SURVIVAL WORK SPORT
FLOTATION 2009
Since 1877, when sea captain Helly Juell Hansen made his first “Oilskin” waterproof jackets, the company has pushed the boundaries of fabric technology. Trust, protection and quality were the watch words... The rest, as they say, is history.
Helly Hansen has been at the forefront of Safety-at-Sea since it launched “Kapok” life belts in 1932. They were revolutionary in a time when few fishermen were able to swim. In 1972 Helly Hansen launched PVC foam with closed cells. Closed cell foam is inherently buoyant, and thus not as susceptible to damage -and loss of buoyancy- from puncturing. Production of survival suits began in 1974 in response to demand from the fledgling oil industry. Today the Safety-at-Sea collection continues the company’s tradition, offering innovative products

Helly Hansen Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) and Lifejackets are designed and tested to meet the Department of Transport (Canada) requirements for materials, workmanship and in-water performance. OUTER SHELL Outer shells are made from either 210 or 420 Denier nylon with superior weather resistance. MIDDLE LAYER (FOAM) The middle layer provides both the flotation and thermal insulation of each product. It is made from either PE or PVC foam. LINING MATERIAL The lining material is a durable 210 Denier nylon fabric.
MINIMUM BUOYANCIES FOR PFDs and LIFEJACKETS Inherently Buoyant PFDs: 15.5 lb (7 kg) Inflatable PFDs (when inflated): 33.7 lb (15.3 kg) Lifejackets: Child: 7 lb (3.2 kg) Youth: 13 lb (6 kg) Adult: 21 lb (9.6 kg) As the average adult weighs only 8 lbs (4kg) in the water, these buoyancy numbers are more than adequate to keep a person afloat.
2
Federal Regulations state that every boat must carry at least one correctly fitted Transport Canada approved PFD (Personal Flotation Device) for each person on board. Choosing the correct PFD or lifejacket is as important as wearing one. You should always try on your PFD before you buy it, and make sure that it is comfortable as well as fitted properly. When you put on your PFD it should fit snugly, and all buckles and straps should be able to be done up. With the buckles and straps all connected, have someone pull up on the shoulders of the device. If it slips up to your mouth, or over your head, it is too big. Try tightening the straps, or choose a smaller size. Try sitting down, and moving around. Does the PFD ride up, or pinch? Remember, a PFD will only help you if you wear it, and an uncomfortable PFD is more likely to end up in storage, instead of in use.

Helly Hansen inflatables are the most compact, comfortable and safe alternative for Department of Transport (Canada) approved PFDs (personal flotation devices). Using the latest in inflation technology, Helly Hansen inflatable PFDs are easy to service and maintain. Great for all seasons, the slim compact design can be worn over any clothing and when inflated has the ability to turn a person face up in the water. Helly Hansen has designed this new generation of inflatable PFDs to meet the needs of the most demanding users.

Helly Hansen inflatable PFDs use the most advanced technology available. The inflating mechanisms used on each of these models are more resistant to accidental inflations, require less servicing, and are easier to use and understand than any other inflating mechanisms available today. The CO2 cylinder simply snaps into place and the service indicator (visible from the front window of the device) appears either red or green confirming if the device has been properly armed or not.
Re-Arming Kits:
HRK100: Rearm kit for HI100
All Helly Hansen inflatable PFDs inflate to a bright yellow chamber. This inflated chamber offers 35lbs of buoyancy, a bright yellow colour for excellent visibility and is capable of self-righting most people from a face-down position.

Lifejackets were developed for professional mariners in the event of emergencies at sea. They were designed to account for more extreme wave conditions, and greater risk of injury to the wearer during abandonment situations. A lifejacket is required to turn an unconscious person to a face-up position, and hold their mouth above the water. These performance requirements cause lifejackets to be very bulky in front, and thus not as comfortable.
M101 - All-Purpose Vest • Lightweight PE foam • Easy to use side release buckles • Elasticized sides for better fit • Chest pocket • Split back foam panel for added comfort and easy storage • Approved to Standard: CAN/CGSB 65.11-M88

...OR PFD? The majority of flotation devices on the market today are not lifejackets, but in fact PFDs (personal flotation device). PFDs evolved from the need to make a device that would be sufficiently comfortable for users to wear all the time. For PFDs to be more comfortable the buoyant material had to be redistributed. This reduces the performance of the device as compared to lifejackets. Evidence shows that most small craft operators who drown, do so within sight of a potential rescuer, and likely would have been saved if they remained afloat a few moments longer. Since most small craft users operate close to potential rescuers, it is more important to give them devices that will keep them afloat, and be worn, than high performance devices that are bulky and uncomfortable to wear.
