The Caribbean : the land of pirates
Piracy became common in the Caribbean islands in the 16th century because pirates and corsairs alike were attracted by the huge amounts of silver and gold that crossed the turquoise waters in the holds of ships. They took refuge on these heavenly islands that were also strategic for them. Here we sail in the wake of Jack Sparrow and his famous elders, from Turtle Island, to the north of the Dominican Republic which was a crucial passage for attacking Spanish vessels at Port Royal in Jamaica, Basse-Terre, Saint Christopher and Saint Pierre in Martinique as well as the Cayman Islands where the greatest pirates took refuge.
