OVER WYRE ART SOCIETY I hope you have been enjoying the summer with the lovely weather. Our group spent many happy afternoons painting the local views outside. We have painted the bluebell woods at Calder Vale, the canal at Galgate, the dock at Glasson and the River Wyre, to name a few. During the summer break we have also organised art projects for children at Stanah Country Park and Knott End Library. In August our paintings went on display at the Solaris Centre on Blackpool Promenade. There is still time to come and see them as it has been extended through September. Lots of different paintings to see and a great dog friendly cafe! We will soon be meeting again at St. Bernard’s Church Hall, Hackensall Road Knott End every Tuesday afternoon. DO NOT GIVE US OUR DAILY BREAD Here’s the bad news: Sorry folks but the game is up for eating bread. ALL bread, never mind the ‘I only eat wholemeal’ nonsense. Here’s the good news: You can freely eat butter, cream, grass fed meats, cheese, vegetables galore smothered in melted butter and seasoned to perfection! Yum. I touched upon dairy and fat last month so I will not go into much detail except to say that cholesterol protects you from dementia and Alzheimers disease – that’s enough to make you choke up and throw away those awful statins I hope! Back to the bad news – bread and cereals, pastas, biscuits and cakes etc quite simply cause your brain to become inflamed. Yes, your brain is on fire! And basing your diet on these foods as your staple diet causes rises in blood sugar which

actually make your brain shrink and contribute to neurological diseases and diabetes. Within this bad news there is hope – many people live in fear of developing Alzheimers or dementia – but we now know that turning your back on this food and increasing your intake of good fats and proteins will mean you are massively loading the dice in your favour. Nevermind the idea of looking for a cure for these diseases – your behaviour will mean you will not need a cure because you are ensuring it will not develop in the first place. And if you do not believe me get hold of a wonderful book called ‘Grain Brain’ by Dr David Perlmutter that concisely explains all the evidence to show we need to turn our back on all these cereals and grains. A tiny amount of grain is no big deal but I’m afraid the modern westerner eats it for breakfast, lunch and with their evening meal in some form or another and it is this that is causing devastating effects on your body and nervous system and brain. It is also worth noting that if you have depression, ADHD, OCD or any number of other mental health issues there is also very good evidence to show that removing gluten from your diet can make a profound difference. Even if you have been shown to be able to tolerate gluten it seems it doesn’t do much good for any of us. You can also begin to help the problems associated with these disorders by eating fermented foods every day such as kefir and sauer kraut. Take a regular probiotic such as pro-cognitiv by Nature’s Aid (it has specific good bacteria and vitamins that aid mental health) and ensuring you have a regular intake of cannabinoids from high quality full spectrum plant extract CBD products. KNOTT END LIBRARY September Events Author Talks Fri 7th Sept & Fri 21st Sept. We like to think that at Knott End Library we try and offer something for everyone. The SCART Club Summer Reading Challenge for junior readers has been incredibly popular with children and parents alike, so please keep that momentum going when the new school year starts and keep on reading! Our range of activities for grown-ups are also very much appreciated by your community so if you haven’t paid us a visit, what are you waiting for? This September we are really happy to be hosting not one but two author talks at the Library. Firstly on Fri 7th Sept at 2:00pm we welcome Knott End’s very own Angela Norris who will be launching her latest book – ‘Ferry Tales’.

For those of you unaware of ‘Ferry Tales’, Angela has curated a myriad of memories and anecdotes about the Fleetwood to Knott End ferry service from over the years and put them into a unique collection of stories that will delight and entertain all that have used this much-loved and much-valued service. Angela plus special guests will talk about the book and hope that you too will join us to talk about your own memories of the ferry. Early arrival is advised at this event as at the launch of Angela’s last book – ‘Dancing to the Beat of the Tide’ – we had to leave people standing as there weren’t enough chairs to go round! On Fri 21st Sept at 12 noon we welcome thriller writer Ian McFadyen who will be talking about the latest book in his ‘DCI Carmichael’ series – ‘The Steampunk Murder’ Liverpool born and Lancashire bred, Ian’s writing uses fictionalised versions of Wyre places as settings. ‘The Steampunk Murder doesn’t break with this vision and uses The Esplanade as a setting for something altogether quite gruesome. Ian will be here to talk about this book and the others in the ‘DCI Carmichael’ series and will take questions from the audience about his craft and inspirations. As with most (if not all) of our events, both of the above are completely free to attend and refreshments will be served. Feeling frazzled after summer? Then try our free Mindfulness taster sessions, Tues 4th Sept and Tues 11th Sept, 2:00 - 4:00pm. This is a free taster course over two sessions for people living with pain and illness or simply stressed out with the ebb and flow of life. You will learn what mindfulness involves, learn breathing and body awareness and

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES

Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?

Dr Finlay Sutton

If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.

Brenda’s Testimonial

Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

Cardiac Risk in the Young

Enjoy an hour’s health walk around Hambleton with riverside paths. Local lanes and ginnels with views of boats, creek and gardens.

These past few weeks have seen Team Matt and friends on tour! From accompanying the very knowledgeable John Waite on captivating walks around the historical parts of Catterall, to the fun of Garstang’s first Scarecrow Festival and from the thirst quenching ‘Owd Nell’s’ Cider Festival at Bilsborrow to the intriguing clues and beautiful country lanes of Nateby, Winmarleigh, Forton and Dolphinholme for the Twilight Treasure Hunt we’ve certainly been out and about raising awareness and funds for CRY.

Join us at the Shovels Inn car park, Green Meadow Lane, FY6 9AL. Afterwards we enjoy refreshments and a natter. CRY (cont) health of young people. We have been absolutely bowled over by the generosity the fund has been shown and cannot find the words to thank you all enough, but it truly is very much appreciated. Every week in the UK twelve apparently fit and healthy young people die suddenly from an undiagnosed heart condition. As with our beloved and much missed son Matthew, in 80% of instances there will have been no signs or symptoms and although screening will not identify all those at risk (no screening is fool proof), in Italy where screening is mandatory for all young people engaged in organised sport, the incidence of young sudden cardiac death has been reduced by 89%. This is why we feel offering these ECG tests is so vitally important. So our work continues with two events in September.

On Sun 16th Sept you’ll find us at the Kepple Lane Fun Day, with a children’s tombola, pick a daisy game and a lost Koala! Sat 22nd Sept will be our final market stall of the year, just outside Garstang’s Market Hall from 9:00am – 3:00pm, with lots of fabulous bargains to be had. OVER WYRE COMMUNITY CHOIR

After a very warm and sunny summer break rehearsals will resume on Thurs 13th Sept at 7:15pm for a 7:30pm start. We will be working towards our Christmas Concert which will be held in December. This season we have a new rehearsal venue. We will be meeting in St Oswald’s Church Hall, where we usually perform our Spring concerts. We would be happy to welcome any new members wishing to join us. You do not have to audition or be able to read music! All you need to bring is an enjoyment of singing as part of a group. Our Community Choir is steadily growing

and gaining in confidence under the expert leadership of our Musical Director Stephen Boyd. However, more voices would widen our range and choices of music, particularly with regard to our male voice section. So, any of you gentlemen living Over Wyre, we need your voices! Of course, ladies are very welcome too! We do now have several younger members and hope that more will join us this season. To become a true Community Choir we need to reflect the age ranges of the public we wish to sing for. Singing together is fun, good for your health and a great way to make new friends, so what are you waiting for? For further information about joining the Choir, or becoming a Patron please contact Kevin Willman (01253) 810928, Rosemary Costello (01253) 813837 or myself. Jenny Blyth (01253) 391341

CALLING OVER WYRE GROUPS We are Hambleton Over 60’s Friendship Club and until recently our members have enjoyed twice monthly trips out at a very reasonable price, courtesy of a local minibus company which has now sadly closed. We have been searching for ways to get back the trips that have added so much quality to our members’ lives and in the process we have met with our local Parish and Wyre Borough Councillors who have been very supportive. Wyre Council Chief Executive Gary Payne has promised that he will do his best to look into finding suitable funding and resources for us if we can prove there is enough regular need in the Over Wyre area for a council supported minibus. If you are involved in a group, of any age, that would benefit from the use of a minibus on a regular basis, please get in touch with me

and hopefully together we can build a strong enough case to convince Mr Payne to help us further. Linda Wright 07432 797 949 Lindaw35@hotmail.com

DISRESPECT NOBODY An Anti Bullying Campaign On Sun 23rd Sept at 2:00pm St Luke’s Church, Winmarleigh have invited Charlie Baguley to speak on the vital issue of bullying and online bullying in particular. Charlie is 15 years old and is an International Youth Ambassador for the Childnet’s Project deShame. This is a project supported by the Home Office which aims to increase reporting of online sexual harassment among young people and improve the way different sectors co-operate in preventing and responding to such damaging behaviour. Our own local UClan (University of Central Lancashire) is also one of the major collaborative partners in this project. Charlie became involved in this work after witnessing the aftermath of sexting, online sexual harassment and similar types of behaviour - including supporting a close friend who had been a victim of such behaviour. As a consequence of this he applied to the Home Office to become an Ambassador for Childnet’s campaign and after a rigorous interview and selection process he was selected for the role. This is a rare opportunity to hear an informed young man talk on a subject that is negatively affecting many of our young people and something that we should try to protect them from and eradicate. This talk will be of interest to people of

AUSTIN AND PALEY WEEKEND Dolphinholme Dolphinholme is that lovely village many people come to for cycle rides, walks, a visit to the Fleece Inn, to see friends or to pass through en route to the Trough of Bowland. St Mark’s Church was built and consecrated in the late 19th century. It is a beautiful spot and makes for a perfect setting for photographs. It celebrates 120 years in 2019. Building up to this celebration, we are planning a number of special events. There will be leaflets detailing our forthcoming programme available when you visit our lovely place of worship. The first of these events is a ‘Celebration of Austin and Paley’ at St Mark’s Church. Austin and Paley, Architects, were the foremost designers / architects of buildings in and around Lancaster. Their legacy apart from St Mark’s includes; The RLI hospital, Ravenglass Station, Morecambe Promenade Station, Royal Albert Infirmary, Lancaster Priory, Militia

Barracks, Town Hall, The Gregson, Ryelands House extensions and many more. The variety of buildings included hotels, hospitals, halls and many churches remain for us today as solid and beautiful reminders of the Victorian era. We hope to emphasise some of this great legacy at St Mark’s on the weekend of Sat 29th & Sun 30th Sept this year. THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Over Wyre Branch Again I am beginning my Focus entry on a sad note as on 10th August we bade a sad farewell to one of our long standing members – Eve Haslam. Eve was a very active member providing many anecdotes at Branch meetings on where the best places to eat out were and/or where the best afternoon teas and scones were to be had. She, and her late husband Albert, were the Over Wyre Poppy Appeal Organisers for many years and Eve also assisted in counting the Poppy Appeal money, bagging it ready to be taken to the Bank. Eve you will be sorely missed. I must apologise to those Branch members who went to attend the August Branch meeting which was cancelled as a mark of

respect for Eve. Those members on email were informed and I thought that I had contacted those who are not, but obviously not. Therefore again, my apologies. The Great Pilgrimage 90 A decade after the end of WW1, the British Legion (as it was then known) organised for veterans and war widows to visit the battlefields of the Somme and Ypres before marching to the Menin Gate in Ypres on 8th August 1928. Exactly 90 years later in August, thousands of Legion representatives recreated the 1928 Battlefields Pilgrimage and visited the same battlefields. On Wed 8th Aug they paraded their Branch Standard and a wreath along the same route Mr Greens Veg box green book 1_4 page.pdf to the Menin Gate for the One Hundred Days ceremony to commemorate the last 100 days

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION (cont) of WW1 and represented an entire generation that served while defending their country. I was honoured to be given the duty of carrying the Lancashire Royal British Legion County Wreath, and so off I went from Sun 5th Aug to Thurs 9th Aug. We visited Ypres to see the Museum in the Cloth Hall which was completely flattened during the 1st World War but rebuilt exactly as it had originally been and who could resist climbing the 233 steps to the top of the Belfry. A visit to the Menin Gate and a look at the thousands of names carved on the various walls and plaques was awe inspiring and unforgettable. Next stop was the Tyne Cot War Graves Cemetery (WGC) – the largest WGC in the World. Very, very sad to see so many headstones of those who paid the ultimate

sacrifice in the cause of peace. I defy anyone who visits there not to be moved by the sheer scale of the WGC. Over the two days we also visited the Passchendale Museum, Vimy Ridge, the Ulster Tower to commemorate those Irishmen who gave their lives, Theipval Memorial, Messines, Delville Wood and three other well visited areas of renown and infamy from the 1st World War. In the fields farmers still unearth many pieces of shrapnel and bones of Commonwealth soldiers as well as German soldiers along with the skeletons of horses and animals killed and left to rot in the mud of the battlefields. The culmination of the event was the Parade through Ypres of over 1000 Standards and 1000 wreath bearers followed by a service of remembrance. A sight that, I believe, will never be repeated. These were long, hard

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION (cont) and tiring days but worthwhile it most certainly was and I feel proud to have been chosen to carry the Lancashire County Wreath. Just a pity that the TV coverage of such a monumental occasion did not warrant a bit more than 20 seconds in a news programme. Branch Matters The Branch membership is now only 16. If the Branch is to survive then it needs an influx of new blood, preferably under the age of 55. It is not necessary to have served in the Armed Forces to be a member of TRBL. The next meeting of the Branch will be held on Thurs 13th Sept in the Preesall Youth Activities Centre at 7:00pm. Anyone interested in becoming a member or wanting more information on the work of The Royal British Legion should contact either myself or the Contact Centre on 0808 802 8080.

A Special Plea Our Branch Standard Bearer is due to go into hospital for back surgery in September and will not be available to carry the Standard on Remembrance Sunday or when required on other occasions. Anyone over the age of 16 who would like to fill this post please contact me. Full training will be given on how to carry a Standard properly. Bill Burn 07715 784 128

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE Message from the Practice Manager I hope everyone has enjoyed the fantastic summer weather and indeed, I hope we have a bit more sunshine to come. However, it is that time of year where we are now preparing for our Flu Campaign. The clinical evidence available to GP practices from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) is clear that for the 2018-19 winter season, GP practices should offer: •

The adjuvanted trivalent vaccine (aTIV) for all 65s and over. Given aTIV was only licensed for use in the UK in August 2017, this was not an option for the 2017/18 season. However the JCVI advice is that this is now the best option for 2018/19 for all aged 65s and over.

The quadrivalent vaccine (QIV) for 18 to 65 year olds at risk, including pregnant women. Public Health England and JCVI have advised that QIV is the best option for 18 - 65 atrisk groups in the 2018/19 season. It is also used for the childhood programme.

Over Wyre Medical Centre has gone to great depths reviewing and even changing our initial Flu vaccine order for the 201819 season to ensure these are in line with the evidence-based clinical review. The dates for our Flu Clinics for over 65’s are: Sat 29th Sept, Sat 6th Oct and Sat13th Oct. The Flu Clinics for 18 to 65 year olds at risk will commence on Mon 24th Sept in clinics. Patients are kindly asked to phone mid-

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE (cont) morning to book in for a Flu Clinic so that the initial calls received first thing in the morning are free for emergency patients. Macmillan Support

Our aim is to bring this service closer to our patients in order that they can access as much support as they feel they need at their own GP surgery.

Starting this October, the surgery will be working closely with the Macmillan team from the Windmill Unit at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals to begin to bridge the gap in support for patients with cancer who live in our rural area.

Macmillan have started a new initiative to bring this support out to rural communities and two of our staff are in the process of becoming ‘Macmillan Neighbours’ to work closely with Macmillan and help deliver this service.

Macmillan workers can provide a wealth of advice, support and guidance to those with a current or past cancer diagnosis and their family and can be an important part of enhancing a patient journey and recovery through the cancer pathway.

As a result, from October Macmillan will be working in the surgery creating an information hub just off the reception area and will be holding a drop in session, initially once a month.

In the past this has been based in the Windmill Unit at Blackpool which many patients may feel they are unable to access.

This informal session is open to anybody dealing with cancer who wishes to attend and can help with topics such as benefits, financial grants, buddying and health needs assessments.

COMPUTER ADVICE If you have ever bought anything from Currys/ PC World or Dixons/Carphone Warehouse and given them your email address etc then you have probably received an email recently about a security breach in 2017 which resulted in potentially 10 million customer records being accessed by some bad guys. This is not the first company to have admitted to having such a problem, and I doubt it will Joan Bailey 07528 173891 be the last. The most important message in the email is that no payment card or bank www.ladybirdcomputing.co.uk account details were taken, which is good info@ladybirdcomputing.co.uk Located in Pilling covering the Over Wyre area news. However, there was plenty of other information lost (name, address, phone number, date of birth and email address) so this leaves all of us affected at risk of attention from scammers eager to take advantage of the problems. What can you do? I can only repeat the advice from Dixons Carphone (the owners of Currys etc) to be careful. You may well receive phone calls pretending to be from a company who sound convincing because they know a lot about you – but always be very wary when anyone rings you out of the blue. Wherever possible, end the call and then wait a little while before ringing the company back on a number NOT given by the caller eg. from an existing bill or the company website etc. You should never reveal any full passwords, login details or account numbers to anybody who calls you unless you are absolutely sure that they are genuine. There is also likely to be an increase in fake emails and text messages. If you receive any emails from any organisation, asking you to provide information or login to your account to do something – NEVER use a link in the email to get to your account. Instead, access your account by opening your web browser and using any shortcut/ favourite / bookmark etc or whatever you would normally do to get to the account if you

COMPUTER ADVICE (cont) hadn’t received the email. And if you are still unsure, don’t hesitate to ring the organisation to check (using a telephone number found on your own paperwork or the Experienced Counsellor offering support with: official website, not one in the email). Even though no bank details were stolen (according to the email), it’s still also sensible to keep a close eye on your accounts to make sure there is no suspicious activity. If you do think you have been a victim of fraud you should report it to Action Fraud, the UK’s national fraud and internet crime reporting centre, on 03001 232 040. As ever if you have any questions or concerns about computer security etc then please do get in touch. Joan Bailey 07528 173 891

BEN WALLACE MP I do hope you have had a good summer and have been able to take advantage of the sun. I was pleased to see that the hosepipe ban was not put in place after all. The Parliamentary Recess gives me the opportunity to travel around the constituency and this is when I really discover the issues affecting constituents. Virgin Trains have now confirmed to me that the reason they have not increased the number of direct Poulton to London trains is because the platform is not long enough for their 9 and 11 car Pendolino trains to stop. I am told the trains cannot use selective door opening technology as the station and some of the trains are not fitted with the equipment required. I am incensed at this as the platform length has only recently been reduced – clearly a short-sighted and ill-researched decision which disadvantages my constituents. I am making robust representations to Network Rail seeking the reinstatement of the platform.

Full details of how passengers can claim this compensation can be found at www. northernrailway.co.uk/compensation Additionally, Northern’s Customer Support team can be reached between 8:00am and 8:00pm Monday to Friday by calling 03332 220 126 or emailing Compmay18@ northernrailway.co.uk. As you know I have been raising concerns about the Blue Badge Scheme in Lancashire. I welcome the Government’s recent decision to extend the Blue Badge Scheme to those with hidden disabilities. I know this will make life that little bit easier for those with autism and mental health conditions and their families and/or carers. Please see link below for more information. www.gov.uk/government/news/peoplewith-hidden-disabilities-to-benefit-fromblue-badges

The rail services in general from Poulton to Preston and beyond are running better now after the works and I will be keeping a close eye on this. I know many of you were badly affected by the change in timetables and works in general. I have been highlighting this to Network Rail and I will be continuing to talk to all rail operators about services in the future. Northern has announced details of the additional compensation which will be offered to season ticket holders. Passengers who commute on certain routes will be able to claim compensation up to the equivalent of a month’s travel, which is over and above the existing delay repay scheme.

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) Slow broadband speeds especially in rural areas has been a concern to many. I have been dealing with many cases and I am increasingly loosing patience with BT on the roll out of Broadband in these areas. Rural businesses rely on the internet to enable them to grow and prosper. With this in mind, I am asking Lancashire County Council to step in and help in areas that BT consider are commercially unviable and I have written to the Minister to ask that any subsidy support in the future should be aimed at community led projects that are delivering better speeds and fibre direct to people’s doors. BT consider are commercially unviable.

I reminded them that throughout the planning process I raised concerns about the damage this brine would have on the delicate ecosystem and that recently I have been contacted by constituents who have expressed similar concerns.

I have recently written to the Environment Agency and Natural England about concerns in relation to Halite’s plans to excavate the salt caverns using high pressure water and to then release the brine water produced into Morecambe Bay.

I continue to meet residents at my advice surgeries covering a wide range of issues. Please remember if you would like to attend one the most effective way to contact me is by e-mail, with a brief description of the issues you wish to raise and your contact

The Environment Agency has acknowledged the growing unease around the project and have sought to assure me that appropriate measures have been put in place and will continue to be taken to ensure that there is minimum impact on the marine environment. This will be an on-going issue and I aim to ensure that the work of Halite is monitored robustly.

Entry can be made on line through the club website but runners can enter on the day for an extra £2. This is the second of our annual races, the final one being the Myerscough 10mile on Sun 2nd Dec at Myerscough College. There will be further groups next year but if anyone can already run/walk 5k Jonathan is happy to lead a group on a short run when the club meets on Tuesday evenings. As

Having spoken to residents of the numerous holiday parks and residential park homes we have in our constituency I’ve become increasingly concerned about the confusion over ownership

As a result I’ve written to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government and Wyre Borough Council seeking clarification. Park homes are a unique form of home ownership. The park home owner owns the park home but not the ground it’s located on and the home isn’t physically attached to the ground. There are many different types of licensed sites on which mobile homes can be located.

This can lead to some confusion and, at times, problems for home owners, as different laws apply to different types of sites. The park site owner must have planning permission and a site licence from the local authority. This site licence will state whether the site is a holiday site or fully residential. In some instances the licence may allow both permanent and holiday homes. Many buyers have unwittingly bought homes as a permanent abode only to find out later that they can only live in it for a limited period of the year – it may state on the agreement for example that they can only live in it for ten or eleven months of the year. Any occupation which doesn’t follow the licence conditions is a breach of contract and the repercussions can be serious. The Local Authority can take enforcement

CAT SMITH MP (cont) action against the site owner. Alternatively the site owner can seek to recover the pitch, if a home owner is occupying the site as their main residence, instead of as a holiday home. Holiday homes are not protected by park homes legislation such as The Caravan Sites Act 1968, The Mobile Homes Act 1983 and The Mobile Homes Act 2013. As a result occupiers don’t have the same rights or recourse to the law as those on permanent residential sites. More importantly, the occupier doesn’t have the same security of tenure. Some of my constituents have been asked to provide a family member’s address as their ‘permanent address’ to hide the reality of their living in a ‘holiday’ home and not a permanent home. However, they say, the Council is aware that most people are living there full time and have recently begun charging Council Tax to all permanent residents. This has resulted in many constituents being charged twice for services such as waste collection, as they pay site fees for the owners to undertake waste collection and keep the park in order. The constituents accept that they can be charged Council Tax as permanent residents, but they feel it should be charged at a reduced rate, due to the majority of services being provided by the site owners. Officers from Lancashire

Constabulary have now confirmed with me the changes they intend to make. In Over Wyre, rather than having neighbourhood policing officers based out of Garstang until 10:00pm there will now be response officers based in Garstang 24 hours of the day. The Police service says this means officers will be able to attend Preesall, Pilling and Knott End quicker than officers being brought from Fleetwood and Lancaster if a 999 call is made after 10:00pm. All four of the Police Community Support Officers (PCSO’s) are staying in Over Wyre. In addition there will be a separate dedicated team monitoring crime trends – if there is a spike in a particular area they will be deployed to investigate this rather than taking up the resources of the PCSO’s. I can’t believe the summer is nearly over and children across the constituency are about to

CAT SMITH MP (cont) go back to school. My little boy Eli is now eight weeks old and as all parents will appreciate, his arrival has turned our lives upside down! He’s already been out with me meeting and chatting to people about local and national issues and I’m looking forward to bringing him to Over Wyre in the near future. I hope for parents that the transition from summer holidays to ‘back to school’ goes smoothly and the autumn term is a happy one for all our youngsters. Cat Smith MP

This month we received a donation of two bags of items to use for the backpacks from Mary in Preesall, who got in touch after reading one of my previous articles – thank you Mary! It’s a continuous project so please think of us if you have any school backpacks that are no longer needed. Flipflops, small tubes of toothpaste, pens, and pencil sharpeners are also always welcome. These can help to provide some of the very poor children in Africa and India with all the things needed to attend school. Thank you for your support. Please drop off your used backpacks or other items at The Mustard Seed Café, Park Hill Road (opposite the Wheat Sheaf Pub). They are open Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10:00am to 2:00pm. SOROPTIMISTS (cont) “John could be called one of the lucky ones. At just 9 years old he has been forced to flee his home and left disabled by a land mine. He now lives with his mother in a camp. They are among almost 2 million people in South Sudan who have had to flee in terror from this hellish war, to find relative safety in other parts of the country.

Take a Look at What We Do www.sigarstang.org.uk www.facebook.com/ SoroptimistsGarstang www.twitter.com/GarstangSoropt Muriel Burnham-Airey (01995) 606604

John is lucky because he attends school. Fewer than one in three primary-age children do so, making it the country with the highest percentage of children in the world who are out of school. And yet we know that only in the classroom can peace be born and hope of a better future survive.

WOW WALKERS

Hunger is perhaps the greatest reason why so many children are being robbed of an education. John can go to school because, like 20,000 other children in the Lakes State, he eats Mary’s Meals each day. A plate of rice and beans – that’s what hope looks like for these children. And the faithful serving of that food is a remarkable feat, amid the terror and chaos.

We car share and take turns leading walks. We travel to walks in Lancashire, Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales.

Wednesday Over Wyre Walkers Wednesday Over Wyre Walkers are a group of retired and semi retired walkers. Walks are arranged for all abilities.

Sue Davies (01253) 702866 / 07773 735 777 E-mail sue.siouxcountry@btinternet.com

The men and women who oversee the food deliveries are heroic, walking up to 10km to some schools when the rainy season is closing roads, to ensure that children are fed – and while doing so, they risk their lives. John says that when he grows up he wants to be a doctor so he can help others with disabilities. And so, for now, hope remains that he and his friends might know peace and the fulfilment of dreams.” Back to Work September means back to the main business, with the next meeting being on Wed 12th Sept. We meet twice a month at the Garstang Hotel and Golf Club 7:30pm, on the second and fourth Wednesday. Interested ladies from throughout the Over Wyre and Garstang district are always very welcome.

RSPCA Special Appeals Jimmy Jimmy is a senior boy who came into the Centre as his owners were no longer able to give him the care he needed.

Jimmy has a great temperament and likes the company of other dogs on walks but would be better suited to a single dog household with older children where he can enjoy a quiet life and have all the attention. He has so much love to give and will make an excellent family pet and loyal companion. Shelley & Sadie

Upon arrival it was apparent he had serious skin problems which have been treated at the Centre. However he will need lifelong veterinary care so will require a dedicated, understanding owner.

Shelley and Sadie are looking for a new home as they were not receiving adequate care from their previous owner.

He has a gentle nature and enjoys nothing more than cuddles and exploring. Jimmy likes to walk short distances and is well mannered. He is currently walking well on a harness and lead.

Sadie is the more confident of the pair whilst Shelley is more reserved. We don’t think they have had much handling so they need an owner who will spend time building

RSPCA (cont) up their confidence. They are looking to be re-homed together and will need a double tier hutch and a large attached run where they will have plenty of space to exercise and explore. Mushu Can you help us give this misunderstood girl a fresh start in life as she needs someone who really understands her? Mushu arrived at the Centre last December as a young stray clearly lacking in confidence around people, but with her carers she does enjoy strokes. Mushu needs a confident owner ideally experienced in dealing with fearful cats who can read her behaviour as she has recently been returned into the cattery not long after being rehomed into a domestic setting. We think she is ideally better suited to a rural environment so are looking to rehome Mushu as an outdoor only cat where she can have space to roam around freely and have the option to come and go as she pleases. If you have outside space such as a farm, stables or anywhere that would be considered as suitable then please get in contact. A new owner will need to provide Mushu with somewhere safe and warm to live, eat and sleep, including adequate shelter from the weather. They would also be responsible for overseeing her care ensuring that Mushu is kept in a healthy condition and will need to be confined for several weeks before she goes off exploring.

For more information or to arrange a meeting with one of the animals mentioned above, please get in touch. Summer Open Day Success Thank you to all who attended our Open Day in August. The sun stayed shining for us and the event was a great success with a grand total of £700 being made. Thank you also to our team of dedicated volunteers who manned stalls and helped with the afternoon tea. We really couldn’t have done it without you. LIFE AT CARTERS A new school year beckons with the staff returning on Mon 3rd Sept and the children a day later on Tues 4th Sept. We are excited to get started and have some wonderful activities and projects in the planning. Our values for the coming term are Respect, Empathy and Integrity. The focus at the start of the year will be on Empathy, and how we can all support each other. These values form the core of how we act here at Carter’s. We have 29 children starting with us in September with a few more joining us in other year groups across school. We welcome all of them to our happy family and hope that they enjoy learning with us over the next few years. Parents looking for a school place for their little darling in September 2019 have until mid-January to get their application in to the Local Authority.

Our Annual Open Day takes place on Thurs 27th Sept with opportunities to come and see our school in action and talk to children and adults about life at Carter’s. Please contact school to book a time so that we can help you make that really important decision. Brendan Hassett - Headteacher Carter’s Charity Primary School Preesall, Lancs. TROUBLE WITH THE TURKS ‘Brits in the East 1914-1918’ Garstang Library Fri 14th Sept 5:00pm As the Centenary of the Great War draws to a close, we may pause to reflect upon the great events that finally brought peace to Europe in November 1918. However, in doing so, we often overlook the dramatic contribution made by our Servicemen and Women who fought another war against a very different enemy and far away from our European shores. In this illustrated, one hour mini-lecture, local historian Paul G. Smith, author of ‘Garstang’s Great War Heroes’, will tell the story of Germany’s other ally in the First World War - Turkey - and the difficult naval and military campaigns that were directed at the Ottoman Empire between the years 1914 and 1918. British Tommies and their Dominion brothersin-arms from Australia and New Zealand were transported by ship from Britain and India by way of the Suez Canal, to take part in several troublesome campaigns: on the Gallipoli Peninsula, into Turkish Palestine and Syria... and still further East into the parched arid deserts of Mesopotamia. And they proved a desperate strain on British resources.

TROUBLE WITH THE TURKS (cont) As battle raged, our troops encountered a fearsome enemy, known to the men as ‘Johnny Turk’, many strict Muslims, whose celebrated battle cry of ‘Allah! Allah!’ became the torment of the Tommies. The climate was enough of a problem in itself - temperatures of 40 - 45 degrees Celsius in the shade were already causing sickness, malaria and heat-exhaustion among the ranks. For much of the conflict, our war with the Ottoman Empire was difficult, badly planned and downright criminal. The men were badly supported and given scant attention by their European leaders, transfixed by the everpressing events on the Western Front. The result was a terrible death-toll and horrific tales of non-existent medical supplies, lack of artillery, broken logistics and shortages of everything from essential water tanks and river craft. Steeped in controversy, writers and historians are still arguing now whether Britain’s ‘side-show’ in the East was really worth the cost.

GARSTANG UNPLUGGED This month’s gig is on Thurs 20th Sept and features Josienne Clarke and Ben Taylor. They’re one of the most sought after acts in modern English Folk Music.

written by local playwright Michael Neary and is a fitting tribute to the resilience of our ancestors, on the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice in 1918.

Now with a new album of original material to add to their canon of traditional songs, it’s an exciting opportunity to see them at their best. Tickets are £12.50 through our website, on the door or by phone on (01995) 602795. The gig starts at 8:30pm and is at the Kenlis Arms, Ray lane, Barnacre, Garstang, PR3 1GD.

This one is £10 from the Library or on the door.

Sadly, this is the last gig we shall be presenting. The Kenlis Arms has been sold and will be closing at the end of the month. Peter and Rob are retiring to pursue other interests, and thus ‘Unplugged’ will be closing after over thirteen years. Our thanks to everyone who has made all this possible, especially our friends at the ‘Green Book’. There are two other gigs for your diary before we go. Both are at Garstang Library, starting at 7:30pm. On Thurs 13th Sept it’s the turn of Glyn Shipman, with modern folk tales of love, loss, death and disillusionment, monkeys, muons and Match.com. These are finely crafted songs about the weird and wonderful - and the not so weird and far from wonderful. Songs inspired by monkeys, millinery and politics, fizzy pop and particle physics. Glyn has opened for many bands and has been featured on Radio Lancashire and on Saturday Live on Radio 4. He’s a singular talent with word and rhyme. Tickets are £8 from the Library or on the door. And Thurs 1st Nov it’s ‘Far More Grace Than Me’ a presentation in words and music about a local family from 1910 to 1920. It’s

SPEAKERS’

At the first meeting of the new season on Tues 4th Sept we would love to welcome you and give you a flavour of what goes on at Garstang Ladies Speakers’ Club. Members will be speaking on the title ‘Beginnings’. Past experience indicates that this will generate short speeches that will be interesting, stimulating and very often hilarious. There will be no pressure to participate, just watch, listen and enjoy. No qualifications or experience are required to be a member of a Speakers’ Club. Members will tell you that the biggest benefit is a boost in confidence. If that could apply to you in a work or social situation, then take that first step and come along. Garstang Ladies is a very friendly Speakers’ Club which meets in the comfortable surroundings of the Garstang Country Hotel and Golf Club on the first and third Tuesday of each month from September to May. PILLING LANE WI July has been a busy month for our WI. We held a Strawberry Tea and some of us wore Suffragette outfits in honour of the 100 years since women got the vote. We then went on to join the procession in the Preesall and Knott End Gala, again as Suffragettes, (Mary Poppins?) and won first price in the adult fancy dress. We also won the Vivian Taylor cup, so a big thank you to all who went to the trouble of dressing up and joining us on both days.

PILLING LANE WI (cont) On Wed 1st Aug we had a brilliant talk from Dave Astley, who is the son of our Treasurer Janet Astley. He is a member of the Mountain Rescue Team and brought along his two dogs, Jack, who is fully trained, and Tess, a four month old puppy who is being trained to take over when Jack retires. He explained that it takes roughly three years to train a dog to the standard required to go out and look for people who may have hurt themselves, or got lost in woods, mountains and even parks. He is based at Calderdale Mountain Rescue which covers the Lancashire/North Yorkshire border, although he has covered the Peak District and as far away as Wales. FLEETWOOD FLIERS Walking Football The months fly by and we have had some splendid weather to play football. Our Wednesday sessions seem to attract rain free days and thirty plus players. On Thurs 26th July we held a friendly competition for our Over Sixties. This was hampered by an accident on the M6 which delayed the start with some people actually missing it. To give people game time we arranged at short notice a nine-a-side game. All that participated had a great time. If anyone of any ability is interested in joining any of our sessions we welcome beginners as well as the more seasoned players. We are still running a Ladies Only session on Tuesday evenings between 7:00pm - 8:00pm in the cages at Poolfoot Farm sports complex. Again any abilities are more than welcome. Our Men’s sessions are on Monday evenings from 7:00pm - 8:00pm also in the cages, Wednesdays from 12:30pm - 2:00pm and Fridays 5:00pm - 6:00pm on the open pitches. Anyone interested please turn up on Wednesdays or contact the web site for further information. www.fleetwoodwalkingfooty.co.uk www.@fleetwoodwalkingfooty.co.uk George Greenall (01253)825206

MEMORY BOX I am looking at putting together a Memory Box filled with all kinds of local memorabilia which can be used to stimulate nostalgic conversation in Care Homes, Social Events, small gatherings at the Library etc. If you have any little items of local historical interest that you would be willing to either donate or lend, such as (but by no means limited to) Dividend or Ration Books, Milk Tokens, stamps, old coinage, any old Cooperative or even United Co-op stuff, please let me know. Or, if you have any queries about this idea - please get in touch. Cathy Davies (01253) 811094

SSRA Stalmine with Staynall Residents Assoc Great news! Lancashire County Council has successfully applied for a Government grant to introduce safety measures on the whole of the A588, the main road cutting through our Over Wyre villages. £1.9 million. One year to plan and one year to implement. County Councillor John Shedwick and Ben Wallace MP have been instrumental in achieving this for us and have regularly liaised with Stalmine / Staynall Residents Association along the way. Our sincere thanks go to them for their support and success on behalf of local residents. The next SSRA meeting is on Wed 5th Sept 7:00pm at the Seven Stars in Stalmine. Open to all. For further information on any SSRA details please view our Facebook page or Stalmine Chat or contact Pauline Andrews 07808 058 097, Ann Ralph 07713 852 639, Barry Walsh 07528 031 944 or Peter Swarbrick (01253) 702675.

STALMINE PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Crossing Setback The campaign for a pedestrian crossing over the main road in Stalmine has suffered another blow, with the County Council turning down the proposal. MP Ben Wallace, who supported the Parish Council’s fight for a crossing between the Seven Stars and the shop, received confirmation that the project will not go ahead. Limited funds, the unsuitability of the road layout and the relatively low injury and collision rate were cited as the reasons by the County’s Head of Highways. Shelter Mix-up Residents will probably have noticed that Stalmine has a new bus shelter on Stricklands

STALMINE PARISH COUNCIL (cont) Lane. Unfortunately, the supplier installed it in the wrong place, at the junction with Back Lane rather than with Moss Side Lane. The company that supplied the shelter has now offered to provide another at the intended location, rather than risk damage to the new shelter by attempting to move it. Plants Plea The Parish Council is sad to report that Stalmine’s extra lengthsman, who looks after plants and flowerbeds, has indicated he is to stand down. Separately, any business or individual interested in sponsoring/looking after a flowerbed or floral display is asked to contact any councillor or the clerk. Woodland Survey Wyre Council’s Tree Officer conducted a survey of Stalmine’s wood and has confirmed that there is no need for any imminent tree work. He will produce a full report on the wood, including any woodland management recommendations by the end of August. Date and Time of Next Meeting Tues 11th Sept at 7:00pm. PREESALL TOWN COUNCIL Remembrance Plans Preparations are continuing for our special event to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. A beacon is to be lit in our community on Sun 11th Nov, one of 1,000 across the nation, to commemorate the centenary of the guns falling silent and to remember those who were killed or wounded. Its location will be announced soon. Road Closures Road closure documentation for the annual Remembrance Ceremony has been approved by the County Council and is now with Wyre Council for finalisation of the arrangements in due course. The same applies for the switch-on of the festive lights in Preesall and Knott End, which will be held on Sat 1st December. Separately, more ideas or suggestions from

the public on making this festive season particularly memorable will be gratefully received by the Clerk or Cllr Reilly. Lottery Scheme The Town Council has been notified of Wyre Council’s plan to introduce a weekly lottery, with prizes of up to £25,000. It is expected that 60% of the money raised from the £1 tickets will go to good causes in the borough, with none of the proceeds being kept by the Borough Council. Tickets will be available to people living outside Wyre. Residents and individuals involved with good causes in Wyre can have their say on this proposal via Wyre’s website.
