PHOENIX DANCE GROUP
Tues 7th Jan 10:00am - 12 noon Knott End Beach

The work done by those joining our group is vital in helping to remove debris from our seas. In particular plastics, most of which will not bio-degrade and has now been shown to be present in many food chains. We have been fortunate in 2019 to be joined by children from Fleetwood’s Charity School, Preesall. Their passion, enthusiasm and interest has been infectious. We would be happy to encourage other groups and schools to join us, tides permitting. Meet in the car park adjacent to the Coastguard Station at 10:15am. We finish at 12 noon. Gloves, hi-viz vests, bags, hoops and pickers all provided. Weatherproof gear and waterproof footwear recommended. All ages welcome. Jean Wilson (01253) 701119

GREAT WALL OF CHINA TREK
Craig Leppert, Sam, Tessa Corrigan & Nigel Dyke
Sam Matthews, 42, who grew up in South Shore but now lives in Rastrick, West Yorkshire, took part in a sponsored walk on a section of the mammoth Great Wall of China to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Charity.
The mum-of-two was diagnosed with the condition when she was just 15 and since then she has good days and some notso-good days when she needs to use her wheelchair. She flew out to China on Sat 14th Sept. Her walk started four hours north of Beijing and was a week long challenge, following the winding path along the Yan Mountains to the Gubeikou Gateway, via the famous ‘Heavenly Staircase’.
Sam said: ‘I would just like to thank the people who have either sponsored me or given a donation and I managed to raise over £3,000 for a cause that is so close to my heart.’ Sam’s sister, Tina Whalley, and their mum, Jean Shaw-Matthews, both live in Knott End, where local businesses Prestige Taxis, Knott End Pet Shop and the town’s Homecare branch have sponsored her. In addition Knott End Working Men’s Club gave a donation and plans for a charity night at the club in the new year are being discussed. Anyone who wants to support Sam can send any donations directly to the Multiple Sclerosis charity quoting Ref No 1018703 to MS National Centre, 372 Edgware Road, London, NW2 6ND, which then links to Sam’s walk. ST. HELEN’S COMMUNITY CAFÉ Weekly in Churchtown Wed 15th Jan 10:30am - 12:30pm We will reopen again on Wed 15th Jan. However, our Community Café will become a weekly affair on Wednesday mornings. This is because we would prefer to try and fill up the Sunday School one morning a week rather than struggle to fill it over five days. Thus, we will also be open on Wed 22nd Jan and Wed 29th Jan. The good news is that we will be doing some more ‘Souper Saturdays’ in conjunction with Churchtown-in-Bloom, with lots of homemade soups and cakes. More details to follow. The great news is that the Churchtown Beer, Cider & Gin Festival will return in August this year on Fri 14th, Sat 15th and Sun 16th Aug. This will be even bigger and better with a larger marquee, more drinks, more food and more live music. Hopefully the weather will be better as well! Mark Rivers-Bland 07956 520 242

OVER WYRE ART SOCIETY Happy New Year everyone! In 2020 I’m wishing for better weather, less politics, better health and less pollution. Our club members have produced better than ever paintings for our latest exhibition, still running if you thought you’d missed it over Christmas (see below). Leading up to the Christmas party, we had our final watercolour session with a work along from Ken Weigh from Blackpool Art Society. Ken showed us traditional painting methods. In previous weeks we’d been introduced to Chinese Brush Painting by Anne Allen from Yorkshire. Anne showed us freestyle painting using specialist materials on rice paper. A day workshop followed. In December, I think everyone benefitted from the information on picture framing given by Roy Smith of King Street Studios in Lancaster. Roy had just finished hanging the Christmas exhibition at his gallery and he

gave us valuable advice along with a mount cutting demo. Roll on our next exhibition! But first we’ll need to practise for some new paintings. Our January programme is below. Why not come and join us if something takes your fancy? Subs are now payable for members or £2 for a taster session if you’re new. Tues 14th Jan Still Life painting or drawing (bring materials and own subject if preferred). There will also be an auction or swapshop of unwanted picture frames, pictures, books and art materials (please bring your items in on the day). Tues 21st Jan Pastel Demonstration from Greg Howard, a well known artist. Tues 28th Jan Freestyle Practice Day. A day workshop with Greg Howard follows for members on Sat 1st Feb. What an amazingly dynamic high street we have in Garstang. There’s a wonderful range of small independent shops with inviting windows and caring traders who do their utmost to help and support their customers and the community’s many diverse fundraising activities. Throughout 2019, activities organised to provide local screenings through Matt’s fund were blessed with donations from such businesses. Others chose to support our work in a different manner, like Alison from Conway Cards and her customers who raised £1000 from her Peru trek! However, with its many moods and natures the street itself is very special too, playing host year round to a myriad of colourful parades, soulful ceremonies, proclamations, runs, races and rallies. Vivacious festivals abound alongside joyous celebrations,

CRY (cont) compassionate charity stalls, a bustling weekly market and more! Recently it was a spectacular sea of red and white as around 350 participants (and a few pets too) entered Garstang’s first Santa Dash for the Mayor’s charities. But it is also a place of serenity and peace as depicted on the charming ‘Garstang in the Snow’ Christmas cards, kindly sold on behalf of the fund courtesy of photographer, Mike Coleran, and Marion and Mark at Best Wishes. Such variety and dedication, and so inspirational, our high street is definitely deserving of generous patronage. Community and fellowship is so important, no matter where we live. During 2019 Matthew’s Fund at CRY was the ‘Charity of the Year’ for Bolton-le-Sands WI. Each month many from the village came together at a coffee morning to support the WI in raising a superb £1,000! It was my pleasure to accept their gift and their gracious hospitality on several occasions and to chat informally about Young Sudden Cardiac Death and Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome. Sadly several of the members have experienced the tragic loss of loved ones to these silent killers first hand so we feel so very privileged that they chose to share their stories and back our mission to screen as many young people as we are able. On behalf of all those who can be tested in memory of Matthew, thank you, you really are helping to save young lives. The reception staff receive a number of telephone enquiries throughout the afternoon regarding prescriptions that have been submitted in the last few hours. HAMBLETON WI Barbara Appleby stepped in when Jean Prowes, her employer, could not attend to demonstrate Christmas Flower arrangements. Barbara told us she had done a three year degree course at Myerscough College to really learn her craft. She started with a yellow plant pot containing oasis putting a large white candle in the middle and placing greenery including ivy, spruce and holly leaves around this adding white roses cut short and finishing with a red ribbon. She made another with a gold candle, then a metal trough was used, again with oasis and three candles this time, using metal supports for the larger candles, with orange roses and gold sprayed fir cones and gypsophila. She finished off with a show stopper curling two large lily leaves and stapling them into a suitable shape. ‘You can put greenery where

BEN WALLACE MP Happy New Year and start to a new decade! I hope all readers had a merry and restful Christmas. Last year was a busy one, particularly with the General Election coming just before Christmas. I want to thank everyone who voted for me for their continued support and the other candidates for a good natured campaign. I am absolutely delighted to have been reelected as your MP for the fifth time. It is a huge honour and I can promise you that I will continue to work hard for all of my constituents. I am most grateful to those of you who have written me personal messages to pass on your congratulations, these mean a great deal to me.
I am extremely lucky in Wyre and Preston North to have a wonderful team of helpers who delivered leaflets, put up posters and helped on election day. Without them I could not work effectively. I must also say a particular ‘thank you’ to my family for their support: my wife, Liza, for her patience and for looking after our three children while I am away in Westminster during the week; my children who came out delivering leaflets with me; and my parents whose support I can always count on. Nationally, the Election result was tremendous for the Conservatives. I am particularly excited at the number of new Conservative MPs in the North West and I hope this will help the Party to focus further on our region. After the uncertainty of the last three years, the Prime Minister now has a mandate and the majority to deliver Brexit. Whatever you think of our Prime Minister, I hope that you will agree that he has enthusiasm and the drive to reinvigorate politics. After having the political agenda dominated by Brexit for the last three years, I am excited to see our manifesto delivered. I enjoyed being able to spend the Election campaign in the constituency and meeting residents who might not ordinarily contact me. I was also delighted to hear success stories from business owners who I had helped years ago when they were just setting up their businesses. I was particularly proud to show the Prime Minister our constituency when he visited Thornton. While travelling around I did note that many of the road surfaces have been improved, however, Garstang Road in St Michaels stood out as one in particular need of attention. I am calling on Lancashire County Council to rectify this. I have also stayed in touch with those affected

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) by flooding across the constituency, in Thornton, Hambleton and Churchtown. You may recall that one of the pledges I made at the Election was that I would champion those affected by flooding and I committed to this. As you know, each year I invite the Gala Queens from across the constituency to come and have tea with me in the House of Commons as a ‘thank you’ for their work in the local community. The Election has set me back in sending out these invitations, but I can assure you that I am working with my Office to collate all the names and addresses of the 2019 Gala Queens and will be sending out the invitations as soon as possible. If you or your child is a current Gala Queen, please do contact me directly to ensure I have your details. If I can be of any assistance to you please ring my Office at the House of Commons on

HAMBLETON URC Hello All, Let us all here at Hambleton United Reformed Church wish both you and your family and friends a very Happy New Year. We hope 2020 is a year filled with joy, happiness and it is a comfortable one for you. As we are the church at the centre of our beautiful village and as part of our commitment of outreach, we want those in our community to know that we are here for you. MENTAL HEALTH The Medicalisation of Mental Health Care It is interesting to look at how we have allowed the medical profession to take over the responsibility for our mental health when the responsibility is on each and every one of us. The hardworking, dedicated NHS staff of a multidisciplinary mental health team do their best within a system that, dare I say it, often stigmatises and labels. How is this helpful? In recent years there have been attempts to use wellbeing services to intervene in mental health issues to prevent escalation but they are so over-stretched they can no longer meet the growing demand for in patient care. It is now common place for a person in crisis to be shipped off to the other end of the country and left isolated without the comfort of relatives nearby.
38
If someone needs help the current system uses an initial phone assessment with tick box answers to assess the patient, which is hardly appropriate for someone who is suffering. Subsequent breakdowns in communication may result in the patient being accidentally discharged at the height of their crisis. Samaritans regularly take calls from individuals in distress when they have been turned away by crisis intervention services. In some cases cries for help are received by individuals ringing from psychiatric units feeling frustrated that they have been misjudged by mental health professionals. With a Samaritan the person is free to talk fully about their feelings without the fear of anything happening to them that they don’t want to happen. Just having someone who listens and treats them with kindness and compassion is all they need.

MENTAL HEALTH (cont) The medicalisation of mental health means that individuals must fit into diagnostic tools used in psychiatry. Conditions of the mind are a collection of symptoms, there are no blood tests or scans indicating biological proof of a condition such as anxiety or depression. Once diagnosed a treatment plan can be put into place usually revolving around medication, treating the symptoms but NOT the cause. Side effects of mental health medications can be toxic and further debilitating. This is not to discourage people from seeking medical help as the right medication at the right time can be life saving. From the view point of health care services those of us with mental health issues have something wrong with us which needs fixing. There is another approach, however, more in line with Eastern culture, that periods of anxiety or depression are a signal from
our body telling us that something needs to change. Periods of unease are welcomed as an opportunity for growth, enabling us to evolve and live happier more peaceful lives. The system often takes a vulnerable individual and instead of supporting positive mental health and encouraging them to learn how to listen to the wisdom of their own body, sells them the idea that covering it up with medication is the best way. More people are starting to take back responsibility for their own mental health, letting go of what makes them sad and doing what makes them happy. A recent survey said that worrying about what other people think and always seeking to gain approval is the main cause of stress. Guilt over upsetting people keeps us stuck. Guilt is a wasted emotion, make amends

MENTAL HEALTH where possible and move on! Reset your dial to things to feel good about, find things to laugh about, make enjoying your life the priority. Be grateful for everything. Using food as medicine is being recognised, although functional medicine centres and integrative practices offering true holistic care are rare in this country compared to America. Research has shown that the food we eat affects our mood. GPs are becoming more knowledgeable about gut health and creating a healthy immune system which in turn contributes to a healthy mind, but are still limited to orthodox prescribing which in some cases unwittingly cause further harm. A good GP will ask you what do you think is causing this? What would help? Let’s start easing the burden on the NHS and taking responsibility for our own mental health, learning the art of meditation and listening
to the healing wisdom of our own bodies... whatever that may turn out to be. Polly Wignall - Emotional Health Practitioner e: pollywignall@gmail.com w: www.pollywignall.com

CAT SMITH MP I’m delighted to once again be writing in the Focus Magazine following last month’s General Election. It is a great honour to have been re-elected as MP for Lancaster and Fleetwood and I would like to say thank you to everyone who took part. More than 45,000 people took the time to cast their ballot and regardless of who you voted for, as your MP, I will endeavour to represent the very wide range of views and opinions held by voters across the constituency. The outcome of the General Election doesn’t negate the fact that there are still many families in Over Wyre who will have found this Christmas season a struggle.
A couple of weeks ago I visited Mustard Seed in Fleetwood, a project that helps the homeless, the lonely and the vulnerable. Every Monday they provide a hot meal – for many it’s the only hot meal of the week. They are always looking for donations of food and clothing so if you have anything left over this Christmas please consider donating it to such a good cause. I’ve been proud to represent Over Wyre since 2015. In just four years as our MP I have responded to 28,500 people getting in touch, including meeting with more than 1,000 constituents at my weekly advice surgeries. I’m conscious that the problems people raised with me before the election haven’t gone away; food poverty, homelessness, low income jobs, zero hour contracts... I’ll continue to act on behalf of everyone who contacts me.

CAT SMITH MP (cont) There is much to be done over the next five years. I’ll continue to fight for better rural services in health, transport and education. I’ll continue to support the parents of children with additional needs and our seniors who get treated so shoddily by the social care system. I’ll continue to work for justice for 1950’s-born women denied their pensions. The women who helped build Britain and were let down by the Government’s pension changes. Locally, I’m always really pleased to be invited to attend events and meetings. I normally go down to Westminster on Mondays and return Thursday evenings and where I can attend or support local events I always do as long as I don’t miss important votes! CAT SMITH MP (cont) setting up a new Over Wyre Labour branch, was a lifelong member of the Labour Party and he and I worked together on many local and general elections. He fought tirelessly against the gas storage project in Preesall and just before he died, he had worked as a caseworker in my office. He was also a member of the Over Wyre Community Choir and Amnesty International. He was universally well liked and was one of the kindest people you could hope to meet. He leaves behind his lovely wife Pat and many, many friends who will miss his fun, generosity and wise counsel. I’ve been asked to let you know that nominations are now open to find Lancashire’s Young Citizen of the Year 2020! It would be great if this year’s winner came from Over Wyre! This prestigious award is made each year by the High Sheriff of Lancashire to recognise the achievements made by young people to either a family member, an individual, a local organisation or their neighbourhood in some way or other in the last 12 months. All Finalists will be invited to attend a presentation at Lancashire Constabulary Headquarters in March 2020 when the winner will receive £500 together with a specially commissioned trophy and a certificate from the High Sheriff. There will also be two Runners-Up who will each receive £100 and a certificate. Check out the website www.lanpac.co.uk/ nomination for more details. Finally all that remains is for me to wish you a very happy new year. I hope 2020 brings you all that you hope for and I look forward to meeting many of you in the months to come. Cat Smith MP

RSPCA Jeremy
Chase & Sidney Brothers Sidney (grey tabby/white) and Chaos are looking for special and loving homes.
Jeremy is a sweet but super shy boy who arrived at the centre after he was one of three cats abandoned by his owner.
These guys have not had the best start in life and were born outside to a feral mum, so unfortunately they have received little socialising. They are responding well to gentle encouragement with each passing day and are gaining confidence.
He needs plenty of reassurance and an experienced understanding cat owner who has the time and patience to carry on building his trust and help to boost his confidence.
Together, they are curious and very playful, yet when they are on their own, they are more timid. These kittens need lots of socialisation and plenty of love and support and we feel they will be best suited to quieter cat experienced homes without young children.
Jeremy has found cattery life quite overwhelming and is more intent on hiding in his igloo or underneath his bedding. However, more recently he is gaining some confidence and trust around people and venturing out a little more. Jeremy just needs to feel comfortable and

that you may have. The end of the autumn term is always a full and fantastic time of the year in primary schools and Carter’s was no exception. Our Christmas choir got themselves ready, dusted off the red hats and reindeer headbands to head out around the area spreading festive cheer. The children loved visiting five local nursing homes and Knott End Library. They also performed at our Christmas Fair and our KS2 Christmas celebration evenings. These latter events also saw the world premiere of the children in Y3/4 performing ‘Christmas at the Movies’. The show saw the Grinch, Buddy the Elf and Kevin and the robbers from Home Alone amongst others take the stage with words and music. One of the highlights of our school year is the whole school trip to The Dukes in Lancaster. 180 children and 30 adults spent a thoroughly delightful two hours watching ‘Cinderella’. The children loved the acting, singing and dancing. Our Christmas Fair was brilliantly planned by our Friends of Carter’s team and wonderfully supported by families and friends. Father Christmas made an appearance and a welcome amount of over £600 was raised to spend across school. The Spring term will also see us begin the process of installing the new track around our playing field. This has been partly funded by our partnership with the Co-op as one of their local causes last year. The track will provide space for children to enjoy our fabulous environment all year round along with enabling families to approach school using the sea wall, avoiding busy Pilling Lane in the mornings and evenings. The Carter’s family also welcomes volunteers into school on a regular and recurring basis. We have a growing number of people who regularly contribute to children’s learning and

WALKING NETBALL TOURNAMENT The Percival Cup The very first ‘Percival Cup’ Walking Netball tournament was held in November at Rossall Sports Centre, Fleetwood. It was held in memory of Jayne Percival, who lost her battle to cancer earlier this year and has raised an amazing £532 for Trinity Hospice Palliative Care Services in Bispham and Cancer Research, so the tournament was a major success.
They were joined by Jayne’s husband, who has never played the game before, and her daughter, who is an ardent player. The runners up were ‘The Promenaders’, a local team from Blackpool. A special thank you to our officials Pat, Eliza and Nicole. We must also say a massive thank you to Rossall School for the generous donation of the Sports Hall and their hospitality. Everything was perfect.
Four teams competed, ‘Jayne’s Geriatrics’, ‘The Promenaders’ (Blackpool) and our own Live Wyres, split into two teams, ‘The Shocks’ and ‘The Sparks’. What a competition! It was fierce but all in good spirit to raise money for such a good causes!
Jayne was one of our own and lost her battle to cancer earlier this year at the young age of 56. She was an amazing wife, mother and friend to everyone she came in contact with. Her love of the game was unprecedented and a massive part of her life.
Congratulations to our winners ‘Jayne’s Geriatrics’, many of whom have not played netball for some fifteen years, but you would never have guessed once they were on court!
The brain child of this event was our coach Lynsey from Your Move, who had known Jayne for many years as a friend and also in the world of Netball, so it only seems right to raise money not only in Jayne’s name but for these worthy causes and keep her memory alive for all who knew and loved her. The event will continue to be held each year keeping Walking Netball alive in our area. Cancer is a terrible disease and we are always sad when we hear stories of not only adults but children losing their battle to it. But when it’s someone you know personally, it really hits home as to how life can change in an instant. Trinity Hospice in Bispham provides incredible care and compassion for their patients and families at their time of need and Cancer Research work tirelessly to improve treatments and the progress made is seeing many people not only in remission, but cured. If you would like to join in Walking Netball we meet at Thornton YMCA Mon 11:00am - 12:15pm and Wed 8:00pm - 9:00pm also at Fleetwood YMCA Thur 5:00pm - 6:00pm. WYRE VILLA FOOTBALL CLUB Since our last update the weather has caused a couple of postponed games at Hallgate Park. Credit goes to Graham Bradley for getting the pitch ready but the downpours have taken their toll. The first team have now slipped out of the top three with the gap widening to get into automatic promotion. A well deserved break over the Christmas period will give the lads time to recharge ready for action in the new year. The reserves now sit one off the bottom of the table and still looking for fresh players to join the match day squad. Great news though for the Under 18s - sitting joint top only losing one game all season and by time you’ve read this hopefully they will have beaten local rivals and joint table toppers Poulton Town Pumas. Good Luck. We hope to see new faces down at Hallgate Park in the New Year. Come down and support the teams. Home Fixtures (subject to change): •
Sat 4th Jan: Reserves v Haslingden St Marys – 2:00pm KO
•
Sat 11th Jan: First Team v Stoneclough – 2:00pm KO

FLEETWOOD FLIERS Walking Football We had a great month with both the Over 60s and Over 65s. The Over 65s had a big problem getting to the venue. They were stranded on the motorway for an hour and a half and had to play their four games on the bounce. However, this still sees them at the top of the league table. Their final games are at the beginning of next month. The Over 60s had their final set of games in Dec and only missed out on winning on goal difference, gaining ten points from their last four games. So we had to settle for the Runners Up trophy for the third year in a row . We are still running four sessions a week. Sunday 11:00am - 12 noon in the red cages at Poolfoot. This is a very gentle workout at a slower pace. Monday 7:00pm - 8:00pm also in the red cages. Wednesday 12 noon 1:30pm. This session takes place on the open pitches and is our most attended session. We get between thirty and forty men with an age range from fifty to eighty plus. The Friday session is from 5:00pm - 6:00pm and is self regulated. Still, walking football rules tend to be a little faster. The other sessions are covered by coaches from Fleetwood Town. George Greenall t: (01253) 825206 w: www.fleetwoodwalkingfooty.co.uk

regularly. If you would struggle with this ask a family member or contact your local fire station (on a non-emergency number) to see if they can help. Have your electrics checked. Check that all electrical equipment is working correctly and that all wiring is intact without any fraying. If reasonable to do so switch off electrical equipment at night. Ensure that all cigarette butts are fully out. Keep children away from cookers, and preferably out of the kitchen, when cooking. Do not leave the kitchen when cooking with fat. Use plug sockets safely, do not overload with plugs and preferably one plug to one socket. Put candles in a holder and keep away from items that may burn eg near curtains. Create a plan for how to get out of your home in case of fire. Close doors at night, this restricts fire spreading. If there is a fire get out, contact the emergency services, follow their advice and stay out.

The SSRA wish to thank all those residents who helped us to plan and deliver the tree. The support, sponsorship and voluntary work to make it happen was amazing. A great community venture that will become an annual event. Thank you so much, everyone. SSRA Easter Events We now look forward to planning our SSRA

SEVEN STARS CHARITY COMMITTEE Fri 29th Nov saw the SSCC’s second Presentation Evening held at the Seven Stars. We hold many fundraising events in support of local charities and on this evening cheques are presented to representatives of receiving charities. It is a very emotional but rewarding evening and it is wonderful to see our community come together in support of our work. Thank you to all those who help and support us in any way, no matter how small. Total donated = £8,675.00 We shall, of course, continue our work so look out for information and posters about future SSCC fundraising events, throughout 2020. Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year Doug Smith - SSCC Chairman
