IRINE GAASBEEK • ACCENTURE

Power woman Irine Gaasbeek is Accenture’s new country managing director Irine Gaasbeek, Accenture

As one of the bigger players in Zuidas, Accenture has a long history in the district. Recently, the global professional services firm for strategy, consulting, technology, digital and operations appointed Irine Gaasbeek as country managing director for the Netherlands. Hello Zuidas talked with Irine about the road that led to this position, what inspires her and why Accenture is a major sponsor of the Zuidas Run, coming up on 28 September. Could you describe your career path up until now?

NEW CANAL IN ZUIDAS With the completion of De Boelegracht, a new canal now runs through Zuidas. This marks the finishing touch on the restructuring of De Boelelaan. As well as making the district more rain-proof, the waterway is also sure to bring more people to the area. Amsterdam, they also questioned the safety of the planned bike routes and asked that these be changed.

MUNICIPAL COUNCIL BACKING Zuidas had tests carried out to assess cycle traffic safety, ground water flows and the suitability of tree species chosen for the park. The experts’ opinion was that the bike routes proposed by Zuidas were safe, but this did not allay the fears of residents and the Cyclists’ Union. Amsterdam’s municipal council backed their arguments and asked Zuidas to modify the routing and reserve more funds for the playground.

ENTHUSIASTIC RESPONSE Armed with the input from local residents, the designer got to work and by the summer of 2017 was able to present a new plan. Responses were almost unanimously enthusiastic. All’s well that ends well! The park should be completed by the end of this year.

GOT A

MINUTE? The Noord/Zuid route is up and running and we couldn’t be more excited! This high-speed link to Amsterdam city centre and on to Amsterdam Noord is big news for Zuidas. During the annual Zuidas Culinary Summerfest, we asked some of the people involved to share their thoughts on the impact of the new metro service. OLIVIER OTTEN, DIRECTOR OF HELLO ZUIDAS ‘At a single stroke, the opening of the Noord/Zuid route puts Zuidas next door to a much wider community. From Central Station you can be in Zuidas in nine minutes flat. That’s the same as what it takes me to cycle from VU to Zuid Station. If you work around Rokin, now you can easily meet for drinks in Zuidas, grab dinner on Ferdinand Bolstraat and then go clubbing on Nes. With the Noord/Zuid route, I’m certain residents of Zuidas will suddenly find themselves very busy hosting their old downtown neighbours! And I predict a run on flats to buy and let in Zuidas.’

JULIE VAN TRAA, PROMOTER AT VEBAN (AMSTERDAM BUSINESS ASSOCIATION) ‘From Dam square to Buikslotermeerplein in seven minutes – the opening of the Noord and Noorderpark metro stations has closed the gap between Amsterdam Noord and the city centre. This creates a wealth of opportunities for Noord-based businesses, especially when the Sixhaven stop outside the ADAM tower opens too. On Friday afternoons, the Zuidas crowd will head over to Tolhuistuin to enjoy a pint before the weekend. That’s the future. The city is getting smaller, and I’m convinced that, as Bas Kok wrote, the Noord district is on the eve of a complete metamorphosis.’

PUBLIC SPACE

PAULINE BUURMA-HAITSMA, MANAGER OF ROKIN BIZ ‘I regularly take the Noord/Zuid route from Zuid Station near my home to Rokin Station. My office is right on Rokin, so I’ve been able to see the metro project unfold all these years. As well as a way to commute to work, this new service also offers a great means to explore the city. For starters, I’m going out to lunch in Zuidas more often and also discovering the more rural areas north of the centre. I expect that other people will feel they can now just as easily visit places like Rokin, to see how beautifully this neighbourhood has evolved. The Noord/Zuid route is set to energize the city in new and surprising ways.’

DAVID VAN TRAA, DIRECTOR OF THE ZUIDAS DISTRICT OFFICE ‘The Noord/Zuid route will improve links between Zuidas and the rest of the city and make Zuidas a more integral part of Amsterdam, both literally and conceptually. Zuidas is rapidly becoming a neighbourhood and a community, where people not only work but also live and hang out. For residents present and future, the new metro service is a positive development. Businesses and organizations in Zuidas will benefit too. Already, one of this location’s biggest trump cards is its excellent connections. It’s close to Schiphol, right off the motorway and has great public transport links. The Noord/Zuid route will only add to that.’

ZUIDAS PROPERTY FRAUD CASE GOING TO COURT Zuidas - Former real estate entrepreneur Harry Muermans from Limburg is facing prosecution in the Klimop affair, a real estate fraud case stretching back to 2007. The Dutch Public Prosecution Service suspects the businessman of forgery and using property firm Universum to launder money during the construction of the Eurocenter complex in Zuidas. Muermans has been charged with forgery of documents and money laundering by the public prosecutor, which is also seeking to recover €1.3 million. It presented the charges in a pretrial hearing at the Court of Roermond. Muermans, meanwhile, has brought multiple proceedings against the state over ongoing delays in the case, late last year serving a summons on the State of the Netherlands for ‘unlawful government acts’.

AMSTERDAM ZUID TO BECOME TERMINUS FOR ALL INTERNATIONAL TRAINS Zuidas - Amsterdam Zuid Station is being expanded with two additional railway tracks and a third platform to accommodate massive growth in train users in the Amsterdam region. On 18 June the central government and Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (AMA) gave the green light to start drafting plans for the two new tracks at Amsterdam Zuid, which call for an investment of approximately €200 million. The additional tracks will allow international high-speed trains, which currently stop at Amsterdam Central Station, to terminate at Amsterdam Zuid Station instead, relieving pressure on Central Station and opening up space for a high-frequency rail service between Schiphol Airport and the city centre.

Sixt is a German family firm that has been in business for over a century. Active in more than 100 countries, Sixt has over 3,500 car rental locations worldwide, including 20 in the Netherlands. One is located in Zuidas, at RAI Amsterdam. Hello Zuidas talked to Sixt Benelux Managing Director Karen van den Boom about changes in the mobillity industry and how Sixt is responding.

‘Flexible mobility can be very effective and has become increasingly popular, especially here in Zuidas’ COORDINATED APPROACH Karen worked in the hotel industry before entering mobillity a few years ago: ‘I’ve been working at Sixt for six years now – two as managing director for the Benelux. Sixt is a successful family firm that has always invested in modernization. And where innovation is concerned, Sixt has optimized every step of the way. That’s our strength and what will keep us strong going forward – I’m certain of that. The Sixt family is very actively involved on many different fronts. When I first came on board, I did

THE SEARCH IS ON Zuidas - The battle for talent is heating up even on the street, with many employers now enlisting their office frontage or company cars to advertise that they are recruiting. In some sectors, broad campaigns are aiming to boost a whole profession’s appeal. The association of Dutch building and infrastructure companies Bouwend Nederland, for instance, is using the slogan ‘You’re going to make it’ on social media to interest the next generation in construction careers. ‘We’re facing a workforce shortage of 55,000 and double that when you add the government’s Climate Agenda. Posters at building sites won’t cut it. We have to innovate and standardize’, said a spokesperson.

FULL-TIME JOBS, NOT QUOTAS, BOOST WOMEN’S TOP JOB PROSPECTS Zuidas - Op-ed | Barbara Baarsma, director of Knowledge Development at Rabobank and University of Amsterdam professor of Economics Anyone who, like me, considers quotas to be a paternalistic shot in the dark to break through the glass ceiling, will of course also have been meticulously monitoring the women’s labour market position. Unfortunately, the picture presented by the past 15 years is anything but rosy. But first, the good news. In 2018, just over six in ten women have jobs. That’s one-half a woman more compared to 2003. This means women are less constrained by motherhood than in the past. Another positive point is that 29% of working women hold management posts, which is a crucial rung on the ladder to the top. Factoring in that 26% of women work full time, this is actually quite good. Among men, the ratio is much lower: 73% work full time, but ‘only’ 71% of managers is male. On all other fronts, however, women’s labour market position does not seem to have improved since 2003, and in some key respects, it got even worse. A smaller share of women work full time, for example, which reduces their chances of making it to the top. Read the full article on www.fd.nl (in Dutch).

JOBSEEKERS NEVER HAD IT SO GOOD: QUARTER MILLION VACANCIES FOR THE CHOOSING Zuidas - Never before have jobseekers in the Netherlands had such a surfeit of options to choose from. Over the past quarter, the number of job vacancies passed the quarter million mark. At the end of June, this number exceeded 251,000, an increase of 16,000, and 2,000 more than the record set at the end of 2007, according to figures published by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) in mid-August.

WANT TO BE RED DRESSED

IN ZUIDAS TOO?

With several prominent locations in Zuidas, The Office Operators (TOO) is experiencing phenomenal growth. No doubt you’ve spied their reps in red dresses at some point in your travels around the district. TOO offers full-service flexible office solutions across the Netherlands. And with the company growing, they’re looking for fresh faces! Could you be the next new member of this enthusiastic team?

MARTJE STATEMA CHIEF OPERATIONS OPERATOR OF THE OFFICE OPERATORS ‘If you want to build a career in the service industry, The Office Operators is the perfect place to do so. More than half of our location managers joined as customer service reps and within just a few years they were trained for the management jobs they hold now. You do have to work for it – that goes without saying – but we offer in-company training for anyone with ambition. If you’re not looking for a high-powered career, but do enjoy a full day of working with and for other people on a great location in Zuidas, TOO offers that as well. We notice that employees particularly value work that’s varied, so we do our best to provide that.’

EVA LEEFTINK CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE AT THE INFINITY LOCATION IN ZUIDAS ‘I’ve been a CSR at The Office Operators for a year and a half now and I am tasked with reception work at our Infinity location every day, and making sure everything is running smoothly at our conference and business centre. In this building, we also work for the Lexence law firm and IMC Trading. It’s a fun job! And TOO is a brilliant employer. I like the fact that they take a personal interest in everyone working within the organization. You’re always a person, never a number. TOO motivates you and there are lots of opportunities for advancement.’

MICHELLE WILLEMSTIJN CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE AT THE NOMAHOUSE LOCATION IN ZUIDAS ‘I’ve only just started at TOO, but I already feel very happy here. The level of service TOO offers customers is not something I’ve ever experienced at other companies and I love being a part of that. With my red dress on I’m one of the faces of TOO, and I’m proud of it! Recently Kraft Heinz moved into NomaHouse, and I’m mainly

SUSTAINABILITY NEWS THE PAPER BATTLE Sometimes, small changes can have a massive impact. Earlier this year, seven organizations in Zuidas jointly cut back their printer use by half a million pages! Part of an energy competition mounted by Green Business Club Zuidas, the objective was to reduce printer and copier use to save on not only paper, but energy as well. Over a period of two months, Accenture, Arcadis, CBRE, Loyens & Loeff, the Zuidas District Office and VU Amsterdam’s faculties of Law and Behavioural & Movement Sciences vied with each other to reduce their printer use as much as possible. The competitive element gave participants an added incentive, which was attested by the tallied 16% reduction in printed pages. Afterwards, the companies got targeted recommendations on additional long-term printer economizations.

MEMO BOARD A CUSTOM-BUILT PIAGGIO FOR THE ZUID FOOD BANK With tighter environmental legislation having taken effect from January 2018, the Amsterdam Zuid Food Bank was no longer allowed to drive its small diesel-powered Piaggio truck around town. Green Business Club Zuidas decided to help out and launched a crowdfunding campaign to buy the Food Bank a new electric set of wheels. When Hello Zuidas also publicized the initiative and CBRE made a generous donation, it didn’t take long to raise the requisite sum. Early this summer, GBC Zuidas finally had the pleasure of presenting a custom-built Piaggio to the Zuid Food Bank. Now, they can resume collecting food from diverse shops, exchanging products with sister organizations across Amsterdam and dropping boxes on customers’ doorsteps when needed. We would like to thank everyone who donated! In November, GBC Zuidas will once again start collecting non-perishable food items for the Amsterdam Zuid Food Bank.
