CATTERALL GARDENING CLUB It was a delight to have an extra special evening visit to the ‘Wedding Wood’ in Inglewhite. The wood was designed and planted by Daphne and Nick Sanders when they asked for trees rather than wedding gifts on the occasion of their marriage and we would like to thank them both for hosting an educational and inspiring visit. In July we also had a Catterall Gardening Club meeting with Jeff Hutchings returning this year to update us on ‘Hardy Orchids The Meadow Project One Year On’. Thank you to Jeff for his expertise which has helped us learn more about hardy orchids in the UK. As always, we would also like to thank everyone who donated raffle prizes, cakes and plants. Catterall gardeners make this a happy group, so please come along and meet Tim Smith from Lytham who returns with hints and tips about ‘Garden Design’ on Tues 21st Aug 7:00pm - 9:00pm at Catterall Village Hall. 18 BAD FATS Are heart problems caused by dairy fats? No. There you go, that was easy wasn’t it? I guarantee you will not clog up your arteries by eating fat from a dairy source. Cream, butter, cheese and any other dairy products categorically do not cause heart disease and do not narrow your arteries. I shall step away from the debate around whether we should be eating dairy for other reasons such as ethics except to point out that for the sake of our environment we should all be consuming far, far less of all animal based products. There are billions of pounds spent on low fat foods and drinks along with the prescribing of statin drugs. This means there are vested interests in encouraging us to keep up with this behaviour. This despite the fact it may even be causing us more harm than eating full fat
products because of the obscene amounts of sugar and weird chemicals contained in these processed approximations of real food. In fact, full fat foods appear to protect us from the risk of a stroke as we get older. What the medics call ‘bad cholesterol’ is now known to have a protective effect against heart disease as we get older. The science behind all this is quite clear and is mentioned in the American Journal of Clinical Medicine, but who wants the facts to get in the way of a good money making scheme? This study showed that people with high levels of ‘bad’ fats were 42% less likely to die from a stroke! This research was done on 3000 volunteers aged 65 and over and crossed a 22 year period. This is as definitive as it gets. So please ditch your weird hybrid ‘spreads’, diet products and fear of fat. We also know that diet drinks actually make people fat! That is because when something sweet hits your taste buds this causes the exact same cascade of effects in your body as if you had eaten sugar. So as you drink your ‘zero’ absurdity of a drink please be aware it has the same effect as drinking the full sugar version. It is one giant con designed to fool you into thinking you’re being healthy. And anyway, since when did grown adults really need to drink sugary or diet sodas? Unless it’s in a gin of course! FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES
Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?
Dr Finlay Sutton
If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.
Brenda’s Testimonial
Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

LANCASHIRE FIRE & RESCUE N18 Garstang It’s been a very busy time for your local fire crew here at Garstang. Whilst we’re normally kept fairly busy, we’ve had weeks of non-stop work. This includes helping out with cover at Lancaster and Morecambe while all their crews were on the moors, a fire in commercial premises, a barn containing 200 tons of hay on fire, a large fire in the open which we tackled together with the farmer as well as one shift on Saddleworth Moors and seven shifts on Winter Hill. On the moors we’ve worked long shifts, and sometimes we’ve been needed to help other crews on our way home. My crew has risen to the challenge and given everything they’ve
got to every job, and like every crew in Lancashire, whenever we could be available there were people needing our help. Throughout the whole of this busy time, the support we’ve received locally and from throughout Lancashire has been brilliant, from the local employers who allowed their staff out of work to play their part, to the support from the community with food and drinks received at our station and at Chorley Training Centre which were a really big help. Over such a large and dangerous area, with a constantly and rapidly changing event it was difficult for the service to get supplies to crews, so having them available to take with us made all the difference. Thanks so much from all of us. In the last issue of Focus, I mentioned wildfires, and this information is still just as important. The warmer weather brings

LANCASHIRE FIRE & RESCUE (cont) everyone outside and it’s now we see grass and moorland fires, problems caused by barbecues, and water rescues. There’s more information and videos on our website at www.lancsfirerescue.org.uk/safety/ safety-advice/ with separate areas for ‘barbecues and chimineas’, ‘water safety’ and ‘wildfires’. It takes just a few minutes to look and it might make a difference. The water safety section has a video about James Goodship. It’s particularly useful for anyone more likely to watch a video on their phone than listen to someone. Surprisingly, drowning is the third most common cause of death amongst young people aged between 10 and 18, and those casualties are most likely to be male. It’s particularly important to get this message across now the school holidays have started. Our two newest recruits have had a unique first two months, but they’ve already proved
themselves to be valuable assets. This job is a big commitment, but it provides an enormous amount of real achievement and value, and the experiences they have will make a real difference to their lives. We still need more local people to complete our crew, especially if you can be available for call out within 5 minutes of our station, during the daytime or on the weekend. All sorts of people are retained firefighters. Everyone has different reasons for joining and gets different things out of it. If you’re interested in finding out more, see jobs. lancashirefirerescue.org.uk/retainedfirefighters or visit our station on our drill night, any Monday (except Bank Holidays) at 7:00pm and ask for Watch Manager Horner. COMPUTER ADVICE This month’s article is really only vaguely computer-related, but hopefully some of you will still find it useful – Summer Travel Advice, courtesy of my much travelled daughter! If you do any travelling abroad and want to use your bank debit or a credit card, don’t forget to tell them of your plans BEFORE you set off - otherwise you may find that your card is blocked from working once you arrive. If you have an app for the bank on your phone you may be able to use that, but make sure you’ve set it up before you leave. Make sure you know all your email and banking passwords etc. – if the worst should happen and you lose your wallet/handbag whilst away, you don’t want to be stuck unable to notify the bank because you can’t remember the security information. And try not to take any more cards than you really need, there’s no point risking losing all of them unnecessarily.
24
If you use somebody else’s computer to log on to either your bank or emails, please make sure you take the tick out of any ‘remember me’ boxes on the login screen. When you’ve finished, log out of the website properly and then close everything down – and clear out the browser cache as well if you can. Using credit cards overseas can be expensive, with exchange rate costs and card fees. It really does pay to research this thoroughly before you go as some banks charge much less than others – but it takes a bit of advanced planning to get one arranged before your trip. When paying for goods or taking cash from a machine, you are usually offered the choice of paying in the local currency or having them do a conversion to pounds for you. Again, think very carefully about this - it is often cheaper to pay in the local currency and let your own bank back home work out the

COMPUTER ADVICE (cont) conversion using better exchange rates. If you are travelling to a country in the European Union, for most mobile contracts you currently don’t need to worry about exorbitant charges for using your mobile phone if you have a contract with inclusive minutes. You can use the minutes, texts and data in exactly the same way as you would back home. (Unfortunately this will no doubt change once we leave the EU.) However, if you are travelling outside the EU then be careful – check out what your provider will charge and consider turning data roaming off to prevent any nasty surprise bills. When it comes to buying your holidays or flights online, you should always use a CREDIT card where possible as this gives some extra financial protection (if the transaction was more than £100). With budget airlines in particular, if you want to choose your own seats, pay for meals, or arrange extra baggage then it’s usually best to do this at the time you buy the flight – doing it later can cost much more. And make sure you get the names right as again there will be costs to change them later – they must match exactly what it shows in the passport. You also need to check-in online and potentially print your own boarding passes before setting off to the airport. Some airlines may have a smartphone app which allows you to do it all on your phone, so check in advance.

The excellent weather has hopefully helped with our photography. Normally people would have paid serious money to get two weeks in the sun but this year has seen glorious weather. The Great Eccleston Show was held on the 14th and 15th July and the sunny weather brought out large crowds. The camera club again took the photographs for the show and one of the images is shown above.

Horses were also prominent as main ring attractions this year at Great Eccleston with youngsters competing in the Pony Club Mounted Games on Saturday and crowds were drawn to the Scurry and Trials Driving Challenge where ponies of all shapes and sizes navigated a timed assault course, needing speed, agility and bravery to succeed, both proving to be a hit with all those that watched on. The rest of the show was equally as captivating. Talented local people had packed the marquees with wonderful exhibits of art and photography, tapestry, knitting, cakes, floral art, vegetables and home-made wine and honey. Local school St. Mary’s R C Primary School took home the cup in the Children’s Section, which was full of vibrant colourful exhibits, proving how important art is in our local schools and how the exhibitors are an essential part of what Great Eccleston Show is all about. The Tractor Pulling was as always a great attraction to many visitors. The noise and size of these tractors is incredible and the large crowds of people watching this year were enthralled by the competition. Local lad, Dan Whittingham, won the 2.5 tonne class. Great Eccleston Show has lived up to its reputation as the best two day show in the North-West, yet again. It is a show to attract all age groups and interests and we will all look forward to another thrilling show in 2019. Lynn Peat 07585 115 258

BEN WALLACE MP I do hope you are enjoying the summer weather. At the time of writing this article the sun is splitting the sky here in Lancashire. Long may it continue, although hot weather does bring its own risks, so please be careful, if you need advice please go to: www.nhs.uk/live-well/ healthy-body/heatwave-how-to-cope-inhot-weather I have recently met with the Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at Lancashire County Council, County Councillor Keith Iddon. He gave me an update about highways maintenance across the constituency and I am encouraged that many long term issues are being addressed. I have no doubt however that there will remain areas of concern. Please inform your County Councillor if you do have outstanding issues, as I am sure they will be keen to address your concerns. During the meeting, the on-going issue of bus provision in Over Wyre was discussed and Lancashire County Council continue to talk to Blackpool Transport regarding this.

IRON 4U
I have recently had the honour of attending John Cross CE Primary School to celebrate their 300th year. I was given a very interesting tour of the school, which has an amazing history. I was fascinated by the fact that in 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie and his army would have marched past the school gates on their way to unsuccessfully attempting to capture London. I would like to thank all involved with the day including staff and pupils who dressed up in period costume. I have said many times how much I enjoy visiting local schools and talking to children about my role as their Member of Parliament.

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) I believe it is extremely important to engage young people in the democratic process. I was, therefore, delighted to be invited recently to Garstang St Thomas’s CE Primary School for a Local Schools conference. This was an opportunity for local School Councils to meet. All schools involved gave excellent presentations about their School Councils and how their work has benefitted school life. I then spoke to the children and took questions. I would like to thank Head Teacher, Mr Blakely, for facilitating this and to all who took part. The NHS continues to be a subject that constituents write to me about often and it is an issue which is close to my own heart. I remain in close contact with all Hospital Trusts and Clinical Commissioning Groups serving our constituency. Most recently I met with the Chief Executive of Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and clinicians to discuss developments at the Trust and how I can support them as a local Member of Parliament. Later this week I am meeting with Dr. Tony Naughton, Clinical Chief Officer at Fylde and Wyre Clinical Commissioning Group. I will be discussing with him the Commissioning Group’s out-of-hours provision and the impact of those arrangements on Over Wyre residents. I will also be raising with him the Commissioning Group’s policy on the prescribing of the Freestyle Libre Device which helps diabetes patients manage their condition. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has approved this device for prescription on the NHS but it is not currently available in our area.

CALLING OVER WYRE GROUPS
I continue to meet residents at my advice surgeries to discuss a wide range of issues.
Could you use a subsidised minibus on a regular basis?
Please remember if you would like to attend one of my surgeries, the most effective way to contact me is by email, with a brief description of the issues you wish to raise and your contact details.
We are Hambleton Over 60’s Friendship Club and until recently our members have enjoyed twice monthly trips out at a very reasonable price, courtesy of a local minibus company which has now sadly closed.
It is worth bearing in mind that I can often offer assistance without the need for a meeting. National issues are filling my mailbag at the moment. Please remember I am here to represent you and your views are important to me so please keep them coming.
We have been searching for ways to get back the trips that have added so much quality to our members’ lives and in the process we have met with our local Parish and Wyre Borough Councillors who have been very supportive.
If I can be of any assistance to you please ring my Office at the House of Commons on 0207 219 5804 or my Constituency Office on (01995) 672977, email me at wallaceb@ parliament.uk or write to me at The House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA.
Wyre Council Chief Executive Gary Payne has promised that he will do his best to look into finding suitable funding and resources for us if we can prove there is enough regular need in the Over Wyre area for a council supported minibus.

GARSTANG RECORDED MUSIC SOC
JOHN PARKINSON
Guest presenter, Chris Rodwell gave the July meeting of Garstang Recorded Music Society an excellent programme under the title ‘Musical Dedications’.
Los Angeles’ Mysterious Architect
Each work’s dedication had a story that added to the interest and enjoyment of the music. The dedicatees included, among many others, the abdicated Queen Christina of Sweden, Haydn, Constanze Mozart, Verdi’s father-in-law and Martin Luther King.
John Parkinson was the man that designed the new-era Los Angeles as we know it today. Featured in Hollywood movies and iconic moments in history, his buildings are still standing tall.
On Mon 6th Aug we will have an evening of Members’ Choices. As always, visitors are most welcome, admission £2. We meet in Garstang Arts Centre from 7:30pm to 9:30pm. Inquiries to David Greenwood (01995) 602875 or myself or find us at www. garstangartssociety.org.uk under ‘Activity Groups’. Or just come along! Gordon Semple (01995) 602337
Wyre Council is looking for information on Los Angeles’ most iconic architect, John Parkinson, originally from Scorton in Wyre.
Although born in Scorton, very little is known about the architect’s life in England before he moved to America, except that he was the son of a millworker and began his career working as a builder’s apprentice, taking night classes at the Bolton Mechanics Institute. He then moved to Winnipeg, Canada, for a fresh start and found a humble job of building fences. He returned briefly to England but was soon back in Napa, California, where he worked as a sawmill foreman and built his own home.

JOHN PARKINSON (cont) Impressed by the work, his landlord put him in touch with a local bank who were looking for someone to design an addition to their building. Parkinson won the commission and was confident enough to call himself an architect from that moment on. Stephen Gee, author of ‘Iconic Vision: John Parkinson, Architect of Los Angeles’, commented: ‘John Parkinson helped define Los Angeles as a city that embraced the future. The iconic buildings he designed are known around the world’. Parkinson’s legacy includes the city’s first skyscraper, the first luxury hotel, the Homer Laughlin Building (now home to the Grand Central Market), high-end department store Bullocks Wilshire, the Memorial Coliseum, which hosted the 1932 and 1984 Olympics, and Los Angeles’ City Hall.

SOROPTIMISTS Women Inspiring Action, Transforming Lives We couldn’t have asked for better weather for our dog show in July. It was an early start to get the ring set up and the marquees in place but the well-drilled Soroptimist ladies (plus a few husbands and friends) were at Kirkham & Catterall Memorial Hall getting ready for the big day. Inside, the kitchen team were preparing a selection of delicious sandwiches and homemade cakes to be sold to the hungry masses. And then it was time to open the gates and start booking in our many dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds. This is always a fun event, allowing people to come along and show off their best friends
to everyone and hope they walk away with a prize. We’re very lucky to have a competition judge in our club, so we do take it seriously but let’s not forget, there’s always room for pre-loved pooches and those of dubious origins at our event! We held classes for both the serious ‘pedigree’ categories and also for fun – who can resist ‘The Waggiest Tail’? Whatever the dog’s origins and pedigree, there were lots of happy people, both young and old, who

SOROPTIMISTS (cont) were thrilled that their dog walked away with a rosette and prize. The monies raised by the event are going to two very worthy causes: our Soroptimist Federation four year project – the Meru Garden Project - and more locally, to Animal Care at Lancaster. There are so many people we need to thank, so to all the businesses who sponsored the event and to the people who came out on such a blistering day, thank you all. End of Term Appeal – Calling All Children! Have you finished with your old school backpack? GARSTANG RUNNING CLUB (cont) Garstang Half Marathon Sun 2nd Sept
runners entered their first race at the Forton 5k Supper Run.
Garstang Running Club members are preparing for their annual half marathon which takes place on Sun 2nd Sept.
This followed the latest ‘Couch to 5k’ sessions organised and led by Jonathan Hewitt. Six of the group ran the race so they are no longer ‘couchers’ but 5k-ers! They expected to come last in the race but they were well ahead! Well done to them and we hope they continue to run.
It will start outside The Royal Oak at 10:30am and follows an undulating route taking in parts of Catterall, Claughton, Barnacre, Scorton and Cabus before heading back into Garstang. The 13 miles covered do include some flat bits and only one serious (but short!) hill - however we don’t claim it to be a flat PB course! It does however go through some of our lovely local countryside and the marshals are always cheerful – even if it rains! It is quite a popular race and we hope for a good entry – around 200 last year. Race Headquarters is at the clubhouse by the football pitch at Garstang Sports Club where refreshment will be served from about 9:00am.
There will be further groups next year but if anyone can already run/walk 5k Jonathan is happy to lead a group on a short run when the club meets on Tuesday evenings. As usual members meet in the Sports & Social carpark to leave at 7:00pm. All welcome! If you would like more information about our races or the club please visit the website www.garstangrc.co.uk or contact me. Frank Miller 09956 040 403
The cost of entry is £14 for attached runners and £16 if not in a registered running club. Entry can be made on line through the club website but runners can enter on the day for an extra £2. All finishers will receive a bespoke medal featuring the Market Cross and a goody bag. There will be cash prizes for the first three male/female runners and the first in each male vet category from V40 to V75(+) and female vet category from FV35 to FV70(+). This is the second of our annual races, the final one being the Myerscough 10mile on Sun 2nd Dec at Myerscough College. The club is enjoying a successful year with some members getting into the first three places or first in their vet category. Of course racing is a minor activity for most members who either never race or do so only occasionally. However recently a few newish

CANVASSERS NEEDED IN WYRE
ST JOHN’S HOSPICE
Wyre Council is looking for people who would like to earn money carrying out a door-todoor canvass of local households.
Charity Ball
Canvassers will be working for the Council’s Electoral Registration Office and they are needed to help with the compilation of the annual Register of Electors. The role involves calling on those households who do not return their household enquiry forms. This is a vital part of the democratic process because people who are not on the register cannot vote. The amount of payment depends on the area canvassed and full training will be given. Anyone interested should contact Andrea Mullin (01253) 887257, email andrea. mullin@wyre.gov.uk or visit Wyre Civic Centre, Breck Road, Poulton-le-Fylde, FY6 7PU. Emily Wareing (01253) 887587
Our Charity Ball has long been a part of the core fundraising strategy for St John’s Hospice. Having delivered successful (and fun!) evenings to the Lancaster and Kendal communities, it is with great pleasure that this year, we are bringing the event to the people of Garstang. The first Ball was organised back in 2011, and we have done two events every year since then, one in the Lancaster areas and one in Kendal. Our last ball was in May, at the Globe Arena and was Great Gatsby themed. Ladies came dressed in glamorous evening dresses with the occasional 1920’s twist – the gentleman in the timeless tuxedoes. Every ball is different, from theme to venue but there are a few staples that will stay the same… On Sat 10th Nov guests will be welcomed to the Garstang Country House and Hotel with a complementary welcome drink, kindly sponsored by a local business. They will enter into a grand room beautifully decorated by a Garstang florist or events company. Lush bouquets and centrepieces will adorn the tables and wintry themed place settings will guide our guests to their seats. Sitting proudly at the end of the room, a table heaped in wonderful prizes - very generously donated by local shops, cafes and experience providers - will eagerly await their lucky new owner after the raffle... a kick start to the Christmas shopping perhaps? Or a little something to warm oneself after the brisk November days. The guests will sit down to a lavish three course meal, whilst the wonderful Lomax Brothers gently croon and softly tinkle the ivories as guests eat, drink and – hopefully –

ST JOHN’S HOSPICE (cont) get a little merry. Between the courses, the guests will visit the silent auction tables, where posters brag of the spoils. These are the prizes that you won’t find in any normal raffle, a spa day or a print from a local artist perhaps? Then again, this isn’t any normal ball! Before the final course – an amazing cake made of the finest local cheeses – the guests will browse the programmes for the details of our main auction prizes as well as enter in the star prize draw, for the chance to win an extra special prize. In the past these have been stays in luxury cottages, beautiful pieces of jewellery or great pieces of sporting memorabilia. After this, the band fire up again and the dancing can begin! Whilst the guests are dancing the winter night away, the St John’s Hospice staff quickly count all the money raised on the night, ready to present the guests with a total and a sincere thank you before carriages.
The coffee morning at the United Reform Church Hall on Thurs 5th July also did well, raising a total of £282.10. Again, thanks to all the volunteers and the generous donors of items for the stalls. This could not have happened without the support of the URC and parishioners. Grateful thanks to everyone involved in raising funds for such a worthwhile cause. Gillian Benn (01995) 602246

ST MARK’S CHURCH (cont) previous church which had become unstable. Many folks may have visited for weddings or baptisms. It is a beautiful spot and makes for a perfect setting for photographs. It celebrates 120 years in 2019. Building up to this celebration, we are planning a number of special events. There will be leaflets detailing our forthcoming programme available when you visit our lovely place of worship. The first of these events is a ‘Celebration of Austin and Paley’ at St Mark’s Church on the last weekend in September. Austin and Paley, Architects, were the foremost designers/architects of buildings in and around Lancaster. Their legacy, apart from St Mark’s, includes The RLI hospital, Ravenglass Station, Morecambe Promenade Station, Royal Albert Infirmary, Lancaster Priory, Militia Barracks,
Town Hall, The Gregson, Ryelands House extensions and many more in Cheshire, Cumbria and all around Lancashire. The variety of buildings included hotels, hospitals, halls and many churches which remain for us today as solid and beautiful reminders of the Victorian era. We hope to emphasise some of this great legacy at St Mark’s over that weekend. We will be having talks given by experts and there will be clear displays showing their work and lives. Come and see us and meet some of our friendly villagers and visiting experts if you can. We will do our very best to make you feel welcome. Further details will be given in the September issue of Focus. Ruth Chapman

CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG (CRY) Annual Twilight Treasure Hunt Sat 11th Aug. Meet at Garstang Medical Centre, PR3 1PB. Registration for this very popular annual event for all ages takes place between 4:30pm and 5:30pm. Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund Late June saw Sarah and I invited to Garstang Golf and Country House hotel where we were presented with a cheque for a terrific £750 from Garstang Inner Wheel. This was the culmination of their year of fundraising towards local CRY screenings. The kindness of the community does not end there. Mark and Marion at Best Wishes ran a lovely ‘Guess the Name of the Bear’ game, raising £50. The cute bear’s name turned out to be Posh and it was won by Janet Grundy. With the long hot days of summer well and truly here the weather for the first of Mr John Waite’s strolls around the fascinating industrial heritage sites we have in Catterall could not have been better. It was glorious for the convivial summer concerts kindly hosted by Choir 1 too.
You will need one vehicle and driver and at least one passenger to solve the clues and answer the questions, but the more the merrier! £5 per person, which includes light refreshments at Cobble Hey Gardens, Claughton, at the end of the hunt. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to get there, the clues will lead you to it! For further information about the Treasure Hunt contact Sarah 07941 985 364, Paula 07785 106 976 Facebook ‘The Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund –CRY’ or Email paulahez.ph@gmail.com Paula Hesmondhalgh
These evenings were a fabulous show case both of their talents, and those of their guests Marion and Ivan Gaughan, and Louise Coupe. The events helped to spread the word about the work of Matt’s Fund at CRY and raised a wonderful £950. On behalf of the families that can have their young people tested through the kindness and unstinting generosity of the folks mentioned above and those who helped and supported them, thank you. Whilst we may have sold out of scarecrows at our market stall, which saw £359.70 added to the fund, the Garstang Scarecrow & ‘Owd Nell’s Cider festivals are still to come, so here’s hoping the weather will be good for them too.

PPG meetings are held at the Practice, in the evenings, after work. We promote a welcoming, warm and friendly atmosphere. We do though have some ground rules - Terms of Reference, Confidentiality agreements and Membership role descriptions. One thing our PPG is not for is a venue for complaints, grievances or grumbles. We do not allow abuse of NHS staff or PPG group members. If you don’t abide by the rules you will have your membership terminated. In meetings, PPG members and Practice staff openly debate and agree arranging local social events, helping to support illness’s such as Dementia, Mental Health, and Cancer. We also assist by visiting elderly and vulnerable groups in our community, by arranging for them to attend functions. Many elderly patients live outside Garstang in isolated rural communities, with no access to transport.

GARSTANG MEDICAL (cont) As PPG’s, we plan and organise discussion groups, and welcome guest speakers. Speakers range from a Practice GP talking about his or her specialist area of medicine, or a Nurse Practitioner attends to explain how their new role is developing in assisting the diagnosis of minor ailments, which do not necessarily need to take a valuable Practice GP appointment. They also talk about their roles in helping deliver health care. Pharmacy Managers give talks too. Occasionally we may get a Consultant to speak to our group. We aim to arrange social events to provide that extra special contact for elderly or frail people who may be alone and isolated. We can, and do arrange sing-along meetings to help with Dementia patients. This can assist with reminiscing and afford someone to have that special memory flash come back,
even if only for an hour. It brings light and hope to these people, and also to their carers who usually, are a family member - a husband looking after their wife or vice-versa. Carers are especially in need of support. Having a loved one not know who you are can be exceptionally hard and difficult to cope with. We can, and do, have an impact on how our Practice delivers care within our neighbourhood. At this important time in the history of the NHS, it’s 70th year, medical service delivery is changing. It has to change. The HS cannot operate as it did. Public engagement and PPG’s can help bring about that change. In addition to being the Chairman of our PPG, I also attend Fylde and Wyre CCG Board meetings as a public participant.

RSPCA The F & W CCG Board actively welcomes, encourages and supports members of the public being involved in how they discharge their business and health care services. I also sit on the Fylde and Wyre CCG Influence Panel. This forum, overseen by a formal NHS staff member is chaired by a member of the public, rotating on a yearly basis. We discuss, debate and review changes the CCG may wish to develop. This could be developing new policy, decisions on how to introduce changes, or developing and promoting new health services. The aforementioned are openly debated and, as the public, we make our recommendations on how managing and introducing a change should be implemented within F & W CCG. And yes, we do sometimes give the CCG a hard time, and yes, our changes are taken
seriously and are acted upon. Recommendations made, in turn are submitted to the CCG board members for internal discussion prior to being ratified at F & W CCG Board Meetings. Once implemented they are mandated across all the CCG departments agencies and healthcare providers. The NHS is your NHS. Yes, there are problems, but it’s the successes that always outweigh these problems, and in a crisis, it, and more importantly it’s staff, always deliver without exception. So, if you want to help develop and be a part of your healthcare services please do consider joining us; we really would appreciate your help and support and are keen to recruit more members. You can help inform the way health services are developed and delivered, you have a voice, and I encourage you to use it. After all, you have nothing to loose, who knows, you may make new friends. Your contribution will make a difference. RSPCA (cont) Lewis Lewis is a black cat who is a loveable boy that needs owners who will give him time and extra support whilst he settles in. On arrival he was very shy and nervous but with time and some confidence building he has really come round and is a different boy. He can be extremely loving, super affectionate and will happily seek attention. He would like nothing more than a warm comfy knee to sit on. He would be best suited to a quieter home with secondary school children and may be able to live with another cat. Rocco
confidence so he needs an owner who is willing to invest time into socialising and bonding with him whilst building his confidence. He is possibly ok to live with a neutered female rabbit but would need to be introduced slowly at first. For more information or to arrange a meeting with one of the animals mentioned above, please contact the centre in Stalmine. Events Summer Open Day Our Summer Open Day is happening on Sun 5th Aug between 11:00am - 4:00pm. We will have a wide variety of stalls including pet products, tombola, raffle and crafts. There will also be an afternoon tea available including;
Rocco is a loving boy who arrived at the centre due to concerns for his welfare. He had untreated skin problems but is responding very well to medicated baths. He is an energetic boy who is always on the go therefore would benefit from living in an active home. He is very well mannered, nosey on walks and loves the company of other dogs. We feel he may be suited to a multi dog household with a careful introduction. Rocco has a sweet nature but would be better suited to a home with older children (12+) as he can be bouncy and excitable. Fudge Fudge is a shy, nervous rabbit who lacks

MISSING Floyd is a three year old cockatiel who went missing from Garstang on Tues 15th May. He can be a bit feisty as he is quite nervous, but when he is relaxed, he loves tickles, and whistles ‘If You’re Happy and You Know It’ and the ‘Star Wars’ theme! He is like a slim small grey parrot, with a yellow face and crest and orange cheek patches. He has some white patches on his wings. He also has a leg ring. Floyd may respond to the sound of cockatiel noises e.g. on Youtube, and loves millet seed. We are offering a reward of £300 for his safe return. Possibly he could be some distance away by now. We would be very grateful for any sightings. If you have any information that could help us get him back could you please contact us. Mike & Helen Spencer 07948 727 013
