Quick Print honored as 2014 small business of the year The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce, along with the Franklin, Granville and Warren County chambers and the Vance-Granville Community College Small Business Center, hosted the 2015 Small Business Luncheon in a collaborative effort again this year. The event was held at Henderson Country Club on Wednesday, May 6. CenturyLink was once again the presenting sponsor for the event. Ever y year since 1963, the president of the United States has issued a proclamation announcing National Small Business Week, which recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) website states, “We recognize that more than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year.” As part of National Small Business Week, the SBA takes the opportunity to highlight the impact of outstanding entrepreneurs, small business owners, and others from all 50 states and U.S. territories. Of those small businesses and their owners the organization says, “Every day, they’re working to grow small businesses, create 21st centur y jobs, drive innovation, and increase America’s global competitiveness.” This local annual spring luncheon is a part of the national effort to recognize the merits of small businesses within every community. After lunch and a keynote address, the event concluded with the presentation of the Vance County Small Business of the Year, a title awarded for the 14th consecutive year. This year’s recipient is Quick Print of Henderson. In business for more than 28 years, Quick Print continues to honor its mission “to provide the highest quality of fset and digital printing at an affordable price with exceptional turnaround times.” Quick Print was established in 1981 and since that time, technology in the printing industr y has dramatically changed. With the need for faster and faster turnaround

times, Quick Print became the area’s first instant printer. “We specialized in ‘while you wait’ printing and copying and today, after 28 years of service in the area, we still specialize in fast turnaround times and quality printing,” said owner Warren Nelms. “The company’s website promotes Quick Print as ‘Your Neighborhood Printer,’ and those who nominated the business for this award tout them as such. Warren and wife Jeannie have served the community well and they continue to give back,” said Chamber President John Barnes while presenting the award. Specializing in all types of printing including offset, digital color copies and wide-format, Quick Print can reproduce your camera-ready artwork or design the artwork for you. They of fer free quotes on your printing needs and are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To contact Quick Print, call 252492-8905 or go to www.quickprint.biz. Luncheon honors administrative professionals The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce hosted a luncheon honoring administrative assistants and other professional support staff on Wednesday, April 22. More than 100 people were in attendance. The event was held at Henderson Country Club. The luncheon is sponsored each year by the Chamber of Commerce of Warren County, the Granville County Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Franklin County Chamber and the Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce. The first National Secretaries Week was organized in 1952 in conjunction with the United States Department of Commerce and various office supply and equipment manufacturers. The Wednesday of that week became known as National Secretaries Day. As the organization gained international recognition, the events became known as Professional Secretaries Week and Professional Secretaries Day. In 2000, the names of the week and the day were changed to Administrative Professionals Week and Administrative Professionals Day to keep pace with changing job titles and expanding responsibilities of the modern administrative workforce. Many work environments across the world observe this recognition day. The luncheon featured keynote speaker Tisha Powell, co-anchor for ABC11 Eyewitness News. Powell gave an entertaining and motivational speech encouraging attendees to work hard and do their best. Before coming to ABC11 Eyewitness News in 2004, Powell was the midday anchor at News 9 San Antonio and a reporter and anchor for KABB, where she covered the escape of the Texas Seven and the Spurs’ NBA Championship. The Louisiana native graduated from Loyola University New Orleans, where she majored in broadcast news and minored in political science. After college, she worked as a reporter, producer and anchor for WCBI in Mississippi. She then went back home to WDSU in New Orleans. While here in the Triangle, Powell has followed the UNC Tar Heels to the Final Four and traveled back to New Orleans in 2005 to cover Hurricane Katrina for Eyewitness News. She has also interviewed First Lady Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey. She is an Army wife of 16 years and enjoys traveling the country to watch her 12-year-old daughter compete in gymnastics and track and field. She also enjoys spending time with her youngest daughter, Evangeline. She is a parent volunteer with the Girl Scouts of America and Duke School for Children, and an avid supporter of the American Heart Association and Meals on Wheels. Attendees enjoyed a lunch of house salad, chicken crepes, vegetable medley, rice pilaf and dessert with beverage.

Stickers to promote community pride The marketing committee of the Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce has kicked of f a campaign to promote community pride and combat negative perceptions about the community in which we all live, work and play. This first simple effort that can have a positive impact on our own local perceptions as well as perceptions in surrounding areas involves a sticker slating “Henderson My Hometown” and displays an image of the Henderson clock tower. The idea is that for others to see our community in a positive light, we ourselves must first see our com-

munity positively and display a sense of pride in it as “our town.” Ex-of ficio Chamber Board Member and Henderson Police Chief Marcus Barrow was the first to offer to place a sticker on each of the Henderson Police Depar tment vehicles. “I think it’s a great idea and want to suppor t it”, said Barrow. Marketing committee chairperson Susan Rogers came up with the idea and said, “I grew up in Henderson and believe it’s a great place. If we want others to believe in this community, whether individuals or businesses, we

have to begin with ourselves. A positive outlook and community perception is contagious.” The stickers wer e first made available to all attendees of the chamber’s annual banquet and can now be picked up free of charge at the chamber of fice at 414 S. Garnett St. The production of the stickers was made possible by a number of sponsors, including Kilian Engineering, Inc.; Prim Development & Rentals; Toyota/Scion of Henderson; Henderson Police Depar tment; The Downtown Development Commission; Quality Investments; Chickfil-A; and The Daily Dispatch.

The Peanut Roaster A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at 10 a.m. March 12 for The Peanut Roaster to celebrate the opening of the newly remodeled retail store in Henderson. In 1949, Larry Monahan Sr. began to sell roasted nuts from his family-owned restaurant in Virginia to passing tourists. It was then that the beloved Peanut Roaster brand was born. The peanut business quickly outgrew the restaurant and in 1985, Larry’s son John decided to take over the roasted nut business. In 1985, a peanut processing facility was opened in Cary. A little more than 10 years later, in 1997, a new production and distribution facility was opened in Henderson. The rest is history! The Peanut Roaster currently offers mixed nuts, gift baskets, confections, candied nuts, flavored peanuts, food gifts, gift towers, gift tins, fundraising, business gifts and more. The Peanut Roaster is located at 394 Zeb Robinson Road in Henderson and can be reached at 252-4310100. The website is www.peanut.com.

The house, which was gifted to them by Mrs. Nell Wiggins, will be known as Hope House. This residence will offer the next level of assistance to men who show promise of becoming selfsufficient contributors to the community. Many opportunities will be available for individuals, church groups, civic clubs, businesses, etc. to volunteer and provide helpful services to these men. Community Partners of Hope is committed to transforming the lives of homeless men by uniting community partners to offer these men hope, help and resources that enable growth into physically, emotionally, financially and spiritually healthy contributors to their families and the community.
