Many thanks to those who attended and those who bought tickets and especially to the local businesses who paid for printing and gave all the prizes for which we are very grateful. PILLING COFFEE FEAST We are really looking forward to this year’s all new Coffee Feast on Sat 27th July. There will be a brand new marquee, lots of wonderful new ideas and plenty of opportunity for fun and games. The event begins with a Grand Parade starting at the New Community Field, going along Taylors Lane, School Lane and Smallwood Hey. (If you live along the route we would love you to join in the fun by decorating up your houses.) When the parade returns to the field, there will be a short service followed by the Crowning of Emily Donkin, the New Coffee Feast Queen for 2019. There are prizes for the best decorated floats and, this year, we are also having a fancy dress competition for all ages with a cash prize in each category.

STALMINE BOWLING CLUB Here we are - already in the second half of this year’s season! The weather, on the whole, has been kinder recently, and more like ‘proper bowling weather’! Thankfully the weather for Glenice Singleton’s President’s Day on Sun 7th July couldn’t have been better if we’d ordered it ourselves! The day was enjoyed by all who participated, either as players or spectators. As always the Jacob’s Join was excellent, after which a very close final was played between Frances Horridge and Terry Beasley. After a very good game Terry

There are 156 individual charities under their umbrella. Each branch has to raise its own funds to care for the animals. Our local branch has an average of 400 animals a year to care for and it can take a long while for them to be rehabilitated and re-housed. Whilst they have professional and fully trained staff they do rely on volunteer helpers and trustees to oversee things. After many years the Blackpool quarters were found to be unsafe, so the land was sold and with the help of some substantial legacies a brand new building was erected at Stalmine which is state of the art with all mod cons. Martyn supervises the 22 staff. There are 4 charity shops in the local area and they need all the money they can raise to run the Animal Centre. The Animal Centre is in need of old towels and newspapers. Local supermarkets collect tins of cat/dog food which are donated by members of the public. Martyn was given a vote of thanks by Sue Cardwell. The competition of a photo of my favourite pet was won by Brenda Jarratt with a picture of her adopted Guide Dog for the Blind, 2nd was Sharon Warne and 3rd Doe Edge. KNOTT END BABIES AND TODDLERS Toy Appeal - can you help? The Knott End Babies and Toddlers’ Group runs every Tuesday from 10:00am - 12 noon during term time. This is a lovely group which was established several years ago by Jo Critchley and continues to thrive thanks to a small but enthusiastic group of volunteers. It provides a much needed opportunity for children and their carers to play and socialise in a friendly setting. Sadly, austerity has meant that we have now lost all of the Over Wyre Children’s Centres. Raising young children is the hardest job in the world, as any parent will attest, and this group provides much needed friendship and support for carers and parents. Many of our toys are now in a poor state and are broken, or simply ‘well loved’, and we would like to renew them with some natural sensory toys. We particularly need good quality toys made from cloth, wood or natural materials. If you have any gently used natural toys at home which you no longer need we would greatly appreciate them, as well as any money donations towards providing the children with an enriching play environment.

As a teacher with over twenty years experience, I know how vital it is for young children to have as much experience of sensory play as possible. Sensory play supports a child’s cognitive growth; enhancing their thought process, understanding and reasoning. Natural toys support this best and are also kinder to our environment; they last much longer and can often be recycled at the end of their useful life. If you are able to help us please contact myself or Helen Millichamp. We would be so grateful for your support. Ruth Norbury helenmillichamp@btinternet.com ruthnorbury@gmail.com

HAMBLETON GALA 2019 Village Life at its Finest! Wow! This year’s Gala was bigger, and hotter, than ever before and what a fabulous day we all had. We would like to thank everyone who supported us, prior to and on the day, and all who attended. It was lovely to see so many people lining the streets of the procession route and then joining us on the Bob Williamson Park for the crowning of Queen Imogen Preston, aged 11. An afternoon of fantastic, talented entertainment followed, with a record turnout.

the main marquee for judging too. The U9s and U7s Invitational Football Tournaments provided lots of healthy, competitive fun for all those involved and those spectating! The local community, organisations and businesses have really supported us in putting on this year’s Gala and we really can’t thank you enough. It is very much appreciated and we couldn’t do it without you!

Hambleton WI decided to celebrate the 80 years since they started by joining this year’s procession in a decorated bus.

The tombola stall was generously supported by the staff and parents of Hambleton Primary Academy, the tea tent was down to the hard work of villagers and groups coming together. To everyone who helped us on the field and marshal the roads (especially Poulton Rotary) to help keep everyone safe - thank you!

We had so many entries for our ‘Red White and Blue’ competitions (both Gardens and Children’s Colouring), and the ‘Village Bake Off’ saw some very tasty cakes displayed in

We must also thank all the attending Gala Queens, all of who looked beautiful with their supporting retinues, and everyone that took part in the procession. We had some brilliant

Just thought I’d give an update on our activities. As you may know, we don’t meet at the centre during the summer. Instead our members are invited to paint out of doors at various venues.

If you have any feedback or ideas on how we can keep improving the Gala then please get in touch or if you are interested in joining our committee, come along to our AGM, to be held on Mon 9th Sept 7:30pm at Hambleton Village Hall. To date we’ve enjoyed sketching at Garstang, Scorton, St. Annes, Hambleton, Thornton, Blackpool and Preesall. This variety has opened up subjects for painting people, riversides, parkland, ponds, churches, boat yard activities and inevitably cafes. Everyone who attended enjoyed each day although the weather hasn’t been as good this year to date but there is still the opportunity in August to enjoy a few more outings. We start up again at St. Bernard’s Hall in Knott End on Tues 10th Sept when everyone will be welcome. More details will be in the September edition of Focus Magazine. Sandra Langhorne (01253) 813739

OWSAC thank three local bodies for supporting us again this year.

Over Wyre Social & Activity Club St Oswalds’ Parish Hall Thurs 22nd Aug 2:00pm - 4:00pm

Firstly we would like to thank the local Co-op Community Fund for choosing us to receive the money raised in the Co-op. This is the second time we have won and this time it is for a year. We would also like to say a big thank you to all the customers who use their Co-op cards to support us. Without them we would not be able to keep the Club going.

Thank You from OWSAC

Secondly, Moon’s Charitable Trust for donating £400 towards our birthday party this year. We have been running for two years now and we are going from strength to strength, with nearly 100 members. OWSAC (cont) £325 towards the Christmas Party for this year and we will match it. Last year, they donated money towards a Christmas Party and we provided the members with a lunch, a Christmas card and present and entertainment. We plan to do something similar this year. The majority of members were able to attend and enjoy the celebrations. The group provides a monthly meeting in St Oswald’s Parish Hall for folk who live in the community and wants some company and entertainment. We do get many members who have recently been bereaved and they find it helps to join in. Each month we either have a singsong or musical activity, a speaker or a creativity afternoon. At the last meeting we had a Tai Chi demonstration and many members joined in. Many thanks to our benefactors who help us keep this Group going and long may it last. Christine White - Secretary

HEALTHY JOINTS In my osteopathic work I encounter many patients with injured joints. These may be acute injuries such as a sprain all the way through to more long term problems such as osteoarthritis and joints damaged by autoimmune diseases. I often hear the term ‘wear and tear’ and ‘it must be my age’. If you read my words regularly you’ll see that I’m never that impressed with the age excuse. I’m not too impressed with wear and tear either.

highly mobile and unstable at the same time, hence shoulder injuries are relatively easy to sustain. Lining the end of the bone where the joint is we have smooth cartilage which enables friction free movement. Covering the joint is a bag like capsule called the synovium which produces synovial fluid to lubricate the joint. This fluid is also full of nutrients which feed the joint.

However, rather than worrying too much about why our joints may start to show problems let us focus more on maintaining good joint health as we get older.

Synovial fluid has a thixotrophic quality which means when we put pressure into our joint from movement it turns from a watery substance to a gel like goo which enables more effective shock absorbing.

Our joints are made of two bones that generally fit together due to their shape such as the ball and socket joint of the hip. Our shoulder is an exception as it has the ball but no proper socket, this means it is both

These simple qualities indicate the most effective way to keep a joint healthy. Keep it moving. Movement washes the nutrients from synovial fluid over the joint surfaces thus feeding and aiding repair of the cartilage and

28

HEALTHY JOINTS (cont) it also protects the joint by causing the fluid to thicken. Most arthritic change is actually caused by disuse, not wear and tear because sitting at desks and in front of the TV prevents the fluid from feeding your joint properly. Prolonged lack of use also causes muscles to shorten which begins to restrict freedom of movement. So remedy number one for any joint problem is pain free repetitive movement. Or, if there is no problem, prevent trouble by keeping active and moving every single day. Your body is a moving machine not a sitting machine. Try to move every joint of your body through its whole range of movement every day. Even small movements that get you nowhere but get a joint moving can help which is worth noting if you have some pain or inability to move as freely as you would like. In a two

month study of people with painful arthritic knees who walked for half an hour a day they found their pain levels reduced and mobility improved as well as seeing all kinds of other benefits to their blood sugar levels and mood. There are various supplements that can help your joints too from the ever reliable cod liver oil to glucosamine and chondroitin. Rosehip oil is good too. Choosing a supplement is very much a matter of personal choice, experience and budget of course – find what works for you. However, I cannot stress enough the profoundly powerful effects of movement which is far more potent than any drug you can take and brings side effects of more energy, a healthy heart and better sleep – what are you waiting for? Get moving folks! Nick Tofalos (01995) 602833

HAMBLETON URC There are a few organisations within our community we wish to say ‘thank you’ to this month for their wonderful commitment and generosity. Firstly, the Gala Committee, for putting on such a wonderful and superb Gala event. We were so honoured to be asked to be Judges. Also, congratulations to all the participants for such wonderful floats and costumes. The day was just perfect. Whilst voicing our appreciations, we would also like to include all those who supported us in our collection for UNICEF, who do a great role in helping children throughout the world; to those who filled their Christian Aid envelopes, this money helps to support families in poverty-stricken countries. Finally, thank you to those who gave generously in helping us support a local children’s charity, Brian House.

And not forgetting the Team behind this, the Green Book (Focus Magazine), but more importantly those who deliver it to our doorsteps each and every month. This service keeps us informed of the news and events occurring within our community and provides a life line for many. Thank you to all. As we are the church at the centre of our community, do remember that we are here for you as part of our ‘outreach’ programme. BEN WALLACE MP I don’t want to talk too soon but, the Lancashire weather seems to be picking up nicely. I am pleased to say I have been taking advantage of it whenever possible and traveling around the beautiful constituency of Wyre and Preston North. Of course affairs in Westminster are dominating the press and by the time this article goes out we will know the name of our new Prime Minister. Interesting times! As your local Member of Parliament it is extremely important that I know what is going on and what the challenges are in the constituency. This is achieved in many ways, firstly via my mail bag where often residents inform me of specific problems they encounter but, there is no substitute for getting out and about meeting people. That

32

is why I visit many organisations including the emergency services, the NHS, places of learning, charities, businesses and so on. Remember if you would like me to visit your organisation please contact my Office. My constituency days are varied and often busy. Recently I have hosted constituency surgeries, visited the Police, Lancashire County Council, a local nursery and other businesses. One business I visited was EnviroSystems UK Ltd, a family business based in Barton, Preston which produces a unique range of eco-friendly products for livestock farmers both in the UK and overseas. Renewable heat is utilised at its new drying facility, Foggs Farm, in Claughton to produce ‘EnviroBed’ the company’s livestock bedding made from paper waste which won a Queen’s

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) Award for Innovation in 2006. The company, established in 2001 by Liz Russell also manufactures biological inoculants for improving nutrient values of farm slurry and silage, as well as a range of eco-friendly hoof care products, aiding livestock wellbeing. It was an extremely interesting visit and I would like to thank Liz and her team for making me welcome and showing me around. Driving around the local area, there continues to be a great deal of work going on with regards to repairing local roads. I do keep in touch with local County Councillors about this issue and I am hearing that work is being carried out, to not only fix faults but to ensure that larger areas are patched and the work lasts. This is a great improvement on small pothole patching, which in my view was not cost effective. THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Over Wyre Branch Well that was an exciting end to the editorial month! In July 11 of the Branch members and their wives/ partners, a total of 15, went to Ryecroft Hall for a lunch and afternoon’s entertainment. It was a superb afternoon. Good food, good natter, good entertainment and the Chairman won two bottles of wine in the free bingo. This was followed a good Branch meeting when discussions were held with regard to future events, social and civic, including Remembrance week-end and a more robust Armed Forces Day event for 2020. We also welcomed a new member, Peter, who has just moved to the area so branch numbers are increasing. However we still

We have tried holding evening meetings every other month to cater for those who are employed during the day but, unfortunately, it wasn’t very successful but we would be willing to try again if we could find anyone interested. The Branch was represented at the Preesall and Knott End Gala with the Information Gazebo and whilst some interest was shown and £53.74 made for the Over Wyre Poppy Appeal which now stands at £9,096.94. This is a fantastic amount donated by the members of our great community and there are still two months to go. Thanks must go to Tom Reilly and Jackie for manning the stand as well as to Eric who decorated his vehicle in RBL bunting and gained 3rd prize in the category.

We must also congratulate our Branch President, Ray, who has been shortlisted for a Greater Manchester and Lancashire Area award in the Individual Fund-Raiser category. The winner etc will be chosen at the Awards Evening on Thurs 5th Sept in the Village Hotel, Bury. Good Luck, Ray, You deserve recognition for all that you do. Everyone had a good natter and some valuable information was imparted to others by those who have gone through similar experiences. I was very pleased to receive information regarding how to go about getting into the system to have an Audiology assessment as I appear to have progressed from suffering with tinnitus to being nearly deaf – and that’s not just when someone says it is your round. I now have such an appointment for assessment booked. Four of the M&G Group attended a meeting in Wyre Borough Council offices to discuss what action had been taken since Wyre Borough Council last signed their Covenant. The way ahead was also discussed on how best to promote the existence of the Armed Forces Covenant, what it meant and what the Council’s responsibilities were towards those who are or have served in the Armed Forces. NORTH FYLDE PHOTOGRAPHIC SOC

At recent M&G meetings we have had NHS representatives attend to hold health checks. Others have brought in family and personal military memorabilia.

North Fylde Photographic Society has several exhibitions taking place during the summer season. Please see www.northfylde-ps. co.uk for details

It is hoped that at our future meetings we can have representatives from other organisations who have a specific interest in those who are serving or those who have served in the Armed Forces to inform us about the services they have to offer and how they may be able to help. GARSTANG AND DISTRICT LIONS Donations

Events

A group of students are completing a number of events in aid of the Marie Curie charity and it was agreed to sponsor them for £100.

In June, members enjoyed an excellent bowls evening and hot pot supper in the summer sunshine at the Patton Arms. The individual winners were David Carlyle and Jen Hodgson.

A donation of £250 will go to Achieve, Change and Engagement (A.C.E) who assisted us at the recent Gt Eccleston Show and had given a previous presentation to the club about their work with disaffected and disengaged young people. The Lions Club are still collecting new cosmetics, new toiletry items, new toys or new clothing items for babies, small children or ladies for Fylde Women’s Aid. If you can help then please bring them to the Resources Centre (the old Liberal Club) on Bridge Street.

The car parking duties at the Gt. Eccleston Show proved to be very busy over the two fine days but our members coped well as always with valued assistance from wives/ partners, the North West Children’s Society and representatives from A.C.E. Car parking events coming up are the Garstang Show on Sat 3rd Aug and the Lancashire Country and Game Fair on Sat 7th and Sun 8th Sept. If you want to join our lively club visit www. garstanglions.co.uk or come along to one of our meetings on the third Tuesday of the month in the Royal Oak starting at 8:00pm. Chris Wilkinson

ST JOHN’S CHURCH PILLING Churchyard Appeal A Gift Day will be held on Sun 3rd Sept. This will be specifically to raise money for a new ride-on mower for the Churchyard, the cost of which is approximately £3000. To enable the churchyard volunteers to make a much better job the mower suggested is a Husqvama R 213c, which is efficient, easy to manoeuvre in confined spaces and mulches, giving a cleaner, closer cut. Envelopes for donations are available at the back of the Church. If you wish to make an earlier donation please give to the Church Wardens or Elizabeth Cookson (01253) 790537. Please pass on this information to other people who may be interested in this appeal. All donations will be gratefully received. I have suggested to Elizabeth Cookson that as my wife Lilian and I have family graves in Pilling Churchyard there must be a large number of people who read Focus each month who also have loved ones there and would be willing, as we are, to make a contribution to the Church to help the wonderful people that mow the grass and keep the graveyard tidy - it is a labour of love. They deserve all the support we can give them.

RSPCA Special Appeals Patrick Well what can we say about Patrick? He’s such a big character who has made an impression on the staff. He was originally picked up as a stray and we’ve found him to be very inquisitive. He loves to investigate or play with whatever catches his eye so he needs a home where he has plenty to do.

but it really must be on his terms. As he is a semi-long haired cat, he will require regular grooming which he seems to enjoy. On arrival he was suffering from severe cat flu but after treatment he has recovered. However, Patrick may now be a cat flu carrier so he is to be rehomed as an only cat. He’ll make someone a loyal companion to someone who is experienced with cats. Zippy Zippy arrived at the Centre in a very poorly condition but with the correct diet and regular meals he is gaining weight day by day.

He comes across as quite a confident cat who has bundles of energy but he can still be a little worried in new surroundings so plenty of reassurance is needed. Around familiar people he can be extremely affectionate

RSPCA (cont) unsettled in his new surroundings. Zippy will need a supportive and patient owner who will help him settle at home in his own time by giving him plenty of reassurance. He is a friendly boy who loves attention and enjoys being stroked. He is very active but loves to relax in the sun! He enjoys his food and will climb on your knee and have cuddles but due to his energetic nature doesn’t sit still for long. We imagine he will want to go outside to explore his surroundings once he is settled therefore living away from a busy main road is vital. Like all cats settling into a new home he must be kept inside for at least six weeks Lenny Lenny was abandoned by his previous owner so we have no information about him. It’s clear that he is socialised with other cats but has had very little interaction with people so he is very scared. We have seen some improvements in his behaviour as he is enjoying his indoor comforts of a warm bed, sunbathing in the sun and a belly full of food but Lenny really needs to live a life outdoors where he can come and go as he pleases. He is still quite skittish and panics when people go near him so his ideal home would be somewhere rural as sadly Lenny is unsuitable to be rehomed in a normal domestic setting. We are looking for a farm, stables or small holding where he can live happily. He’s been blood tested, neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and had an initial flea and worm treatment. A new owner would need to be patient and provide Lenny with a warm

Sea Bank House

A special home for special people Sea Bank House is a residential home for elderly people who are unable to live independently in their own homes. Or philosophy of care is based on the belief that it is the right of any resident in the home to be respected as an individual, and that everyone has the right to be allowed to live as full and active a life as both their mental and physical condition allows. We endeavour to provide an environment which is not only comfortable and homely, but gives the warmth and understanding normally associated with family care but supported by specialist equipment and well trained care sta. Needs are met maintaining personal dignity, privacy and encouraging independence where possible. Activities, passive and active are encouraged throughout the day by trained care sta under the guidance of the Home Manager. Each care plan takes into consideration the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs, in order to create a care plan that is relevant to individuals. Recognising, nurturing and encouraging the residents remaining skills and ability to communicate is or paramount importance to the quality of care given at Sea Bank House.

WHY HEARING AIDS STOP WORKING Nine times out of 10 hearing aids do not work because of a wax build-up. Other reasons why hearing aids sometimes don’t work include a dead battery, a blocked microphone, faulty electronics or a change in your hearing.

We are holding our annual treasure walk on the New Community Field on Sat 14th Sept at 2:00pm. Enjoy a walk along the footpaths of Pilling and search for the decorated walking boots and wellies. The theme for this year’s event is ‘Take a Walk on the Wild Side’ celebrating our year for wildflowers on the New Community Field. This year there will be a shorter walk for younger children who want to stay on the field. Delicious refreshments available or bring a picnic. Funds raised will go towards the New Community Hall. We hope to see you there.

If you have a whistling hearing aid it is usually a sure sign of having too much wax in your ears.

Sudden changes to your hearing require an urgent visit to your doctor.

CENTRAL HEATING & PLUMBING

Tips for Maintaining your Hearing Aid •

Wipe the ear piece of your hearing aid down every night

In the morning use a brush to remove any wax accumulation on the earmold or rubber dome that goes in the ear canal

Replace the speaker tube if kinked or for private hearing aids with a filter check them regularly and replace them at least monthly

Hearing aids are electronic and so don’t like moisture. Store you hearing aid in a dry place or use a hearing aid dry box

Get your ears checked and cleared if they feel blocked or you have wax on the end the hearing aid mould or dome

I’ve recently had the pleasure of visiting Fleetwood’s Charity Primary School in Preesall to meet the pupils and head teacher John Belshire. It’s a lovely school and the staff do an amazing job against the backdrop of budgets being slashed and declining teacher numbers. I also really enjoyed the Knott End and Preesall Gala this year. We were blessed with fantastic weather. Congratulations to the Preesall Rainbows who won the best float competition and to Kepplegate Nursing Home for winning first prize in the scarecrow competition! I hope the new Gala Queen Emily and her retinue have a fun and exciting year ahead! One of the biggest issues I’m concerned about at the moment is the number of distressed constituents with disabilities contacting me to say they’ve had their Personal Independence Payments (PIP) taken away from them with little warning. PIP is worth up to £145.35 a week and is designed to help towards the additional costs of a disability or long-term illness, such as help getting dressed, cooking meals or getting around. PIP claimants often face controversial assessments, conducted by private companies on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). I’ve discovered that disabled people in our

CAT SMITH MP (cont) constituency are waiting more than a year to have their Personal Independence Payment appeals heard - leaving them out of pocket and unable to buy in vital services. More than 70 percent of all PIP refusals are overturned on appeal. However, some of the most vulnerable and needy in Over Wyre are having to wait more than 12 months for their appeal to be heard. Twelve months without help to get dressed, cook a meal or leave the house. This is completely unacceptable. Government research suggests that 37% of people do not appeal the DWP’s decision because ‘the process would be too stressful’ while 20% said they were ‘too unwell’ to challenge it. Government figures show from the point of registration to the point of a decision being made takes 15 weeks. If the claim is rejected then the claimant has to request mandatory reconsideration. This takes a further five weeks. If this is rejected, then the claim goes to appeal which is taking a further 52 weeks. In all it can take 18 months to be awarded welfare support to help a person with a disability live a more independent life.

keep an eye on my website for further news. Are you eligible for Pension Credit and if so, are you claiming it? It’s been discovered that millions in pension support is going unclaimed every year. Pension Credit makes a major difference to the lives of older people, enabling them to afford the very basics and to live with more independence and dignity. Here in the Lancaster and Fleetwood constituency it’s estimated that 1,852 older people are missing out on a combined £4,591,000 every year. The most recent Government figures show that up to 1.3 million households entitled to this benefit are not receiving it, with a value of up to £3.5 billion. Almost 2 million older people aged 65 and over are living in poverty in the UK. The recent rise in pensioner poverty has been

I’ve once again written to the DWP demanding a review of the system. It’s not fair that people with disabilities are missing out on the advantages the rest of us enjoy. Every week I’m contacted by distressed and desperate people who have become prisoners in their own homes and see months of misery ahead. This has to change. Staying with health, a significant number of constituents have contacted me to say they are having difficulties getting hold of their prescriptions in Knott End. I have contacted the head office of Lloyds Pharmacy and I’m waiting to hear back on the findings of an investigation they are conducting into these difficulties. I’ll report back to you when I have an update. Please

CAT SMITH MP (cont) primarily amongst those who rent. According to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation poverty among pensioners in the private rented sector is now 36% (up from 27% in 2007/08). For social renters, poverty has risen from 20% to 31% since 2012/13. For the poorest pensioners in the UK, the weekly cost for those paying off a mortgage was £50 in 2016/17, £81 for those privately renting and £90 for those in social rented homes. It’s really important to check if you are eligible for Pension Credit because if you are, you are often eligible for other benefits too. These can include free NHS dental treatment and sight tests, help with the cost of glasses and contact lenses, help with travel costs to hospital, full Housing Benefit if you rent, reduced Council Tax, Cold Weather Payments and a Warm Home discount. Obviously this can make a huge difference to quality of life.

There are two types of Pension Credit: Guarantee Credit and Savings Credit. Guarantee Credit tops up a claimant’s weekly income to £167.25 for a single person and £255.25 for a couple (married, in a civil partnership or co-habiting). Savings Credit can give claimants up to £13.73 a week for a single person or up to £15.35 a week for a couple (married, in a civil partnership or co-habiting). The exact amount depends on income and savings. To make a claim for Pension Credit, call the claim line on 0800 991 234. The students involved built and programmed their very own robot to work around a mapped course and eventually won the Robo Competition at Blackpool and Fylde College. ST AIDAN’S NEWS (cont) Year 6 Transition Day last week was a hit! We invited all our future Year 7 pupils for a taster day, in which they got to experience five high school lessons and meet their new forms. It was great to see the rest of the school be so accommodating and kind to their new peers. We can’t wait for them to join the Saint Aidan’s family in September! On the topic of Primary Schools, we have had multiple Year 5 taster days this month, where schools from all over the Fylde Coast have also been in and experienced a day at Saint Aidan’s. We have had the privilege of taking them pond dipping, on prayer walks and also through many different subjects such as: Maths, English, Languages and Technology. We hope that they all had a wonderful experience. It’s certainly one of our favourite times of the year. Prom was, as always, a spectacular affair. This was held at The Village Hotel, Blackpool

and was a brilliant evening. All of our former Year 11 pupils looked stunning and we were so pleased to see everyone enjoying the night - even if we did see some strange dance moves! Finally, we are very proud to announce that seven of our students, who are Fire Cadets, are walking 20 miles this summer for the Fire Fighter’s charity. They will be walking to all the fire stations on the Fylde Coast! The seven students are; Jack Hoyle, Emma Gilmartin, Emily Checkley, Jack Waller, Noelia BradleyHall, Charlie Weeden and Elizabeth Davis. What a selfless act. I can’t wait to get back to you next month with details on our two trips and other exciting tales! Until then, keep an eye on our twitter page @SaintAidansCEHS for any updates. Our Aims

Let’s start by sending a big Thank you to Garstang and District for helping us raise nearly £160 at our Bric-a-Brac stall in June. This is a marvellous start towards our aim of purchasing a Tuk Tuk for Think Pink for Sri Lanka - in fact it’s about 5% of the purchase price - well done everyone! (to find out more visit www.rosie-may.com/work-sri-lanka). Scarecrow Festival And whilst giving thanks to Garstang, what an achievement with the Scarecrow Festival. It was fantastic! August is a month that contains many Heroes and Villains and it was on August 1st 1944 that Anne Frank penned her last entry into her diary ‘I keep on trying to find a way of becoming what I would like to be, and what I could be if....there weren’t any other people living in the world’. As Soroptimists, we like people and we’re certainly glad that there are plenty of them living in the world but, how much nicer and fairer could the world be if everyone found a way to be what they could be - educated, empowered and enabled? This amazing amount will fund the screening of 22 young hearts – one for each year of Matthew’s life what a lovely tribute. Thank you. July found us at the fantastic 2nd Garstang Scarecrow Festival. What a fabulous community event it was and blessed by near perfect weather too. Thank you to all who supported our stand, helping to raise £372.75. We hope you all enjoyed taking part in the Dalmatian activities - the Cruella DeVil display looked great with all your puppies. We had a lovely surprise too thanks to the gent who, after reading about our scarecrow in the last Focus, added to the fun by visiting the stand dressed as a Dalmatian – great photo opportunities for all!

CARTER’S NEWS As this edition is published, we will be getting school ready for the new school year. As with any transition, there are lots of things to do including the installation of new screens in each classroom – we spent a while choosing but decide on these www.bvstouchscreens. com/bvs-ecotouch-65-inch-eta651/. They will take our classrooms to a whole new level and support and stimulate learning and teaching. We are very fortunate to be supported by an excellent school community and through the ‘Friends of Carter’s’ we have had two of these screens donated saving the school £4000! At the recent summer fair, which was really well attended, over £1380 was raised. We are extremely grateful to all the helpers, stallholders, donators of prizes and families and friends who shared in the fun – a grand night was had by all! Also present, offering their support and help for our school, was a group of staff members

from our local Co-op stores. We are always grateful for their support, with our children providing decorations for their window display in this year’s gala. We are one of the local causes for members to support. If you are a member of the Co-op please consider going online and pledge your support for a local cause and we are in there. So far we are nearing £1000 but are looking to raise more to put a new track around our field to increase its use in the less dry months! www.coop.co.uk/local-causes The new school year will bring with it some new faces to both the staffroom and the classroom. We have a 29 super keen four-year olds who are already waking up and putting their uniform on in readiness, joining us along with a couple of children joining further up the school. Mrs Callery is relinquishing some of her hours and we are welcoming Mrs Tomes who will cover lessons

CARTER’S NEWS (cont) on Wednesdays for the year. We look forward to working with all of our families old and new and welcome everyone to the Carter’s family. No sooner do we get ready for the current crop of Reception children than we start preparing the way for families to make the onerous decision of choosing which school is best for their three-year-old! Our Annual Open Day takes place on Tues 1st Oct with tours and talks. Posters will be up and around the area and all are welcome to come and see us in action. The Carter’s family also welcomes volunteers into school on a regular and recurring basis. We have a number of people who regularly contribute to children’s learning and development across the whole school. If you would like to volunteer or would just like to see if volunteering might be for you, please do get in touch and come in and have a chat. I hope that you all enjoy the summer - and the weather that we have been promised – and we look forward to seeing everyone in school on Tues 3rd Sept when the new school year begins.

We are very mindful of period poverty within our district and to that end, we collect sanitary products for girls who would otherwise have their education disrupted. STALMINE PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Plants Plea More volunteers are being sought to help keep Stalmine’s plant displays blooming. The Parish Council’s Plantsman is working hard to ensure the planters dotted around the village get enough water, but help from residents would be very welcome. Councillors, the clerk and some volunteers are already doing their bit, but the dry weather is making the task more difficult. Planting arrangements will be reviewed at the end of the summer season as without help from the community the number of displays will need to be reduced. All offers of help will be gratefully received. Please contact the clerk on the number below if you are able to help. Town Councillors made the request after becoming aware that parking issues there had escalated with the development of the nursing home thought likely to bring more difficulties. On a positive note the Parish Council has recently been awarded £10,000 towards some adult fitness equipment on the park, If you have any ideas on what type of equipment you would like to see please contact me. Next Meeting The next Ordinary Parish Council meetings will be held on Tues 6th Aug and Tues 3rd Sept at Hambleton Village Hall, Church Lane starting at 7:30pm. Members of the public are always welcome and encouraged to attend. Hambleton In Bloom Help is still needed in keeping the floral displays around the village watered and weeded. We are looking for groups or individuals that would be prepared to occasionally weed and/ or water areas around the village. Many hands make light work so any donation of time, however small, would be appreciated Again please contact me. Yvonne Walton 07703 773 785 Clerk to Hambleton Parish Council hambletonpc@yahoo.co.uk
