2011 Chamber banquet shines an encouraging light on local community
Chamber President Bill Edwards holds the microphone steady as Dorothy Hunt accepts the 2010 Henderson-Vance County Citizen of the Year Award at the annual Memberhsip Meeting and Banquet on Feb. 8 at the VanceGranville Community College Civic Center.
The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce celebrated 73 years at its annual Membership Meeting and Banquet on Feb. 8. The event was held at the VanceGranville Community College Civic Center. Honored guests at the banquet were the Vance County 16 and under girls’ fast pitch softball team, which won the Babe Ruth World Series championship in 2010. “Many of you remember that last summer our under 16 girl’s fast pitch softball team won the 2010 World Series in their age division,” Chamber President Bill Edwards said. “They earned this title by defeating teams throughout the U.S. and bringing the trophy home to us. In my opinion, they are some of our community’s greatest ambassadors,” Edwards added. Walmart Distribution Center #6091 honored each girl, coach and manager
of the team with a personalized plaque and also supplied banquet tickets for each of them and a guest. The 2009 Citizen of the Year, James Edwards, presented the 2010 Citizen of the Year Award to Lifeline Outreach Ministries founder, Dorothy Hunt. “Twentyseven years ago, in 1984, she founded a program called Lifeline Outreach,” Edwards said. “She had just $300, a handful of people who wanted to help her, a vision, a dream, and faith in a God who she knew would answer her prayers if she remained faithful. Dottie Wunker once wrote of Hunt in a letter to the editor of The Daily Dispatch: “An amazing woman whose loving heart far outweighs her tiny frame, she is Henderson’s Mother Teresa of homeless women. She gathers them to her like a mother hen,

While accepting the award, Hunt said of her shelter: “It started as one woman’s dream and became a community project. The plan is just to start where you are and make a difference.” Hunt expressed thankfulness to the Lord for everything that she has received and said: “I am accountable to the Lord Jesus Christ, who has enabled me to do everything that I do.” Keynote speaker for the evening was David Cutcliffe, Duke University head football coach. A graduate of the University of Alabama, Cutcliffe became Duke’s 21st head coach.

Cutcliffe was named SEC Coach of the Year in 2003, has participated in 22 bowl games, and has coached the likes of Andy Kelly, Heath Shuler, Tee Martin, Eli Manning and Peyton Manning. In his comments, Cutcliffe said: “I am truly impressed with what the Chamber has done here tonight.” He addressed the emphasis that was placed on education and commended the educators who were present on their work and the impact they have on individual lives and thus the community at large. He also praised the softball team on their accomplishments and encouraged them to continue to be champions both on the field and off. “As I tell my guys, these four F’s will help keep your priorities in line. They are faith, family,
future and then football,” Cutcliffe said. In offering advice taken from his coaching philosophy, Cutcliffe said: “Think of all the people who have helped you along the way and be grateful for what you have received. Your community is the product of the priorities, principals and values you embrace. As my dad told all six of the Cutcliffe kids, always leave a place better than you find it.” Vance County Schools presented the ninth annual Shining Moment in Education Award to the Townsville Lions Club as the top business partner for Vance County Schools for the 20102011 school year. The club is a valuable partner with New Hope Elementary School and has donated approximately $13,000 to the school’s media center over the last several years. Maria Parham Medical Center sponsors Medical Oncology Center/MRI open house On Dec. 7, Maria Parham Medical Center hosted an open house to unveil its newly renovated Medical Oncology Center. Maria Parham has been providing treatment to cancer patients for over 20 years, but the size of the facility could not accommodate the number of patients requiring treatment. The new center better meets local needs at four times the size of the old facility, consisting of about 6,000 square feet. It features a 14-patient treatment area, five examination rooms and a large triage room. Leslie Carswell, director of the oncology unit, said: “In recent years, we have experienced a greater patient load, and now feel like we can better accommodate our patients and their families in this much bigger facility.” The new center includes a 67-foot glass wall that provides patients with a view of an outdoor garden that is accessible from the treatment area and is filled with flowers and shrubbery. The treatment area also has two large screen televisions for the patients.
EZ CAR CARE
“The new unit offers patients more privacy and it also offers the staff more space to function,” said Bob Singletary, president and CEO of the hospital. “It will allow us to expand the staff in the oncology unit.” The facility also includes a Cancer Resource Center, a joint effort of The American Cancer Society and Maria Parham, which will house information to educate patients and families on different illnesses. A conference room and a library are also included in the unit. This will provide a suitable meeting place for the local Tumor Board and the staff of the unit. The new unit also includes a large waiting room for patients and their families. The art of local artists decorates the walls. Live music welcomed the large crowd of guests and continued as they were toured around the center. The tours were followed by a ceremony in which Bob Singletary, president and CEO of Maria Parham Medical Center, and Dr. Bev Tucker, chairperson of the medical center’s

Also unveiled at the open house was Maria Parham Medical Center’s new wide-bore MRI machine, the only one of its kind in the region. An MRI uses strong magnets and radio waves to produce high quality images of a patient’s organs and tissue. The wide-bore MRI has an opening for the patient that is 15 percent larger than a traditional MRI machine, giving it the capability of obtaining MRIs on larger patients. “It is a big improvement,” said Melamed. “It will allow us to do all new types of imaging including breast imaging,” he added.
