Galileo Galilei, "And yet it moves"... Š Stefano TORRIONE / hemis.fr
Stéfano TORRIONE offers you a journey in the footsteps of Galileo Galilei who for the first time in 1609 directed his telescope towards the star lit sky. This reportage takes you to the various places where the father of modern science left the marks of his genius. Firstly in Pisa his native town where Galileo studied physics and discovered the isochronous motions of the pendulum while observing the movement of a lamp in the cathedral, the first sign of the invention of the pendulum clock. Then In Padua, where he lived and taught at university between 1592 and 1610 (the best years of his life as he once said). Followed his most impressive discoveries which would for ever change the way we look at the cosmos. It is there also that he set up his first telescope with about 3x magnification, discovered the satellites of Jupiter, confirming as previously stated by Copernicus that the earth was going around the sun. Next stop would take him to Florence where he was nominated great mathematician of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. It was for him a triumphant return which was also marked by the publication of « Sidereus Nuncius », the starry messenger, a best selling book of the times, which notably contains his observations of the phases of the moon. Florence is riddled with memories of Galileo Galilei. It is in the museum of science history that is kept his telescope. The observatory of the city is also at a throw’s stone from the home where the scientist spent his last year. And finally Rome where his genius was first discovered but where many turned their back on him. To fully grasp the way the trial of Galileo went, one only needs to enter the inquisition room to imagine the horrid interrogations which he faced, those which would later force him to forswear the Copernician heliocentric model and to renounce his beliefs in front of the judges of the Holly Office. It is at this very moment that he would murmur the famous sentence « And yet it moves ». Galileo Galilei would not have been rehabilitated by the church before 1992.
