COMMUNITY JAZZ ORCHESTRA The Over Wyre Community Jazz Band has recently been established. It is a swing/jazz band with meetings in Preesall Youth and Community Centre on Sundays at 3:00pm. We are looking out for more players trumpets, trombones, saxophones, piano/ keyboard, drums, guitar, bass players. Musicians don’t have to be professional, however they do need to be able to read music. It’s for over 18s and it’s for fun with the aim to play some concerts. It is a big band playing jazz and swing music, so an interest in this genre would be good. For further information please do get in touch. Jennefer Lee 07548 898 175

At the end of the evening the arrangements were raffled and three lucky members went home very happy. Anne Bewes (01253) 811712

BRINE WATCH A group of residents from Fleetwood and across Wyre, concerned with Halite’s plans to dispose of up to 80,000 cubic metres of toxic brine into the sea off Rossall, every day, have joined together to keep other residents in the area informed of the scheme. BRINE WATCH (cont) pump out this huge volume of water from the fish dock at Fleetwood, creating gas storage caverns Over Wyre and then disposing of the toxic brine, eight times denser than sea water, along pipes under the river, across the Wyre peninsula and into the sea, less than 1.5 miles off the coastline. Halite have admitted it will create a 100-metre dead zone in the sea, around the outflow pipe, but BrineWatch are concerned it will destroy the wider food web, which will have a dramatic effect on all the associated wildlife and impact upon local livelihoods. The brine disposal is set to continue day after day for at least 10 years. Residents wanting to help or find out more about BrineWatch should visit www. facebook.com/brinewatch and their website will launch shortly. The BrineWatch buoy is anchored off Rossall at the position chosen by Halite to release

On Fri 21st June the Gardening Club is having a trip to the Harlow Carr Flower Festival. Harlow Carr is, at present, the only RHS garden in the north of England so this is an opportunity to visit the gardens as well as check out the stands of the nursery growers who exhibit there. (Bridgewater Garden near Salford is due to open in 2020).
May is a lovely month of the year. The cherry blossom, the bluebells, the fresh green leaves. All this has inspired our group to get outside to paint.
There are still a few seats left on the coach if any non Gardening Club members are interested in joining us. The cost is £25 per person which includes the coach and entry to the Festival. We will leave Knott End Ferry Car Park at 9:00am with pickups being made in Preesall, Stalmine and Hambleton. There will be a stop en route at Smith’s Garden Centre. Anyone wanting more information please contact Sandra Langhorne (01253) 813739. Joyce Wilson (01253) 813519
Our efforts over the winter can still be seen at our latest exhibition in Garstang Arts Centre by High Street Car Park during all of June. This is a lovely gallery open on Tuesdays and Thursdays but only in the morning on Saturdays. Teas are served also so it’s worth popping in if you’re in the area. We have purchased a new pull-up banner to promote exhibitions and also three fisherman type tents for our outdoor painting. The Lancashire Tea in April raised a whopping £515 and £45 was raised from the sale of art books donated to us. Thanks to everyone concerned. Eleven of us had a great day out with GLine to see the the Rennie Mackintosh artwork at the Walker Gallery in Liverpool which is still

THE FAIRY BALL The fairies in my garden all On Midsummer Night hold a magical ball. I’m very lucky to get an invite, For as you know, I’m not a sprite. Not Brownie or Goblin, nor Fairy, not Fay, But I always enjoy my Midsummer Day. By nightfall the fairies all gather around,

It’s strange but nobody else hears a sound. There’s a magical band of wee fairy folk, All playing in tune Elfin music bespoke. I’ve never heard pan-pipes played so before, This mystical music the fairies adore. There’s Dew Wine served in cute acorn cups And honeydew cakes, no one interrupts The party of fairies and sweet dancing elves And everyone really enjoys themselves. My cute little friends, they all dance and sing, Inside an enchanted toadstool ring. Glow worms in bushes provide golden light, It really is an incredible sight! When fairy-folks’ feet become tired and sore Into the air, one by one, they all soar. They dance up there with flittering wings. As I see them together my heart really sings. Back down to earth they return one by one, Telling each other they’re having such fun.

ARE MOBILE PHONES SAFE?
But it’s time to prepare for their special guest, Queen Mab is arriving, all dressed in her best!
There is a simple two letter answer to the above question that you will not be pleased to hear but let us look in a little more detail at what goes on with those amazing and addictive little pieces of technology.
From her golden coach she alights with a smile, And says she will stay with us all for a while. She sips so daintily her honey-dew wine and her dress is a wonder of star-dust sublime! Around her a sparkling aura is cast, We treasure the moments but know they can’t last. For she must depart when the sun’s in the East, But she thanks us all for the magical feast. And so she departs with a pixie retinue, Leaving us wishing another visit were due. We clear up the feast and put things away, And wait for next year and Midsummer Day. Norma Southwood
Did you know that a well known phone manufacturer says in it’s instructions to use the phone six inches away from your head? If this is the case what is it they are concerned about? Phones emit electro magnetic fields or EMFs and the evidence for what they do or don’t do to us is controversial. Sadly much science these days is bought and paid for by the people who want a certain result to be shown so it is very difficult to ascertain what the truth is BUT there are many concerns of what these devices do to us. We are soon to face the new 5G phone system yet nobody has asked us if we want it. Commercial forces are getting their

(cont) way once more but over 240 scientists and doctors who have published research about EMFs have appealed to the United Nations calling for urgent action to reduce our ever growing EMF exposures and they have asked for a moratorium on the roll-out of 5G citing the serious risks to human health and the environment. The city of Brussels has already banned the roll out of 5G. Published peer reviewed science already indicates that the current wireless technologies of 2G, 3G and 4G – in use today with our cell phones, computers and wearable tech – creates radiofrequency exposures which pose a health risk to humans, animals and the environment. Scientists are cautioning that before rolling out 5G, research on human health effects urgently needs to be done first to ensure the public and environment are protected.

Below are quotes from three pieces of research I found at the excellent PUBMED website: ‘Based upon recent and new evidence we hypothesise that a major contribution for the relative sudden upsurge in neurological morbidity in the Western world (19892015), is because of increased background EMF that has become the tipping pointimpacting upon any genetic predisposition, increasing multiple-interactive pollutants, such as rises in petro-chemicals, hormone disrupting chemicals, industrial, agricultural and domestic chemicals. The unprecedented neurological death rates, all within just twentyfive years, demand a re-examination of longterm EMF safety related to the increasing background EMF on human health. We do not wish to ‘stop the modern world’, only make it safer.’ And another study found that: ‘exposure to electromagnetic fields from GSM 900 and 1800 generated by base stations contributed to the occurrence of depressive disorders among medical personnel’. And for the natural world it has been found that: ‘mobile phone radiation had significantly reduced the hatching ratio (of bees)….We provide evidence that mobile phone radiation may alter pupal development’. My advice to you would be to keep your phone away from your body at all times. Switch it to airplane mode at night and switch off your router at night too. Did you know wifi is banned in French primary schools due to concerns over what it may do to children? In addition, good health food shops should have in ‘energy dots’ which you can place on your phone and they reduce the harmful element of the EMFs without affecting your phone signal. Have a look, they even sell one you can put in your home to protect everything in a 90 metre radius. Nick Tofalos (01995) 602833

NEWS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL Fleetwood’s Charity Pre-school & School
enhancing cognitive development.
The free Forest School taster sessions have given families new to our school a real insight into the quality of our outdoor provision. We are lucky to have such a well-established, beautiful forest area in our grounds as well as an experienced Forest School leader.
Look at the photographs on our school Facebook page to see examples of outdoor learning which include: den building, exploring mud, learning about nature and campfire cooking to name but a few. All National Curriculum subjects can be taught in the forest!
We have been delivering forest sessions each week for at least 10 years! Julia Crompton, our Forest School Leader, was one of the first people to be trained in Lancashire and she has also had the opportunity to gain further qualifications at settings in Denmark, who are leaders in outdoor education. If you ask any of the children what they like best about our school – undoubtedly they will say – going in the forest. The wide range of activities they engage in help to develop essential skills such as: teamwork, resilience, independence, problem-solving as well as
Our Knit and Natter sessions have begun with the pupils of Year 6 learning a new skill, relaxing and chatting with friends with the help and assistance from Friends of Knott End Library. The aim is to teach the children how to knit squares that we will turn into pet blankets. Cheerleading has begun, lead by Miss Gemma from the Laura Sandham School of Dance, and the children are learning a routine to perform at the Preesall Gala. Dance is another important aspect of school

TOP OF THE HILL (cont) life to which we give high priority. This year our pupils have been taught street dance, flamenco, cabaret, cheer leading, contemporary and free style. Dance is amazing for developing selfconfidence, strength and flexibility. We also have street dance classes every Wednesday after school which are open to children from any school.
There will be a range of craft stalls to look at and some of our pupils will be performing musical items including a fabulous ‘Mary Poppins’ routine which we performed in the Autumn Term at the Winter Gardens. We will be drawing the winners for our Grand Raffle prizes. Admission is £2.50 per adult to include tea or coffee and cake.
You may have seen our art work on display in the new Community Room at the Over Wyre Medical Centre. Our Head Boy and Head Girl attended the grand opening and were interviewed by local press, also appearing on Granada Reports on national television.
You may have noticed that we are now offering weekly ‘Stay and Play’ sessions for parents and babies or toddlers in school on Thursday mornings from 9:45am - 11:15am. These sessions are free and open to anyone. Parking is available on our school playground. Bring your child to play and meet other parents.
We have an important event this month. Everyone is welcome to join us on Wed 26th June at St Oswald’s Church Hall for our Afternoon Tea and Grand Raffle.

CARTER’S NEWS Carter’s Charity Primary School As this edition is published we will be heading towards the final seven weeks of a busy and fulfilling year. This time of year brings with it the confusing prospect of sunshine and tests – not always an ideal combination! We finished the last half term with a whole school ‘Health Week’. This was planned to celebrate the end of the Year 6 SATs and enable us to engage in, and learn from, lots of activities aimed at improving our understanding of what it means to be healthy. We started the week with a whole school yoga and meditation session with the Tuesday morning seeing lots of families and friends (and dogs) walking to school along the seawall from the ferry. Unfortunately, the café wasn’t open for granola and oat milk! The Wednesday of that week was one of the highlights of our year – Sports Day. The field was ablaze with colour and sound as every child took part, in their school teams of Brock, Lune, Ribble and Wyre in a range of events including the traditional ‘egg and spoon’ and sack races. The whole team and school community, supported by our local Co-Op shops, enjoyed the competition and camaraderie. At the end of the week, our Y5 children received food hygiene training through Lancashire County Council’s catering team that will see them play an active role in mealtimes during the coming year. We are very lucky with the location of our school, in terms of space and environment. A recent article by the BBC extolled the positive impact of beach schools on children’s health and development www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/ education-48151527/how-beach-schoolhelps-children-learn-without-realising-it We have been an official Beach School for over five years now with our children spending mornings exploring and using the coastline to support their education.

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES
Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?
Dr Finlay Sutton
If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.
Brenda’s Testimonial
Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

CARTER’S NEWS (cont) We also welcome other groups and schools to use our expertise and facilities. To link with this, we are currently developing a forest school activity area and a track around our field that will increase the use of our space over the whole year. This term also sees us preparing our elder students for their move on to high school (27 going to St Aidan’s and 1 each to Hodgson and Lancaster Girls’ Grammar) while easing our new starters into ‘big school’. The families and children have opportunities to spend time in Carter’s before September, including the wonderful task of getting to know their buddies – our current Y4 children will be fabulous leaders and mentors. We are hosting a session from the county’s Adult Learning team on getting your child ready for school on Tues 4th June, if you are interested please contact the school office.

MEET AND GREET NAAFI CAFE Over Wyre Veterans The next meeting of this Group will be on Mon 17th June 10:00am in the Preesall Youth and Community Centre. The aim of the Over Wyre Veterans Meet and Greet NAAFI Cafe is to bring together those who are serving or have served in the Armed Forces in an informal atmosphere just for a chat with like-minded people. From the inaugural meeting in March the numbers that attended the April meeting

NAAFI CAFE (cont) increased to 18. Now it will be wait and see if those numbers are maintained or increase. The more people we get attending the more facilities we will be able to offer as well as plan outings etc.
The Over Wyre RBL Branch are organising a coach trip to the National Memorial Arboretum on Wed 21st Aug. Anyone interested should speak to either Tom Reilly (07772 168 731) or myself at one of the meetings.
Again I would like to highlight that under the NHS covenant all medical centres are now supposed to ask a patient whether or not they are or have served in HM Forces. If they have, their documents should be annotated as such under the code number NHS 13JY. More ex-Service personnel have added their names to the original 44 that the Medical Centre had recorded. Keep them coming!
We haven’t as yet been able to spread the word of the Group’s existence in the other villages in Over Wyre but we are working on it.The Veterans Meet and Greet NAAFI Cafe Facebook page has been set up as well as a website so hopefully the message is getting out there.
Alison Stirzaker, Lancashire Age UK Older Veterans representative, visited the Front Room in the Medical Centre in May and it was very interesting what she had to say and what she can do. It may be for consideration to ask her to come and give a short presentation at one of our gatherings?
If you have served in HM Forces at any time in the past then please consider coming along for a natter and a chat about past times, problems that you may have, current affairs – it just doesn’t really matter because IT IS GOOD TO TALK. ROTARY Rotary Helps Garstang Community Academy Students with their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Garstang Community Academy will have taken approximately 600 students through the DofE Award of which some 100 students are currently working towards achieving. The Award has substantial international credibility for colleges, universities and future employers. Students who take up this opportunity gain first-hand life skills – such as planning, organising, sticking with an activity no matter what and team building. The bronze level requires students to undertake a two day and one night journey independent of adults and modern day comforts. To achieve this, they need tents,
cooking stoves, sleeping bags, suitable clothing, rainwear, footwear and food to sustain them. In addition, they need a large rucksack to carry all the gear! Most students come away with fantastic memories of the first time they camped with their friends. Students are encouraged to obtain their own personal clothing and footwear, but many find it difficult to access the specialised equipment such as tents, cooking equipment and rucksacks. In the past the Academy borrowed this equipment from Lancashire County Council but due to changes at LCC, it is no longer available. Since the loss of this facility the Academy has been able to obtain enough tents and rucksacks to satisfy their needs. However, there was a major shortfall in the availability of cooking stoves so the

ROTARY (cont) Academy approached us to see if Rotary could sponsor the supply of ten Trangia cooking stoves at a cost of £70 each. A joint meeting was held and the Academy provided details of their work to date on the Bronze Award complete with video data. It was provisionally agreed to provide sponsorship but it was necessary to seek support from the Rotary District which deals with over 70 Rotary Clubs throughout Cumbria and Lancashire. The arrangement was fully agreed at the end of April. In May a final external dry run for students taking the bronze award this year was held on the sports field. This involved pitching tents and cooking an evening meal on the Trangia cooking stoves. Members of Rotary were invited to attend this activity. The Academy Principal, Alasdair Ashcroft, welcomed the guests from the Garstang Rotary Club and said ‘The school governors,
myself, my colleagues and the students are most grateful for the generosity displayed by Rotary in sponsoring the supply of the specialized camping stoves. They will be used by students undertaking this award for many years to come.’ In reply Rotarian Steve Iles said ‘We are delighted at being able to help the Academy, which is such an important part of our local community. We admire the effort of the members of your staff who provide the necessary assistance, training and supervision for this truly excellent work in pursuit of the Duke of Edinburgh’s award.’ Julie Parkinson - DofE Co-ordinator Garstang Community Academy JParkinson@ garstangcommunityacademy.com Don Goodier, Rotary Public Relations donald.goodier@btinternet.com

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Our membership is slowly increasing. Currently we have 23 members (a far cry from two years ago when we were contemplating closing the Branch) but keep coming as we need to grow even more! We have some very interesting meetings. A number of our members attended the Over Wyre Veterans and Families Meet and Greet NAAFI Cafe events in April and May where some interesting topics of conversation were forthcoming. The proposed coach trip to the National Memorial Arboretum is now definite for Wed 21st Aug. The cost of the coach is £735 which will be split between all those travelling. Currently we have approximately 30 interested in going. The trip is open to all - not just those from the RBL. There will also be an additional cost for those who want to take the small train round the grounds, approximately £6, but I can tell you
40
that it is worth every penny. Overall the cost should be between £20 to £25. Anyone wishing to go on this wonderful excursion should contact either myself or Tom Reilly 07772 168 731 or thomasreillyjnr@ gmail.com. Currently we only want names of those interested. The actual cost and how to pay will be communicated at a later date. The Lancashire Community Fundraiser visited us in April to carry out a Poppy Appeal Support visit which we passed with flying colours. Everything is being accounted for in accordance with TRBL and PA procedures. Many of you will know that Thurs 6th June is the 75th Anniversary of the 2nd World War D-Day landings. The Legion has chartered a small cruise ship to take 300 D-Day veterans and their Carers to re-visit the D-Day beaches. We also have available a small number of commemorative 75th Anniversary Poppy Appeal Lapel pins. Please contact me

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION (cont) if you would like one of the pins (£3 each). We have taken a local veteran to the RBL Welfare Break Centre in Southport for a holiday whilst, at the same time, taking some local veterans’ application forms. His response when we collected him was that it was the best holiday he had ever had. Words of praise indeed. In May we attended the launch of the Over Wyre Medical Centre Front Room project. All we need to do now is put some RBL literature in there so that people know what we do for those who have served their country. We met with Alison Stirzaker, Lancashire Age UK Older Veterans representative in the Front Room. It was interesting to learn what Age UK is also doing to help those of more senior years and who have served their country. It was a shame that there weren’t more in attendance to learn what they can do. LANCASTER SINGERS ‘River Song’ Sat 8th June 7:30pm Hornby Parish Church Sun 9th June 7:30pm Ashton Memorial, Lancaster Lancaster Singers are proud to close a greatly successful season with two exciting concerts this June, performing a wide range of music based on the theme of rivers. The Lancaster Singers will be completing a wonderful season of concerts which began with a powerful performance of Karl Jenkins’ ‘The Armed Man’ as part of Lancaster City Council’s official Remembrance Day, and which also included a new English Libretto of Bach’s ‘St. John Passion’ last March.
Under the experienced direction of Duncan Lloyd, the Lancaster Singers will be performing a wide variety of pieces, from wellknown gospel tunes to rich arrangements of classics such as ‘Shenandoah’ and Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water.’ There are also some less conventional items including Eric Whitacre’s ‘Cloudburst’ and the piece from which the concerts are named, Roger Emerson’s ‘Riversong.’ Saturday’s concert at Hornby Parish Church will have no tickets or entry fee. Donations will be in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Tickets for the Ashton Memorial concert are £10, available from the Lancaster Tourist Information office and the Lancaster Singers’ website: www.lancastersingers.org or Email tickets@lancastersingers.org Lancaster Singers

BEN WALLACE MP With summer around the corner and the weather improving, I am delighted to continue to have the opportunity to travel around the constituency. I always take on board the views and concerns of local residents when I meet or correspond with them and this is reflected in my work at the House of Commons. I also travel around the county of Lancashire to visit groups, charities and organisations which provide a service to our constituency. Derian House Recently I visited Derian House in Chorley, which is a children’s hospice. I would like to thank all staff for making me welcome and for giving me a tour of this amazing facility.
I have taken away issues from the visit which I will highlight with the relevant organisations. My overall memory I will take away from the visit is how outstanding the staff and the facility are and the amazing service it provides to the families, children and young people it cares for. The staff undertake such important and difficult work, with great professionalism and compassion. The visit was a truly humbling experience, which I will always remember. Re-surfacing Work My mailbag continues to highlight many local issues to me. I am pleased that re-surfacing work and major patching has been carried out and is continuing on the A588. Often with better roads come more traffic and the fact that safety has to keep up, so with that in mind I am dealing with many requests for crossings and traffic calming measures.

fundraising efforts, and we have decided on ‘Think Pink Sri Lanka – Women Driving for Women’. This is exactly what it says on the tin - a mission driven solution to provide safety for women and a sustainable income for families living on or below the poverty line. It aims to solve the issue of over 90% of women having experienced sexual harassment on public transport in Sri Lanka. Our goal this year and for the next year or two, is to try and raise in excess of £3,000 to purchase a pink Tuk Tuk. It’s a big undertaking but we feel confident that we’re up to it and that we will get the support from the wonderful people in this region. PILLING METHODIST CHURCH
60 Years A Member
Monthly Bible Fellowship
In 1959 a young farmer’s wife, Lois Davidson, joined the local WI. Her Mum was a member and she quickly became an active member alongside her.
The Bible Fellowship Group has recently changed time and venue. It is now meets on the last Thursday in each month at Epworth House (Pilling Methodist Church Manse) on Carr Lane, Pilling. This month’s meeting is on Thurs 29th June from 10:00am to 11:00am.
Pilling Lane WI has been going for 84 years, originally meeting at Carter’s School. They were there for many years but eventually had to move to the Church Hall in Preesall, as the school could no longer accommodate them. They still meet there today. Over 45 of those years, Lois has been either Secretary or President of the WI and they have achieved many things. Notably she held a garden party most years to raise money for various charities. The WI raised money for equipment for the new medical centre, held competitions between the schools and presented them with jubilee mugs and other tokens. They also served tea on Gala Day on the field.
All are welcome to come to this and, if you need any further information, please contact Rev Alex Yesudas (01253) 790903. Andrew Bell (01253) 790649
ECUMENICAL SERVICE For Christian Unity The Ecumenical service for Christian Unity in Pilling will be held at the Methodist Church on Sun 9th June at 6:30pm, led by Rev Alex Yesudas. All are welcome to this united service. Followed by light refreshments. Andrew Bell (01253) 790649
Lois has been involved in many sketches when the WI took to the stage, most notably as a fairy supporting Father Christmas. In March, Lois was taken to the Lancashire Federation of Women’s Institutes Annual Meeting in the Floral Hall, Southport where she was presented with a certificate for being a member for 60 years. Thank you Lois from all your friends and from the local Community for helping make our village a wonderful place to live. The WI continues under the Presidency of Anne Bewes. We have over 40 members and a very varied programme including visits to local places of interest. We meet on the first Wednesday of the month in St Oswald’s Parish Hall at 7:30pm. COMPUTER ADVICE Did you know that Microsoft Windows software, like many other products, generally has a finite lifespan after which bugs are not fixed and any security flaws become much more dangerous?

I have written in the past about both Windows XP and Windows Vista, which became obsolete in 2014 and 2017 respectively. It’s now time to start thinking about Windows 7 as well, as there will be no more security patches or bug fixes for that from next January.
So what, you may be wondering. Well, for one it probably means that your Windows 7 Located in Pilling covering the Over Wyre area machine is up to ten years old and is therefore getting a little long in the tooth! (Windows 7 was introduced in October 2009 and was replaced by Windows 8 in August 2012.) It also means that it will then be at increasing risk of security problems as some of the ‘bad guys’ will be specifically targeting their viruses at old systems when they find a security hole which they know Microsoft will not be fixing. You could also have problems if you buy a new piece of equipment to connect to the computer (printer, scanner, camera etc) as not all new devices will work properly with Windows 7. New software programs will increasingly be less likely to work, and you will also find that as time goes on you are unable to use some websites or browsers. So what can you do if your operating system is currently Windows 7? There’s no need to panic, as we haven’t actually reached the expiry date yet. However, it will be sensible to start planning for action by January. You could: 1. Carry on using your existing PC / laptop and hope that you can avoid any problems. If you want to do this, then PLEASE do take some precautions make sure you have a backup of all your pictures etc, make sure you have installed the last set of updates for Windows, make sure you have an active

COMPUTER ADVICE (cont) and updating antivirus package. Be vigilant at all times and follow all of my usual instructions about staying safe. 2. Keep the current computer and upgrade the operating system (possibly). If your machine is at the younger end of the age scale and in fine physical shape, you can check whether it meets the minimum requirements to run Windows 10. If it can, then you could consider buying and installing the latest operating system. 3. Buy a new or refurbished machine – a new PC, laptop, or even a tablet may meet your needs and prices have probably come down quite a lot since you bought your current system. Any documents and pictures etc on your old machine can be transferred to a new one, so you shouldn’t lose anything. Other important dates for support: •
Office 2010 (Service Pack 2) ends in October 2020.
•
Windows 8.1 ends in January 2023.

RSPCA Dave
Maggie - Cat
Dave originally came to us in November after we were asked to assist with several cats that had been straying.
Maggie is an extremely sweet lady who came into our care after being abandoned by her previous owner.
Dave was rehomed soon after but is now looking for a second chance at a forever home after he was sadly returned to our care. Dave can be a little timid around strangers but with people he knows he is super friendly and will come looking for attention where he enjoys being stroked and fussed. Due to his nervous nature Dave can be easily spooked by loud noises and sudden movements, so he is better suited to a calm and quiet household. He is looking for a new home with a patient and understanding owner who is able to read his behaviour and understand his needs.
On arrival, Maggie was very nervous of new faces but with a little support and some quiet time to settle in, her confidence has much improved and we are now seeing her loving side. She can still be a little wary but once she is comfortable Maggie does come out of her shell and will often begin rolling around or will curl up on your knee. She is eager to find a peaceful and quiet home without young children where she can relax and enjoy a comfortable life as a senior feline where she will be loved and adored! Maggie is looking to be the only animal in the house and she will need a bit of support and

RSPCA (cont) time to settle in her new home with adopters who are willing to allow her to adjust to her new surroundings at her own pace. Dasher Dasher is also looking for a new home after his previous owner had a change in circumstances and could no longer care for him. He is a friendly rabbit but lacks confidence at times. He is fine being stroked and picked up but would benefit from further handling and socialisation. Dasher will need a large double tier hutch and a large attached run. He is possibly ok to live with a neutered female rabbit but they would need to be introduced slowly at first. For more information or to arrange a meeting with either Dave, Maggie or Dasher please contact the Animal Centre.
Lancaster Charity Shop Break In We were devastated that our charity shop in Lancaster was broken into in the early hours of Mon 22nd April by a lone man. Having smashed the front window to gain access, he then went on to smash a large glass cabinet in the shop before stealing the collection tins and a number of stock items. The damage and losses incurred amounted to over £850 and we are unable to claim for some of the stolen items or the amount that was in the collection tins at the time. Thank you to all that have given us donations to date - we will keep a record of the amount given to help these unexpected costs. Easter Open Day We would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who attended our Easter Open Day in April. We raised a fantastic £900 which will go towards the continued care of animals at Longview. Also, a big thankyou to our dedicated team of volunteer fundraisers who helped organise the event and run the stalls. RSPCA One Fun Day We are excited to announce that the next event taking place at the Animal Centre will be our Mad Hatters Tea Party and Fun day on Sun 16th June which is part of the RSPCA One Fun Day taking place at a number of animal centres across the UK. There will be a tea party taking place between 11:00am - 4:00pm as well as a variety of stalls to browse. Dog grooming will also be available on the day. CRY Cardiac Risk In The Young Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund Well, it’s almost summer! Although we may have been quiet for a little while in this magazine the fund has been extremely busy with events and behind the scenes activity. A wee trip to Scotland in April gave us the opportunity to meet up for coffee and cake with Mike Coleran who staunchly cycled from the Isle of Wight to Inverness in 14 days whilst experiencing all four seasons during his adventure. Raising an incredible £4,800+, Mike’s original plans to cycle to the Isle of Lewis were scuppered when the ferry to South Uist was changed to a winter only service! Undeterred, plan B came into operation seeing Mike’s travels taking him along the beautiful, but extremely hilly (or should that say mountainous?) Caledonian Canal route.
Challenge achieved, Mike was welcomed back to Garstang with a get together of family and friends at St Helen’s church café (By the way, did you know cakes for CRY are sold at the café each week?). Well done Mike! On behalf of the young people who can now have their hearts tested free of charge – all 96 of them – thank you - it’s an amazing achievement and every credit to you and those who so generously supported and sponsored your journey. April should also have seen Matthew celebrate his 30th birthday so to mark the occasion Zoe, Krystal and I decorated 30 pebbles, each with a memory of Matt and we have placed them in 30 places that were a part of Matt’s life. It is our hope that these memories of Matt will travel far and wide to places he can now never go; that they will brighten someone’s day as he brightened ours and that they may spread a little

CRY (cont) awareness of CRY and the wonderful work they do in preventing loss and heartache. On Facebook we can already see photos of these lovely pebbles on their travels as folk share pictures of their finds and rehiding them for others to discover. Thank you for that. So many people have told us they love seeing the stories of who has found them, where at, and the stories behind the rocks. Last month we spent three lovely days at Bilsborrow Village Hall at the Garstang Patchwork Quilters fabulous. We hope to bring you more news from this event shortly. May saw us outside Booths with the CRY Babies, selling cakes and promoting Anne Whittingham and Clare Bujeya’s forthcoming adventures along Hadrian’s Wall and the Gt North Run, and also hear about Azcend’s Summer party at the Barn on Fri 12th July. Tickets are £25 from Azcend, with funds raised going to both buy a defibrillator for the
Hub and to CRY. Cheers to the kind-hearted and talented bakers and all who were involved. We look forward with eager anticipation to hearing their adventures unfold. Thanks are also due to the kind donators, visitors, buyers, helpers and Garstang Town Trust for helping raise a wonderful £312 at our rather chilly, but dry market stall. With two weeks still to go in May and a full diary we’ll have lots to update you with next time, but for now I’ll sign off and look forward to welcoming visitors to our stand on Sat 1st June at Catterall Gala, featuring a ‘Cuddles & Bubbles’ tombola and the very popular ‘Pick a Daisy’ game with gardening prizes. CAT SMITH MP Hello everyone. If you haven’t already heard, I’m delighted to reveal that Blackpool Transport has agreed to reinstate the Sunday 2C bus service between Knott End and Blackpool.
of the country, stopping on the way via the hospital. It would be great if the local community arranged a monthly away-day picnic on the bus during the summer or could consider events like a monthly Knott End street market to bring people into the area on the bus.
The service starts on Sun 23rd June and will run hourly – with the first one leaving Knott End at 9:30am and the last one leaving at 6:30pm – and not only that but we’ll be able to travel in luxury on a new iconic Palladium bus fitted with WiFi, e-leather seating and wood effect flooring!
It’s been a top priority for me to liaise with Blackpool Transport to bring this service back and I’d like to thank Managing Director Jane Cole for her support in making this happen. The service will be reviewed monthly during the summer season. Please ensure Blackpool Transport continues to be able to run the service by regularly using it.
It’s important to highlight that this service will return on the basis of ‘use it or lose it’. It’s incredibly important therefore that we take advantage of this service, maybe ditch the car for the day and make the most of a relaxing journey between here and the tourism capital
There is of course another reason why I’m so keen for all my constituents to be able to access public transport. For a long time, I’ve been deeply concerned about the damage to our environment which is why I’ve opposed the gas storage development, why I’ve

CAT SMITH MP (cont) opposed fracking and why I’ve championed renewable energy schemes. Regular public transport services take cars off the road, reduces harmful emissions, improves our air quality and alleviates traffic congestion and noise. Recently I spoke in Parliament supporting Labour’s motion to declare an environment and climate emergency. I’m pleased that our motion has led to our being the first country in the world to do so. Every morning, hundreds of my constituents get into their cars and drive to access jobs and education. Given a reliable, low carbon alternative I know many would jump at the chance of leaving their car at home – but that simply isn’t possible. The Government needs to get serious about investing in sustainable transport for communities like Over Wyre and Fleetwood so that people can switch to public transport. That means rebalancing our transport spending towards the North West and bringing back into use disused transport links such as the Fleetwood branch line to give people the chance to use greener alternatives.
a devastating effect on a child’s development and society as a whole. We can all play our part in preventing abuse. And we can all help a child who’s experienced abuse to get their life back on track. If you have the time or a bit of spare cash maybe you’d consider volunteering, fundraising or donating to help children who might suffer further without our support. If you work with a charity and would like me to highlight the work you do then please do contact me: Cat.Smith.MP@parliament.uk or call (01253) 490440. I recently visited one of the foodbanks in my constituency. It can’t be a coincidence that the numbers of foodbanks has risen as average incomes have gone down. The latest research shows in-work poverty is rising faster than employment. Many people are trapped in low paid, insecure work and
Harnessing the power of wind and water has huge potential to transform the Lancashire coastline into a true energy coast. Hydro, wind, and solar energy industries have the potential of providing thousands of skilled, highly paid jobs, which will transform the employment prospects for our young people, while providing for our energy needs. During May on my website I highlighted the work of the NSPCC, the charity that supports children who have suffered abuse. Child abuse can take many forms. It can be emotional, physical, sexual or a lack of love and attention through neglect. And it can happen to any child, in any family, in any place or online. Abuse often happens over a period of time, rather than as a one-off event, and can have

Teachers and other educational professionals recently reported a significant increase in the visibility of child poverty in schools and colleges, with many witnessing distressing examples of child deprivation and hunger. A survey of educational professionals by the National Education Union found that 91% believe rising levels of child poverty is having a devastating impact on children’s learning. The Trussell Trust supports a nationwide network of 1,200 food banks. Between April 2017 and March 2018 the food banks in their network provided more than 1.3 million emergency food supplies to people in crisis, a 13% increase on the previous year. Research from the Trussell Trust indicates that more than 14 million people are living in poverty in the UK – including 4.5 million children. I know there are people in Over Wyre experiencing the same problems. If you believe there is a need for a food bank then I’d really like you to get in touch with me and together we can look for solutions.

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE The Front Room
alternative ways may take longer to process.
Patients are set to benefit from our latest innovation surrounding the topic of social prescribing.
Online requests received after 1:00pm will be processed within 24 hours. If you feel your request is urgent, for example if you might need antibiotics for an infection or you have run out of one of your medications and need it immediately, you should inform a member of our reception team so that you can receive the appropriate care.
The NHS Long Term Plan outlines a strong emphasis on social prescribing - helping patients to improve their health and wellbeing by connecting them to community services, e.g. signposting people with dementia to local dementia support groups. This development will undoubtedly increase healthcare opportunities for patients as well as meeting the ever widening needs of the community. At Over Wyre Medical Centre, we have provided a designated community room named ‘The Front Room’ within the Practice which is at the heart of Social Prescribing. We realise that there are a vast amount of services and resources across the Fylde Coast that are not always easily accessible for our patients. The doctors would like to bring these facilities to our doorstep via The Front Room. Social prescribing will work for a wide range of people, including patients with one or more long-term conditions or who are lonely or isolated which affects their well-being. The grand opening took place on Wed 8th May and was a profound success. The opening was well attended by patients, local council, the voluntary sector and charity organisations who all came along to see what the room has to offer. We would like to thank former Manchester United goalkeeper Alex Stepney and Paratriathlete Josh Landmann who are both patients at the Practice who kindly came along to cut the ribbon and open The Front Room to our patient population. Prescription Requests We will endeavour to process all prescriptions we receive on-line before 1:00pm on the day we receive them. Prescriptions requested
Sick Notes If you are too unwell to attend work, you are able to self-certify for seven days. Thereafter, if you are unable to return to work you may need a medical sick note issued by a doctor. If this is for a condition for which you haven’t been seen by one of our healthcare team, you may need to come in for an appointment or speak to a GP or Nurse Practitioner about your condition on the telephone. If you have been under the care of a specialist and just need a continuation of your sick note, for example following an operation, an appointment at the Medical Centre probably won’t be necessary. When requesting a sick note from one of our reception team, it would be very helpful if you could explain what condition you need the note for and how long you require the note. Extended Access Clinics will be available on Sat 8th June and Sat 22nd June 8:00am until 2:15pm. Please do try our extended access service where you can book GP, Nurse and HCA appointments via reception at Preesall. With the support of our fantastic patients, the lovely community spirit that Over Wyre generates and our great clinical team we will together ensure that we continue to meet all our healthcare needs for the next generation and beyond. ST AIDAN’S NEWS We have many exciting things to tell you about from the last half term and also have some amazing things coming up! Firstly our recent trip to London. Mrs Rossall and other teachers had the fantastic opportunity to take 15 pupils to spend four days in London during the Easter break. We all had an amazing time, having visited not only popular sites such as Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square, but additionally spending time at Harry Potter Studios and even seeing the Lion King in the West End! This was a Technology Department trip, so we also went to ‘Bread Ahead’ and made our own pizzas and had a cookery lesson at ‘The Brigade at Baxter Storey’, a restaurant that gives jobs and life changing opportunities to the homeless. It was a real success, and the pupils were just buzzing with excitement. We have recently elected our new Year 11 Head Boy and Head Girl. Many pupils applied for the posts and we had many wonderful applicants. We are proud to announce that Brett Newcombe and Emily Checkley will take on the roles from June. We wish you the best of luck and know you will do the school proud. Speaking of Year 11 - we have the current Year 11 Prom coming up in June at the Village Hotel in Blackpool. This is always a heart-warming experience for parents and teachers, as well as a very memorable event for our Year 11 pupils. Also coming up on Thurs 27th June is the Steve Royle Summer Comedy Night. Tickets are £10, available now and are strictly limited. We are requesting that payment should be made in cash. Over 18’s only, please! The doors will open at 7:00pm for a 7:30pm start. The evening will be hosted by Steve Royle (BBC Radio Lancashire presenter, ‘Phoenix Nights’ and ‘Max and Paddy’) and feature Brendan Riley (observational genius),
Dominic Woodward (cheeky and charming) and Sam Avery (of ‘Learner Parent’ fame). There will be a licensed bar and snacks will be available to purchase. We have now started GCSE exams. After our Year 11s worked so hard over the last five years we are looking forward to seeing their successes. It may be a tough and tiring few weeks, but it will be worth it in the end! Again, we wish you all the best of luck through this defining part of your education. Finally, Imogen Evans in Year 7 has made the decision to cut off a whole 18 inches of her beautiful hair to donate to the Little Princess Trust which provides free real hair wigs to children and young people, up to 24 years, who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions. We are so proud of this very selfless decision. As we are such a busy school, I am sure I will have many more exciting tales for my next report. Until then, keep an eye on our Twitter page @SaintAidansCEHS for any updates. Chloe Butler Media Co-ordinator

New and improved paths and drainage, tree pruning, bulb planting and much more. Thank you everyone for your support so far. There have been a number of complaints recently of anti-social use of the Park. These include litter, dogs off the lead in the main park (and even the fenced children’s area) and dog owners not picking up after their dog.

We are looking for groups or individuals (that we could include in a group) that would be prepared to take on responsibility for one of the planted areas and keep it looking at its best. Many hands make light work so any donation of time however small would be appreciated. Please contact the Parish Council Clerk. STALMINE NEWS (cont) They are Cllr Dianne Booth, of Wardleys Lane, Hambleton, Cllr Andrew Haydock, of Stricklands Lane, Stalmine, Cllr Susan Pelham, of Brick House Lane, Hambleton, and Cllr Terry Williams, also of Brick House Lane, Hambleton. Councillors wish to express their sincere thanks to Ken Jenkinson who served as a councillor for many years before deciding to retire at the May elections. His local knowledge and desire to serve the community will be greatly missed. Litter Bin Puzzle The parish lengthsman has reported that the litter bin at the bowling green car park has in recent weeks regularly been emptied by a person or persons unknown. As the bin needs emptying every two to three days, it is helpful that the rubbish is being taken away, but the council is curious as to the identity of its mystery helper(s). Charity Boost The £500 donation from the organisers of the rally in March has reached the council’s bank account and will be allocated to good causes in due course. For further information contact any councillor (details on the website) or contact the clerk. SSRA (cont) Borough Council’s opposition to the plan and was surprised by the Council’s decision to withdraw its objection on the second day of a scheduled four-day hearing in March. However, the Association is pleased the Planning Inspector took on board concerns we expressed in writing and at the hearing. The Inspector noted Lancashire County Council’s opinion the development would worsen road safety. The Inspector wants improvements works to mitigate the impact of additional traffic on Carr End Lane. The Inspector wants the developer to demonstrate that at least 20% of the houses will be of a design suitable or adaptable for old people. The Association is pleased the Inspector took on board our concerns about the future management of surface water drainage from the site. An agreement will have to be in place before the first house is occupied.
Following expressions of local demand the Association is organising another HeartStart training session planned for the autumn. We hope to see adults and children on the course. Further details will be given once arrangements are finalised. Following representation from the Association in conjunction with the Parish Council Lancashire CC have been busy in the area trimming hedges and verges. Work is progressing on the £1.9 million road improvement scheme for the A588, the second most dangerous A road in Britain. We are working with Lancashire County Councillor John Shedwick and our MP Ben Wallace to maximise the benefits of the scheme. This involves improvements to the running surface of the road, rumble strips in unlit areas and average speed cameras. Finally, we have written again to Phil Durnell, Head of Lancashire CC Highways, about the resurfacing of Lynwood Drive. Cllr Shedwick is also following up on this for us. Despite sending them copies of their emails and letters to us we are still waiting for a reply. Do you have time to ‘adopt’ a Stalmine public flower bed or pot near your home? Watering and weeding. If so, contact SSRA committee member and Parish Councillor Andy Haydock. Next Meetings Our next two meetings are on Wed 5th June and Wed 3rd July, 7:00pm at the Seven Stars.
