HEALTH ADVICE A piece of research came out and was widely publicised in the media in the last month or so. The main headlines from it were that probiotic supplements do not work. Lazy journalism and headline grabbing words announced that we may as well throw all these supplements in the bin. I delved into the research to see exactly what was being said rather than taking my knowledge from journalists who, it seems more and more these days, are expressing an opinion rather than reporting facts. I found that this research was only carried out on 25 people. This is a tiny group to extrapolate anything major. Not only that but they were 25 healthy people. The fact they were healthy is the key to a major flaw in the research. Why? Because if
you are healthy your body should be working at its optimum. Taking supplements will not make you MORE healthy. You are either healthy or not, therefore, probiotics will simply add bacteria for a while that may be useful but they will not enhance your health when you are in good health. Our body does not have an extra healthy mode for this would be a waste of important resources. Bear in mind that health is different from fitness - we can get fitter, stronger, faster but we cannot work up more health. Of course if you are ill then you can become healthier and most of the time this can be done with changes in your behaviour rather than getting drugs from the doctor. For over a hundred years we osteopaths have repeatedly observed and understood that our gut is vital for so many illnesses from our mental health to auto-immune problems and much more. This has been ignored and even mocked by mainstream health professionals for decades but not anymore. Enormous research is coming out showing how vital our digestive system is to all aspects of our health. This is why declaring war on bacteria with antibiotics has been, for many people, disastrous with them trapped in a round of chronic infections. I’ve seen countless examples of recurrent cystitis from the immune system damage caused by antibiotics because the cause of such problems is not simply some bacteria going wrong. Antibiotics should be last resort medication, not frontline instant use drugs. If you have an infection your body, most of the time, given the right conditions such as rest, wholesome real nutrition (as opposed to take away food and ready meals) and gentle movement where possible, will clear up most infections without any need for drugs.

HEALTH ADVICE (cont) I cannot stress enough the importance of rest when you are feeling unwell - most of us do not moderate our behaviour, soldiering on at work, taking something to mask the problem such as an anti-inflammatory or a paracetamol based remedy. These do not cure us but reduce symptoms so we carry on and this can cause further illness. Our body has some simple methods to cure us and we seem to want to stop it doing so. The basics are: Inflammation - which causes pain and immobility but is busy repairing all the damage too. So if you take an anti-inflammatory you interfere with repair and end up with recurring problems. And did you know the moment you pop one of these your chance of a heart attack increases from between 30-50% in the month you have taken it? Fever - which raises our core temperature to

kill off the bacteria or virus that is causing a problem. So if you take paracetamol or calpol you suppress this protection and end up getting more illness down the line. Vomiting - which removes something the body doesn’t like. Therefore, taking a drug that stops this means whatever toxic substance was inside you still is! Diarrhoea - which is similar to vomiting and protects us but we have got drugs that suppress this, bung us up and leave us vulnerable to more problems. Modern medicine has created all these amazing drugs that suppress our body’s clever healing reactions. But when was the last time you heard a health professional explain all of this and suggest your body knows what it is doing and will fix you. Doctors used to say their role was to amuse the patient while their body got them better - sadly it now appears that intervening with medication is first line defence rather than, for most of us, what should be a last resort. Therefore, ensure your immune system functions well by healthy behaviour and yes, if you’ve had health issues or been on antibiotics or eat processed foods, then probiotics have a vital role to play in helping you and I’m sure many of you will testify how they have helped you - they’ve certainly helped me. Some of the best to try are Natures Aid’s new line which are potent and come with extra vitamins and minerals in them such as Prointimum for pregnant women or Pro-cognitiv for our mental well being. Bio Kult and Optima also produce excellent products. Nick Tofalos

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES
Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?
Dr Finlay Sutton
If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.
Brenda’s Testimonial
Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

In the mid 19th century King David of Hawaii went on a journey around the world seeking out ways of increasing the prosperity of his islands. He invited many people to come and settle in Hawaii and in the 1870’s a number of Portuguese emigrants from Madeira arrived and they brought their small four and five

When they played these the Hawaiians thought the movement of the strings reminded them of jumping fleas (oo-koo-lehleh) and so this became its new name. From the very start the Hawaiians took this funny little instrument to their hearts. In the 1890’s the independence of Hawaii was threatened by American and European businessmen who wished to exploit the islands and by the end of the 19th century Hawaii had been colonised by the USA. During the early 20th century many Americans began to visit and they enjoyed the sounds of the ukulele during their excursions to these islands. They brought the instrument back to the US with them and it soon became part of the popular culture. From there it has found its way back across the Atlantic and to Garstang.

Songbirds
With the bright days of Summer behind us, the Painting Group looks forward to changing our palette colours to autumn shades!
Songbirds is a very friendly ladies group. We do not give performances, just enjoy singing a wide repertoire and welcome those who have never sung in a group before, as well as those who sing well but do not want the commitment of a ‘proper’ choir! We meet every Monday (except Bank Holidays) at 1:30pm. On the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month there will be piano accompaniment and on the 2nd and 4th (& 5th) Mondays we will sing along to CDs/computer. Dates will be on The Arts Centre noticeboard. For more information ring Avril (01995) 602904 or Hilary (01995) 606333. Judy Osborne (01995) 600996
The first actual seasonal exercise will be a Still Life workshop for members on Wed 17th Oct and the subject will be, appropriately ‘Harvest Festival’. No doubt a fine array of flowers, fruit and vegetables will appear as a subject for painting or pastel work! Now that the Ron Coombes Exhibition is over, we are preparing for the Craft Fair Exhibition. Yes it’s non-stop for the Painting Group! Suitable paintings must be handed in by Sat 20th Oct for exhibiting in the Garstang Arts Centre until,- would you believe - the end of the Christmas Fair! Plenty of time to study the paintings and buy an ideal present! So, keep on painting. For more information contact Carolyn Wood (01253) 812270. Bill Barnes

GARSTANG MILLENNIUM GREEN The River Wyre & The Catchment Based Approach United Reformed Church Hall, Croston Road, Garstang Wed 3rd Oct 7:30pm Garstang Millennium Green Trust are pleased to announce this talk presented by Tom Myerscough, Programme Manager for the Wyre Rivers Trust, on the subject of the River Wyre.
Admission is £3.00, payable on entry and includes tea/coffee and biscuits. A raffle will also be held. All proceeds will go towards the upkeep of Garstang Millennium Green (registered charity no. 1079032). We are a small charity that owns and runs the 3.5ha of public open space alongside the River Wyre that comprises Garstang Millennium Green.
The talk will cover the work that is now being done by the Wyre Rivers Trust and its partners to return the river, from Abbeystead to Fleetwood, to a more natural state, resulting in a more resilient river and catchment.
We are run and managed entirely by volunteers and receive no financial assistance from the Local Authority. Dedicated volunteers, who give up a lot of their free time to maintain this area for you to enjoy, carry out all the work on the Green.
Tom says he would like to dispel some of the myths about the river, flooding and land management.
Please support us and come and enjoy an informative evening. Christine Cummins

Participation
We have now held our first meeting, and we were pleased to welcome some new members into our volunteer health group. If you are interested and believe you can provide your time, why not apply to join us in helping to promote health and organise events? Or if you just wish to join a friendly group of volunteers interested in health care,
please call into the Practice to complete an application form. You can be involved as much or little as time allows, nor do you need to attend every meeting. Once your completed form is received, the Practice will undertake a confidential check to ensure you meet the necessary eligibility criteria, e.g. for example you must be resident in the area the Practice provides healthcare to and registered as a permanent patient. The PPG as a volunteer group does not have any involvement in this process, due to Practice/Patient confidentiality. An important point to be aware of - the PPG’s main rule ensures our meetings are not a venue for members to make adverse comments, raise grievances, or make complaints. Nor is it a venue to discuss your particular personal views. Our Terms and Conditions specifically exclude these issues.

GARSTANG MEDICAL (cont) I write this as a number of people, incorrectly, have assumed this is what we are about. It is not. It’s the opposite. Where personal issues arise, no matter what they are, they must be taken up directly with the Practice outside our meetings, using the Patient / practice comment / complaint procedure. News information The National Association of Patient Participation, (NAPP) are, as its name implies, the national body that assists new and existing PPG groups in how to best develop their aims and goals. It also provides guidance and advice on how to promote and run a new PPG, and on utilising best practice. At a recent meeting at our Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) the Fylde & Wyre PPG Chairs discussed the subject of NAPP. This was an important issue.
Regognising that it would be of benefit to our PPG, the Practice Business Team was approached with a request for our PPG group to apply for affiliation with NAPP. We as a PPG are grateful to the Practice for agreeing to sponsor the group and for funding our annual membership costs. This demonstrates we are all working together to provide the necessary clinical services, develop new ideas, improve community healthcare, and provide a conduit for our members to become more involved within the community and the Practice on health related matters. Our PPG has now been accepted by this national organisation. Whilst it isn’t the Practice that is connected to NAPP, it is your PPG that is affiliated. We are one of over 7,000 PPG groups affiliated to this organisation. We look forward

GARSTANG MEDICAL (cont) to the benefits this will bring to our PPG, as it provides the group with the necessary advice, skills, tools, resource material and modules to help us develop further. Our aim as a PPG is to ensure that along with our Practice we are recognised as being the gold standard in promoting community healthcare delivery. Event News We recently supported and attended the Practice’s Heat and Eat event, which was kindly supported financially by Wyre Borough Council. The event was held on Fri 14th Sept and was attended by our much respected older generation. Our next meeting is on Wed 17th Oct. GARSTANG RECORDED MUSIC SOC Peter Kirkham gave our September meeting a relaxed programme with the title ‘Try a Little Tenderness’. His selection opened with the 1920s song of that name, ranged from the Moonlight Sonata to Debussy’s ‘Nuages’ and the Andante of Barber’s Violin Concerto. It concluded with Secret Garden’s ‘Ode to Simplicity’. We were pleased to have a good number of visitors for a very successful evening. On Mon 1st Oct, Jeff Ashcroft will mark the turn from summer to autumn with an evening of music celebrating the seasons. Visitors are welcome as always, admission

Over the past four years local historian Paul G. Smith has given various lectures about the Great War, including the local aspect (based on the names of our town’s fallen on the War Memorial), as well as national and international aspects of the conflict. Sun, 11th Nov, will see the final day of the commemorations, a century to the day when the war was formally ended. To mark this occasion in the life of our country and town, Paul is to give his final two-part lecture of the Great War series with a talk entitled: ‘Victory 1918 - how the Allies Won the War’. The illustrated talk will be in two halves, with a refreshment break between. It will cover the so-called ‘100 Days’, from the Battle of Amiens to the Armistice, and includes references to several local servicemen who died for their country.

ST JOHN’S HOSPICE Bob’s Special Surprise
an RLI employee.

An ex-RAF Chef and St John’s Hospice patient was treated to a special flyover by two RAF Chinooks after a chance meeting with
Robert (Bob) Pickles was in the RLI with his wife and daughter earlier this week, when he got talking to Stuart Hosking-Durn, Head of Resilience and Patient Flow at the RLI. It was just a chance encounter and the conversation moved on to Bob’s time as a Chef in the RAF during the Second World War. As they reminisced, Bob wistfully said how much he would love to feel part of the RAF again. That comment got Stuart thinking about how,
with some of his social media contacts, he might be able to transform such a thought into a reality for Bob. Stuart said, ‘It was lovely to meet Bob and his family and after I left them I got to thinking about what I could do to help in a small way. I appealed to a few groups on social media to see if anything could be done. I never expected the amazing response from all corners of the RAF community, past and present.’ At 1:45pm on Tues 31st July the skies began to thunder as two RAF Chinook helicopters made a special flyover, just for Bob, over St John’s Hospice in Lancaster, as a result of the request from Stuart. Hospice staff, volunteers and patients gathered outside and cheered as the huge aircraft passed by overhead. Sue McGraw, Chief Executive as St John’s Hospice, said, ‘What an honour to be involved in something

ST JOHN’S HOSPICE (cont) like this. You could see how much it meant to Bob and his family. It is a great example of what hospice care looks like, nothing is too much for our patients and people routinely go the extra mile to make wishes like Bob’s come true. We have had weddings, anniversary parties, visiting livestock, but never an RAF flyover! It’s just another unique day at St John’s Hospice!’ As if the flyover wasn’t enough, it has also been arranged for a serving RAF Flying Officer to visit Bob in his home with some RAF souvenirs, as well as two airmen making a special trip to talk to Bob in the coming days. There may well be other RAF surprises in store too. Stuart continued, ‘To see the big smile on Bob’s face today as he proudly waved the Union flag was such an honour. To see the RAF community, old and new, come together like this is inspiring. It is a great example of social media in action for the greater good!’

ST JOHN’S HOSPICE (cont) There has also been a great response from the Lancaster and Morecambe branch of the RAF Association. Welfare Officer David Hodgson answered the call, ‘The RAF Association is all about friendship, and once you have served in the RAF you are a friend for life. We knew a Flying Officer was coming to visit Bob this evening, but we were asked if anyone could go and spend some time with him at the hospice before he goes home. I was delighted to oblige and I have spent the morning getting to know Bob and his family and watched the flyover with them, and it was an absolute honour and a privilege. Bob’s wife Mary and daughter Eloise have been AT Bob’s side while he has been staying at the hospice. Eloise said, ‘After meeting Stuart, I messaged him just to thank him for spending that time with Dad. I never expected it would end with something as
wonderful as this. It is quite overwhelming and such a lovely surprise, I can’t quite believe it. Everyone at the hospice has been great and now Dad is coming home for some well-earned rest.’ And as for Bob, worn out after all the excitement and flag waving, he just had one word that summed it all up - ‘terrific!’. CAT SMITH MP At the beginning of the year many constituents contacted me concerned that their planned operations at Blackpool Victoria Hospital were being repeatedly cancelled. Many had been waiting a considerable period of time for joint replacements such as hips and knees. They described being in considerable pain, immobile and unable to leave the house. I’ve written to the Department of Health on a number of occasions asking for an explanation as to why so many elective procedures had to be cancelled and when they would be re-scheduled. I’ve published the Minister’s response on my website. To see it please visit www.catsmith.co.uk/ latest. In the letter, the Government says hospital managers are already planning for next winter. I very much hope therefore that we don’t see another repeat of last year’s crisis and that managers are being given the funding they need to provide a seamless service during a time of year when we know there will be greater demand.

At the time of writing it’s been revealed that the number of NHS staff vacancies has increased and the growing nurse shortages risk becoming a national emergency. There were 107,743 vacancies in England at the end of June - 41,722 nursing vacancies and 11,576 unfilled posts for doctors. Independent think tank The King’s Fund said growing nurse shortages are ‘symptomatic of a long-term failure in workforce planning.’ They say the NHS is heading for another tough winter. They also report that staff shortages have further been exacerbated by the impact of Brexit and immigration policies.

CAT SMITH MP (cont) NHS Improvement says the rise, the result of increasing demand and high leaving rates, is forecast to continue throughout the financial year. The result of all of this is that we have to employ more temporary staff leading to spiralling costs. Between April and June, NHS trusts spent £805 million on bank staff and an additional £599 million on agency staff. In addition to the staffing crisis, the NHS Improvement Quarterly Monitoring Report has been published confirming the extent of the funding crisis in the NHS – trusts now face an underlying deficit of £4.3bn. On all key performance measures the NHS is struggling to keep up with demand – A&E performance is down and waiting lists are rising. Ahead of the NHS Ten Year Plan this Autumn, Ministers must say how they are going to put NHS finances on an even keel. On a related point its nearly flu season again and it’s really important that everyone eligible should take advantage of the flu jab. The vaccine will be offered to everyone over the age of 65 and eligible adults under the age of 65, including pregnant women and those with long-term health conditions. Children in Year Five will now be offered the vaccine, along with children in Reception to Year Four. The vaccine will eventually be offered to all primary school-aged children. Social workers and frontline healthcare workers are also eligible to receive the vaccine for free. The more of us who take up the opportunity to have the flu jab, the less pressure on the NHS over the winter months. Boundary Changes It’s been proposed that if the changes go ahead Over Wyre would become part of a new, largely rural constituency starting just

Under the plans the number of seats will be reduced to 600 cutting the number of MPs by 50 as we prepare to leave the European Union. The workload of MPs is set to rise after Brexit, with thousands of pieces of important legislation expected to come through Parliament.

A significant number of MP’s are set to vote against the changes. We are ready to work with all political parties to agree an accelerated timetable for a new review. It tells the story of Nell Bamber who falls in love with World War One soldier Fred Poynton. The play brings home the impact of war on the quiet Lancashire villages and towns, including our own area. heartfelt story that unfolds through imagery, words and music.
The story begins in the Forest of Bowland, in 1910. It tells the story of Nell, a 14-year-old girl from Chipping, who lives on Pale Farm with her stepmother, father, brothers and sisters.
True stories are the inspiration behind this production and you can be guaranteed a wonderful evening’s entertainment.
Aged 23, and despite initial strong objections from her parents, Nell marries her love, World War One soldier Fred Poynton D.C.M.
Be prepared to be transported back in time and join us for an unforgettable artistic and musical experience, taking you from the Lancashire hills to the edge of The Great Lakes!
They go on a remarkable journey, leaving Chipping via Macclesfield, across the Atlantic to America on board the Cunard Liner H.M.S. Carmania, starting a new life in New York and then later in Buffalo.
Tickets are available from Garstang Library and cost £10 each. They can be reserved by telephoning 0300 123 6703 or (01995) 602795. If you prefer, you can pay on the door. Refreshments will be included.
The play is based on a true story, adding what all good stories need, a little bit of mystery, a quest for reason and of course a good relishing of romance.

BEN WALLACE MP Summer seems a distant memory as my children are now well into the school term here in North Lancashire and the darker nights are with us again. Looking out of the window, it is hard to believe the threat of a hosepipe ban loomed over us only a few weeks ago, but that is the British weather. Remembrance Celebrations We are already in October and I start thinking about this year’s Remembrance celebrations and the fact that it has been 100 years since the end of the First World War. It is great to see so many churches, schools, local authorities, businesses, etc throughout the constituency putting on displays and remembering the sacrifice of a generation. Armed Forces Having served in the Army myself, (Scots Guards) I am always keen to champion our outstanding Armed Forces which I believe are second to none. I also see the need to support veterans when they leave the services. This is done through the Armed Forces Covenant which all local authorities in Lancashire have signed. The Covenant is a promise by the nation ensuring that those who serve or have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly. With this in mind I was delighted to see recently, the launch of the Lancashire Armed Forces Hub. The hub aims to bring together councils, charities and other organisations who serve the armed forces community in order for them to share best practice and serve the community as effectively as possible. The Hub has been possible thanks to

£150,000 of Government funding and is a joint project between Lancashire County Council, UCLAN, Lancashire Care Foundation Trust and Army HQ NW. The new service will be based at the College for Military Veterans and Emergency Services at UCLAN. Poulton to London Rail Service As you will know I am a keen supporter of a direct Poulton to London rail service. I have recently received a reply from Alliance Rail Holdings detailing their intentions for Great North Western Railway to operate a Blackpool to London Euston service. I am delighted to say that Poulton is a key element in the company’s plans. I am continuing to urge Network Rail to reinstate the longer platform lengths to enable longer trains to stop at Poulton. Get in Touch My mailbag continues to cover a great number of issues from transport to health and planning to the environment both on a national and local level. I am always keen to hear the views of constituents, with this in mind please do not hesitate to contact me using the contact details at the end of this article. I believe meeting as many residents as possible is extremely important, this gives me the opportunity to discover the issues which affect them on a daily basis so please get in touch if you would like me to visit your business or local group. If I can be of any assistance to you please ring my Office at the House of Commons on 0207 219 5804 or my Constituency Office on (01995) 672977, email me at wallaceb@ parliament.uk or write to me at The House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA. COMPUTER ADVICE I’m often asked why a computer seems to be running slow, and there’s never a simple answer to this. Sometimes it is a straight forward case of an old machine unable to cope, but even new computers can be slow. Over the years, these boxes have become ever more complex combinations of metal and electronics. They can do so much that they often seem to have a mind of their own – and a temperament to go with it! When you switch a computer on there are a million and one different things suddenly springing to life and demanding to check for updates or run scans. 1. Firstly some very basic checks – has the power come on, does my screen work, have I got a keyboard, how much memory have I got and is it all working? Do I have a hard drive and do I know where the operating system is? Assuming it gets
the right answers and finds the operating system, it then hands over control. 2. The operating system (Windows 10 or whatever) starts all the other programs and then checks for Windows updates, tries to install updates, runs clean-up jobs after updates, runs background checks for problems and performs regular tidy-up jobs. 3. Your security/anti-virus package checks for updates, installs updates and runs various scans of the system to make sure that no nasties have snuck in. 4. If you do online banking, there may be another security package which many banks insist you install (Trusteer Rapport) which will also check for updates and do some background checking work when you switch on. 5. Other background programs such as Java, FlashPlayer and Adobe Reader

COMPUTER ADVICE (cont) will check for updates and then either install them automatically or ask for your permission to do so. 6. Programs which you have installed to use yourself will check for updates – eg. iTunes, Google Chrome, Microsoft Office, Firefox, Skype, Spotify, printers. Again sometimes these will get installed automatically and sometimes you will be nagged to do the update. 7. Other programs which you didn’t install yourself and probably haven’t even noticed are there because they came with the computer may also be running in the background and doing things, eg. CyberLink Media Suite 8. Once the computer is running, there will probably be a program from the hardware manufacturer also checking for updates for some of the core components. All of these are the good guys (although you could turn some of the ones in 6. and 7. off if you don’t need them) – if you’ve managed to download a disreputable toolbar or something worse, there may be other less beneficial programs doing stuff behind the scenes. So what to do? Computers need to be switched on regularly, and given plenty of time to complete all their background jobs. Don’t dive in to check your emails as soon as the desktop appears, give it a minute or two to finish getting ready.

GARSTANG SOROPTIMISTS Women Inspiring Action, Transforming Lives Back to Work Our first meeting back after the Summer brought a very enthusiastic young man called Chris who came to tell us all about St John’s Hospice in Lancaster. The work they do to provide care, hope, and support for anyone with a life limiting illness (not just cancer) is amazing. St Johns has an in-patient unit, a day care/ respite centre, advice services and emotional support, and the Hospice at Home team, yet two thirds of their funding is covered by donations and fundraising events ranging from coffee mornings to parachute jumps. They have 480 volunteers who help keep
everything running smoothly and Chris was especially keen to tell us about the first Garstang Charity Ball ‘Winter Wonderland’ which he is organising on Sat 10th Nov at the Garstang Country Hotel and Golf Centre. We’ve already decided to try out the Courtyard Café for our next monthly lunch! For further information see www.sjhospice.org.uk Future Plans We have also been discussing recent and future activity for the club – some of the upcoming activities or special dates include a petition to support women tea pickers in India, an Anti-Slavery Awareness weekend in Blackburn in September, Breast Cancer Awareness Month for October, World Food Day on Tues 16th Oct and the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence which starts on Sun 25th Nov. Looks like we’re going to be busy. Conference Time Later this month some of our members will also be attending the annual Federation Conference, which this year takes place in Liverpool. This is always an exciting few days and we are looking forward to some excellent speakers as usual to inspire and enthuse members, as well as taking the opportunity to meet up with old friends and make new ones from around the world.
42
At the end of the conference the current Federation President Sue Biggs will hand over responsibilities to the next one. Sue is virtually a local lass, as she belongs to Burnley Soroptimists, and we have all been very proud to support her during this presidential year. BackPack Project We continue to send off batches of backpacks just as quickly as we can fill them. Currently we are most short of bags, exercise books, toothpaste, pens, pencil sharpeners, and pencil cases.

Rick is course leader for the BSc (Hons) Archaeology degree. He specialises in the Neolithic and Bronze Age archaeology of Britain, with particular interests in the archaeology of caves and in pottery. He also teaches later prehistory on many of the fieldwork modules. Each year, between 2011 and 2015, staff and students from UCLan left the campus behind and headed to the hills above Whitewell for their summer fieldwork project. A combination of field surveys, excavations and research during that time uncovered evidence of nomadic hunter-gatherers and early farmers in the Stone Age, along with Bronze Age burial sites and Iron Age

CARDIAC RISK in the YOUNG (CRY) The Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund In recent weeks Matt’s Fund hit the headlines when it was established that an astounding £100,000 had been sent to CRY in his memory! A wonderful accomplishment I’m sure you’ll agree and we wish we could personally thank each and every one who has contributed, but with so much support from so many folks that would be an impossibility. There has been a great deal of creativity with numerous, wonderfully diverse activities and fundraisers from sponsored events, treasure hunts, sales, quizzes and discos to race nights, cakes bakes, collections, challenges and chalk drawings to name just a few. There are those who have donned the t-shirt and been a public face for the fund and countless folks who have supported in the background, unseen and unheard, all working together, being pro-active in raising awareness of the fabulous work that CRY do and helping protect the cardiac health of young people. To all who have helped, however you have helped, we thank you. Over the summer months the Garstang Scarecrow Festival with the assistance of the vivacious Team ShazzAnn and Team Y3P have been extremely busy raising an amazing £18,380 which was split between Macmillan in the North West and Matt’s Fund @ CRY. Towers and Gornall also held fundraisers at the local agricultural shows, raising hundreds for several local charities, including CRY and a number of charities, including ourselves, had the opportunity to take part in the Kepple Lane Fun Day in the middle of September what an extraordinary community we live in! No wonder Matt was so proud to be a part of it. Thank you one and all. Oh, and for those of you who are wondering - the Koala and joey were visiting friends in
Perth but now have a new home in Garstang! As autumn arrives the folks at the core of Team Matt have a chance to catch their breath for a week or two (though I know they’ll probably still be beavering away quietly in the background). We are very grateful to friends and family, both near and far, who have stood by our sides from the beginning and who graft and give tirelessly in remembrance of Matthew, and who steadfastly support and promote the work of the fund. Well done Team – you really are truly inspirational – thank you. The first set was nearing it’s end when Gerry, the bass player collapsed and was subsequently taken to hospital. He was checked over and various tests taken. Nothing serious was found to be wrong. The music had been hot and the atmosphere very hot so that was probably a contributory factor. Gerry is fine and was back playing a few days later. Our thanks go to staff of the Tithebarn, patrons and paramedics who assisted Gerry. The Lune Valley Jazz Band will be back to play again at the Tithebarn on Sat 20th Oct so for those of you who missed out on the second set last time and would like to see and hear more of the band please come along and we hope that any excitement will be confined to the music. LANCASHIRE FIRE & RESCUE N18 Garstang The weathers getting more wintery, and what our crew are responding to has changed completely already. Last time we wrote in the Focus, we’d been busy with fires outside and especially with wildfires including Winter Hill. Now is a time of complete change for us, caused by the changing season and the corresponding drop in temperatures. Heating appliances and equipment unused in warmer months are coming out again. Colleagues at our nearest station in Preesall attended two gas leaks and one suspected carbon monoxide poisoning in the last few weeks. Everyone thinks it won’t happen to them, and whilst its very unlikely, the things you can do to reduce the possibility even further are incredibly simple.
Have all gas appliances checked by a Gas Safe engineer every 12 months, or any time additionally if you have any concerns. Electrical appliances and supply have caused 40% of accidental house fires recently. Always check for any damage to the leads on anything you use and only use things like washing machines and tumble dryers when you are at home and not asleep. Our web site www.lancsfirerescue.org.uk/safety/ has lots of other information on safety with plenty of handy hints and advice. Our Community Fire Safety team are out helping make our community safer all the time. If you feel you would benefit from their advice or possibly a visit, please ring 08001 691 125 or select ‘Home Fire Safety Check’ on the website address above. Across the county, there’s an initiative to protect farming communities, and we’ve been at Garstang show and Scorton Game Fair working with Lancashire Constabulary, the Farming Community Network and NFU and we’ll be at local auctions soon. This is a great opportunity to give us and yourselves a head start if there’s an incident on your farm. We do a ‘home safety visit’, we record water sources, access for vehicles, things to watch out for and things to protect. It’s an immensely valuable service and it’s free. To be at the top of the list for a visit, just email my colleague on richardholden@ lancsfirerescue.org.uk The Police are keen to help too and they have rural specialists who can help and advise on any concerns you have including protecting farm machinery and equipment, poaching, data tagging, signage and your local contacts. Lorraine Ellwood, Lancashire Constabulary’s Rural and Wildlife Coordinator will arrange that on (01772) 413935 or email Lorraine. ellwood@lancashire.pnn.police.uk

MARIE CURIE FUNDRAISING GROUP
As it gets wetter, there’s more chance of us assisting with flooding. We’re working closer than ever with Wyre Borough Council and other agencies to ensure the impact of these events is minimised as much as possible.
We are a small group of volunteers based in the Garstang area who have decided to get together to support the amazing work done by our local Marie Curie nursing service.
If you’re interested in what’s being done and what you can do there’s a drop-in event on ‘Winter Preparedness’ on Wed 10th Oct from 4:00pm to approximately 7:00pm at the Civic Centre in Poulton. United Utilities, Environment Agency, Lancashire County Council, Wyre Council Engineers, Care and Repair, Natural England, Flood Safe Project and several of the Flood Action Groups are there. It’s a great opportunity to find what’s being done for your area. We’re holding a car wash in the next few weeks, all the money to go to the Firefighters Charity so please look out for us if you’re passing at the weekend.
Our nurses serve the local community each night, visiting families living with terminal illness and giving respite and care to those going through their hardest times. It costs approximately £20 an hour to deliver this crucial support and we are determined to ensure that this vital work continues. We are looking for new members to help us represent the nurses locally by encouraging and supporting local fundraising, store collections, collection tins and lots more. And have a lot of fun along the way! If this sounds like something you’d like to get involved in, please contact me and we’ll look forward to welcoming you. Danielle Richards 07515 135 423
We need another four people to join us and become firefighters. You need to be available for call out within 5 minutes of our station, during the daytime or on the weekend. This job is a big commitment, but it provides an enormous amount of real achievement and value and the experiences and training you have will make a real difference to your life. All sorts of people are retained firefighters, everyone has different reasons for joining and gets different things out of it. If you’re interested in finding out more, see jobs. lancashirefirerescue.org.uk/retainedfirefighters or visit our station on our drill night, any Monday (except bank holidays) at 7:00pm and ask for Watch Manager Horner. These people are brave, dedicated and from all walks of life. Ladies also ride the bikes. Advanced driving courses are offered and the bikes are fully maintained.
