TROUBLE WITH THE TURKS ‘Brits in the East 1914-1918’ Garstang Library Fri 14th Sept 5:00pm As the Centenary of the Great War draws to a close, we may pause to reflect upon the great events that finally brought peace to Europe in November 1918. However, in doing so, we often overlook the dramatic contribution made by our Servicemen and Women who fought another war against a very different enemy and far away from our European shores. In this illustrated, one hour mini-lecture, local historian Paul G. Smith, author of ‘Garstang’s Great War Heroes’, will tell the story of Germany’s other ally in the First World War - Turkey - and the difficult naval and military campaigns that were directed at the Ottoman Empire between the years 1914 and 1918. British Tommies and their Dominion brothersin-arms from Australia and New Zealand were transported by ship from Britain and India by way of the Suez Canal, to take part in several troublesome campaigns: on the Gallipoli Peninsula, into Turkish Palestine and Syria... and still further East into the parched arid deserts of Mesopotamia. And they proved a desperate strain on British resources. As battle raged, our troops encountered a fearsome enemy, known to the men as ‘Johnny Turk’, many strict Muslims, whose celebrated battle cry of ‘Allah! Allah!’ became the torment of the Tommies. The climate was enough of a problem in itself - temperatures of 40 - 45 degrees Celsius in the shade were already causing sickness, malaria and heat-exhaustion among the ranks. For much of the conflict, our war with the Ottoman Empire was difficult, badly planned and downright criminal. The men were badly supported and given scant attention by their

The result was a terrible death-toll and horrific tales of non-existent medical supplies, lack of artillery, broken logistics and shortages of everything from essential water tanks and river craft. Steeped in controversy, writers and historians are still arguing now whether Britain’s ‘side-show’ in the East was really worth the cost. The lecture is in two parts, separated by a light refreshment break of coffee, tea and cakes. Tickets will be available, £5, at Garstang Library. Mr Smith’s final Great War lecture is to be given on Sun 11th Nov at the new St. Thomas’s Parish Hall. More details on this will be given in Focus and the local press in October. Paul Smith

DO NOT GIVE US OUR DAILY BREAD Here’s the bad news: Sorry folks but the game is up for eating bread. ALL bread, never mind the ‘I only eat wholemeal’ nonsense. Here’s the good news: You can freely eat butter, cream, grass fed meats, cheese, vegetables galore smothered in melted butter and seasoned to perfection! Yum. I touched upon dairy and fat last month so I will not go into much detail except to say that cholesterol protects you from dementia and Alzheimers disease – that’s enough to make you choke up and throw away those awful statins I hope! Back to the bad news – bread and cereals, pastas, biscuits and cakes etc quite simply cause your brain to become inflamed. Yes, your brain is on fire! And basing your diet on these foods as your staple diet causes rises in blood sugar which
actually make your brain shrink and contribute to neurological diseases and diabetes. Within this bad news there is hope – many people live in fear of developing Alzheimers or dementia – but we now know that turning your back on this food and increasing your intake of good fats and proteins will mean you are massively loading the dice in your favour. Nevermind the idea of looking for a cure for these diseases – your behaviour will mean you will not need a cure because you are ensuring it will not develop in the first place. And if you do not believe me get hold of a wonderful book called ‘Grain Brain’ by Dr David Perlmutter that concisely explains all the evidence to show we need to turn our back on all these cereals and grains. A tiny amount of grain is no big deal but I’m afraid the modern westerner eats it for breakfast, lunch and with their evening meal in some form or another and it is this that is causing devastating effects on your body and nervous system and brain. It is also worth noting that if you have depression, ADHD, OCD or any number of other mental health issues there is also very good evidence to show that removing gluten from your diet can make a profound difference. Even if you have been shown to be able to tolerate gluten it seems it doesn’t do much good for any of us. You can also begin to help the problems associated with these disorders by eating fermented foods every day such as kefir and sauer kraut. Take a regular probiotic such as pro-cognitiv by Nature’s Aid (it has specific good bacteria and vitamins that aid mental health) and ensuring you have a regular intake of cannabinoids from high quality full spectrum plant extract CBD products. GARSTANG IN BLOOM Editorial deadlines meant I was unable to comment on our July competitions in the August issue so, somewhat belatedly, I’ll do so now. After a glorious summer of almost perpetual sunshine and a drought, always a challenge for gardeners, it was rather frustrating that the rain fell on our judging day Fri 20th July! However this didn’t dampen our enthusiasm and, despite having to show the judges round under umbrellas, we were very pleased with how the town looked. We received lots of positive comments and were praised for our hard work in the most difficult of summers. The addition of the cheerful if not rather soggy scarecrows helped us on our route too! At the end of a tiring week, the team met afterwards in The Royal Oak for a celebratory round of drinks where we all agreed that the rain had actually freshened up the beds and

borders. We felt that the judges had left seeing Garstang at its best, despite the weather. We don’t get the results of the North West in Bloom competition until early November, a long time to wait! The competition for Garstang’s businesses was judged earlier in the same week. Here we must give a big thank you to all who took part and to all the businesses that decorated their premises with flowers even if you didn’t get around to entering! It really makes a difference to the town and the impression that the judges get. The results of our Business Competition will be announced this month in an evening at The Royal Oak, hosted by the Chamber of Trade. After all our hard work, we had a day out together the following week at Gresgarth Hall, the home of internationally renowned garden designer, Lady Arabella Lennox-Boyd. We had a lovely time viewing her fabulous and varied garden. As well as the formal garden around the terraces and herbaceous borders, we visited the arboretum, wild garden, bog garden and kitchen garden. We’re very lucky to have such an inspirational and creative garden right on our doorstep at Caton. Another piece of luck was that gardener and TV presenter Carol Klein was visiting the garden the very same day, filming a programme about Gresgarth for Channel 5. Both she and Lady Arabella took some time out to say hello and have their photos taken with us, a lovely end to the day! Our weekly gardening and tidying sessions still continue - every Wednesday at 7:00pm until it becomes too dark to do so. Even then, we have some daytime meetings instead! Flowers still need deadheading, shrubs need pruning and borders need putting to bed for the winter. Join us, please, if you can spare some time. You’ll enjoy it. Look out for us at work in the high-vis vests! Gill Bergman

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES
Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?
Dr Finlay Sutton
If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.
Brenda’s Testimonial
Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

GARSTANG SPORTS CLUB Building Appeal Garstang Sports Club has played an intrinsic part in the social life and fabric of Garstang and the surrounding areas for many years and generations of members and players have passed through its doors in that time. The combined playing membership of the six affiliated clubs, Cricket, Football, Tennis, Rugby, Canoe and Running is currently 600 with almost 200 of these being Junior members. The club is proud that it caters for the sporting needs for of all people - from the ages of 4 to 70 across the various sporting activities.
catering arrangements as well as hosting fundraising events and individual club events such as Presentation Evenings and corporate entertainment events for sponsors - a vital activity in this day and age. With new legislation regarding the size and layout of both changing rooms and shower areas (introduced by both the Rugby Football Union and the English Cricket Board) the current arrangements for both Rugby and Cricket at the clubhouse no longer conform to the required standards.
The Sports Club has now become a victim of its own success. The current clubhouse can no longer function properly with the existing number of players and supporters.
Also Garstang and the immediate area is undergoing expansion as new and pending housing projects take shape in the coming years. There will be new blood coming to live in the area, many of whom will want to take part in sporting activity or watch their local sports teams.
Difficulties include post-match activities and

GARSTANG SPORTS CLUB (cont) accommodate these people and their families, therefore the club has to increase its capacity - as we look to build a club fit for purpose and be financially secure for the next 50 years. Following discussions and consultations with the various affiliated clubs expansion and improvement plans for the clubhouse have been drawn up and a planning application has been submitted to Wyre Borough Council in February 2018. This can be viewed on the Council’s website – Ref No 18/00181/FUL. These proposals will resolve all the problems currently being encountered at Garstang Sports Club but at a cost in the region of £350,000 to complete. We will be applying for Grant Aid to Sport England via the National Lottery as well as the FA, RFU and ECB Bodies for financial assistance.
Fundraising Appeal The Clubs operating under the umbrella of Garstang Sports Club cover their day to day operating costs by way of player subscriptions and existing Sponsors who very kindly donate varying sums of money to the individual Clubs depending on the type of Sponsorship deal in place. Many of the Clubs have in the past raised many, many thousands of pounds themselves to pay for the existing improvements that have taken place over the years. The Clubs also organize events at different times of the year to attract extra income to assist in their costs of playing/coaching. These costs are ever increasing and they themselves run into thousands of pounds. The separate Club Committees are at full stretch managing these costs and raising

GARSTANG SPORTS CLUB (cont) funds through sponsorship deals. Without such deals it is very likely that the Clubs would fail and certain team sports would be lost to Garstang. This building project is for the benefit of sport for the future for all our children in Garstang and the surrounding locality and we are now turning to the general public for financial support for this project. Any donation, either small or large, will help our cause and assist in applying for Grant Aid, as one of the questions asked is always ‘How much have you raised locally?’ This forms an important part of the decision making process by these National Bodies in terms of who merits Grant Aid. Charlie Collinson is willing to discuss large donations from any Individual or company in person as there is the opportunity to have any of the rooms in the project named/dedicated
to someone for life. If everyone helps with a donation of any amount we can get the project going. If you wish to make a donation you can do so by contributing to the Garstang Sports Club Building Account (NatWest) Sort Code: 01-03-33 and A/c No: 28687310. Both are at Garstang Library, starting at 7:30pm. On Thurs 13th Sept it’s the turn of Glyn Shipman, with modern folk tales of love, loss, death and disillusionment, monkeys, muons and Match.com.
These are finely crafted songs about the weird and wonderful - and the not so weird and far from wonderful. Songs inspired by monkeys, millinery and politics, fizzy pop and particle physics. Glyn has opened for many bands and has been featured on Radio Lancashire and on Saturday Live on Radio 4. He’s a singular talent with word and rhyme. Tickets are £8 from the Library or on the door. And Thurs 1st Nov it’s ‘Far More Grace Than Me’ a presentation in words and music about a local family from 1910 to 1920. It’s written by local playwright Michael Neary and is a fitting tribute to the resilience of our ancestors, on the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice in 1918. This one is £10 from the Library or on the door. Don Moore

COMPUTER ADVICE If you have ever bought anything from Currys/ PC World or Dixons/Carphone Warehouse and given them your email address etc then you have probably received an email recently about a security breach in 2017 which resulted in potentially 10 million customer records being accessed by some bad guys. This is not the first company to have admitted to having such a problem, and I doubt it will be the last. The most important message in the email is that no payment card or bank account details were taken, which is good news. However, there was plenty of other information lost (name, address, phone number, date of birth and email address) so this leaves all of us affected at risk of attention from scammers eager to take advantage of the problems. What can you do? I can only repeat the advice from Dixons Carphone (the owners of Currys etc) to be careful. You may well

receive phone calls pretending to be from a company who sound convincing because they know a lot about you – but always be very wary when anyone rings you out of the blue. Wherever possible, end the call and then wait a little while before ringing the company back on a number NOT given by the caller eg. from an existing bill or the company website etc. You should never reveal any full passwords, login details or account numbers to anybody who calls you unless you are absolutely sure that they are genuine. There is also likely to be an increase in fake emails and text messages. If you receive any emails from any organisation, asking you to provide information or login to your account to do something – NEVER use a link in the email to get to your account. Instead, access your account by opening

COMPUTER ADVICE (cont) your web browser and using any shortcut/ favourite / bookmark etc or whatever you would normally do to get to the account if you hadn’t received the email. And if you are still unsure, don’t hesitate to ring the organisation to check (using a telephone number found on your own paperwork or the official website, not one in the email). Even though no bank details were stolen (according to the email), it’s still also sensible to keep a close eye on your accounts to make sure there is no suspicious activity. If you do think you have been a victim of fraud you should report it to Action Fraud, the UK’s national fraud and internet crime reporting centre, on 03001 232 040.

GARSTANG WINE CIRCLE In an addition to our regular programme, the Circle decided to hold a Champagne tasting event on Sat 11th Aug. The term ‘Champagne’ was a bit of a euphemism, as it was intended to allow members of the Circle to compare a range of sparkling wines. The seven wines included four champagnes priced from two at budget level and two more moderately expensive varieties. Sadly the Circle’s budget did not run to varieties costing hundreds of pounds a bottle, favoured by Yuppies working in the share and commodity markets of the eighties in the City of London! The question being posed to those attending was whether the cost of buying Champagne is justified, given the range of other sparkling wines on the market, particularly if someone was buying a sparkling wine to celebrate a wedding, or other important celebration. The wines were accompanied by an excellent
three course menu prepared and served by Anne Whitehead, Jackie Hastings and Glynis Jeffries. We started the evening with a Prosecco, a light and pleasant fizz from Booths, which accompanied presentations about Champagne’s history, and the wines that are produced in the defined area of France that is Champagne by Alan Jeffries and Guy Pugh. Our starter was very local, with potted Morecambe Bay Shrimps accompanied by a Cremant de Jura from Aldi, a wine which has proved popular with Circle members. Cremant style wines are produced in various regions of France and are another alternative to Champagne. The main course of salmon was served with Aldi’s Champagne and the dessert of Strawberry Treats was served with a sparkling wine from Tasmania, demonstrating that

GARSTANG WINE CIRCLE (cont) antipodean producers are in the market to sell sparkling wines and what they produce is of an excellent standard. A Co-op champagne accompanied nibbles to clear palates, before the main event and the serving of the two examples of more expensive Champagne to finish the evening. I don’t recall a definitive answer to the question posed, as people clearly had come up with different answers. Perhaps the cumulative effects of the sparkling wines themselves reduced the chances of any kind of rational answer emerginging! We all had an excellent evening with some wonderful wines and excellent food and much praise and thanks must be extended to all those involved in organising and presenting the evening. The next meeting of the Circle will be on
Mon 24th Sept at 7:30pm in the Arts Centre. This is the start of the 2018-19 programme and a good time for prospective new members to join. The brief formalities of the AGM will be followed by a presentation of a selection of wines from the forthcoming wine circle holiday in the Rhone Valley. Details of the meeting and of membership of the circle can be obtained from Alan Jeffries (01995) 601842. Mervyn Stokes

BEN WALLACE MP I do hope you have had a good summer and have been able to take advantage of the sun. I was pleased to see that the hosepipe ban was not put in place after all. The Parliamentary Recess gives me the opportunity to travel around the constituency and this is when I really discover the issues affecting constituents. Virgin Trains have now confirmed to me that the reason they have not increased the number of direct Poulton to London trains is because the platform is not long enough for their 9 and 11 car Pendolino trains to stop. I am told the trains cannot use selective door opening technology as the station and some of the trains are not fitted with the equipment required. I am incensed at this as the platform length has only recently been reduced – clearly a short-sighted and ill-researched decision which disadvantages my constituents. I am making robust representations to Network Rail seeking the reinstatement of the platform. The rail services in general from Poulton to Preston and beyond are running better now after the works and I will be keeping a close eye on this. I know many of you were badly affected by the change in timetables and works in general. I have been highlighting this to Network Rail and I will be continuing to talk to all rail operators about services in the future. Northern has announced details of the additional compensation which will be offered to season ticket holders. Passengers who commute on certain routes will be able to claim compensation up to the equivalent of a month’s travel, which is over and above the

I welcome the Government’s recent decision to extend the Blue Badge Scheme to those with hidden disabilities. I know this will make life that little bit easier for those with autism and mental health conditions and their families and/or carers. Please see link below for more information. www.gov.uk/government/news/peoplewith-hidden-disabilities-to-benefit-fromblue-badges Slow broadband speeds especially in rural areas has been a concern to many. I have been dealing with many cases and I am increasingly loosing patience with BT on the roll out of Broadband in these areas. Rural businesses rely on the internet to enable them to grow and prosper. With this in mind, I am asking Lancashire County Council to step in and help in areas that BT consider are commercially unviable and I have written to the Minister to ask that any subsidy support in the future should be aimed at community led projects that are delivering better speeds and fibre direct to people’s doors. I have recently written to the Environment Agency and Natural England about concerns in relation to Halite’s plans to excavate the salt caverns using high pressure water and to then release the brine water produced into Morecambe Bay.

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) I reminded them that throughout the planning process I raised concerns about the damage this brine would have on the delicate ecosystem and that recently I have been contacted by constituents who have expressed similar concerns. The Environment Agency has acknowledged the growing unease around the project and have sought to assure me that appropriate measures have been put in place and will continue to be taken to ensure that there is minimum impact on the marine environment. This will be an on-going issue and I aim to ensure that the work of Halite is monitored robustly. I continue to meet residents at my advice surgeries covering a wide range of issues. CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG (cont) and Dolphinholme for the Twilight Treasure Hunt we’ve certainly been out and about raising awareness and funds for CRY. Towers & Gornall too have very kindly promoted and supported CRY on their stands at both Gt Eccleston and Garstang shows and countless folks have donated, supported and given their valuable time (many anonymously), to try to protect the cardiac health of young people. We have been absolutely bowled over by the generosity the fund has been shown and cannot find the words to thank you all enough, but it truly is very much appreciated. Every week in the UK twelve apparently fit and healthy young people die suddenly from an undiagnosed heart condition. As with our beloved and much missed son Matthew, in 80% of instances there will have been no signs or symptoms and although
screening will not identify all those at risk (no screening is fool proof), in Italy where screening is mandatory for all young people engaged in organised sport, the incidence of young sudden cardiac death has been reduced by 89%. This is why we feel offering these ECG tests is so vitally important. We have two events in September: On Sun 16th Sept you’ll find us at the Kepple Lane Fun Day, with a children’s tombola, pick a daisy game and a lost Koala! Sat 22nd Sept will be our final market stall of the year, just outside Garstang’s Market Hall from 9:00am – 3:00pm, with lots of fabulous bargains to be had. SOROPTIMISTS (cont) this hellish war, to find relative safety in other parts of the country. John is lucky because he attends school. Fewer than one in three primary-age children do so, making it the country with the highest percentage of children in the world who are out of school. And yet we know that only in the classroom can peace be born and hope of a better future survive. Hunger is perhaps the greatest reason why so many children are being robbed of an education. John can go to school because, like 20,000 other children in the Lakes State, he eats Mary’s Meals each day. A plate of rice and beans – that’s what hope looks like for these children. And the faithful serving of that food is a remarkable feat, amid the terror and chaos. The men and women who oversee the food deliveries are heroic, walking up to 10km to some schools when the rainy season is closing roads, to ensure that children are fed – and while doing so, they risk their lives. John says that when he grows up he wants to be a doctor so he can help others with disabilities. And so, for now, hope remains that he and his friends might know peace and the fulfilment of dreams.” Back to Work

your rights.
Having spoken to residents of the numerous holiday parks and residential park homes we have in our constituency I’ve become increasingly concerned about the confusion over ownership and
As a result I’ve written to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government and Wyre Borough Council seeking clarification. Park homes are a unique form of home ownership. The park home owner owns the park home but not the ground it’s located on and the home isn’t physically attached to the ground. There are many different types of licensed sites on which mobile homes can be located. This can lead to some confusion and, at times, problems for home owners, as different laws apply to different types of sites. The park site owner must have planning permission and a site licence from the local authority. This site licence will state whether the site is a holiday site or fully residential. In some instances the licence may allow both permanent and holiday homes. Many buyers have unwittingly bought homes as a permanent abode only to find out later that they can only live in it for a limited period of the year – it may state on the agreement for example that they can only live in it for ten or eleven months of the year. Any occupation which doesn’t follow the licence conditions is a breach of contract and the repercussions can be serious. The Local Authority can take enforcement action against the site owner. Alternatively the site owner can seek to recover the pitch, if a home owner is occupying the site as their main residence, instead of as a holiday home. Holiday homes are not protected by park
homes legislation such as The Caravan Sites Act 1968, The Mobile Homes Act 1983 and The Mobile Homes Act 2013. As a result occupiers don’t have the same rights or recourse to the law as those on permanent residential sites. More importantly, the occupier doesn’t have the same security of tenure. Some of my constituents have been asked to provide a family member’s address as their ‘permanent address’ to hide the reality of their living in a ‘holiday’ home and not a permanent home. I’ve also been told by residents that as they own holiday homes rather than permanent park homes, they would usually not be charged Council Tax. However, they say, the Council is aware that most people are living there full time and have recently begun charging Council Tax to all permanent residents. This has resulted in many constituents being charged twice for services such as waste collection, as they pay site fees for the owners to undertake waste collection and keep the park in order. The constituents accept that they can be charged Council Tax as permanent residents, but they feel it should be charged at a reduced rate, due to the majority of services being provided by the site owners. The site owners also receive a reduced Council Tax bill for the site based on the number of residents paying tax, leaving constituents paying twice and both the Council and the owners unfairly in profit. If you want to purchase a fully residential park home, it’s important to ensure that the site is a ‘protected site’, which is a permanent residential site. However as there are also some sites with both types of residence you should look closely at the pitch agreement before purchase.

CAT SMITH MP (cont) If you are having problems on your site then please get in touch with me and let me know how I can help. You can email me on cat. smith.mp@parliament.uk or call my office on (01253) 490440. I’ll update you when I’ve had a response from the Council and the Government.
All four of the Police Community Support Officers (PCSO’s) are staying in Over Wyre. In addition there will be a separate dedicated team monitoring crime trends – if there is a spike in a particular area they will be deployed to investigate this rather than taking up the resources of the PCSO’s.
Constituents in Over Wyre have been contacting me to express concern over cuts to the police service. Officers from Lancashire Constabulary have now confirmed with me the changes they intend to make.
I can’t believe the summer is nearly over and children across the constituency are about to go back to school. My little boy Eli is now eight weeks old and as all parents will appreciate, his arrival has turned our lives upside down! He’s already been out with me meeting and chatting to people about local and national issues and I’m looking forward to bringing him to Over Wyre in the near future. I hope for parents that the transition from summer holidays to ‘back to school’ goes smoothly and the autumn term is a happy one for all our youngsters.
In Over Wyre, rather than having neighbourhood policing officers based out of Garstang until 10:00pm there will now be response officers based in Garstang 24 hours of the day. The Police service says this means officers will be able to attend Preesall, Pilling and Knott End quicker than officers being brought from Fleetwood and Lancaster if a 999 call is made after 10:00pm.

ST JOHN’S HOSPICE Green Fingers at St John’s Hospice I took slightly early retirement and the opportunity became available to me to be a gardening volunteer at St John’s. But then it soon became apparent that being retired was, maybe, not quite everything its cracked up to be. I had for the previous ten years got to the office for 9:00am and left at 5:00pm and whilst sat at my desk had pondered what retirement might bring. Anyway to cut a long story short, now retired, I needed to find a new purpose. I had heard about St John’s Hospice and that they had a variety of opportunities for volunteers and

even looked online to see what was available. Eventually I got around to sending in an application form to volunteer in the garden, well actually, the vegetable garden. I have always had some interest in gardening and have enjoyed growing a few bit and bobs at home. At St John’s we have an area where we now grow a variety of produce: salads, tomatoes, peas, beans, cabbage, cauli’s, onions, leeks, cucumbers, courgettes, squashes, strawberries, red and black currants, gooseberries etc, in fact we will try just about anything. As much as possible is used in the kitchens to feed staff, patients and now provide a supply for the café that is on site, open to anyone who visits. greenhouse on site and plant and harvest as demand arises. There is a small team of us who maintain the patch, all volunteers, and between us we try and cover five days a week planting, watering and harvesting and I have to say its great fun.
Dolphinholme
We try and produce as much of our own compost as we can with a six bay system, using selected waste from the kitchen, grass cuttings, leaves from the many trees on site and various other excess plant trimmings on the patch, as our aim is to try and keep the thing going without costing an arm and a leg and with as few chemicals as possible. If we manage to over-produce we now have a plant stall at the entrance to the Hospice where we can sell any excess to help raise funds for St John’s. In fact this year I have expanded my work load by also growing various plants from seed or growing on younger plants for the stall, supplemented with a few plants bought in to sell on, all to help raise funds. This is at an early stage but has proved to be very popular with staff, volunteers and visitors alike and it looks like I have found another way to keep me even busier in the future! Life as a volunteer is very fulfilling and especially at St Johns where everyone is very friendly and I can come and go, doing whatever hours I want, whether on the veg patch or helping with other events - there really is always something to do and the bottom line is that it’s all for a very good cause for the local community. Dolphinholme is that lovely village many people come to for cycle rides, walks, a visit to the Fleece Inn, to see friends or to pass through en route to the Trough of Bowland. St Mark’s Church was built and consecrated in the late 19 Century on the site of a previous church which had become unstable. Many folks may have visited for weddings or baptisms. It is a beautiful spot and makes for a perfect setting for photographs. It celebrates 120 years in 2019. Building up to this celebration, we are planning a number of special events. There will be leaflets detailing our forthcoming programme available when you visit our lovely place of worship. The first of these events is a ‘Celebration of Austin and Paley’ at St Mark’s Church. Austin and Paley, Architects, were the foremost designers/architects of buildings in and around Lancaster. Their legacy apart from St Mark’s includes; The RLI hospital, Ravenglass Station, Morecambe Promenade Station, Royal Albert Infirmary, Lancaster Priory, Militia Barracks, Town Hall, The Gregson, Ryelands House extensions and many more in Cheshire, Cumbria and all around Lancashire. The variety of buildings included hotels, hospitals, halls and many churches remain for us today as solid and beautiful reminders of the Victorian era. We hope to emphasise some of this great legacy at St Mark’s on the weekend of Sat 29th & Sun 30th Sept this year with talks given by experts and there will be clear displays showing their work and lives. Also refreshements will be served between 10:00am - 4:00pm both days. There will also be a brunch served between 11:00am and 1:00pm of bacon baps or veggie equivalent. Come and see us and meet some of our friendly villagers and visiting experts. We will do our very best to make you feel welcome. Ruth Chapman

GP90 marked 90 years since the original Royal British Legion Pilgrimage in 1928, which saw 11,000 World War One veterans and war widows visit the battlefields of the Somme in France and Ypres in Belgium, a decade after the conflict ended. That Pilgrimage culminated in a march through Ypres to the Commonwealth War Grave Commission’s Menin Gate Memorial for a ceremony to commemorate the launch of The Hundred Days Offensive and in remembrance of those who never returned. Local Legion member Roger Dunn was the Standard Bearer and David Brewin was the Wreath Layer and both represented the Garstang Branch and the local community at the event. Roger and David toured some of the same battlefields and cemeteries visited by those on the 1928 Pilgrimage, before marching along the original route through Ypres, to the Menin Gate on Wed 8th Aug, bearing their Branch Standard and a wreath. They were joined by more than 2,200 other Legion representatives and dignitaries, including Civic and military guests from the UK, Commonwealth and Northern Europe who were taking part. Once at the Menin Gate, David Brewin laid a wreath on behalf of the Garstang community. Standard bearer Roger Dunn, of the Garstang Branch of The Royal British Legion, comments: ‘Great Pilgrimage 90 was a unique opportunity for the Legion community to come together and bear our Standards along the same route in Ypres taken 90 years earlier by the veterans and widows of the First World War. The Garstang Branch were proud to march alongside a number of other branches representing Lancashire at the event.’ As

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION (cont) the Garstang Branch of The Royal British Legion worked in partnership with their local community to take their unique Remembrance message to the Menin Gate on their wreath, where it is being displayed in a large wreath installation for viewing by the general public until the end of August. The public were encouraged to make the trip across to Ypres for Wed 8th Aug. They filled the Market Square to watch the parade and One Hundred Days ceremony. Following the parade, everyone there was encouraged to join together to take part in an afternoon of comradeship and entertainment in the Great Square, where there were tableaux, stalls, exhibits and musical entertainment provided by The Central Band of the Royal British Legion and Royal Marines. If you want to find out more about GP90 or your local Royal British Legion branch, then please visit www.britishlegion.org.uk or contact David Brewin 07984 405 739.

ST MICHAEL’S LADIES SOCIAL CLUB The speaker at the August meeting of St Michael’s Ladies Social Club was Gladys Armstrong, who in 1984 worked as a PA for the Marconi company. Then her life took a complete change of direction when she volunteered to help at Whipsnade zoo. Her tasks included explaining a table of animal and birds parts, horns, birds beaks etc to children visiting the Zoo. Whilst some elephants can be aggressive Gladys made friends with one by placing her hand into its considerable mouth and tickling its tongue! Three years later Gladys recognised the same elephant at another zoo. It’s keeper allowed her to repeat the tickling and the elephant remembered Gladys. Gladys also made friends with a well behaved chimp and eventually taught him to
write his name, Jamey. Amazing! Later at Southport Zoo Gladys set up another programme for volunteers for which she received a star award, out of thousands of others, for her work for education in her field. What amazing experiences Gladys had in her life. A very unusual talk. The meeting on Thurs 13th Sept at 7:30pm will be at the Village Hall about the ‘Blood Bikers’. Do come along. You will be made welcome. Judith Hunter
CLAUGHTON ON BROCK WI The guest speaker at our August meeting was Dr Michael Paris, from the University of Central Lancashire, whose talk was entitled ‘Land Girls and Secret Agents - Women in WW2’. It was an enthralling glimpse into the past and the significance of the 100th anniversary of Equal Rights and Votes for Women. The emancipation of women during the First World War enabled women to become bus drivers or police officers and take on roles unheard of during the reign of Queen Victoria, only a few years earlier. How proud we felt of our female predecessors who played a crucial role, especially in the military hospitals. Thank you Michael, for an engrossing talk. Looking ahead to September, our guest speaker is Anita Heyes, who will be revealing aromatic secrets with her ‘Stories of Perfume’. Please join our friendly group of WI ladies on Tues 4th Sept at Claughton Village Hall from 7:30pm onwards. Maureen Collinson (01995) 640519

DISRESPECT NOBODY An Anti Bullying Campaign On Sun 23rd Sept at 2:00pm St Luke’s Church, Winmarleigh have invited Charlie Baguley to speak on the vital issue of bullying and online bullying in particular. Charlie is 15 years old and is an International Youth Ambassador for the Childnet’s Project deShame. This is a project supported by the Home Office which aims to increase reporting of online sexual harassment among young people and improve the way different sectors co-operate in preventing and responding to such damaging behaviour. Charlie became involved in this work after witnessing the aftermath of sexting, online sexual harassment and similar types of behaviour - including supporting a close friend who had been a victim of such behaviour. This is a rare opportunity to hear an informed young man talk on a subject that is negatively affecting many of our young people and something that we should try to protect them from and eradicate. This talk will be of interest to people of all ages, young people, parents, carers, grandparents, teachers, community leaders in fact anyone with concerns about this issue or wishes to know more about it for the future. There is no charge to come along and hear Charlie speak. Brenda Brodie
