

The school year has started really well with our families thoroughly supportive of the work that we are doing. Our attendance rate for this year so far is over 98% - something to be really proud of.

Thirty five budding Year 10 and 11 linguists are going to be testing their knowledge of German language, whilst submersed in German culture. On the trip, pupils will have the opportunity to see famous and historically crucial monuments, such as the Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Wall, the Reichstag and a personal favourite of mine , he DDR Museum. Naturally, as I am the trip leader, there will be time for shopping too! Coming up in our next report - a full rundown of our trip to Berlin and much more! Until then, keep an eye on our twitter page @ SaintAidansCEHS for any updates. Chloe Butler (01253) 810504

We welcomed 29 new faces into our Reception class this year. They have moved on to us from many of our local nurseries and pre-school groups. However, another family joined us with two children higher up the school with a slightly bigger move: they have moved from the wild plains of Texas to the nearly wild moss lands of Pilling Lane! Our children have welcomed all of our new starters and they all feel like Carter’s is home! We welcomed a large number of families of children getting ready for starting school next year around school on Open Day and on other days recently. If you are still to make up your mind about the next step on your child’s journey, please get in touch and we would love to show you round. At the other end of the school, our Year 6 children and families have made their applications for their high school of choice. They will find out in March which ‘bigger’ school they will be going to. We support a range of charities and events over the course of year and have just had a fundraising day for the Alopecia Awareness charity with one of our new starters having this condition. We will be joining in as usual with the BBC’s Children in Need and are looking at having a ‘blue’ day in January to raise awareness of Diabetes. Two of our children have this debilitating condition and it is good for the whole school to appreciate the background and effects that it has day to day. Over the last 12 months we have been one of our local Co-Op stores’ chosen causes and I would like to say a big thank you to everyone

CARTER’S NEWS (cont) for their support. As of writing this article, we had raised over £1500! Our aim is to enhance our outdoor learning with the installation of an all-weather track around the field. We will still have to do some fundraising, but we are well on the way after this year. The Co-Op has been a tremendous support to what we do in school and we are very grateful for that and know we can look forward to the partnership continuing into the future. The Carter’s family also welcomes volunteers into school on a regular and recurring basis. We have a number of people who regularly contribute to children’s learning and development across the whole school. If you would like to volunteer or would just like to see if volunteering might be for you, please do get in touch and come in and have a chat. Brendan Hassett - Head Teacher (01253) 810236

Earth moves. We had a fantastic visit from scientist Dr. Chris Gaffney who answered the children’s cosmic questions and talked about his work sending worms into space to investigate muscle weakness in astronauts; a problem we’ll need to solve if we are to travel to Mars. The children were a credit to their school and parents when they visited Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre learning about space and the Lovell telescope. To begin our Plastic Free School mission, we have been picking up plastic and recycling rubbish in the Knott End Beach Clean. Our footballers have competed well in the Wyre Football League held at Poolfoot Farm. The whole team’s sportsmanship and attitude has been fantastic. We are so proud of how they represent our school. Our Year 6 have enjoyed a Quidditch Day this half term using skills learned in our PE lesson and applying then to a new game.

NEWS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL Fleetwood’s Charity Preschool & School Our Open Day was a great success with many families joining us to experience what we have to offer: from our stay and play session, to our Forest activities and to seeing our Family Groups in action putting together our Harvest Boxes for those less fortunate than ourselves in hospital. We are so pleased with how all the new members of Ash Class have settled into our school family. We have completed so many fun things this half term linked to our topic ‘Rumble in the Jungle’. We have also had a visit to the Life Education Centre and learned about our bodies and how to keep them healthy. We have been extremely creative and made fruit and vegetables out of clay! This comes after the occupants of a property adjoining Stalmine Wood left what they trimmed off in the wood without asking the council, as the landowner, if it wanted the cut material.

Wood All-Clear Wyre’s tree officer has completed his annual survey of Stalmine Wood and declared there are no issues requiring urgent attention.

As the council had not been contacted and had not therefore indicated it wanted the cuttings left in the wood, leaving them in the wood could be classed as fly-tipping.

Over the last few years, flooding caused by extreme rainfall has become a bigger issue in Lancashire and across the country. Heavy rain has had a devastating impact where people have had to leave their homes and seen valuables destroyed by flood water. Hambleton, in recent weeks, has been victim to such problems. Here are some things that you can do now to help reduce the risk to your home or, if such a flood occurs, may limit the impact. •

Get Home Insurance - Flood Re is a joint initiative between the Government and insurers. Its aim is to make the flood cover part of household insurance policies more affordable see www. floodre.co.uk

More details of the award and a nomination form can be found on the Council’s website under the ‘information’ tab or from the clerk at the address below. Dementia Friend Preesall Town Council has decided to sign up to become a dementia-friendly organisation. The Council’s health leads are looking at how this will best work in practice. The aim is to ensure that the community is a place where people with dementia and their carers are empowered, supported and included in society, understand their rights and recognise their full potential. Grants Advice At its meeting in November the Council will begin to determine its budget for the financial year beginning next April. Organisations considering applying for a grant from the Council are therefore advised to apply soon, so the Council has an idea of what sums might be required for its grants programme. PILLING NEW COMMUNITY HALL

Cllr Nicola Pattrick - (01253) 986820

We continue to make good progress towards a new Community Hall in Pilling with over 100 ‘bricks’ sold. This means that over the past month we have raised over two thousand pounds in donations! What an amazing amount.

This is a public meeting and residents are welcome. An opportunity to raise matters is available. We would also like to thank local businesses and organisations for their support and generous donations. Watch out for future fundraising events and show your support for this truly exciting project. I was inspired on a recent trip to Liverpool’s Roman Catholic Cathedral to read how funds were raised for this magnificent building. A local newspaper editor told how it was done and, at the opening ceremony, the following was read out: ‘They did it by touting the streets and pubs and knocking on doors like their own. They did it, bless ‘em, by giving when they had so little to give. They did it with dolls and raffle tickets. They did it with pools and bingo. They did it with socials and tired old men standing outside churches In the wet with a bit of a box in their hand. They did it with silver paper and tuppeny legacies. They did it with cigarettes and Green Shield Stamps. They did it with old newspapers and wedding rings, with treasured heirlooms and bits of this and that. They did it. And today is their day.’ Norman Cresswell I am sure that the people of Pilling will have their day also when our hall is finally opened. If you would like to contribute in any way, either by buying a brick or making a donation, please contact me. Katrina Bell (01253) 790649 katrinambell@hotmail.com
