Helly Juell Hansen applies linseed oil to the outside of his work clothes to provide weather protection. It was simple, functional and a truly meaningful innovation, and is the first step in making garments for the professional worker tailored to his needs. Helly Hansen wins its first award for waterproof gear for fishermen at the Paris Expo. Water proof clothing had never been seen before. The award became the first of many for this innovative organization. Helly Hansen launches kapok life jackets. These safe, comfortable floatation devices represent a real advancement for safety at sea. Helly Hansen patents a sealing technique for seams. MicroWeld™ – the first 100 % waterproof seams are created. Helly Hansen begins work on fibre pile, a new method for knitting the fibres together is patented and the layering system is born. Helly Hansen launches PVC foam with closed cells for use in life jackets. The closed cell foam HH introduced remains the preferred flotation material utilized by all quality flotation device manufacturers to this day over forty years later! LIFA® Technology™ is launched as a revolutionary high performance underwear. Polypropylene will not hold moisture, therefore our body heat pushes the perspiration/moisture through the fabric where it evaporates from the outside of the fabric leaving the fabric next to the skin dry. Dry equals warm. Helly Hansen launches the Survival suit, produced in Moss, Norway. Helly Hansen launches Helly Tech® – a unique coating that simultaneously releases perspiration moisture, while preventing external moisture from penetrating the material. Helly Hansen launches the second generation of LIFA® Stay Dry Technology™ for workwear.

In Spring, 2014 Helly Hansen Workwear will adopt the European style numbers and colours - a departure from the Alphanumeric style numbers. The UPC codes for the products will change to EANs at the same time. Please contact customer service or your sales representative for a complete list of styles, colours and EANS. With a rapid influx of new products, images of CSA and 4” striped versions of garments were not available. h2FloW™ H2FLOW™ allows you to control your body’s temperature. The concept is based on insulation that uses air to provide warmth, and ventilation that lets you control the air flow to cool you down when necessary.

It’s air providing insulation properties, not the “hardwear”. The HH hollowfiber has a core filled with air that insulates. Less expensive compact polypropylene is clearly less effective. HIGH VISIBILITY PROTECTIVE LAYER High Visibility clothing is classified depending on the area of fluorescent colours and the area and quality of the retro reflective materials. It is important to choose clothing with the appropriate classification for your work zone. “Fluorescent” means that the colour has a brightness so it can be more easily observed or detected from distance in mist and fog or conditions with poor visibility at day time. “Retro reflective” means that the light beam from the lights of a car is

reflected back to its origin, and not like in a mirror, so you can be seen in the dark. That’s why we call it 24 h visibility. High visibility clothing should be kept clean in order to provide the original visibility, and replaced when soil, dirt and grease no longer can be washed out of the textile fibers. All our High Visibility products are designed and manufactured to comply with CSA Z96.

If a Helly Hansen product ever fails due to a defect in materials or workmanship we will either repair it without charge or provide a replacement. As your satisfaction is our goal, we will also endeavor to ensure our service matches your expectations. WARRANTY RETURN POLICY If you have questions or need to return defective product please contact the Customer Service Department at 1-866-435-5902 for a Return Authorization number. If the Warranty Department determines, in its sole discretion, that the product has a defect covered under this Warranty, we will repair or replace it within approximately four weeks. BODYWEAR: Wash 2 warm, no hotter than 104 degrees Fahrenheit, with a mild detergent. Hang dry. QC MOT High visibility clothing This standard sets out the requirements for high visibility clothing for road workers in the province of Quebec. This standard defines the background colour,

retroreflection index, width, colour and pattern of the reflective bands.

BC MOT High visibility clothing Traffic Control must wear safety apparel conforming to Class 3 garments meeting both the CSA Z96 standard and the WCB requirement. These garments require a fluorescent contrasting colour stripe that

is a minimum 100 mm (4 in.) in width. The retro-reflective bands of tape used on these garments are at a minimum 50 mm (2 in.) in width.

ANSI-ISEA 107 (2010) High visibility clothing ANSI 107 addresses clothing intended to provide visibility of the wearer under both daytime and nighttime conditions. The standard sets requirements for the minimum area and colour performance of fluorescent background materials for daytime visibility. The standard also sets minimum requirements for reflective striping, which provides nighttime visibility when illuminated by vehicle headlights or other light sources. Three garment classes are established based

on the respective areas of fluorescent background and reflective striping materials. Two levels of photometric performance are also based on the brightness and intensity of the reflected light of the reflective striping. CAN-CGSB 155.20 Workwear for protection against hydrocarbon flash fire This standard states the minimum requirements for performance of workwear worn for protection against hydrocarbon flash fire. This standard establishes performance requirements and test methods for evaluation of components used to construct workwear. Workwear meeting this standard

is intended to provide a degree of protection to the wearer and reduce the severity of injury should a hydrocarbon flash fire occur, For the purpose of this standard “protective” does not mean that a wearer will suffer no burns if exposed to flash fire while wearing workwear meeting this standard.

NFPA 2112 Standard on Flame-Resistant Garments for Protection of Industrial Personnel Against Flash Fire This standard specifies the minimum performance requirements and test methods for flame-resistant fabrics and components and the design and certification requirements for garments for use in areas at risk from flash fires. This standard shall provide minimum requirements for the design, construction, evaluation, and certification

of flame resistant garments for use by industrial personnel, with the intent of not contributing to the burn injury of the wearer, providing a degree of protection to the wearer, and reducing the severity of burn injuries resulting from short-duration thermal exposures or accidental exposure to flash fires.

Standard specification for flame resistant rain gear for protection against flame hazards

Electrical work safety requirements

This specification establishes applicable test methods, minimum physical and thermal performance criteria, a suggested sizing guide, and suggested purchasing information for rain gear for use by workers who are potentially exposed to industrial hydrocarbon fires or other petrochemical fire hazards.

ASTM F2302 Flame and heat resistant clothing

ASTM F2302 is designed to set minimum performance criteria for protective clothing where other specialized standards do not apply. The specification requires minimum flame resistance using the ASTM D6413 test method (described below) and heat resistance, as based on an International test method, ISO 17493. The specification requires that clothing materials show no more than a 2-second after flame and 6-inch char length when tested to ASTM D6413. For heat resistance, materials can not ignite, melt, drip, or separate, or shrink more than 10% when placed in an oven for 5 minutes at 500°F. Reusable

garment materials are tested new and after 10 cycles of laundering. Helly Hansen product meeting this standard are identified with the icon shown above. WARNING: Products that show acceptable afterflame and/or heat resistance per ASTM F2302 are not intended for direct flame contact or for prolonged high heat exposure. These products will not protect against all flame and heat exposures. Conduct a hazard and risk assessment to determine the suitability of this product for your application.

ASTM F1930 Standard test method for evaluation of flame resistant clothing for protection against flash fire simulations using an instrumented manikin This test method covers quantitative measurements and subjective observations that characterize the performance of single layer garments or protective clothing ensembles in a simulated flash fire environment having controlled heat flux, flame distribution, and duration. This test method is used to provide predicted human skin burn

A separate table specifies different types of PPE for each hazard/risk category. For example, FR clothing consisting of a long-sleeved shirt pants, coverall, jacket, parka, or rainwear is required for hazard/risk categories 1 through 4. Arc flash suits are required for hazard/ risk categories 3 and 4 in addition to arc-rated shirts and pants. NFPA 70E is primarily an end user standard, which does not specifically address clothing certification or labeling. Nevertheless, manufacturers can claim compliance with the standard according to one of the referenced hazard/risk categories by meeting the respective referenced clothing standard and then indicating the hazard/risk category consistent with the product’s performance.

CSA Z462 Workplace electrical safety This standard is the Canadian equivalent of the NFPA® 70-E. The development of this standard was based on the NFPA® 70-E with changes being made of Parts I, II and III to harmonize requirements with the Canadian Electrical Code.

Standard specification for arc and flame resistant rain gear

This European Standard specifies performance requirements for limited flame spread materials and material assemblies used in protective clothing. Protective clothing constructed from materials and material assemblies complying with this European Standard is suitable for protection against accidental contact with small igniting flames, in circumstances where there is no significant heat hazard. Three

injury for single layer garments or protective clothing ensembles mounted on a stationary instrumented manikin which are then exposed in a laboratory to a simulated fire environment having controlled heat flux, flame distribution, and duration. This test method is required as part of ASTM F2733 and NFPA2112.

NFPA 70E is related to the National Electrical Code and addresses electrical safety requirements for employee workplaces that encompass electrical conductors and equipment installed within or on buildings and adjacent areas and for the supply of electricity. Chapter 1 of the standard addresses safety-related work practices including gloves, sleeves footwear, head protection, face and eye protection, and protective apparel. Specific requirements are provided for wearing of clothing resistant to flash flame where possible exposure to electrical arc occurs. Clothing for body protection must meet ASTM F1506 (textile clothing) or ASTM F1891 (rainwear). Selection criteria are based on a hazard/risk category by task with ratings ranging from 1 to 4.

ASTM F1506 Standard performance specification for flame resistant textile materials for wearing apparel for use by electrical workers exposed to momentary electric arc and related thermal hazards This performance specification covers the flame resistance of textile materials to be used for wearing apparel for use by electrical workers exposed to

momentary electric arc and related thermal hazards. This performance specification does not cover coated fabrics commonly used in rain gear.

ASTM F 1959 Standard test method for determining the arc rating of materials for clothing This test method is used to measure the arc rating of materials intended for use as flame resistant clothing for workers

exposed to electric arcs that would generate heat flux rates from 84 to 25 120 kW/m2 [2 to 600 cal/cm2s].

Standards & Electrical Terminology Arc Rating - is a value that describes a materials performance when exposed to an electrical arc discharge. It is expressed in cal/cm² and can be derived from either the ATPV (Arc Thermal Performance Value) or the Ebt (Breakopen Threshold Energy) whichever is lower. ATPV – Arc Thermal Performance Value is defined as the incident energy that results in a 50% probability of the onset of a second degree burn.

Ebt - Breakopen Threshold Energy is defined as the incident energy on a material or material system that results in a 50% probability of breakopen. Breakopen – in arc testing, the formation of one or more holes in a material that may allow thermal energy to pass through.

HAF – Heat Attenuation Factor is the percentage of total energy that the fabric has prevented from reaching the panel sensors.

ASTM F1671 Blood-Borne Pathogen Test Method ASTM F1671 is a test method that measures the passage of blood-borne pathogens through clothing material and seams. In this testing, specimens of workwear materials are individually placed in a test cell and exposed to liquid containing a non-harmful surrogate microorganism. This microorganism simulates Hepatitis B and C Viruses and the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (that causes AIDS). A sophisticated assay procedure is used that is able to detect a single penetrating virus, thus establishing the basis for clothing material viral penetration resistance. Test results are reported as “pass” if no virus is detected. Helly Hansen products that provide passing results for clothing material and seams are identified with the above icon.

EN 342:2004 Ensembles and garments for protection against cold The standard specifies requirements and test methods for performance of clothing ensembles intended to protect against cold (-5C). Helly Hansen has tested its products according to method B, which means that the insulation (X) has been measured for a garment combination jacket/pant or coverall with a base layer underneath. In addition air permeability (Y) is measured and reported as Class 1-3 where 1 is lowest Class.
