GARSTANG PAINTING GROUP On Sat 1st June members should collect their unsold paintings from the Arts Centre after the Jean Grange Exhibition closes. It was a very successful exhibition during which the public have voted for their favourite picture. The winner will be announced next month so watch this space! June’s activities commence with a demonstration by Susan Fryer of Pastels, entitled ‘Fox’ - most intriguing, particularly in view of the fact that pastels are receiving a growing following and interest from many members of the Group. This members only demonstration takes place on the first meeting of the month, Wed 5th June. During June, many of our members will be working on their entry for the Painting Group’s own Member’s Exhibition. Entries must be handed in by Sat 29th June. The exhibition will open to the public on Tues 2nd July at the
Garstang Arts Centre. Also during June, the busy Painting Group members will be preparing paintings for exhibition at the Barnacre Festival when paintings are on show as part of the church decoration. They will be for sale over the weekend of Sat 6th July and Sun 7th July as well as helping to enhance the church’s own attractive display on the theme of ‘Music’. The entries must be handed in on Wed 3rd July. And so the year continues with even more interest and colourful activity each Wednesday afternoon at the Garstang Arts Centre. GARSTANG IN BLOOM Both May and June are the busiest of all months for the Bloom team, just like it is if you garden at home. Perennial plants and shrubs need tidying and pruning, seedlings and cuttings need potting on and, after the risk of frost has gone, the summer bedding can be planted out. Meanwhile, of course, the weeds continue to grow and need attending too! This year, we have had the extra but delightful job of preparing the new Norah Hoyles Memorial garden at the top of the High St. Plants have been carefully chosen to suit the shady and rather dry soil under the large tree that is already present there. The canopy of the tree has been raised to introduce more light to the area and there is a noticeable difference as a result. The two signs have been relocated and the disused telephone box removed. We hope that you like the work we have done so far.
Thank you to all those who supported our plant stall, either by buying or bringing along plants to sell. We raised over £400 which makes a brilliant contribution to our funds. Without the generosity of local businesses and people, our group simply wouldn’t be able to function. The Royal Horticultural Society Britain in Bloom have announced the judging dates for Garstang. They are: Tues 2nd July for the North West Competition and Wed 7th Aug for the National Competition. If you would like to help us prepare for these two important dates, please come along to one of our gardening sessions. We meet every Wednesday evening at 7:00pm at the car park on the High St. Gill Bergman

Camping costs £70 per tent/caravan from Friday to Sunday, inclusive of free entry to the show for two people. FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES
Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?
Dr Finlay Sutton
If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.
Brenda’s Testimonial
Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

GARSTANG MEDICAL PRACTICE Carers’ Week It’s Carers Week from Mon 10th June Sun 16th June. Carers’ Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don’t think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support. For more information including how to get involved, visit their website www. carersweek.org/ If you are a carer, let us know, so we can do all we can to ensure you are accessing the support you need. Self Care Self care is about keeping fit and healthy, understanding when you can look after yourself, when a pharmacist can help, and when to get advice from your GP. If you have a long-term condition, self-care is about understanding that condition and how to live with it. Further information is available at www.fyldecoastccgs.nhs.uk/localservices/selfcare/

Building Community with People with Learning Disabilities.
As a practice, our patients’ views are very important to us. We have a Patient Group that meets bi-monthly to provide an opportunity for you to discuss with us how we can develop and shape our services to best meet our patients’ needs. If you would like to join our group, please visit our website at www. garstangmedicalpractice.nhs.uk/ppg.htm for more information, or ask at reception. Alternatively, you are more than welcome to join our next meeting on Thurs 11th July at 3:00pm, in our health education room, which is situated opposite the lifts. We hope you see this as an invitation to increase your understanding of how the surgery is run and to get involved with health care within your community. Hannah Routh (01995) 607399
L’Arche was founded by Jean Vanier in 1964 when he invited two men to leave the mental institution in which they were living and share their lives with him in a small house near Paris. Gradually more communities were founded around the world by people inspired by Jean’s work. L’Arche believes that people with learning disabilities have a great deal to contribute to society and by living in intentional community with diversity and difference we all open ourselves up to be challenged and to grow. Over the last fifty years we have learnt that the best way to enable this is to create communities with a culture of shared lives between people with and without learning disabilities, from which we can work together to build a more humane society.

Garstang Ukulele Group Ukulele Wars During the late 19th century there was a rift between two groups of fervent ukuleleans. In 1876 several skirmishes were fought over the introduction of a 5th string. In Halifax, Josiah Barnabas Stringfellow had commissioned 25 new soprano ukuleles, each with an extra string and he proposed to set up the Yorkshire Ukulele Orchestra to play these new instruments at events throughout the north of England.
While few people in Yorkshire cared much about the sound of their music, when this orchestra was booked to play in Preston there was considerable discontent. Cllr Thackeray Rollingbottom expressed his outrage and formed a militia to prevent the Yorkist ukuleleans from entering the town. However, Stringfellow had been warned of Rollingbottom’s intentions and he formed his own militia to protect his players on their treacherous journey over tops. Inevitably the two met at Todmorden and took up positions on either side of the Rochdale Canal. For three days and nights in July 1876 the two militias camped on either side of the canal and shouted obscenities across the water. Passing bargees reported the uproar to be fuelled by local ales and hard spirits. While little physical contact took place, there was a lot of mud (and worse) slinging across the canal which did cause a certain degree

CAT SMITH MP Hello everyone. If you haven’t already heard, I’m delighted to reveal that Blackpool Transport has agreed to reinstate the Sunday 2C bus service between Knott End and Blackpool.
arranged a monthly away-day picnic on the bus during the summer or could consider events like a monthly Knott End street market to bring people into the area on the bus.
The service starts on Sun 23rd June and will run hourly – with the first one leaving Knott End at 9:30am and the last one leaving at 6:30pm – and not only that but we’ll be able to travel in luxury on a new iconic Palladium bus fitted with WiFi, e-leather seating and wood effect flooring!
It’s been a top priority for me to liaise with Blackpool Transport to bring this service back and I’d like to thank Managing Director Jane Cole for her support in making this happen. The service will be reviewed monthly during the summer season. Please ensure Blackpool Transport continues to be able to run the service by regularly using it.
It’s important to highlight that this service will return on the basis of ‘use it or lose it’. It’s incredibly important therefore that we take advantage of this service, maybe ditch the car for the day and make the most of a relaxing journey between here and the tourism capital of the country, stopping on the way via the hospital.
There is of course another reason why I’m so keen for all my constituents to be able to access public transport. For a long time, I’ve been deeply concerned about the damage to our environment which is why I’ve opposed the gas storage development, why I’ve opposed fracking and why I’ve championed renewable energy schemes.
It would be great if the local community

CAT SMITH MP (cont) off the road, reduces harmful emissions, improves our air quality and alleviates traffic congestion and noise. Recently I spoke in Parliament supporting Labour’s motion to declare an environment and climate emergency. I’m pleased that our motion has led to our being the first country in the world to do so. Every morning, hundreds of my constituents get into their cars and drive to access jobs and education. Given a reliable, low carbon alternative I know many would jump at the chance of leaving their car at home – but that simply isn’t possible. The Government needs to get serious about investing in sustainable transport for communities like Over Wyre and Fleetwood so that people can switch to public transport. That means rebalancing our transport spending towards the North West and bringing back into use disused transport links such as no sam me F ob pl asu ree lig ing res at se , f io rv re e n es ice t & i m Carpets • Amtico at es Laminate • Cushion Vinyl
the Fleetwood branch line to give people the chance to use greener alternatives. Harnessing the power of wind and water has huge potential to transform the Lancashire coastline into a true energy coast. Hydro, wind, and solar energy industries have the potential of providing thousands of skilled, highly paid jobs, which will transform the employment prospects for our young people, while providing for our energy needs. During May on my website I highlighted the work of the NSPCC, the charity that supports children who have suffered abuse. Child abuse can take many forms. It can be emotional, physical, sexual or a lack of love and attention through neglect. And it can happen to any child, in any family, in any place or online. Abuse often happens over a period of time, rather than as a one-off event, and can have

I recently visited one of the foodbanks in my constituency. It can’t be a coincidence that the numbers of foodbanks has risen as average incomes have gone down. The latest research shows in-work poverty is rising faster than employment. Many people are trapped in low paid, insecure work and

70% of children in poverty now live in working families. Teachers and other educational professionals recently reported a significant increase in the visibility of child poverty in schools and colleges, with many witnessing distressing examples of child deprivation and hunger. A survey of educational professionals by the National Education Union found that 91% believe rising levels of child poverty is having a devastating impact on children’s learning. The Trussell Trust supports a nationwide network of 1,200 food banks. Between April 2017 and March 2018 the food banks in their network provided more than 1.3 million emergency food supplies to people in crisis, a 13% increase on the previous year. Research from the Trussell Trust indicates that more than 14 million people are living in poverty in the UK – including 4.5 million children. I know there are people in Over Wyre

OUT RAWCLIFFE OVER 60’S CLUB The AGM of the Out Rawcliffe Over 60’s took place at the Village Hall on Tues 7th May, and started with 32 members sitting down to some delicious hotpot and apple pie. John Ireland welcomed the members, and gave out apologies from absentees. He brought to mind the fact of it being a sad year due to the loss of four longstanding members. They are all sadly missed. Jane Webster presented her report, stating that the Club is doing well. Annual subscriptions and monthly meeting entrance fees will be kept at the same level as last year. Members were made aware that the membership renewals are now due. Officers were all re-elected for another year and three members were elected onto the committee. The evening continued with ten games of dominoes and prizes were presented to the winners. Last month’s trip to Ena Mill and Golden Days Garden Centre was a great success. Make a note on the calendar for the trip to Kielder Dam on Thurs 27th June. Usual pickup points and times. Following the raffle, the evening was brought to a close. Appreciation was expressed for all the help given on the night and for the donated raffle prizes. John wished everybody a safe journey home. The next meeting will be on Tues 4th June 7:00pm at the Village Hall. Look forward to seeing you. Jane Webster (01253) 700425

I have written in the past about both Windows XP and Windows Vista, which became obsolete in 2014 and 2017 respectively. It’s now time to start thinking about Windows 7 as well, as there will be no more security patches or bug fixes for that from next January.
So what, you may be wondering. Well, for Located in Pilling covering the Over Wyre area one it probably means that your Windows 7 machine is up to ten years old and is therefore getting a little long in the tooth! (Windows 7 was introduced in October 2009 and was replaced by Windows 8 in August 2012.) It also means that it will then be at increasing risk of security problems as some of the ‘bad guys’ will be specifically targeting their viruses at old systems when they find a security hole which they know Microsoft will not be fixing. You could also have problems if you buy a new piece of equipment to connect to the computer (printer, scanner, camera etc) as not all new devices will work properly with All aspects of plumbing maintenance Windows 7. If your machine is at the younger end of the age scale and in fine physical shape, you can check whether it meets the minimum requirements to run Windows 10. If it can, then you could consider buying and installing the latest operating system. 3. BEN WALLACE MP With summer around the corner and the weather improving, I am delighted to continue to have the opportunity to travel around the constituency. I always take on board the views and concerns of local residents when I meet or correspond with them and this is reflected in my work at the House of Commons. I also travel around the county of Lancashire to visit groups, charities and organisations which provide a service to our constituency. visit is how outstanding the staff and the facility are and the amazing service it provides to the families, children and young people it cares for. The staff undertake such important and difficult work, with great professionalism and compassion. The visit was a truly humbling experience, which I will always remember. My mailbag continues to highlight many local issues to me. I am pleased that re-surfacing work and major patching has been carried out and is continuing on the A588. Often with better roads come more traffic and the fact that safety has to keep up, so with that in mind I am dealing with many requests for crossings and traffic calming measures. While additional highway safety is a matter for the local highways authority, I do highlight concerns to Lancashire County Council and work closely with the local Councillors. One of my most enjoyable duties as the Member of Parliament for the area is to

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) welcome Gala Queens and their families to Parliament, to thank them for the role they play in our local communities. I have met with Nell Moxham, the Catterall Gala Queen, and Elsie Grubb, the Nateby Gala Queen, recently. As the summer approaches I would like to wish all those involved with the galas and fetes the best of luck and I hope they have enjoyable community celebrations. Being an ex-soldier myself, please remember it is Armed Forces Day on Sat 29th June. Recently I have met with constituents who are concerned about Lyme disease, a dibilitating disease which has been hitting the headlines recently. Lyme disease is the fastest growing vector-borne disease and can be caught in urban parks and back gardens, as well as in the countryside. It is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by infected ticks. To find out more please go to: www.nhs.uk/conditions/lyme-disease
I continue to meet residents at my advice surgeries to discuss a wide range of issues. Please remember if you would like to attend one of my surgeries, the most effective way to contact me is by email, with a brief description of the issues you wish to raise and your contact details. It is worth bearing in mind that I can often offer assistance without the need for a meeting. As in previous months, national issues continue to fill my mailbag, please remember I am here to represent you and your views are important to me so please keep them coming. If I can be of any assistance to you please ring my Office at the House of Commons on 02072 195 804 or my Constituency Office on (01995) 672977, email me at wallaceb@ parliament.uk or write to me at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA. This is exactly what it says on the tin - a mission driven solution to provide safety for women and a sustainable income for families living on or below the poverty line.
We’ve started our new Soroptimist year and we are joined this year by two new members eager to share in the work we do. Think Pink Sri Lanka One of the items considered last month was the choice of charity to support with our main

Our goal this year and for the next year or two, is to try and raise in excess of £3,000 to purchase a pink Tuk Tuk. ROTARY Rotary Helps Garstang Community Academy Students with their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
comforts. To achieve this, they need tents, cooking stoves, sleeping bags, suitable clothing, rainwear, footwear and food to sustain them. In addition, they need a large rucksack to carry all the gear!
Garstang Community Academy will have taken approximately 600 students through the DofE Award of which some 100 students are currently working towards achieving.
Most students come away with fantastic memories of the first time they camped with their friends.
The Award has substantial international credibility for colleges, universities and future employers. Students who take up this opportunity gain first-hand life skills – such as planning, organising, sticking with an activity no matter what and team building. The bronze level requires students to undertake a two day and one night journey independent of adults and modern day

Students are encouraged to obtain their own personal clothing and footwear, but many find it difficult to access the specialised equipment such as tents, cooking equipment and rucksacks. In the past the Academy borrowed this equipment from Lancashire County Council but due to changes at LCC, it is no longer available. Since the loss of this facility the Academy has been able to obtain enough tents and rucksacks to satisfy their needs. However, there was a major shortfall in the

availability of cooking stoves so the Academy approached us to see if Rotary could sponsor the supply of ten Trangia cooking stoves at a cost of £70 each.
Cardiac Risk In The Young
A joint meeting was held and the Academy provided details of their work to date on the Bronze Award complete with video data. It was provisionally agreed to provide sponsorship but it was necessary to seek support from the Rotary District which deals with over 70 Rotary Clubs throughout Cumbria and Lancashire. The arrangement was fully agreed at the end of April. In May a final external dry run for students taking the bronze award this year was held on the sports field. This involved pitching tents and cooking an evening meal on the Trangia cooking stoves. Members of Rotary were invited to attend this activity. The Academy Principal, Alasdair Ashcroft, welcomed the guests from the Garstang Rotary Club and said ‘The school governors, myself, my colleagues and the students are most grateful for the generosity displayed by Rotary in sponsoring the supply of the specialized camping stoves. They will be used by students undertaking this award for many years to come.’
Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund Well, it’s almost summer! Although we may have been quiet for a little while in this magazine the fund has been extremely busy with events and behind the scenes activity. A wee trip to Scotland in April gave us the opportunity to meet up for coffee and cake with Mike Coleran who staunchly cycled from the Isle of Wight to Inverness in 14 days whilst experiencing all four seasons during his adventure. Raising an incredible £4,800+, Mike’s original plans to cycle to the Isle of Lewis were scuppered when the ferry to South Uist was changed to a winter only service! Undeterred, plan B came into operation seeing Mike’s travels taking him along the beautiful, but extremely hilly (or should that say mountainous?) Caledonian Canal route.
In reply Rotarian Steve Iles said ‘We are delighted at being able to help the Academy, which is such an important part of our local community. We admire the effort of the members of your staff who provide the necessary assistance, training and supervision for this truly excellent work in pursuit of the Duke of Edinburgh’s award.’ Julie Parkinson - DofE Co-ordinator Garstang Community Academy JParkinson@ garstangcommunityacademy.com Don Goodier, Rotary Public Relations donald.goodier@btinternet.com

CRY (cont) Challenge achieved, Mike was welcomed back to Garstang with a get together of family and friends at St Helen’s church café (By the way, did you know cakes for CRY are sold at the café each week?). Well done Mike! On behalf of the young people who can now have their hearts tested free of charge – all 96 of them – thank you - it’s an amazing achievement and every credit to you and those who so generously supported and sponsored your journey. April should also have seen Matthew celebrate his 30th birthday so to mark the occasion Zoe, Krystal and I decorated 30 pebbles, each with a memory of Matt and we have placed them in 30 places that were a part of Matt’s life. It is our hope that these memories of Matt will travel far and wide to places he can now never go; that they will brighte=n someone’s day as he brightened ours and that they may spread a little

ARE MOBILE PHONES SAFE? Let us look in a little more detail at what goes on with those amazing and addictive little pieces of technology. Did you know that a well known phone manufacturer says in it’s instructions to use the phone six inches away from your head? If this is the case what is it they are concerned about? Phones emit electro magnetic fields or EMFs and the evidence for what they do or don’t do to us is controversial. The truth is there are many concerns of what these devices do to us. Over 240 scientists and doctors who have published research about EMFs have appealed to the United Nations calling for urgent action to reduce our ever growing EMF exposuresand have asked for a moratorium on the roll-out of 5G citing the serious risks to human health and the environment. Brussels
Are you using a product or service from an advertiser?
ARE MOBILE PHONES SAFE? (cont) has already banned the roll out of 5G. Published peer reviewed science already indicates that the current wireless technologies of 2G, 3G and 4G – in use today with our cell phones, computers and wearable tech – creates radiofrequency exposures which pose a health risk to humans, animals and the environment. Scientists are cautioning that before rolling out 5G, research on human health effects urgently needs to be done first to ensure the public and environment are protected. My advice to you would be to keep your phone away from your body at all times. Switch it to airplane mode at night and switch off your router at night too. Did you know wifi is banned in French primary schools due to concerns over what it may do to children? In addition, good health food shops should have in ‘energy dots’ which you can place
on your phone and they reduce the harmful element of the EMFs without affecting your phone signal. Have a look, they even sell one you can put in your home to protect everything in a 90 metre radius. Nick Tofalos (01995) 602833
