18 BAD FATS Are heart problems caused by dairy fats? No. There you go, that was easy wasn’t it? I guarantee you will not clog up your arteries by eating fat from a dairy source. Cream, butter, cheese and any other dairy products categorically do not cause heart disease and do not narrow your arteries. I shall step away from the debate around whether we should be eating dairy for other reasons such as ethics except to point out that for the sake of our environment we should all be consuming far, far less of all animal based products.

There are billions of pounds spent on low fat foods and drinks along with the prescribing of statin drugs. This means there are vested interests in encouraging us to keep up with this behaviour. This despite the fact it may even be causing us more harm than eating full fat products because of the obscene amounts of sugar and weird chemicals contained in these processed approximations of real food. In fact, full fat foods appear to protect us from the risk of a stroke as we get older. What the medics call ‘bad cholesterol’ is now known to have a protective effect against heart disease as we get older. The science behind all this is quite clear and is mentioned in the American Journal of Clinical Medicine, but who wants the facts to get in the way of a good money making scheme? This study showed that people with high levels of ‘bad’ fats were 42% less likely to die from a stroke! This research was done on 3000 volunteers aged 65 and over and crossed a 22 year period. This is as definitive as it gets. So please ditch your weird hybrid ‘spreads’, diet products and fear of fat. We also know that diet drinks actually make people fat! That is because when something sweet hits your taste buds this causes the exact same cascade of effects in your body as if you had eaten sugar. So as you drink your ‘zero’ absurdity of a drink please be aware it has the same effect as drinking the full sugar version. It is one giant con designed to fool you into thinking you’re being healthy. And anyway, since when did grown adults really need to drink sugary or diet sodas? Unless it’s in a gin of course! PILLING’S NEW COMMUNITY FIELD The New Community Field is in great shape in spite of the recent very hot weather. More and more people are using the area for recreation and sport. The football pitches are maintained to a high standard and this is thanks to the dedicated volunteers who turn out each week to mow the grass. The drainage on site has been improved and the pitches are in great condition for the coming season. HAMBLETON GALA Village Life at it’s Best Wow! This year’s Gala was bigger, and hotter, than ever before and what a fabulous day we all had. We would like to thank everyone who supported us, prior to and on the day, and all who attended. It was lovely to see so many people lining the streets of the procession route and then joining us on the Bob Williamson Park for the crowning of Queen Bobbie. An afternoon of fantastic, talented entertainment followed with more people attending this year than last year. With an 80” TV on the gala field (supported by HSSC bar), we had a great, friendly crowd to watch England win their Quarter finals match - village life at it’s best! We had so many entries for our ‘Red White and Blue’ competitions (both gardens and children’s colouring), and the ‘Village Bake Off’ saw some very tasty cakes displayed in

the main marquee for judging too. The U11’s Football Tournament provided lots of healthy, competitive fun for all those involved and spectating! The local community, organisations and businesses have really supported us in putting on this year’s Gala and we really can’t thank you enough. It is very much appreciated and we couldn’t do it without you! The tombola stall was generously supported by the staff and parents of Hambleton Primary Academy, the tea tent was down to the hard work of villagers and groups coming together. To everyone who helped us on the field and marshal the roads (especially Poulton Rotary) to help keep everyone safe - thank you! We must also thank the attending Gala Queens, all of whom looked beautiful with their supporting retinues, and everyone that took part in the procession. We had some brilliant fancy dress entries and decorated floats take part this year. We really do understand how much planning and hard work it takes and are so grateful to you all for supporting the Gala. We hope you all enjoyed the day as much as we did. If you have any feedback or ideas on how we can keep improving this village event then please get in touch and let us know. If you are interested in joining our committee then please come along to our AGM, to be held on Mon 10th Sept, 7:30pm at Hambleton Village Hall. Help us to plan a fabulous day for 2019! For details on competition and raffle winners or to see some of the many pictures from the day please see our Facebook page or contact us at www.hambletongala.co.uk E-mail: commitee@hambletongala.co.uk Graham Potter 07828 401 275

KNOTT END LIBRARY Join The Scart Squad this Summer Attention Parents! Hey Grandparents! Calling all carers! Relieve a little bit of stress over the summer holidays by bringing the kids to Knott End Library to take part in our annual Summer Reading Scheme. After reading Pilling St John’s Headteacher Catherine Wigley’s forthrightly passionate piece about reading in the July edition of the Over Wyre Focus magazine, I’m going to chip in and shout out that reading is a great activity to keep your children happy during the quiet times in the long summer holiday. Children who keep on reading outside school during the summer months have also been shown to improve their literacy levels and perform better when they return to school in the autumn. There are also many fun activities in our

20

Reading Journey tasks that will encourage your child to be more creative and provide opportunities for the whole family to get involved. This year the scheme is called the SCART Club and children will be invited to sign up at any Lancashire Library, for free. SCART Club stands for Science, Culture, Active, Reading and Technology and 11 new characters have been created as members of the club, 10 boys and girls and the club’s mascot Scart Squirrel. Children from 4 years to 12 years old are invited to come and discover these new characters by taking on the challenge at their local Library – Knott End. This summer the challenge is to collect all 5 SCART themes. Each theme has tasks set by our club members, complete two tasks

KNOTT END LIBRARY (cont) to unlock the subject and get the sticker. For each subject one of the tasks must be reading related. As an added task, each sticker contains a symbol. Children will have to identify the first letter of the symbol to unlock the mystery word. Complete three subjects and win a half-way treat of a pencil. Don’t knock it – it’s not just a pencil. Think of it as a tool for enabling your child’s creative potential! By finishing all five, children will gain a bonus sticker to crack the code and be rewarded with a cool prize! Knott End Library will be holding regular events for children through the summer holiday to help them achieve their SCART goals. Visit the Library or our website www. lancashire.gov.uk/libraries for more details.

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES

Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?

Dr Finlay Sutton

If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (Dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - Prosthodontics) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and love changing peoples’ lives. I am fortunate in having one of the worlds best dental technicians working with me in the practice. When it comes to dentures the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible, mirroring original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures.” Dr John Besford, world famous former specialist in prosthodontics said of Finlay: “Together with Rowan Garstang, his accomplished laboratory technician, Finlay is now producing some of the finest denture work - both functionally and aesthetically, in the world. The difference that this is making to his patient’s lives is obvious from the improved contours of their faces and the enhanced sparkle in their eyes by the end of treatment. It is as if Brenda Before their souls have been refreshed.” Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from far and wide, throughout the UK and abroad – he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and regularly teaches other dentists and technicians on the art of making dentures.

Brenda’s Testimonial

Since having my dentures done I have been delighted with the results – and I know how much of a difference they have made because of the comments from all my friends and family who say my smile and face is totally transformed. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I can’t believe how natural they look and how comfortable they are - they have reshaped my jaw and face - it was more than worth doing.

LANCASHIRE FIRE & RESCUE N33 Preesall It’s been a very busy time for your local fire crew here at Preesall. Whilst we’re normally kept fairly busy, we’ve had two weeks with a new record for us of 26 jobs. This includes 2 house fires, 2 car crashes, a fire in commercial premises, a garden on fire, a barn containing 200 tons of hay on fire, the rescue of a cow stuck in a dyke and of course the moorland fire on Winter Hill.

crews on our way home. It’s been fantastic to get more use out of our training and kit, and like every crew in Lancashire, whenever we could help there was someone waiting for it. Throughout the whole of this busy time, the support we’ve received locally and from throughout Lancashire has been brilliant, from the local employers who allowed their staff out of work to play their part, to the support from the community with food and drinks received at our station and at Chorley Training Centre which were a really big help.

Most of these incidents were local, but we’ve also helped out other local stations and responded to incidents in other areas when they’ve been short of crews.

Over such a large and dangerous area, with a constantly and rapidly changing event it was difficult for the service to get supplies to crews, so having them available to take with us made all the difference. Thanks so much from all the crew.

On the moors we’ve worked long shifts, and sometimes we’ve been needed to help other

LANCASHIRE FIRE & RESCUE (cont) as important. The warmer weather brings everyone outside and it’s now we see grass and moorland fires, problems caused by barbecues and water rescues. There’s more information and videos on our website at www.lancsfirerescue.org.uk/ safety/safety-advice with separate areas for ‘barbecues and chimineas’, ‘water safety’ and ‘wildfires’. It takes just a few minutes to look and it might make a difference. The water safety section has a video about James Goodship. It’s particularly useful for anyone more likely to watch a video on their phone than listen to someone. Surprisingly, drowning is the third most common cause of death amongst young people aged between 10 and 18, and those casualties are most likely to be male. It’s particularly important to get this message across now the school holidays have started.

The ‘Preesall Fire 10k’ went really well and we had almost 150 runners take part. Events like this always take time to get established and we hope to increase the number taking part year on year. Thanks to the local businesses that donated prizes and helped towards the money raised, which all went to ‘The Firefighters Charity’. Our Fire Cadets year finishes with the school year, and a fresh batch will start in September, with just a few of this year’s group continuing for further development. In one of this year’s many achievements one of the cadets has just won the Institute of Fire Engineers Under 18 Lecturette final, against cadets from all over Lancashire, Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester and Merseyside. If you’d like to join or get more details please contact sarahholden@ lancsfirerescue.org.uk Our two newest recruits have had a unique first two months, but they’ve already proved themselves to be valuable assets. This job is a big commitment, but it provides an enormous amount of real achievement and value, and the experiences they have will make a real difference to their lives. We still need two more local people to complete our crew, especially if they can be available for call out within 5 minutes of our station during the daytime or on the weekend. All sorts of people are retained firefighters. Everyone has different reasons for joining and gets different things out of it. Details are

on: jobs.lancsfirerescue.org.uk/retainedfirefighters or you can speak to us at the station any Monday night at 6:30pm. Just turn up and ask for Watch Manager Dawson. CM Richard Holden 1685 richardholden@lancsfirerescue.org.uk (01253) 810071

OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE (cont) to fully comply with advice received from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI). The clinical evidence available to GP practices from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) is clear that for the 2018-19 winter season, GP practices should offer: •

The adjuvanted trivalent vaccine (aTIV) for all 65s and over. Given aTIV was only licensed for use in the UK in August 2017, this was not an option for the 2017/18 season. However the JCVI advice is that this is now the best option for 2018/19 for all aged 65s and over.

The quadrivalent vaccine (QIV) for 18 to 65 year olds at risk, including pregnant women. Public Health England and JCVI have advised that QIV is the best option for 18-65 at-risk groups in the 2018/19

season. It is also used for the childhood programme. While doctors are professionally responsible for forming their own clinical judgements on whether a particular individual should receive the flu vaccine due to a variety of other factors, use of these more effective vaccines in the 2018/19 season is clearly in the best interests of patients, particularly given the association of flu with increased mortality. As mentioned above Over Wyre Medical Centre has gone to great depths reviewing and even changing our initial Flu vaccine order for the 2018-19 season to ensure these are in line with the evidence-based clinical view i.e. 65 year olds and over to receive aTIV, and under 65s in at risk groups, including pregnant women, to receive QIV for the 2018-19 flu season. Suppliers have confirmed our order of adjuvanted trivalent vaccine and quadrivalent influenza vaccine.

I know you are free to receive your Flu Vaccination from whichever provider you choose but I strongly advise that if you are 65 and over or 18-65 at risk that you receive your vaccination from Over Wyre Medical Centre where it will be guaranteed you are receiving the correct vaccine for your age group or condition. If you receive the wrong vaccine the evidence based advice is that your protection from influenza could prove ineffective. In the last six months alone we’ve used 258 appointments for cryotherapy for removal of warts or verrucas. That’s two whole weeks’ worth of appointments and this sort of work is increasing each month and is considered to be unsustainable. It is clinical time that would be put to better use treating long term conditions and chronic disease. Most practices don’t offer this at all anymore and numerous studies have concluded that for warts and verrucae using cryotherapy has the same efficacy as using salicylic acid which is now considered to be an ‘over the counter’ treatment by the CCG whereby patients with warts or verrucas probably shouldn’t be seen in surgery at all and should be signposted to go to the pharmacy. Evidence based studies conclude that freezing treatment vary considerably in their results. Many results show it does not have any convincing benefit.

RSPCA Rocco

Lewis Lewis is a black cat who is a loveable boy that needs owners who will give him time and extra support whilst he settles in. On arrival he was very shy and nervous but with time and some confidence building he has really come round and is a different boy. He can be extremely loving, super affectionate and will happily seek attention. He would like nothing more than a warm comfy knee to sit on. He would be best suited to a quieter home with secondary school children and may be able to live with another cat.

Rocco is a loving boy who arrived at the centre due to concerns for his welfare. He had untreated skin problems but is responding very well to medicated baths. He is an energetic boy who is always on the go therefore would benefit from living in an active home. He is very well mannered, nosey on walks and loves the company of other dogs. We feel he may be suited to a multi dog household with a careful introduction. Rocco has a sweet nature but would be better suited to a home with older children (12+) as he can be bouncy and excitable.

MISSING Floyd is a three year old cockatiel who went missing from Garstang on Tues 15th May. He can be a bit feisty as he is quite nervous, but when he is relaxed, he loves tickles, and whistles ‘If You’re Happy and You Know It’ and the ‘Star Wars’ theme!

He is like a slim small grey parrot, with a yellow face and crest and orange cheek patches. He has some white patches on his wings. He also has a leg ring. Floyd may respond to the sound of cockatiel noises e.g. on Youtube, and loves millet seed. We are offering a reward of £300 for his safe return. Possibly he could be some distance away by now. We would be very grateful for any sightings. If you have any information that could help us get him back could you please contact us. Mike & Helen Spencer 07948 727 013

GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS Donations It was agreed to donate £100 to Longridge Hockey Club to allow them to purchase some much needed equipment. Donations were also made in response to individual requests for two Girl Guide members towards their planned trips to Europe adding to the substantial funds that they have already raised themselves through their own initiatives. The Lions have also agreed to sponsor one of our members doing a ‘Coast 2 Coast’ cycle ride on the 24th and 25th of August from Scarborough to Blackpool (a total journey of 145 miles) in aid of Brian House Children’s Hospice The Lions have been very impressed by the

staggering response of the local community and monies given so far to the recent ‘Thumbs up for Charlie’ appeal and have pledged a further sum of money in support. We are still collecting for the Fylde Women’s Aid for distribution to their various centres in the region. So if you have any items to donate of new clothes (babies, small children or ladies), new toys, new cosmetic or new toiletry items then the collection point is the Resource Centre (the offices of the old Liberal Club) on Bridge Street. Events and Activities Three members of our Club have recently repainted and re-stocked our plant troughs in support of Garstang in Bloom and our thanks are extended to them for doing this work. A special home for special people Sea Bank House is a residential home for elderly people who are unable to live independently in their own homes. COMPUTER ADVICE This month’s article is really only vaguely computer-related, but hopefully some of you will still find it useful – Summer Travel Advice, courtesy of my much travelled daughter!

Joan Bailey

07528 173891

www.ladybirdcomputing.co.uk info@ladybirdcomputing.co.uk

If you do any travelling abroad and want to use your bank debit or a credit card, don’t forget to tell them of your plans BEFORE you set off - otherwise you may find that your card is blocked from working once you arrive. If you have an app for the bank on your phone you may be able to use that, but make sure you’ve set it up before you leave.

Located in Pilling covering the Over Wyre area Make sure you know all your email and banking passwords etc. – if the worst should happen and you lose your wallet/handbag whilst away, you don’t want to be stuck unable to notify the bank because you can’t remember the security information. And try not to take any more cards than you really need, there’s no point risking losing all of them unnecessarily. If you use somebody else’s computer to log on to either your bank or emails, please make sure you take the tick out of any ‘remember me’ boxes on the login screen. When you’ve finished, log out of the website properly and then close everything down – and clear out the browser cache as well if you can. Using credit cards overseas can be expensive, with exchange rate costs and card fees. It really does pay to research this thoroughly before you go as some banks charge much less than others – but it takes a bit of advanced planning to get one arranged before your trip. When paying for goods or taking cash from a machine, you are usually offered the choice of paying in the local currency or having them do a conversion to pounds for you. Again, think very carefully about this - it is often cheaper to pay in the local currency and let your own bank back home work out the conversion using better exchange rates. If you are travelling to a country in the

COMPUTER ADVICE (cont) European Union, for most mobile contracts you currently don’t need to worry about exorbitant charges for using your mobile phone if you have a contract with inclusive minutes. You can use the minutes, texts and data in exactly the same way as you would back home. (Unfortunately this will no doubt change once we leave the EU.) However, if you are travelling outside the EU then be very careful – check out what your provider will charge and consider turning data roaming off to prevent any nasty surprise bills. When it comes to buying your holidays or flights online, you should always use a CREDIT card where possible as this gives some extra financial protection (if the transaction was more than £100). With budget airlines in particular, if you want to choose your own seats, pay for meals, or arrange extra baggage then it’s usually best to do this at the time you buy the flight – doing it later can cost much more. And make sure you get the names right as again there will be costs to change them later – they must match exactly what it shows in the passport. You also need to check-in online and potentially print your own boarding passes before setting off to the airport. Some airlines may have a smartphone app which allows you to do it all on your phone, so check in advance. Finally, there are some countries which don’t allow any electrical items in hand luggage – eg. if you are taking kids to Turkey pack some colouring books and pencils as they won’t be able to spend their time playing games on a tablet on the plane. As ever if you have any questions or concerns about computer security etc then please do get in touch. Joan Bailey 07528 173 891

FERRY TALES Book Floats Ferry Memories The history of the Fleetwood to Knott End ferry as seen through the eyes of passengers across several generations is the subject of an engaging new book by local author, Angela Norris. In ‘Ferry Tales’ is gathered the memories of travellers who relied on the ferry service to get to school or work during the 1940s, 50s and 60s to produce a compilation of colourful and often amusing tales. The short journey across the River Wyre was often hair-raising. Passengers faced being buffeted by storm-tossed waves, becoming stranded by the tide on a sandbank or having to be given a piggyback ride across the mussel beds by a burly member of the ferry crew. In its heyday, thousands piled on to the

ferryboats each week, many of them holidaymakers and day trippers attracted to the leafy charms of Knott End and Over Wyre. The book features memories of the trio of ferryboats that reigned during the 1940s and 50s - the Wyresdale, Lunevale and Caldervale. These vessels would operate from early morning until late at night, taking people to work or school. There would be queues stretching the whole length of the ferry slip. Over the last few decades the ferry has faced threats of closure on many occasions. As recently as early 2018, residents in Fleetwood and Over Wyre were worried the service might close after the current ferryboat, the Wyre Rose, was taken out of service for several weeks following contractual wrangles.

ST LUKES CHURCH WINMARLEIGH

There was jubilation on both sides of the river when the vessel resumed sailing on Fri 13th April after a new contract was signed between Wyre Council, Lancashire County Council and operators Wyre Marine Services as part of an eight year plan to keep the service afloat.

St Lukes Church, Winmarleigh will be holding their Harvest Exhibition Sat 15th Sept and Sun 16th Sept.

The fact that the ferry service has managed to survive decades of political turmoil is largely due to public pressure and the stories in the book are a testimony to the level of affection in which the ferry is held. The book will be launched at Knott End Library on Fri 7th Sept at 2:00pm, and at Fleetwood Museum on Thurs 13th Sept at 2:00pm. Angela Norris (01253) 811691 E-mail: angeladnorris@googlemail.com

The theme this year is ‘A Harvest of Good Books’. The Church will be open from 11:00am until 4:00pm on Saturday and from 12 noon until 4:00pm on Sunday. Morning service is at 11:00am and Evensong at 5:00pm on Sunday. There will be a tombola, produce and plant stalls and bric-a-brac, also a raffle. Refreshments will be available throughout both days. The Harvest Supper will be held at Winmarleigh Village Hall on Wed 19th Sept. The speaker will be Winmarleigh born author Catherine Simpson. Tickets available from PCC Members at a cost of £8. Some of the answers were hysterical but a good night was had by all. Our next meeting is on Wed 1st Aug 7:30pm at St Oswald’s Parish Hall, Preesall. BEN WALLACE MP I do hope you are enjoying the summer weather. At the time of writing this article the sun is splitting the sky here in Lancashire. Long may it continue, although hot weather does bring its own risks, so please be careful, if you need advice please go to: www.nhs.uk/live-well/ healthy-body/heatwave-how-to-cope-inhot-weather I have recently met with the Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at Lancashire County Council, County Councillor Keith Iddon. He gave me an update about highways maintenance across the constituency and I am encouraged that many long term issues are being addressed. I have no doubt however that there will remain areas of concern. Please inform your County Councillor if you

do have outstanding issues, as I am sure they will be keen to address your concerns. During the meeting, the on-going issue of bus provision in Over Wyre was discussed and Lancashire County Council continue to talk to Blackpool Transport regarding this. I have recently had the honour of attending John Cross CE Primary School to celebrate their 300th year. I was given a very interesting tour of the school, which has an amazing history. I was fascinated by the fact that in 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie and his army would have marched past the school gates on their way to unsuccessfully attempting to capture London. I would like to thank all involved with the day including staff and pupils who dressed up in period costume. I have said many times how much I enjoy visiting local schools and talking to children

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) about my role as their Member of Parliament. I believe it is extremely important to engage young people in the democratic process. I was, therefore, delighted to be invited recently to Garstang St Thomas’s CE Primary School for a Local Schools conference. This was an opportunity for local School Councils to meet. All schools involved gave excellent presentations about their School Councils and how their work has benefitted school life. I then spoke to the children and took questions. I would like to thank Head Teacher, Mr Blakely, for facilitating this and to all who took part. The NHS continues to be a subject that constituents write to me about often and it is an issue which is close to my own heart. I remain in close contact with all Hospital Trusts and Clinical Commissioning Groups serving our constituency. Most recently I met with the Chief Executive of Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and clinicians to discuss developments at the Trust and how I can support them as a local Member of Parliament. Later this week I am meeting with Dr. Tony Naughton, Clinical Chief Officer at Fylde and Wyre Clinical Commissioning Group. I will be discussing with him the Commissioning Group’s out-of-hours provision and the impact of those arrangements on Over Wyre residents. I will also be raising with him the Commissioning Group’s policy on the prescribing of the Freestyle Libre Device which helps diabetes patients manage their condition. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has approved this device for prescription on the NHS but it is not currently available in our area.

I continue to meet residents at my advice surgeries to discuss a wide range of issues. Please remember if you would like to attend one of my surgeries, the most effective way to contact me is by email, with a brief description of the issues you wish to raise and your contact details. It is worth bearing in mind that I can often offer assistance without the need for a meeting. National issues are filling my mailbag at the moment. Please remember I am here to represent you and your views are important to me so please keep them coming. If I can be of any assistance to you please ring my Office at the House of Commons on 0207 219 5804 or my Constituency Office on (01995) 672977, email me at wallaceb@ parliament.uk or write to me at The House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA. SOROPTIMISTS Women Inspiring Action, Transforming Lives We couldn’t have asked for better weather for our dog show in July. It was an early start to get the ring set up and the marquees in place but the well-drilled Soroptimist ladies (plus a few husbands and friends) were at Kirkham & Catterall Memorial Hall getting ready for the big day. Inside, the kitchen team were preparing a selection of delicious sandwiches and homemade cakes to be sold to the hungry masses. And then it was time to open the gates and start booking in our many dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds. This is always a fun event, allowing people to come along and show off their best friends

to everyone and hope they walk away with a prize. We’re very lucky to have a competition judge in our club, so we do take it seriously but let’s not forget, there’s always room for pre-loved pooches and those of dubious origins at our event! We held classes for both the serious ‘pedigree’ categories and also for fun – who can resist ‘The Waggiest Tail’? Whatever the dog’s origins and pedigree, there were lots

July has been a very busy month for the Branch and its members with attending and participating in both Hambleton and Preesall and Knott End Galas and Parades. Both were

At the Hambleton Gala the Poppy Appeal made £48.40p. Thanks must go to Dave and Tom, two of our newer Branch members, who manned the stand whilst Jackie and I participated in the Parade. Thank you to the Gala Committee for allowing us to have a stand at the Gala. Preesall and Knott End Gala a long, hot and slow Parade meant that there wasn’t much time left for fund-raising and getting the message over as to what the Royal British Legion uses the money donated to the Poppy Appeal for. We still raised £78.36p for the Poppy Appeal and the prospect of a couple of new members. Thanks must go to the Gala Committee for ensuring that there were water stations along the route and again for letting us have our Gazebo at the Gala. Special thanks to Dave, Roy and Ray for helping to man the stand. The best day that we had our RBL Gazebo at was the Armed Forces day in Blackpool

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION (cont) where we were able to raise £500 for the Poppy Appeal. Now the Over Wyre Branch Poppy Appeal total stands at £6448.94 and we’ve still got until the Sun 30th Sept for more to come in. At the July Branch meeting the members decided that they would give a trial to holding our monthly meetings in the Youth & Community Activity Centre alongside the Preesall playing fields. It was felt that the Centre aforded more privacy to discuss sensitive personal beneficiary welfare matters. It also seemed to be more appropriate to try and utilise a community facility where we might be able to use a locked notice board for Branch/Legion information as well as provide information leaflets etc for the organisations that also use the centre. The next meeting will be on Thurs 9th Aug at the Youth & Community Activity Centre, Preesall at 2:30pm.

place at the Battle of Britain Memorial. Both the Remembrance Sunday Parade, Service and Wreath Laying will take place on the same day. It would seem appropriate that this event takes place in line with the remainder of the country at 11:00am on Sun 11th Nov. There are other events on that day and preliminary notices are around the village and the notice boards giving information on the events and more information will come out as it becomes available. The big change is to the Parade time and Wreath Laying. Don’t forget if you know of a Service or exService person or a member of their family who may be suffering hardship or in need or you would like more information on the Welfare Support schemes or membership please contact either the RBL Contact Centre on 0808 802 8080 or myself. I will also be visiting the area of the Passchendale and Somme battles as well as several of the military museums in the area. However the culmination of the GP90 will be the Remembrance Ceremony where it is estimated that 2500 Legion representatives will march to the Menin Gate to mark the launch of the 100 days offensive followed by the return march and a mass gathering in the market place in Ypres. Can I take this opportunity to thank all the people who offered bottles of water (and beer) to us on our way round and to the Black Bull who gave us bottles of water. It was very much appreciated and definitely needed.

We have been so lucky this year with the weather at all of our outdoor events (except Fleetwood Gala) so let’s hope it continues for our last march of the summer season at 120x65mm Pilling print.pdf 2 Feast. 06/02/2018 15:08 Coffee We had another lovely afternoon in Happy Mount Park and saw some more local faces who had come to Morecambe to support the band. I also need to thank the organisers of Eagland Hill Coffee Feast who very kindly changed the time of their procession so that we could finish in time to watch England play Sweden. Some of the band went along to the Elletsons Arms to watch and the atmosphere was fantastic – we even took our bass drum to rally everyone. August is a fairly quiet month for the band. We tend to have a bit of a break after a very hectic June and July. Please visit our new website at www.pilling-band.com for up-todate information as to what the band are up to and also our facebook page. The band are also really keen to welcome new members young and old so if you play a brass instrument and are interested in joining us please either give me a call on the number below or email me at secretary@pillingband.com The band have some instruments if you don’t have your own so please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We hope you all enjoy the rest of your summer and I really hope that you are all reading this

CALLING OVER WYRE GROUPS Could you use a subsidised minibus on a regular basis? We are Hambleton Over 60’s Friendship Club and until recently our members have enjoyed twice monthly trips out at a very reasonable price, courtesy of a local minibus company which has now sadly closed. We have been searching for ways to get back the trips that have added so much quality to our members’ lives and in the process we have met with our local Parish and Wyre Borough Councillors who have been very supportive. Wyre Council Chief Executive Gary Payne has promised that he will do his best to look into finding suitable funding and resources for us if we can prove there is enough regular need in the Over Wyre area for a council supported minibus.

If you are involved in a group that would benefit from the use of a minibus on a regular basis, get in touch with me and hopefully together we can build a strong enough case to convince Mr Payne to help us further. Linda Wright 07432 797 949 Lindaw35@hotmail.com

Garstang Half Marathon Sun 2nd Sept

Watch this space, but here’s hoping.

The 13 miles covered do include some flat bits and only one serious (but short!) hill - however we don’t claim it to be a flat PB course! It does however go through some of our lovely local countryside and the marshals are always cheerful – even if it rains! It is quite a popular race and we hope for a good entry – around 200 last year.

The next SSRA meeting is on Wed 5th Sept at 7:00pm in the Seven Stars. For further information on any SSRA details please view our Facebook page or Stalmine Chat or contact Pauline Andrews 07808 058 097, Ann Ralph 07713 852 639, Barry Walsh 07528 031 944 or Peter Swarbrick (01253) 702675.

Garstang Running Club members are preparing for their annual half marathon which takes place on Sun 2nd Sept. It will start outside The Royal Oak at 10:30am and follows an undulating route taking in parts of Catterall, Claughton, Barnacre, Scorton and Cabus before heading back into Garstang.

Race Headquarters is at the clubhouse by the football pitch at Garstang Sports Club.

GARSTANG RUNNING CLUB Refreshment will be served from 9:00am. Entry is £14 for attached runners and £16 if not in a registered running club. Entry can be made on line through the club website but runners can enter on the day for an extra £2. All finishers will receive a bespoke medal featuring the Market Cross and a goody bag. There will be cash prizes for the first three male/female runners and the first in each male vet category from V40 to V75(+) and female vet category from FV35 to FV70(+). This is the second of our annual races, the final one being the Myerscough 10mile on Sun 2nd Dec at Myerscough College. The club is enjoying a successful year with some members getting into the first three places or first in their vet category. Of course racing is a minor activity for most members who either never race or do so only

occasionally. However recently a few newish runners entered their first race at the Forton 5k Supper Run. This followed the latest ‘Couch to 5k’ sessions organised and led by Jonathan Hewitt. Six of the group ran the race so they are no longer ‘couchers’ but 5k-ers! They expected to come last in the race but they were well ahead! Well done to them. We hope they continue to run. There will be further groups next year but if anyone can already run/walk 5k Jonathan is happy to lead a group on a short run when the club meets on Tuesday evenings. As usual members meet in the Sports & Social carpark to leave at 7:00pm. All welcome! JOHN PARKINSON Los Angeles’ Mysterious Architect Wyre Council is looking for information on Los Angeles’ most iconic architect, John Parkinson, originally from Scorton in Wyre.

and was confident enough to call himself an architect from that moment on. Stephen Gee, author of ‘Iconic Vision: John Parkinson, Architect of Los Angeles’, commented: ‘John Parkinson helped define Los Angeles as a city that embraced the future. The iconic buildings he designed define the city and are known around the world’. Parkinson’s legacy includes the city’s first skyscraper, the first luxury hotel, the Homer Laughlin Building (now home to the Grand Central Market), high-end department store Bullocks Wilshire, the Memorial Coliseum, which hosted the 1932 and 1984 Olympics, and Los Angeles’ City Hall. If you know anything of Parkinson’s early life in Wyre, please get in touch by contacting communications@wyre.gov.uk Wyre Borough Council

John Parkinson was the man that designed the new-era Los Angeles as we know it today. Featured in Hollywood movies and iconic moments in history, his buildings are still standing tall. Although born in Scorton, very little is known about the architect’s life in England before he moved to America, except that he was the son of a millworker and began his career working as a builder’s apprentice, taking night classes at the Bolton Mechanics Institute. He then moved to Winnipeg, Canada, for a fresh start and found a humble job of building fences. He returned briefly to England but was soon back in Napa, California, where he worked as a sawmill foreman and built his own home. Impressed by the work, his landlord put him in touch with a local bank who were looking for someone to design an addition to their building. Parkinson won the commission

CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG (CRY) Annual Twilight Treasure Hunt Sat 11th Aug. Meet at Garstang Medical Centre, PR3 1PB. Registration for this very popular annual event for all ages takes place between 4:30pm and 5:30pm. Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund Late June saw Sarah and I invited to Garstang Golf and Country House hotel where we were presented with a cheque for a terrific £750 from Garstang Inner Wheel. This was the culmination of their year of fundraising towards local CRY screenings. The kindness of the community does not end there. Mark and Marion at Best Wishes ran a lovely ‘Guess the Name of the Bear’ game, raising £50. The cute bear’s name turned out to be Posh and it was won by Janet Grundy. With the long hot days of summer well and truly here the weather for the first of Mr John Waite’s strolls around the fascinating industrial heritage sites we have in Catterall could not have been better. It was glorious for the convivial summer concerts kindly hosted by Choir 1 too.

You will need one vehicle and driver and at least one passenger to solve the clues and answer the questions, but the more the merrier! £5 per person, which includes light refreshments at Cobble Hey Gardens, Claughton, at the end of the hunt. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to get there, the clues will lead you to it! For further information about the Treasure Hunt contact Sarah 07941 985 364, Paula 07785 106 976 Facebook ‘The Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund –CRY’ or Email paulahez.ph@gmail.com Paula Hesmondhalgh

These evenings were a fabulous show case both of their talents, and those of their guests Marion and Ivan Gaughan, and Louise Coupe. The events helped to spread the word about the work of Matt’s Fund at CRY and raised a wonderful £950. On behalf of the families that can have their young people tested through the kindness and unstinting generosity of the folks mentioned above and those who helped and supported them, thank you. Whilst we may have sold out of scarecrows at our market stall, which saw £359.70 added to the fund, the Garstang Scarecrow & ‘Owd Nell’s Cider festivals are still to come, so here’s hoping the weather will be good for them too.

LIFE AT CARTERS This year has seen some changes in school. We started the school year with the sad loss of Viv Taylor. She had been a rock for this school and could not do enough o support our work and the development of all our children. That loss has taken some time to get over, but we are determined to continue improving our school with the on-going rationale that everything we do must benefit the children. We completed our whole school topic this term based around ‘The Sea Swallow’. The seven weeks have seen poets and artists come into school, all the children visit coastal locations between Blackpool RNLI and Fleetwood Ferry. The children have discovered so much about their area and the work produced has seen creativity, imagination and skill come to the fore.

We had an exhibition in school sharing our work in pictures, sculptures, words, actions and music. The Mayor of Preesall & Knott End joined us and could not believe the knowledge shown and declared the children’s enthusiasm as infectious! We have 29 children starting with us in September with a few more joining us in other year groups across school. However, no sooner do they start than we start planning for the year after! Parents looking for a school place for their little darling in September 2019 have until mid-January to get their application in to the local authority. Our Annual Open Day takes place on Thurs 27th Sept with the opportunities to come and see school in action and talk to children and adults about life at Carter’s. Full details of this day will be in an advert in the September issue of Focus (the Green Book) coming out at the end of August. Brendan Hassett - Head Teacher

HAMBLETON WI Yasmine Hunter, dressed in a 19th Century outfit of a blue and white striped dress, white apron and a mob cap, came from Grasmere to talk of the world famous Sarah Nelson Gingerbread which is produced fresh 261 days of the year. It’s closed at Christmas time and Good Friday as the building, which is the shop and kitchen producing the products, is still rented from the Church, as it was in 1846 when Sarah Nelson started making and selling the gingerbread at the gate of her cottage home. Her husband was the grave digger at the adjacent St. Oswald’s Church and here William Wordsworth is buried. He originally used to teach the village

Local Policing

The port of Whitehaven from the 17th Century was thriving second only to London. In came rum, sugar and spices which Sarah bought to make her famous gingerbread. She had a family of three children to support as her husband died young, Sarah lived to a ripe old age, pre-deceased by her children. Only the male members of the business are allowed to view this envelope which contains this precious recipe. Diary Dates

CANVASSERS NEEDED IN WYRE Wyre Council is looking for people who would like to earn money carrying out a door-todoor canvass of local households. Canvassers will be working for the Council’s Electoral Registration Office and they are needed to help with the compilation of the annual Register of Electors. The role involves calling on those households who do not return their household forms - a vital part of the democratic process. The amount of payment depends on the area canvassed and full training will be given.

SAINT AIDAN’S NEWS The final month of the school year was a busy time at Saint Aidan’s. Not only did we welcome ten of our local primary schools in for a taster day, but we also had a visit by our friends from Ofsted, some four years and nine months since their previous visit! It was great to show off the school to our two inspectors and we look forward to sharing the main points of their letter to us in next month’s magazine. July also saw Sports Day, happily on one of the milder days of the heatwave, allowing numerous new records to be set on a very dry track. Babbage House came out as winners, a habit they are getting used to! There were numerous events for charity with monies being raised for our brave firefighters, Manchester Children’s Hospital and Happy House Kenya. However, the best fund-raising initiative of the lot saw Year 11 student Henry Werner and four friends shave their heads for Cancer Research in memory of Henry’s mum, Lucy. OVER WYRE GARDENING CLUB At the July meeting we had an interesting and informative talk from Sarah James and Mick Jackson from the Lune Rivers Trust. Twenty years ago Mick Jackson, a keen fisherman, became increasingly concerned about the decline of fish numbers, particularly salmon and sea trout, in the Lune rivers. This was not just the Lune itself but all the becks and rivers which flow into it. To try to do something about this decline he started the Lune Habitat Group which in 2008 became a National Rivers charity now known as the Lune Rivers Trust. The area which they cover starts north of Tebay and ends at Morecambe Bay. The Trust is operated by two and a half fulltime staff and an army of volunteers, many coming from local schools and colleges.

Rotary raises £530 in Charity

The Trust is also involved in a new project to create natural flood management especially after the devastating flooding of 2016. For many of our members this was a subject about which we knew very little and it provided an insight into some of the work that is being done in our area. A reminder to members that we are organising an outing on Thurs 23rd Aug to Fryers Garden Centre at Knutsford and then on to Stonyford Gardens. These gardens were featured on Gardeners’ World. The cost is £20 which includes entry to the gardens. The next meeting will be on Mon 20th Aug and will be the member’s annual Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Show. Joyce Wilson (01253) 8135191
