Outdoor performances in front of a live audience and indoor rehearsals can take place in Covid-19 secure venues.
The government has set out its plan to return life to as near normal as we can, for as many people as we can, as quickly and fairly as possible in order to safeguard livelihoods, but in a way that is safe and continues to protect our NHS. Here is published guidance on staying safe outside your home and guidance on social distancing rules.
•
Close contact services, such as nail bars, salons, tanning booths, spas, massage parlours, tattoo parlours and body piercing studios, can open. Only services that do not involve work in the highest risk zone – directly in front of the face – should be made available to clients, in line with government guidance.
NB: Guidance correct as of Thurs 16th July.

Should people wear face coverings on public transport?
Some businesses will need to remain closed, as we have assessed that they cannot yet be made sufficiently Covid-19 secure. See www.gov.uk for details of these businesses. Will a face covering stop me getting Covid-19? The evidence suggests that face coverings can help us protect each other and reduce the spread of the disease from someone who is suffering from coronavirus, but not showing symptoms. That is why it is important to wear a face covering on public transport and it is required by law. To protect yourself, you should also continue to follow social distancing measures and
Yes. It is a legal requirement to wear a face covering on public transport. This is helping to ensure that transport is as safe as possible as more people begin to return to work and go shopping. Transport operators will enforce this requirement, and the police can also do so. This will mean you can be refused travel if you don’t comply and could be fined. You should also be prepared to remove your face covering if asked to do so by police officers and staff for the purposes of identification. Can I start visiting people indoors now? Yes, you are able to meet indoors in groups

COVID-19 FAQS (cont) of up to two households (anyone in your support bubble counts as one household). This includes inviting people from one household into your home or visiting the home of someone else with members of your own household. You should continue to maintain social distancing with anyone you do not live with or who is not in your support bubble when doing so. If you are in a support bubble you can continue to see each other without needing to maintain social distancing. Who is allowed to travel on public transport? If you need to travel to work or make an essential journey, you should cycle or walk if you can, but you can use public transport if this is not possible. Before you travel on public transport, consider if your journey is necessary and if you can, stay local. How many people am I allowed to meet with outdoors? You are allowed to meet in groups of up to six people who you do not live with or who are not in your support bubble. You are only allowed to meet in groups of more than six people if everyone is a member of the same household or support bubble. You are also allowed to meet people in groups of more than six people if everyone is exclusively from two households (anyone in your support bubble counts as one household). There is more information about the guidelines you should follow when meeting people you do not live with here. Are there restrictions on how far I can travel? No. You can travel irrespective of distance, but you should take hygiene and safety precautions if using services on the way.

COVID-19 FAQS (cont) You should continue to avoid using public transport and should cycle, walk or drive wherever possible. If visiting other parts of the UK – Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – you must adhere to the laws and guidance of the devolved administrations at all times. If you wish to travel internationally, you should follow the laws of other countries and FCO international travel guidance. Can I share a private vehicle with someone from another household? You should avoid sharing a private vehicle with anyone outside of your household or support bubble as you will not be able to keep to strict social distancing guidelines. Are day trips ok? Day trips to outdoor open space are allowed. You should take hygiene and safety precautions if using services on the way and practise social distancing from other people outside your household or support bubble. You should continue to avoid using public transport if you can. Consider all other forms of transport before using public transport. Can I go on holiday? Yes, you can stay overnight away from the place where you are living. This includes staying overnight in a second home, hotels, bed and breakfasts or campsites. You should only stay overnight in groups of up to two households (anyone in your support bubble counts as one household) and should ensure you maintain social distancing with anyone you do not live with or is not in your support bubble. Take particular care to maintain excellent hygiene - washing hands and surfaces - and avoid using shared facilities like bathrooms wherever possible. You are able to independently pray or hold a religious ceremony in any place of worship. Secure guidelines. It is important to maintain social distancing and good hand hygiene in these circumstances. You should continue to limit your interactions with those you don’t live with outside of these formal activities to help control the virus. Can I go to the theatre or a concert? Since Sun 11th July, outdoor performances have been permitted given the risk of transmission is lower outdoors. You should only be seated with members of one other household - and, wherever possible, socially distance from those you do not live with (or who are not in your support bubble) to reduce the risk of chains of transmission. COVID-19 FAQS (cont) front of a live audience. This is because of the increased risk of transmission associated with these types of activities indoors. There may be an additional risk of infection in environments where you or others are singing, chanting, shouting or conversing loudly. This applies even if others are at a distance to you. Venue managers should ensure sing-alongs or similar activities are avoided. You should also avoid environments that require you to raise your voice to communicate with anyone outside your household. Does easing restrictions apply to 70 year olds and over? Yes. However, the advice for those aged 70 and over continues to be that they should take particular care to minimise contact with others outside their household.
How is guidance to those shielding (clinically extremely vulnerable) being relaxed? From Sat 1st Aug, the government will be advising that shielding will be paused. From this date, the government is advising you to adopt strict social distancing rather than full shielding measures. Strict social distancing means you may wish to go out to more places and see more people but you should take particular care to minimise contact with others outside your household or support bubble. In practice, this means from Sat 1st Aug you are advised that you no longer need to shield. This means that from Sat 1st Aug, the government will be advising: •

From the Dispensary Staff at Over Wyre Medical Centre Firstly, we would like to thank our dispensing patients for their support and understanding during the Covid 19 crisis, especially during the early weeks of lockdown. We saw an influx of prescription requests, frequent problems with stock shortages and staffing problems due to isolation and shielding. We have been so grateful for your understanding and patience during this time. As soon as lockdown was announced, we took the decision to protect our higher risk patients and have been delivering to anyone who was on the shielding list and any other patients we felt were more vulnerable such as diabetics and anyone over 70 years. As most of you will be aware, the shielding period is due to end on Fri 31st July and we are therefore asking if patients who would

If for any reason you are unable to collect your prescription, please feel free to give us a call and we can discuss the options available rather than looking for an alternative chemist. We are aware that some of our patients have been contacted by online pharmacies offering free home delivery during the Covid 19 pandemic. We would urge you not to be tempted to use these services. As a community, it is imperative we continue to support our local chemists and medical centre dispensary. Using online chemists can also make it very difficult to resolve any problems you have with your prescription. face masks to stop the spread of coronavirus and brings us in line with the World Health Organisation’s advice.
Face Coverings to be worn by Patients when Visiting Over Wyre Medical Centre
We therefore recommend that wearing a face covering should become part of your daily routine. We also urge our patients against using medical masks which must be kept for clinical settings.
All patients being called into the Medical Centre for a face-to-face appointment such as bloods, smears, injections etc are to adhere to the government policy applicable from Mon 15th June and wear an appropriate face covering. This is to ensure the safety of patients and staff alike. The new rules for face coverings mean that they must be worn on public transport and for visiting hospital and outpatients. People with certain health conditions, disabled people and children under the age of 11 will be exempt from the rule. Masks can be homemade, such as a scarf or bandana. The UK government has issued this advice on
Patients may be turned away if no face covering is worn or if it is considered inappropriate. It is also advised that the Medical Centre will not be able to give face masks to patients. There is currently a shortage of clinical face masks and our weekly allocation is rationed. We therefore kindly ask if our magnificent patients can help us to help you by ensuring a face covering is always worn whilst on the premises. Thank you for your support and stay safe. Have your Say on the Future of the Hambleton Practice People registered with Over Wyre Medical Centre have been asked to give their views on the closure of its smaller branch practice in Hambleton. The building in Kiln Lane is in need of significant investment to bring it in line with regulations including infection control. The branch had been temporarily closed since March to focus the practice’s services at the main premises in Wilkinson Way, Preesall, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The practice has launched a survey with patients asked to provide any issues they may face following the branch closure. Dr Luke Holmes, one of the GP partners at Over Wyre Medical Centre, said: ‘We have continued to develop the main Preesall branch of the surgery in recent years, turning it into a true 21st-century modern health facility that meets the needs of all our patients. ‘While we have enjoyed a long history in Hambleton, the building itself was in great need of renovation. Also, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, there were fewer and fewer appointments taking place there. ‘We strongly believe all our patients can have their needs met adequately at the Preesall site, however if anyone does have any concerns I would encourage them to let us know by completing the survey. ‘Closing the Hambleton site would also potentially allow us to expand our state-ofthe-art premises in Preesall to bring even more services to the area, preventing the need for people living Over Wyre to travel to other parts of the Fylde Coast for some appointments.’ In the 12 months leading up to March 2020, only an average of 121 appointments per week were carried out in Hambleton, compared to 1,634 in Preesall. Of those

OWSAC Sorry to say we still have no dates for our next meeting, but it will happen one day watch this space.
Knott End and Preesall Men’s Fellowship is sorry to advise that due to the implications of the Covid-19 virus, we have taken the decision to suspend meetings for the period October 2020 - March 2021. This has not been an easy decision, however due to the need to book speakers in advance, and to ensure we can meet the social distancing requirements, it has been necessary to come to this decision. It is the first time in the 90 years of our existence as a Men’s Fellowship this has happened. Even during the war, meetings were held without interruption.
Meanwhile, proceed with caution and stay safe.
If, virus permitting, a meeting could be held by June 2021 members will be informed in due course.

PILLING LANE WI I am pleased to report that all our ladies are coping well with the ongoing situation and that some members are finding novel ways to keep in touch with each other. As the summer progresses and we have been given a little more freedom, we will be able to get out and about more. We are lucky to live in an area where we can enjoy the clean air, sea views and green outdoor spaces that so many in towns and cities cannot. Let’s hope the weather stays fine so we can make the most of them this month. If I do have news on when we can meet again, I will get in touch. If you need anything or just fancy a chat give me a ring. Janet (01253) 467978

been put in place, please visit our website.
Our three charity shops have now reopened and are following social distancing guidelines as set out by the government. However, please be aware that we are currently unable to accept donations at this time. This is due to the ongoing Covid 19 situation. The opening hours of each shop has been reduced and the capacity for displaying items within the shop has roughly halved for us to be able to adhere to the social distancing measures.
Our phone lines will also be reopened although the hours have been reduced and will operate from 11:00am - 2:00pm.
We are reviewing the situation on a regular basis and we look forward to welcoming donations when it is possible for us to do so. CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG (CRY) Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund As August makes its entrance life remains in a state of flux. The coronavirus epidemic has certainly created a great many ups and downs in so many walks of life and the approaches and procedures to deal with the situation appear to change on an almost daily basis, but to quote from that other famed little green book, ‘A ramble round Catterall & District’ by Joe Lane, ‘Tempora mutantur, nos et mutantur in illis’ - Times change and we change with them. I know some of you have taken to reading (and/or re-reading!) this little gem or walking the routes these past weeks and we are very grateful to the author for donating the monies from the sale of these grand little books, with a further £370 recently bestowed. We are really missing our lovely supporters and being out at events meeting you all, but being mindful of the circumstances we are exploring new safe ways to raise awareness and hopefully funds for heart screening. We now have a Wyre Community lottery page - www.wyrelottery.co.uk Tickets cost £1 per week. It supports local causes and you could win £25,000. With 50% of all tickets sold from our page going to CRY and 10% to other local causes, it’s win-win. Over the past difficult months it has been fantastic to witness the many acts of bigheartedness across this community and beyond. From our perspective we owe a debt of thanks to those who have helped us keep Matt’s Fund flourishing, especially to those who so generously sent donations or produced and abundantly replaced the lovely items that were taken from our wayside stall. It was a sad thing to happen in our charming village but your kind words and positive

CHILDREN IN A COVID-19 WORLD My wife and I took our 19 month old daughter Zena to an outdoor children’s play area last weekend. Whilst we had to book a time and were given an hour slot it was nice to have a semblance of normality. During lockdown I would take Little Zena for an afternoon walk to get her to sleep. On the rare occasion that we met other children she would light up, arms and legs waving and saying, ‘Hiya!’ It was quite clear to me that whilst Zena did not realise she missed children it was obvious that she did. I don’t think three months without her peers will do any long term harm, especially given the fact she spent that time being chased around the garden by daddy! However, I do worry about the effect this COVID crisis has had on the young. At the play area I watched a mum shadowing her young son around all the climbing frames, wiping everything down before he got on,
she was watching him like a hawk and would repeatedly tell him to, ‘stop touching your face, I told you before, stop touching your face!’ This continued for the whole hour and afterwards when they sat at a table for a drink. Now I know we have been given advice from on high, even if it has generally been garbled, confused and conflicting (as an osteopath I could treat a hairdresser but a hairdresser could not cut my hair – not that I have much to cut) but this example made me worry. Are we going to educate a generation of children to live in fear of their environment? To live in fear of their fellow human beings and even to live in fear of touching their own face? I have said it before and I undoubtedly will say it again: we are walking, talking, living,

CHILDREN & COVID-19 (cont) breathing hives of bacteria and virus. We are exposed to such things from the moment life begins and forever onwards. If bacteria and viruses were our mortal enemy there would be no human life on earth. In fact, it is because of bacteria that we HAVE life on earth. Please do not bring your child or grandchild up to live in fear of the essence of life itself. I genuinely worry about generations of germaphobes and resultant complex allergies from trying to make our environment sterile. Do not forget that the chance of your children becoming ill is miniscule. It would appear the virus cannot affect them because their immune system is so immature it does not respond to it at all, therefore, there are no symptoms. Please bear that in mind, that symptoms are a sign of your body responding to the illness with a defence. Do not suppress this defence.
to be proud of especially when we know that obesity is a factor in how COVID affects you. Perhaps we should use this crisis as a warning shot across our bows that our nation could be healthier and avoid a lot of chronic diseases if we were not continuously conned by the powerful processed food and fast food manufacturers into thinking convenience food is good for us. In no way do I wish to play down COVID but a modicum of good sense would not go amiss would it? We only have to look to the USA and the chaos there to realise that being sensible and listening to good science can help. Our American cousins demand the right to carry a weapon but get angry about being asked to wear a mask in public. Nick Tofolos (01995)Â 918718
Here is a case in point that was documented back in the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1919. In the USA your chances of dying if you went into a hospital were between 40% and 60%. However, if you went to an osteopathic hospital (yes, they have them in the USA) the death rate was 0.25%. It is thought that this dramatically contrasting death rate was down to one simple difference. In the standard hospitals they gave people aspirin to suppress their fever whilst the osteopaths allowed the fever to do its job. Fever harnesses your immune system to come to your defence. Please let it work. Rather than concern yourself with an invisible enemy I would ask you to maintain good health. Exercise, avoid sugar, eat real food, meditate, get fresh air, do not sit, do not smoke, maintain a sensible weight etc etc We are the most overweight nation in Europe and are not far behind America these days in that league table. CAT SMITH MP I hope as many of you as possible have now had the opportunity to safely meet with friends and loved ones and you’re starting to feel like life is a bit more normal. I’ve had a very busy period in Westminster and at the time of writing myself and some local campaigners had some great news. When I was first elected as an MP, a constituent from Pilling approached me wanting to make an appointment. Nothing strange there - as a newly elected MP I was being inundated with requests for meetings. But when I first met Janet Williams she arrived with an eye-watering amount of paperwork a warning sign that this wasn’t going to be straightforward! Janet, supported by her friend Emma Murphy,
told me that her two sons had been born with developmental delays because of a drug she took when she was pregnant. She told me that the drug, sodium valproate, was known to cause birth defects yet it was still being prescribed by GPs. Janet and her friend Emma told me that shockingly, sodium valproate had led to around 20,000 babies being born in the UK with birth defects. Sodium valproate is used to treat epilepsy and bi-polar and has brand names including Epilim, Episenta, Epival and it is still available on prescription from the NHS. With other MPs I helped to create a crossparty group in Parliament to campaign on this issue and of late I have been proud to chair that committee. Finally, after years of writing, lobbying, and challenging, Baroness Cumberlege was

CAT SMITH MP (cont) asked to conduct a review of Medicines and Medical Devices Safety. Last month she published her review into patient concerns over sodium valproate, the use of pelvic mesh implants and hormone pregnancy test Primodos. She concluded patients had come to ‘avoidable harm’. Baroness Cumberlege’s report vindicates everything Janet, Emma and other campaigners have been saying for decades – that this was a scandal the NHS chose to ignore and dismiss and led to unnecessary and avoidable suffering. Clinicians need to start listening, hearing and believing women when they report pain or concerns around their child’s development. For too long women have been dismissed as being emotional, irrational and unreasonable. I’m in awe of the energy and persistence of women like Janet and Emma. After
campaigning alongside them for the last five years, it’s a reminder to me that fighting for justice may take a lifetime but that shouldn’t ever stop us from trying. The government needs to immediately apologise on behalf of the healthcare system to all the families who have been affected by sodium valproate and set up a taskforce to implement the report’s recommendations. Over the summer I’ve been contacted by schools, youth organisations and community groups concerned by the rumours that the swimming pool in Fleetwood won’t reopen. The facility boasts a fantastic learner pool and thousands of children from Over Wyre, Thornton and Fleetwood over the years have learnt to swim there. I’m delighted Wyre Council has announced the gym at Fleetwood will reopen on Mon 3rd Aug followed by classes from Wed 5th Aug.

Wyre Council says swimming pools and other services are not reopening at this stage: ‘As well as safety concerns, having to limit the numbers of swimmers due to social distancing and the practicalities of limited changing room space, it has been decided that pools and further activities will reopen when viable.’ This is very disappointing given the government announced all indoor gyms, swimming pools and sports facilities can reopen from Sat 25th July. According to experts, some pools will never reopen: its estimated around 500 UK pools will have to shut for good as a result of financial problems caused by the lockdown – I hope Fleetwood isn’t one of them and this is why I launched a campaign to keep it open. To date, almost 3,000 people have responded to that campaign. This week I was contacted by one of our most successful Paralympians, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson. She got in touch to express her concern over the threat to Fleetwood’s swimming pool closing. She told me there is a risk of permanently losing 48% of the nation’s public leisure facilities by Christmas, ‘Since 20 March, the physical activity sector has faced a crippling combination of zero income, outstanding rent payments, failed insurance claims and delayed furloughing funds,’ Tanni told me. ‘Public leisure providers, have continuously fallen between the gaps of Government support programmes. In total just under half of the nation’s public leisure operators are now at risk of becoming financially non-viable or insecure over the next six months, jeopardising 1300 facilities, and more than 58,000 jobs. Given reports that many councils could go bankrupt due to the financial pressures of COVID-19 - non statutory services such as public leisure are

CAT SMITH MP (cont) at particular risk.’ Whilst the reopening of gyms is good news, my focus is on the hundreds of children who rely on the pool to learn life saving skills and to learn to swim - and on those who depend on the pool for exercise they wouldn’t otherwise be able to access. At the time of writing, Lancashire County Council’s Highways Department is carrying out work on Burned House Lane – the scene of so many collisions and near misses. I know the work has led to horrendous diversions. Let’s hope they get it right and the junction is finally made safe – and then perhaps I can stop writing to them on a monthly basis rightly highlighting your worries and concerns. CHARITIES TOGETHER (cont) we are very restricted in the extent to which we can receive visitors to our lovely home. At the time of writing, visits are strictly limited to those with a close relationship with a resident and by prior appointment only. However, we are starting to turn our minds towards a time when we may be able to invite people on to our site, albeit with the social distancing and personal hygiene measures in place. With this in mind our thinking is that we would like to offer one of our major assets, that of our extensive and beautiful grounds, to host an event that benefits as many people from Garstang and the surrounding communities as possible. Specifically, we would like to hear from you if you are involved with a local charity and would be interested in being part of an openair charity day should we be able to hold such an event at some point this year. We would
host this in our grounds with each individual charity being allocated its own space in which to promote and/or fundraise for its work. It would of course be completely free of charge to any participating charity. We have a very large garden area and with a little imagination and some detailed planning we should be able to organise an event that meets required criteria when lockdown measures are eased sufficiently to allow it taking place in a way that does not put our residents at risk. Of course things are fluid at the moment and none of us can be sure of how the next few months will pan out, but if our idea is of interest to you then please make contact with us. SOROPTIMISTS Women Inspiring Action, Transforming Lives Although we have seen some lifting of lockdown restrictions, we are still not having physical meetings but to be honest, we always have August as a no-meeting month anyway – everyone deserves a break. But that doesn’t mean things aren’t happening in the background. We’ve now added Zoom to our repertoire. As a group we really like to communicate and we’re using every means possible. It is nice to see as well as hear people – it gives reassurance when you actually see a person. In fact, Zoom/Skype are going to be featuring prominently for Soroptimists for quite a while yet. Each year as an organisation we hold a conference where delegates from all the clubs in our Federation meet to hear inspirational
speakers, share best practice, celebrate our achievements and hold our AGM. This year should have been Belfast but…. don’t fret, we can do it – virtually and we will! The details and technology are being sorted and we’ll go ahead with our conference – should be interesting. Likewise, in our region we usually get together each year for the Rosebowl competition. You’ve guessed it – we’ve adapted. It’s going to be a quiz this year but as a club, we’ve arranged a Zoom meeting so we can do the quiz as a virtual social get together and I’m sure we’ll enjoy a glass of wine as part of the gathering. The serious stuff still continues and Jackie (our Programme Action Officer) is really keeping us on our toes. Amongst other things we are addressing the following issues: •

There are times though, when a visit to the great outdoors isn’t possible and at those times, the Forest of Bowland AONB team hopes their new online resources will come in handy. The Days to Remember project aims to encourage older people and those living with dementia, alongside family members and carers, to enjoy a ‘virtual’ exploration of this beautiful area. The newly launched web page has everything from tips and resources for making your own Great Outdoors memory box; to links to puzzles, quizzes and colouring sheets and a relaxing guided meditation. Sandra Silk, Forest of Bowland Project Officer said: ‘Last year we worked with Lancashire County Council’s Heritage Learning Team to produce a Great Outdoors memory box full of activities designed to trigger positive recollections and encourage conversations about past countryside visits and adventures. Unfortunately, this part of LCC’s loans service is temporarily on hold so the new web page is our way of sharing some of those ideas online.’

The website also includes a guided meditation written and narrated by Helen Leece of the Gathering Fields Retreat near Abbeystead. Based on the sights and sounds of a Bowland meadow in summer, the twenty minute audio, which includes natural sounds and simple music, is designed to offer some gentle relaxation.
Rotary raises £580 in Charity ‘200 Club Draw’
‘Ultimately, we would like to help people experience Bowland in a variety of ways’, said Sandra, ‘whether that be through improving signposting and access so that people have the confidence to explore for themselves, or through offering guided sessions and activities. We hope our online suggestions will help people stay connected to nature.’
Due to the Covid-19 lockdown we were unable to hold the traditional event. However, Rotarians were able to make use of the technology that they have adopted for their regular meetings.

Prizes consist of 15 of £10, 2 of £25 and 1 of £500. After drawing the £10 and £25 prizes they are returned to the tombola for the star £500 prize to be drawn.
The President of the Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre, Stephen Iles, in thanking the members and the organisers of the draw stated: ‘the draw has raised £580, which will go towards the Rotary Charity Account. This will assist us with a number of Rotary local charities including support for young people, assistance in the face of Covid-19 and international charities which includes the world-wide elimination of polio.’
After an introduction the draw began. Alan displayed the 200 corks on its storage board. Corks were removed by Alan and Glynis and placed in the tombola. After a thorough shake up, Glynis pulled out the first cork. This was passed to Alan who read out the number and displayed the cork on the screen. The number was checked against the list of members by the Secretary of the 200 Club, sited at his home, he then announced the specific winner’s name. ONLINE SCHOOL AT SAINT AIDAN’S In January 2020 nobody would have believed us if we had said that within three months our students would all be at home learning online to keep everyone safe, just like millions of other all over the world. The word ‘unprecedented’ is used too much at the moment – but this has definitely been unprecedented. As soon as we realised that we might have to close the school we put plans in place to make sure that our students could continue to learn and to work with their teachers if we had to close. We have really good ICT facilities at Saint Aidan’s, and students are used to using personal tablet computers in class, but we still all had a lot to learn in a couple of weeks in March. Closing the school and realising that we might not see each other in person for months was quite emotional for us. It was especially difficult for our Year 11 students who missed
out on their GCSE exams, their Prom and all the rites of passage they were expecting to have happened by now. However, we all knew that it was the right thing to do for us and for our older relatives. We closed on Frid 20th March. On Mon 23rd March we were straight into Day one of online school. Students who might have been expecting a lazy day at home found that they had five lessons of work to do, and this has continued every school day since. They have had to get used to submitting work online, and teachers have had to get used to marking online – which some of us have not found easy! However, all the effort has been worthwhile as we have been able to keep supporting each other and keep our learning going right through the last four months. Our students are now looking forward to a welldeserved summer break. It’s not been easy for everyone though.

SAINT AIDAN’S (cont) Students have missed seeing their friends, and online work can’t ever replace being in a classroom learning with your teacher. Parents have found out that having their children working at home all day can be quite a challenge, especially as they balanced their needs with their jobs and their other commitments. Some of our families have been directly affected by COVID-19, and tragically have lost relatives to this horrible virus. We should also remember our key workers and their children – some of them have been in school nearly every weekday since March, including through the Easter holiday.

We are now really, really looking forward to getting back to school in September. Some students and even some staff members complain about having to go into school from time to time, but not being able to go in has made us appreciate Saint Aidan’s so much more. School will have to be a bit different in September so that we can keep everyone safe, but we will all be back together learning and I for one can’t wait! Andy Smith Headteacher
CARTER’S CHARITY NEWS When this edition of Focus Magazine comes out, school will be closed, and we are all reflecting on a very strange school year while looking forward with hope for the next. At the end of term, it was with very strong emotions that we said goodbye to our Y6 leavers. Most of them had been in school for the last few weeks, but some did not have that chance to say their final goodbyes due to family health issues or concerns. All 28 of them will be heading up the hill to St Aidan’s and we hope to welcome them back as a group to say a proper farewell and good luck. As with every year, we are also saying goodbye to a small number of children in Tell them you saw their advert in the Over Wyre Focus

CARTER’S CHARITY NEWS (cont) other year groups as they move house or change priorities, with a number of others making the opposite journey as they move to Carter’s in September. Also leaving us, albeit temporarily, is Mr Holland. He has been asked to take on the temporary role of Deputy Head at a school in Cumbria and we will certainly miss him. We thank him for the wonderful contribution he has made to our school over the last eight years and wish him all the best. We also look forward to his planned return in 12 months. The last five months of the school year have been a testing and trying time for everyone, adults and children, families and colleagues. Carter’s has risen to the challenge and met adversity and doubt with confidence, care and hard work. Every single member of the school team deserves praise and credit for their efforts and, as headteacher, I am very proud of the whole school community. At
this point I do want to give a special mention to our premises team, Mr Harris and Mrs Ward. They have been absolutely dedicated to maintaining a healthy and hygienic environment for all of us to work in. They, as much as anyone, deserve their break this summer! September will bring its own challenges with continued uncertainty as to what school will be like and how we will be able to run. We have put strong plans in place to welcome back all of our children and families, especially our new starters who start their Carter’s journey with little steps of discovery. The plans will mean that school might look and act a little differently but underneath it all, we remain focussed on the individual with their needs, strengths and potential. All children going into Years 1 to 6 have received a pack with information and support for them to prepare themselves for the new school year.

CAR PARKING BOOST Longer Car Parking Boost for Town Centre Trade Wyre Council has extended parking stays to help boost town centre trade. For the next two months parking times will be extended by an hour in Poulton on Mondays, Fleetwood on Tuesdays, Cleveleys on Wednesdays and Garstang on Thursdays. Parking on all Wyre Council’s long stay car parks on the relevant day will be extended so that a £1 ticket will give you two hours parking and £2 ticket will give you four hours.
On Rough Lea Road in Cleveleys which is a short stay car park, a £1 ticket will be increased to two hours and a £2 ticket will allow you to park for three hours. Councillor Roger Berry, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services and Community Safety at Wyre Council comments, ‘As part of our recovery plan we are working closely with businesses to ensure that our high streets reopen safely. ‘We know how difficult this last few months has been for businesses and we want to encourage people back to our town centres, whilst adhering to government guidance to stay safe. ‘This extra time will give people the chance to spend more time in our shops and cafes and hopefully give local businesses a bit of a boost. ‘I would also encourage local people to buy

The joint Chair, Lewis Thompson and Mike Jenner organised a series of six internal competitions. The images entered in the first four of these competitions had to be taken within the confines of the photographer’s property. The last two, with restrictions to travel being relaxed slightly, were a little more open. The response to the competitions has been good and members of the club could vote for the best (in their opinion) top five places. However, with a chink of light at the far end of the tunnel, and it is a long one, the committee organised a half day (3 hour) visit to Garstang on Wed 22nd July. This was the first of three such visits over the summer period. The final two have yet to be decided upon. Images taken on these three visits will form the basis of the Events Cup 2020. Any member wishing to take part should inform the club’s chair via email. As with many other voluntary organisations we aim to follow the relevant health and safety recommendations and these can be found on our website given below. GARSTANG HISTORICAL SOCIETY As yet there are no plans to resume the monthly meetings of Garstang Historical Society.
If you are a member, and have not given us your email address, but wish to do so so you can receive these updates, please send an email to: garstanghistorical@ gmail.com
This will be the case until there is clear advice from the government that meetings can resume safely.
A programme for future meetings has not yet been drawn up due to on-going uncertainties, but speakers on historical topics from Lancashire and Cumbria have indicated they will be pleased to speak to our society when more normal circumstances prevail.
Even when the situation becomes more clear we will have to take into account any continuing restrictions / safety measures required by the management of our meeting venue (Garstang United Reformed Church and its neighbouring hall). We will continue to send out information on regional history matters to those members whose email address appears on our database.
In the meantime we would draw the attention of members and others to a useful local Facebook page which carries regular articles and old photographs of Garstang and district. It is called ‘Garstang Good Old Days’ and is recommended. Anthony Coppin

BEN WALLACE MP Weather wise, I had high hopes for a good summer earlier in the year but, now I am not convinced we will get the long, hot summer I had hoped for, although I will try to be optimistic.
The reality is, schools have never closed and they have been working extremely hard often delivering alternative ways of working for those pupils at home as well as teaching pupils from key workers’ households on site.
As we continue to work our way through these unprecedented times, we have all seen many acts of kindness.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all school staff who, even during these difficult times, are looking after the education of the young people and I sincerely hope many of you will get a summer break, although I know summer schools will be taking place.

Covid 19 & Loneliness
I have mentioned many key workers and the outstanding job they are doing in this column previously. I would just like to bring your attention to the hard working school staff throughout the constituency and beyond.
As restrictions ease and people are asked to be careful but go back to some form of normality, many of us are very conscious of the possibility of Covid-19 spikes and indeed a second wave. We are all trying to balance this with more contact with friends and family.
There is a great deal of talk around schools Many older people have been affected badly re-opening and adapting to the new normal. by this virus and those who live alone have

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) been hit particularly hard. Many have been cut off from friends and family and even stopped from nipping out to the shops where they would normally come into contact with others on a daily basis. I believe this pandemic has highlighted the real issue of loneliness and isolation especially in older people. This issue has come to our attention for obvious reasons but even before Covid-19 loneliness was a real problem. As a society we are now maybe more aware of how it can affect people and I am hopeful that as a result we can target it better, even if that is only being aware of an older person who lives on their own and checking on them now and again or just having a chat. Scams There is a great deal of goodwill within our communities especially during the current emergency but unfortunately, even during these difficult times, there are a few people who are out to take advantage. I have recently been in touch with Trading Standards here in Lancashire who have informed me of several scams some, using Covid-19. For example, there have been reports of scam phone calls where people are being offered face masks, cleansing gel and gloves. One resident was offered these products and the caller asked for her address then stated the cost would be £29 and asked for her bank details. Please remember, people should not give their bank details over the phone in this way. Nationally, reports have been received by Action Fraud and Trading Standards of fraudsters seeking to exploit the pandemic by claiming to be raising funds for charity. Make sure the charity is genuine before giving any financial information.

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) The advice is never to give your details over the phone, never click on links on suspicious looking, unsolicited text messages and never to give your details on a website which does not look secure or official. Remember to look out for the padlock, which is displayed in the address bar when you are on secure websites. Check that the sites are official, for example all Government websites should have a gov.uk address. Trading standards are also warning about rogue traders. In the Chorley area an elderly person agreed to have their gutters cleaned and two ridge tiles re-pointed for nearly £400. A few weeks later the same traders returned, offering to pressure wash their drive, charging a similar amount of money for a job that did not take very long. In another case in Thornton Cleveleys, a resident agreed to have some minor roofing repairs carried out by cold callers, once the work had started the traders began to find further faults, escalating the job and the price. The advice is you should never agree to work from cold callers on the doorstep and always do your research. Make sure you have a valid address of a trader before agreeing to a contract. If anyone receives suspicious text messages, they should not click on any accompanying links, and report them to Action Fraud by contacting 0300 123 2014 or visiting www. actionfraud.police.uk To reduce telesales calls join the Telephone Preference Service on 03450 700707. Many telephone service providers can also offer help to reduce the number of scam calls you receive. Trading Standards advice is to always say no to cold callers. The Safe Trader Scheme can help you find a trader in your area, contact 0303 333 1111 or go to www.safetrader.org.uk You can report rogue traders, scams or get advice from the
