SITTIN' ON THE DOCK OF THE MAY
Climbing temperatures and mostly dry days make the fifth month of the year one of the best for a getaway weather-wise. With two bank holiday weekends (plus an EXTRA one in 2023 for the Royal Coronation) and a half term, there really is no better reason why you should plan a May cottage holiday in Wales.
Often we’re blessed with a burst of warm sunny days during this month, so make sure to bring your bathers as you’re likely to want to spend most of your time at the beach. Venture to Nolton Haven where the sheltered cave gives superb conditions for a sea swim or drive out to Freshwater West with your surfboard to ride the waves. Spend evenings grilling up a feast on the barbecue, snacking on chips overlooking one of Tenby’s beautiful beaches or enjoy a picnic at the top of Carn Llidi overlooking Whitesands Beach as the sunsets.
Make sure to pack the car with plenty of shorts and t-shirts (and a waterproof mac just to be safe), buckets and spades, plus of course, some sun cream. These are the kind of days you'll remember for a lifetime.
Mix and match between activity-filled days and relaxing leisure time. Walk the Coast Path, try your hand at watersports and visit the county's adventure parks on your adventurous days then factor in time for no-rush picnics, a spot of sunbathing and a scenic slow-paced wander to lesser-travelled beaches and coves.
The attractions of a May holiday don’t stop there. This month is peak puffin season so trips to Skomer Island are highly recommended. if you want to land on the island, booking in advance is essential.
Pembrokeshire also hosts some great events during this month. The Tour of Pembrokeshire sees athletes take to the northwestern roads of Pembrokeshire for a Saturday cycle, with several routes and distances available. Food festivals like Haverfoodfest kick off on a weekend in early May whilst music festivals like the annual Fishguard Folk Festival take place towards the late May holiday.
We celebrate the anniversary of our Pembrokeshire Coast Path this month; personally, we'll take any excuse to get out onto the Coast Path and soak up those epic sea views.
There's also Dylan Day on the 13th, an annual celebration of poet Dylan Thomas. This well-known Welsh author is best known for his radio play, Under Milk Wood, and is famous for his time spent living in Laugharne, just across the border from Pembrokeshire.
