PILLING COMMUNITY FUN RUN
It didn’t seem to matter whether you were strolling, pushing a buggy or using a wheelchair to get around the course, everyone seemed to be having a great time. It was a wonderful community day and was enjoyed by all who took part.
Pilling Community Hall held its first Fun Run to celebrate the opening of the Trim Trail on the New Community Field on Taylor’s Lane.
Several families stayed on to picnic, making the most of the beautiful weather and superb refreshments.
The afternoon began with a warm up for athletes, young and old, led by Sam Green. He then cut the ribbon to open the Trim Trail and the afternoon of running began.
Our thanks go to Sam Green, for opening the Trim Trail, all the helpers who gave raffle prizes and refreshments and anyone who helped to make the day such a success.

IN BLOOM Knott End & Preesall As I write this we are less than a week away from the longest day which means that the beds and tubs are all planted up for this year. The main jobs now are watering and deadheading. If there is a tub near to your house which you would be prepared to water please let one of the team know or phone Yvonne or myself. Your help will be much appreciated. Our new project for this year was to improve the area at the front of Knott End Library. This is not an easy area to plant as it is very shady, very wet in winter and can be very dry in summer. We’ve concentrated on the shady, damp aspect of the garden, planting it with ferns and other shade loving plants. If we do have a dry summer this could be a demanding year for watering! Anyone interested in joining the In Bloom team please contact myself or Yvonne McCann (01253) 811364. Joyce Wilson (01253) 813519

PILLING BAND The band had a busy June and things are still quite hectic in July although we are hoping the sunshine comes back as we got very wet at Fleetwood Gala. We had a first for Pilling Band in June. You may recall me appealing for someone to play the Bass Drum for the band on march jobs - well we are still looking but at Calder Vale Gala our 1st horn player Keri Waterhouse stepped up to the mark and offered to bang the drum instead of playing. This was the first time in the band’s history (as far as we know) that a female has played the bass drum. Keri did a fantastic job and kept us all in step so thank you to Keri. July sees the band attending Eagland Hill Coffee Feast, Preesall Gala, Pilling Coffee Feast and Songs of Praises at Whitechapel and Shireshead. Details of these events can be found on our new website at www.pillingband.com On Sun 8th July the band will be playing in Happy Mount Park again. This is a free concert and I know I spotted some local faces last time we were there so it would be good to see some more this month. The band start playing at 2:30pm so bring your deck chairs, buy an ice cream and enjoy the afternoon’s entertainment. LORD WINMARLEIGH The Little Known Story of a Big Man
both Lancashire and his country.
To celebrate the 140th anniversary of the conscretation of St Luke’s Church, Winmarleigh, in 2016 several parishioners undertook some research, partly to learn about and partly to publicise it’s history.
The researchers made contact with local historian Paul Smith, a move which resulted in an expansion of knowledge and material about Lord Winmarleigh, whose obituary stated: ‘There passed away today a gentleman of years and honour, one who in his long and useful career left, it may be truly said, a footprint on the sands of time. For two generations he was one of the most familiar of Lancashire men.’
They discovered that St Luke’s, a Grade II listed building, was built by Lancaster architects Paley and Austin with internal decorations by Shrigley and Hunt which include rare stencilling and reredos and a Willis organ amongst other features. But the research into the buildings set them on the path to the discovery of a significantly bigger (though little known) story of an exceptional Lancashire man - John Wilson Patten (Lord Winmarleigh), businessman, Member of Parliament and soldier who was actively involved in civic and charitable work and who made a considerable contribution to
Sadly the ‘sands of time’ have washed away those footprints. A talk on the life of Lord Winmarleigh was recently given by Mr Smith to Garstang Historical Society. Some of the church members held a display of items connected to the peer in connection with the talk. Following the talk it was decided another opportunity would be organised to present more about the life and times of Lord Winmarleigh, his life, what he did for Lancashire, his country and for the village of Winmarleigh, whose name he took for his title when he was ennobled and where he chose to spend the later years of his life. An invitation is therefore extended by St Luke’s PCC to anyone who would like to visit the church on the afternoon of Wed 18th July at 2:00pm to build on the scene set by Paul Smith at his lecture. The invitation is open to all, not just those who attended the Historical Society lecture. There is no fee. For further information please contact Brenda Bodie (01524) 791455, Val Whitaker (01524) 791440 or Irene Connick (01524) 792037. Anthony Coppin

NSAIDS Pain killing drugs or are they just killing? Hands up…who has taken an antiinflammatory drug in the last few days? Many of us pop these over-the-counter pills whenever we get an ache or pain. The commonest group of drugs we use are the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, diclofenac or naproxen. It is the norm to take this medication so why wouldn’t you and of course it is a first line of defence suggested by many GPs. They are also advertised on TV as helping to kill pain fast and helping you to get better quicker. I get particularly annoyed at these kind of claims because if one has any basic understanding of how our body works and heals it is quite apparent that stopping acute inflammation with a drug and, therefore, healing quicker is a physical impossibility.
20
Why is this the case? It is quite simple really. Acute inflammation is your body’s response to an injury so that it can heal you. That’s right, it heals you. Inflammation rushes chemicals to the injured part to eat up damage and then rebuild it. At the same time it causes swelling to immobilise the area to prevent more damage and creates pain to stop you causing more harm. Acute inflammation from an injury actually FIXES you! It is not a problem that must be suppressed with a drug – we actually want inflammation so we can get better. This is one of the reasons people end up with long term problems. At the first sign of pain they take one of these drugs. This stops the healing (yes it may help your pain briefly) and, therefore, leaves you with a recurring injury because it was never allowed to heal properly in the first place.
Are you using a product or service from an advertiser?
NSAIDS (cont) I have to pick up the pieces of wrecked joints from years of suppressing problems with these drugs – they are a slippery slope to more trouble I’m afraid. Now, if you find that simple logic inconvenient and want to keep popping these pills to keep you going please be aware that between 800 and 3000 (estimates vary) people a year die from internal bleeding of the gut caused by NSAIDs in the UK alone. If osteopaths killed that many people a year we would be banned from practice. If a car manufacturer made a car that caused so many deaths you would not be buying that vehicle. In addition, taking NSAIDs for between one and seven days increases your chances of having a heart attack by approximately 50%! dead? I wonder…had they taken an NSAID recently for an ache? I will not take this medication and if I have a pain I find a way of fixing it through my own movement, hands on work from skilled therapists such as osteopaths (we all have our own favourites but my colleagues are excellent), good nutrition, pilates (a wonderful exercise regime to prevent problems) and natural remedies such as arnica, curcumin and these days, the wonderful cannabinoids we can get from CBD oil. I avoid suppressing my body’s healing response and am always aware of the law of physics – for every action there is a reaction. In the case of our body, if you suppress the acute healing response you will get a chronic problem down the line. Nick Tofalos

LEARN TO SQUARE DANCE Introductory Hoe Down Sat 7th July 7:30pm The Centre, Halton The Lune Valley Ocean Wavers American Square Dance Club are hosting a Fun and Friendly Hoe Down on Sat 7th July at The Centre, Halton, LA2 6NB, near Junction 34 of the M6. Dancing is from 7:30pm – 10:00pm. Entrance is £5 with light refreshments included and is called by our registered caller Trevor Day. A Hoe Down is a very simplified version of square dancing, so that everyone, whether you have danced before or not, will be dancing straight away. Everyone over the age of 14yrs is welcome. You do not need a partner to attend and there is no difficult footwork to learn as all the moves are walked in time to music. You do need to know your right from your left though!
All dances start in sets of eight, that’s four couples in a square. The caller will teach you some easy square dance moves to get you started, then he will call them to music, making up a dance. As you learn more moves, the dances becomes more interesting. You will be surprised how many moves you will have learned, almost without thinking, on the night of the Hoe Down. You will also discover that however many left feet you thought you had, you can dance. A Hoe Down is a very relaxed and fun way to dip your toe into the world of Square Dancing. Lune Valley Ocean Wavers Club recruits new dancers every two years, allowing our previously recruited dancers time to hone their newly learned skill. Our club is the only Square Dance Club in the area who will have Beginners classes this year. We have Beginners and Mainstream on Mondays at Halton and the next level, Plus,

KNOTT END & PREESALL GALA It’s nearly here! The Knott End and Preesall Gala Day this year is being held on Sat 14th July and the theme is ‘Disney’. Preparations are already well underway with schools working on football, netball and the painting competition. The Scarecrow Competition is being judged the week beginning Sat 7th July so keep a look out for your favourites. We’ll be judging the shop windows on the morning of Gala day. Anyone in the procession needs to meet on the Esplanade no later than 12:15pm for judging. If you are on a float, please drive down Hackensall Road and then Quail Holme and we’ll assign you a rough place in the procession. The procession will leave at 1:00pm and will
last until approximately 3:00pm. The roads along the route will be closed accordingly. On the field we’ll be crowning the new Queen as well as watching music, dancing and Tai Chi before the football final. There are lots of local charities and others with stalls on the field this year - it’s a real community hub, so do have a look around to see what others in the community are working on. Don’t forget that we have live music too with local bands ‘The Sound’ and ‘The Coustics’ coming on after the football until 9:30pm. Keep your fingers crossed for nice weather and start collecting those pennies! For more information contact Mark 07710 624 622. Claire Quaid

ST AIDAN’S NEWS June has been an incredibly important and busy month with the second half of the GCSE examinations taking place. Our Class of 2018 can now breathe a sigh of relief, having completed those crucial examinations. They have enjoyed saying ‘Goodbye’ with their Leavers’ Assembly and Prom at the Village Hotel in Blackpool and now await their Results Day in August. I wish them all success, as I do for students across the Fylde Coast.

Lots of other exciting things have also been happening. Our Year 10 (now new Year 11) students embarked upon a week of Work Experience, giving them a taste of what ‘9 to 5’ feels like in the real world. Also, our intrepid Duke of Edinburgh Award students completed their gruelling weekend away on one of the hottest weekends of the year. And we were delighted to welcome our local Member of Parliament, Cat Smith, to present awards and certificates at our Year 7 Presentation Evening as they completed their first year at Saint Aidan’s. We have also tasted success in a variety of competitions over the last month. Our wonderful athletes have continued their excellent form from the indoor season by taking their talent outside. Our Year 8 Girls are Fylde & Wyre Combined Champions whilst our Junior Boys went into the A Final, making them one of the 11 best schools in the North-West of England – both fantastic achievements! Our Robotics Team had a great time at the Blackpool Robotics Challenge, coming in third place and winning £500 whilst Year 11 student, Millie Hey, continued our rich history of success in the Young Physicist competition, sponsored by the Ogden Trust, by triumphing in June. Another success was that of our Dance Team. Fresh from their performance in the Fylde and Wyre Championships, they were

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES
Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?
Dr Finlay Sutton
If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.
Brenda’s Testimonial
Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

FLEETWOOD FLIERS (cont) We came down to earth this Sunday only finishing third in the Lancashire Cup at Poolfoot, played in extremely warm conditions, which helped another successful competition run by our hard working committee. It doesn’t matter what skills you possess, we accommodate all abilities in our Wednesday sessions. You can just turn up to this event and enjoy the fun with the rest of the players. Our Monday and Friday sessions are prebookable through our website. These games are a little faster, not actual walking but again not sprinting. The Monday session is 7:00pm - 8:00pm played in the cages at Poolfoot. Wednesday is 12:30pm - 2:00pm and Friday
5:00pm - 6:00pm on the open pitches, as is the session on Wednesday. There is also a Ladies only session for the Over Thirties on Tuesdays 7:00pm - 8:00pm. This is also in the cages at Poolfoot. LOVING BOOKS Growing an Avid Reader Ok, Let’s be 100% honest here. Reading every night with your children is not easy. Even the most perfect among us must surely, at times, have experienced that sense of dread when the Velcro on the reading bag begins to rip. We’ve smiled dutifully, suppressed the urge to scream and tried to ignore the rising panic after glancing at the housework and thinking about the chores to complete. We’ve tried not to think about the hockey, swimming and brownies to attend. We blank out the fact that there might be other children all simultaneously reaching into their bags for their turn. It’s a brave parent who gives an extra second of time to one sibling over another. Even before they can use a stop watch, they know
who gets longer with daddy or mummy. They know you love one more than the other and it’s just not fair. It was all so exciting when Number One child finally got a book with words. Real words like, at and sat and pin and mat. Wow! What a day. Roll forward another two years and the books take longer, and time seems shorter. Some days it’s easy and you feel like the best parent on the planet but other days you’re just plain tired. The meeting at work might be preying on your mind and/or the book that thrills your child is quite frankly, rather tedious. Your eyes might start to close, or you just might surreptitiously check for head lice. I’m a teacher and mother of three and can identify with all of the above but I’ve also read the evidence and seen the impact of home support. It’s overwhelming. It just isn’t easy and at school we get it, we really do. Teachers are in awe of all that parents do - many of them are doing the same themselves. Maybe a few facts might just make it easier to forget about the other demands on our time and help us remember that reading with our children is actually the best gift we can give them. We all know that stories strengthen parentchild bonds but reading together is actually boosting your child’s brain development. Neural research shows that when parents and caregivers interact verbally with children—which includes reading to them— kids learn a great deal more than we ever thought possible. These gains range from improved logic skills to lower stress levels. But perhaps the most profound benefit discovered in recent years is the way bedtime stories can re-wire children’s brains to quicken their mastery of language.

LOVING BOOKS (cont) The more you read to your children, the more knowledge they absorb, and knowledge is important in all aspects of life. While you may speak with your children every day, it is often the same language repeated over again. Reading books ensures that your child is exposed to vocabulary on different topics, which means they hear words or phrases which they may not hear otherwise in their day to day lives. The more words they know, the better.
about important life skills such as sharing, being kind, and diversity. One of the great benefits of reading with children is feeding a developing imagination. When we become absorbed in a book we imagine what the characters are doing. It becomes real. Watching the excitement on a child’s face as they fall into a book is a profound experience.
Reading to your children leads to questions about the book. It gives you a chance to speak about what is happening and use this as a learning experience. You are creating an active life long learner.
When a child can put themself into the story it helps them to develop empathy. They identify with characters, and they feel what they are feeling. Children begin to understand and relate to emotions. It helps them deal with the challenges that life will inevitably throw at them.
Providing your child with different types of books on different topics, gives them a wide range of information for them to learn. There are also different books to help teach children
Remember you are doing an incredible job and there is nothing more important than spending special time with your children. One day your houses will be quieter and your lives

LIFE AT CARTERS
will be calmer but you will never regain those special times when you held your children close and opened their minds to words and wonder.
This week, we have welcomed our new families into school to have their first look at where their little darlings will be spending their days from September. We will have 28 four year olds beginning their school life with us and we are really looking forward to working with them all over the next 7 years.
“Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.” - Emilie Buchwald - Author. Gruffalo Hunt The Gruffalo is a favourite story that has inspired millions of young readers. Why not bring your little ones to hear the story and see if you can find the Gruffalo in our woods at Pilling St John’s? He is a really gentle Gruffalo and is visiting our school on Thurs 12th July between 4:00pm and 5:30pm. It’s a free event and we would love to meet you. There will be cakes, stories and crafts to enjoy. Catherine Wigley - Headteacher Pilling St John’s CE Primary School (01253) 790282
Each year, we ask our current Y4 children (8/9 year olds) to begin their role as buddies to our new starters. One of their first encounters will be the opportunity to have a forest school session at Huckleberry’s Nursery. There’s nothing like getting messy and muddy together for breaking down barriers and getting to know someone. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful team of staff here who do go above and beyond for our children. They have been planning a BIG project together for this half term all based around the wonderful story,

‘The Sea Swallow’ by Gareth Thompson and Hannah Megee. One Monday morning a mysterious basket was delivered to school with a note for ‘The Headmaster’. This parcel was left on the chair in the story circle and the children found it at breaktime. There was much excitement with the children trying to work out who had sent it, what was in it and what had happened. We opened up the package in assembly in the afternoon and the only word to describe this is ‘WOW!’. As such, we are all going to try to detect who sent the parcel and why. ‘The Sea Swallow’ is a magical tale of adventure, heroism and love set in an imaginary area based on the Fylde and Wyre coast. The whole school will be studying this tale this term. All the children will visit various locations in the local area and share their discoveries with everyone. We will
then complete our exploration with a whole school trip to the beach looking at plastics and pollution and how we can all make a difference. THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Over Wyre Branch Both the Branch Chairman and Secretary have been busy over the past few weeks and it’s looking like that will continue. We attended the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire’s Cadet Poppy Appeal Awards evening in April, and in May we attended the Coastal Group of Branches meeting, the Lancashire County Committee meeting, the Legion’s National Conference in Belfast from 17th to 21st May and the Legion’s Welfare Break Centre Amenity Fund meeting on 26th May. We have been getting to grips with the new Data Protection Act (GDPR 18) requesting our members to complete the Consent Forms.
The Secretary has been chosen to accompany the Lancashire County Standard Bearer and to carry the County Poppy Wreath at the 5 day Royal British Legion Great Pilgrimage 90 in August. Laying the wreath along with almost 1500 other Legion members from across the country is an esteemed honour and one that he is proud to undertake. We set up the Branch Legion Display Gazebo at the Thornton Gala and the Secretary laid a Poppy Wreath and recited the Legion’s Exhortation ‘they shall grow not old’ during the Parade and Service at the Thornton War Memorial. We will also be setting up the display at the Hambleton and Preesall - Knott End Galas. At the Hambleton Gala the Chairman has been asked to be one of the judges for the floats etc and, of course, we will be participating in the parades.

Sea Bank House
A special home for special people Sea Bank House is a residential home for elderly people who are unable to live independently in their own homes. Or philosophy of care is based on the belief that it is the right of any resident in the home to be respected as an individual, and that everyone has the right to be allowed to live as full and active a life as both their mental and physical condition allows. We endeavour to provide an environment which is not only comfortable and homely, but gives the warmth and understanding normally associated with family care but supported by specialist equipment and well trained care sta. Needs are met maintaining personal dignity, privacy and encouraging independence where possible. Activities, passive and active are encouraged throughout the day by trained care sta under the guidance of the Home Manager. Each care plan takes into consideration the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs, in order to create a care plan that is relevant to individuals. Recognising, nurturing and encouraging the residents remaining skills and ability to communicate is or paramount importance to the quality of care given at Sea Bank House.

OVER WYRE WHIST & DOMINOES Every Tuesday at Knott End Working Men’s Club 2:00pm - 4:00pm.
She arrived with handfuls of flowers and cuttings from her own garden which she used to illustrate her talk on ‘Planning and Designing Colour Themed Borders’.
All new members will be very welcome. We are a friendly group playing for pleasure.
She demonstrated how ‘hot’ colours, red, yellow, orange draw the eye and can make a garden appear smaller but how the ‘softer’ colours of blues and pinks are more restful causing the eye to focus through them and thus making a border seem larger.
ConstructElec Ltd
Marguerite is a great believer in audience participation so was soon handing round colour combinations using different plants and it was interesting to see the varied likes and dislikes of the members. She had many suggestions for plant combinations including some hints for obtaining year round interest in the garden. As always she provided us with an informative and entertaining evening. The next meeting will be on Mon 16th July at 7:30pm in St Bernard’s Church Hall, Hackensall Road, Knott End when Sarah Littlefield will talk about the ‘Lune River Trust’. Joyce Wilson (01253) 813 519

This month’s topic is definitely another one which jumped out at me following recent Located in Pilling covering the Over Wyre area events – Windows Updates. Those of you with Windows laptops or computers will probably know that the machine installs updates to Windows from time to time – in fact, the main updates happen regularly once a month with other oddments slipping in between when needed. Often you don’t even notice at all, or just get the ‘hang on, don’t switch off, installing updates’ message when you close down. It’s important that you let the updates complete successfully as they are often to improve security or fix things which don’t work properly. With Windows 10 there have also been some very big updates about twice a year. These have names such as ‘Anniversary Update’, ‘Creators Update’, ‘Fall Creators Update’, and the latest to join the list is ‘April Update’ otherwise known as version 1803. This started appearing on computers at the end of April and I have had dozens of calls about it! Most of the calls are because the update has gone through correctly but the final steps are somewhat confusing, and unfortunately a few have been because the update went badly wrong. So I thought a bit of guidance may be useful for anybody who hasn’t already received the update yet. The starting point is a message popping up

COMPUTER ADVICE (cont) to say ‘Important updates are pending’. Once you have accepted the request to let the update install, it will take quite a long while (perhaps an hour or more) so it needs to be left plugged in and switched on to get on with it. If all goes well: When it comes back on afterwards, you should get a blue screen with ‘Do more with your voice’. This gives two options from which you have to choose by clicking before you can move on - I recommend clicking on the second one for ‘don’t use speech recognition’ and then you can click the ‘Accept’ button which is in the bottom right corner. There will be about half a dozen of these screens asking questions. The standard answer is probably ‘no’ then ‘accept’. For one question, the choice is ‘basic’ or ‘enhanced’, choose ‘basic’ and then ‘accept’. When it’s finished and you’re back to the main screen, give it a bit more time to settle down before diving in to do any work straight away. If things don’t go well: if it comes back on with a blue screen showing ‘Please choose your keyboard layout’ and a list of countries/ languages etc, then I’m afraid that you have a bit of a problem. The update has gone wrong and Windows has become very tangled up! Don’t panic! It can be fixed, but there’s quite a bit of work required to get behind the scenes to backup your documents and pictures etc, then run some tools to fix the problem. You may well need some expert assistance to sort things out but it CAN be resolved. As ever if you have any questions or concerns about computer security etc then please do get in touch. WYRE JUNIORS FC Most of the teams at Wyre Juniors are now either enjoying a well-earned break or getting started with their pre-season training. The 2017/18 season has been one of the most successful we have had. WYRE JUNIORS FC (cont) to Year 2. Our SMFC focuses on having fun, making friends and playing football. We teach basic skills which will enable any child who attends to progress into their age group’s team and start playing matches at U7s. Many of the squads we currently have in the local leagues from U8s to open age all began at SMFC. Each session is run by FA and UEFA Qualified Coaches. This year SMFC has excelled itself thanks to the commitment of Bob and Vicky Robinson every Saturday morning. Along with highly qualified coaches from AFC Fylde the children have really enjoyed every session and from this we have created the two new U7s teams. If your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2, join us in September on Saturday morning. When the weather is fine we are out on the playing fields at Preesall Park, when it’s a little wet, we go indoors at the sports centre. Volunteers All our teams are run by volunteer coaches and parents. If you are interested in helping out or running a team, please get in touch. We will support you through Your FA Level 1 coaching course which includes first aid and child protection. Without community support all the teams we have would not exist. Even if you do not have a child playing football but you are interested in being involved Wyre Juniors could be for you! our website and we can be contacted on the email address given below.
However, we did have an evening visit to Preston Docks and members could take photographs throughout the Riversway Docklands area.
Members can often be seen with their cameras at local events such as Morecambe Steampunk Festival, Southport Airshow, Fleetwood Tram Festival and Heysham Viking Festival although some members like to go further afield to places such as France, India and China, all trying to get the winning images for next year’s competitions.
In July we have a visit to Arnside and can take photographs in the area from Sandside, through Arnside and to Arnside Crag. Then in August we have a full day visit to Bolton Abbey. Photographs taken on these visits can then be entered in our ‘Summer Cup’ competition and we have sections of Colour Print, Mono Print and Digital Images.
July also sees the Great Eccleston Show take place and representatives of the club will be taking the official photographs on behalf of the show as they have done for some years. An image from last year’s Show is shown
If anyone is considering joining the club next year, they would be welcome to join us on our summer visits which are a social occasion as well as an opportunity to take images for the Summer Cup competition. Full details are on

SOROPTIMISTS (cont) crisis. A combination of drought and flooding devastated crops, leaving many on the brink of starvation. Poor farming families were amongst the worst hit, like 8 year old Tadala’s. This year, Tadala’s family harvested just three bags of maize. In these difficult times, the daily meal that Mary’s Meals provide to 30% of the primary school-aged children across Malawi is not just a powerful incentive to go to school – it is a vital source of nourishment, comfort and hope. Tadala’s Mum, Victoria, only reached standard 6, and is determined to see her own daughter finish school. ‘I know she is disadvantaged because we live in poverty’ she says. Tadala seems intent on fulfilling her mother’s wishes: ‘School is important’, she declares confidently. ‘I want to find employment in the future. I want to be a teacher’. BackPack Project We are thrilled to report that a further batch of 20 filled packs have been sent off this month. As most of you know, this project enables children to attend school where they have their daily meal from Mary’s Meals, to receive the education provided. As the school year comes to an end please consider donating your used back packs – we send to all age groups from 3 – 13. Special Appeals Merlin Merlin is on the lookout for a peaceful home. He is a friendly boy with an independent nature who spends a lot of his day snoozing. Merlin only has three legs but doesn’t allow this to hold him back as he gets around just fine. However he would need to be kept indoors. He likes fuss but it really has to be on his terms. He is looking for an experienced cat home providing plenty of support when needed. His ideal home would be no children or other pets. Older late teens are much better suited who are calm and confident around cats.
These are friendly guinea pigs needing an owner who will invest time in them, making sure they receive lots of human interaction and handling. As they are a bonded pair, we would like the boys to be re-homed together. She enjoys her walks and is currently walked on a harness and gencon lead as she can be strong. She has a lot of potential but needs an

owner willing to carry out further socialisation and training, including basic lead manners.
The dates for the Mobile Library visits in the Over Wyre area for July are as follows:
Suzy is generally unsure around other dogs so would only be suited to a single dog household. An owner with previous experience of large breeds is essential. Suzy is a loving lady but isn’t suited to a home with children due to her large size and timid nature. Jasper Jasper is a friendly rabbit who has an inquisitive nature, following you around. He is fine being stroked but would benefit from further handling and socialisation. He will need a large double tier hutch and attached run. He is possibly ok to live with a neutered female rabbit but they would need to be introduced slowly at first. For more information or to arrange a meeting with one of the animals mentioned above, please contact the centre in Stalmine. CAT SMITH MP I’m delighted to announce that following a meeting with Jane Cole, the Managing Director of Blackpool Transport, the Sunday 2C bus service will be reinstated next spring. Blackpool Transport withdrew its Sunday service back in April 2016 after Lancashire County Council withdrew the subsidy for the 2C. The Council made the decision to end subsidies for bus services which would not otherwise be commercially viable which affected rural communities where populations are smaller and more spread out. I have continued to lobby both the Government and local Councils arguing that the withdrawal of public transport in rural Mr Greens Veg box green book 1_4 page.pdf areas makes it difficult and in some cases impossible to access education, employment

or health services. It also adds to the feelings of isolation and loneliness of many members in our community - in particular the elderly. The economic impact on rural communities is enormous when talented and skilled individuals feel they have no choice but to move to urban areas where public transport and services are easier to access. I feel strongly that if services aren’t in place to support young people who can’t afford driving lessons, cars and property, these youngsters will too look to move away from their rural communities. I am hugely grateful to Jane Cole from Blackpool Transport for working with me to find a solution. Whenever I am out and about talking to residents in Knott End and Preesall, the biggest issues that are raised with me are 1 12/03/2018 11:27 the lack of public transport, potholes and gas storage.

CAT SMITH MP (cont) I’m still working on potholes and stopping the industrialisation of our countryside – I’ll come back to you on these problems! In respect of the Sunday bus service, Jane has confirmed she’ll buy a new single decker bus to reduce the operational costs of running a double decker and at the moment the plan is to travel from Knott End through Hambleton and over to Poulton and on to Blackpool Hospital. Jane will announce the timetable nearer the time. The service will probably start in May. But here’s the thing – if we want to keep this service, we need to use it. Please consider ditching the car from time to time and taking the stress free approach to getting from A to B. A member of my team who has two pre-school children took the (very excited) kids for a trip on the bus last week to Poulton, getting off for a play at a playground and followed by a picnic before returning home (almost to her front door) and all for a ticket price of £2.70 plus whatever the cost was of making some butties. As the saying goes, ‘if we don’t use it, we lose it’ so please, please make the most of this valuable resource. I’d like to send my good wishes to everyone involved in this year’s galas.I hope everyone in Knott End and Preesall are practising their jazz hands as their theme this year is ‘Disney’ and it takes place Sat 14th July. The procession starts at 1:00pm with lots of decorated floats and costumes. There will be stalls and entertainment on the field as well as the crowning of the new Queen. And there will be live music on the field following the football final. I’m not sure I’ll be able to make it this year as I’ll have just had my baby but if not I’ll look forward to bringing my little one along next year to get involved! I also hope the Pilling Coffee Feast is a great success on Sat 28th July. These are important events to bring the whole
community together and in many cases they are part of the fabric and history of our villages - and an opportunity to marry the past with the present. Long may it continue – with perhaps more opportunities for there to be Kings as well as Queens! As I mentioned in my last article, Universal Credit is about to be rolled out across Over Wyre. If you find yourself having problems do call my office on (01253) 490440 or email me at cat.smith.mp@parliament.uk Otherwise I hope you all have a lovely July. Cat Smith MP

BEN WALLACE MP It is an extremely busy period in Westminster at the moment but, I am happy to say, I have been able to spend additional time in Lancashire. While it is important to represent our Constituency in Parliament, it is essential to travel around the area speaking to residents to fully understand the local and national issues which are of concern to Constituents. It will not come as a surprise to discover that my mailbox has been full of rail issues. Firstly commuters have been quite rightly angry about delayed and cancelled train services especially between Blackpool and Manchester. I use the train every week and share commuters concerns. The disruption and inconvenience caused to passengers is completely unacceptable and avoidable. The new timetable was meant to be good news for passengers with new services and routes, but its poor start has undermined this. Both Network Rail and Northern have failed passengers. I do believe that there are many questions which need to be answered and for that reason I welcome Network Rail and Northern’s decision to commission an independent report into the preparations and processes leading up to the implementation of the recent timetable and I will be paying close attention to their findings. The Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling MP, and the Rail Minister, Jo Johnson MP, are determined that the problems be dealt with as quickly as possible and that the issues are not repeated in the future. I have spoken out about the failures in the national media and have written to David Brown, Managing Director at Northern Rail,

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) urging him to take action to resolve this unacceptable state of affairs and to detail what compensation my constituents can claim for having their travel delayed. Another area of concern in connection with rail travel is the direct Virgin service between Blackpool and London service. Although I welcome the introduction of 35 new services per week between Blackpool and London I am disappointed that these will not call at Poulton-le-Fylde. The daily return service which does call at Poulton (the 5:30am) Blackpool – London and the 4:33pm London – Blackpool services) will remain. However, I believe that there is sufficient demand to justify further services calling at Poulton. With this in mind, I have recently written to Mark Whitehouse, Managing Director of Virgin Trains, putting a strong case for further services to stop at Poulton. I have also asked him to explain what consideration was given to the additional services calling at Poulton and asking him to seek to add Poulton as a calling point on future timetables. On the subject of transport, I have previously written about the representations I had made to Lancashire County Council calling for the Council to fund the Sunday Knott-End to Poulton bus service. The County has now responded to me and refused to offer any financial support. I do appreciate the impact the withdrawal of the service is having on residents who have depended on the route. I am now seeking a meeting with the Leader of the County Council and the Cabinet Member responsible to call on them to intervene given that the service is not considered to be commercially viable.

Although the scheme plays a vital role in allowing 2.4 million people in England to maintain their independence and is a lifeline for many, in recent months many local people have raised concerns about their applications being refused, when they have a genuine need for a Blue Badge. When I met with the Chief Executive of Lancashire County Council I highlighted my concerns and she has assured me that she will investigate further. Earlier this year the Government held a public consultation on proposals to extend the Blue Badge scheme to include people with nonphysical conditions. I know these proposals will be welcomed by many of my constituents, particularly those who suffer from severe autism and their carers.
Recently I spoke at Wyre Council’s Local Plan hearing. Like many of you I remain concerned about the housing need figures which the Local Plan is based upon, which I consider to be excessive. At the hearing I highlighted to the Inspector that as part of the Government’s consultation on ‘Planning for the right homes in the right places’ it proposed a standardised methodology for calculating housing need and published an indicative assessment of housing need for each local planning authority area. For Wyre the assessment of housing need using this new assessment methodology was 313 dwellings per annum for the period 2016 to 2026. This is significantly lower than the figure of 411 which the Council is using. I fear that the Council’s methodology will lead to problems down the line, such as

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) land banking and challenges to the Local Plan which result in development outside the areas which the Council is allocating for development. I also highlighted concerns with regard to individual areas which included Great Eccleston, Thornton, Poulton, Stalmine, Garstang, Hambleton, Inskip, Bowgreave and Catterall. I acknowledge that new homes are required across the Borough to ensure that young people are able to continue to live in the communities where they have grown up and that places are able to evolve. However, I believe the Council has over estimated housing need. If the Government’s housing need calculation was used then 1960 fewer new homes would need to be developed over the lifetime of the Plan.
I believe this would relieve many of the current pressures of proposed development. Wyre faces many challenges in the future from flooding, highway constraints, changing economic and employment trends, an ageing population and it is vital that all these issues continue to be taken into consideration. The Plan also recognises that Wyre has a diverse economic base and our population is well educated and adaptable and I am pleased that the Local Plan seeks to support these factors to make the Borough attractive to employers. I have mentioned the Safer Road fund in my previous articles. You will recall that I wrote to the Roads Minister to make the case for the funding to be allocated for improvements to the A588. I am delighted to report that ÂŁ1,904,000 has been allocated for the work between

Site Taxes Arrangements concerning Council Tax payments relating to the Willowgrove site off Sandy Lane in Preesall were discussed. As the matter also concerns other sites across the county, it was felt residents should contact their MP. Beach Access A decked access to the beach off the Esplanade in Knott End has been proposed. Natural England has provided information on how to obtain permission as this is classed as Site of Special Scientific Interest. A Town Council working group will consider possibilities. Trophy Purchase A trophy in memory of the late Cllr Vivien Taylor is to be sponsored by the Council at a cost of £150. Councillors saw a photo of the 12in trophy, which was suggested after research by the gala committee and will be awarded each year for the best fancy dress costume at the gala. Mr Wallace confirmed that he had asked the County Council what it proposed to do in response to the safety worries. At the June meeting of the SSRA committee, three major issues of local concern were discussed: •
the proposed new bypass to be on Mains Lane;
•
the 65 new houses to be built on Carr End Lane and the resultant traffic effects on the already dangerous A588 through our Over Wyre villages;
•
and the County Consultation on Community Transport. A585 Windy Harbour to Skippool scheme Mains Lane.

SSRA (cont) is dismayed by the proposals for the A585 Windy Harbour to Skippool scheme. We have sent our comments to Highways England in which we voiced our concerns about the lack of consultation in the Over Wyre area. There were no exhibitions and public events for the villages and townships served by the A588 from Mains Lane to Lancaster. We feel left out. The lack of serious proposals for the A588 / Mains Lane junction reflects this. The Road Safety Foundation says the A588 is the fourth most dangerous A-road in Britain and thus the most dangerous road in Lancashire.

Most of the traffic, created by developing commuter homes in the area, heads south in the mornings for the Preston travel to work area and to other areas beyond this. Already there are morning delays at the junction of the A588 and Mains Lane. The lack of clear plans for this junction makes matters worse. We fear motorists will seek rat runs north of the river Wyre on to the A6 and M6. Highways England already know the Hambleton and Stalmine areas are heavily dependent on private car use. It’s 81% for this area compared with the rest of Lancashire (70%) and the rest of Wyre (72%). There is an existing and inherent dependence on the private car for residents in this area. Public transport is appalling and walking alongside the most dangerous road in the county is fearful. Several committed developments along the A588 will lead to increased traffic. Development of gas storage in Stalmine by Halite will produce some 64 daily heavy lorry movements. This will contribute to car and heavy lorry conflict on the route.

SSRA (cont) Carr End Lane Development In a letter to the Chief Executive of Wyre Borough Council the Association has criticised a poorly written document from Lancashire County Council Highways Department about the proposed development of 65 houses off Carr End Lane, Stalmine.

The document, which supports the development, is difficult to understand, requires a high reading age and does not explain the County Engineer’s concerns about the safety of the A588. Wyre Council has put our objection letter on its website with other information about the development but has chosen to exclude our detailed computer analysis of the Highways Department letter. Cuts to Community Transport Lancashire County Council is consulting on a proposed 30% cut to the community transport budget. The Association objects to this proposal because of the effect it will have on the quality of life of older people and those without transport who need to go to the doctors or attend hospitals. With the help of County Councillor John Shedwick we managed to get the consultation deadline extended to Sun 24th June. Much of the consultation had been done online on the internet and missed the target audience of older people because they either don’t have access to the internet or have never used a computer. Our next two meetings are on Wed 4th July and Wed 5th Sept, 7:00pm at the Seven Stars. There is no August meeting For further information on any SSRA details please view our Facebook page or Stalmine Chat or contact Pauline Andrews 07808 058 097, Ann Ralph 07713 852 639, Barry Walsh 07528 031 944 or Peter Swarbrick (01253) 702675.

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE Message from the Practice Manager It has been a busy first half of the year at Over Wyre Medical Centre and I would like to take this opportunity thank our Practice Nurse Julienne Markland who retired at the end of June after working at Over Wyre Medical Centre for 20 years and serving the NHS for 42 years! We held a buffet lunch to say thank you and she will be sorely missed. I thought I also would take this opportunity to update our patient population on our GP Team. We are extremely happy to welcome back Dr Vicky Simpson who will return from maternity leave on Mon 9th July. Vicky is now the proud mother of Alice aged 6 months and James aged 2. As one of our female GP’s Vicky looks after gynaecology and female contraception and is also a GP Trainer. Vicky is also a fantastic baker and we all look forward to her cakes when it is a staff birthday! Our newest GP Partner is Dr Sarah Hopkins. Sarah lives in Garstang and very much enjoys the outdoor life being a keen cyclist and runner. Like Dr Simpson, Sarah also looks after gynaecology and female contraception and is also a GP Trainer. We are very lucky having GP Trainers at the Practice. This allows us to take on qualified doctors who are in the penultimate or final year of their GP training to be a family doctor. Hence Sarah and Vicky have been great additions to our GP team. Our longest serving GP is Dr Steve Lynch who with a heavy heart I announce will be retiring at the end of November. Dr Lynch has worked at Over Wyre Medical Centre for over 25 years and he is very proud of heading up our GP Partnership and steering the Practice to its recent Outstanding rating by the CQC. We have all benefitted from Dr Lynch’s experience and kindness

OVER WYRE MEDICAL (con) over the years. Dr Jerome Kerrane is very much our Respiratory expert within the Practice and we all look to his expertise when COPD takes prevalence during the winter months. Jerome loves his football and is a very passionate Manchester United fan. Indeed if you have ever had a consultation with Jerome you will notice the picture of the famous ex United legend Eric Cantona on his wall! It now seems a long time ago since Dr Claire Bolton returned from maternity leave and is now the proud mother of Charlotte aged 1 and Matthew aged 4. Claire has been at Over Wyre Medical Centre for 9 years and I always receive many compliments from patients for her caring bed side manner. Claire is our Diabetes Lead GP and also looks after gynaecology and female contraception. Dr Luke Holmes has been with us for 5 years and is the proud father of Ben aged 8 and
Emily aged 3. Luke is our Neighbourhood Lead GP so is currently liaising a lot with Garstang Medical Centre and Great Eccleston to try and give rural practices a larger voice and iron out inequalities in access to NHS services. Luke is also a passionate fan of Arsenal football club but we can forgive him for that! Dr Oliver Totty is a Lytham lad who returned home in 2016 after working in Manchester as a GP for the previous 9 years. Oli is our Safeguarding and Mental Health Lead and his previous experience has been invaluable. Considering only 4% of GP Practices have been awarded Outstanding, Oli’s previous Practice in Manchester got this rating and now he has come to Over Wyre we have also received this rating. We believe it was a team effort but perhaps Oli is indeed a lucky mascot! We are very fortunate to have access to two specialists in the management of joint and muscular complaints at Over Wyre Medical Centre. As experienced Physiotherapists they will educate and provide appropriate exercise to manage these conditions. This service is particularly aimed at new problems that have transpired in the last three months. Anyone registered at Over Wyre Medical Centre can access this new and exciting service directly without necessarily needing to see your GP first. Please contact OWMC reception for further information. The Medical Centre will be closed for staff training on Wed 4th July from 12:30pm and will re-open as usual on Wed 8th July. Thank you for your continued support. John MacPhee - Practice Manager (01253) 951165
