ARCHITECT’S RESIDENCE

AN ARCHITECT’S RESEDENCE IN SHIMLA (HIMACHAL PRDESH). IN THE SERENE VALLIES OF HIMALIYAS. THE ARCHITECT HAPPENS TO HAVE A PASSION FOR DANCE AND THE SITE IS CONTOURS DOWN TO A LAKE . THE ARCHTECT LIVES WITH HIS FAMILY OF BOTH PARENTS, KIDS, AND WIFE.

A STO

ORY OF THE SEASONS

ARCHITECT’S RESIDENCE SHIMLA PROJECT BRIEF: THE DESIGN BRIEF ASKED US TO DESIGN AN ARCHITECT’S RESIDENCE, WHO LIVES WITH HIS FOR (8 EMPLOYEES) PLACED ON THE SAME SITE..

FURTHERMORE, THE ARCHITECTT HAPPENS TO HAVE A PASSION FOR DNCE AS WELL, HENCE A DANCE STUDIO IS TO BE ENCORPORATED INTO THE DESIGN .

THE EXCERCISE INTENDED TO MAKE US WORK IN AN UNFAMILIAR CONTEXTAND TO SPECIFICALLY FOCUSED ON THE WAY WE STUDIED AND UTILISED THE SITE.

INFORMATON

FAMILY AND PARENTS AND ALSO RUNS AN OFFICE

GEOGRAPHY THE SITE: THE SITE IS ALLOCATED IN THE VALLIES OF SHIMLA BESIDE A LAKE WITH AN AREA OF 5000 SQ.FT.THE SITE AS SURVEYED HAS 4 BASIC LEVELS, COUNTING THE LEVEL OF WATER/ LAKE AS 0.0METRE AND THE SITE GOES TO

SITE ANALYSIS THE GIVEN SITE LIES IN AN RELATIVELY ISOLATED AREA, THIS SECLUSION FROM THE URBAN FABRIC PROVIDES A SEREN VALLEY ENVIRONMENT OF SHIMLA THAT IS LEVERAGED IN THE DESIGN.

IMPORTANT FACT:

THE LAKE TO WHICH THE SITE CONTOURS DOWN , IS CONNECTED TO A LARGER LAKE WHICH IS ON A LOWER LEVEL. HENCE, THE WATER IN THE LAKE NEVER RISES ABOVE ONE METRE , THUS, THE DESIGN USES THIS GEOGRAPHICAL FACT TO PLACE THE LOWER FLOORS CLOSE TO THE WATER AND HAVE PIERS THAT

THE GIVEN SITE HAD FOUR MAJOR “VISTAS” THAT WERE

THE

CONCEPTION F THE PLAN FORM INVOLVES PLANNING ALONG AXES THAT FRAMED THESE

FOUR VISTAS.

INSPIRATION FROM PAINTINGS : SUPREMATISM IS AN ART FORMTHAT IS NOT HUMAN CENTRIC. IT INVOLES MAKING ART WITH ONLY GOMETRICAL ENTITIES AND GIVING ARTISTIC MEANING TO THEM. THE PLANFORM OF

2

1

THEDESIGN IS AN ABSTRACTION OF THESE FAMOUSE SUPREMATIST PAINTINGS. 9 HEMANT JOSHI : hemantjoshi2394@gmail.com

THE PLAN FORM AND IT’S JUSTIFICATION: THE GIVEN SITE IS EXTENSIVELY USED TO LEVERAGE THE DESIGN CONCEPT. THE PLAN FOR IS SPREAD OUTTO CREATE SP PRIVATE SPACES AS WELL AS FAMILY SPACES AND ALSO AN OFFICE WITH 6-8 EMPLOYEES. THE GEOMANCY OF THE DESIGN CONSISTES OF PRIMARY SHAPES BUT ARRANGED IN SUPREMTIST WAYS TO PROVIDE MEANING.

THE DESIGN CONSISTS OF SPACES THAT ARE USED IN DIFFERENT SEASONS, LIKE THE PIER AREA, THE FAMILY LOUNGE, THE OPEN DECK AND THE POOL WOULD BE MOSTLY USED IN THE SPRING OR THE PLESANT SUMMERS WHILE DURING WINTERS THE FAMILY MEMBERS WOULD COZE UP IN THE LIVING ROOM NEXT TO THE FIREPLACE OR

THE

INDOOR

POOL

OR

THE

HOMETHEATRE..

PERSONAL INTENT WITH THE DESIGN : INITIALLY THE PLAN FORM OF TH RESIDENCE WAS AN CONCEPTIONAL ABSTRACTION OF SUPREMATIST PAINTINGS, AND THEN IT LATER MORPHED INTO VOLUMS PLANNED ON LEVELS CONTOURIG DOWN ONTO THE LAKE.

THE MAIN AIM OF THE DESIGN WAS TO FRAME THE

4-5

PTOMINENT

VISTAS

AND

STIMULATING

MAKETHE AND

TO

LEVERAGE THE SERENITY OF LIVING IN THE HILLS.

THE

DESIGN

SUITS

THE

LIFESTYLE

OF

THE

ARCHITECT. THE OFFICE AND THE RESIDENCE ARE INTERCONNECTED WITH THE DANCE STUDIO O UPPER LEVE; AND BEDROOM OF THE ARCHITECT ON THE LOWER LEVEL. ALONG WITH A PRIVATE DECK. LIVING LIFE ON MULTIPLE LEVELS INA METAPHORICAL SENSE.

IT INVOLVS THE USE OF SANDSTONE RUBBLE OR ASHLARS

PERSONAL INTENT WITH THE DESIGN :

ASSIGNMENT

WAS

TO

A

TYPICAL

RURAL TRAINING CENTER AND INTERRELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VARIOUS FUNCTIONS OF THE UNIT. BUT THE MAIN CHALLENGE WAS TO MAKE IT A COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMRNT FOR THE RURAL PUPILS,. IT IS OBSERVED THAT THE RURAL PEOPLE BESIDES

LACKING BASIC

EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS TEND TO HAVE MORE AXIETY AND MOST LACK SELF CONFIDENCE. HENCE, THE MAJOR FOCUS OF THE DESIGN WAS TO MAKE THE STUDENTS

FEEL COMFORTABLE-AT HOME-AT EASE.

THIS WAS ACHIEVED BY THE SHAPE AND THE STYLE OF THE BUILDING, IT SHOULD BE SUCH THAT IT DEVELOPS AN INTERACTIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR THE RURAL YOUTH. 16 HEMANT JOSHI : hemantjoshi2394@gmail.com

I

INTERPRETATION OF THE PROMANADE IN

THE SECTION BELOWSHOWS THE SPLIT OF THE ACADEMIC BLOCK FROM THE PLINTH LEVEL, BOTH FLOORS ARE REACHED WITHIN THE HEIGHTS OF 1.8 METRES RATHER THAN HAVING A 3 METRE FLIGHT FROM THE GROUND FLOOR.THIS SPLIT IN LEVELS REDUCED CIRCULATION AREA.
