TOP SLEDGING TIPS

Tobogganing with a twist

Hurray for winter! And for all Switzerland newbies out there – it’s time to discover … tobogganing! In Switzerland, sledging or tobogganing is as intense as you want it to be. You can sledge along steep mountain trails or mellow forest trails, you can sledge during the day, but also at night. You can use a classic Davoser wooden sledge or a much faster bob. In some snow parks, you can also slide your way down with an air board or a tube. Check out our top tips and enjoy some well deserved winter fun.

Fun in the snow

Don’t think snow parks are only for freestyle skiers or snowboarders. Most Swiss snow parks also include other fun winter activities for just about everyone.

Our tip:

Snow Park Trübsee in the lovely region of Engelberg. There’s snowtubing and other sliding devices you’ve probably never heard of, like the balancer – a type of snow scooter that looks as uncomfortable as it is fast (naturally, a kids’ favorite) or the Zipfelbob – we’ll let you discover that one on your own. If you’ve never tried snowtubing, now’s the time: it’s an absolute riot and perfectly safe.

Sledging the night away

Night-time tobogganing is an adventure to remember, and there are several trails available all over Switzerland.

Our tip:

Les Diablerets nighttime toboggan run, is one of the longest in the country. The journey from the top of Col de la Croix down through fields and forests to Les Diablerets will be one to remember! This toboggan run is sure not only bring you great sliding fun but also provide an experience unlike any other. Make sure you stop at the Les Mazots restaurant at the top before you begin your descent.

Beyond tobogganing

If you’re up to try something new and give up the traditional and sturdy wooden sledge, there are so many options available: we’ve mentioned snowtubing, balancer and Zipfelbob, but little did you know there are also snow scooters, skibock sledges or airboards.

BASEL CHRISTMAS MARKET

What to see and do

1. Admire the magnificent Christmas tree on Münsterplatz, with ornaments by the well-known decorator Johann Wanner.

2. Walk to the Pfalz to enjoy your mulled wine with an amazing view over the Rhine and the glowing city lights.

3. Visit the fairy-tale forest on the Münsterplatz, where children can enjoy a wide variety of activities, like making candles and torches, forging metal or minting coins, decorate gingerbread, eat campfire bread or drink hot chocolate, ride on the kiddies’ train, bake cookies, pour tin, visit the star workshop, make Christmas floral decorations, have a go on the wheel of fortune, and many others.

4. Enjoy a mulled wine at the 13-meterhigh Christmas pyramid on Barfüsserplatz.

5. Check out the Christmas food mile in Kleinbasel. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, Rheingasse transforms into Adväntsgass. This neighbourhood Christmas market has everything your heart (and stomach) desires, with plenty of surprises in store.

6. Do some Sunday Christmas shopping on 11 and 18 December 2022 from 1.00 to 6.00pm.

Hi Sean! Tell us about yourself. My wife and I moved to Lausanne last year for work after 15 years in Washington, DC. We live in the city center just north of the train station. We’re passionate hikers, so when we’re not working, you’ll most likely find us exploring the trails in Vaud and Valais.

What an excellent way to spend your free time! How did you find out about Carvolution?

When we first got here, we were looking into getting a car for the duration of our stay. It was my wife’s employer

Absolutely! They were super helpful. The Sales Manager explained everything to me without any pressure, and every time I have contacted customer service I found the responses very helpful.

What about your booking process? Did it go smoothly? Yes, it was very easy. I did everything online and ran into no issues

Did you get your car home delivered or did you pick it up in Bannwil?

I chose the first option, delivery to my home in Lausanne. And the car handover process was very smooth as well. The delivery date and time was clearly communicated, and the actual handover of the car took maybe 10 minutes.

What car did you choose and why?

The BMW 118i. My wife and I wanted a small but reliable car that would be just as good at navigating the tiny streets in cities across Europe as it is in climbing up to the good hiking spots in Valais.

Do you also drive abroad with your car?

Yes. We take advantage of the lovely sites in and around Switzerland, as well. We’ve taken the car into Italy a few times (Cinque Terre, Milan, and Lago d’Iseo so far) and also have trips planned to Lyon and Bologna. Of course, the train system is great here, but after the pandemic (and because we also have a dog) it’s wonderful to have a car for travel.

Have you changed your car yet?

No, I’m very happy with it.

What configuration and duration did you choose and why?

The 850 km/month configuration - it covers our needs pretty well and allows room for spontaneous trips. We also chose the 36-month contract - we expect

to live in Lausanne for 3-5 years and, even though it is pretty easy to change your car with Carvolution, we liked the idea of having the same vehicle for most of the time we are here.

Are you using the app?

Yes, quite often! It‘s perfect for tracking the mileage, but the fuel level gauge is probably what I use most. In countries where you need to prepay your fuel –like Italy – it‘s awesome to know exactly how much fuel there is still in your tank.

In what way is life with Carvolution easier?

As an expatriate living abroad, there is a lot to figure out on your own. Some of that is part of the fun of relocating, but I appreciate that Carvolution has made insurance, and car maintenance or tire changes a non-issue. It frees up my time to focus on the fun things and drive carefree wherever I want.

What do you like about Carvolution in particular?

How straightforward it is to secure a car through Carvolution. We wanted a car right away – for trips to the big box stores, for hiking trips (we arrived in springtime). But there are 10,000 other things to do when you first arrive in a country. I don’t even know if I could have legally owned or leased a car before my I received my official residence permit. Zurich

Starting with the end of November through to 24 December, the main train station in Zürich lights up to welcome the largest indoors Christmas market in Europe, Christkindlimarkt Among the various Christmas markets in Zürich, this is the most central. The scent of mulled wine and cinnamon make people skip their connecting trains to stroll around the stalls under the spectacular Christmas tree decorated with thousands of Swarovski crystals. No state subsidies

Individuals pay for health insurance

If you’re coming from the UK, then the fact that you’re entirely responsible for choosing and paying for your health insurance will be a definite surprise. On the plus side though, you do not have to finance all health costs by yourself, thanks to the franchise system.

How does the franchise system work?

To be able to have access to health care in Switzerland, you’ll pay monthly

insurance premiums and also part of the cost of medical treatment or any kind of medical interventions. You will contribute to these costs, together with your health insurer. All your medical invoices must go to your insurer. You will have to pay all of them until you reach your franchise limit. After that limit, it is the insurer who handles the costs. Your share of the payments depends on the type of coverage you have.

The various insurance models

Another difference that boggles the minds of most Europeans is the numerous insurance models. What are the advantages or disadvantages between the GP or the Telmed model? What is the HMO model? Which one could work better for you?

The type of insurance model you choose will determine whether you are free to choose your doctor at any point or limit your choice of medical provider to a pool of doctors determined by the insurance company.

WHAT YOU NEED:

• 1 bottle red wine

• ½ orange, cut into slices

• ½ lemon, cut into slices

• Fresh orange and lemon juice (about ¼ - ½ cup) squeezed from remaining unsliced fruit

• 4tbsp sugar

• 6 cloves – Some recipes also call for allspice, star anise, nutmeg, cardamom, or fresh ginger. What is your favorite variation?

• 2 cinnamon sticks

• Orange or lemon slices to decorate the mugs

• Optional: If you want to kick it up a notch, add a splash (or two!) of kirsch, brandy, rum or triple sec.

WHAT TO DO:

• STEP ONE

Add juice, fruit, sugar and spices to a large saucepan. Simmer until the sugar is dissolved.

• STEP TWO Pour in the wine and optional extra alcohol and heat at medium temperature. Be careful not to let it boil!

• STEP THREE Strain the wine into a bowl. Serve hot, decorated with slices of lemon or orange.

If you’re not strapping on a pair of skis, then there are countless fun and exciting winter activities that won’t involve you being stranded at a café at the bottom of the ski run and stuck behind a book as you sip on hot chocolate all day. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that!).

Go on a winter hike with snowshoes

One of the very best ways to get outdoors in winter is also one of the easiest to do: Snowshoeing. Most ski resorts have marked trails, and snowshoes can be rented at local ski shops. 2. Savour the view

The Salève plateau, called the ‘Balcony of Geneva’, offers extraordinary panoramic views of the area in winter. There’s a cable car on the weekends, but why not hike up instead? Free guided hikes on the Salève are offered all year round every Sunday by the Association Genevoise des Amis du Salève.

What could be more Swiss than curling? Find out where your local curling center is and register for a class.

4. Relax in an outdoor thermal spa

Spas with outdoor thermal pools are one of the best ways to enjoy panoramic views. Family and friends who’ve been skiing can join you there when they get off the slopes. Make an igloo. Feel the sense of accomplishment that comes with building

First of all, can foreigners buy property in Switzerland?

If you have a valid residence B permit, you may acquire property or an existing building for your own use. If you have a C permit for Switzerland, you may buy more than one plot of land for residential use or real estate of any kind without special authorization.

How do mortgages work in

Switzerland?

The bank finances a maximum of 80% of the market value of the property. You have to contribute at least 20% of the purchase price. At least half of that amount must be your own funds and not taken from your employee benefits insurance.

Mortgage financing is divided into a first mortgage and a second mortgage.

The first mortgage can cover up to a maximum of 66% of the purchase price. If you need more financing, then you’ll need to take out a second mortgage.

The second mortgage must be repaid in regular instalments over a maximum of 15 years before you reach the age of 65.

Do you know which funds to use for your 20% contribution?

You’ll be happy to know that the list is generous. The funds you are allowed to use for your 20% can mean savings and securities holdings, pension capital, life insurance, gifts, or inheritance advancements. Presumably, the most significant contribution, will come from your Pillar 2 pension. But then - how can you make sure you still have a decent pension afterwards?

What is affordability and how is it calculated?

Affordability is quite a simple calculation of your income versus the property costs. As a basic rule to estimate affordability, the cost of the property should not exceed one third of the borrower’s gross income. Let’s see what that means more in detail.

In order to guarantee affordability, your total living expenses (mortgage interest, repayments, maintenance, and ancillary costs) should not exceed one-third of your gross income. Many financial institutions use a theoretical rate of 5% to calculate the mortgage interest to ensure that the mortgage would still be affordable if interest rates were to rise. Yearly maintenance and ancillary costs such as utilities, insurance, and minor repairs, are then added to this at a general annual rate of 1% of the market value.
