COVID-19 FAQS water parks can open •

Outdoor performances in front of a live audience and indoor rehearsals can take place in Covid-19 secure venues.

The government has set out its plan to return life to as near normal as we can, for as many people as we can, as quickly and fairly as possible in order to safeguard livelihoods, but in a way that is safe and continues to protect our NHS. Here is published guidance on staying safe outside your home and guidance on social distancing rules.

Close contact services, such as nail bars, salons, tanning booths, spas, massage parlours, tattoo parlours and body piercing studios, can open. Only services that do not involve work in the highest risk zone – directly in front of the face – should be made available to clients, in line with government guidance.

NB: Guidance correct as of Thurs 16th July.

From Sat 25 July sports facilities and venues, including indoor gyms, fitness and dance studios, indoor swimming pools and indoor water parks can open – subject to evidence closer to the time

What will need to remain closed by law?

Should people wear face coverings on public transport?

Some businesses will need to remain closed, as we have assessed that they cannot yet be made sufficiently Covid-19 secure. See www. gov.uk for details of these businesses. Will a face covering stop me getting Covid-19? The evidence suggests that face coverings can help us protect each other and reduce the spread of the disease from someone who is suffering from coronavirus, but not showing symptoms. That is why it is important to wear a face covering on public transport and it is required by law. To protect yourself, you should also continue to follow social distancing measures and

Yes. It is a legal requirement to wear a face covering on public transport. This is helping to ensure that transport is as safe as possible as more people begin to return to work and go shopping. Transport operators will enforce this requirement, and the police can also do so. This will mean you can be refused travel if you don’t comply and could be fined. You should also be prepared to remove your face covering if asked to do so by police officers and staff for the purposes of identification. Can I start visiting people indoors now? Yes, you are able to meet indoors in groups

COVID-19 FAQS (cont) of up to two households (anyone in your support bubble counts as one household). This includes inviting people from one household into your home or visiting the home of someone else with members of your own household. You should continue to maintain social distancing with anyone you do not live with or who is not in your support bubble when doing so. If you are in a support bubble you can continue to see each other without needing to maintain social distancing. Who is allowed to travel on public transport? If you need to travel to work or make an essential journey, you should cycle or walk if you can, but you can use public transport if this is not possible. Before you travel on public transport, consider if your journey is

necessary and if you can, stay local. How many people am I allowed to meet with outdoors? You are allowed to meet in groups of up to six people who you do not live with or who are not in your support bubble. You are only allowed to meet in groups of more than six people if everyone is a member of the same household or support bubble. You are also allowed to meet people in groups of more than six people if everyone is exclusively from two households (anyone in your support bubble counts as one household). There is more information about the guidelines you should follow when meeting people you do not live with here. Are there restrictions on how far I can travel? No. You can travel irrespective of distance, but you should take hygiene and safety precautions if using services on the way. You should continue to avoid using public transport and should cycle, walk or drive wherever possible. If visiting other parts of the UK – Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – you must adhere to the laws and guidance of the devolved administrations at all times. If you wish to travel internationally, you should follow the laws of other countries and FCO international travel guidance. Can I share a private vehicle with someone from another household? You should avoid sharing a private vehicle with anyone outside of your household or support bubble as you will not be able to keep to strict social distancing guidelines. Are day trips ok? Day trips to outdoor open space are

COVID-19 FAQS (cont) allowed. You should take hygiene and safety precautions if using services on the way and practise social distancing from other people outside your household or support bubble. You should continue to avoid using public transport if you can. Consider all other forms of transport before using public transport. Can I go on holiday? Yes, you can stay overnight away from the place where you are living. This includes staying overnight in a second home, hotels, bed and breakfasts or campsites. You should only stay overnight in groups of up to two households (anyone in your support bubble counts as one household) and should ensure you maintain social distancing with anyone you do not live with or is not in your support bubble. Take particular care to maintain excellent hygiene - washing hands and surfaces - and avoid using shared facilities like bathrooms wherever possible.

It is important to maintain social distancing and good hand hygiene in these circumstances. You should continue to limit your interactions with those you don’t live with outside of these formal activities to help control the virus. Can I go to the theatre or a concert? Since Sun 11th July, outdoor performances have been permitted given the risk of transmission is lower outdoors. You should only be seated with members of one other household - and, wherever possible, socially distance from those you do not live with (or who are not in your support bubble) to reduce the risk of chains of transmission. Right now, venues should not permit indoor performances, including dramatic, musical or comedy performances, to take place in front of a live audience. This is because of

Can I pray in a place of worship? Yes, places of worship can open for services and communal prayer in line with guidance for reopening Places of Worship. You are able to independently pray or hold a religious ceremony in any place of worship. We advise that you limit your social interaction in these venues to your own household and up to one other, wherever possible. Strict adherence to social distancing is strongly advised and a distance of 2 metres should be kept from people you do not live with wherever possible. Can I attend an activity club or support group? Yes, you can. Premises such as activity clubs, community centres and youth clubs can reopen, and should follow Covid-19 Secure guidelines.

Venue managers should ensure sing-alongs or similar activities are avoided. You should also avoid environments that require you to raise your voice to communicate with anyone outside your household. Does easing restrictions apply to 70 year olds and over? Yes. However, the advice for those aged 70 and over continues to be that they should take particular care to minimise contact with others outside their household. How is guidance to those shielding (clinically extremely vulnerable) being relaxed? From Sat 1st Aug, the government will be advising that shielding will be paused. From this date, the government is advising you to adopt strict social distancing rather than full shielding measures.

Strict social distancing means you may wish to go out to more places and see more people but you should take particular care to minimise contact with others outside your household or support bubble. In practice, this means from Sat 1st Aug you are advised that you no longer need to shield. This means that from Sat 1st Aug, the government will be advising: •

GARSTANG TOWN COUNCIL (cont) Their concerns were brought to an extraordinary meeting of the Town Council, whereby the need for an urgent response was recognised. Thirty-five people attended the virtual meeting including representatives of the business community, the Town Trust, neighbouring parishes and members of the community. Since the extraordinary meeting (held on Mon 8th Jun), meetings are being held on a weekly basis, with the support of Wyre Council and LCC. Short term objectives have been identified, which primarily are aimed at promoting Garstang town centre as a safe environment for people to visit and shop and build confidence in the town that it is open for business. One of the first challenges was to address queueing issues on Church Street and the

Market Place. Measures have been taken to improve both areas. The Thursday Market has thrown up a number of challenges. The market supervisor has organised a team of volunteers to assist with the safe placement of market stalls. The stalls have been spread out along the High Street. More is being done on this and a temporary road closure has been agreed for Thursdays. Access will be maintained for residents and shopkeepers who will all be visited prior to the closure. Arrangements have been made to enable access to the Royal Oak car park from Park Hill Road. We have set up a Town Centre business mailing list making it much easier to communicate quickly with all businesses. The objective is to return Garstang to its rightful place as a thriving market town and a destination for the local community and those further afield. This will be a challenge.

CHILDREN IN A COVID-19 WORLD My wife and I took our 19 month old daughter Zena to an outdoor children’s play area last weekend. Whilst we had to book a time and were given an hour slot it was nice to have a semblance of normality.

wiping everything down before he got on, she was watching him like a hawk and would repeatedly tell him to, “stop touching your face, I told you before, stop touching your face!”

During lockdown I would take Little Zena for an afternoon walk to get her to sleep. On the rare occasion that we met other children she would light up, arms and legs waving and saying, “Hiya!” It was quite clear to me that whilst Zena did not realise she missed children it was obvious that she did.

This continued for the whole hour and afterwards when they sat at a table for a drink. Now I know we have been given advice from on high, even if it has generally been garbled, confused and conflicting (as an osteopath I could treat a hairdresser but a hairdresser could not cut my hair – not that I have much to cut) but this example made me worry.

I don’t think three months without her peers will do any long term harm, especially given the fact she spent that time being chased around the garden by daddy! However, I do worry about the effect the Covid-19 crisis has had on the young. At the play area I watched a mum shadowing her young son around all the climbing frames,

Are we going to educate a generation of children to live in fear of their environment? To live in fear of their fellow human beings and even to live in fear of touching their own face? I have said it before and I undoubtedly will say it again: we are walking, talking, living,

CHILDREN & COVID-19 (cont) breathing hives of bacteria and virus. We are exposed to such things from the moment life begins and forever onwards. If bacteria and viruses were our mortal enemy there would be no human life on earth, in fact, it is because of bacteria that we HAVE life on earth. Please do not bring your child or grandchild up to live in fear of the essence of life itself. I genuinely worry about generations of germaphobes and resultant complex allergies from trying to make our environment sterile.

Here is a case in point that was documented back in the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1919. In the USA your chances of dying if you went into a hospital were between 40% and 60%. However, if you went to an osteopathic hospital (yes, they have them in the USA) the death rate was 0.25%. It is thought that this dramatically contrasting death rate was down to one simple difference. In the standard hospitals they gave people aspirin to suppress their fever whilst the osteopaths allowed the fever to do its job.

Do not forget that the chance of your children becoming ill is miniscule. It would appear the virus cannot affect them because their immune system is so immature it does not respond to it at all, therefore, there are no symptoms. Please bear that in mind, that symptoms are a sign of your body responding to the illness with a defence. Do not suppress this defence.

Rather than concern yourself with an invisible enemy I would ask you to maintain good health. Exercise, avoid sugar, eat real food, meditate, get fresh air, do not sit, do not smoke, maintain a sensible weight etc etc We are the most overweight nation in Europe and are not far behind America these days

Fever harnesses your immune system to come to your defence. Please let it work.

in that league table. That is not something to be proud of, especially when we know that obesity is a factor in how Covid-19 affects you. Perhaps we should use this crisis as a warning shot across our bows that our nation could be healthier and avoid a lot of chronic diseases if we were not continuously conned by the powerful processed food and fast food manufacturers into thinking convenience food is good for us. In no way do I wish to play down Covid-19 but a modicum of good sense would not go amiss would it. We only have to look to the USA and the chaos there to realise that being sensible and listening to good science can help. FAIRTRADE (cont) empower producers to combat poverty. As a movement of producers, activists, businesses, and decision-makers, we have made great strides, over the past twentysix years, since the Fairtrade Mark was first placed on a product and we are determined to continue to strive for a world in which producers thrive. So, join us to shape the way Fairtrade drives change across the movement. What are we looking for? People between the ages of 16 and 30 to help us get creative about how we work as a campaigning movement. Would you or anyone you know like to get involved and rise to the challenge? What is the commitment? This is one of the things we want you to help us define! How much is the right amount of work? The group will meet virtually and the

commitment will change according to what we are working on. At first, we will run some longer workshops around our big pieces of work. This may be up to half a day per month to begin with. We value commitment and would expect you to try to make every meeting. What do you need to know? You don’t need to be a Fairtrade aficionado, but you do need to be someone who is passionate about seeing a world where people know and care where their food came from and who is prepared to take action for the world you want to see. Sounds great! What do I need to do? You can find all the details on the Fairtrade Foundation website at www.fairtrade.org. uk/get%20involved/Youth-for-Fairtrade Download and fill in the form then return it to joseph.harrison@fairtrade.org.uk

GARSTANG ARTS CENTRE Garstang Ukulele Group Eleonore Browne: Saint & Ukulele Player As readers of Focus Magazine will already be aware, the first ukuleles were crafted in the early 17th Century by a luthier from Abbeystead for the midgets of Catterall. Although there were many lute players in Dolphinholme, Garstang and Cabus, the arms of the inhabitants of Catterall were too short to stretch around these fat-bodied instruments.

22

Josiah Browne was an enterprising and talented craftsman who realised that there was an untapped wealth in Catterall and so he came up with the idea of a smaller four-stringed instrument which he initially called a lutette. Only later when it was taken to Hawaii via Portugal and Madeira did it become known as a ukulele. However, what is less well known is that Josiah’s younger sister was a talented dancer and harpist who invented the eightstringed lutette. Eleonore went from one village to the next playing her harp while twirling her skirts in the busy markets. Critics of the day praised her harp playing, but they said that this large instrument made her dancing clumsy. While Eleonore was attracted to the size of her brother’s lutette, it was too quiet for a busy market. She came up with the idea of replacing each of its four strings with a

GARSTANG ARTS CENTRE (cont) pair of strings, some an octave apart. She persuaded her brother to make this for her and soon she was top of the popular entertainment gossip. People travelled from Lancaster, Pilling and Preston just to see her dancing with her new instrument. However, like many innovative artists, Eleonore was destined to die young. She was only 26 years old when the Puritans, who were celebrating the death of the Pendle witches, turned their attention to Eleonore. Her music was too sweet and her dancing too tantalising for their vision of hell on earth, so they branded her appeal as witchcraft. Eleonore was hanged at Lancaster on 8th August 1620, but ukulele players throughout the world will remember her and dance while they play on this 400th anniversary of her martyrdom. GARSTANG 3LS Greetings to all members and friends, hope you are still keeping safe and well and coping in these unprecedented times. As promised in the July issue of Focus we want to let you all know what the immediate future holds for the group. It has been decided that the most sensible thing to do is cancel the rest of this year’s meetings. This has not been an easy decision, but it was felt that this was the safest way to keep us all free from any contact with the virus. January is when we normally have our Christmas meal, but this too will not happen. However, on a brighter note, we do hope to

It’s good to connect with you again this month. Sadly we’re not yet at the stage of being able to meet together indoors in Inglewhite or Catterall to share coffee and cake at our regular community Coffee Stop. Like many churches we want to remind you that though our doors are closed we are very much open. See the website for easiest way to link with services and events for all ages. We’ve recently enjoyed an open air, socially distanced gathering on the church field. The sun shone and we all very much valued and enjoyed the company of friends. Church contact numbers are listed on the website. Further outdoor events are scheduled so if there’s anything we can support you with or if you’re able to join with us please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Keep safe and well during August. GARSTANG MILLENNIUM GREEN The Garstang Millennium Green seems to have been a welcome area for those needing exercise over the last few months. Our team of volunteers resumed tasks once the lockdown rules were eased, whilst respecting the government’s rules about social distancing and hygiene. We owe them a huge thanks for all they have done. As well as the usual mowing and care of vegetation they have managed to install a new picnic table. This is near to the Wyre Lane entrance so it is easily available if you are parked on Wyre Lane. In spring we saw some success with the recently planted bluebells and the daffodils gave us a good show. Some of the wild flowers have come again but it is very hard for us to get them to flower in successive years because the ground is so fertile. Apparently many wild flowers thrive in poor soil. A lot of

work has gone into encouraging their growth this year but unfortunately the grass takes over. It’s an ongoing project and thanks to those who work at it. We are hoping to plant some more trees, in the autumn if possible, to help improve our earth’s atmosphere. The pond continues to thrive and we have had tadpoles that, at the time I write, are still developing but it is taking a long time and we may not see frogs this year. Investigation is ongoing as to how we can improve their chances another year. The white blackbird has been spotted again. This is very rare and if you have spotted it you are lucky. We are very fortunate to have been given a beautiful information board for the pond. Once it is installed do go and look at it and then find out what you might spot.

If you are using the picnic area, please remember to take your litter home or to the nearest bins that are by the entrances to the Millennium Green. Unfortunately, if we want our bins emptying, they have to be near the entrances. We want everyone, of any age group, to make use of the Green for their leisure activities. However, just occasionally groups use the Green and forget that it is a place that everyone wants to enjoy and antisocial behaviour occurs. If you see anything of real concern the police have asked us to make them aware by ringing 101. Please report the location as High Street Car Park, or Wyre Lane, but explain that the incident is taking place at the Millennium Green. It is now 20 years since the Millennium Green was given to the people of Garstang. In that time many people have supported the Millennium Green Trust financially or by volunteering or by showing their appreciation of the area in other ways. We thank you for your support. GARSTANG HISTORICAL SOCIETY As yet there are no plans to resume our monthly meetings. This will be the case until there is clear advice from the government. Even when the situation becomes more clear we will have to take into account any continuing restrictions / safety measures required by the management of our meeting venue (Garstang United Reformed Church and its neighbouring hall). We will continue to send out information on regional history matters to those members whose email address appears on our database. If you are a member, and have not given us your email address, but wish to do so, please email: garstanghistorical@ gmail.com A programme for future meetings has not yet been drawn up due to on-going uncertainties, but speakers on historical topics from Lancashire and Cumbria have indicated they will be pleased to speak to our society when more normal circumstances prevail. In the meantime we would draw the attention of members and others to a useful local Facebook page which carries regular articles and old photographs of Garstang and district. It is called ‘Garstang Good Old Days’ and is recommended. Anthony Coppin

GALLOWAYS SOCIAL CLUB I do hope that you are all keeping well and that you have managed to get out a little bit more. As most of you will be aware, like most of the groups, Galloways Social Club is still unable to meet at the present moment, but I can assure you that I will let you know as soon as it is deemed safe to do so. In the meantime take care and please don’t hesitate to contact me if you need any help. Let’s hope we will be able to meet again soon. Lorna Musgrave (01995) 471319

CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG (CRY) Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund As August makes its entrance life remains in a state of flux. Coronavirus has certainly created a great many ups and downs in so many walks of life and the approaches and procedures to deal with the situation appear to change on an almost daily basis, but to quote from that other famed little green book, ‘A ramble round Catterall & District’ by Joe Lane, ‘Tempora mutantur, nos et mutantur in illis’ - Times change and we change with them. I know some of you have taken to reading (and/or re-reading!) this little gem or walking the routes these past weeks and we are very grateful to the author for donating the monies from the sale of these grand little books, with a further £370 recently bestowed. We are really missing our lovely supporters and being out at events meeting you all, but being mindful of the circumstances we are

exploring new safe ways to raise awareness and hopefully funds for heart screening. We now have a Wyre Community lottery page - www.wyrelottery.co.uk Tickets cost £1 per week. It supports local causes and you could win £25,000. With 50% of all tickets sold from our page going to CRY and 10% to other local causes, it’s win-win. Over the past months it has been fantastic to witness the many acts of bigheartedness across this community and beyond. From our perspective we owe a debt of thanks to those who have helped us keep Matt’s Fund flourishing, especially to those who so generously sent donations or produced and abundantly replaced the lovely items that were taken from our wayside stall. It was a sad thing to happen in our charming village but your kind words and positive responses have been truly appreciated.

GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS Events This time of year would normally be a very busy period for the club but obviously there have been no meetings or events taking place hence this is a very brief report. Donations One of our prospective members, Paul Ferguson has successfully completed a

virtual coast-to-coast cycle ride to raise much needed funds for the Oaklands Care Home covering about 130 miles over a three day period. The club have provided £130 sponsorship for this worthy achievement. Our congratulations go to him for doing this, especially as we understand that he enjoyed it so much he then repeated this strenuous journey. Several Lion members assisted Kepple Lane Surgery and pharmacy by moving the club’s barriers to help with queue control social distancing. It would of course be completely free of charge to any participating charity. We have a very large garden area and with a little imagination and some detailed planning we should be able to organise an event that meets required criteria when lockdown measures are eased sufficiently to allow it taking place in a way that does not put our residents at risk. Of course things are fluid at the moment and none of us can be sure of how the next few months will pan out, but if our idea is of interest to you then please make contact with us.

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) There is a great deal of talk around schools re-opening and adapting to the new normal. The reality is, schools have never closed and they have been working extremely hard often delivering alternative ways of working for those pupils at home as well as teaching pupils from key workers’ households on site. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all school staff who even during these difficult times are looking after the education of the younger generation and I sincerely hope many of you will get a summer break, although I know summer schools will be taking place. Covid 19 & Loneliness As restrictions ease and people are asked to be careful but go back to some form of normality, many of us are very conscious of the possibility of Covid-19 spikes and indeed a second wave. this with more contact with friends and family. Many older people have been affected badly by this virus and those who live alone have been hit particularly hard. Many have been cut off from friends and family and even stopped from nipping out to the shops where they would normally come into contact with others on a daily basis. I believe this pandemic has highlighted the real issue of loneliness and isolation especially in older people. This issue has come to our attention for obvious reasons but even before Covid-19 loneliness was a real problem. As a society we are now maybe more aware of how it can affect people and I am hopeful that as a result we can target it better, even if that is only being aware of an older person who lives on their own and checking on them now and again or just having a chat.

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) Scams There is a great deal of goodwill within our communities especially during the current emergency but unfortunately, even during these difficult times, there are a few people who are out to take advantage. I have recently been in touch with Trading Standards here in Lancashire who have informed me of several scams some, using Covid-19. For example, there have been reports of scam phone calls where people are being offered face masks, cleansing gel and gloves. One resident was offered these products and the caller asked for her address then stated the cost would be £29 and asked for her bank details. Please remember, people should not give their bank details over the phone in this way. Nationally, reports have been received by

Action Fraud and Trading Standards of fraudsters seeking to exploit the pandemic by claiming to be raising funds for charity. Make sure the charity is genuine before giving any financial information. Trading Standards advice is to never give money without doing research. The advice is never to give your details over the phone, never click on links on suspicious looking, unsolicited text messages and never to give your details on a website which does not look secure or official. Remember to look out for the padlock, which is displayed in the address bar when you are on secure websites. Check that the sites are official, for example all Government websites should have a gov.uk address. Trading standards are also warning about rogue traders. BEN WALLACE MP (cont) and two ridge tiles re-pointed for nearly £400. A few weeks later the same traders returned, offering to pressure wash their drive, charging a similar amount of money for a job that did not take very long. In another case in Thornton Cleveleys, a resident agreed to have some minor roofing repairs carried out by cold callers, once the work had started the traders began to find further faults, escalating the job and the price. The advice is you should never agree to work from cold callers on the doorstep and always do your research. Make sure you have a valid address of a trader before agreeing to a contract. If anyone receives suspicious text messages, they should not click on any accompanying links, and report them to Action Fraud by contacting 0300 123 2014 or visiting www. actionfraud.police.uk To reduce telesales calls join the Telephone Preference Service on 03450 700707. Many telephone service providers can also offer help to reduce the number of scam calls you receive. Trading Standards advice is to always say no to cold callers. The Safe Trader Scheme can help you find a trader in your area, contact 0303 333 1111 or go to www.safetrader.org.uk You can report rogue traders, scams or get advice from the county council’s trading standards service via the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133. Looking Ahead I am looking forward to having greater opportunity to get out and about in the constituency this summer. I have been offering support to the many constituents who have contacted me during this difficult time, but am looking forward to hearing more personal stories about how

people have coped through these challenging times. ST JOHN’S HOSPICE Workings Through Coronavirus If we have one message for our community it is that we’re still here and we’re still working Demand for our services continues throughout the pandemic. Our Clinical Nurse Specialists and Hospice at Home nurses are still working in the community visiting patients in their own homes and our inpatient ward remains open and cares for patients 24/7. Every day, every week our nurses care for people living in your local community and coronavirus hasn’t stopped this care. We are adapting the way we work in all areas to ensure that key services continue to operate in these uncertain times. A St John’s Hospice at Home nurse recently said: ‘Covid-19 has not stopped our Hospice at Home team from offering this professional and much needed patient and family service – we just can’t let people down and we never give up. This means we have to adapt; so that every shift is always covered so we can be there for our patients and their families.’

CAR PARKING BOOST Longer Car Parking Boost for Town Centre Trade Wyre Council has extended parking stays to help boost town centre trade. For the next two months parking times will be extended by an hour in Poulton on Mondays, Fleetwood on Tuesdays, Cleveleys on Wednesdays and Garstang on Thursdays. Parking on all Wyre Council’s long stay car parks on the relevant day will be extended so that a £1 ticket will give you two hours parking and £2 ticket will give you four hours. On Rough Lea Road in Cleveleys which is a short stay car park, a £1 ticket will be increased to two hours and a £2 ticket will allow you to park for three hours. Councillor Roger Berry, Portfolio Holder for

St John’s Hospice is a registered charity - not part of the NHS - and receives limited government funding. We don’t charge a penny for the care we give, but the care we give is not cost free. So if you can help your local hospice, perhaps by taking part in our lottery for £1 a week or giving a regular monthly donation you can directly help us continue to provide care during one of the most difficult times patients and families face. St John’s works as a team with its wonderful community – we wish everyone well in our local communities through these times. We will continue to do all that we can to keep caring for patients and their families living through illness, death and bereavement. Thank you for your loyalty and support in these difficult days – we wouldn’t be here without you. Sophy Horner

Neighbourhood Services and Community Safety at Wyre Council comments, ‘As part of our recovery plan we are working closely with businesses to ensure that our high streets reopen safely. We know how difficult this last few months has been for businesses and we want to encourage people back to our town centres, whilst adhering to government guidance to stay safe. This extra time will give people the chance to spend more time in our shops and cafes and hopefully give local businesses a bit of a boost.

I hope as many of you as possible have now had the opportunity to safely meet with friends and loved ones and you’re starting to feel like life is a bit more normal. I’ve had a very busy period in Westminster and at the time of writing myself and some local campaigners had some great news.

When I was first elected as an MP, a constituent from Pilling approached me wanting to make ‘I would also encourage local people to buy our an appointment. CAT SMITH MP (cont) developmental delays because of a drug she took when she was pregnant. She told me that the drug, sodium valproate, was known to cause birth defects yet it was still being prescribed by GPs.

The government needs to immediately apologise on behalf of the healthcare system to all the families who have been affected by sodium valproate and set up a taskforce to implement the report’s recommendations.

Janet and her friend Emma told me that shockingly, sodium valproate had led to around 20,000 babies being born in the UK with birth defects.

Over the summer I’ve been contacted by schools, youth organisations and community groups concerned by the rumours that the swimming pool in Fleetwood won’t reopen.

Sodium valproate is used to treat epilepsy and bi-polar and has brand names including Epilim, Episenta, Epival and it is still available on prescription from the NHS.

The facility boasts a fantastic learner pool and thousands of children from Over Wyre, Thornton and Fleetwood over the years have learnt to swim there.

With other MPs I helped to create a crossparty group in Parliament to campaign on this issue and of late I have been proud to chair that committee. Finally, after years of writing, lobbying, and challenging, Baroness Cumberlege was asked to conduct a review of Medicines and Medical Devices Safety. Last month she published her review into patient concerns over sodium valproate, the use of pelvic mesh implants and hormone pregnancy test Primodos. She concluded patients had come to ‘avoidable harm’. Baroness Cumberlege’s report vindicates everything Janet, Emma and other campaigners have been saying for decades – that this was a scandal the NHS chose to ignore and dismiss and led to unnecessary and avoidable suffering. Clinicians need to start listening, hearing and believing women when they report pain or concerns around their child’s development. For too long women have been dismissed as being emotional, irrational and unreasonable. I’m in awe of the energy and persistence of women like Janet and Emma. After campaigning alongside them for the last five years, it’s a reminder to me that fighting for justice may take a lifetime but that shouldn’t ever stop us from trying.

I’m delighted Wyre Council has announced the gym at Fleetwood will reopen on Mon 3rd Aug followed by classes from Wed 5th Aug. I remain concerned however that there is no opening date for the pool. Wyre Council says swimming pools and other services are not reopening at this stage: ‘As The Countryside

well as safety concerns, having to limit the numbers of swimmers due to social distancing and the practicalities of limited changing room space, it has been decided that pools and further activities will reopen when viable.’ This is very disappointing given the government announced all indoor gyms, swimming pools and sports facilities can reopen from Sat 25th July. According to experts, some pools will never reopen: its estimated around 500 UK pools will have to shut for good as a result of financial problems caused by the lockdown – I hope Fleetwood isn’t one of them and this is why I launched a campaign to keep it open. To date, almost 3,000 people have responded to that campaign. This week I was contacted by one of our most successful Paralympians, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson. She got in touch to express her concern over the threat to Fleetwood’s

swimming pool closing. She told me there is a risk of permanently losing 48% of the nation’s public leisure facilities by Christmas, ‘Since 20 March, the physical activity sector has faced a crippling combination of zero income, outstanding rent payments, failed insurance claims and delayed furloughing funds,’ Tanni told me. ‘Public leisure providers, have continuously fallen between the gaps of Government support programmes. In total just under half of the nation’s public leisure operators are now at risk of becoming financially non-viable or insecure over the next six months, jeopardising 1300 facilities, and more than 58,000 jobs. Given reports that many councils could go bankrupt due to the financial pressures of Covid-19, non-statutory services such as public leisure are at particular risk.’ Whilst the reopening of gyms is good news, my focus is on the hundreds of children who

Women Inspiring Action, Transforming Lives Although we have seen some lifting of lockdown restrictions, we are still not having physical meetings but to be honest, we always have August as a no-meeting month anyway – everyone deserves a break. But that doesn’t mean things aren’t happening in the background. We’ve now added Zoom to our repertoire. As a group we really like to communicate and we’re using every means possible. It is nice to see as well as hear people – it gives reassurance when you actually see a person. In fact, Zoom/Skype are going to be featuring prominently for Soroptimists for quite a while

SOROPTIMISTS (cont) yet. Each year as an organisation we hold a conference where delegates from all the clubs in our Federation meet to hear inspirational speakers, share best practice, celebrate our achievements and hold our AGM. This year should have been Belfast but…. don’t fret, we can do it – virtually and we will! The details and technology are being sorted and we’ll go ahead with our conference – should be interesting. Likewise, in our region we usually get together each year for the Rosebowl competition. You’ve guessed it – we’ve adapted. It’s going to be a quiz this year but as a club, we’ve arranged a Zoom meeting so we can do the quiz as a virtual social get together and I’m sure we’ll enjoy a glass of wine as part of the gathering. The serious stuff still continues and Jackie (our Programme Action Officer) is really keeping us on our toes. Amongst other things we are addressing the following issues: •

Lobby our MPs to get the UK to ratify the Istanbul Convention.

Write as a group to the scrutiny committee urging them to strengthen the provisions of the Domestic Abuse Bill 2020.

GARSTANG CAMERA CLUB

Since lockdown began at the end of March, the Garstang Camera Club has managed to tick over with regards to its membership. The joint Chair, Lewis Thompson and Mike Jenner organised a series of six internal competitions. The images entered in the first four of these competitions had to be taken within the confines of the photographer’s property. The last two, with restrictions to travel being relaxed slightly, were a little more open. The response to the competitions has been good and members of the club could vote for the best (in their opinion) top five places. However, with a chink of light at the far end of the tunnel, and it is a long one, the committee

GARSTANG CAMERA CLUB (cont) organised a half day (3 hour) visit to Garstang on Wed 22nd July. This was the first of three such visits over the summer period. The final two have yet to be decided upon. Images taken on these three visits will form the basis of the Events Cup 2020. Any member wishing to take part should inform the club’s chair via email. As with many other voluntary organisations we aim to follow the relevant health and safety recommendations and these can be found on our website given below. ROTARY Rotary Raises £580 in Charity ‘200 Club Draw’ The Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre held their six monthly ‘200 Club Draw’ on Wed 24th June. Due to the Covid-19 lockdown we were unable to hold the traditional event. However, Rotarians were able to make use of the technology that they have adopted for their regular meetings. Throughout the Rotary organisation we are using Zoom - an application which enables a number of people using a laptop, a tablet or a smart phone to view and speak to one or all members of the group as seen on their own screen in their own homes. On Wed 24th June, 11 Rotarians and their

wives tuned in using Zoom. The Tombola drum and corks were sited at the home of Rotarian Alan Jefferson and his wife Glynis. Alan, Glynis and the tombola plus corks were fully visible prior to the Draw. The prizes consisted of: 15 of £10; 2 of £25 and 1 of £500. After drawing the £10 and £25 prizes they are returned to the tombola for the star £500 prize to be drawn. After an introduction the draw began. Alan displayed the 200 corks on its storage board. Corks were removed by Alan and Glynis and placed in the tombola. After a thorough shake up Glynis pulled out the first cork. This was passed to Alan who read out the number and displayed the cork on the screen. The number was checked against the list of members by the Secretary of the 200 Club, sited at his home, he then announced the specific winner’s name. This process continued for all the 18 prizes described above. Ticket number 151 was the winning number for the first prize of £500. The President of the Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre, Stephen Iles, in thanking the members and the organisers of the draw stated: ‘The draw has raised £580 which will go towards the Rotary charity account. ‘This will assist us with a number of Rotary local charities including support for young people, assistance in the face of Covid-19 and international charities which includes the world-wide elimination of polio.’ Further information and full details of all the winning numbers are available from the Rotary Club.
