GARSTANG CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
Life Long Learning Fri 2nd Nov 2:00pm URC Church Hall
Come and join us at Garstang’s historic Market Cross to switch on Garstang’s new 2018 Christmas Lights on Mon 26th Nov at 6:00pm.
Our speakers this month are Carole and Harry Johnson on ‘Jam Just as it Should Be’. They not only make and sell their own jam, they are also owners of what was Woodend Colliery, Reedly Hallows, Burnley, the last small pit which closed in 1959. From artifacts found around the area they have built up a fascinating museum, complete with tea and gift shop which is the result of their interest in mining in this area.
Be one of the first to see the new Christmas Lights at our traditional family celebration with music, carols and a warm festive feeling! Kate Pollard - Visit Garstang
TIME TO CHAT Fri 30th Nov 10:30am - 12:30pm Garstang Library

GARSTANG TREFOIL GUILD
KIRKLAND CHRISTMAS MARKET
Thurs 22nd Nov 7:30pm Garstang Library Meeting Room
Fri 30th Nov 6:30pm - 9:00pm Kirkland and Catterall Memorial Hall
This month our meeting will be an evening of crafts with Alice Richardson.
Kirkland’s Christmas Market (hosted by Team Kirkland) is in its 4th year and, due to its success, we are once again bringing together a hand picked selection of local and unique stalls selling gifts, crafts and foodie treats that are perfect for Christmas gifts.
The Trefoil Guild is a national organisation linked to and supporting Girlguiding UK and is open to anyone over 18 who supports the aims and principles of Guiding but perhaps does not have the time to help run a unit on a regular basis. We have a local programme of speakers, activities and outings and can also join in with County or National events.
The market is free to attend with something for all the family – including children’s stalls, carol singing and hot refreshments too! If you’d like a stall at the event please contact teamkirkland@outlook.com
We are a small friendly group and all are welcome. You do not need to have been a Guide or Scout previously.

GARSTANG’S GREAT WAR Armistice Centenary Preparations are coming together as Garstang gets ready to remember the town’s war dead on Sun 11th Nov which this year coincides with the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War. To mark the special day various events and displays will be taking place during the first two weeks of November. One such is a display of material related to Garstang and district in the Great War. The display has been prepared by local historian Paul G Smith, co-author of the book ‘Garstang’s Great War Heroes’. The display is currently in the window of Garstang’s Market House, next to the old Town Hall, and will be of interest to people from throughout the rural area. The final event of the various Garstang
commemorations is a lecture by Mr Smith on Sun 11th Nov, 7:30pm at St Thomas’s Parish / Community Hall (behind the vicarage) on Church Street. ‘Victory 1918 - How the Allies Won the War’. It will cover the so-called ‘100 Days’, from the Battle of Amiens to the Armistice, and includes references to several local servicemen who died for their country. It is sponsored by Garstang Historical Society. Tickets for the event (price £5, including refreshments) are available at Market Place News, Market Place, Garstang, PR3 1ZA. All proceeds will go to Garstang’s poppy appeal. Copies of the book ‘Garstang’s Great War Heroes’ remain available, price £5. (Outlets: Market Place News and the Visit Garstang Centre, near Booths). Sales of the book over the past three years have raised several thousand pounds for Garstang Poppy Appeal. Free copies of the book have been donated to pupils at the primary schools in Garstang and Bonds. Scores more copies of the book will be given to new pupils at the three primary schools early in November. Anthony Coppin

MEDICINAL CANNABIS Has the door opened to medical cannabis? Perhaps we need to understand what medical cannabis is before I answer that question: Currently there is one approved cannabis medicine that can be prescribed called Sativex but at present it is only given as a last resort and only for people who have Multiple Sclerosis related spasms. This is a very narrow group of people that can use the medicine. This product contains CBD which is now commonly available in good health food shops and THC – the cannabinoid that is psychoactive which means it can get you ‘high’ or ‘stoned’. So medical cannabis has THC in it - currently a Schedule One drug which means it is regarded as having no medicinal value and can only be used for research with a licence. As of Thurs 1st Nov this year it will be classed as a Schedule Two drug because there is growing evidence that it has medicinal
benefits and it no longer has to be used as a last resort but can be prescribed if your doctor feels it will be appropriate for your problem. Cannabis research has exploded in the last three decades from just 200 research papers in the early nineties to approximately 20,000 on PubMed today. However, that does not mean the door has been opened to us all charging down to the surgery today to get our hit of cannabis! Because it is psychoactive you cannot drive whilst using it and many work places would sack you if they found you had THC in your system as it can affect your state of mind. THC is also a substance that does not agree with everyone. It can make you feel nauseous or anxious amongst other issues. Of course it can also make you euphoric and happy! I don’t think cannabis has ever caused anyone to fight or kick in a shop window - unlike a drug we find acceptable called alcohol. Here is a description of how Sativex can make people feel: ‘The most common side effects with Sativex are dizziness and tiredness. Some people may also feel depressed or confused, may feel over-excited or lose touch with reality, may have difficulties with memory or trouble concentrating and may feel sleepy or giddy.’ There is no doubt it does help people too, so we must not look at that description negatively and especially compared to the long list of side effects many modern pharmaceutical drugs come with. Fortunately, this does not happen with CBD type products which are safe. Those of you who regularly use CBD oil will undoubtedly recognise the benefits that cannabis products can bring to your quality of life. Thus it is fair to say the door has opened to the wider use of medicinal cannabis but it will not be suitable for everyone. Nick Tofalos

GARSTANG PAINTING GROUP During the whole of November, a wide variety of paintings by the membership will be on exhibition at the Garstang Arts Centre. This will be a perfect opportunity for the public to call in and view what a range of subjects Garstang Painting Group are capable of, and the quality of their artistic ability. Most of the paintings will be offered for sale at very reasonable prices and could prove to be a perfect present for that friend who has everything! On Wed 14th Nov we are to enjoy a members only workshop run by Cally Lawson on ‘Brusho’ techniques entitled ‘Butterfly, Flowers and Ferns’ which promises to be very interesting and could open the doors to a very different style and technique of illustration for the future. An important event in our calendar is our Annual General Meeting which takes place on Wed 21st Nov at 1:30pm when the
committee for 2019 is chosen and various matters of importance are discussed. In the meantime it is business as usual with all members practising their skills with paintbrush, pastel or pencil for future exhibitions or simply for pleasure every Wednesday afternoon between 1:00pm and 4:00pm. FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES
Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?
Dr Finlay Sutton
If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.
Brenda’s Testimonial
Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

COMPUTER ADVICE Firstly, what is Social Media? It’s a general term which covers lots of websites and computer/ phone/tablet applications that enable users to share ideas and experiences and to create virtual network and communities. It includes sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Snapchat, Tumblr, WhatsApp, Google+ and many more. A word or two about Social Media this month. Social Media for many people has become a way of life – it enables millions of people all around the world to stay in touch with family and friends, share experiences and photographs and exchange personal content. It has replaced telephone and email for lots of users. The benefits, especially for people who couldn’t otherwise keep in touch, can be huge. But there are also some huge risks and problems to be aware of.
Over the years, several of them have had security breaches. The latest in that score is Google+, which recently announced that it had been having some problems and will actually be closing down completely in a few months time. This probably won’t concern many readers, as it was never a very popular site in this country but if you do happen to have an account, I would suggest that you consider closing it down now if you can. Facebook has also recently declared some issues and required a large number of users

On Mon 15th Oct we welcomed Stuart Rothwell from the Vineyard wineshop in Ramsbottom. The town of Ramsbottom is quickly getting a reputation as a foodie destination, with its tapas bars, chocolate shop, numerous cafes, local restaurants, brewery and Stuart’s excellent wineshop. In addition, for those with an interest, you can watch or catch a steam train from the beautifully restored station on the East Lancs Railway. Stuart provided us with a selection of wines from Portugal. The table wines from that country are overshadowed by both those from its Iberian neighbour, Spain, and by the products of its port houses.

GARSTANG WINE CIRCLE (cont) As we discovered during this evening, the country produces some excellent wines, most of which are produced from indigenous grape varieties. It is a shame that retailers often have limited stocks of Portuguese wine We started with a taste of white port, both with and without tonic, a drink popular as an aperitif with the Portuguese. We followed with a Vinho Verde and two other white wines, all of which were light and fresh. Four reds followed, all of which demonstrated the high quality of reds that are currently being produced in Portugal. We finished with a sample of dessert wine produced in the Setubal Region, a delicious way to end an excellent tasting. The refreshments for the evening were produced by Jackie Hastings and Glynis Jefferson, and the vote of thanks was given by Philippa Catterall. The next meeting of the Wine Circle will be at
7:30pm on Mon 19th Nov at the Arts Centre. The speaker will be Mick Gould, who will present a selection of wines from the USA. Details of the meeting and of membership of the circle can be obtained from Alan Jefferson (01995) 601842. Mervyn Stokes

GARSTANG ARTS CENTRE November Art Exhibition Two members of Garstang Arts Centre Painting Group invite you to their joint exhibition which runs until Thurs 15th Nov. Holly Balasubramanyam had no experience of art when she started to paint at the Arts Centre many years ago. Her favourite medium is pastel but she also tries to mix acrylics and ink into her work. The monthly demonstrations and workshops at the Painting Group provide her with new ideas and techniques. Felicity Hallsworth takes inspiration from her watercolour sketchbook which accompanies her along the fells and tarns of the Lake District and the coastal paths of Cornwall. Although mainly working in watercolour and acrylic, new mediums entice her from printing and collage to brusho and pastel. On Tues 20th Nov Margaret Rodwell’s solo exhibition ‘Nature’s Bounty’ aims to show the
beauty of nature - whether it is a landscape bathed in sunlight or covered in snow, or flowers from all four seasons of the year. Margaret works in watercolour, pastel and mixed media and her exhibition closes on Thur 13th Dec. Work by all three artists is offered for sale; an opportunity to buy an original piece of art. Sheila Tearle (01995) 603816 The Ukulele Part 2 The early 20th Century was a period of popularity for the ukulele in America. From Al Jolson to Joan Crawford, everyone seemed to be playing the ukulele. During the First World War the YMCA in America sent hundreds of ukuleles for American troops to enjoy and in the process the instrument was introduced to Europe. However, while its popularity waned in the US during the depression of the 1930, a

GARSTANG ARTS CENTRE (cont) Lancashire lad called George Formby was making it very popular here. George played the banjolele which is a ukulele with a banjo resonator. His right-hand action was magic as he strummed his triplets at such a speed as to create his signature sound. George was full of inuendo and his songs have endured for almost a hundred years. The George Formby Society have four conventions each year in Blackpool, the next one being on 17th & 18th Nov at the Imperial hotel. For many people, if you mention the ukulele they think first of George Formby. However, most community ukulele groups play very little of his music, though we now have four Formby songs in our repertoire. Classrooms in the Clouds
Songbirds Songbirds is a very friendly ladies group. We do not give performances, just enjoy singing a wide repertoire and welcome those who have never sung in a group before, as well as those who sing well but do not want the commitment of a ‘proper’ choir!
Last year, our club project was Classrooms in the Clouds (CitC). We hosted several events to raise money to support this charity, as well as helping to publicise the good work the charity does in Nepal.
We meet every Monday (except Bank Holidays) at 1:30pm. On the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month there will be piano accompaniment. Dates will be on The Arts Centre noticeboard.
In October Kate Roberts, Communications Officer for CitC, came to one of our meetings to give us an update on the project, let us know how the money raised will be spent and, of course, collect the cheque for the £800 we raised in the year.

The projects undertaken by CitC are not just about creating classrooms for the children, they also look into promoting health and wellbeing for the children and in particular, for girls. Having a period can mean staying away from school for girls as they can’t afford the necessary sanitary protection. So one project introduced by CitC is the reusable sanitary pad, allowing the girls both dignity and an uninterrupted education. Teachers are also benefitting from grants, allowing them to take part in exchange visits to the UK. This is great for the female teachers (Nepal is dominated by male tutors) introducing them to female role models and giving them the opportunity to gain experiences which can be shared with other teachers back in Nepal, as well as lots of ideas to share with the children. The project continues to build more classrooms, libraries and water filtration systems and all these works are constructed to high standards to be earthquake proof. The charity is going from strength to strength and continues to help the children of Nepal with support from partners new and old. See

CAT SMITH MP I was delighted in October to officially mark the installation of a new community defibrillator at the Kepplegate Nursing Home in Preesall. The home had been raising funds to purchase one but instead Over Wyre Community First Responders donated one to the community, so a huge thank you to them. Kepplegate have now been able to donate the money they had raised to some great charities and local community groups. As you may know a defibrillator is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall to someone who is in cardiac arrest. This high energy shock is called defibrillation, and it’s an essential lifesaving step in the chain of survival. If you come across someone who has had a cardiac arrest, it’s vital to call 999 and start CPR. Then you should find out if there is a defibrillator nearby.

In my part of the constituency in Over Wyre there is a defibrillator outside St John’s C. of E. School in Pilling, one at Fleetwoods Charity C. of E. School in Preesall, one at St Oswalds Church, another at the Police and Fire Stations, and one at the Knott End Working Men’s Club. The defibrillators come with instructions and the 999 responders will also talk you through the process. Please don’t be afraid of using one, you could save someone’s life by your swift action. As I’ve already highlighted, the Universal Credit was supposed to be rolling out in our area next month. Now we don’t know if it’s happening or not. I and the Labour Party

CAT SMITH MP (cont) have fought against this new benefits system ever since it was first proposed. Now even Conservative MPs have recognised that it’s having a devastating effect on many groups including homeowners, working single parents, young people and the disabled. It’s been revealed that almost two in five households in receipt of benefits will lose an average of £52 a week. They include a million homeowners currently receiving tax credits, 750,000 households on disability benefit and some 600,000 working single parents. The system was originally supposed to be up and running by April 2017, but is now not expected to be fully operational until December 2023. I’m delighted that a new support group is starting in Over Wyre for parents of children who have additional needs. As with a lot of rural areas there are very few support services available and very few groups that provide emotional and practical guidance, advice and friendship. The two mums who are starting the group want to begin with meet-ups over coffee before eventually introducing activities with the children during the school holidays. They’ve launched their own Facebook page ‘Over Wyre Parent/Carer Support Group’ which you are welcome to join or you can email laurarumney@aol.com or contact Laura or Catherine on 07795 833 251. So if you live in Preesall, Knott-End or surrounding areas then please don’t be shy in making contact. I hope the new group brings the opportunity of making new friends and creating a valuable support network for all carers. I’m deeply upset by the High Court’s decision to allow fracking for shale gas to go ahead in our county.

CAT SMITH MP (cont) As a first time mum I’m now even more concerned about the future of our planet and the environmental legacy our children will inherit. Cuadrilla has now started the process of pumping water, chemicals and sand underground at high pressure to fracture shale rock 2km below the surface of the earth. Last month the world’s leading climate scientists warned fossil fuel use must be cut dramatically to limit temperature rises. They say there’s only a dozen years left for global warming to be kept to a maximum of 1.5C. Once it goes up by even half a degree there will be a significant risk of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people – including us here in the UK. It’s critical we re-engage with countries

seeking to walk away from the Paris Climate Accords. But we must also lead by example. Labour has set out plans for energy that are ambitious, will create hundreds of thousands of jobs and will make Britain the only developed country outside Scandinavia to be on track to meet our climate change obligations. By 2030 we’re committed to creating a sevenfold increase in offshore windfarms and a tripling of solar power, enabling nearly 20m homes to be powered by wind and solar. By 2030 we would double the number of onshore windfarms. Our programme of investment and transformation to achieve a 60% reduction in emissions by 2030 would create over 400,000 skilled jobs - a Green Jobs Revolution that would help tackle climate change, provide sustainable energy for the future and create skilled jobs in every

BEN WALLACE MP Here we are in November with, dare I say it Christmas just round the corner. Remembrance November is a special month each year when we remember all those who have sacrificed everything for our future and those who live with the scars of war, physical or physiological. Of course this year marks 100 years since the end of the First World War, a war that devastated a generation. While walking through Poulton recently, I noticed that large poppies are on the lamp posts in The Square and in surrounding roads. These were organised by local Royal British Legion volunteers and are a striking display.
There is also a ‘therebutnotthere’ display in St Chad’s Church with silhouettes representing the fallen. A charity called Remembered is responsible for the silhouettes and I know there are installations all over Lancashire and beyond. While looking through the literature for the charity, I noticed its three main aims were to commemorate, educate and heal. I really think these aims say it all: We must commemorate all who made the ultimate sacrifice and in doing so we will educate future generations and we must also heal today’s veterans who are suffering as a result of war and conflict. Throughout the constituency schools, churches, local groups etc are marking the centenary with various events varying in size. Having served in the Armed Forces myself, November is always a time for remembrance and quiet reflection. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM! Energy Comparison With winter approaching, I would like to highlight the benefits of comparing energy tariffs and suppliers to ensure the best possible deal for customers. This process can be daunting for some and confusing but, significant savings can be achieved.

As many of you will know the Sunday service ceased to run at Easter as the operator, Catch22Bus, found the route commercially

helpful and are always welcome.
The absence of the Sunday service has had a detrimental impact on many of my Over Wyre constituents and I believe the County should step in. I have also highlighted that there is no out of hours medical service in Over Wyre and residents who need to see a GP on a Sunday are required to travel to Fleetwood or Freckleton. Without private transport accessing these medical centres is extremely difficult. I have also written to Blackpool Transport highlighting a request to look at the route of the 2C weekday service from Knott-End to Blackpool with a view that it is extended to create a bus stop close to the Over Wyre Medical Centre.

I would support the service stopping at the Medical Centre as this would benefit a great number of my constituents but it is also important that the current route is maintained. Your views on this would be

ROTARY Rotary Polio Eradication Initiative The Global Polio Eradication Initiative is a public-private partnership led by National Governments with five partners – the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Since Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1985 the incidence of polio has plummeted from about 350,000 cases a year in 125 countries to just 22 cases in 2017 and with just three remaining polio-endemic countries: Afghanistan; Pakistan; and Nigeria.
Many Rotarians have, at their own expense, joined teams to help in National Immunisation Days (NID’s) around the world. Whilst tremendous progress has been made, the final steps on any journey are often the some of the hardest and 2018 has been far from easy, with 14 cases in the first eight months of the year. The objective is that, after smallpox, polio becomes just the second human disease ever to be eradicated. We believe that the end is in sight and to this end Rotary has committed to raising US$150 (£115 million) between 2017 and 2020 in support of global eradication efforts. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed to match Rotary’s success at a ratio of 2:1. Thus every £1 raised becomes £3. Without full funding and the political commitment, this paralysing disease could

ROTARY (cont) return to previously polio-free countries, putting children around the world at risk, including the UK. Rotary has contributed more than £1.38 billion to ending polio since 1985. This includes over £5,000 contributed by the Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre. Rotary will continue to collect donations for this important initiative until Polio is eliminated world-wide. As in the UK it will be necessary to continue to vaccinate new born children until polio is completely eliminated worldwide with a special emphasis on the larger poor communities. Early in the New Year the President of Garstang and Over Wyre Rotary will travel to India to join a in a Polio immunisation team of 24 UK Rotarians. They will be travelling to an industrial town in Rajasthan, Bhiwadi, with a population of around 120,000 some 60 kilometres from Delhi. We look forward to receiving his report on his return.

LIONS Donations A contribution is to be made to assist a local girl to undertake lifeguard training to allow her to obtain the necessary qualifications.
Following a donation of £200 for materials and equipment, two Club members were invited to watch the work of the Garstang Arts Group (held every Thurs at Garstang Fire Station 6:00pm - 7:30pm). Run by local professional artists, Emma Underwood and Omar Aboo it has been in operation for six months. The classes are aimed at juniors from 6 to 14 years of age, who are keen to create their own paintings in their own time. They are able to try new techniques and explore new mediums. Both Lion members were very impressed with each individual artist and it was good to see
that our donation had enabled this group to progress with their own individual work. Fylde Women’s Aid have a continued need for new clothing items ( babies, small children or ladies); new toys, new cosmetic or new toiletries. Collection point at the Resource Centre (the offices of the old Liberal Club) on Bridge Street. Events and Activities Garstang Lions were triumphant in the recent Zone Quiz and supplied both the winning team and also that of the runners up. Several other local clubs took part and this proved to be a fun evening. We will now be in a strict training regime as we seek to defend our championship trophy next year. The Garstang Memory Café Group held a coffee morning on Thurs 4th Oct in the URC hall and sold a wide variety of items on various stalls raising valuable funds for the group with several of our members assisting. On Mon 15th Oct there was a very well attended and successful afternoon tea event with some excellent refreshments supplied by the local Coffee Pot café.

CRY Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund CRY National Raising Awareness Week 17th – 25th Nov and CRY Great Cake Bake When our son collapsed and died on a night out in August 2011 we were absolutely devastated. How could an ostensibly fit and active 22 year old die without warning? Sadly we were to learn that this happens with alarming regularity. CRY affirms that in the UK alone 12 seemingly fit and healthy young people fall victim to Young Sudden Cardiac Death (YSCD) every week of the year. But why does this happen? For a few, like our son Matt, the cause remains unknown as any irregularity in the electrical/chemical activity of a heart can only be identified whilst a person is alive. That’s why we feel all young people should have the choice to be screened. Whilst no screening is fool proof, surely if a simple 10
minute ECG can detect and save just one young person’s life then, to us as parents who have loved and lost a beautiful, treasured son, it makes huge sense to test. From Mon 19th Nov - Fri 23rd Nov look out for our information display at Garstang Medical Centre. If you’d like to have a chat or buy Christmas cards to support the fund we’ll be there Mon - Wed from 2:00pm - 4:00pm and all day on Fri 23rd Nov. We will be taking part in the CRY Great Cake Bake when lots of delicious baked goodies will be on offer – saving lives one slice at a time! Conway Cards on Garstang High Street also have a fabulous display of Christmas cards for CRY, with 24 designs available, and we’ll be at the Charity Card Sale at the URC on Sat 10th Nov 9:00am – 12:30pm joining many other charities offering Christmas goodies and cards. GARSTANG RUNNING CLUB Myerscough 10 Road Race Sun Dec 2nd Garstang Running Club is now preparing for the Myerscough 10 mile Road Race. Last year was the first time this event was held and everyone agreed it was a great location and we are pleased that the partnership between the college and the running club will continue through 2019 and hopefully beyond. We are also grateful to the Garstang Lions who will be assisting us once again with carparking. We hope to attract up to 400 runners and although there is plenty of parking space available it is a bonus having someone to direct cars. The car park is next to the race headquarters at the Equestrian Centre. Once again there will be refreshments available and we expect the bacon buns will go down just as well as last year! After all, if you run ten miles you need some means of regaining that lost energy! (Not to mention the energy just watching them do it!)
This will be the last club race of the year. The half marathon in September went very well with the winner, Tristan Windey from Keswick AC, doing a splendid 1 hour 15 minutes and 39 seconds. He was well out on his own with Robert Walsh of Chorley AC following at 1:23:35 and Neil Adair, also Chorley AC in 1:25:45. First lady was Sarah Glyde from Todmorden Harriers in 1:42:43 followed in 1:44:02 by Jayne Perry a member of our own club! Third was Jayne Dandy, unattached, in 1:45:07. Other club members taking part were Graeme Murray, Phil Cray, Graham Openshaw, Colin Walton, Mary Hewitt (1st FV60) and finally Danielle Burrows who ran as a back marker. The club membership is steadily growing, thanks to the friendly atmosphere at the Tuesday evening runs – not to forget the success of the ‘Couch to 5k’ sessions led
The race will start at 10:00am so all runners are asked to collect their numbers by 9:30am. Online entry is available from the link on the club website. It is better to enter beforehand as it is a popular race. However if the limit of 400 isn’t reached there will be entries available on the day. The race starts at 10:00am and is just a couple of hundred metres down from the Equestrian Centre. The route includes a lap and a half through the college before heading off up St.Michael’s Road. The route will be well signposted with plenty of marshals, mile markers and a couple of water stations. When the runners return they finish opposite the Equestrian Centre – very handy for a cup of tea and bacon bun! When they finish each runner will receive a Sandham’s Lancashire cheese as a reward for their efforts.

for camaraderie, for socialising and to make new friends. There are no bounds. Locally there are Speakers Clubs in Preston, Morecambe, Garstang (Ladies only), Lytham and Poulton-le-Fylde. And now Hollins Lane, Forton has one too. South Lancaster Speakers Club. Pop these dates in your diary and come to Forton on Wed 14th & 28th Nov. No obligation and all welcome. ST MICHAEL’S LADIES SOCIAL CLUB Members were welcomed to the meeting on Thurs 11th Oct. Our speaker for the evening was Sue Mantle and she gave a very amusing talk entitled ‘Setting Up My Allotment’. Inspired by her father working on his allotment in her youth she acquired one of her own in later life. Sue recounted anecdotes of how she and an equally enthusiastic gardening friend took on a very overgrown and neglected allotment and by hard work, determination and resourcefulness have cultivated many prolific harvests. Sue generously said that she intended to donate her fee for the talk to Fleetwood Lifeboat, prompting an enthusiastic show of appreciation. Our next meeting is on Thurs 8th Nov at 7:30pm when the speaker will be Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines, with a talk entitled ‘Last Train to Tomorrow’, remembering her youth and experiences during WW2. Our final meeting was a joy! We were educated and entertained in equal measure by Andrew Thompson from The Barn, Scorton, who potted up a variety of winter plants into wonderful containers. It was inspirational. Thank you Andrew.
We had a high attendance in October for Jeff Ashworth’s blend of ‘The Seasons’ with a wider medley of ‘Show-Stoppers’. He mixed seasonal numbers like Vivaldi’s ‘Spring’ and Gershwin’s ‘Summertime’ with music ranging from Handel to Barry, with Beethoven, the ubiquitous ‘Anon’ and many others, to give us a very enjoyable evening.
We were happy to see so many friends and guests for our last meeting of the season. Thank you to everyone who supported us in 2018. We have built up a reputation for being a small and friendly group, where you will find good company and excellent home made cakes! We begin the new season in March 2019, so we wish you all health and happiness until then. Jan Finch (01995) 604771 Netta Parker (01995) 605385

RSPCA Bailey Bailey is an enthusiastic dog who came into the Centre due to his owner’s change of circumstances. He enjoys his walks and is generally well mannered but lacks boundaries when greeting new people and other dogs. He likes the company of other dogs but would only be suited to live with a tolerant dog due to his boisterous nature.
now seeing his friendly side but he can be temperamental so will need an experienced, confident and understanding cat owner who doesn’t mind being told off now and again and who is willing to give him his ‘me’ time and plenty of space to come around. Due to his bold nature we feel Brody would suit an experienced, quieter home where he can have safe outdoor access and be the only pet.
He would be much better suited to an active home with a patient owner willing to give him the guidance he needs.
Coco & Clover
Brody
They can both be shy bunnies so are in need of some confidence building and positive human interaction. They are looking for an owner who has plenty of time to socialise with them. They need to be re-homed together and will need a double tier hutch and a large attached run where they will have plenty of space to exercise and explore.
Brody is a cat that was transferred to the Animal Centre via a local veterinary practice after he was found as an injured stray. When Brody arrived he was quite nervous but has since settled in and is now much happier and comfortable in his surroundings. We are

GARSTANG MEDICAL PRACTICE Dr John We are sad to announce that Dr Mel John is retiring on the 2nd December this year. It goes without saying that he will be very sorely missed by all his staff, colleagues and patients. We wish him the very best for the future. Flu Vaccinations Our next Saturday clinic for flu vaccinations is Sat 17th Nov. There are still a number of appointments available to book. We also have ad hoc appointments available in October and November. You can book via reception, online with Patient Access if you are already registered, or you can use the myGP app which is quick and easy to download from Google Play or the App store for your smartphone. Children’s nasal spray flu vaccinations are available to book via reception only. Eligible children are those aged 2 and 3 on August 31st 2018 - that is, children born between September 1st 2014 and August 31st 2016, and children aged 2 to 17 with long-term health conditions. Friends and Family Test We are very pleased to have received excellent feedback in the September Friends and Family test, which you are invited to complete either via SMS after attending an appointment with us (if we have your mobile number registered), through feedback forms available in reception or via the survey available on our website. 95% of patients were either ‘extremely likely’ or ‘likely’ to recommend our services. Some comments include: ‘Quick efficient friendly and professional. A great advert for a good NHS’ ‘We came away feeling we had been well cared for and listened to over the phone and at the consultation. Many thanks.’ ‘The team are always helpful, polite and have

a friendly demeanour. The waiting room is comfortable and appointments timely.’ ‘My wife and I regard ourselves as very lucky to have such a fantastic Doctors practice. Caring, professional and friendly - always!’ ‘Receptionist very helpful and caring. Nurses and Doctor very kind, caring and thorough. Left the surgery feeling very reassured. Thank you.’ Thank you to all our patients who have taken the time to respond to our Family and Friends test. It is heartening to receive predominantly positive feedback which is greatly appreciated by the whole team. We would also be grateful if possible, if you could share your experiences on the NHS website at www.nhs.uk Open Surgery Feedback Over the Summer months we ran Open Surgeries on Mondays and Friday mornings in order to try and make the most appropriate use of all the clinicians available over the holiday period. We recently conducted a survey to gather patient feedback and experiences. We are pleased to report that 100% of respondents felt that the Open Surgeries improved access for an appointment, that the overall experience was either good or excellent, and would like to see the service offered again. We did advise patients that they could expect to wait up to an hour for the Open Surgery sessions; 64% of those surveyed were seen within 20 minutes, 25% between 21-40 minutes and 11% between 41-60 minutes with no one waiting longer than an hour. We frequently review our appointment system and how it’s working in order to provide the best service possible to patients; we will be taking this feedback on board when planning future services.
