Dataforge named Small Business of the Year he Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce along with the Franklin, Granville and Warren County chambers and the Vance-Granville Community College Small Business Center sponsored the 2013 Small Business Luncheon in a collaborative effort again this year. The event was hosted by the Henderson-Vance chamber and took place at Henderson Country Club on Wednesday, May 29. CenturyLink was the presenting sponsor for this year’s event. The highlight of the event was awarding the 2012 Small Business of the Year. This year’s winner was Dataforge. Opening in 2005, Dataforge is a thriving local small business offering services to companies for anything related to computers, such as sales, service, network setup, network and computer maintenance, web design and web hosting. Owner Phil Hart has worked in the information technology field for more than 15 years. Hart also generously “gives back” to the community in various ways, such as providing in-kind donations of webspace advertising to non-profit organizations and by being active in the community by serving on numerous boards of directors.

Phil Hart of Dataforge receives the award from chamber board chairman Hal Muetzel. The company also provides notices of community events hosted by the Chamber of Commerce, the City of Henderson and other organizations. Also owner of Home in Henderson, both of Hart’s businesses are active, dues-paying members of the Chamber. “Hart is an extraordinary example of a an individual with a dream, the courage to pursue it, and the smart business sense to succeed by providing excellent products

coupled with outstanding customer service” said Chamber President John Barnes. This annual spring luncheon is part of a national effort to educate communities on the importance of small businesses to the local economy. Local statistics show that small businesses employ about 48 percent of local employees. The luncheon’s keynote speaker was Dr. Stelfanie Williams, president of

Vance-Granville Community College. In her address, Dr. Williams spoke of her experiences not only as an educator but as the daughter of a small business owner and a partner along with her husband in several entrepreneurial endeavors. From those experiences, Dr. Williams says, “I have a familiarity and deep appreciation for small business.” Noting how the face of business has changed through the years, Dr. Williams noted that three things key to not only surviving but thriving as a small business are proprietorship, lifelong learning and technology. Small Business of the Year award winners for the other three partnering counties were Creedmoor Drug Company for Granville County, Oakley Hall Antiques and Art, Inc. for Warren County and First Citizen’s Bank for Franklin County. Former recipients of the Vance County award include Johnson’s Block and Concrete Company, Inc.; City Tire, Inc.; Henderson Wellness Center; Franklin Brothers Nursery & Greenhouses, Inc.; Ballet Arts; Interiors Downtown; Fogg’s Exxon; Vance Furniture; The Peanut Roaster; and Raemac Transportation.

School of Excellence includes 26 in 26th class The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce, Vance County Schools and Vance-Granville Community College recently co-sponsored the 26th annual Vance County School of Excellence program. The event was held June 10-14 with 26 rising high school sophomores completing the program sponsored once again by Walmart Distribution Center No. 6091. SOE is a leadership development program for rising 10th graders from area high schools. Students are selected by the administration of each school based on academic ranking and proven leadership ability. The program utilizes team-building and leadership building activities, job shadowing opportunities and various speakers from the community. This year’s group participated in four all-day leadership skills activities and also took part in a community service day. The first day of activities involved team-building challenges, along with rock wall climbing and a high ropes course in the gymnasium of Western Vance High School. James Realon, physical education instructor at Western Vance, was the lead facilita-

The students’ fourth day involved information sessions and a tour of Vance-Granville Community College, with special emphasis placed on the college transfer program and the Career and College Promise opportunity, which

allows students while they are in high school to take college level courses free of charge. On their final day, the students heard powerful pre-

sentations focusing on “Overcoming Personal Obstacles” from Whitney Johnson, a rising senior at Northern Vance High School who has battled cancer over the last two years, and Joy Suther, a teacher at Zeb Vance Elementary School who has had to deal with the effects of diabetes since she was 9 years old. The last day ended with a luncheon and closing ceremony attended by the students, their family members and organizers of the School of Excellence program. Leadership Vance 2013 celebrates graduation of 20 The Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce announced 20 graduates from its annual Leadership Vance program. Leadership Vance is designed to create a group of informed and dedicated leaders who will contribute to the community. The program is organized into 12 sessions which began on Feb. 7 with an orientation breakfast at Vance-Granville Community College and concluded on July 8 with a graduation ceremony and dinner at Greenway’s Authentic Charcoal Grill. Participants are exposed to various aspects of Henderson and Vance County, specifically in regard to city and county government, health and community resources, economic development, agriculture and natural resources, history, media, criminal justice and law. The 2013 Leadership Vance Class completed its sessions on Tuesday, June 18, with the group’s required community service project which is selected, organized and completed by class participants. This year’s class spent the day at Area Christians Together in Service (ACTS) working in their pantry and food service area to perform deep cleaning, purging of foods and organizing the pantry for more efficient food distribution. The mission of ACTS as seen on their website at ncssm.edu/service/ area-christians-togetherin-service is “to help those who are without food by

providing food and moral support for those who have been abused.” The goal of ACTS is to provide shelter for those who have suffered from domestic violence and to offer a food donation program to help with a personal soup kitchen warehouse and to help with other community food supplies. The agency can be reached at (252) 492-8231 and is located at 305 S. Chestnut St. in Henderson. The class celebrated with a graduation dinner at Greenway’s Authentic Charcoal Grill on Monday, July 8. Each participant received a diploma for completing the five-month course and enjoyed a pictorial powerpoint presentation of the highlights and memories made together. Tots-N-More gives Employers, students honored at luncheon back to community Tots-N-More Consignment Boutique is a local small business that has a community mission as a part of its business plan. “One of your main focuses is to give back to the community as best we can and to encourage others to do the same”, says Joyce Doughty, co-owner of the business. From the beginning of the store’s operation, Tots-NMore committed to give 10 percent of their gross sales each quarter to non-profit groups that they identified. Five non-profits are benefactors of this program currently and they receive 5 percent of the 10 percent total. The other 5 percent goes all year long to Alex & Jenny Stewart through “European Christian Mission.” The couple has to raise their salary while Alex is teaching at the Tyndale Theological Seminary in the Netherlands. Alex was the youth leader at Carey Baptist Church where the Doughty’s attend while he was enrolled at South Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest earning his doctorate degree. They have received over $550 from the program so far. The first quarter 5 percent (December, January, February) went to the Vance County Animal Shelter and was over $250; second quarter (March, April, May) went to Vance County United Way and was over $300; third quarter (June, July, August) will be going to Rebuilding Hope; and the last quarter (September, October, November) is going to Henderson-Vance SafeKids.

Doughty added, “We are also helping Relay for Life Vance County and Optimum Luminaries. The clothing and items that they had left over from their yard sale was brought to us to sell throughout the year. They will be making 45 percent of the gross sales of those items. If anyone is wanting to add to that, or start an account for their group, they just need to contact the store.” Lastly, Tot-N-More will be partnering with Eckerd’s Adolescent Parenting Program here in Vance County. The girls in the program will be volunteering at the store from time to time doing stock and other clerical duties while earning credits for the program. There will be items in the store that have been donated to them and are being sold as other consignors, earning 45 percent into an account from which they will be able to purchase items. “We are very excited to work with these organizations and promote them here in Vance County. They all have an important role in the community and offer viable opportunities to each of us,” said Doughty. The store hopes to hold a “Fun Day” soon where the community can visit the store, have fun and meet the different people behind the various organizations that they help sponsor. “We want to raise awareness of the groups that we give to,” says Doughty. Tots-N-More can be reached by phone at (252) 430-8687 or on the web at tots-n-more.com. They are located at 216 Dabney Drive.

The STEPS to Self Sufficiency program is now entering into its seventh year being supported by federal and county dollars. It is currently the only program still being sustained in the state. There have been hundreds and hundreds of individuals who have benefited from this program.

“Vance County traditionally has one of the highest unemployment rates in the state and any additional training and resources that can be provided are welcomed,” says Ragland. “We’re hoping to erase the negative stigmas attached to recipients of Work First benefits and be mindful that we should always try to help others — we never know when we may need help ourselves.” For more information about the program, contact the Vance County Department of Social Services at 492-5001.
