European capital of culture

Feature

Finland :

Turku has the neighbour Tallinn, another European Capital of Culture 2011, and is a very old coastal city on the Baltic sea. A big cultural activity is going on in the doyenne cities of Finland, around the theme ÂŤ Turku in fire Âť, with reference to the large number of fires that have devasted the city during its history but also, and mainly, because of its intense creative and artistic activity. The city of Turku was founded on the banks of the Aurajoki river and, still today, inhabitants define the places depending on which bank they are situated. Having a walk along these banks means discovering the cathedral, the Sibelius museum, the house museum Ett Hem, the Aboa Vetus museum, the handicraft Luostarinmaki museum, the art museum Waino Aaltonen. Crossing the bridge or taking the free ferry Fori to join the castle of Turku, the Fleet museum (with the Suomen Joutsen three masts), as well as the Pharmacy museum and the Qwensel house. A few steps away in the Market square is the Art Musem of Turku, the Market Halles and the beautiful central library. If one is tempted by lakes or forests, one may also enjoy the Aland Islands which are an autonomous region and culturally apart from Finland, where one speak Swedish.
