This time of the year can be an emotional and stressful time for everyone. Besides Christmas shopping, it is a time of excitement, reflection and togetherness. However, some of you may feel as though you are alone, but that does not need to be the case, for as part of our Outreach within our community we wish you to know that we are here for you. If you know of a relative or friend who is in Hospital and has nobody to visit them, then why not let us know, so that we can try to arrange someone to pop in and have a chat with them at visiting hours. This offer is open to both Christians and non-Christians, just a friendly face to say hello. There are a few events occurring at the Church and Church Hall during the run-up to the festive period. Meeting Point meets here as well as our weekly coffee mornings which are held every Wednesday 10:30am till 12 noon. Do you feel lonely, bored or want some company? Then, just come along and join us for a brew and chat. Also, as part of our Advent season, we are holding Taize Prayer meetings, held on Sun 8th & 22nd Dec at 3:00pm. Come and join us. This month’s Soup & Cake luncheon will be held on Sat 14th Dec 12 noon till 1:00pm. Cost is just £3. Finally, let us at Hambleton United Reformed Church wish you, your family and friends a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Our regular services are held every Sunday at 10:00am and all are welcome. Chris Lamb (01253) 811252

about carolling in Knott End. Last month the band received some good news. We applied to the Co-op Community Fund and were successful in our application. This means that if you have a Co-op members card you can log onto your account and nominate the band to receive 1% of the cost of your shopping. We have a leaking roof at the moment so we are hoping that the money we raise will help fix the leak and will mean that we do not have to go to band rehearsals in our waterproofs anymore. All that remains for me to say is that on behalf of the band can we wish you all a very happy Christmas and best wishes for 2020. Are you one of the residents of Pilling proudly Larkolme Walk displaying a ‘Buy a Brick’ Certificate on your Sat 14th Dec 10:30am mantelpiece? The response to our campaign Meet at the Larkholme Grasslands Car Park, to raise funds for the New Community Hall in Pilling has been amazing, with over 125 bricks now sold, including many very generous donations. Pilling businesses are also showing their generosity for this worthy cause. Our local Premier shop customers continue to fill the collecting tub at the till and have now raised over £100 from small change collections. Look out for their certificates next time you are buying your groceries. Other businesses have bought bricks so if you see a certificate, say ‘thank you’ from us all! Schools and organisations have been fundraising by selling quiz sheets and holding events. A huge thanks to both junior schools who have held events to buy a brick. It seems that everyone is playing their part and in total, we have raised over £11,000 so far! So, yes, ‘it does take a village’ and this village is really showing that together we can raise the funds for our new hall. I am looking forward to finding my name on the Wall of Thanks when the hall is built, along with many other Pilling names. Will yours be there? There is still time to buy a brick. You can contact me for more details. I couldn’t think of a better Christmas gift for your loved ones! Thank you. Katrina Bell katrinambell@hotmail.com

KNOTT END & PREESALL IN BLOOM At the beginning of November six members of the In Bloom team attended the North West In Bloom awards ceremony at Southport awards, being presented to 150 entries from the North West. The entries range over many community projects from large and small parks, retail and business parks, caravan parks and environmental improvement projects. In addition there is the competition amongst towns and cities across the North West which are categorised by size of population. Last year we were awarded Gold for our entry and so were delighted when, for the second year, we again achieved Gold. Thanks go to everyone in the community who helped in any way. In addition to the ‘In Bloom’ category there are also over 500 ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ entries. This is a non-competitive category where any group of people who want to make some difference within their community submit their entry and receive criticism and advice from the In Bloom judges. Once again Knott End & Preesall came up trumps with The Willows being judged as ‘thriving’ and the Ash Grove residents and Knott End Working Men’s Club bowling group each receiving ‘Outstanding’ assessments.

EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY! Once more we all blinked and an entire year zipped by! I swear it’s just the start of the year and we have all of 2019 to enjoy. Ah well!
Of course I am sure there are many who will be watching what they eat, calorie counting and feeling guilty for over indulging.
I have battened down the hatches and switched my brain into what I call ‘Cosy mode’. Given the long dark nights I figured a long time ago that I had to change my mental state to enjoy this time of year so I switch to enjoyment of the darkness, the glow of candles and fires and, of course, the twinkling of Christmas lights.
However, for once I am here to tell you to go for it (kind of!) Did you know that there is very good research showing that if you eat food you think is bad for you and feel bad about it, it has a very negative effect on you.
The Christmas festival is a time of feasting and family. Regardless of the insane commercial excess we are now exposed to, the whole point of Christmas was that it was a coming together and sharing of our resources in the leanest time of the year. I’m staying away from the religious connotations for one reason only – we all know that side of the story.

Fortunately there is a get out clause here which is wonderful to behold! It is very simple too. If you eat something you think is bad for you but do not care and thoroughly enjoy the deliciousness of it, like a mince pie with lashings of thick cream for instance, then guess what? It does not have such a negative effect on you. That’s right. Enjoyment is a powerful way to help food do you good, meanwhile, fretting and guilt has the opposite effect. The basic lesson is that being happy is very
Are you phoning an advertiser for a quote?
EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY! (cont) healthy and very good for you. This sounds obvious but I am sure we all know people who seem weighed down with all of life’s worries – and it does them no good. There are no such ‘cheats’ for over eating I’m afraid. If you eat too much on a particular day then you need to think about what you will be eating the next day. This cannot be avoided if you wish to maintain a healthy weight. Here are a few other cheating tips to help you enjoy the festive season. Firstly if you must eat something with pastries or cakes such as mince pies, then make sure you counter balance the large carbohydrate count by adding a good helping of fat, such as extra thick double cream. The fats help balance the carbs and will stop you feeling too sleepy from the blood sugar crash of eating mince pies. And before you worry, good fats do not cause heart disease.
Secondly, beer most definitely puts weight on you. It is known as liquid bread for a reason and one pint is the equivalent of four slices of bread. However, wine and spirits do not put weight on you despite being highly calorific. The calories in wine and spirits are not bioavailable so your body cannot store them in the form of fat. Please be careful with alcohol. It can truly be the demon drink and must be treated with respect and taken in moderation. I wish you all the very merriest of Christmas times and may you all enjoy this wonderful mid-winter festival. Before we know it spring will be in the air so savour the crisp, frosty mornings when we get them. Have a pause and smell the winter air. It is a beautiful time of year if you look closely. OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE Christmas Day in the Front Room
Christmas jumpers encouraged but optional!
The Christmas festivities are almost upon us. We are hosting a Christmas Day of our own on Thurs 19th Dec 12:00pm – 4:00pm, all welcome!
Helen Roberts has been running a bereavement group from The Front Room at Over Wyre Medical Centre on the first Friday morning of every month (10:00am – 12 noon).
There will be music from Pilling Band and Hambleton Choral Group, a raffle in aid of Dementia UK and mince pies and warming drinks all round!
This is a support group for anybody feeling lonely or low following a bereavement. It is a place to make friends and chat with likeminded people who have an understanding of the bereavement process. Please do not be shy to pop along – all new members are very welcome and encouraged!
Lots of local businesses have already donated prizes to this worthy cause so come along and try your luck with a raffle ticket (on sale now) and let’s see if we can make some money for a praiseworthy charity this Christmas. Do you know somebody who will be on their own for Christmas Day or perhaps a housebound neighbour who loves a singsong? Why not bring them along to enjoy this event which will be full of Christmas spirit.
28
I would like to say a big thank you to our patients who have volunteered ideas for our Front Room initiative. We love to hear your opinions and ideas and will try our best to implement your requests wherever possible. The groups that are already using the room are thriving and the Poppy Making Session on Thurs 7th Nov was a great success!

NAAFI CAFE Over Wyre Veterans Meet and Greet The November meeting was well attended by twenty or so people and it included three who had never attended previously. One was 96 years of age and had served in the ATS during the Second World War. Hopefully they enjoyed the information that was given out as well as the laughs and Service life stories. If nothing else all enjoyed the coffee, tea and biscuits. Also in attendance was Wyre Borough Council’s Armed Forces Veterans Champion, Councillor Andrea Kay, who gave an insight into what Wyre Borough Council are doing to help those who have served their country. No date has yet been decided upon when the full Council will gather to witness the reaffirming and re-signing the Council’s Armed Forces Covenant. When this was first talked about with the CEO the weather was hot and
sunny. Perhaps we will have to wait for that to come around again in 2020. Discussions were held regarding the registering with the Medical Centre that you are ex-Service. Andrew Cropper brought with him some registration forms for completion and asked the attendees to hand them in to the Medical Centre. He also had with him a series of relevant leaflets that had been provided by the Medical Centre as well as other literature regarding Independent Living, Diabetes Control etc. It was stated that all were very pleased with the turn-out and procedure of the Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service as well as the 11-11-11 Commemoration Service. The most important thing about these gatherings is that it gives those who may not like going out the opportunity to meet with others from the Over Wyre community and chat with those with whom they have something in common – they have all served or are the family members of those who have served - in a completely informal gathering. Here they can talk about things that they may not want to talk about with other people, like one of our new attendees who told about the time he served in Cyprus during the troubles in that country and how it affected him and made him question the relevancy of actually being there and seeing comrades-in-arms being killed or injured. He talked about visiting Cyprus to see the memorial for the British Servicemen that were killed during those troubled times. Whilst he was relating the story another attendee actually went on Google and produced a picture of the memorial. That is the type of thing that the Meet and Greet NAAFI Cafe is all about and whilst there won’t be a gathering in December as we are holding a joint Christmas buffet with the members of the Royal British Legion we will be meeting again on Mon 20th Jan in the

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Over Wyre Branch At the November meeting there were 13 attendees and three new applicants for membership. Things are looking up. Remembrance The Remembrance Service and Parade etc went really well with about 250 people either
on-parade or watching. A really good turn-out which makes Branch members feel proud. Again we looked at involving young people from the community and the four Fire and Rescue Service Cadets stood tall and long in the cold on each corner of the Monument. Well done to them and also to the Head Boy and the Head Girl (also a Fire and Rescue Service Cadet) from St Aidan’s who read out the Roll of Honour. Thankfully this year we had a microphone and speaker so they could be heard. The young Bugler – Nicola from the Over Wyre Brass Group – was note perfect. Well done and thankyou and that includes the three Brownies who stood at the monument throughout the proceedings. Your parents and organisations should be very, very proud of you. I know that I am. Thanks are also due to our last minute standin Standard Bearer who stood there proudly

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION (cont) but also looked after the young people stood with him at the top of a windy monument. Thanks Tom Reilly. I shouldn’t forget to mention the St. Oswald’s Women’s Group who were waiting for us with hot coffee and tea and a well deserved biscuit. Thank you all. 11-11-11 This event, held at the Battle of Britain Memorial on Mon 11th Nov was well attended by about 40 or more members of the local community. It was very windy stood there facing the attendees who, probably, didn’t hear a great deal as the wind was blowing off the sea. Next year I think we will try for the microphone and speaker used on Remembrance Sunday. Poppy Appeal Well I think the community have done very well again this year by raising £5,346.37
which is fantastic considering there wasn’t any special event such as the end of the 1st World War to promote. This should, with a bit of luck, go just a little bit higher as there are still a couple of amounts to come in. The two outstanding collections this year are £704 from Ryecroft Restaurant and £888.12 from our No.1 collector – Ray. Those from Knott End and Preesall will have seen him sitting outside the Knott End Coop in his electric buggy. Come rain, wind and shine he was there. Thank You Ray as well as all the staff at the Ryecroft. The stock is now back in storage and my wife and I can again see the bed in the back bedroom. Social Events The Branch members have decided to organise a coach trip to the Imperial War Museum in Manchester in March. More will be published nearer the date but, like the coach trip to the National Memorial, we will be extending an invitation to members of the public to join us. The cost of the coach etc will be borne by those who decide to attend. It should be a good day out and not as long as the one to the NMA. The Branch members will be combining with those who attend the Meet and Greet Veterans NAAFI Cafe gatherings for a Christmas buffet on Thurs 12th Dec in the Preesall Youth and Community Centre from 12 noon until 2:00pm, which will count as our next meeting. Spouses and/or partners are also invited. It would be appreciated if you could let either myself or Jackie know who will be attending by Tues 3rd Dec so that we will know how many to cater for. That only leaves me to wish all our readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2020 from the Officers and Members of the Over Wyre Branch of the Royal British Legion. Annual Conference
Think Pink Sri Lanka
Well, we’re back from Conference. It was a long journey down to Bournemouth, but it was well worth it! Sometimes motivating yourself to do something is the hardest part. When I looked at the 5-6 hour journey time, the ‘should I?’ question came to mind but after attending, all I could think of was ‘I’m so glad I made the effort!’ We enjoyed fantastic speakers who provided great insights and were so motivational. We had feedback on projects from around our Federation which have been so successful and provided so much help and support for women and children. We enjoyed great entertainment and most importantly, met with

Whilst at conference, we ‘met’ a real Tuk Tuk – what a great piece of machinery and to think we are fast approaching the half-way mark to providing one of these machines for Sri Lanka. As you can see, we took the opportunity to

Annemarie has just sent off another batch of filled backpacks – and this means we have completed over 500 since we started in 2012. That’s absolutely amazing! Thank you to everybody who has donated backpacks etc over the years – and please carry on if you can. We are currently in need of pencil cases, spoons (dessert spoon size), toothpaste and of course backpacks. Please continue to drop off your used backpacks or other items at The Mustard Seed Café, Park Hill Road (opposite the Wheat Sheaf Pub). They are open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 10:00am to 2:00pm. It was really nice having the opportunity to have accessories explained and demonstrated in a comfortable gathering. We’ll give you plenty of notice for the next event. And finally… a big thank you for all the support you have given us during the year and we wish you all a fantastic and, if possible, a relaxing Christmas break and here’s to a peaceful 2020 full of fun and friendship together – Happy New Year! Our Autumn Tints October trip to Bowness was a lovely day out, with some members taking boat rides on Lake Windermere. The autumnal colours were a sight to see. Nelson
Rocco
Nelson is energetic and playful cat with a cheeky nature! Upon arrival in the cattery he lacked confidence and was a little nervous in his new surroundings but with some patience and reassurance he seems a lot happier and has developed into a lovely, friendly cat.
Rocco is an over excitable big pup who came into the centre due to his previous owner’s change of circumstances. He is very friendly with bundles of energy. He would definitely benefit from living in an active home. Rocco loves nothing more than exploring his environment off his lead in our paddocks and playing with his ragger or ball. He is intelligent and eager to please but does not always grasp boundaries and will definitely require an owner with large breed experience willing to carry out the further training required. Rocco enjoys going out on walks and is currently walked on a canny collar as he is very strong. He is slowly beginning to learn lead manners but this training would need to be carried on in the home.
As it took him a few weeks to trust us and adapt to cattery life, Nelson is looking for a new home where he can have all the attention he craves. Gulliver Gulliver, a lovely little rabbit, has found himself looking for a new home after being found as a stray. He is a shy rabbit but enjoys being stroked. He would benefit from lots of positive socialisation in his new home and needs lots of enrichment as he has an inquisitive nature. Gulliver will need a large double tier hutch and a large attached run. He is possibly ok

Controlling the amount of water is paramount along with correct drying times at each stage, knowing which colours are mixable on paper and how to keep them looking fresh. I think our resulting paintings were really good exceeding expectations.

Some members have taken up pen and wash inspired by John Harrison’s tuition. Accurate pen drawings of charming rural scenes with a limited amount of paint have resulted from those who had never tried this before, proving it is sometimes good to try new mediums. Also we learned plenty from Jonathon Leigh on appraisal day. He’s a regular visitor, always willing to offer advice in a kindly manner. We are proud to have donated paintings for the Brian House Charity Auction at the Cottage Loaf Bakery in Knott End. These were on display for two weeks in November. Maybe you put in a bid for one! We have also been working towards our Christmas Exhibition at Ashton Gardens Pavilion Cafe St. Annes. It’s well worth a visit! CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG (CRY) Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund This Autumn was definitely the busiest ‘table top’ time we’ve ever had with a variety of events offering seasonal goodies and raising enough for a dozen more heart tests to be carried out! Huge thanks to everyone who has donated items for sale and to our hosts, Out Rawcliffe Village Hall, Garstang URC, Kirkland & Catterall Memorial Hall and the Kenlis Arms. I’m writing this having just got home from welcoming 101 young people to Garstang Medical Practice for a CRY heart screening. Thankfully this time there were no life threatening conditions highlighted, but for some investigations will continue. Our thoughts are with them for a positive outcome. This extra one day screening event was funded by Matt’s Milk Bottle Challenge
(MMBC) so a huge thank you to everyone who has taken part, raising the £5,000 needed to organise this. MMBC Challenge 2! is up and running so if anyone would like to get involved please get in touch. We return to Garstang Community Academy for our next screening on the first weekend in February. Appointments for this will go on line during the first week in December with invitations going to Academy families for the private screening on Sun 2nd Feb. At the charity Christmas card sale the lovely cards depicting Garstang in the Snow, a fabulous image taken by local photographer Mike Coleran, were very popular! I’m pleased to say these are still available from Best Wishes on the High Street, alongside another delightful design featuring Santa’s present for Robin. Our thanks go to Marion and Mark for organising and offering these cards in

For those who adore a little retail therapy Krystal and Annalee are hosting a Christmas Shopping event with Bodyshop at Home, on Sun 1st Dec at the Kenlis Arms Hotel from 6:30pm. £6 a ticket includes a seasonal hand cream (if pre-booked).
The Club will be starting to celebrate the Festive Season very soon. We have our Christmas Party at the beginning of December. As always we are mindful of those less fortunate than ourselves and will not be giving each other Christmas cards. Instead there will be a voluntary collection which will be donated to Charity.
Sun 8th Dec 11:00am, Garstang’s very first Santa Dash. £12 per adult, £8 child, family ticket £35. Price includes: free santa suit, finishers medal, hot drink and Christmas tree gingerbread. For full details and entry go to www.garstangsantadash.btck.co.uk or at Market Place News. As the year comes to a close we would like to thank you all for your wonderful support throughout 2019. It has been a whirlwind of a year with so many diverse activities and fundraisers that we sadly cannot thank you all individually.
The Club will enter into the spirit of the Rotary Santa Sleigh with two members offering much needed refreshments to Santa and his helpers on Mon 16th & Tues 17th Dec when they complete their rounds. We will join Rotary for their Christmas meal and 200 Club draw. We wish all the people of Garstang and beyond a very Happy Christmas and Good Health in 2020 Mary Mason
As always we’ve had fabulous company along the way and feel very grateful that some of you chose to share your time and stories with us. Some events have been huge, some carried out quietly, some solo, some joint with other charities, but whatever you have done, and however you have done it on behalf of Matt’s fund and all those who have had free screenings we thank you most sincerely. These vital tests would not be carried out in Garstang without you. From all of us at Team Matt we hope the gifts of peace, friendship and love are with you this Christmas time and look forward to your company in 2020. GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS Donations A decision was made to donate £500 to the Brain Tumour Charity to be used to fund much needed future research. A sum of £200 had been allocated to purchase Christmas gifts to distribute to the different refuges in the area run by Fylde Womens’ Aid. However there is a continued need for new clothing items (for babies, small children and/or ladies), new toys, new cosmetics or new toiletries. This appeal is ongoing with our collection point being the Resources Centre (old Liberal Club on Bridge Street). The next delivery is planned to take place in the week beginning Sun 8th Dec. During the year Garstang Lions has given a total of over £5,500 to support the activities of a very wide range of local groups and charitable causes.

Memory Café
The Bonfire and Firework Display was a great success and the weather was kind on the night. Our thanks goes to both the Mayor of Garstang and the Deputy Youth Mayor for their attendance and assistance with the lighting of the fire, all of the Lion members and their partners who helped plus the several businesses that delivered and donated wood for this event.
The Lions continue to support the activities of the local Memory Café which is organised by Lion Sandra Perkins and meets on both the first Wednesday of the month (10:00am - 12:00 noon) and also the third Monday (2:00pm - 4:00pm) in Garstang Library. This is a lively social group with a range of fun activities being provided free for those suffering from dementia and their carers, family members and partners. The dates for these sessions are Wed 4th Dec and Mon 16th Dec (Christmas party).
Several members of the club acted as stewards supporting both the Switch-on of the Garstang Christmas Lights and the necessary road closures. The club will once again be assisting in parking cars for the popular Myerscough Ten Mile Run on Sun 1st Dec. The Lions will be hosting their annual Mencap Christmas Lunch on Sun 8th Dec at the Wyrebank Banqueting Suite. The event is expected to attract 105 guests with their arrival from 12 noon onwards.
Last month’s activities included a lively performance by the Garstang Ukulele Group who played a wide range of songs and a relaxing practical session on mindfulness and well being. Chris Wilkinson Lions

As usual the Lions will be assisting Santa Claus at the 2019 Garstang Victorian Festival on Mon 9th Dec and Tues 10th Dec. Please watch out for and visit our Grotto which will be outside the Kings Arms Public House. The annual Garstang Tractor Run is due to take place on Sun 29th Dec. Many Lions will be working hard to support this event. Our first event in the new year will be to assist with the car parking at the 10k Road Race and the two mile Family Fun Run to be held on Sun 12th Jan at Garstang Academy. Further information about the range of activities and projects we are involved in is available on the Garstang Lions website www.garstanglions.co.uk or you can just speak to any member about what we do or come along to our meetings held on the third Tuesday of the month in the Royal Oak at 8:00pm.

I am also excited to discuss our recent Berlin trip with you: 35 Year 10 and 11 pupils submersed themselves in German culture, tested their German language skills and walked more than two marathons over four days! 5,250,000,000,000. Would you be able to read that number? It’s five trillion, two hundred and fifty billion! How long would it take for you to count to that number? An hour? A day? A week? That’s how many pieces of plastic are strangling and choking our oceans right now! Just in the UK alone, 8 million tonnes of plastic crawl into our oceans. This means that there are over 46,000 items of plastic in every square mile of the ocean. It is incredible that every day, in our own country, we use 35 million single-use bottles. 100,000 marine mammals are carelessly murdered each year. One million sea birds killed annually. Horrifyingly, lots of sea creatures are getting trapped. These creatures are poisoned or entangled by this monstrous menacing murderer - plastic! In our rivers and oceans, this plastic breaks down and releases harmful chemicals which poison our fish and ends up in the human food chain. Many creatures are ingesting our loathsome litter. In 2018, a dead whale was found in Indonesia, with over a thousand pieces of plastic in its stomach, including: 115 plastic cups, 4 plastic bottles, 25 plastic bags, 2 flip-flops and 1 nylon sack. We face our biggest challenge ever. If it’s in our lunch boxes and our shopping baskets today, then it’s seeping into our rivers tomorrow and snaking through our oceans forever. The problem seems huge, yes: overwhelming, engulfing, irrepressible. We know plastic is a remarkable invention. it gives us life-changing medical equipment such as surgical gloves and prosthetic limbs. But, much of this plastic pollution consists of single-use, throwaway items. Trillions of drops of careless actions. A flood of tiny careless mistakes. We can stem this flow with small careful

WYRE VILLA FOOTBALL CLUB Unbeaten in November with two wins and a draw our first teams morale is on a high, currently one point off second in West Lancashire Footballs League First Division.
We run a 100 club monthly draw with new members always welcome to join. Price is £10 a month with the draw live on Facebook on the last Saturday of the month.
Joint managers Michael Donlon and Aaron Taylor are bringing exciting football back to Hallgate Park.
So with four teams under Wyre Villa Football Club a strong committee is needed. We are always open to new faces joining us with fresh ideas or fundraising suggestions. Our Christmas party is on Sat 7th Dec. Entry fee is £10 with the amazing DJ Summer playing an Ibiza mix.
The Reserves currently sit third from bottom of Reserve Division 2 and are in need of new players to boost the squad. This season sees an Under 18 side join the fold, hopefully a stepping stone towards the two senior sides, a great start sitting fourth in the league after three games. Many of our ex-players are now playing for the Veterans. They usually play once a month but now it’s more for the social side. We are also proud to have Blackpool Ladies using our facilities, with their matches being played on Sunday afternoons.

Walking Football
St Oswald’s Church Hall Wed 11th Dec 1:30pm - 3:00pm
The Fleetwood Flyers Over Sixties have just completed round three of the ongoing competition at Heywood Sports Centre. Their results were as follows: played four, won two, drawn one, lost one. This puts the team in second position in the league. The Over Sixty Fives had similar results but fare better as they top the league table. We also held a referee’s workshop at Poolfoot Farm. Twenty two attended and had some useful discussion on the rules of walking football followed by some practical training for the budding referees outside in the pouring rain. We must thank the representatives from both the English FA and the Lancashire FA for their time and expertise in delivering the workshop. We are still holding four walking football sessions a week, Sundays 11:00am - 12 noon in the red cages, Mondays, also in the red cages, 7:00pm - 8:00pm. Wednesdays 12:30pm - 2:00pm on the open pitches. This is the best session for anyone attending for the first time. Fridays 5:00pm - 6pm. This is also on the open pitches and is for the more energetic person as although played to walking football rules is a much faster game. www.fleetwoodwalkingfooty.co.uk www.@fleetwoodwalkingfooty.co.uk George Greenall (01253) 825206

MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS
Join in the great British Spring Clean. Come and help keep Knott End beach looking its best. Meet in the car park behind the Coastguard Staion. Gloves, hi-viz vests, bags, hoops and pickers all provided.
Whilst clearing out some old videotapes I came across one that was titled ‘Connie’s 18th Birthday Party’. It was the first Disco I videoed after moving to Knott End. It was around 1995/1996 at The Ranch House in Pilling. The party was great!
All-weather gear and waterporoof footwear recommended. All ages welcome.
If anyone remembers Connie and can get her to contact me I could transfer the tape to a DVD for her, free of charge. It’s a lovely memory.

Parish Councillors were planning talks with Cllr John Shedwick, who represents the village on the County Council, in response to worries aired by villagers. Councillors have also expressed fears and are calling for an urgent review. Cllr Shedwick was invited to the Council’s November meeting but was unable to attend because of a prior engagement. Talks are now planned for the end of November. Over Wyre Talks Plans for a get-together of Councillors to discuss matters of common interest in Over Wyre are continuing to take shape, with representatives from Hambleton, Out Rawcliffe, Preesall and Pilling joining Stalmine in confirming interest in meeting once or twice a year. Stalmine Councillors have suggested a first meeting in February, with each Council asked to bring one item of concern and one idea of proposed improvement. Details of how things would operate in practice would then be agreed at the meeting. This suggestion will now go to all interested parties. Road Closure Grange Lane in Stalmine is to close for three days from Wed 22nd Jan for works to replace a BT pole. This is a County Council scheme. Wardleys Lane in Stalmine will close from Mon 24th Feb until Tues 3rd March for cables to be installed in the carriageway by Gallagher Ltd on behalf of ENW. SSRA Stalmine-with-Staynall Residents’ Assoc Residents will remember that we were successful a while ago in registering our Stalmine ‘Seven Stars’ pub as an Asset of Community Value with Wyre Borough Council. As such, we have contacted Punch Taverns to request clarification on its future as a pub given the ‘To Let’ signs. We are delighted to report that they have assured us that the Seven Stars will remain open for business and look forward to hearing about new tenants soon. Copies of our email and Punch Tavern’s response are available to view in the Seven Stars. Our Christmas Lights winners will be visited over the Christmas period to receive a little extra gift for their festive displays. Please join in and help to light up our village at Christmas and bring festive joy and pleasure to our families and visitors. Finally, we wish all our readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. There is no SSRA December meeting. The next two dates are Wed 8th Jan and Wed 5th Feb 2020, the Year of Vision. PREESALL TOWN COUNCIL NEWS Celebration Plans Preparations are continuing for civic events in Preesall and Knott End next year as part of national celebrations. When the theme is announced for Commonwealth Day, which will fall on Mon 9th March, invitations to take part will go out to schools and local organisations from the council. VE Day 75 then follows on Fri 8th May, which will be a bank holiday. A large-scale event is planned with a ‘picnic in the park’ and entertainment from 3:00pm to 6:00pm. Charities interested in having a stall on the playing field are asked to contact the council. More details of what is happening in Preesall and Knott End for all these celebrations will be announced nearer the time. Flag Purchases Town councillors have reviewed the flag
collection and decided to buy a flag of St George, two Union flags and one Armed Forces Day flag, with an additional Lancashire Day flag to be provided by the Mayor. It was also recommended that a Preesall Town Council flag be commissioned, which could be flown regularly over the summer at the Battle of Britain Memorial. Service Tributes Two rowan trees are to be ceremonially planted in the Jubilee garden at Knott End Library to honour the long and exemplary public service of former town councillors Jean Mutch and Rosina Lawson, who stood down in May. This will be at 2:00pm on Sat 30th Nov. Festive Lights The Christmas lights are to be switched on at 5:00pm on Sat 30th Nov to bring festive cheer to Knott End and Preesall throughout December and into 2020.
