RSPCA Special Appeals Ozzy Ozzy is a rabbit who has found himself on the lookout for a new home after being found as a stray. He has an independent nature and much prefers all four legs on the ground. He enjoys his food and loves digging in his enrichment boxes. We think Ozzy would benefit greatly from an owner who has time to socialise with him and make him more comfortable around people. He needs a large double tier hutch and a large attached run/fully secure garden where he will have plenty of space to exercise

RSPCA (cont) Reuben Reuben was initially picked up as an injured stray after we think he was hit by a car. X-rays showed he had a fractured pelvis and a broken tail. His pelvis has healed over time with strict cage rest and pain relief but his tail had to be amputated. However he has adjusted well and it doesn’t seem to bother him. At first, Reuben was quite nervous and withdrawn but he has since settled down and has come out of his shell showing himself to be a sweet, friendly and affectionate cat. He can still be slightly shy and a bit nervous at times but is making great progress with his confidence. He is looking for a patient owner who will help

KNOTT END LIBRARY October Events
Understanding Poetry
September saw two author events and you wonderful people turning out in numbers to support us. The Angela Norris ‘Ferry Tales’ launch saw a remarkable seventy people pack the Library to hear Angela and share their own memories of the Fleetwood – Knott End ferry service over the years.
Thurs 4th Oct – Thurs 15th Nov 10:00am12:00pm we will be running this six week course but there will be no class on Thurs 25th Oct.
A big thank you from all the staff at Knott End Library for your continued support. With that support in mind, on Thurs 11th Oct at 11:00am we will be holding a Friends of Knott End Library Coffee Morning where you can find out more about how you can support this valuable community resource. Anyone who might be interested is invited for refreshments and to discuss what happens next and how you can help your local Library push onwards.
Delivered by our partners at Lancashire Adult Learning, this free course will help you read and enjoy poetry with an increased understanding of poetic techniques and traditions. Poetry might seem daunting and a bit ‘highfalutin’ to some but this course will make you see what an impact it has had on society and you’ll be able to impress folks with your new knowledge afterwards. Booking essential. Pop in to register your name. Hospital Records of the Fylde Coast Mon 8th Oct 2:00pm A guest speaker from Lancashire Archives will present a fascinating talk on how medical records can assist in researching your family tree. The talk is free. All are welcome. Get Online Week W/C Mon 15th Oct During this week staff and volunteers will be available to introduce you to the often daunting experience of going online and searching the World Wide Web from the comfort of a chair. We can show how you can write a CV and then upload it to aid your job search. Relax and download e-books from our everexpanding Digital Library. We will do our best to answer your digital needs. Dates for our Regular Events Over Wyre Family & Historical Society Mon 1st Oct 10:00am - 12:00noon. The Family History group will be meeting at the Library. New members welcome. Knott Knit End Natter Crochet and Needlecraft every Monday 10:00am-12:00pm. Crochet at the Library.

HAMBLETON IN BLOOM Where Have All The Flowers Gone? It is with great regret that the six members of Hambleton in Bloom and Best Kept Village (ladies with an average age approaching 80) have decided to call it a day. Some have been involved for thirty years but have no choice as with very little help from residents or others, we are unable to maintain the standards we have set. If any younger residents would like to take over, we would of course pass on our knowledge with respect to general maintenance and organising events. Unless some residents are prepared to take on the responsibilities then there will be no floral or associated activities to the detriment of the village. Please give it some serious thought. It’s your village and if you wish to become involved please provide details the Clerk to the Parish Council, Yvonne Walton (01253) 828861/07703 773 785. The Hambleton Bloomers

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES
Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?
Dr Finlay Sutton
If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.
Brenda’s Testimonial
Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

Her talk began before the outbreak of the war when a working class income above £1 a week was considered to be above the poverty line. £1 could provide a family with an acceptable diet. Many Lancashire men were employed in the farming industry which relied heavily on manual labour. The women would work in the mills where they could earn up to 30/- a week. War was declared on 4th August 1914. At that time 60% of the UK food supplies were imported. The Government insisted that there were ample food supplies but this did not prevent panic buying and a huge increase in prices.

OVER WYRE GARDENING (cont) ‘Voluntary rationing’ was promoted with the Government asking the public to eat less, especially bread. Between 1914 and 1916 the cost of staple items increased by 60%. By 1916 the Government decided that the country must become self sufficient in food and that 3 million additional acres must be ploughed to produce food. One of the problems for the farming industry was the lack of manpower and this led to the creation of the Women’s Land Army in 1917 and to the idea that farming needed some mechanisation. In 1917 6000 tractors were purchased from the USA at a cost of £33 million. Many of the lessons learnt in regard to keeping the nation fed were implemented immediately at the start of WW2. The next meeting will be on Mon 15th Oct when Matthew Smith from Brighter Blooms
Nursery in Preston will talk about ‘Tulips Past ‘til Present’. Matthew will be bringing bulbs for sale. The meeting will be held in the Church Hall, St. Bernard’s Church, Hackensall Road, Knott End at 7:30pm. This will be the final meeting of the 2018 season. Joyce Wilson (01253) 813519
OVER WYRE ART SOCIETY Our first meeting began with a short film showing the making of Derwent pencils. These come in various colours and uses such as pastel drawing, watercolour paintings by adding water with a brush, or charcoal sketching. Skipton Art Shop provided the demonstration, giving everyone the opportunity to have a go. Other art materials were available to purchase which was handy for the new term.

HAMBLETON WI Ian Hendrie came to give us his version of ‘Call my Bluff’ entitled ‘Would I Lie to You?’ He introduced his co-hosts Sue, Carol and Ann (if you could believe their names were real!) Introducing us to some strange words: Drong, Backman’s Warbler, Onager, Kattzen Klavier and Baldrick, each of the girls gave a very convincing explanation of the words, all totally different, then we had to decide which was the true definition and which were false, a random choice seemed to be the only way to win. This was followed by the three ladies and Ian giving an account of an incident or happening in their lives. We then had to say if they were telling porkies or the truth. No one got full marks and only one person received nil points. We all had a good laugh. Chris Seed gave the vote of thanks. Diary Dates Mon 8th Oct:- Monthly Meeting 7:30pm URC Church Hall, Sandy Lane – a talk by the Bowland and Pennine Rescue Team. Competition ‘A Compass’. Fri 19th Oct:- 7:30pm Village Hall, Hambleton WI 80th Birthday Party. Three course meal with wine and dancing afterwards.

THE SEARCH FOR THE PILLING PIGS What would the weather do? That was the question on everyone’s lips on the day of the Treasure walk, The Search for the Pilling Pigs. After weeks of planning and preparation, would the weather get the better of us? Preparations for the event began in August. A plea went out to the residents of Pilling. Will you paint a pig for the treasure hunt? The response took me by surprise and I had to make more wooden pigs as the first batch were quickly snapped up. Everyone wanted to be involved and each had their own idea for a unique decorated pig. Very soon the pigs were returned, brightly decorated and each one individual. Some had village scenes on, others represented local businesses and organisations and those getting involved ranged from 4 months old to over eighty. There was a treasure hunting pirate pig, a glamorous party pig, a floral pig and even a potbellied pig (I bet you
can guess who made that)! The schools, nurseries and uniformed organisations joined in and produced splendid pigs from papier mache. The morning of the treasure hunt was wet but as the weather improved, many families and teams turned out to stroll around the village pig spotting. The walk took them along unfamiliar footpaths, over stiles and bridges, before returning to the New Community Field for refreshments and games. The people’s vote for the best decorated pig was won by Lydia Varley and family with their pig, ‘Meadow’. The whole event had a wonderful sense of community and fun and also raised over £750 for the new heating system for the New Community Hall A massive thank you to everyone who supported the event, either by painting a pig, searching for one or helping to organise the day. If you missed the pigs and want to see them all, they will be on display at Pilling Methodist chapel and Pilling St. Johns Church during their harvest festival weekends. Katrina Bell

Forest School We have been looking at the seasonal changes taking place in our forest using leaves to make dyes to print with. The berries made lots of colours - not always what we expected. On the fire pit we have made cakes and bread and used the fruits from the garden and forest to flavour them. On wet days we have built waterproof shelters as teams to keep dry. The wild flower banking has almost finished flowering, so we have been busy cutting back and gathering seed for next year. Pre-School We have welcomed our new children who have all settled and are busy exploring all the new and exciting activities on offer. Outdoor play is always a favourite, mixing mud, playing in sand or water and running and climbing on

We also have access all day every day to an outdoor area where we can play in the sand shed, mud kitchen, outdoor construction and water area and even have a sensory garden which is full of prehistoric creatures! Oak Class The children in Oak Class have settled extremely quickly. We have a busy half term ahead of us, the highlight of which is our educational visit to Blackpool Zoo. In science we are learning about animals from hot and

cold places which will also link to Geography. We are also looking forward to our first visit of the year to St Oswald’s Church to celebrate Harvest Festival. During Art Week each class will contribute to our RE Project ‘The Big Frieze’ which will show a timeline of the Bible. Willow Class In Willow Class, we are focusing on our topic ‘Sparks Might Fly!’. This includes a Science project on Electricity, where we are training to become Junior Apprentice Electricians! We are then planning to use our new-found skills to create a Design & Technology project for a real-life purpose. Our English begins with Explanation Texts, moving onto Fantasy story writing. We have begun reading ‘James and the Giant Peach’ and will be starting ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’ by Phillip Pullman. We are learning how fireworks are made and practising

FLEETWOOD CHARITY SCHOOL (cont) becoming experts at explaining things. Maple Class Excitingly, we have an extensive range of learning opportunities for the term ahead. This term, the whole school will be painting, drawing, collaging, digital imaging, sculpting and painting as we begin Art Week. The focus is on vocabulary and our Christian values. Elm Class In September, Year 6 went on their residential visit to Lockerbie Manor where they took part in a whole range of outdoor and adventurous activities. This is a great opportunity at the start of the school year to develop teamwork and leadership skills, engage in problemsolving tasks and have lots of fun. Our Year 6 pupils will be hosting a Coffee Morning on Tues 2nd Oct in the school hall, from 10:00am - 11:30am. Everyone is welcome to come along to this event: there
will be a crèche and you are welcome to come and look around our school. All proceeds will go to the Macmillan Cancer Charity Fund. Physical Education and Sports Street Dance classes take place each Wednesday after school for pupils from Reception to Year 6. These classes are open to children from any school, the more the merrier. If you would like to try a class or would like more information, please email: misslaura2008@hotmail.co.uk We are continuing to provide opportunities for the children to try new sports and compete in inter-school competitions. This half term our extra-curricular clubs are Boccia and Tag Rugby. A team of Key Stage 1 children will represent school in a Multi Skills Tournament later this month. We will also compete in a Key Stage 2 Speed Stacking Competition. John Belshire - Headteacher

BEN WALLACE MP Summer seems a distant memory as my children are now well into the school term here in North Lancashire and the darker nights are with us again. Looking out of the window, it is hard to believe the threat of a hosepipe ban loomed over us only a few weeks ago, but that is the British weather. Remembrance Celebrations We are already in October and I start thinking about this year’s Remembrance celebrations and the fact that it has been 100 years since the end of the First World War. It is great to see so many churches, schools, local authorities, businesses, etc throughout the constituency putting on displays and remembering the sacrifice of a generation. o We als ton s in g lo ly supp logs & ets of bags, n firegrates g, kindlin h more m & uc
Armed Forces Having served in the Army myself, (Scots Guards) I am always keen to champion our outstanding Armed Forces which I believe are second to none. I also see the need to support veterans when they leave the services. This is done through the Armed Forces Covenant which all local authorities in Lancashire have signed. The Covenant is a promise by the nation ensuring that those who serve or have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly. With this in mind I was delighted to see recently, the launch of the Lancashire Armed Forces Hub. The hub aims to bring together councils, charities and other organisations who serve the armed forces community in order for them to share best practice and serve the community as effectively as possible.

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) The Hub has been possible thanks to £150,000 of Government funding and is a joint project between Lancashire County Council, UCLAN, Lancashire Care Foundation Trust and Army HQ NW. The new service will be based at the College for Military Veterans and Emergency Services at UCLAN. Poulton to London Rail Service As you will know I am a keen supporter of a direct Poulton to London rail service. I have recently received a reply from Alliance Rail Holdings detailing their intentions for Great North Western Railway to operate a Blackpool to London Euston service. I am delighted to say that Poulton is a key element in the company’s plans. I am continuing to urge Network Rail to reinstate the longer platform lengths to enable longer trains to stop at Poulton.

The main headlines from it were that probiotic supplements do not work. Lazy journalism and headline grabbing words announced that we may as well throw all these supplements in the bin. I delved into the research to see exactly what was being said rather than taking my knowledge from journalists who, it seems more and more these days, are expressing an opinion rather than reporting facts. I found that this research was only carried out on 25 people. This is a tiny group to extrapolate anything major. Not only that but they were 25 healthy people. The fact they were healthy is the key to a major flaw in the research. Why? Because if you are healthy your body should be working

and much more too. This has been ignored and even mocked by mainstream health professionals for decades but not anymore. Enormous research is coming out showing how vital our digestive system is to all aspects of our health.
Our body does not have an “extra healthy” mode for this would be a waste of important resources. Bear in mind that Health is different from fitness - we can get fitter, stronger, faster but we cannot work up more health.
This is why declaring war on bacteria with antibiotics has been, for many people, disastrous with them trapped in a round of chronic infections. I’ve seen countless examples of recurrent cystitis from the immune system damage caused by antibiotics because the cause of such problems is not simply some bacteria going wrong.
Of course if you are ill then you can become healthier and most of the time this can be done with changes in your behaviour rather than getting drugs from the doctor. For over a hundred years we Osteopaths have repeatedly observed and understood that our gut is vital for so many illnesses from our mental health to autoimmune problems
Antibiotics should be last resort medication, not frontline instant use drugs. If you have an infection your body, most of the time, given the right conditions such as rest, wholesome real nutrition (as opposed to take away food and ready meals) and gentle movement

HEALTH ADVICE (cont) where possible, will clear up most infections without any need for drugs. I cannot stress the importance of healthy rest when you are feeling unwell - most of us do not moderate our behaviour, soldiering on at work, taking something to mask the problem such as an anti inflammatory or a paracetamol based remedy. These do not cure us but reduce symptoms so we carry on and this can cause further illness. Our body has some simple methods to cure us and we seem to want to stop it doing so. The basics are: Inflammation - which causes pain and immobility but is busy repairing all the damage too. So if you take an anti -inflammatory you interfere with repair and end up with recurring problems. And did you know the moment you pop one of these your chance of a heart attack increases from between 3050% in the month you have taken it? Fever - which raises our core temperature to kill off the bacteria or virus that is causing a problem. So if you take paracetamol or calpol you suppress this protection and end up getting more illness down the line. Vomiting - which removes something the body doesn’t like. Therefore, taking a drug that stops this means whatever toxic substance was inside you still is! Diarrhoea - which is similar to vomiting and protects us but we have got drugs that suppress this, bung us up and leave us vulnerable to more problems. Modern medicine has created all these amazing drugs that suppress our body’s clever healing reactions. But when was the last time you heard a health professional explain all of this and suggest your body knows what it is doing and will fix you. Doctors used to say their role was to amuse the patient while their body got them better
- sadly it now appears that intervening with medication is first line defence rather than, for most of us, what should be a last resort. Therefore, ensure your immune system functions well by healthy behaviour and yes, if you’ve had health issues or been on antibiotics or eat processed foods, then probiotics have a vital role to play in helping you and I’m sure many of you will testify how they have helped you - they’ve certainly helped me. Some of the best to try are Natures Aid’s new line which are potent and come with extra vitamins and minerals in them such as Prointimum for pregnant women or Pro-cognitiv for our mental well being. Bio Kult and Optima also produce excellent products. Nick Tofalos

CARDIAC RISK in the YOUNG (CRY) The Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund In recent weeks Matt’s Fund hit the headlines when it was established that an astounding £100,000 had been sent to CRY in his memory! A wonderful accomplishment I’m sure you’ll agree and we wish we could personally thank each and every one who has contributed, but with so much support from so many folks that would be an impossibility. There has been a great deal of creativity with numerous, wonderfully diverse activities and fundraisers from sponsored events, treasure hunts, sales, quizzes and discos to race nights, cakes bakes, collections, challenges and chalk drawings to name just a few. There are those who have donned the t-shirt and been a public face for the fund and countless folks who have supported in the background, unseen and unheard, all working together, being pro-active in raising awareness of the fabulous work that CRY do and helping protect the cardiac health of young people. To all who have helped, however you have helped, we thank you. Over the summer months the Garstang Scarecrow Festival with the assistance of the vivacious Team ShazzAnn and Team Y3P have been extremely busy raising an amazing £18,380 which was split between Macmillan in the North West and Matt’s Fund @ CRY. Towers and Gornall also held fundraisers at the local agricultural shows, raising hundreds for several local charities, including CRY and a number of charities, including ourselves, had the opportunity to take part in the Kepple Lane Fun Day in the middle of September what an extraordinary community we live in! No wonder Matt was so proud to be a part of it. Thank you one and all. Oh, and for those of you who are wondering - the Koala and joey were visiting friends in
Perth but now have a new home in Garstang! As autumn arrives the folks at the core of Team Matt have a chance to catch their breath for a week or two (though I know they’ll probably still be beavering away quietly in the background). We are very grateful to friends and family, both near and far, who have stood by our sides from the beginning and who graft and give tirelessly in remembrance of Matthew, and who steadfastly support and promote the work of the fund. Well done Team – you really are truly inspirational – thank you. COMPUTER ADVICE I’m often asked why a computer seems to be running slow, and there’s never a simple answer to this.
Joan Bailey

www.ladybirdcomputing.co.uk info@ladybirdcomputing.co.uk
Sometimes it is a straight forward case of an old machine unable to cope, but even new computers can be slow. Over the years, these boxes have become ever more complex combinations of metal and electronics. They can do so much that they often seem to have a mind of their own – and a temperament to go with it!
When you switch a computer on there are Located in Pilling covering the Over Wyre area a million and one different things suddenly springing to life and demanding to check for updates or run scans. 1. Firstly some very basic checks – has the power come on, does my screen work, have I got a keyboard, how much memory have I got and is it all working? Do I have a hard drive and do I know where the operating system is? Assuming it gets the right answers and finds the operating system, it then hands over control. 2. The operating system (Windows 10 or whatever) starts all the other programs and then checks for Windows updates, tries to install updates, runs clean-up jobs after updates, runs background checks for problems and performs regular tidy-up jobs. 3. Your security/anti-virus package checks for updates, installs updates and runs various scans of the system to make sure that no nasties have snuck in. 4. If you do online banking, there may be another security package which many banks insist you install (Trusteer Rapport) which will also check for updates and do some background checking work when you switch on. 5. Other background programs such as Java, FlashPlayer and Adobe Reader will check for updates and then either

COMPUTER ADVICE (cont) install them automatically or ask for your permission to do so. 6. Programs which you have installed to use yourself will check for updates – eg. iTunes, Google Chrome, Microsoft Experienced Counsellor offering support with: Office, Firefox, Skype, Spotify, printers. Depression, Stress or Anxiety Again sometimes these will get installed Bereavement Couples Counselling automatically and sometimes you will be nagged to do the update. 7. Other programs which you didn’t install yourself and probably haven’t even noticed are there because they came with the computer may also be running in the background and doing things, eg. CyberLink Media Suite 8. Once the computer is running, there will probably be a program from the hardware manufacturer also checking for updates for some of the core components. All of these are the good guys (although you could turn some of the ones in 6. and 7. off if you don’t need them) – if you’ve managed to download a disreputable toolbar or something worse, there may be other less beneficial programs doing stuff behind the scenes. So what to do? Computers need to be switched on regularly, and given plenty of time to complete all their background jobs. Don’t dive in to check your emails as soon as the desktop appears, give it a minute or two to finish getting ready. Shut down completely at the end of the day, don’t just leave it in ‘sleep’ mode all the time. If a program seems to have stuck, wait a little while before trying to cancel as it may just be struggling because of another job running.

CAT SMITH MP At the beginning of the year many constituents contacted me concerned that their planned operations at Blackpool Victoria Hospital were being repeatedly cancelled. Many had been waiting a considerable period of time for joint replacements such as hips and knees. They described being in considerable pain, immobile and unable to leave the house. I’ve written to the Department of Health on a number of occasions asking for an explanation as to why so many elective procedures had to be cancelled and when they would be re-scheduled. I’ve published the Minister’s response on my website. To see it please visit www.catsmith.co.uk/
latest. In the letter, the Government says hospital managers are already planning for next winter. I very much hope therefore that we don’t see another repeat of last year’s crisis and that managers are being given the funding they need to provide a seamless service during a time of year when we know there will be greater demand. At the time of writing it’s been revealed that the number of NHS staff vacancies has increased and the growing nurse shortages risk becoming a national emergency. There were 107,743 vacancies in England at the end of June - 41,722 nursing vacancies and 11,576 unfilled posts for doctors. Independent think tank The King’s Fund said growing nurse shortages are ‘symptomatic of a long-term failure in workforce planning.’

CAT SMITH MP (cont) They say the NHS is heading for another tough winter. They also report that staff shortages have further been exacerbated by the impact of Brexit and immigration policies. NHS Improvement says the rise, the result of increasing demand and high leaving rates, is forecast to continue throughout the financial year. The result of all of this is that we have to employ more temporary staff leading to spiraling costs. Between April and June, NHS trusts spent £805 million on bank staff and an additional £599 million on agency staff. In addition to the staffing crisis, the NHS Improvement Quarterly Monitoring Report has been published confirming the extent of the funding crisis in the NHS – trusts now face an underlying deficit of £4.3bn. On all key performance measures the NHS is struggling to keep up with demand – A&E performance is down and waiting lists are rising. Ahead of the NHS Ten Year Plan this Autumn, Ministers must say how they are going to put NHS finances on an even keel. On a related point its nearly flu season again and it’s really important that everyone eligible should take advantage of the flu jab. The vaccine will be offered to everyone over the age of 65 and eligible adults under the age of 65, including pregnant women and those with long-term health conditions. Children in Year Five will now be offered the vaccine, along with children in Reception to Year Four. The vaccine will eventually be offered to all primary school-aged children. Social workers and frontline healthcare workers are also eligible to receive the vaccine for free. The more of us who take up the opportunity to have the flu jab, the less pressure on the
NHS over the winter months. Boundary Changes It’s been proposed that if the changes go ahead Over Wyre would become part of a new, largely rural constituency starting just south of Lancaster and stretching down to Fulwood, across to Thornton and up to Knott End. Lancaster would join with Morecambe and Fleetwood would join with Blackpool North. Under the plans the number of seats will be reduced to 600 cutting the number of MPs by 50 as we prepare to leave the European Union. The workload of MPs is set to rise after Brexit, with thousands of pieces of important legislation expected to come through Parliament. A significant number of MP’s are set to vote against the changes. We are ready to work with all political parties to agree an

LORD OF BOWLAND LECTURE Bowland Heads Back to the Stone Age This year’s Lord of Bowland Annual Lecture, the 8th since 2010, will take place on the evening of Mon 8th Oct in the wonderful surroundings of Browsholme Hall’s Tithe Barn. Dr Rick Peterson, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), will take Bowlanders back to the Stone Age, with a lecture on the Prehistory of Bowland. Rick is course leader for the BSc (Hons) Archaeology degree. He specialises in the Neolithic and Bronze Age archaeology of Britain, with particular interests in the
archaeology of caves and in pottery. He also teaches later prehistory on many of the fieldwork modules. Each year, between 2011 and 2015, staff and students from UCLan left the campus behind and headed to the hills above Whitewell for their summer fieldwork project. A combination of field surveys, excavations and research during that time uncovered evidence of nomadic hunter-gatherers and early farmers in the Stone Age, along with Bronze Age burial sites and Iron Age settlements. Rick’s lecture will explain how this fieldwork and subsequent studies have helped to expand understanding of Bowland’s prehistory. The event is free to attend but places need to be booked in advance by contacting the Forest of Bowland AONB on 01200 448000

GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS (cont) House Children’s Hospice. This journey has been completed now and our congratulations go to him and all of the others who took part. Fylde Women’s Aid have expressed their gratitude to Garstang Lions Club for organising and delivering recent donations to their central office. There is a continued need for new clothing items (babies, small children or ladies); new toys, new cosmetic or new toiletries. This appeal is ongoing with our collection point being the Resource Centre (the offices of the old Liberal Club) on Bridge Street. Events and Activities There was a good turn out of members helping with the organisation of car parking both at the Garstang Show and also the final major event for this year the Scorton Country and Game Festival. These all proved to be very busy and successful days but in quite varied weather conditions. Several members of the Club accompanied Lion Sandra Perkins who had organised a Canal Cruise for the local Memory Café attendees and helpers on Tues 14th Aug. This was a very successful event with a fish and chip lunch provided plus musical entertainment and several quizes. The Garstang Lions have continued to provide full support and regular funding for this highly sociable group. The Garstang Lions also organised and hosted the Zone Quiz on Fri 28th Sept. Five Clubs in total took part with each one providing one or more teams for this competition. Several Lion members will be assisting at the Old Holly Farm with car parking on Sat 27th Oct for one of their promotional events. It is planned that we have our annual Bowling Evening in October and we hope to use the Flower Bowl (Barton Grange) for this. The Club will be assisting in parking cars for
the popular Myerscough 10 mile run on Sun 2nd Dec. The ever popular Lions Bonfire and Firework Display will be held on Sat 3rd Nov with the lighting of the fire planned for 7:00pm and the spectacular fireworks show to follow. Admission prices are being kept amazingly low at only £4 for adults; £2 for those of school age (up to 16 ) and with those of preschool ages being allowed free entry. If you want to help out or join us then our Lions Club will make you most welcome. Further information is on the web site at www.garstanglions.co.uk You can speak to any member about what we do or just come along to our meeting held on the third Tues of the month in the Royal Oak at 8:00pm. As you will be aware we have begun our Flu Vaccination campaign and we have had a good turn out so far. The clinical evidence available to GP practices from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) is clear that for the 2018-19 winter season, GP practices should offer: •
The adjuvanted trivalent vaccine (aTIV) for all 65s and over. Given aTIV was only licensed for use in the UK in August 2017 this was not an option for the 2017/18 season. However the JCVI advice is that this is now the best option for 2018/19 for all aged 65s and over.
•
The quadrivalent vaccine (QIV) for 18 65 year olds at risk, including pregnant women. Public Health England and JCVI have advised that QIV is the best

GARSTANG SOROPTIMISTS Women Inspiring Action, Transforming Lives Back to Work Our first meeting back after the Summer brought a very enthusiastic young man called Chris who came to tell us all about St John’s Hospice in Lancaster. The work they do to provide care, hope, and support for anyone with a life limiting illness (not just cancer) is amazing. St Johns has an in-patient unit, a day care/ respite centre, advice services and emotional support, and the Hospice at Home team, yet two thirds of their funding is covered by donations and fundraising events ranging from coffee mornings to parachute jumps. They have 480 volunteers who help keep everything running smoothly and Chris was
especially keen to tell us about the first Garstang Charity Ball ‘Winter Wonderland’ which he is organising on Sat 10th Nov at the Garstang Country Hotel and Golf Centre. We’ve already decided to try out the Courtyard Café for our next monthly lunch outing! For further information see www.sjhospice.org. uk Future Plans We have also been discussing recent and future activity for the club – some of the upcoming activities or special dates include a petition to support women tea pickers in India, an Anti-Slavery Awareness weekend in Blackburn in September, Breast Cancer Awareness Month for October, World Food Day on Tues 16th Oct and the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence which starts on Sun 25th Nov. Looks like we’re going to be busy. Conference Time Later this month some of our members will also be attending the annual Federation Conference, which this year takes place in Liverpool. This is always an exciting few days and we are looking forward to some excellent speakers as usual to inspire and enthuse members, as well as taking the opportunity to meet up with old friends and make new ones from around the world. At the end of the conference the current Federation President Sue Biggs will hand over responsibilities to the next one. Sue is virtually a local lass, as she belongs to Burnley Soroptimists, and we have all been very proud to support her during this presidential year. BackPack Project We continue to send off batches of backpacks just as quickly as we can fill them. Currently we are most short of bags, exercise books, toothpaste, pens, pencil sharpeners, and pencil cases.

Our following meetings will be held on Wed 17th & 31st Oct. Our meetings are open to anyone who suffers with eye problems. It is often useful for those whose problems have recently started to develop to be able to speak to someone who may have similar problems to themselves and how they manage to deal with them. We are a small, friendly mixed group and meet alternate Wednesdays from 2:00pm - 4:00pm at St Helen’s Parish Hall, Churchtown. Free transport may be arranged for those living in the Garstang / Catterall areas. For more information please do not hesitate to contact me. Lorna Musgrave (01995) 471319
The first set was nearing it’s end when Gerry, the bass player collapsed and was subsequently taken to hospital. He was checked over and various tests taken. Nothing serious was found to be wrong. The music had been hot and the atmosphere very hot so that was probably a contributory factor. Gerry is fine and was back playing a few days later. Our thanks go to staff of the Tithebarn, patrons and paramedics who assisted Gerry. The Lune Valley Jazz Band will be back to play again at the Tithebarn on Sat 20th Oct so for those of you who missed out on the second set last time and would like to see and hear more of the band please come along and we hope that any excitement will be confined to the music. ST AIDAN’S NEWS It seems quite a while since our last report and so much has happened in the meantime at Saint Aidan’s! The most important news of all were the very good examination results achieved by the
WYRE VIEW OPTICIANS
class of 2018. They had worked so hard and fully deserved their super results. 83% of students got the new Grade 4 or above in English (C grade equivalent) and 80% in Maths. In Science we broke our record for Grade 4/Grade C or above for the second year running.
For all of your Eyecare Needs Barton Square Knott End, FY6 0BN Tel: 01253 812090 wyreviewknottend@btconnect.com The great results were not limited to subjects which everyone takes - in PE, Art and Graphics 40% or more of students got at least Grade 7 - that’s the equivalent of the old Grade A! We wish all of our former students the very best of luck as they embark on the next stage of their education at sixth forms, colleges and in apprenticeships.
68
Very soon after the publication of the results came another exciting publication – our Ofsted report! Two inspectors visited the school in July and we were delighted that they declared that we continued to be a ‘Good’ school. The team highlighted the good academic progress which students make at the school as well as the ‘positive and caring community’ which has been created here. Students’ attendance and behaviour are also praised, and they say that ‘Pupils’ conduct and attitudes to learning are strengths of the school.’ Their report sums up the school by quoting a parent, ‘Saint Aidan’s is a fantastic school…my son has thrived since joining.’

ST AIDAN’S NEWS (cont) At the start of September we welcomed our new Year 7 students as they embarked on their five year journey with us. They seem to have settled in very quickly. Indeed, evidence of how well they have taken to Saint Aidan’s life was the number of new students who acted as tour guides on our Open Evening. Over 300 families came to visit the school as they go through the very important process of choosing their secondary school for next September. Any family who would like to visit the school during our normal working day should ring (01253) 810504 or email anthony-lord@staidans.lancs.uk to book a personal tour. In other news, our Year 10 GCSE PE students visited Tower Wood for a week of strenuous activities whilst we welcomed Webster, a Malawian farmers’ leader, into lessons and a school assembly. Webster had come to thank students for the 1.5 tons of rice we have sold over the last three years as part of the Fairtrade Kilombero Rice Challenge. So much achieved so early in the term – and so much more to look forward to. Andy Smith - Headteacher

Last time we wrote in the Focus, we’d been busy with fires outside and especially with wildfires including Winter Hill. Now is a time of complete change for us, caused by the changing season and the corresponding drop in temperatures. The stormy weather has meant we’ve been to secure a dangerous structure on Knott End seafront and to control several dangerous loose objects. As well as the usual calls to respond to ‘Automatic Fire Alarms’ and assisting North West Ambulance Service with getting access to patients, we’ve had a mixture of other jobs. Many people saw us at the recent attempt to steal a cash machine in Hambleton, there was a leak of diesel from the damaged JCB and our specialist ‘Urban Search and Rescue’ team came from Chorley to advise on the structural integrity of the building.
A ‘Road Traffic Collision’ on Head Dyke meant the Police called us to assist because of the danger of cylinders in the back which could have been damaged in the impact and we extinguished a small fire in Pilling as smoke was affecting visibility on the road. Heating appliances and equipment unused in warmer months are coming out again. We’ve attended two gas leaks, and one suspected carbon monoxide poisoning in the last few weeks. Everyone thinks it won’t happen to them, and whilst its very unlikely, the things you can do to reduce the possibility even further are incredibly simple. Have all gas appliances checked by a Gas Safe engineer every 12 months, or any time additionally if you have any concerns. Electrical appliances and supply have caused 40% of accidental house fires recently. Always check for any damage to the leads
A smoking fuse box in Hambleton had us working with Electricity North West and we went to Lancaster ‘stand-by’ at the station to respond to incidents while colleagues from all over that area were kept busy with a large farm fire near Hornby. A small garden fire in Pilling had almost gone out itself when we arrived and in the same area we went to a tractor trailer and its contents on fire in a field. A horse stuck in a dyke proved a challenge because of the size and shape of the dyke, but specialist support from colleagues in the ‘Large Animal Rescue’ team based at Lancaster and off-road vehicles brought by Morecambe’s crew, a vet and the landowner’s equipment all came together and after a rescue which took several hours, the vet was happy with the condition of the horse.

This is a great opportunity to give us and yourselves a head start if there’s an incident on your farm.
We do a ‘home safety visit’, we record water sources, access for vehicles, things to watch out for and things to protect. It’s an immensely valuable service and it’s free. To be at the top of the list for a visit, just email me on richardholden@lancsfirerescue. org.uk The Police are keen to help too and they have rural specialists who can help and advise on any concerns you have including protecting farm machinery and equipment, poaching, datatagging, signage and your local contacts. Lorraine Ellwood, Lancashire Constabulary’s Rural and Wildlife Coordinator will arrange that on (01772) 413935 or email Lorraine. ellwood@lancashire.pnn.police.uk As it gets wetter, there’s more chance of us assisting with flooding. We’re working closer than ever with Wyre Borough Council and other agencies to ensure the impact of these

PREESALL TOWN COUNCIL Road Repair Delay Resurfacing work on Park Lane in Preesall has been put back until February. Cllr Matthew Salter, who represents Preesall and Knott End on the County Council, told Town Councillors that he would seek assurances there would be no further delay. The length of road covered by the resurfacing has been extended by up to 70 meters. Cllr Salter also reported a successful bid for just under £2million to improve the A588 and sought suggestions. It was indicated that the greatest improvement would be to alter the layout of the junction of Cemetery Lane, Park Lane and Burned House Lane. Bus Route Talks The Town Council is to consider consulting the public on a proposal to re-route the 2c bus via Pilling Lane and Grasmere Road for the benefit of people travelling to the Medical Centre. This follows concerns that a change could be detrimental for those attending events and clinics at St Oswald’s Church. Lengthsman Charge Work by the Town Lengthsman on private land for public safety is to be offered at an hourly rate charged to the landowner. Remedial action will be arranged if landowners decline to engage the Lengthsman’s services or do not do the work themselves. War Memorials Councillors are to decide whether to buy up to two silhouette figures of British soldiers. This stems from suggestions on social media by members of the public who thought this would be a suitable mark of respect. If approved, this would be part of the council’s input into moves to mark the 100th anniversary this November of the end of the First World War. House Renovation A neighbour who requested action on a house in poor repair that is thought to be a health hazard has brought to the Council’s attention

STALMINE PARISH NEWS Bus route change Councillors discussed a proposal that the 2c bus route to Knott End should be diverted off Lancaster Road down Pilling Lane in the interests of those attending the medical centre. While acknowledging the potential benefit, they suggested a similar arrangement to that in Pilling, where a double loop operates, thereby preventing the loss of the service further along Lancaster Road. A new bus shelter has now been erected at the junction of Strickland’s Lane and Moss Side Lane. Dog Exercise Plan A suggestion that the Council establish a dog exercise area similar to that in Hambleton was discounted. Unfortunately, the Council does not hold land that would be suitable and lacks the resources to lease land for that purpose. Tree Work Project A Councillor is to seek information on costs for the most urgent tasks at Stalmine Wood identified in a recent report by Wyre’s Tree Officer. A formal plan of action will be agreed when the financial implications are known. SSRA Stalmine with Staynall Residents Association Lantern Making The annual lantern making for children and parents will hopefully take place this year at the end of November. We are currently seeking a venue but all materials will be supplied as usual and refreshments on sale. On the first Monday of December, children and their families meet up at the Village Hall with their lanterns and parade to the Church for the Christmas Lights switch-on. Open Evening Seven years ago, we set up the Stalmine with Staynall Residents’ Association (SSRA) and held our first Open Evening (with free hotpot) at the Seven Stars. The evening was well attended and really enjoyable. People worked in small groups to discuss village needs. Everyone shared ideas and suggestions and the outcome was a village plan that we sent to the Council, Police and other relevant agencies. Children were consulted at Stalmine and St Aidan’s Schools and the issue of the Stalmine playground was high on their list. We are now planning another Open Evening for residents in January as time and needs have marched on. Places may be limited depending on our venue so look out for posters and notices round the village nearer the time to get your free ticket. Again, we are hoping to supply a hotpot supper plus a bar. Hope to see you there! Christmas Lights Competition Christmas will soon be upon us and we shall again be holding our Christmas Lights Competition. Stalmine with Staynall homes and gardens have had wonderful light displays over the years and again we shall be giving out prizes for 2018. Light up our village to celebrate Christmas and bring joy to all.

Saturday Morning Football Club SMFC is our route into football at Wyre Juniors. Aimed at children from reception to Year 2, our SMFC focuses on having fun, making friends and playing football. We teach basic skills which will enable any child who attends to progress into their age group’s team and start playing matches at Under 7s. Many of the squads we currently have in the local leagues from Under 7s to Under 16s all began at SMFC. Each session is run by highly qualified coaches from AFC Fylde. The children have really enjoyed every session. If your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2, join us on Saturday morning. When the weather is fine we are out on the playing fields at Preesall Park, when it’s a little wet, we go indoors at the Sports Centre. For more information about any team or SMFC please contact Steve Creer (01253) 812392 / 07751 287 238. Volunteers All our teams are run by volunteer coaches and parents. If you are interested in helping out or running a team, please get in touch. We will support you through Your FA Level 1 coaching course which includes first aid and child protection. Without community support all the teams we have would not exist. Even if you do not have a child playing football but you are interested in being involved, Wyre Juniors could be for you!
